The proposed technology of antimony calcine processing includes ferrochloride leaching of calcine, reducing solutions, hydrolysis of hydrochloride solutions with antimony oxochloride isolation, synthesis of antimony trioxide by SbOCl neutralization and its drying, regeneration of hydrolysis solutions. The optimum parameters of separate stage of process has been determined and the chemical character of process has been given. During the leaching of calcine we succeeded to transfer 92.16- 95.66% antimony to solution. On the worked out sheme we attained recovery of antimony to antimony trioxide near 90 .5% Antimony triozide contains 99.5% Sb2O3. The composition of sinter burdens for pigments preparation "Naples Yellow" different colours from brightly-yellow, yellow and lightly yellow has been proposed. Three-sulfuretted antimony-antimonic cinnabar have been prepared by precipitation of antimony solutions by potassium sulfur-bearing solution. The prepared compounds correspond to inorganic pigments for artistic paint. The amorphous antimony-ferrous black we prepared by aluminium cementation of hydrochloric antimony solutions. The ferrous black were used as artistic paints and for coating of metals by antimony.

In this paper the effect of the ratio of grinding and grindable size classes (ore lumps, particles and grains) and the guantity of intermediate size classes in the feed of the primary wet autogenous grinding "Cascade" mill is studied and the features of the influence of these factors on the mill capacity are shown. On the basis of the experimental data from Lebedinsky mineral processing plant, where magnetite guartzites are processed, a coefficient of the "total ratio of size classes" in the feed of 9x3 m "Cascade" mill was estimated. It helps to get an evaluation of the effect of ore size classes ratio in mill media on the mill capacity and to work out some ways for its optimization in closed or semiclosed technological circuites of primary autogenous grinding. The operation of the specific energy effects for some intermediate size classes, removed from the mill as circulating load, is proposed to improve its efficiency before regrinding in "Cascade" mill and decrease negative influence of such classes accumulation in the mill media.

Conversion of coal into high-value gases via gasification offers significant pollution reduction and efficiency improvement benefits associated with controlled combustion of clean gases for power generation. However, current gasification-based electricity production technologies, such as IGCC do not address carbon dioxide emissions. The focus of the study is CO2 capture on CaO prior to combustion of coal-derived gases. To overcome kinetic and stability limitations associated with its utilization, CaO is distributed on high-surface area -Al2O3 and supported on a ceramic honey-comb monolith. The proposed method allows for efficient capture of CO2 from a gas mixture, as studied in a flow-through reactor system. This novel method of CO2 capture is used here to argue for pre-combustion capture of CO2 in coal gasification-based power plants. When CaO is present during the steam reforming of coal gasification gases, continuous withdrawal of CO2 from the system provides for higher yields of reforming products (hydrogen gas) by influencing the thermodynamic equilibrium of the entire system.

The Little Boulder Creek molybdenum deposit is in central Idaho, in the White Cloud Range about 3.2 km (2 miles) northeast of Castle Peak, the highest peak in the range. The elevation of the deposit is about 2591 m (8500 ft). The deposit is accessible only by helicopter or by a 12.9-km (8-mile) trail from the county road along the East Fork of the Salmon River. The nearest towns are Clayton [25.7 km (16 miles) northeast], Stanley [33.8 km (21 miles) northwest], and Ketchum [45 km (28 miles) south-southeast]. The principal known deposit at Little Boulder Creek is called the "North Zone." In this zone, the molybdenite occurs both in stock- work veinlets and disseminated through metamorphosed quartzite of Pennsylvanian age. Pyrite is ubiquitous, averaging perhaps 0.05%. Scheelite and/or powellite are present in trace amounts. An intrusive quartz monzonite stock, probably of Cretaceous age, bounds the deposit on the west. A steep fault which drops Tertiary age Challis volcanics into contact with the mineralization limits the deposit on the east.

