A multi-lift benching cut-and-fill mining method was adopted at Asamera Minerals (U. S.), Inc.'s Cannon Mine to balance the goals of high productivity and near 100 percent recovery with the need to minimize subsidence. High strength backfill was required to provide effective long-term overburden support and safe working conditions during the pillar recovery operations. Operational designs were evaluated using numerical modeling to predict global mine stability and backfill strength requirements. These models incorporated sequential mining of primary stopes, backfilling of primary stopes and recovery of pillars, and have been transferred to the mine operations group for use in evaluating different production sequences. The modeling has provided a better understanding of the structural response of the mine to excavation of the primary stopes and removal of the pillars. Predictions about the transfer of overburden weight to the abutments, pillars and cemented fill pillars have provided a criterion to evaluate mining plans and production sequence. Comparison of these predictions with actual mine structural performance has developed confidence in the design of the mining method and in the geomechanical design methods being employed. Primary mining of the B-North zone is nearly complete, and the stopes have been generally stable, as projected in the original design. The increasing popularity of column flotation as an efficient and profitable mineral beneficiation technique has resulted in the need to perform a study of basic column operating parameters in order to understand mineral behavior in a column. Variation of column rougher flotation parameters on the Nevada Fish Creek fluorite and Utah Collins manganese ores enabled characterization of four beneficiation zones within a column flotation cell. Although specific mineral behavior in each zone was peculiar to the mineral system involved, particle retention time predominantly affected both manganese and fluorite recoveries in the collection zones of the column while enhancing mineral grades in the cleaning zones. Column parameters such as column length, feed injection location, and tailings recirculation velocity were inherently linked to particle retention time and retention time distribution, both of which affected mineral recovery. Froth depth had a discernible effect on fluorite concentrate grades; as froth depth increased, fluorite grades increased. Wash water additions affected both fluorite and manganese recoveries and fluorite grade. Axial mixing drastically reduced fluorite and manganese recoveries due to short circuiting of some of the feed slurry in the column.

"Hydrocyclone separators are widely used in various industrial applications in the oil and mining industries to sort, classify and separate solid particles or liquid droplets within liquid suspensions, which are considered to be multi-phase systems. Numerous valuable studies have been conducted in recent years to investigate the flow fields inside hydrocyclones. However, much of the information regarding the performance of cyclones in the literature has limitations, based in some part on the respective current-available theoretical models, and much of it cannot be considered as completely applicable to most real-world applications; many of the studies investigated the flow fields within extremely simplified hydraulic designs that are not representative of the complex geometries or large sizes which are typical in industry. Therefore, in this study, the two phase flow system inside the actual hydraulic geometry of a milling circuit hydrocyclone was explored with the aid of both computational and experimental techniques (Particle Image Velocimetry). In this study, the flow field with an air core has been investigated; in essence, the research was a two-phase problem, which caused some challenges on both the computational and experimental sides. Two turbulence models were used in the numerical calculations: the Reynolds Stress Model and Large Eddy Simulation. The computational studies are mainly focused on the prediction of the dimensions and shape of the air core. Different section planes of the hydrocyclone were selected as planes of interest and then were divided into several fields of view (FOV) for PIV measurements. Two dimensional experimental velocity vector maps were obtained in each of the fields of view. The computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow rate readings at the boundaries and locally by comparison to the PIV velocity vector maps and profiles. INTRODUCTION A hydrocyclone is a device used to separate a solid-liquid, liquid-liquid, solid-gas, or liquid-gas suspensions into at least two separate density or particle size components. Hence, the flow field of the hydrocyclone is generally considered a multi-phases flow system. Application of hydrocyclones have been used in numerous industries including oil, drilling, metal working, and mineral processing since 1891, when E. Bretney obtained the first patent for the predecessor design of all contemporary hydrocyclones. A modern hydrocyclone typically consists a cylindrical section at the top where the liquid is being fed tangentially, and a conical chamber attached to the bottom of the cylindrical section, as shown in Figure 1. The characteristics of the feed stream that is injected into the cylindrical chamber play a significant role in hydrocyclone operation. The inlet is tangential relative to the cylindrical chamber and hence causes a centripetal force in the flow field which is considered as the primary separation mechanism."

