This paper illustrates how numerical modelling has been utilised to predict water and gas pathways around active longwall panels using two case studies. This information has proved invaluable m the design of methane drainage schemes and for risk assessments undertaken at the mining planning stage. The modelling approach described has now been applied successfully to several situations in UK coalmines in order to optimise the position, length and orientation of methane drainage boreholes. The first case study describes the numerical modelling of the stress and shear plane development mund a longwall panel. The simulation was used to predict potential gas pathways through regions of low stress confinrment which are conducive to fluid flow. The conclusions from the modelling were utilised to allow an increase in the volumes of gas drainage and allow the efficient mining of the panel. A detailed discussion is provided on the model construction, determination of input paramters and optimisation of the borehole positions Details are provided on how the models allow a prediction of the fracture patterns, stress distributions and zones of reduced permeability around an active longwall panel. The second case study describes the numerical modelling of a fault adjacent to a face line drivage of a panel that had just started to be retreated. An inrush of water had occurred and a concern was whether further mining would lead to more extensive inrushes or whether the water inrush was associated with more local, limited capacity water bearing features. The role of a fault that was positioned close to the locality of the mine workings was examined. Fracture patterns stresses, strata permeability and water flows were predicted using mechanical and hydro-mechanical coupled models.

Island Creek Corporation is predominately an underground mine operator deploying room-and-pillar and retreat longwall mining methods for extracting coal. Wide variations are encountered in overburden depth, stratigraphy, and insitu stress fields. This requires major adjustments in mine design among mines and occasionally within a mine. Simple rock mechanics principles are utilized in mine design to optimize safety and productivity. Physical observations and micro deformation monitoring of roadways are the primary techniques employed. Pillars and artificial support systems are the primary design elements modified. The specific case histories reviewed in this paper include narrow panels with high extraction for conventionally mined rooms, pillar sizing for longwall gate entries at great depths, and bolt type selection for difficult ground conditions.

Coal refuse impoundments and underground mines are frequently sited in close vertical and horizontal proximity in the valleys of the Southern Appalachian coalfield. The steep V-shaped valleys provide the volume necessary for slurry storage against a coarse refuse embankment that is constructed across the valley mouth. The presence of coal outcrops on the valley walls provides economic access to mineable coal seams that may be located under several thousand feet of overburden beneath the adjacent ridges. In some instances where the underground mine precedes the slurry impoundment, the type of mining (partial or complete extraction) and pillar centers were selected without consideration for the potential future use of the valley as an impounding structure. The high standard established for the design and stability analysis of the coarse refuse embankments is clearly illustrated by the absence of an embankment failure in the thirty-one years since Buffalo Creek. However, the recent Martin County slurry spill focused attention on a thorough geotechnical analysis to prevent a connection between the flowable slurry and the mine void. The overburden, roof, pillar, floor, and outcrop barrier stability are examined to quantify the break through potential. The strength and physical properties of the consolidated fine refuse are also important since this material is often the most well-defined and quantifiable barrier separating the slurry and mine void. Because each site is unique, the appropriate analysis ranges from the calculation of roof, pillar, and floor safety factors to detailed numerical modeling of the mine workings and the determination of ground deformation and strains resulting from mine subsidence. The method of refuse disposal may be altered to slurry cells where the accuracy of the mine maps, extent of mining, type of mining (development or retreat) cannot be reliably verified or the break through analysis does not produce an acceptable level of risk. Case histories from the Southern Appalachian coalfield are used to illustrate the application of methodologies to quantify the break through potential of coal refuse impoundments.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is involved in research to improve geological sensing (or geo-sensing) techniques. This paper presents results from field trials of two research projects concerned with new technologies for geosensing. The goal of the first project was to develop a "smart" roof bolter drill so that it could probe into roof rock to evaluate rock conditions. The goal of the second project was to modify an existing mine-wide monitoring system in a continuous mining operation so that the system could interface with geotechnical instruments to provide near real-time geosensing. Integration of this mine-wide monitoring system with the smart roof drill to collect, reduce, and analyze geotechnical data and the potential applications of the resulting technology in mining, are described.

In 1998, the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) awarded funding to the School of Mining Engineering at the University of New South Wales to establish a rockbolt testing facility to research anchorage mechanisms associated with fully encapsulated rock bolts and to develop standardised testing procedures for rockbolts. This facility is still under development but has already been used to evaluate the effect of bolt profile and confinement on the load transfer characteristics of a resin encapsulated rock bolt. This paper describes the test facility and presents some of the results of development testing to date.