The effect of cooling rate on the flotation behaviour of copper slags of flash smelter plant in Samsun was investigated. Fresh molten slag was solidified in laboratory scale in three different ways. All the samples were characterized by chemical and mineralogical analyses. The chemical analyses showed that samples prepared from fresh slag had 0.9 to 1 % Cu with 40 % Fe and 30 to 32 % SO2. Old pit slag samples contained between 1 to 3% copper. Microphotographs showed that rapidly cooled slags showed fine size distributions, e.g. the copper grains in granulated slag had sizes in 1-2 microns. On the other hand, the size of copper grains in slowly cooled slags increased above 40 microns. Flotation tests carried out by using potassium amyl xanthate and Flotanol-C showed that slowly cooled slag reduced the copper losses in the tailing and improved the grade of concentrate. Under the light of laboratory investigation, the pit dimensions of Samsun Plant have been modified which resulted in a pronounced improvement of the grade and recovery of concentrate produced at Samsun slag flotation circuit.

General History The first jaw crusher in the US was patented about 1830, but the Blake crusher that has maintained a substantial advantage over other types was invented in 1858 by Eli Whitney Blake. For going on 150 years the jaw crusher has been an invaluable machine; even today, when gyratory crushers have assumed most of the burden of crushing large tonnages of large rock and ore, the jaw crusher has a firm place in the mining industry. It is interesting that soon after the invention of the Philetius Gates gyratory crusher in 1881, a contest between the first No. 2 Gates and Blake jaw crushers of equal gape showed the gyratory to be 3.2 times as fast. This foretold a day not far in the future when the jaw crusher would not be adequate on the largest jobs. In his Textbook of Ore Dressing (1909) R. H. Richards recom¬mended that the word breaker be used for all machines breaking to relatively large sizes (say to 5 in. or greater), and crusher be used for finer work. Even in the 1968 US Bureau of Mines dictionary of mining terms the work breaker is defined by Richards in this context. However, in modern US usage it is nearly limited to coal breaking. Over the years the jaw crusher has been developed in a variety of forms but it appears today in these three general forms: (I) Blake type, (2) Dodge type, and (3) single toggle (or overhead eccentric) type. All of these crushers have a fixed jaw and a moving jaw, between which the coarse rock fragments are intermittently caught and crushed. The three types are differentiated by the manner in which the movable jaw is moved in relation to the fixed. Types The Blake-type crusher is shown in cross section in Fig. 1. The simplicity and strength that have made it first among jaw crushers are evident. The movable jaw is suspended from a cross-shaft at its upper end, this shaft being carried in bearings on the sides of the frame. The actuating mechanism consists of an eccentric shaft, also supported in frame-mounted bearings, which imparts through a pit¬ man and a pair of toggles a reciprocating motion to the bottom of the swing jaw, the return movement being effected by several spring¬loaded rods. The whole is built into a box frame with the crushing chamber at one end. As in all jaw crushers, the eccentric shaft is equipped with a heavy flywheel that maintains an even speed through¬out each stroke. The Dodge-type crusher illustrated in Fig. 2 is simple, mechani¬cally. Its movable jaw, being pivoted below the discharge opening, has minimum movement at crusher discharge and maximum at crusher feed. Because the choke point coincides with the point of least motion, these crushers are of relatively low capacity, and the rapid action in the feed area gives the machine the advantages of large reduction ratio and closely sized product. Thus, it fits well into low-capacity operations like sample reduction. Besides low capacity, its principal disadvantages are tendency to pack and make fines. The single-toggle or overhead-eccentric type of jaw crusher (see Fig. 3) has gained in usage, starting as a modification of the Dodge idea in that the greatest movement of the movable jaw occurs at the top, and being gradually improved and strengthened to its position today where it covers just as wide a field of application as the Blake type from the standpoint of feed opening. The motion of the movable jaw is the result of the circular motion of the eccentric shaft at the top of the swing jaw combined with the rocking action imparted to the bottom by the inclined toggle plate. Because of light weight and mechanical simplicity, it is economical in small mills and portable plants where the rock is not as tough and abrasive as to punish the machine with excessive impact from shocks, or excessive wear result¬ing from the pronounced vertical component of motion.