The conventional magnetic separators used in the mineral industry are equipped with traditional magnetic circuits or with permanent magnets (rare earth). However, when processing minerals with low magnetic susceptibilities or minerals of very small particle size, these separators are inefficient. In addition, a conventional magnetic circuit consumes considerable amounts of electricity to generate a relatively low magnetic field (~2 Tesla). The equipment is also heavy and bulky. Only a separator having a superconducting sole-noid can contribute in solving most of the problems, and only such a separator can produce high magnetic fields with low energy consumption. New developments and the experience acquired in using these superconducting magnets have resulted in new uses for magnetic separation, especially in the environmental area. This paper presents and describes a separation system that uses superconducting magnets that are completely automated and able to treat raw materials (concentration or purification) or liquid industrial effluents containing heavy metals in solution. Several industrial sectors, including the surface treatment, petroleum and chemical industries, are generating effluents containing heavy metal ions. The main metal ions found in such effluents include zinc, copper and vanadium. The purification of such effluents by magnetic separation is performed by adding a certain proportion of iron salts. The treated effluent passes through a superconducting separator where the flocs are retained in a matrix of steel wires. The efficiency of supraconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) by this method exceeds 95%. Mineral separation and industrial-waste purification results are presented.

Virtual reality (VR) is a concept in which the human experience of perceiving and interacting with a computer-modeled environment is achieved through the use of sensors and effectors. It is an advanced form of computer graphics. The images are generated based on where the user looks and how the user moves. As personal-computer-based (PC) instruction gains acceptance as an innovative approach to providing safety training, VR can provide a multisensory, rather than merely a multimedia, mode of presentation. New technology continues to be introduced into the mining industry to meet the productivity needs of coal and noncoal producers. There is also an increased need for more innovative training of mine workers. New technology and equipment designs often affect the basic causes of accidents. For example, the development of cabs and canopies for underground coal-mine equipment has reduced the number of accidents related to roof falls and rib rolls. However, safety-training specialists then had to focus on the machines themselves, because the modifications had the potential for causing "pinch-point" accidents. In fact, although the overall physical demands on mine workers have diminished, there has been an escalation in the concerns about trauma from repetitive physical activity. Thus, health-and-safety training specialists have shifted their atten¬tion to the recognition, evaluation and control of workplace hazards (Hancock and Hill, 1995). Recognizing that the spatial relationships of a workplace convey more information about hazards when experienced rather than described, trainers agree that simulation is the method of choice. Unfortunately, until recently, simulation systems were either simple software programs that did not come close to portraying the real experience or were complex hardware systems (such as flight simulators) that did, but at a cost of millions of dollars (Fritz, 1991). However, researchers and training specialists are excited about an emerging approach to work-force education based on virtual reality. VR is also described as cyberspace, immersive simulation, artificial reality, telepresence, virtual environment or virtual world (Meyer and Dunn-Roberts, 1992; Peterson, 1992). It represents a group of concurrent advances in computer and interface technologies. They enable an individual to interact in a multisensory way with a computer-generated environment. To achieve this, a typical VR system incorporates a computer that contains the necessary databases for producing realistic images and audio; a head-mounted display (HMD) or screen for viewing the images; and a three-dimensional controller, joystick or data glove for interacting with the computer-generated environment. If virtual reality is to become an effective tool for the safety training of mine workers, its attributes will have to be measured against other forms of delivery. Accordingly, Carr (1992) listed the following areas in which VR should be considered the method of choice: ? When training mistakes would be costly. ? When the necessary environment cannot be experienced in the real world. ? To build interfaces that are sensible and can be manipulated. ? To make training situations really "real." ?To make perceptible the imperceptible.

In the last 20 years, studies on controlled flow recirculation in various countries have been carried out in both coal and metal mines. These studies have shown that in addition to economic gains, partial flow recirculation can be used to provide mine workings distant from surface access points with the required volumes of air. These studies have also shown that the operation of fans and regulators, used in a recirculation system, will induce transients in gas flow and gas concentration. Various models have been developed to explain the problem. However, most have failed to incorporate important factors such as diffusion and dispersion in the modeling process. This study examines the theoretical background of gas emission transients from caved areas in coal mines, represents the problem by a "tank-airway" network model, and provides a possible solution. The study also presents the results gained from a laboratory model constructed to evaluate the major factors affecting the shape and duration of gas flow and gas concentration transients in an airflow recirculation system. In this model, the gas injection system was rearranged to simulate the variations in gas emission rates due to changes in air pressure. Within this model, a set of booster fans and regulators were used to generate the changes in air pressure within the model. Finally, the study presents an algorithm and a computer program GASTRAN, developed to analyze the gas concentration transients and calculate the pollutant transport levels in a complex ventilation network. The application of the program is illustrated by means of an example problem.

