Pea Ridge Iron Ore Co., previously Meramec Mining Co., a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp., mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge mine. The Pea Ridge property, now wholly owned by St. Joe, is located near Sullivan, MO, about 112 km (70 miles) southwest of St. Louis. The ore body was delineated in the mid-1950s by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drill¬ing in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the ore body was minable. Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Pro¬duction commenced in April 1964. The ore body is overlain by about 396 m (1300 ft) of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 792 m (2600 ft) long, and up to 182 m (600 ft) thick. It dips about 1.39 rad (80°) and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 45-m (150-ft) intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the ore body on 58-m (190-ft) centers. Banks of stopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modi¬fied shrinkage stoping method (Fig. 1). This was done by undercutting a 12 m (40 ft) wide by 45-m (150-ft) long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 1.5-m (5-ft) intervals. A 20-m (65-ft) sill was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fin¬gers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a "lattice" of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar re¬covery program was necessary (Fig. 2). INITIAL PILLAR RECOVERY PROGRAM The program was started in the upper western por¬tion of the ore body, furthest from the shafts. Due to the fact that the ore body narrows in the western extremity, the stope orientation was changed to mini¬mize required development. This left pillars 18 to 24 m (60 to 80 ft) wide and up to 79 m (260 ft) in length. The area selected for the start of the program had been developed between the uppermost level at 419 m (1375 ft) below surface and the 510-m (1675-ft) level. Due to the 91-m (300-ft) difference in depth, sublevels were driven on 15-m (50-ft) intervals and the ore was taken by rather classical sublevel stoping methods (Fig. 3). This left a structure with accesses compatible with drilling with 114-mm (41/2-in.) bore drifters mounted on columns. Most holes were drilled 63.5 mm (21h in.) diam and reamed to 100 or 127 mm (4 or 5 in.). Practical depth capability was about 21 m (70 ft) for holes above horizontal and 13 to 15 m (45 to 50 ft) for holes below horizontal. The interdependence of these long pillars necessitated that several of them be blasted simultaneously, making large blasts the only practical approach. Due to the required length of such loading cam¬paigns, it was necessary to select an explosive which could stand in the hole in an underground mine for a 4 to 6 week period. After some consideration a pump¬ able water gel was selected for both uphole and down¬hole loading. This afforded a high velocity, high density explosive which could be handled in large quantities. Loading the downholes was a fairly straightforward process. The holes were lined with an 8 mil polybutylene plastic sleeve and water gel was pumped into them with a double diaphragm pump mounted on the bottom of a stainless steel tub with a 81-kg (180-1b) capacity. INTRODUCTION In 1974 two of the present authors reported the results of a pilot study indicating an increase of lung cancer risk in Ontario uranium miners. (Muller, Wheeler, 1973, 1974) The study was based on data contained in a computerized Mining Master File maintained by the Ontario Workmen's Compensation Board that contained information on miners examined in Ontario who had either 60 months of dust exposure in mines or had signs of pneumoconiosis or tuberculosis. Including the above conditions the definition of uranium miners added the condition of one month or more of uranium mining experience in Ontario. This list of Ontario uranium miners contained 8,649 names. Following the results of this first pilot study, we embarked on creating a file of uranium miners containing information on men with one month or more of uranium mining experience in Ontario without any further conditions. This file was used by the Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines in their study of risk in Ontario uranium miners. (Hewitt 1976) This file contained 15,094 names. In this report we give an outline and progress report on a study of Ontario miners that we are conducting at present. It was felt that the male population of Ontario is not necessarily an adequate control population for uranium miners. A preliminary examination of the work history of uranium miners indicated that the majority of them (about 90 percent) had other mining experience in addition to their exposure in uranium mines. We therefore considered it useful to evaluate the possible effects of non-uranium mining on risk, and for this reason decided to make the Uranium Miners Study part of a study dealing with the mortality of Ontario miners in general. Aims of the Study The aims of the Study include the evaluation of: 1) the risk of dying by cause in non-uranium miners as compared to the male population of Ontario and Northern Ontario. 2) any differences that might exist in the death experience of non-uranium miners by cause according to ore mined. 3) the effect of length of exposure in non-uranium mines on age-specific risk by cause. 4) the dose-response function for primary cancer of the trachea, bronchus and lung from exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters. 5) the possible effect of the mining environment on deaths from causes other than cancer of the trachea, bronchus and lung. The study will address itself to a number of other factors that might well affect the dose-response function. These include: a) factors in the mine environment - other than radon daughters - that might affect lung cancer mortality. b) the effect of non-uranium mining on lung cancer risk in uranium miners. c) the effect of age as well as age at time of exposure on lung cancer risk. d) questions of latency and the possible dependence of latency on age at time of exposure. e) smoking as an important factor in lung cancer risk. f) Histological type of cancer in relation to the various parameters of exposure and age. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Study is making use of existing computerized data files and has set up certain new files. These include the Mining Master File and the Model Development File. The Mining Master File This file is a computerized record of data on individual miners obtained at yearly miners' examinations that have been carried out since the mid 1920's. The conditions for inclusion in the Mining Master File have been indicated above. Information contained in the file includes: (1) Identifying information: a) Surname and given names b) Date and place of birth c) Miners Certificate Number d) Social Insurance Number if available. (2) Updated Employment data obtained at each miner's examination: a) Year of first dust exposure in Ontario b) Year of first dust exposure outside Ontario c) Number of months worked in mining d) Ores mined e) Mining areas and mines f) Occupations