INTRODUCTION The components of the radiological hazard in uranium mines are: 1. exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters 2. exposure to long-lived ore dust 3. external irradiation With usual ventilation rates, the dosimetry relative to the first component only requires to know each miner&apos;s exposure to a potential energy of short-lived radon daughters, (EXP[a]). Presently in France, (EXP [a]) is determined monthly from radon concentration measurements. This is an indirect method based on ambient monitoring. After technical improvements achieved during the last years it is now possible to measure (EXP [a] directly with an individual portable monitor developed by the CEA. The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare monitoring results obtained by these methods. DETERMINATION OF INDIVIDUAL MONTHLY EXPOSURES TO[ a] POTENTIAL ENERGY OF SHORT-LIVED RADON DAUGHTERS [(EXP a) amb, by ambient monitoring] In this case, it is necessary to know individual monthly exposures to radon, (EXP Rn). As mentioned by Pradel, J.,et al., 1976, (EXP Rn) is estimated for each worker from informations both on radon concentrations (CRn) measured as described by Pradel, J., 1962 and times (t) elapsed in the various workplaces. (EXP Rn) is obtained by summing up the elementary radon exposures CRn x t relative to all the workplaces where the miner was successively engaged during the month. (EXP Rn) values are then corrected by an average equilibrium factor of 0.17 deduced from many measurements and taken as representative for all the French mines. Finally: [ ] (EXP [a])ind are obtained directly with an individual portable instrument described by Chapuis, A.M., et al., 1972. Samples of the air breathed by the miners are pumped continuously and radioactive aerosols containing the short-lived radon daughters are trapped on a filter. The principle of the measurement lies on track-etch detection of the a particles emitted by the deposited material. The technical aspects have been described by Duport, P., et al., 1980a, Mouden, A., et al., 1980 and Chapuis, A.M., 1980. As mentioned by Duport, P., et al., 1980, fiability is good. Indications on measurement reproducibility are given by Pradel, J., et al., 1977. PRESENTATION OF THE STUDY The underground miner population of a French mine was followed during a period of 8 months (October 1978 - May 1979). Monthly exposure values for each miner determined either by ambient or individual monitoring, (EXP [a])amb or (EXP[ a])ind, had been previously collected by Le Gac, J., 1980, who had also defined miner categories according to the characteristics of the work performed. Four groups are considered here, the "whole mine" and three categories as described in table 1. Data on the individual monthly exposures,(EXP [a])ind and (EXP [a])amb, were taken again to analyze the individual cumulative exposures instead of the "month by month" values. The influence of the mean habits of each individual on its surveillance results is thus taken into account. Each miner has a cumulative exposure as an individual of the "whole mine" and as an individual of each category in which he has worked. The results obtained by ambient or individual monitoring were analyzed (characteristics and adjustements of the distributions) and then compared (description of the discrepancies observed). Obviously, such a study is possible only if all the exposures are cumulated on a same duration. As miners have not worked during the same number of months in the course of the data collecting period, one must considerer the individual average monthly exposures, [(EXP a)]amb and[ (EXP a)]ind, instead of the individual cumulative exposures, which is typically the same thing. To be sure that the exposure values of a given group (A, B, C or D) are representative, only those miners really present for at least 3 months in this group were taken into account. Finally, each individual of the "whole mine" and of the various work categories has a pair of average monthly exposure values : [(EXP a)amb] determined by ambient monitoring and[ (EXP a)ind] deduced from the track-etch recording of the individual portable monitor. This article describes research conducted by the University of Alabama&apos;s Mineral Resources Institute on removing sulfur from coal using a combination of gravity concentration and flotation methods. The research used the gravity and centrifugal force capabilities of Humphrey&apos;s spiral to remove part of the pyritic sulfur and ash. Flotation of the Humphrey&apos;s spiral coal concentrate removed additional sulfur and ash. In addition to obtaining good recoveries of high quality coal, the tests demonstrated that pyrite in the wastes could be isolated as enriched flotation products by the combined gravity-flotation approach. Domestic coal production in 1980 reached a record 757 Mt (835 million st). Forecasts are that coal production and use will approach 907 Mt (1 billion st) by 1985, with much of the increased production being used for electrical generation. Of current production, it is estimated that about 454 Mt (500 million st) of coal nationwide are subjected to some degree of cleaning, ranging from crushing and screening to gravity concentration and flotation. With expanded coal production and more rigid controls placed on coal combustion, it is reasonable to assume that the tonnage subjected to some form of preparation will increase, with time, thereby adding to the burden of coal rejects being generated. A major problem associated with increased coal use for electricity generation is the need for utilities to conform to emerging federal air quality standards for sulfur oxide emissions from power plants. To a lesser extent, other industrial operations burning coal face a similar situation. Controlling sulfur oxide emissions by using low-sulfur coal or resorting to stack gas desulfurization are two recognized approaches, but removing sulfur from the coal, if possible, by physical beneficiation before combustion is preferred because of its simplicity and lower cost. Reducing the inorganic sulfur in coal to tolerable limits by physical beneficiation, including flotation, as now practiced, is still relatively inefficient and has not kept pace with the more sophisticated physical beneficiation approaches generally employed by the nonfuel minerals industry. As one phase of a broad program conducted by the Mineral Resources Institute at the University of Alabama on sampling and evaluating impounded fine size waste coal, tests were made using samples from two impoundments to determine the quality of coal recoverable by a combination of Humphrey&apos;s spiral concentration and flotation. Particular attention was given to organic and inorganic sulfur deportment and distribution in the various products. Another objective was to determine if pyrite in the waste could be recovered for possible marketing. The use of Humphrey&apos;s spirals to concentrate fine coal was practiced as early as 1947. At that time, the Hudson Coal Co. used spirals to concentrate anthracite fines. In 1950, spirals were used to treat fine-size bituminous coal and later, in 1976, spirals were reportedly used for removing pyrite from fine-size coal. More recent investigations have discussed the use of Humphrey&apos;s spirals for treating fine-size waste coal in Alabama. Samples Description Washer waste samples were obtained from two impoundments. One sample was representative of waste generated during washing steam coal from the American, Pratt, and Nickel plate seams in Alabama. The other sample represented metallurgical coal washer waste from processing coal from the Carter, Johnson, and Milldale seams. Partial samples analyses are shown in Table 1, and screen analyses of the samples are given in Tables 2 and 3. Screen ana¬lyses showed that one sample contained about 4% of material coarser than 2 mm (10 mesh) and the other contained about 13% of plus 2 mm (10 mesh) material. Also, the analyses indicated that ash and sulfur increased as the material&apos;s particle size decreased. Experimental Laboratory Tests Sink and float tests using a heavy liquid (1.4 specific gravity) were made on the different screen sizes shown in Tables 2 and 3 to determine the effectiveness of gravity concentration for separating coal from pyrite and other gangue constituents. Tests indicated that gravity separation, under optimum conditions, could be expected to yield coal products containing 10-12% ash, and 0.2-0.3% pyritic sulfur. Gallium (Ga) and Germanium (Ge) are essential strategic elements that are extensively used as semiconductors in many technological fields. Owing to their essential uses and supply disruption, Ga and Ge are deemed critical by the U.S. They are typically found as substitutions or inclusions in zinc minerals. However, their distributions within zinc minerals are not well understood. To address this, trace element and mineralogy analyses of representative samples obtained from an old high-zinc-grade tailing were performed using various qualitative and quantitative techniques. These techniques included Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Tescan Integrated Mineralogical Analysis (TIMA) with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Moreover, bench-scale froth flotation tests were conducted to enrich zinc minerals, the major hosts of Ga and Ge, using PAX as a collector, Na2S as a sulfidizer, Pb(NO3)2 as an activator, and MIBC as a frother. Comprehensive characterization analyses of the flotation products showed significant enrichment of Zn, Ga and Ge in the flotation concentrates.