A prototype expert system for planning and designing underground coal mines has been developed in a doctoral study (Basu, 1991) at the University of Kentucky (U.K.). The objective of the study was to provide a design tool for configuring layout parameters, production systems, and for determining economic feasibility. Details of knowledge engineering and the prototype knowledge-based system for integrated and intelligent planning and design have been covered in the dissertation. The prototype demonstrates its robustness by allowing interaction among major design components, most notably among ventilation, ground control, and production planning. A plan for testing and evaluating the prototype, an important phase of software development, is presented here. Existing evaluation procedures for expert system prototypes are discussed and the evaluations for the underground coal mine design expert system prototype are included. The initial testing plan used senior-level mining engineering students to test the acceptance of the prototype. This test suggested the usefulness of such a system for training and instruction. This initial acceptance test was performed with the feasibility prototype. The other test objective, i.e., testing the model's accuracy, involved extensive participation of domain experts. For overall accuracy evaluation, an existing underground coal mine design was compared with the output from a design session using the expert system prototype. The testing procedure is not an isolated, independent development phase. Much of the accuracy evaluation is done at the time of knowledge base development. Therefore, the knowledgebase itself does not need a formal test phase. The major purpose of the field testing is to determine probable user acceptance. The acceptance test determines the completeness of the prototype and also will determine efficiency of user interfaces.

The conversion of nickel and cobalt to the water-soluble sulphates forms the basis of some of the many methods of recovering these metals from their oxide and silicate ores. The applicability of these sulphation processes to a range of Australian oxidized ores is discussed. The chemical and hence mineralogical composition of the ores is shown to have a major influence on the degree of nickel and cobalt extraction. Different sulphation processes are compared, taking into account the influence of ore composition, and considering effects on reagent consumption and on subsequent metal recovery processes.

In 1970, recognizing the great need for an economical, high capacity chemical oxidation process for wastewater treatment, Houston Research began a fundamental study of the available technology, Included was waste characterization; oxidation chemistry for molecular oxygen, ozone and catalyst initiators; kinetics of reaction; gas-liquid contacting methods; and optimization of staged reactors for mixed wastes. Although ozone is the most powerful oxidizer available, the literature contains contradictory reports of its speed and effectiveness. It is now felt to be most likely that many of these early investigations were limited by the ineffectual transfer of ozone from the gas phase into the liquid, and so the investigators were really observing the effects of mass transfer and erroneously trying to interpret the results as if they were chemical reaction data. HR's work considered the cost and effectiveness of gas-liquid contacting in a packed tower, gas sparged contactor, ejector with hold-up tank, and a completely mixed, sparged contactor. The sparged, mixed contactor was found to be most effective and least expensive, and a later investigation settled on the reactor configuration shown in Figure 1 because of its effectiveness of mass transfer and because it lends itself to direct scale-up techniques using laboratory data to design larger reactors.

The heavy oil reservoirs of Alberta and Saskatchewan include sequences of unconeolidated silts and fine sands which respond in an unusual manner when subjected to the high temperature and pore-fluid-pressure associated with steam injection and other thermal enhanced recovery techniques. Apparent transient connections are suddenly established between producers and injectore and there is an associated enhancement in oil (and sand) production. These phenomena have been attributed to local fluidization and piping processes which are known to occur in situations where high pore-fluid-pressures prevent the mobilization of intergranular friction. These breakdown processes may be associated with the penetration of tongues of the heated reservoir fluids with suspended sand into the creep sensitive intact reservoir since the viscosity ratios are sufficiently high for viscous fingering instability of the fluid-fluid interface. A program of laboratory tests has been carried out to measure the strength characteristic of saturated oil sands at a variety of temperatures and fluid pressures. These tests suggest, that in common with the coarser Athabasca sands, the Waseca sands have very little cohesive strength and show the characteristic dilational failure response of dense sands. Some special tests, devised to determine the relative ease with which samples can be fluidized, confirm the expected susceptibility of the fine- sand silts. Both piping and fluidization can be readily induced at in-situ reservoir temperatures and pressures. Analysis of stresses around wellbores suggests that fluid-pressure gradients may be sufficient to initiate piping and that backward erosion along streamlines may link producers and injectors. Such pipes may act as well “adits” gathering oil from the heated reservoir and contributing to enhanced production rates. Mechanical breakdown of the reservoir by drilling, injection and production processes provides a consistent possible explanation for the sand-cut response of production wells.

