INTRODUCTION Our present estimates of world P205 consumption for all uses show an average annual growth rate of approximately 1.9% per year. The estimated 1985 consumption of 41.5 million tonnes of P205 is predicted to increase to 57.1 million tonnes of P205 by the year 2005, which represents a growth from 157.7 million tonnes in 1985 to 217 million tonnes of phosphate rock in 2005. The present situation of oversupply and extremely weak phosphate product prices is, however, expected to continue in the short term and a normal supply/demand balance may not be achieved until after 1990. The growth in P205 demand, in conjunction with the higher cost of replacing low cost mines as they are depleted, will place economic pressure on world farm economies through the increased cost of phosphate fertilizers. The availability of rock supply is not the challenge; rather, it is the economics of new rock supply. This economic challenge of providing new rock supply is by no means limited to the United States. Even in centrally controlled economies, the cost of rock from domestic mines of marginal quality and economic viability, coupled with burdensome infra¬structure requirements, may result in tonnage additions at very high cost. Although government subsidies to offset higher production cost is a factor in some countries, world production in the next 20 years will be directed, if not governed, by economic factors. Established infrastructure, good quality reserves, and existing operations will provide a competitive advantage for new prod¬uction. It is our opinion that the current world supply structure will remain relatively stable through 2005, in that most of the traditional suppliers will retain supply roles. U.S. rock production, although it is not expected to grow beyond the present level, will still be a major contributor to world supply. Although dramatic changes within mining, fertilizer production and farm economics may appear disruptive, the current supply scenario will, in general, continue with the major issue being production economics. WORLD DEMAND Demand for P205 by region in the world has been estimated using projections of population, crops and yield, arable land, economic and other data as a basis for future demand projec¬tions by Blue-Johnson and Associates, our col¬laborators on a recent multi-client study. Non-fertilizer P205 demands were estimated in the same general manner. These estimates of future demand are based on an assumption of reasonable world political and economic stabil¬ity, debt repayment requirements maintained at workable levels, and resolution of problems in the agricultural economy to a point where normal supply/demand forces can interact freely to provide a basis for continued P205 supply. The results of these studies indicated an average growth rate of 1.9% per year through the year 2005. This growth could be as low as 1.5% per year, or as high as 2.5% per year. It is our opinion that the estimated rate of 1.9% per year is most probable. This moderate growth rate considers both the major economic constraints facing the world agricultural industry today and the general problem of affordability of fertilizers and other crop inputs. WORLD SUPPLY There are adequately defined world reserves of phosphate rock today to provide supply well into the future, even at much higher levels of demand than presently projected. Using the U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates, which are based on stringent criteria for definition of reserves, the present world reserves base is approximately 35 billion tonnes. Identified resources raise the potential for production by orders of magnitude. Potential resources based on geological trends, and including offshore deposits, would again result in orders of magnitude increases in rock resources. Morocco leads the world in reserves base with approxi¬mately 21 billion tonnes. The U.S. is second, followed by the Republic of South Africa and Russia. These four countries control about 87%

"For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. Grinding has a marked effect on concentrator recovery and opera- ting cost, improved operation through automatic control can enhance plant performance. The correct application of automatic control can only be accomplished after the basic process variables and their effect on mill operation have been defined. This paper develops a control system for a closed circuit grinding system. Typical control systems such as feed, water flow, level and circulating load are discussed. A method of determining controllability is outlined using the calculated reaction curve technique. Various successful methods of automatic grinding control applications are discussed and future possibilities are outlined. Although this paper primarily deals with closed circuit wet grinding circuits, the principles involved can be readily applied to other processes.

To fully utilize a ventilation simulator as a planning and production tool, the network database must keep pace with mining progress. By using AutoCAD's attribute-definition function, the branch data and node coordinates can be stored as part of the branch-diagram file, and updated with the drawing. Attributes are drawing entities that contain text which can be extracted in a standard spreadsheet format or as an ASCII text file. The data can be subsequently loaded into a ventilation simulator with plotting capabilities, such as VNETPC. This paper presents the methodology for using AutoCAD's attribute feature in a ventilation simulation.