Design of chain pillars in a longwall mine setting is one of the main engineering controls on the global and local stability of the mine. Challenges with roof instabilities, floor heaves, and pillar failures can be alleviated, to some extent, by careful design of gateroad configurations and chain pillars. This work investigates three different alternative designs in a three-entry-system gateroad configuration with an inter-panel barrier in a longwall mine in Virginia. Starting with the current design, which has faced challenges such as excessive floor heave, a geomechanical model developed in 3DEC software is validated by monitoring in-situ pillar stress in the yield, abutment, and barrier pillars in the mine. Next, three different chain pillar designs are evaluated in the model with a focus on roof sagging, floor heave, and pillar average stress. Results show the relationships among the alternative designs and instabilities associated with roof, pillar, and floor in the study mine, providing insights for optimizing longwall mining designs in deep-cover settings.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this article is to outline the data requirements for selecting a proper underground mining method and to discuss the general steps taken in selecting that method. Determining the appropriate mining method is an iterative process that continues throughout the life of a mineral deposit. We will discuss the subject from the standpoint of a feasibility study, where a realistic assessment is necessary in order to determine investment merit. The feasibility stage of a project is that point where the drilling program has defined sufficient geologic reserves to consider mining the deposit but little or no underground development has been done. Primary parameters for consideration in choosing a mining method are 1) geometry of the deposit; 2) distribution of grade; 3) rock mass strength for the deposit, as well as the hanging wall and footwall; 4) mining cost and capitalization requirements; 5) mining rate; 6) type and availability of labor; 7) environmental considerations; and 8) other site-specific conditions. Of these parameters, the first four have the most impact on determining the general mining method to be employed.