This paper presents a preliminary phase of a study being conducted by the Department of Geochemistry of the Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables in the vicinity of the Pachuca-Real del Monte Mining District. This district is located in central Mexico, about 100 km northeast of Mexico City. It has been in operation for the past 450 years and has produced about 38 million kg of silver and about 190 thousand kg of gold. At the present it is being worked by the state owned mining company of Real del Monte and Pachuca. The rocks of the area consist mainly of Tertiary volcanics, ranging in age from early Oligocene to late Pliocene. Ore bodies are recognized as epithermal, vein type fracture fillings. The main ore minerals are argentite and acanthite normally accompanied by base metal sulphides, Gold is present in small amounts as native gold and in other minerals. Orientation geochemical studies performed on soil and rocks over known veins in the district, showed zinc to be the best indicator. Lead and silver anomalies are restricted to the immediate vicinity of the veins, mercury shows the mineralized structures only when the "C" horizon is sampled, while antimony gave erratic values. The El Chico area is about 10 km north of the Pachuca-Real del Monte district and covers approximately 400 sq km. Geological evidence indicated the possibility of an extension of the Pachuca ore bodies in this area. Results obtained from soil and rock samples from El Chico, showed several anomalous area. Detailed investigations proved these anomalies to be related to faults and fractures which in several cases have been found to be mineralized. Drilling is planned with preliminary results expected by late 1974.

The discussion of water and pit mining together is most appropriate. In fact, water can be considered a mineral and a well a narrow pit. Thus, of all the mineral resources mined, water is probably the cheapest, most valuable and least valued. The delivered price, including mining, transportation, storage and marketing rarely exceeds ten cents per ton, and our economy would cease without it. The time has come when the public must recognize that the extraction of a mineral resource from the land is a necessary and inevitable result of the industries? attempt to meet the demands of a growing economy. In so much of Florida, the lands mined can, with forethought and planning, be left as improved real estate, water conservation and management lands. On the other hand, the mining industries must face up to the need for the reclamation of land and compact with themselves, appropriate governmental agencies and with the mining states to restore mined lands to usefulness. Of limestone, sand, and clay 90 to 100 percent of the mined material is used, but with planning and specing, these pits, if they penetrate the water table, become valuable as real property. Phosphate, which returns about 70 percent of the mined materials to the pit, can reclaim the land for many purposes.

9.1 INTRODUCTION Precious metals in a leach solution are extracted, concentrated, and purified to complete the process begun in the heap and to produce an end product which will provide an economic payback to the mine developer/operator. Several different processes are required to convert the dissolved precious metals into pure metal bars. This chapter discusses the actual production of metal once it has been recovered from the pregnant leach solutions by the zinc cementation (Merrill -Crowe) or carbon adsorption processes. Metal production is generally taken to mean the production of a fairly pure "dore" bar. This chapter also reiterates some information from Chapter 8 in a slightly different context, since the focus of Chapter 8 was a fairly detailed description of the two actual recovery processes, whereas the focus of this chapter is metal production. The sale of an intermediate precious metal product is possible (as opposed to the production of dore bars at the mine site); however, the value of the precious metals is reduced by the various charges and risks associated with precious metal processing. For this reason, most operators choose to produce the most refined metal possible in order to maximize project economics. Precious metals may be extracted from the leach solution by both conventional and unconventional processes. The conventional processes are activated carbon/electrowinning (ACE) and zinc precipitation (ZIP). The unconventional processes are resin ion exchange, solvent extraction, and direct electrowinning. A typical ACE process has two circulating loops. The first loop adsorbs the cyanide-metal complexes from the dilute leach solution onto the activated carbon. A second, separate solution loop removes the cyanide-metal complexes from the activated carbon into a strong solution, the electrowinning electrolyte. Activated carbon is transferred from one fluid loop to the other. The operating cost of the ACE process is directly proportional to the quantity of carbon stripped and thus to the quantity of precious metal produced. A typical ZIP process contains a single circulating loop. The solution is filtered, deaerated, contacted with zinc, and filtered again. The barren leach solution is then returned to the heap. Rest potential and linear potential sweep techniques were used to study the cathodic-polarization processes on chalcopyrite, simulating chalcopyrite short-circuited with grinding media in a wet grinding mill. Microflotation tests were carried out to investigate the effect of cathodic polarization on the collectorless flotation of chalcopyrite. It was observed that collectorless flotation of a cathodically polarized chalcopyrite sample could he obtained when oxygen was used for aeration, but not if nitrogen was used. A mechanism for the role that oxygen plays in the collectorless flotation of cathodically polarized chalcopyrite is discussed.