In the garden of national problems recognized by the American public, imports of mineral products is a hardy perennial. Concern for the security of mineral supplies has preoccupied nations since the industrial revolution and the mechanization of warfare. Since 1973, Americans have also been sensitized to the potential economic costs of overseas mineral supply disruptions and the cartelization of foreign production. Though oil prices have plunged since 1981, the import dependency issue remains topical. Political turmoil in Southern Africa reminds us that mineral supply disruptions will occur in the future as they have in the past. Producers of iron and steel, copper, and refined petroleum products seek protection from imports on national security grounds. The Reagan administration is proposing sweeping changes in the management of the federal mineral stockpiles. s an enduring need to take stock of the mineral trade position of the United States. This article considers the changing role that the U.S. has played in the twentieth century in non-fuel minerals trade. We begin by enunciating some principles that are useful in analyzing this trade. The changing pattern of trade in the 1900-1969 period is then reviewed. There follows a more detailed analysis of mineral trade trends in the 1970-84 period. Some consideration is given in the final section to the significance of non-fuel mineral trade for the U.S. economy. THE ECONOMICS OF U.S. MINERAL TRADE The allocation of non-fuel mineral products in the United States has in this century been accomplished primarily through the market mechanism. Except where trade barriers have distorted price signals, this means that mineral supplies have been obtained from the least cost source, with little regard for their country of origin. Mineral prices facing U.S. firms are sensitive to shifts in the domestic supply and demand, but are also sensitive to economic conditions overseas. The balance of trade in each mineral product has depended on the amount that is profitably produced and consumed domestically at the world price. The nation has produced exactly as much as it has consumed only by chance. U.S. demand for non-fuel minerals is derived from the demand for manufactures, farm commodities, and other goods whose production requires mineral products as inputs. The demand for such goods can be quite volatile, and in most industries moves cyclically due to its sensitivity to the level of aggregate economic activity. The supply of mineral products depends on the cost of extracting and processing mineral raw materials. These costs do not vary greatly in the short run. Because of these attributes of mineral markets, U. S. trade in mineral products fluctuates considerably from year to year. Most of this volatility results from shifts in domestic and overseas demand and from changes in exchange rates and trade barriers. Longer run changes in the mineral trade pattern can also be discerned. These depend on secular trends in demand and in the cost of mineral extraction and processing at home and overseas. The United States was originally endowed with extensive reserves of an array of mineral-rich ores and fossil fuels. It is also a nation with an entrepreneurial climate and technological capability conducive to extracting and processing those reserves. Not surprisingly, it has at one time or another ranked among the world's leading producers of a great many mineral products. With a population that is large and an economy that is technologically advanced by world standards, the U.S. has also been a leading consumer of mineral products. Because of its voracious appetite, the bulk of mineral products produced domestically has traditionally been consumed domestically as well. Net exports have been sizable only in those industries in which the nation has enjoyed an extraordinary cost advantage. "The reliable prediction of service lifetime of tunnel constructions is of essential technical and economic interest. Polymers used for tunnel liners have to fulfill the requirement of 100 years lifetime. However, today no reliably proven test method is available which confirms such long lifetimes. The current paper introduces a recently started research project which focuses on lifetime prediction of highly flexible, very low density polyethylene (VLDPE) for tunnel geomembranes. Different PE grades in combination with different antioxidant packages are conditioned at elevated temperatures and immersed in different media. Initial results confirmed significant material aging of unstabilized resins already after exposure of up to 34 weeks, at least at the highest exposure temperature of 80 °C. To consider application relevant material properties the material characterization was done by means of tensile tests and dynamic oxidation induction temperature tests. High pressure liquid chromatography was used for further investigation of antioxidant consumption kinetics. 1. INTRODUCTION For a reliable service of modern tunnel constructions a sustainable proofing against water infiltration is essential for the lifetime of the structure. Geomembranes made of polymeric materials have been used successfully for tunnel lining since several decades. Whereas previous geomembranes usually were made of plasticized polyvinylchloride (PVC-P), due to several technical advantages today very low density polyethylene (VLDPE) has become a more and more popular material for such applications. For modern geomembranes, current guidelines expect minimum lifetimes of at least 100 years (ÖBV-Richtlinie 2012). In contrast to this requirement it must be considered that today no test methodology is available which reliably confirms such long lifetimes of polymeric materials."

The water treatment industry has historically been involved with reducing or inhibiting the inherant scale forming or fouling tendencies of natural waters associated with large industrial cooling water systems. Fouling is an extremely complex phenomenon. From a fundamental point of view, it may be characterized as a combined momentum, heat, and mass transfer problem. Chemical reaction kinetics is involved, as well as the solubility characteristics of salts in water and corrosion technology. It is a routine practice to over size pumps, piping and heat exchangers to compensate for fouling.