In this paper, we present a physiographic classification of gravel deposits, identify some field measures of aggregate quality, and describe sampling strategies for mapping aggregate quality in the Front Range Urban Corridor of Colorado. Gravel occurs in four types of deposits along the Front Range of Colorado: (1) piedmont alluvial fans, (2) high dissected terraces, (3) high (continuous) terraces, and (4) floodplains and low terraces. The four deposit types are the basis for definition of gravel-deposit models, which differ in geologic environment, deposit characteristics, deposit size, environmental impacts of mining, and post-mining use. Of the four types, floodplains and low-terrace deposits have been exploited most for gravel. High terraces also have been mined. Deposits of high dissected terraces and dissected alluvial fans have produced minor amounts of gravel, mostly for use as local fill. Studies to identify useful field measures of aggregate quality and to determine the appropriate scale for sampling were conducted on gravel deposits beneath the flood-plain and low terraces of the South Platte River north of Denver and the Cache la Poudre River between Ft. Collins and Greeley. Gravel deposits of the South Platte were selected for study because they represent the last major resource of gravel for aggregate in the Denver metropolitan area. The Cache la Poudre valley is the primary source of gravel aggregate for rapidly urbanizing areas around Ft. Collins and Greeley. Of all the field measures of gravel quality, the most important is particle size. Various parameters that measure particle size were investigated, but the easiest to determine, and the most useful to the aggregate industry, are measures of the proportion of coarse sizes. Particle size varies widely in gravels of the urban corridor. Gravel lithology, particularly the presence of deleterious particles such as reactive volcanic rocks and decomposed rocks, must be determined to assess aggregate quality. Studies of South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels have not revealed large proportions of deleterious lithologies. Studies of particle shape revealed only small numbers of physically weak shapes in both the South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels. Particle shape does not appear to vary from place to place in the gravels. Rounding, or the ab¬sence of angular corners, may play a role in the tendency of loose gravel to yield under load. South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels are rounded, and rounding tends to increase upstream. Before the quality of gravel in a valley can be assessed, the stratigraphy of the gravel must be known because it affects sample design. If only a single gravel layer is to be studied, only the thickness of the gravel must be known before sampling. If, however, more than one layer of gravel-distinguished by particle size, sorting, or lithology-is present, sampling must take into account the thickness and distribution of each layer. For example, three gravel layers of different particle size underlie the floodplain and low terraces of the South Platte. The tributary Cache la Poudre, on the other hand, contains gravel layers that can be distinguished only locally and vary slightly in particle size. Sampling experiments were conducted on gravel bars in the South Platte River and in gravel pits on the floodplain and low terraces of the South Platte and Cache la Poudre Rivers. Experimental results indicate that, even where sample error is large, regional and stratigraphic variation may be measured if it is large relative to sample error. Using vertical trench samples weighing an average of 40-90 pounds, down-stream decrease in coarse particle size was mapped for Cache la Poudre gravel, and differences among superposed gravel beds were measured for South Platte gravel.

"The acoustic emission/microseismic monitoring (AE/MS) technique has widely been used in the mining environment for the monitoring of rock mass stability. A successful implementation of the method is hinged on being able to accurately determine the P- or S-wave arrival which is then used in the determination of the source of an event. Determination of the arrival phase is usually performed visually by a human expert. However, the mining environment is characterized by high noise levels and different noise types of varying intensities. Therefore, performing manual phase picking on time series data acquired from the AE/MS monitoring system can sometimes be tedious and time consuming if not impossible. In this paper, a proposal for improving manual P-wave phase arrival picks is discussed. The method involves the filtering of the AE/MS data using a stationary discrete wavelet transform (SDWT) method. After filtering, appropriate scales/levels of the multi-level decomposition process are then selected for further processing. The first step in the picking process after filtering, requires the computation of the signal power and the root mean square (RMS) using the signal amplitudes at each scale. The preliminary P-phase arrival time is picked using the results of the calculated power and RMS values respectively. The calculated RMS values are then superimposed on the calculated power values to determine the final arrival picks. If the arrival time picks obtained by both methods coincide or are within 5 to 10 sample points, the pick is considered reliable. The accuracy of the method was verified using AE/MS data from two datasets obtained from two separate underground mines. The results of the study showed that the picking method is reliable and robust. Based on the data studied, it can be concluded that the method will help reduce the time usually spent in processing AE/MS data from mines. INTRODUCTION A successful identification and location of the source of acoustic emission/microseismic (AE/MS) events is mainly dependent on the onset time of the P-wave phase. In many seismic networks, initial picks are performed by picking algorithms followed by manual picks by human experts. If the waveform signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is low, the P-wave onset time picks by the human expert is generally reliable and accurate [1]. However, for waveforms with high SNR, picking of the P-wave onset could be a major challenge. Also, due to the volume of data acquired daily, manual processing could be stressful and time consuming [2]. These challenges continue to provide motivation for alternative means of providing reliable and efficient ways of improving manual phase picking. The AE/MS technique has been an intergral part of safety monitoring in mines [3] due to its capacity to identify zones of instability in a monitoring area. To obtain an accurate source of an AE/MS event however depends on the quality of the data used for P-wave phase picking [4, 5]. AE/MS data from mines are generally contaminated with excessive background noise generated by the different mining operations. The AE/MS signals of interest are mostly buried in background noise which makes it difficult to pick the P-wave phase arrivals [4]. Processing AE/MS data acquired in noisy environment remains a major challenge due to the weak nature of AE/MS signals [6]. As noted by [4] most of the data recorded in the mine environment are mainly due to events not related to AE/MS events of interest. The complexity of data in this type of environment makes the detection and picking of P-wave arrival by human experts a very difficult task."