The Buckskin Mountains Tunnel is a key link in the Bureau of Reclamation&apos;s Central Arizona Project. The 22-foot (6.7-m) diameter tunnel is being bored in a north-northwesterly direction through volcanic rock near Lake Havasu in western Arizona. The 6.9-mile (11-km) conveyance tunnel will carry up to 3,000 cfs (85 cu m per sec) of water through the Buckskin Mountains as part of the Granite Reef Aqueduct. The water for the project will be drawn from Lake Havasu behind Parker Dam on the Colorado River and pumped some 800 feet (244 m) above the lake to the inlet portal of the free flow tunnel where it begins its 190-mile (300-km) journey to Phoenix, Arizona, and beyond into Orme Reservoir (figure 1). Precast concrete segments are being used as a single system initial support and final lining in the tunnel being excavated by a tunnel boring machine specially designed and built for the job by The Robbins Company. J. F. Shea Company, Inc., of Walnut, California, is constructing the tunnel for the Bureau of Reclamation.

Consistent increase has been the mark of North American potassium (K) consumption. In 23 of the last 25 years there was upward progress The pace of usage has quickened in the past three or four years This, together with a predicted accelerated future demand, has created unprecedented interest -and activity in the potash industry. Potassium enjoyed a ninefold increase in consumption from 1940 to the present time in North America (Figure 1). Since 1950, it increased from just over a million tons of potash (K20) annually to nearly three million tons in 1964. World-wide usage exclusive of mainland China is now about 10 million metric tons. Some predictions call for another doubling in consumption in the next 10 to 15 years, About 20 percent of the four million tons of K20 produced in North America is now exported overseas and this percentage is likely to increase in the years ahead. Ten years ago, exports represented only 3-1/2 percent of total K2O production from this continent.

INTRODUCTION The application of oil field technology to large diameter hole drilling is beginning to offer a cost effective alternative to conventional shaft sinking methods. The drilling of ventilation and small production shafts are, of course, not new. The major constraint to the drilling of large diameter production shafts has been the inability to drill holes large enough and straight enough to install and operate relatively high volume hoisting equipment. This paper discusses recent advancements in drilling technology as applied specifically to large diameter holes for use in the mining industry. The paper emphasizes the geotechnical and hydrologic considerations in assessing site conditions and their application to drilled shaft technology. The authors worked together on a recent feasibility study for a 6 m (20 ft.) diameter 975 m (3,200 ft.) drilled shaft in New Mexico. Their individual experience in drilling and geotechnical investigations related to shaft sinking is world wide. The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves an area of approximately 860 square miles and collects and processes used water from the city of Chicago and 116 surrounding communities. As a public agency, the MSDGC -Serves a population equivalent to 10 million people which is composed of 5.5 million people and an industrial wasteload equivalent to an additional 4-1/2 million people. -Provides 400 miles of intercepting sewers and tunnels ranging in diameter from 12 inches to 24 feet. -Operates 71 miles of navigable waterways and channels conncecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes with the Gulf of Mexico and 6,000 miles of inland waterways. -Maintains the largest water reclamation plant in the world. -Processes 1,380,000,000 of used water daily and removes approximately 1,000 dry tons of organic solids each day. -Has spent approximately 700 million dollars in capital improvements to date, and will require expenditures in excess of 3 billion dollars (including over one-half billion dollars in tunnels) to meet existing federal and state water quality standards.