A mathematical model of the industrial hydrocyclone based on fluid dynamics is a better alternative to the currently existing empirical models. The swirling-flow velocities are determined by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with an appropriate turbulence model. The solution of the momentum-balance equations yields the flow field inside the hydrocyclone which determines the particle trajectories, and subsequently the classification curve. The essence of the model is that the physical dimensions of the hydrocyclone and the slurry characteristics can be incorporated, and the influence of these parameters reflects on the flow predictions. The predicted tangential and axial velocities in a 250-mm hydrocyclone are in good agreement with the laser-Doppler velocimetry measurements. Finally, the predicted classification curves show good agreement with experimental data measured on a KREBS Dl0B hydrocyclone.

Chemical zoning studies of mineralization can be useful in guiding exploration efforts. They permit one to determine the limits of mineralization and to correlate mineralized intervals in drill holes. Fahlore minerals are well suited for zoning studies because they are common minerals found in a variety of deposits, exhibit chemical diversity, and record the chemical evolution of migrating hydrothermal fluids. Zoning information in the form of metal ratios preserved in fahlore minerals was used to determine ore body limits in the Orcopampa precious metal system, Peru, and to correlate between multiple ore horizons in a sediment hosted massive sulfide (SHMS) currently under investigation. The current generations of electron microprobes provide the most efficient, accurate and economic way to analyze the tens to hundreds of sample required to successfully describe and use zoning information at the mine scale.

Two of Peabody Western Coal Company's mine operations are the focus of this paper ... Black Mesa Mine and Kayenta Mine, both located in Northern Arizona. These two locations are unique for a variety of reasons. ? The two mines have only two customers, both power plants, one the Southern California Edison's Mohave Generating Station near Laughlin, NY, the other the Navajo Generating Station near Page, AZ. Close in proximity, these two locations ships nearly 12 million tons of coal per year. ? Material is shipped to these customers two ways: via a 273 mile underground slurry pipeline, which by the way is longest in the world, and by a 17 mile long conveyor to four storage silos. Product is then shipped via train from the storage silos to the plant sites.

The Howe Coal Company located in Leflore County, Oklahoma is mining the Oklahoma Lower Hartshorne Coal bed which ranges in thickness from 38" to 42" and dips approximately 7 degrees to the Northeast. The Lower Hartshorne bed lies within the Hartshorne sandstone in Oklahoma but is as much as 60 feet above this sandstone formation in Arkansas. This coal bed extends throughout the Arkansas Oklahoma coal basin, which is about 50 miles wide and 180 miles long and progresses from a semi anthracite in Arkansas to a low-volatile coal in the eastern part of the Oklahoma to a high-volatile coal in the western area. The Howe Mine #1 in the eastern area is mining a low-volatile bituminous coal which has been used as metallurgical coal since the early 1900's as evidence of Bee-hive coke ovens still remain near the town Howe, a few miles northwest of the mine site. The Howe Mine is the first mine in the area to use modern mining equipment, however, numerous punch mines have been worked along the outcrop south of the mine site dating from 1900 with the last closing in 1965. The coal characteristics of the Lower Hartshorne rival the Pocahontas seam in chemistry and coking qualities. This paper will be concerned with the preparation of the coal for the Japanese steel market. The three man crew necessary to operate the plant are the operator, the helper, and the equipment operator needed to feed the raw coal hopper. An additional equipment operator is available on the day shift for coal loading and moving the clean coal to the storage pile as the area under the clean coal belt is only large enough for 1 shifts production. We are at present running the plant on a 2 shift per day basis.

