The Hallmark Distribution Center is one of the most sophisticated material handling and order filling facilities in the world. The 53 million cubic foot facility houses an ultra-modern, computer- monitored distribution complex that handles as many as 1/4 million orders per day. The Distribution Center replaces 16 leased buildings scattered through- out metropolitan Kansas City and, in addition, re-leased 4 floors in mid-town Kansas City needed for creative and administrative expansion. This new facility is the nerve center for distribution of Hallmark products in United States and Latin America. The size and gross numbers of all parts of the system is a significant accomplishment, but the purpose of this paper is to explain the technical advancements in the state-of-the-art of material handling and controls. The system iteself is made up of seven sub-systems including receiving, warehousing, picking rack stocking, towline, order filling, order sorting, and shipping. Significant techniques were used in each of these areas as well as technical advancements in the state-of-the- art. The most significant points are in 4 of the areas and are discussed in this paper.

This paper discusses some of the problems involved in predicting the productivity of a shovel and truck fleet in a new set of operating conditions. More specifically, it concentrates on the problems of predicting the travel times on the haul and return portions of the truck cycle under new profile conditions and the prediction of the interaction effect between the shovel and trucks at the loading point. The ability to calculate the travel times for a new road profile is not new. Additional corrections of these calculated times for expected actual operation can be made. In considering the interaction between the loader and the hauler, there are two approaches that can be taken. Probably the most accurate method of predicting the shovel-truck interaction is a simulation of the step-by-step operation considering the variation in cycle times of the shovel and trucks. This is usually called a stochastic simulation and requires input describing how these cycle times vary. However, by understanding the causes of this shovel-truck interaction it is possible to make sufficiently accurate predictions with much simpler methods. For the purpose of this discussion let us assume that the problem involves trying to predict the productivity of a single shovel-truck fleet at some future time in an existing operation. Let us also assume for simplification that the new operation to be simulated has the same loading and pit conditions and the same dumping conditions as did the existing operation. Therefore, the only difference would be the difference in the hauling profile for the new operation. The problem then becomes one of predicting the change in the travel times on the haul and return portions of the cycle, and in determining the change in interaction between the shovel and trucks with the new truck cycle times.

This paper is a review of technological progress in mining geophysics during the past decade. This has been the most significant period in the history of mining geophysics. Among the already existing; techniques, instruments for ground -magnetic and electromagnetic prospecting, were developed that are more, portable and faster to operate. Induced polarization equipment came into widespread use. Airborne instruments of various types became available and were used to survey large areas. Drillhole instruments were developed and have had some use, and it is to be hoped will be used to a greater extent in the future. Two revolutionary new methods, the AFMAG and INPUT, were developed. The wisdom of attempting to cover such a broad field in a single paper might be questioned. There is the inevitable problem that each topic must be discussed very briefly. However, while papers describing individual instruments have appeared, many have yet to be described in the technical literature. The evolution of the ground magnetometer and electromagnetic instruments has not been discussed. It is only recently that a review article has appeared on airborne EM. The existence of review literature on some topics has meant that they are given less emphasis in this review than those topics inadequately covered. It will also be observed that stress is laid on "chose instruments that are generally available to the mining industry rather than those developed by individual exploration companies for their own use.