Considerable success has been achieved in recent years in reducing concentrations of respirable dust in UK coalmines; thankfully this has been reflected in significant improvements in pneumoconiosis statistics. However, continuous increases in mechanisation and in rates of working, accompanied by more stringent dust regulations, necessitate the introduction of improved and often more sophisticated methods of dust control. The increased application of exhaust ventilation and air cleaning techniques seems likely to be the most important step forward in dust control in coalmining during the next few years. A typical drivage in a UK mine is not more than 16 ft (5 m) wide and is supported by steel arches. In the past the majority of such roadways were driven by the conventional means of blasting and loading. Since the main purpose of ventilation was to clear blasting fumes and to provide adequate scouring of firedamp, not surprisingly it was usual to have 'forcing' ventilation. Present systems of operation are making increasing use of heading machines and it is not surprising that well over half of all drivages are now ventilated by exhausting methods. (1) The great majority of coal getting in the UK is from longwall faces, usually in seams of less than 6 ft (1.8 m) thickness. Although this method of min¬ing has many advantages in terms of safety and productivity, dust control is made more difficult because of the need for men and machines to work in the same ventilation stream. Much emphasis has been placed on improving the design and methods of opera¬tion of longwall machines to reduce dust production, and improved ventilation has provided greater dilution, and in consequence, reductions in dust concentration. On all machines water is now fed through internal galleries to the cutting elements. Unfortunately, one of the difficulties associated with mining thin seams is that there is some unavoidable cutting in the roof or floor and in many seams there are faults to be traversed and dirt bands which must be removed with the coal. Under these conditions it appears that the use of exhaust ventilation and air cleaning offers the most promising way of achieving satisfactory dust conditions.