Water chemistry data were used to identify the sources of ground-water and surface-water inflow to the IOZ block cave mine. Water samples were collected to obtain vertical and lateral hydrochemical profiles within different levels of the underground workings. Water chemistry data were evaluated in conjunction with geologic and structural information to define controls on locations of ground-water inflows, and to select targets for drilling and interception of water. Drilling has intercepted water-producing zones that were previously unidentified through mapping and drilling. The program has resulted in a reduction in water inflows to the block cave area.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Shortwall mining is one of the newest mining meth¬ods to be introduced into the world coal industry. The technique of shortwalling seems to have a number of origins, but it is generally agreed that it is an outgrowth of pillar-and-stall mining where timbering was employed as the primary means of roof support. In early opera¬tions the face was undercut by a shortwall cutter, hand¬bored, and blasted. The coal was loaded by hand or gathering arm loader. Australia, having experienced success with this method, advanced the technique through the use of mechanized roof supports in 1968. Although there were several attempts at shortwalling in the US, it was not until 1973 that Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Federal No. 1 mine successfully extracted a shortwall panel. Table 1 is a list of shortwall opera¬tions in the US as of April 1976. Shortwall mining is a method of mining in which a continuous miner cuts and loads from the short end of a rectangular pillar of coal while hydraulically powered self-advancing roof supports provide protective cover. Characteristics of a shortwall system include panel di¬mensions (Fig. 1) of 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) in length, face widths of 30 to 61 m (100 to 200 ft), straight-line ventilation, and production machinery, with the exception of roof supports, commonly used on con¬tinuous miner units. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS The justification for shortwalling is primarily eco¬nomic, i.e., increased production and recovery concur¬rent with savings in material and labor. The method also has a number of secondary benefits including the much needed progress it has stimulated in deep mine technology, the alternatives it presents to some of the problems resulting from the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, and is perhaps a key to the solution of the enigmatic labor problems which plague the industry. The advantages of shortwall mining over continuous miner units include the following: a highly effective method of ventilation and dust control; a greater per¬centage of extraction (approximately 85%) ; fewer equipment moves, hence more efficient operating time; cost savings on materials such as roof bolts, rock dust, ventilation curtains, timbering materials, and the labor needed to supply, load, and transport these materials; a cyclical pattern of mining, each phase of which, i.e., development and retreat, lasts for approximately three months and appears to be psychologically motivating as well as highly productive; and improved safety. In addition to these positive aspects, a shortwall sys¬tem also has advantages over a longwall system, and these are listed as follows: the capital outlay for a shortwall system is one-third to one-fourth that for a longwall (1976 prices); the shortwall system utilizes equipment that is used on a continuous miner section, with the ex¬ception of the roof support system; there is a great deal of flexibility in areas with numerous gas wells and in areas where surface subsidence cannot be tolerated; the shortwall has reduced tailgate problems, since the tail¬gate entry serves as a return airway only; and the cyclical pattern of mining insures that the mining machinery pro¬duces coal even while the roof support system is being moved to another panel. There are several parameters which govern the se¬lection and use of a shortwall system. They are all of equal importance, and hence are not listed in any par¬ticular order. These are deposit size, seam height, seam inclination, roof and floor conditions, depth of over¬burden, subsidence and chain pillar extraction, man¬power, ventilation, and materials handling. Deposit Size Reserves available for shortwalling should be suffi¬cient for at least an eight to ten-year period, since this seems to be the effective life, without rebuilding, of a hydraulic roof support under average conditions. Several factors contributed to continued declines in mineral-exploration activity in the US in 1985. Low metal prices and, what appears to be worldwide chronic excess capacity in copper, molybdenum, lead, and uranium, have resulted in mineral-exploration expenditures remaining anemic. Economic recovery could result in a healthier mining industry and more cash flow to fund exploration. This is because general economic activity and US mining industry activity have historically been closely linked. However, as the worldwide economic recovery has expanded, the mining sector has continued its downward slide. New cuts in industry exploration budgets in 1985 shocked those who thought the exploration situation could not become worse. Some personnel and equipment had been redirected from base metals exploration to precious metals in the past few years. Last year, continued reductions in exploration sent many professionals out of the mining industry. Recent staff reductions or consolidations of operations were made by Noranda, Chevron, Molycorp, and other exploration companies. The latest data from the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) summary of exploration statistics show that professional staff at year end in major US exploration companies (domestic and foreign operations) fell from 2355 in 1981 to 1868 in 1983 and 1277 in 1984. By the end of 1985, two economic trends were established that could improve the future profitability of mining and hence exploration. First, the price of crude oil began a decline. If sharply reduced energy prices increase worldwide economic expansion, the substantial excess capacity in some of the base metals industries could disappear, and prices could improve. Furthermore, if energy price declines reduce mining and processing costs significantly, metals may recapture some lost markets. The decline in oil revenues has already encouraged some oil-producing countries, such as Venezuela, to look toward development of mineral resources to earn foreign exchange for debt repayment. Second, the decline of the dollar by 21% during 1985 could also help US producers meet foreign competition. During 1985, industry restructuring continued as many oil companies sold off mining subsidiaries and minerals properties. Gold, silver in new discoveries Precious metals continued to dominate the announcement of new discoveries and exploration projects in 1985. A review of domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals shows that 60% to 80% of these projects were directed primarily at precious metals, particularly gold. Base metals exploration activities frequently involved polymetallic deposits with gold or silver values. Because much of this exploration was done on identified targets (on-property exploration), the decrease in wildcat or grassroots (off-property) exploration may be more substantial than indicated by reductions in total exploration activity. Significant gold discoveries in 1985 included several in Nevada, among them the Genesis property of Newmont (near the Carlin mine), Goldfields' discovery of the Chimney deposit in Humboldt Co., and Freeport's discovery of two mineralized sites near Jerritt Canyon. Gold exploration continued to be focused in the western US and Alaska, but gold production starts at the Haile mine in South Carolina, and the Ropes mine in Michigan as well as Amselco's feasibility studies on deposits near Ridgeway, SC, are evidence that gold exploration is not limited to the West. The dominance of gold projects in exploration is not limited to the US, as demonstrated by gold dis¬coveries and exploration projects in Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Caribbean region, China, Guinea, Ivory Coast, South Africa, the South Pacific islands, and Thailand. From the standpoint of US metal miners, it is perplexing that worldwide exploration and development is also taking place in copper, zinc, tungsten, and other metals with depressed prices. During 1985, the US Geological Survey's efforts to map the sea floor of the Exclusive Economic Zone shifted from the Pacific Coast to the deep water areas of the Gulf of Mexico and to areas off the coast of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. An atlas containing sea-floor maps of the west coast area was published as US Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Series Map 1-1792. Results of the 1985 surveys are expected to be published by January 1987. Exploration trends - Statistical evidence Data from the SEG showed continued decline in the US mining industry's exploration expenditures through 1984. The share of US companies' domestic exploration expenditures directed toward base and precious metals has increased from 51% to 84% from 1980 to 1983 and to 86% in 1984. US mining companies spent about $0.67 of each exploration dollar in 1984 in the US. However, this represents an increase from earlier years. The 1983 data also show that firms spending more than $5 million on exploration accounted for 77% of exploration expenditures. "The purpose of this paper is to review the most effective methods of reducing chloride transfer and chloride removal in the solution extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW) process. Elevated chlorides in electrolyte have various negative effects including a reduction in current efficiency, increased handling costs at rod plants and smelters, increased anode corrosion, cobalt losses due to increased electrolyte bleed, degradation of HDPE piping, and increased corrosion in the SX/EW plants. Historical controls that Sierrita has used to control chloride transfer, in order of effectiveness, have been chloride gasification at the EW that is directly correlated to amperage and chloride concentration in electrolyte, wash stage bleed and efficiency, width and velocity of aqueous bands, and electrolyte bleeds. Maintaining high bleed rates and high amperage settings has been a challenge with decreasing pregnant leach solution (PLS) grades, so keeping chlorides out of the electrolyte has become imperative. The effectiveness of reducing aqueous entrainment, optimizing wash stage efficiencies, and improving organic quality to reduce the transfer of chlorides to the electrolyte are illustrated in this study. INTRODUCTION The transfer of impurities from PLS feed streams to electrolyte in the Copper Solution Extraction process is a very common problem and is the reason that the wash stage exists in most SX operations. The main impurities affecting the SX process are iron, chloride, nitrate, and manganese. Elevated chlorides in the electrolyte have various negative effects including reduced current efficiency, increased handling costs at rod plants and smelters, increased anode corrosion, increased cobalt losses due to increased electrolyte bleed, degradation of HDPE piping, and increased corrosion in the SX/EW plants. Freeport-McMoRan Sierrita Hydromet is unique in that a high-chloride byproduct stream from the molybdenum process is pumped into the SX raffinate solution pond. This byproduct steam accounts for the majority of chloride introduced to the circuit, and over the years has built up to a point where 4000ppm chloride is consistently in the PLS feed to the SX. Concentrations of chloride over 70 ppm in electrolyte will result in downgraded cathode, so it is important to limit chloride carryover from SX as much as possible. Historically, Sierrita has been able to manage chloride levels with reactive techniques including increasing electrolyte bleeds and rectifier amps. Decreasing copper in PLS has made high amps harder to maintain, and increasing bleed rates have a direct impact on production goals."