GENERAL STATEMENT The primary objectives of any field data gath¬ering effort should be to (1) identify and gather the data necessary for the project and (2) obtain the data in a state-of-the-art manner. All too often the initial field data are collected both areally and tem¬porally in an illogical manner without the guidance of a conceptual model of the ground water flow systems involved or even a review of existing geo¬logic literature on the area of interest. The initial data collected frequently are of limited value while necessary basic reconnaissance information is miss¬ing. Initial field data should be collected with the intent of developing a hydrologic overview of the potential mine site and surrounding area. Ob¬viously, one of the initial objectives is to define the area requiring a hydrologic investigation. The data requirements should be identified by the time frame in which collection should be made and by the corresponding increase in sophistication of the data requirements with development and operation of the mine. The data requirements are summarized in Table 1. INITIAL LEVEL SITE INVESTIGATION Area Determination The initial task of any hydrogeologic investi¬gation is to determine the boundaries of the area requiring study. Obviously, the site of the proposed mine is included in the study area. The areal extent beyond the site may be determined from an eval¬uation of existing geologic and topographic maps. Those formations that overlie the ore body, the formations containing the ore body, and the formation(s) that lies immediately beneath the ore body are of direct concern for proper site recon¬naissance. Additional formations below the ore body may require study depending upon their thick¬ness, hydraulic conductivity, and degree of inter¬connection with the mine workings. This initial viewpoint identifies hydrostratigraphic units based strictly on geologic concepts such as mineralogy and structure. Formation outcrops, synclines, an¬ticlines, faults, and fracture and joint patterns are used to delineate the area of the site reconnaissance. The simplistic hydrogeologic environment (il¬lustrated in Fig. 3, chapter 2) requires that field data be collected via test wells and/or geophysical techniques. This approach is necessitated by the lack of surface features such as formation outcrops, streams, and springs. Fig. 5 (chapter 2) illustrates a slightly more complex hydrogeologic regime. The potential mine sites at locations A, B, C, D, and E each intercept a different ground water flow sys¬tem or combination of flow systems. Therefore, each mine location requires that a different area and size of area be investigated. A more complex geologic setting as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 (chapter 2) may be approached differently. The area included for the site recon¬naissance should encompass sufficient surrounding area to include the outcrops of those formations suspected of being influenced by the future mine. Even adjacent areas not suspected of being influ¬enced may be investigated if the formations of in¬terest crop out in those areas. Such an extension of the area of investigation would provide a greater regional understanding of the hydrogeologic properties of the formations (hydrostratigraphic units) of interest. Geologic Investigation The initial step before conducting the site re¬connaissance is to review all existing literature on the geology of the area. Existing information should be augmented with new exploration data on the dip, strike, thickness, and lateral extent of the for¬mations in the area. Exploration hole logs should be reviewed for indications of lost circulation, rub¬ble zones, and water producing zones. For achieving bulk economic excavation, large dump trucks are being used in majority of the earth moving operations resulting in high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) which exposes the operators to high levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). As the truck ages, hydro-pneumatic suspension struts loses their capability to effectively attenuate the vibration. A system is required to monitor and predict the performance of the suspension struts in real time. Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) has been applied for modeling and predicting the suspension system performance for lighter/smaller vehicles. However, no work has been done to implement machine learning or AI for modelling and predicting the performance of hydro-pneumatic struts in large dump trucks. Therefore, current work is going to be a pioneering effort towards developing machine learning and AI models for solving this problem. Support vector machine (SVM) and regularized dual non-linear regression has been implemented in order to achieve the goal. 3D virtual simulator for CAT793D was used to conduct experiments in MSC.ADMAS environment. The two main recorded outputs were the RMS accelerations in the vertical and horizontal directions at the operator seat for characterizing the performance of the suspension system. During the development and the training of the models, eighty percent (80%) of the total experimental data was used and the remaining 20% was used during the testing and validation of the developed models. SVM model showed the desired accuracy in terms of hydro-pneumatic suspension system performance prediction for large dump trucks. These models can be implemented in the dump truck controller which can then be used to monitor the performance of the suspension system in real-time, and with that proper maintenance and/or replacement can be scheduled by the maintenance personnel. Workplace safety, operator’s health and the overall system efficiency can be greatly improved with an implementation of such an intelligent system. INTRODUCTION Large capacity dump trucks are being employed in any earth moving operation throughout the world for achieving bulk economic excavation [1, 2]. A large dynamic impact force is produced with large capacity shovels dumping material weighing 100 tons or more in to the dump truck under gravity. This dynamic impact force generates high frequency shockwaves which travels throug0068 the truck body, chassis and reaches the operator’s cabin and thus exposes the operator to severe levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). Recommended safe limits have been listed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in sections 1, 2, 4 and 5 of ISO 2631 (1997, 2003, 2001 and 2004). An operator can got through a long term back, shoulders, arms and neck disability and disorders if exposed to the WBV levels beyond those limits. The dynamic impact force generated as a result of the high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) was modelled by Ali and Frimpong [2]. Furthermore, the complete methodology for optimizing the dumping process and reducing the impact force has been provided by Ali and Frimpong [1]. The vibration attenuation system present in the dump truck requires improvement in addition to the dumping process optimization. The vibration attenuation system in the dump truck commonly consists of hydro-pneumatic suspension struts. As the dump truck ages, its suspension system deteriorates and therefore loses its capability to effectively attenuate the shockwaves and the resulting vibrations produced by the dumping process. The deterioration tales place due to the contamination of the hydraulic oil or oil and nitrogen mixing or due to the gas accumulator diaphragm rupturing. The monitoring of the output vibration levels can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of any suspension system. In a dispersion of particles in liquid a net charge will develop at the particle-liquid interface. This surface charge is usually due to the adsorption of charged material from solution. The existence of this surface charge gives rise to the formation of the electric double layer of counter-ions which surrond the charged particle. The particle surface charge and the electrostatic repulsion which exists between similarly charged particles is the primary stabilization mechanism for lyophobic colloids (1). The separation of charge which occurs at the particle-liquid interface gives rise to several dynamic phenomena associated with colloidal systems or with solid-liquid interfaces in general. These phenomena are known as electrokinetic phenomena and the four classic electrokinetic phenomena are; electrophoresis, electroosmosis, streaming potential, and sedimentation or Dorn potential. The actual driving force for electrokinetic phenomena is not the surface charge per se, but the charge at the interface between the liquid which is hydrodynamically bound to the particle surface and the bulk fluid. This interface is known as the slipping plane or the plane of shear and the potential at this interface is the zeta potential (2). The factors linking the electrokinetic phenomena is that they involve a relative motion between the liquid and the charged particle or solid surface and the driving force is the zeta potential of the solid. In addition to the four classic electrokinetic phenomena there are two additional electrokinetic effects in disperse systems; the electro-acoustic effects. When an alternating electric field is applied to a cooloidal dispersion the particles will move in the field due to their net zeta potential. If there is a density difference between the particles and the fluid this motion will result in the development of an acoustic wave. The effect was discovered at Matec and has been termed the Electrokinetic Sonic Amplitude or ESA (3). ESA is the pressure amplitude generated by the colloid per unit applied electric field strength and has SI units of pascals per volt per meter. When an alternating pressure field (acoustic wave) is applied to a colloidal dispersion the inverse of the ESA effects occurs. A density difference between the disperse phase and the continuous phase leads to a relative motion between the particles and the surrounding liquid. This means that there will be a periodic displacement between the charged particle and the oppositely charged counter-ions in the electric double year. This displacement results in the development of an alternating dipole moment at the frequency of the applied field. This effect is termed the Ultrasonic Vibration Potential or UVP and was first predicted for electrolyte solutions by Debye in 1933 (4). UVP is measured in units of volts per unit velocity amplitude of the applied acoustic field or volts per meter per second. In 1938, Rutgers (5) and Hermans (6) pointed out that the effect would also be present in colloidal dispersions. A detailed theory for UVP effects in colloids, also called CVP, was first presented by Enderby in 1951 (7). Extensive studies of the UVP in electrolytes have been carried out by Yeager et al (8). Recently, O'Brien (9) has developed a general theoretical treatment of electro- acoustic effects in colloids and has derived a reciprocal relation linking ESA and CVP effects. The most commonly studied electrokinetic phenomena is electrophoresis. Electrophoresis is the movement of charges particles in an applied electric field. The velocity of the particle divided by the applied electric field strength is the electrophoretic mobility of the particle. The zeta potential can be calculated from this mobility (2). The magnitude of both the ESA and CVP effects are directly proportional to the electrophoretic mobility of the particles. The mobility determined by the two electro-acoustic effects is the dynamic or AC mobility of the particles.