At the beginning of the previous chapter, variation in the types of room-and-pillar stopes were briefly identified so that the reader could begin to understand the extensive application of this mining system. These same variations will be reviewed and elaborated upon in this chapter while discussing the methods by which the material is extracted. FULL-FACE SLICING BY DRILLING AND BLASTING When the entire mineralized thickness is taken in one pass of mining, it is known as full-face slicing. There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the back. Theoretically, there is no limit as to how high the face could be in a single pass. But there are practical limitations to equipment size, pillar stability, and control of local loose slabs on the face, roof, and pillars that dictate current practices. The range of face height of the 15 typical room- and-pillar mines covered in Table 8 (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) from the Dravo report, 1974 was 1.7 m (5.5 ft) to 9.8 m (32.1 ft), the average being 5.2 m (17.1 ft). In the Gaspe copper mine, Murduchville, Que., the drill jumbos were constructed with an extendable tower for full-face mining up to 15.2 m (49.9 ft) if necessary. However, a more common practice at that mine is to take the ore in multiple slices (Hall, 1959). In many metal mines the normal practice when starting stoping is to drive a single development drift into the ore zone a distance that will allow at least four or five rooms to be opened on each side of the initial drift. Since this opening will probably serve as the main haulage drift, it should be kept as straight and as level as possible. As to the other criteria for the stope developments, it might be well at this point for the mine planner to review the remarks presented earlier (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) on drifts, entries, and crosscuts for production. After the initial drift is driven, it should be slabbed to the full room width if it is not that wide already. Next, the future pillars should be marked on the ribs and the rooms driven between them. If the ore extends beyond the length of the initial drift and is to be mined in the normal sequence of mining, care should be taken in a random room-and-pillar system to see that the extension of the initial roadway remains straight. If pillar "spotting" is left to the shift foreman or to the miners, they probably will not realize the importance of maintaining a uniform pillar line next to the roadway, and of keeping the line straight. Invariably, a pillar will end up in the middle of the future drift extension resulting in a "dogleg" in a possible main haul- age road. While this error is not catastrophic, too much weaving in and out of pillars will certainly slow down future production haulage and needlessly increase costs. Face or Breast Drilling and Blasting Practices To drill and blast the initial advances into the rock, usually some form of cut pattern must be used. In room-and-pillar mining, when a pattern is drilled in a face and that face is the only exposed surface to which all of the rock must be broken, the pattern is known as a "face round" or "swing." The face to which the rock must be broken is referred to as a "free face." Thus the most common way to advance a room into virgin rock with only one free face is by drilling swings. If, after breaking around a pillar, taking down back, or taking up bottom, there is a second (or third) face exposed, a group of holes drilled nearly parallel to a free face and breaking to it is known as a "slab round" or "slabbing." In some mining districts it is also known as "slashing." Obviously, because two faces exposed offer less resistance to fragmentation than a single face, slabbing requires less drilling and fewer explosives than required to break the same tonnage with the same degree of fragmentation with swings. The industrial mineral filler plant of the Gouverneur Tale Company is equipped with a good dust collection system installed long before the recent popularization of environmental pollution. Credit for this fact is due to the foresight of Mr. R. S. McClellan, Project Manager and subsequent Vice President and General Manager of Gouverneur Talc, who recently retired as Vice President Engineering of the parent organization, the R. T. Vanderbilt Company. Also instrumental in the early stages of plant operation and the solution of start-up problems was J. A. Gustin who is now an engineering consultant located in Martinsville, Va. Credit is most certainly due to the late R. T. Vanderbilt, the company's founder, who favored and approved the investment in the necessary facilities that were far ahead of all competitors in the industry at that time.

The degree of injury and days lost from work due to an injury are examined for selected electrical sources, occurring in conjunction with falls of the injured miner or with selected machinery, that could have been eliminated by use of diesel equipment. Although the number of electrical source injuries that could have been prevented is small relative to the total number of injuries during the period examined, many lost-time injuries could have been precluded and thousands of days lost from work could have been avoided.

Over one half billion tons of coal per year is scalped, classified, deslimed, drained and rinsed, dewatered and final sized on rotary, vibrating, shaking or stationary screens. The vibrating screen is the industry work horse and performs the bulk of the screening functions in the coal preparation plant. There are two major types of brute force mechanical vibrating screens used in coal preparation plants: (1) the two-bearing one-shaft inclined screen and (2) the four-bearing two-shaft horizontal screen. Both of these types are familiar to coal producers.

In Part I of this paper we describe two techniques that were employed in the development of mathematical descriptions of the size reduction process which takes place in a ball mill. In Part II we show how the comminution model was imbedded in a process model to effect steady-state and dynamic simulation of a closed-circuit grinding operation. Increasing emphasis is being placed on development of approaches whereby the essential characteristics of a process can be succinctly represented in terms of a mathematical description of the relationships that exist among important process variables. This activity, commonly known as mathematical modeling, predates modern electronic computers: however, these computers with their tremendous computational capability have given new impetus to the whole field. Although the computer is quite helpful in the development of mathematical models, the real value to the engineer lies in the fact that computers represent such a powerful tool for simulating systems described by mathematical models. As a consequence, engineers may simulate and thereby study the behavior of complex. interacting, systems over a broad range of process variables and configurations once appropriate process models have been developed for the sequence of steps comprising the process.