"The development and advancement of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has made it possible to better understand pollutant flow and distribution in deep open pit mines. Open pits located at higher latitudes, especially in the Arctic and sub-Arctic, face a unique problem due to atmospheric temperature inversion, which is prevalent during much of the winter. A three-dimensional CFD model of an actual open pit mine in the Arctic was developed to analyze the problem of pollutant growth during inversion, and mitigation of the pollutants through improved ventilation schemes. Due to the availability of mine-specific data, such as contaminant concentrations and coordinates of sampling locations, the actual 2013 pit geometry was used for model validation Concentrations predicted by the selected realizable ?-e turbulent model are compared to measured pollutant concentrations at the open pit. Pollutant concentrations at selected locations showed differences, but remained within the same order of magnitude in most cases. INTRODUCTION Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has emerged as a useful tool for ventilation modeling in underground mines (Edwards and Hwang 1999, Purushotham and Bandopadhyay 2009, Wala et al. 1998, Xu et al. 2011). Application of CFD in open pit mines has been limited, however, since most open pit mines located at lower latitudes do not encounter considerable ventilation problems. Open pits located at higher latitudes, especially the Arctic and sub-Arctic, face a unique problem due to atmospheric temperature inversion, which is prevalent during winter. A number of Russian researchers have tried to understand the air inversion and resulting pollutant transport problem by modeling air flow phenomena in open pit mines (Baklanov and Burman 1996, Baklanov 1984, Baklanov 1995, Belousov 1985, 1989, 1995). Much of their work, however, was based on numerical models and methods of finite difference. Baklanov (2000) applied a modified ?-e and a ?-l CFD model to air flow phenomena on various terrains. More recently, Choudhury (2011) used the COMSOL CFD package for modeling pollutant transport for an idealized open pit mine. Collingwood et al. (2012a, 2012b) used a two-dimensional model for fluid flow and contaminant transport at an Arctic open pit mine. The authors have also previously presented work on CFD modeling of an actual open pit mine at high latitude (Bandopadhyay et al. 2014, Raj et al. 2015a). However, the CFD work done by the above-cited researchers lacked model validation with field-measured data. Validation of a developed model is important in assessing the quality and accuracy of the predicted results. In general, experiments are done numerous times in controlled environments to assess the validity of collected data. There are two types of assessments used in CFD simulations: (1) verification and (2) validation. Model verification is checking the accuracy of the computer codes during the implementation phase of a real-world problem, within the specific limits of accuracy (Oberkampf and Trucano 2002). Since, the pollution transport model presented in this paper used the commercial ANSYS-FLUENT CFD package, verification is not needed as the program has been tested widely, and verified numerous times."