INTRODUCTION The measurement of the total activity of radon daughters in the air of mines has become a routine procedure in order to control the radiation exposure in miners due to the inhalation of these radionuclides. Normally the measured concentration is given in terms of total potential L-energy of the short lived radon daughters. The unit most frequently used is 1 WL (working level), which is defined as the potential a-energy of 1.3.105 MeV per 1 of air. The a-dose to the respiratory tract is, however, not proportional to the inhaled potential a-energy. In addition, the degree of equilibrium between the daughter products in air and the fraction of daughter products not attached to aerosol particles (the unattached fraction) must be known. Theoretical calculations of the equilibrium between daughters and the unattached fraction have been presented by different authors (Jacobi, 1972; Porstendörfer et al, 1978). Such calculations must take into account the plateout of daughters on surfaces, the attachment of daughters to aerosols and removal of daughters by the ventilation. The situation in mines will however be very complex and no single model will cover all situations. In most cases the radon and radon daughter concentrations will be described by a combination of different models. Domanski (1979) used the experimental results of Breslin et al. (1969) from uranium mines to relate the equilibrium between the individual daughters to the equilibrium factor, F. Once the equilibrium factor is known, this seems to be a useful approach to assess the individual daughter concentrations. The concentrations of radon and daughter products may vary considerably during the day. Seasonal variations are also frequently found. It is therefore important to have knowledge of the magnitude of these variations and of the factors having the strongest influence upon the concentrations. The unattached fraction of radon daughters in uranium mines was investigated by George and Hinchliffe (1972) and Raghavayya and Jones (1974). Mercer (1975) later modified the results of Raghavayya and Jones. Both these investigations indicated that the aerosol particle concentrations was the main influencing factor upon the unattached fraction. In this paper we will summarize the main results of a study on the radiological characterics of nonuranium mines. We will also discuss the correlations between the unattached fraction of the potential a-energy and the unattached fraction of the individual daughters, and between the equilibrium factor F, and the individual daughter ratios. More detailed discussions of this study will be published elsewhere (Stranden and Berteig, 1981 and Stranden and Berteig 1981 a). MATERIAL AND METHODS During 4 two-weeks periods corresponding to the seasons in the Norwegian mine where the highest radon daughter concentrations occure, the parameters listed in table 1 were studied. RESULTS Correlation between equilibrium factor and individual daughter ratios. The mean value of the equilibrium factor in all Norwegian mines measured during the last ten years was 0.46 with a minimum of 0.08 and maximum of 0.93 (Stranden and Berteig, 1981). The correlations between the equilibrium factor F, and the individual radon daughter/radon ratios were studied and the results indicated high correlations. In table 2, these correlation formulae are listed together with the correlation coefficients. To find out if there are any potential savings in "in-the-wall haulage for open pits," the Swedish companies ASEA and Kiruna-Truck in 1984 gave us financial support to study this solution in more detail. In the study, the use of in-the-wall haulage was studied for three hypothetical open pits with different sizes and shapes. Annual ore production rates also varied. A part of this thorough study was published by the Swedish Mining Research Foundation (see Report F 8444, "The Use of Electric Trucks and In-the-Wall Haulage in Open-Pit Mining," in Swedish with an English Summary). Although in-the-wall haulage is of interest in some open pits, the local terrain is important for profitability. The authors do not think in-the-wall haulage is of any major interest for the mining industry. The following is a summary of some of the author's findings. To place the haul road in the wall is not of interest in open pits with declining metal contents in the bedrock. In such mines, the volumes from the haul roads will not yield revenues. The cost per m3 for an underground haul road is much higher than for a haul road in the pit. This means that it is only of interest to place the haul road in the wall when mining gets deeper than about 50 m (165 ft). In-the-wall haul roads will reduce flexibility in the pit, and it will make necessary the use of smaller equipment with lower productivity and higher costs per ton. As Hustrulid, et al. show (Table 4), excavation savings of material hauled are very low, $0.10 to $0.25/t (0.09 to 0.27 per st). The extra operating cost, due to lower productive equipment, will normally be much higher and thus destroy the whole idea with in-the-wall haulage. If electric trucks are profitable for in-the-wall haulage, it is normally also profitable to use electric trolley assist for trucks on the haul road in the pit. But the profitability of using electric power is different in different countries, and depends on the relation between the cost for electric power and diesel fuel. In the US, diesel fuel is inexpensive compared with electricity, but in a country like Sweden, diesel fuel is much more expensive. In most open pits, the trucks have to move a considerable distange from the loader until they reach a final haul road in the wall. A trolley line along such temporary haul roads will be exposed to flyrock. It is normally less expensive to perform rock support from the open pit than from underground ramps in the wall. In Fig. 8, Hustrulid et al. gives the impression that the underground haul roads will be very close to each other. This is seldom the case. Figure 1 shows a haul road in the wall. The haul road passes through each cross-section only once. Arranging a reliable dewatering and rock support system from only one underground ramp is probably impossible. Many more drifts are therefore necessary. In our report, we also studied what would happen if the final pit slope is increased by 5°, using underground drifts in the wall. Our conclusion was that, the extra cost for drifts, rock support, pumps, etc. destroys the whole idea, and that it was better to accept a higher stripping ratio with the haul road in the pit and to use conventional low-cost open pit equipment. Finally, we think it is would be difficult to try to reduce the safety factor when determining the slope angle by moving the haul road in the wall. Minimizing the risk for pit wall collapse is also important with in-the-wall haulage, primarily because men and equipment will be working in the pit, but also to guarantee many accesses between the pit and the haul road in the wall.

INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone. Each of the two in-pit benches are controlled with a data center equipped with Allen Bradley 5-40 processors. This

A number of small scale mining and milling operations were active in the Northern Territory, in South Australia and in Queensland in the late fifties and early sixties. However, in the late sixties there was an increase in exploration activities in the expectation of an upsurge in world demand for uranium Substantial new resources were delineated in the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. The most significant deposits were located in the Northern Territory, in what is called the Alligator Rivers Region located approximately 200 km east of Darwin. The Region is in the latitude of 13° South and thus lies within the Australian tropics (Figure 1). It consists of approximately 2.3 million hectares of natural wilderness containing much spectacular and attractive scenery. The area is noted for its abundant wildlife, particularly the waterbirds that gather on the flood-plains. Much of the vegetation is diverse and interesting. The Aboriginal population still maintains elements of the traditional way of life, and the spectacular Arnhem Land escarpment contains many of the best surviving examples of Aboriginal rock art. Numerous rich archaeological sites provide evidence of continuous human habitation for tens of thousands of years. Climatically, the Region is of the tropical monsoon type with a dry season from may to September and a "wet" from November to March. High intensity short period rainfall is characteristic, and the average annual precipitation is in the order of 1 350 mm. The monthly mean temperature ranges from 25° to 30°C throughout the year. The development of regulatory controls on uranium mining in the Alligator Rivers Region has been affected by the political status of the Northern Territory. While Australia is a federation, established as an independent self-governing country in 1901, it was not until 1978 that the Northern Territory became to any real extent self-governing. Prior to 1978, the Territory was administered through a special department of the Commonwealth (ie. the Federal Government). Under the Northern Territory (Self Government) Act 1978, administrative powers similar to those possessed by the Governments of the six founding Australian states were provided to the Territory Government. However, the Commonwealth government did not transfer to the Territory all such powers and functions, and in particular there has been, since 1978, a dual role for the Commonwealth and Territory Governments in the regulation of uranium development. Details of this role are provided later in this paper. RANGER URANIUM INQUIRY By 1973, major deposits had been discovered in the Alligator Rivers Region at Nabarlek, Ranger, Koongarra and Jabiluka. The estimated reserves and mine life expectancy of these deposits are given in Table I. Other radioactive anomalies have also been identified in the area but, as yet, they have not been delineated or evaluated. [ ] In 1974, an agreement was signed between the Commonwealth Government and Peko Mines Limited and the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australia Limited for the joint development of the Ranger deposit. In July 1975, the Government announced a Commission of Inquiry under the provisions of the Commonwealth Environment Protection (Impact of Proposals) Act 1974, into the proposed Ranger development. The inquiry was known as the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry or more commonly, the Fox Inquiry after the presiding Commissioner, Mr Justice Fox.

Introduction Millions of tons of coal are shipped by rail each year in the US. Loading those trains efficiently is a topic being studied by coal producers and railroads. Alternatives range from volumetric loadouts to systems that weigh the product, using either belt conveyor scales, track scales, or weighbins. Each system has its proper application and each has pros and cons, depending on the volume, nature, and layout of the specific loading facility. In recent years, a batch weighing system has been developed that offers significant benefits to higher volume operations shipping by a unit train. The Unitrain Loadout System (ULS) features a precision electronic batch weighing system married to a mechanical loadout system by a microprocessor-based digital control system. A batch weighing loadout could be designed using analog electronics or even a mechanical weighbin. But it is the adaption and use of a microprocessor that provides the primary benefits of a unit train loading facility. Those benefits are accurate weight determination, optimum car use, overload prevention, speed in loading, optimum labor use, and documentation of the loading process. Unitrain History The first ULS was erected for iron ore applications in Canada during the 1960s. The first domestic system on coal was installed at Pittsburg and Midway Coal Co.'s McKinley mine at Gallup, NM, in 1978. At present, there are more than 20 Unitrain Loadout Systems in operation worldwide. They are loading minerals, concentrates, and coal. Eleven systems are presently in service or under construction in the US. In the last several years, a number of comparable systems have also been installed. As a result, the concept has been well proven and is now commercially available from several sources. Unitrain Operation The basic operation of a ULS involves loading a unit train with individually weighed batches of coal while it moves slowly under a loadout tower. Typical coal systems are designed to load at rates of 2.7 to 6.3 kt/h (3000 to 7000 stph). The contents of each car can be accurately weighed. This meets the requirements of the National Bureau of Standards Handbook No. 44 for static weighing. Also, cars can be loaded within very close tolerances. This optimizes railcar usage and prevents overloads. Principal components of the loadout system are the main feed conveyor, the surge bin, surge bin gates, weighbin, weighbin gate, flood loading chute, control room, calibration weights, and hydraulic and electrical systems (Fig. 1). Main feed conveyor: Coal is delivered from a storage area by the main feed conveyor. The conveyor fills the surge bin. It should be capable of conveying coal at the same rate at which it is being loaded. Usually the feed conveyor is equipped with a conveyor scale that can display rate in the control room and control feed to the belt. The surge bin will typically store 227 to 272 t (250 to 300 st) of coal. If the loadout is installed in an over-the-track silo, there is no need for a surge bin. Four double-bladed, hydraulically actuated gates are incorporated into the bottom of the surge bin. These gates open to fill the weighbin. Automatic pre-act points are selected by the control system. They shut these gates as the desired weight is approached. The final amount of coal is added by a single gate that closes. This results in a weighed batch of coal within ± 0.5% of the selected optimum load per railcar. Thus, if loading 91-t (100-st) capacity cars, the system is set to batch up 90.2 t (99.5 st) batches. Each car is expected to be loaded between 90 and 91 t (99 and 100 st). Weighbin: The weighbin is next in the flow scheme. Typically, it is

INTRODUCTION Uranium mill tailings, by-products from the mining and milling of uranium oxide contain all decay products of uranium-238, uranium-235 and all the Th-232. The ore containing all daughter products of the parents U-238, U-235 and Th-232 is ground to approximately 50% under 200 mesh particle size and after extraction of uranium, the residue, described as tailings, is discharged into natural depressions confined by dams. These deposition sites are referred to as tailings ponds. Tailings ponds are located in two mining districts, Bancroft and Elliot Lake in the Province of Ontario, Canada. Some parts of tailings ponds are dry up to a depth of several meters, whereas other parts have a water table very close to the surface and still others are covered with water. The extent to which the daughters of uranium isotopes are in equilibrium with the parents U-238 and U-235 is dependent on the age of the deposit in which uranium occurs and the extent to which the decay products are removed by geochemical processes. In the mining district of Bancroft, the deposit is known to be approximately 1 billion years old, whereas in Elliot Lake, the deposit is considered to be approximately 2 billion years old. The ratio of radiogenic lead isotopes Pb-206 and Pb-207, can provide some estimates concerning the age of the deposits. If the tailings are not affected by geochemical processes, the tailings would contain all the daughters of the 4n+2 and 4n+3 series in equilibrium concentrations. The equilibrium activities of some members of the 4n+2 series are calculated in Table 1. [ ] The amount of radiogenic stable lead isotopes depends on the age of the ore deposits. If the deposit in each district is of the same age, a definite relationship is expected with respect to the activity of Pb-210 and the radiogenic stable isotopes. Approximately 33 million tons of the tailings have been deposited in the early 1960's, approximately 20 years ago. During this period of storage, the segregation of uranium daughters, like radium, the diffusion of gaseous product, Rn-222, and removal of precursors by geochemical processes, can cause dis-equilibrium. Earlier work concerned with the uptake of Ra-226 and Pb-210 by plants (Kalin and Sharma, 1981), indicated that the concentrations of Pb-210,in samples of the tailings taken, were lower than the expected equilibrium. The diffusion of radon from a variety of matrices has been studied (Tanner, 1964). It has been shown that the diffusion coefficient is dependent on the particle size in which its precursor is present, the moisture content and the surface conditions. The direct measurement of radon concentrations in the environment near the ponds is dependent on the metereological conditions. Kramer, Schroeder and Evans, 1964, have examined the variations in the concentration of radon near the ground level with respect to atmospheric variables, such as changes in barometric pressure, precipitation, wind velocities, thermal atmospheric instability. It is difficult to relate the total release of radon from the ponds to the atmosphere over an extended period. Our measurements of Pb-210 and total lead on tailings samples taken from 16 sites indicate that the ratios of the activity of Pb-210 to the mass of total lead can provide parameters which are helpful in the estimation of the total amount of radon and its decay products diffusing from the tailings ponds. In this paper, we present the results of measurements of activities of Ra-226, Pb-210 and total lead in samples from various ponds situated in both mining districts. The measurements were confined to samples taken at 0-25 cm depth from the surface.