Increasing exploration costs and the need to reduce the time-frame from exploration to production presently demand formalized procedures to assist exploration planning and reserve analysis. Exploration planning is basically required to select the most cost-effective drilling/sampling program, and to flag the needs for data of greater relevance and reliability. Reserve analysis is necessary to determine the sensitivity of grade-tonnage relations, and to clarify the economic implications of mining when alternative technical choices are to be considered.

An improvement in the present day screen sizing methods calls for knowledge on i) how material in the size range: 0.5 x 1.5 times the through-fall opening of the mesh on a deck, splits between the oversize and undersize streams of the deck, and ii) how near-mesh content of the feed affects the screening performance. In the throughput based sizing method given here, this is accomplished through the introduction of a generalized partition curve and a near-mesh factor. A newly developed efficiency factor is employed in addition to the traditional screen sizing factors.

A river delivers a given load of sand, and hence of heavy minerals, into the sea into which it empties. This load is fixed by drainage basin characteristics and processes. Wave energy available for redistributing that load is fixed in an entirely different way. An equilibrium diagram of these two parameters (load versus energy) permits a tentative prediction of what will happen to the heavy minerals. The Chattahoochee River delivers a load which, over the past few thousand years, appears to have been greater than the available coastal energy could handle. As a result, much of the sand has been accumulated in various delta-margin features: barrier islands, beach ridges, and large furrowed off-shore shoals. The bulk of the trapped sand is found today in the shoals, which are attractive deposits for possible exploitation. If coastal energy levels are high enough to move the total load delivered by the river, accumulations of sand (and hence of heavy minerals) should be sought in the down-drift direction. Energy levels are rarely constant over any great length of coast. Decreases in energy may be due to widening of the shelf, convexity of, the shore, restrictions on the fetch, wave decay, or other causes. Such decreases result In deposition. Hydrodynamic mapping of coastal areas, as outlined here, should prove useful in the location of additional reserves. Part of this type of work can be done on maps, charts, and air photos.

The refractory materials industry provides the largest commercial market for nonmetallurgical grade bauxite. Refractory grade bauxite is prepared from bauxites having low iron, titania, and alkali content by calcining at temperatures near 1,650° C. Although there are substantial bauxite reserves in the world, premium grade bauxite ores suitable for use in refractory applications are limited to only a few specific sources, primarily in Guyana and the People's Republic of China. Consumption of bauxite for refractory use is closely associated with the production and consumption of primary metals, in particular iron and steel. Barring major disruptions within the principal producer nations, sufficient supplies of refractory bauxite will be available to meet world demand well into the next century, and raw material costs will continue to determine the availability of markets for bauxite-based refractory products.

While the use of synthetic polymers for solid/liquid separation is not raw technology (1)(its history goes back to the mid 1950's), its importance has increased dramatically over the past decade. This can be attributed to two major factors. The first of these was a change to mechanized mining (strip mining and continuous underground miners) which resulted in a lower quality (higher reject) preparation plant feed, as well as a higher percentage of smaller size particles in the feed. The second factor has been the greater restrictions imposed by governmental agencies on effluent discharge and solids impoundment, requiring pre-treatment of recirculating water before reuse and treatment of refuse before disposal. Today, synthetic polymers find utility in almost all applications requiring separation of solids from aqueous suspension, including "in-process" as well as waste treatment applications. In spite of the fact that there are over several hundred commercially different flocculants available in the marketplace (2), there are a limited number of chemically different materials available which are useful from a cost/performance standpoint. The potential reasons for using flocculants in a coal preparation plant are summarized in TABLE 1.

Industrial minerals can have similar financing requirements to those needs of metaliferrous and coal mining projects. Although, one may see many similarities in the fundamentals of the various risks that must be evaluated in lending to any specific project, one of the outstanding differences is the understanding of the many different markets that these industrial minerals represent. There are in excess of 30 principal industrial minerals ranging in terms of annual production from the largest quantity such as sand and gravel, to possibly the smallest quantity of production of a legitimate industrial mineral which may be defined as industrial and rough gem diamond. If we assume that it is necessary to finance independent projects of ore bodies of industrial minerals for development, the financing techniques are similar to the fundamentals that we would use for financing coal projects or metaliferrous deposits. Therefore, let's begin by redefining project financing in the traditional banking or private sector area, and then in the later development of this paper, we will apply these techniques to industrial minerals in general and cite it with several specific examples.