In general, the direction of the maximum horizontal stress in the eastern United States is fairly well defined. However, the variation of the magnitudes of the horizontal stresses is not very well understood. Because the horizontal stresses cause severe ground control problems in underground coal and limestone mines throughout the eastern United States a more complete understanding of how the magnitudes vary would be useful for developing mine design strategies to combat horizontal stress related ground control problems. Therefore, in this National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) study, the variation of the magnitude of the horizon stresses in sedimentary deposits in the eastern and Midwestern United States are examined with respect to two factors, the elastic modulus of the rock and the site depth. Stress measurements from thirty-seven sites are used in the evaluation. Examining the applied excess strains indicates that the eastern United States can be, separated into high and low strain zones. For most of the eastern United States the maximum applied excess or tectonic strain ranges from only 300 to 550 micro strains. However, there is one area, a portion of the Beckley seam in the central Appalachian region where the strains are significantly higher than the other regions. In this higher strain zone, the maximum applied tectonic strains range from 700 to 1,000 micro strains. Regression models for each zone based on the elastic modulus can explain between 83 to 85% of the variation of the maximum horizontal stress. Because one region, the northern Appalachian district, has strains that are about 20% higher than the other regions in the low strain zone, multiple strain models based on geographic regions were developed for the low strain zone that can explain 87 to 91% of the maximum horizontal stress variation with the elastic modulus. Depth was found not to be a significant causal factor in any increase in the horizontal stress even though the site depths ranged from 275 to 2,500 ft. Beyond a theoretical increase, based on Poisson's effect and gravity, no other increase in the horizontal stress with depth can be justified with this data. The most significant factor controlling the variation of the maximum horizontal stress is the elastic modulus of the rock, not the overburden depth.

This paper reviews the history of rock burst research in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho over the last 30 years. Rock bursting is a problem because of a combination of geological factors in the region--complex structure, high horizontal stresses, and strong, brittle rock that readily stores strain energy. The Bureau of Mines has cooperated with industry to study rock burst phenomenon for many years. Early work focused on methods to mitigate bursting problems within the context of existing mining methods. In the 1970's, researchers began investigating methods for altering or controlling conditions that lead to rock bursts. These control measures become part of the stope development that precedes mining or are changes in the mining process itself. Although, researchers continue to develop microseismic techniques, the major research effort focuses on developing a new mining method to reduce the number and severity of rock bursts in order to improve safety and increase productivity in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District.

Stowing or waste fill is common in the German mining industry since the beginning of mining activities, With increasing mechanization, flat and gently inclined seams (0 -- 18) were mined. These mines were located within the densely populated areas close to important infrastructures such as industrial complexes, roads, highways, railroads, rivers and canals. These buildings and infra¬structures were rarely protected against subsidence influences and other ground movements and dump capacities close to the mines were exhausted. For subsidence reasons and because of the low dump capacities pneumatic stowing methods were continuously developed and used in German longwalls until 1997. Due to techni¬cal standards and because of some restrictions pneumatic stowing in Germany is only used at a minimum seam thickness of 2.00 m and average costs of this method are $20 - 30 per ton. A significant reduction of the disturbance potential and by that a decrease in expenses for subsidence regulations due to reduced subsidence and ground movements could not be achieved. In this paper the experiences with pneumatic stowing in the Ger¬man mining industry are described. Possible subsidence reduction and economic aspects of pneumatic stowing are taken into account.

Estimation of the initial vertical stress carried in a coal seam is an important first step in virtually all methods of evaluating the required size of pillars in coal mines. Such estimates are a trivial exercise in coal fields overlain by gently undulating topography. The LaModel program is easily and routinely applied in such cases to efficiently estimate mining-induced stresses throughout the coal seam. However, application of LaModel to coal mines operating under rugged topography and/or in tectonically disturbed regions is more difficult. LaModel estimates stresses in a twostep process. Topographic and multi-seam mining effects on insitu stresses are estimated in an initial step, and then mininginduced stresses are estimated in an independent second step. A LaModel program function has recently been introduced that decouples these two steps, allowing in-situ stresses to be directly entered from a file rather than calculated. One application of this function is to streamline sensitivity studies by avoiding repeated recalculation of in-situ stress. The function also allows importation of in-situ stress estimates developed by other means. There are no constraints on the imported stress field, which may include significant stress perturbations due to topography, faults, etc. Hence, the range of geologic environments that can be examined by LaModel is significantly increased. This study uses the new decoupling function in an exploration of in-situ stress estimation in mountainous terrain. One option is to use the topographic stress estimation feature included within the LaModel program, and the influence of important parameters in this routine is explored. Another option explored is importation of results from a detailed volume element model. Results of this study suggest that the method used to estimate in-situ stress, and the details of its execution, can have a significant impact for mines in mountainous terrain with strong overburden. More generally, decoupling is an efficient and flexible function that should be considered for most design studies.