INTRODUCTION The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing water and/or ash and/or pyrite has been receiving increasing attention since the 1960's by the world-wide coal industry. Historically, coal preparation practice has involved the use of primarily gravity based separation techniques, screening, and/or water washing in removing the larger fragments of inert material from coarse raw feed coal. The preparation, handling, and cleaning of raw coal finer than 500 micrometers was deliberately avoided. Most often the fine coal that was produced would be judiciously incorporated into the bulk of the larger sized cleaned coal product or simply discarded. Since the 1960's and accelerating in the 19701s, the desirability of performing some type of coal cleaning or upgrading on the finer raw coal feed materials has been increasing. There are several apparent industrial incentives for implementing fine coal ((500 urn) processing alternatives including the gradually increasing value of the normally lost fine coal product; the additional amounts of fine coal being produced due to changes in mining techniques; the need to appropriately dewater and upgrade fine coal streams in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations on water quality. storage of fines, etc.; the increasing need to lower undesired sulfur and ash contents in some coal end-use applications; and the increasing development of speciality coal use processes that require inherently finer and cleaner coal particles such as in gasification, liquefaction, fuel injection, etc. Looking at the over 70 years of mineral oriented fine particle separation successes at the industrial level, the use of froth flotation in fine coal would also seem to be a natural process to utilize at the industrial level. In the world of strictly mineral processing technology and, more importantly in the world of mineral commodity economics, there are clearly a number of advantages to using froth flotation that are well documented and universally accepted. These include: the relatively low capital and space requirements required when compared to other process options available to upgrade minerals; the extreme flexibility inherent to the froth flotation process both with regard to throughput and differences in raw feed characteristics; the general availability of a wide range of equipment sizes and reliable suppliers of equipment; and the general availability of appropriate and relatively cheap chemicals that are the major driving forces behind mineral flotation. Just how has the implementation of froth flotation fared in coal upgrading over the last 20 years? It is towards answering this question that this paper will be oriented. As such, the discussion will be somewhat philosophical. The comments offered are based on the personal experiences of this author who has worked in the basic side of inventing new flotation chemistry and flotation analysis techniques with the major overriding goal of implementing this new technology successfully at the industrial level in both coal and mineral flotation throughout much of the world. This paper is not intended to be a complete reference to all published scientific work on the subject of industrial froth flotation of coal. As a brief background to what will be expanded upon in this paper, the author would like to offer the following summary comments: 1) the industrial practice of fine coal froth flotation is qualitatively similar but quantitatively different than industrial mineral froth flotation when viewed from either research considerations, operating viewpoints or economic evaluation criteria; 2) it is clearly possible to invent and/or develop new technology (such as new chemistry and/or equipment) that can do statistically better than current plant practice in well-controlled tests in either coal or mineral flotation circuits; 3) there is so much inherent variability to the raw feed coal streams and other operating parameters that even if there is a documented technical incentive to implement some new piece of technology, the people, instrumentation and control methodology required are often simply not available or not economic unless the potential payoff is quite large.