1.1 GENERALIZED METHODS OF SUPPRESSING THE INFLOW OF GROUND WATER DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHAFTS, DRIFTS AND TUNNELS Various methods are used to prevent or minimize the inflow of ground water into underground workings during their excavation. The two most common methods include freezing the saturated rock and grouting using cement, sodium silicate, polyurethane and/or other chemicals. Each of these technologies for combatting the inflow of ground water is effective only under specific hydrogeological conditions. For example, although the freezing of saturated ground is among the more universally adopted methods, it is designed to provide only temporary protection during construction. Before the saturated rock thaws it is necessary to emplace a waterproof liner which is labor intensive, time consuming, and expensive. Consequently, freezing is used only in exceptionally complex hydrogeological conditions, namely in those cases where the water-bearing strata consist of unstable rock or the ground water has an anomalous hydrochemistry. The classical grouting of saturated rock, carried out from the surface or from the face of the underground workings for the purpose of limiting the inflow of ground water during excavation, utilizes both cement and a variety of chemical grouts. Cement grouting has been regarded as the main method of combatting the inflow of ground water in fractured rock throughout the world. In such countries as the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Canada, the Republic of South Africa and Great Britain, cement grouting is the main method of reducing the inflow of ground water during the excavation of mine openings. In Great Britain and the FRG, cement grouting has been used in 80% of all shaft excavations. In the Republic of South Africa cement grouting has been used in almost 100% of all the shafts that have been constructed. The installation of grout curtains into permeable water- bearing strata significantly reduces their permeability and increases the rock strength. Grouting has the greatest effect in fractured sandstones, certain well indurated shales, fractured granites, fractured quartzites, and karstic limestones or dolomites. The following principal factors must be considered when assessing the expediency of grouting rock with cement: the geometry of the network of fracture openings, the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the fractured rock, the hydraulic head acting on the water in the rock, and the chemical composition of the ground water. On the basis of the geometry of the fractures and the thickness of each hydrostratigraphic unit, the characteristics of the cement grout are selected. As a rule, the cementing of large fractured zones with high ground water velocities is carried out using inert fillers (sand, mill slag, loam, loess, crushed limestone), special types of cement, setting accelerators, and high cement concentrations in water. Calcium chloride, soda ash, sodium silicate, sodium nitrate, amino alcohols, tin bichloride, trisulphate nitrate, and lumnite are used extensively as the setting accelerators for cement grouts. In the FRG and Poland, special cement injection compounds that embody a mixture of cement and active cement metal salts, water additives and binding substances are being used for the cementing of saturated zones with rapid ground water velocities. These reagents accelerate the rate of structure-forming reactions. In spite of the wide variety of additives used for cement grouts, the effectiveness of the method in large fractures below the water table is either poor or it leads to a very large consumption of cement due to the erosion of the grout through the cracks before it hardens. At the present time, a large number of cement types and brands are being produced by various countries. These variations permit cementing to be employed in a variety of geological conditions. However, both pure cement grout and grouts with fillers constitute unstable systems with a high water loss rate. Therefore during the grouting of finely fractured rock the cement grout's premature loss of a large amount of free water causes its consistency to increase, whereupon the grout solidifies. Consequently, it inadequately penetrates into the fine fractures of the stratum. In addition the high water loss rate in the cement grout causes unreacted cement particles to remain, which greatly reduces the grout hardness and the resulting rock strength characteristics are weakened. As a result, the binding properties of the cement are utilized perhaps up to 60%. The remaining portion is left in the grout as a filler. All these conditions significantly decrease the efficiency of the isolation effort both with respect to strength and cost. In order to expand the cement grouting method, re- search is being conducted to improve the quality of cement grout, to increase its range of application with respect to permeability control, to reduce its water loss rate and to increase its capacity to withstand the erosive and corrosive effects of poor quality ground water. Significant research has been conducted to evaluate the load transfer behavior of fully grouted rock bolts with experimental programs. However, compared with that, less work has been conducted with analytical modelling. Therefore, in this paper, the authors used an analytical model to study the load transfer behavior of fully grouted rock bolts. To confirm the credibility of this analytical model, an in-situ pull-out test was used to validate this model. There was a close match between the experimental result and the analytical result. Following this, a parametric study was conducted with this analytical model. The influence of coefficients, Young’s modulus of the rock bolt and the diameter of the rock bolt on the load transfer performance of rock bolts were studied. Furthermore, the load distribution along the fully grouted rock bolt was analytically studied. The results show that the axial load in the rock bolt decayed from the loaded end to the free end independent of the pull-out load. However, the trend of the load distribution curve was influenced by the pull-out load. This paper was beneficial to better understand the load transfer mechanism of fully grouted rock bolts.INTRODUCTIONRock bolts have been used in the mining industry for a long time. They are used as the reinforcement tendons to keep the stability of openings in underground mining and the slope in open-pit mining. Furthermore, rock bolts are commonly used not only in the mining engineering, but also in civil engineering (Thompson, Villaescusa, and Windsor, 2012).The rock bolt is a tendon which can be a rod or a cable inserted into a borehole drilled in rock masses or soils. Traditionally, the material of rock bolts was steel. However, engineering practices showed that the steel rock bolts can be easily corroded by the moist environment in underground mines. Next, Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) was used to manufacture rock bolts, which are termed as FRP rock bolts. Experimental results proved that the FRP rock bolts can effectively reinforce the surrounding rock masses without being corroded (Wang et al., 2018)."

Industrial minerals or non-metallic minerals are loosely used terms applied to a diverse assortment of materials which, in many cases, have nothing more in common other than the fact that they are neither metals nor fuel minerals. To help bring order to this otherwise random assortment of minerals, we have grouped these materials into two main categories; chemical and physical minerals, and nine sub-categories based on end-use applications as shown in Table 1. Chemical minerals are products which are principally used for the specific chemical elements they contain, whereas physical minerals are products which are used to meet specific performance specifications. The latter part of the 1970?s, in particular 1978, were considered peak years in terms of production and sales for many industries, By using 1978 as a base year, we can evaluate wherethese markets stand today after the recession of the early 1980's and the recovery which began several years ago. From this historical overview and appraisal of the current situation, various assumptions can be drawn as to which markets are expected to perform well into the 1990's.