I. INTRODUCTION The Atlanta Research Chamber is an UMTA-sponsored applied research facility studying tunnel design, excavation and support systems. It is located directly below Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. It is included in the CN-120 contract to build the Peachtree Center subway station, a part of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) multi-billion dollar "Phase A" 53-mile transit project, which is 80 percent funded by UMTA with 20 percent provided by local authorities in Atlanta and Fulton and DeKalb counties (Figure 1). The Research Chamber is located immediately south of the main Peachtree Center Station cavern, and is in part an enlargement of the pre-existing Pilot Tunnel excavated to provide bidders on the CN-120 contract a view of the rock conditions (Figure 2). The Research Chamber lies some 3 meters above, and is approximately parallel to, the twin Running Tunnels. The Research Chamber is 18 meters long and has the same 5.5 meter diameter horseshoe shape design dimensions as the twin Running Tunnels.

The next ten to fifteen years will be exciting ones for the construction industry because three city agencies alone have started or will start, on tremendous expansion programs, the cost of which will exceed a total of four billion dollars. The major portion of this work will be done by the use of tunnelling methods. *Tunnelling is construction by any method of a covered cavity of predesigned geometry whose final location and use under the surface, whose cross-sectional area is greater than two sq. meters. The New York City Transit Authority&apos;s expansion program will provide for approximately 52 miles of new subways. The Board of Water Supply has already started on City Tunnel No. 3 which, when completed will provide the City with enough water until the year 2000, and the Board of Water Resources has embarked on a tremendous program to clean up the surrounding waters. Yes, these will be exciting years, particularly when one reads about the new novel exotic methods of rock breaking and disintegration, coupled with the new methods of soft ground tunnelling.

A computerized heuristic model for an efficient and economic design of belt haulage networks in underground coal mines is discussed. The model is versatile, easy to use, and is valid for all mining methods singly or in combination. It may be used to design new networks or to analyze existing networks. The input data required are 1. maximum production rates from a section, 2. probabilities of production rates, 3. equipment costs, and 4. data necessary for network coding to represent different cases. The objective function is the "expected minimum cost per ton of coal hauled" while meeting production requirements. The output includes belt width, motor horsepower, bin size etc. and also values of operating parameters for each belt such as belt speed, effective tension, power consumption etc. A detailed account of the cost involved is also provided for each unit as well as for the entire network. Description of the model and an example of the design of a belt network in a mine with two longwall and four development sections are presented.

All Sanitary District contract documents for new tunnel construction permit the Contractor a choice of four (4) separate alternate tunnel sections. This is the result of a continuing District policy to encourage at all times the use of the most suitable construction techniques and to attract to District construction the broadest spectrum of proven capabilities. Figure 1 indicates the alternate tunnel sections allowed on District contracts as follows: 1. A horse shoe section, ribbed and lagged, and a poured reinforced concrete tunnel liner; 2. Circular section, ribbed and lagged, and a poured in place reinforced concrete tunnel liner; 3. Circular section, ribbed and lagged, and a precast reinforced concrete pipe liner grouted in place; and 4. Circular section, no temporary lining, and a precast reinforced concrete pipe liner to be jacked in place. The Sanitary District now has in operation 10,500&apos; of 5&apos;6" I.D. and 6,500&apos; of 5&apos;0" I.D. jacked tunnel. An additional 5,600&apos; of 7&apos;6" I.D. jacked tunnel is currently under construction.