This paper presents results of the experiments carried out in Beth Energy No. 33 Mine for the purpose of alleviating problems associated with cutter roof. Cutter roof problems have delayed the advance of the entry development considerably and maintenance cost of these entries was very high due to the requirement of very extensive and heavy artificial supports. The study includes assessment of the problem, investigation of the geology and lithology of the mines, study of in-situ stresses and corrective measures to combat the problem. Two approaches were selected as the corrective measures: 1) implementing yield pillar concept in order to reduce the effects of in-situ horizontal stresses, 2) designing an effective roof reinforcement system and application procedure. Results of this study revealed that roof strata is weak and in-situ stresses are very high at the problem area which results in development of cutter roof. Implementation of yield pillar concept was found to be ineffective because cutter roof often developed at the entry face concurrent to the development. However, proper design and implementation of roof reinforcement system stabilized the roof and eliminated roof caving during both entry development and retreat of longwall face, despite existence of the cutter roof, at a much lower cost.

State of the Art Room and Pillar mining techniques have been employed at two coal mines in the UK in the last two years. This paper describes the design of pillars and rockbolted support systems for Room and Pillar mining operations in these collieres. Within the last year, rock mass classification systems have been used in the design process of a room and pillar mining layout at one of these collieries. In particular, the roofbolt support system was detailed using these techniques and the support system was linked with operational aspects such as depth of cut. The depth of cut was initially estimated using rock mass classification systems and then verified by a stand up trial which was monitored remotely. The stand up time has a direct influence on the operational aspects of the mine and this is described. The design was verified by performance monitoring and the results are discussed. The importance of understanding the role of rockbolting is emphasised along with some examples of accurately determining in-situ bolt performance. The paper also recommends some modifications to rock mass classification systems when applied to underground coal mining operations.

In cooperation with Cyprus Twentymile Coal Co., researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSI-I), Spokane Research Laboratory, conducted a study at the Foidel Creek Mine, an underground coal mine near Oak Creek, CO, to evaluate the stability of underground working conditions as a longwall advanced through a series of backfilled cross-panel entries. Instruments installed in the cross-panel entry pillars, backfill, longwall panel, and adjacent headgate entry were continuously monitored by a computerized data acquisition system as the longwall approached and advanced through the backfilled section of the panel. Data collected from these instruments were analyzed to determine the magnitude and direction of the secondary principal stress changes ahead of the longwall face, deformation and closure of the headgate entry, and stability of the cross-panel entry pillars and backfill. A three-dimensional, boundary element model was calibrated to accurately predict mining-induced stress changes and the distance they occurred ahead of the longwall face. As the longwall advanced through the backfilled entries, most of the mining-induced load was supported by the cross-panel entry pillars. The backfill provided stability for the root and Moor of the in-panel entries and also confined the entry pillars significantly improving their load-carrying capacity. Comprehensive information derived from backfill material property tests, instrument data, underground observations, and numeric modeling results document the safety and stability of the 8-Right minethrough and should provide beneficial case study information fur other longwall backfilling applications in the future.

This study presents a typical stress-strain model for coal material using the available in-situ and laboratory tests data conducted on coal. This model can be used as a basic coal model in finite element applications The effects of pillar width-to-height ratio and the confining pressure have been considered in this model. The extended Drucker-Prager model with mobilized friction angle was found to be very successful in simulating the proposed model.

The present study attempts to critically review the pillar-design as required by Coal Mines Regulations of India vis-a-vis latest rockmechanics formulae, Equivalent material modelling was the approach adopted for testing the safety and stability of the pillar sizes predicted by various formulae. Two parameters, considered here for calculating pillar sizes was the stresses acting over the pillars and the strength of the pillars. Stresses acting on the pillars were calculated by the tributary area method. Based on the studies of Coates and Hustrulid, the stress obtained was reduced by 40 percent. For calculating the strength of the pillars, three formulae, namely Holland and Gaddy, Salamon and Munro and Central Mining Research Station, India, were used. The pillar widths were then determined by equating the product of recommended factor of safety and pillar stress with the pillar strength.