For most geologists and miners the term asbestos refers to a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven; these fibers are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation and therefore are suitable for uses where incombustible, nonconductive or chemically resistant material is required. The US Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) specifically refers to the naturally occurring minerals chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos as asbestos if the individual crystal fragments have the following dimensions: length-greater than 5 µm; maximum diameter-less than 5 µm; and a length to diameter ratio of 3 or greater. Since asbestos has been identified as one of the ten most carcinogenic substances (a cancer-causing agent), it has become, for many government regulatory agencies, a major issue concerning banning emissions to the environment. Very few recent issues have caused as much concern for the crushed stone industry as asbestos. Complicating the problem is the fact that several federal and state bureaus have greatly compounded the confusion because each has become involved in the asbestos dilemma. Simple solutions to a very complex problem have been proposed by these various governmental groups. In addition to governmental bungling is the fact that public interest groups have been able to use federal and state laws that have been enacted with a strong environmental bias to foment even greater complexities. Such is now the state of the asbestos problem. No con- firmed health risk has been associated with low-level exposure, namely crushed stone in an unbound form; a methodology for sampling and analyzing for asbestos has not been developed; a precise definition of what is asbestos does not exist, nor does a concensus among the various government groups as to what course of action to pursue. Pure asbestos as it is mined for commercial purposes does not exist in the properties mined by the crushed stone industry. Where the six asbestiform minerals do appear (to date we've been referring mainly to chrysotile in serpentinite formations in Maryland) the amount of the asbestiform mineral present is generally quite small. They generally appear in scattered, miniscule amounts. In the case of Rockville Crushed Stone in Montgomery county, Mary- land, the chrysotile is less than 1/2 of 1% of the rock deposit. No health risk has been identified with such minute quantities of asbestos minerals. MSHA standards for the occupational health and safety of quarry workers are being met; and there is every indication that normal background levels of asbestos, throughout the surrounding countryside, are as high or higher than levels measured on roads where the rock is used in pavement or base. The problem and the controversy lie with improper terminology on the part of so-called public interest environmental groups, aided and abetted by some governmental agencies who, to be charitable, we can best describe as uninformed. The news media frequently has fanned the issue, unintentionally we'd like to think, by quoting these misinformed authorities and not bothering to question the facts or adequately report balancing information handed to them. It is much better copy to talk about an asbestos cancer scare, than to deal with rather mundane measurements and descriptions that are hard to understand. At the heart of the issue is the improper use of the word asbestos. Instead of being confined to the geological description of the six asbestiform minerals-chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos-the word asbestos is also wrongly used, but too-frequently to identify many other minerals that happen to have elon-

Although there was a significant improvement in the world economy, recovery in the iron and steel industry followed its traditional pattern and lagged the general economic recovery in 1983. World crude steel production increased from 645 Mt (711 million st) in 1982 to 664 Mt (732 million st) in 1983, an increase of less than 3%. Domestic iron and steel production showed a modest increase over 1982. Weekly raw steel pro¬duction levels ranged between 1.5 and 1.75 Mt (1.6 and 1.9 million st) for the last 10 months of 1983, compared with less than 1.25 Mt (1.4 million st) for the last half of 1982. The peak was 2.5 Mt (2.7 million per st) per week in 1978-79. This how level of steel operations kept most pelletizing and sintering operations at curtailed production levels. Extended shut-downs of pellet plants were also common. Pressure by management to reduce operating costs has continued with an increasing emphasis on maintaining quality and efficient unit productivity. With the extended decline, there have been significant personnel reductions in both operating and headquarters staffs. Many companies are anticipating a long-term how growth period in the iron and steel sector. Pelletizing Domestic pellet production showed a slight increase last year to about 34 Mt (38 million st), less than 50% of total capacity. What is indicative of the inevitable is the announced intention to chose down facilities, such as US Steel Corp.'s Atlantic City ore operations pellet plant at Lander, WY, and the recent aborted move by US Steel to purchase National Steel with the apparent intent to chose the National pellet plant in Keewatin, MN. There is excess domestic pellet capacity that will not be needed. The question is what form attrition will take. South American pellets can be brought into the Chicago area at a cost competitive with Great Lakes plants. This raises the possibility that imported pellets can, in fact, displace domestic pellets at almost any US steel plant. The need to re duce total production costs at domestic pelletizing plants is crucial. Efforts to reduce fuel costs for pelletizing have focused on re placing natural gas or fuel oil with coal. More recently, petroleum coke has become available at an attractive cost, but systems must cope with its higher sulfur con tent, which limits its potential The direct firing of grate-kiln systems with pulverized coal hay been fully proven. The use of solic fuel in the straight-grate process however, is still being developer and no straight-grate system i running on solid fuel alone. The further development o coal-water slurry systems may provide a suitable fuel for both systems. It would appear, how ever, that the same ash quality restriction would hold for coal water systems as for direct-firin systems. So, the choice is based of the relative cost and convenience of a wet-grinding system with additives, compared with a dry-grind direct-fired unit. The high-temperature (two stage) heat recuperation system installed at US Steel's Minnta plant (Step III) has provided the fuel savings anticipated, any modification of additional in durating lines is planned. Other operators are hooking at similar heat recuperation improvement. Another area of potential cost savings has been in the reduction of bentonite requirements. A CCI's Tihden plant, major improvements have been made in this area. Progressive bentonit reductions were achieved over several years from the 8- to 9-kg (16- to 18-lb per st) range to the 5-k (12-1b) level by progressive moisture reductions and chose attention to operating practice. Two major events highlight recent developments in US ore and coal ports: completion of the last series of modern taconite pellet transshipment facilities on the Great Lakes; and modernization and construction of coal ports, particularly on the East and Gulf Coasts. The New Taconite Transportation System To reduce raw material transportation costs, a fleet of new generation high-capacity 304-m (1,000-ft) self-unloading vessels were built to carry iron ore pellets from the Minnesota-Michigan iron ranges to the steel plants on the lower Great Lakes. Existing port facilities had to be modernized, revised, or completely rebuilt to accommodate these large vessels. Some of these were Burlington Northern's Allouez, WI, loading dock; Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co.'s Two Harbors, MN, facility; Republic Steel's Lorain, OH, facility; and Chessie's Toledo, OH, dock. Allouez and Two Harbors receive taconite pellets from unit trains and load them onto large vessels either after dumping or via a large stockpile and reclaim system. The Lorain facility receives iron ore pellets from self-unloading vessels' discharge boom conveyor and reloads the pellets into rail cars or small vessels destined to inland steel mills. The Toledo facility receives Armco pellets from vessels, stockpiles them through the winter, and reloads into unit trains destined for Armco's mills along Chessie's rail tracks. Burlington Northern's $75-million Allouez pellet dock, completed in June 1977, was built to receive pellets produced by Hibbing Taconite Co. and National Pellet Plant in Minnesota, stockpile them through the winter when the lakes are frozen, and load them into 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels in the shipping season. As much as 10 Mt (11 million st) of pellets may be stockpiled within the loop track. A 6-km (4-mile) long conveyor system connects the stockpile area and the dock. Thirty-six new concrete silos were built on the dock to house 2 kt (2,000 st) each of pellets before shiploading. The $35.5-million expansion of the Two Harbors transshipment facilities began shiploading in July 1978 after ground