Over the past decade, a substantial effort has been made to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of both underground and surface mobile mining equipment to reduce respirable dust exposures by the equipment operators. As part of this effort, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, (NIOSH) completed a comprehensive laboratory study that determined the significant factors for cab filtration and pressurization systems. From this information, a major underground mining equipment manufacturer designed a filtration and pressurization system that was incorporated into the enclosed cabs of its equipment. A long-term evaluation was performed on the effectiveness of this filtration and pressurization system to improve the air quality in the enclosed cabs of two different pieces of equipment, a face drill and a roof-bolter machine, at an underground limestone mine. This long-term evaluation demonstrated a significant reduction in dust levels between outside-to-inside cab respirable dust concentrations. During this evaluation, a modification to remove one of the filters on the roof-bolter machine simplified the design without sacrificing the system’s efficiency. Tests using particle count instruments performed during nonproduction time periods on both pieces of equipment indicated protection factors greater than 100 when comparing respirable-sized dust particles inside the enclosed cab relative to outside.

INTRODUCTION Mineral ore comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding - primary and secondary), natural or manufactured nonmetallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media - steel rods, steel or iron balls, or a combination of autogenous media and steel balls (SAG milling). This chapter covers rod and ball mills utilizing manufactured metallic grinding media. MILL DESIGN The interior surface of rod and ball mills exposed to pulp and/or grinding media are protected from wear and corrosion by rubber, metallic or a combination of rubber and metallic wear resistant materials. Rod and ball mills essentially draw constant power, thus are well suited for use of synchronous motors with power factor correction capabilities as drive motors. A net of approximately 120 to 130 percent of running torque is required to cascade the charge in these mills. The pull-in torque is about 130 to 140 percent with the pullout torque to keep the motor in-step (in-phase) generally in excess of 150 percent. When rod and ball mill are started across-the-line the starting and pull-in torques result in inrush currents exceeding 600 percent which possibly result in high voltage drops. To deliver 130 percent starting torque to the mill the motor design must take into account the maximum anticipated voltage drop. Motor torque decreases as the decimal fraction of the voltage available squared. E.g., a motor rated 160% starting torque with a 10% system voltage drop will deliver 160% x or 129.6% torque to its output shaft When it is not possible or practical to start a fully loaded synchronous motor across-the-line it is possible to utilize the motor's pull- out torque to start the mill. By using a clutch, normally an air clutch. between the motor and the mill, the motor is brought up to synchronous speed before the clutch is energized. If the motor has an adequate amount (175 or greater) of pull-out torque the pull-out torque starts the mill without major disruptions on the electrical system. Since the energy release at initial cascade of the mill charge is an inverse function of acceleration time, a minimum acceleration time of 6 to 10 seconds or more is recommended to prevent damage to the mill or the mill foundation. Economics at the time of plant design and mill purchase determine the drive to be used. The simpliest drive is the low speed synchronous motor with speeds in the range of 150 to 250 RPM connected to the mill pinionshaft by either an air clutch or flexible coupling. Using a speed reducer between the motor and pinionshaft permits using motors having speeds in the range of 600 to 1000 RPM. In this speed range, if power factor correction is not required induction motors can be used; squirrel cage where there is no restriction on inrush current; slip ring where a slow start and low inrush current is required. Air clutches can also be used to ease starting problems with squirrel cage motors. In some areas of the world induction motors and starters are less expensive than synchronous motors at a sacrifice of motor efficiency and power factor correction. Dual drives, that is two pinions driving one gear mounted on the mill, become economical for ball mills drawing more than 3500 to 4000 horsepower (2600 to 3000 kilowatts). Further developments of the low frequency, low speed synchronous motors with the rotor mounted on the mill shell or an extension of one of the mill trunnions could improve the cost picture for these "gearless drives", making them practical for large ball mills. The percent of critical speed, which is the speed at which the centrifugal force is sufficiently large to cause a small particle to ad- here to the shell liners for the full revolution of the mill is given in mill specifications.