Difficult mining conditions in deep western U.S. Iongwalls have necessitated the use of novel tailgate support systems. Extreme ground movement in these yielding gate systems has caused operators to utilize secondary support systems which match yield and strength characteristics with expected ground reaction. Other benefits include ventilation and safety gains, as well as lower costs. Recently, the use of novel support has been tried at longwall mines in other U.S. coal basins. One of the main considerations is the capability of the support to maintain an adequate airway for gob ventilation in gassy eastern coal mines. In one large Pennsylvania mine working the Pittsburgh seam, a number of support configurations were monitored over a 2,300 ft tailgate test area. The test included 4-pt wood cribs, Link-N-Lock cribs, Propsetter yieldable posts, cable trusses, and vertical cable bolts. Ground reaction, and thus support performance, was documented by roof sag and convergence instruments, ventilation measurements, and photographs. Various combinations of standing support and cable truss and vertical cable bolts provided adequate support for ventilation and safe escape. A cribless configuration consisting of only cable trusses and vertical cable bolts was inadequate to provide inby gob ventilation to the next open crosscut. Instrument ground movement data and visual documentation are presented.

This paper presents the results of a case study conducted in a two-entry gateroad in a coal mine where excessive roof deformation and bolt loading resulted in failure of many roof supports. The instruments consisted of 16 fully grouted, strain gaged resin bolts, load cells on both full and partially grouted cable bolts, and vertical deflection multipoint extensometers. These instruments were installed on-cycle to measure loading on bolts in an existing support pattern and to determine if cable bolts could be used to improve roof stability. Results showed significant amounts of movement within the bolted zone. In sonic cases, these movements were enough to load the supports past their ultimate strength. Geology appeared to be a significant factor in localized roof degradation; that is, a very weak rock layer in the immediate roof overlain by a very strong rock layer contributed to the development of shear planes. Only one instrumented bolt had a maximum strain of less than 2,000 microstrain, which was the yield point of the steel. The average maximum strain on all bolts was 20.000 microstrain. However, electrical continuity to many gages was lost, and a pattern was noted that would indicate possible bolt failure. Wire mesh and concrete cans installed as secondary support performed very effectively.

The reinforcement mechanism of suspension effect is analyzed based on beam-column theory. The equations of the maximum bending stress, deflection and transferred bolt load for the bolted roof strata are derived. In the analysis, the bolt load is assumed to be point load and the horizontal stress is uniformly applied to each stratum. The reinforcement mechanism of friction effect is also analyzed. The major function of roof bolting in this case is to create the friction¬al resistance by tensioning the roof bolts, thereby the individual thin strata are "welded" into one single thick stratum. Based on the results, equal spacing of roof bolts is used in the suspension effect while for friction effect, the bolts should be spaced based on equal shear force concept. The design nomographs for the proper bolting pattern and bolt ten¬sion of mechanical roof bolting systems are presented for practical applications.

The challenge of planning to minimize interaction effects in multi-seam mining is compounded by the difficulties inherent in extrapolating essential geological and spatial data between sampling points. To predict the effects of ultra-close mining on lower seam entry stability, simulated mine openings were studied using finite element analysis and body loaded photoelastic models. Both symmetrical and unsymmetrical loading was used to represent stress fields generated under multi-seam conditions. Results were correlated with field data to determine stress levels at which failure could be expected to occur. Stability predictions require precise definitions of geologic and spatial data, which could not be accurately defined by interpolation between sampling points. To overcome this problem an expanded roof stability model, SESAME2, was developed to incorporate reliability concepts based on Monte Carlo sampling. The model was demonstrated in terms of variations of innerburden thickness using a case study.

This paper will inform the reader of the general data concerning hard coal reserves? number of mines, number of miners, output, number of longwalls, productivity, depth of extraction, and extraction methods?in both countries. The main part of the paper describes the methods of gateroad development as well as gateroad support characteristics (support types, gateroad shape and dimensions, distance between support sets, types of reinforcements). The development prospects of gateroad support in the Czech and Polish coal mining industry are also presented.