The process of selecting a building site for a major structure is a complex procedure involving the consideration of a multitude of factors. The approximate geographic location for a structure is usually fixed by its intended function, though often there may be several site alternatives. Socio-economic, logistic, marketing and political factors are the primary site determinants. Also critical in site planning, however, are the environmental factors, both natural and man-made. These factors will influence the precise siting location within the limits allowed by the primary determinants and will dictate some of the basic design criteria. This paper discusses environmental factors, principally those which are natural conditions, that must be analyzed for five different groups of structures. The importance of thorough site environmental analysis based upon the principles of applied earth science is described. Significant elements to be considered in an appraisal of the geology, hydrology, seismology and meteorology are outlined.

In recent years, research in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) has had many important successes. Among the most significant of these has been the development of powerful new computer software known as the "expert systems". Expert system programs designed to provide expert-level consultative advice in mineral exploration (Duda et al, 1981), scientific (Feigenbaum, Buchanan and Lederburg, 1971) and medical (Shortliffe, 1976) problem solving are generally acknowledged to be among the forerunners of this research. As the decision makers virtually in all fields face a more complex and involved world within which to operate, the need for some decision support is also becoming urgent. Thus applications of expert systems continue to spread out reaching problems that, because of their dimensions or particular aspects, set more demand on the decision methodologies. To meet these new requirements, many activities which were performed in the past by the domain expert or engineer must become automated. Furthermore, previous research (Dawes and Corrigan, 1974; Dawes, 1979) has shown that automating an expert's decision rules often provide better decision than the expert does. For large systems it would be very useful (or even necessary) to have formal tools, allowing one for example, to automatically discover inconsistencies, contradictions or redundancies, or to identify the possibilities of wrong lines of reasoning in the decision process.

The definitions of system pressure loss (mine head) and system resistance, which are traditionally associated with single-fan net- works, are applied to multiple-fan ventilation networks. The system characteristics -- relations among air power, pressure loss, air quantity and resistance -- are analyzed by introducing the concept of subsystems. These subsystems are associated with the fans located in a cutset of the network. For a multiple-fan network, the resistances for the subsystems and total system are dependent on the quantity ratios of the subsystems. In general the pressure loss of a subsystem or a total system does not vary as the square of the corresponding air quantity. If the quantity ratios of subsystems are all held constant, then the resistances become constant and the pressure losses are predictable from the quantities employing the "square law." The system resistance has a minimum value under the natural- splitting flow pattern. Being independent of the value of system quantity, the minimum system resistance provides a basis for comparing the different networks.

The Republic of México is the world's largest producer of celestite/strontium carbonate and natural sodium sulfate. It is also a significant producer of flourspar, barite, graphite, sulfur, feldspar, salt and gypsum. New production may be brought on stream for borates, wollastonite, garnet, calcium carbonate and others. The country covers a geographic area of approximately 2 million square kilometers (760,000 square miles), and is divided into seven geological/geomorphological provinces. Less than 20 percent has been explored in detail for either nonmetallic or metallic minerals. This leaves large areas available for the discovery of world-class industrial mineral deposits. In addition to new deposits of those minerals currently being produced, there is exploration and development potential for borates, magnesite, rare earths, nepheline syenite, heavy mineral sands and numerous others.

Franklin Industrial Minerals operates several mines/quarries, including two room and pillar underground mines. Both of these mines are operated as multiple level room and pillar including heading and bench operations on one or both of the levels. This paper focuses on Franklin’s Crab Orchard, Tennessee mine, which produces both high purity chemical grade limestone and crushed stone for construction applications. The high purity chemical specifications for the chemical grade limestone and filler/extender applications are inconsistent with the non-chemical rock being produced to supply the crushed stone market. As a consequence Franklin has developed a unique mine plan and operation to maintain both product balance and a safe and stable working environment.