breaking in Aug. 1974. Particularly noteworthy is the first application of the Orboom system-a breakthrough in technology for the modernization of the century-old pocket docks on the Great Lakes to accommodate the new generation of super vessels. The pocket-type loading dock has been a standard on the lakes for nearly a hundred years. Bottom-dump rail cars fill the ore pockets on top of a finger pier. Gravity chutes matching standardized ore ship hatch spacings are lowered to fill the holds of a 20.3-kt (20,000-dwt) ship. The construction is simple and the loading swift. In spite of advances in technology elsewhere, most of these docks continue to serve the iron ore and coal trade in the same manner they did in the 19th century. Although performance of the pocket docks on small vessels remains outstanding, the new 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels are beyond the reach of the old docks. After extensive development, the Orboom system (Patent No. 4,065,002) for pocket docks was successfully developed. The heart of the Orboom system is the retractable shuttle loading arm which loads the wide beam vessels. The Orboom shuttles are fed by existing pockets of the dock that, in turn, are charged by a tripper conveyor along the length of the dock. The Two Harbors shiploading system is supported by a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) storage-reclaim network. Unit trains are bottom dumped. Introduction As the US and world population increases, so does the problem of supplying expanding energy needs. Early requirements worldwide were mostly met by abundant forest vegetation. Man's large scale use of minerals-energy resources is a fairly recent development. It occurred only during the past 200 years. Coal was the first mineral fuel to be used extensively. It was not a large factor in US energy production until the beginning of the 19th century. Petroleum and natural gas use is about 125-years-old. Electricity generation by falling water is about a century old. Atomic energy is only about 30-years-old. Extensive use of it is still in the future. Solar energy is in its infancy. Other energy sources such as wind, peat, and geothermal energy are minor and primarily of local importance. There were three main features of the fuel supply picture during the past 125 years. By 1900 coal replaced wood as the principal energy source. Since 1900, oil and gas have captured many coal markets. And after the mid-1970s, there was a resurgence of coal usage. (Figs. 1 and 2). Wood Until the advent of mineral fuels for energy, the major global energy source was wood. But populations increased and became centered in towns and cities. The problem of a sufficient energy supply first developed as nearby, easily obtained wood was exhausted. This problem became more acute as industries such as shipbuilding, smelting, and pottery making, became more widespread. Results of wood use as an energy source and building material are starkly evident in areas of the world where civilization is oldest. Entire forests were consumed and have never been replaced. In the US, wood supplied 90% of all fuel requirements until about 1850; and more than 50% until after 1880. By 1900, wood still supplied 20% of all energy uses. In the mid-1970s, energy costs increased, due largely to the oil embargo. This increase resulted in an increased wood demand for domestic heating. While large quantities of wood were being used, its share of the total energy market was still less than 3%. By 1983, wood was becoming increasingly scarce and more costly near most large US cities. Wind Wind powered ocean vessels for many centuries. Sailing ships were still common in 1900. Windmills provided an early, cheap energy source and continue to be used today on farms. Design and development of windmills for electricity generation is being conducted. Interest in wind power is growing worldwide where availability of wind currents warrants the investment. Also, US regulation requires power companies to "buy back" electricity generated by windpower in excess of that used by the windmill owner. Coal By the 1600s, England was producing, 900 kt/a (1 million stpy) of coal for heating and other uses. The first coal-fired blast furnace for iron smelting was developed in 1621. Coke-making was developed in 1755, and Watt invented the steam engine in 1769. Illuminating gas made from coal was introduced in London in 1800. During this same 200-year period, France and Germany developed coal production, but on a smaller scale than England. US, bituminous coal was mined near Richmond, VA, as early as 1748. Major bituminous coal-producing states in the early period were Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, and Maryland. West Virginia replaced Virginia as a major producer, when that state was formed in 1863. As the US expanded west, new coal deposits were found and exploited. Indiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Washington, Colorado, Wyoming, Arkansas, Oklahoma (Indian Territory), Montana, New Mexico, and Texas had significant coal mining operations by 1900. Today the eight major coal producing states are Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, Wyoming, and Montana. These states accounted for about 80% of all coal (lignite, bituminous, and anthracite) produced in the US during the past several years.

Introduction Today, more than 50% of rail-carried commodities are mineral industry related, with coal being the most important single commodity moved by rail. In 1980, coal accounted for more than 5.7 million of the total 22.6 million carloads moved by rail. Metallic ores were third behind grain, with more than 1.4 million carloads. Crushed stone, gravel, sand, and other non-metallic minerals totaled almost 2.3 million carloads. Chemicals and allied products, including fertilizer and coke, added another 1.7 million cars, with petroleum and petroleum products totaling 300,000 carloads. Coal Several things happened in the 1970s that gave rise to increased consumption of coal-particularly western coal-and to its dominant position among rail-carried commodities. First, the Clean Air Act of 1970 required generating plants to make significant reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions. To comply, utilities could either invest in scrubbers or switch to low-sulfur western coal. Many opted for the latter. By 1972, increasing demands by the utility companies halted what had been a 25-year decline in national coal consumption. Second, the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973 put an end to cheap oil and gas, limiting their future as fuels for electric generating purposes and increasing the potential for coal. Third, in 1977, President Carter announced an energy program with coal as its cornerstone, calling for an annual two-thirds increase in national coal production by 1985. He also called for conversion to coal by utilities and large industrial users. Finally, he proposed a 10-year, $10 billion program to encourage domestic coal production and stimulate development of export markets. Coal bounded into world prominence. Foreign demand for steam and metallurgical coal increased tremendously, while US demand for western coal also shot up. This meant greater demands on the transportation sectors that traditionally carried coal to market. Many railroads began programs to serve the coal industry. One example is Burlington Northern's commitment to handle increased western coal tonnages. The company spent more than $1 billion in recent years to develop a system capable of moving more than 91 Mt (100 million st) of coal each year. Other leaders in this renewal were Norfolk and Western, Union Pacific, Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific railways. The importance of the rapid growth of coal traffic to the railroads is shown in the accompanying table, which gives percentages of total tonnages hauled and revenues attributed to coal. With coal providing the railroad industry with a substantial share of its revenues, there is keen competition among the rail companies themselves and among railroads and other transportation sectors for coal haulage. But there is also cooperation when more than one railroad is involved in delivering the coal from mine to market or when a combination of transportation modes is more economical. The latter is represented by Conrail's interest in working with the port authorities of New York and New Jersey to establish a new coal port that would serve not only export markets, but also utilities and industries in the northeast. Iron Ore Next to coal, iron ore (taconite) is the most important single mineral commodity handled by railroads. In Minnesota, where most iron ore is produced, rail transportation is primarily by Burlington Northern and the Duluth, Missabe, & Iron Range Railway Co. (DM&IR). The DM&IR, owned by US Steel, serves several producers on the Mesabi Iron Range. Two of the larger producers, Erie Mining Co. and Reserve Mining Co., also own railroads that operate between the mines and the ports of Silver Bay and Taconite Harbor on Lake Superior. Several iron mines and taconite plants in Michigan are served by the Chicago and Northwestern, and the Soo Line. Total 1981 shipments of taconite and iron ore are estimated at 55.9 Mt (55 million It), compared with about 61 Mt (60 million It) in 1979 the most ever shipped in one year.