Mining and environmental objectives have traditionally been in conflict. This conflict reflects a delicate balance between the need to spend money to protect the environment, and the need to save money by extracting minerals efficiently. In an increasing number of cases, profit margins diminish rapidly with new environmental regulations and reactionary measures. Forced cleanups and increasing restrictions are unwelcome expensive processes. A practical solution lies in planning rather than reacting. This requires the ability to precisely quantify and qualify environmentally sensitive problems by providing effective engineering tools to model, visualize and analyze subsurface conditions. Prevention of environmental conflicts, and effective cost control are both rooted in the mining company's ability to construct accurate models, monitor changes, assess contamination risks and to design effective remediation plan. This paper presents a case study where these issues are addresses through the application of a new and innovative technology.

Ground control analysis and groundwater inflow assessments for underground coal mines require in-depth field investigations including, but not limited to, geological and geotechnical core logging, downhole geophysical logging, laboratory rock strength testing, and packer (Lugeon) testing. Field and laboratory data collection are time consuming and expensive, and an initial understanding of the expected trends among various geotechnical and hydrogeological parameters can assist with the planning and optimization of geotechnical characterization studies and grouting plans. In this study, a comprehensive database is analyzed, comprised of important rock mass characteristics (hydraulic conductivity, rock quality designation (RQD), and lithology) for coal-bearing rocks in the Central Appalachian Basin. Statistical analysis of the data is completed to establish an enhanced understanding of geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions expected to be encountered as underground coal mining passes near and beneath streams and rivers. The results of the study provide valuable reference material for the coal mining industry for completion of shaft installations, mine stream crossings, environmental assessments, and grouting and mine dewatering designs.

The Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has partnered with a narrow vein, hard rock underground mine to research the effects of the binder content on the elasticity and post-peak ductility of cemented hydraulic backfill (CHB). This is part of a larger study to enhance the long-term integrity of ground support in underground mines. As mining advances deeper and stresses increase, CHB mix designs will benefit if they can be modified to handle higher levels of strain which are induced by an increased stope closure, typically affected by a reduction in stope width and increased mining depth, or through dynamic loading resulting from a local seismic event. This portion of the research examined the impact of reductions in binder and their impact on Young’s modulus, peak strength, and post-peak ductility.
