Atlas Dewatering was contracted to install and maintain a groundwater control system for the new Bessarion Subway Station and the Tail Track Structure on the Toronto Transit Commission’s new Sheppard Subway Line. Atlas met the challenges presented by the project by closely reviewing the contract documentation provided by the Program Geotechnical Consultant, Golder Associates and by working with the general contractors, Bondfield Construction Company and PCL Constructors Eastern, inc., throughout the duration of both projects. In addition to concerns about soil loss, excessive settlement and seepage, the consultant was concerned about spreading hydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater between the two aquifers present at the Bessarion Station site. By installing a system of multi-level vacuum eductor wells around the perimeter of the excavation, Atlas was not only able to provide a dry excavation for construction, but, due to a unique well design was also able to prevent cross-contamination of the aquifers.

Increased emphasis has been placed on recycling consumer and industrial waste products. This trend has created a new industry that is focused on recovery/ separation of byproducts from waste material. As a result, interest has increased in the development of separation systems designed for the recycling industry. Much work has been done in this area. However, existing techniques developed for minerals beneficiation are often ignored. An example of is the foundry industry. There are currently more than 3,000 foundries in operation throughout the United States. Each consumes between 9 and 900 t/d (10 and 1,000 stpd) of sand for mold production. Either silica, chromite or zircon is, used in various combinations with chemical or clay binders. After casting, the sands are typically discarded into a landfill. This practice has become an environmental concern, especially the disposal of chromite and zircon. Silica sand is not environmentally sensitive. But it is used in greater abundance (6 to 7 Mt/a or 6.6 to 7.7 million stpy)and thus has prohibitive haulage and landfill costs. Current technology for sand reclamation involves thermal treatment to remove residual binders followed by dry mechanical attritioning (Leidel, 1993; Klein, 1994). This approach results in high losses due to fines generation and high costs associated with thermal treatment. As a result, this approach has shown only limited success. Stringent regulations are also affecting the disposal of secondary materials, such as plastics and metals. This is particularly true for the ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal industry. It plays a major role in industrial recycling of steel, aluminum and copper. Applications such as wire recycling present challenging problems since a hazardous byproduct (plastic insulation) is generated by the recycling.

Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

Asbestos is a generic name given to six fibrous minerals that have been used widely in commercial products. The six types of asbestos are chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos (Table 1). Chrysotile is the asbestiform variety of serpentine. Crocidolite, amosite, antho-phyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos are the asbestiform analogues of riebeckite, cummingtonite-grunerite, anthophyllite, tremolite, and actinolite, respectively. Although amosite is an acronym for the Asbestos Mines of South Africa (AMOSITE) and does not specify a mineral type, it generally is composed of cummingtonite-grunerite asbestos so the terms are assumed to be synonymous.

The study of soft soil (wastes above the rock bed) an issue of great importance in civil engineering, is usually addressed by drilling boreholes. This method is rather expensive and time-consuming and although the information obtained is usually accurate, on the other hand it is much localized. Recently published researches have demonstrated the ability of the combination of geophysical exploration methods to estimate the thickness of deposited wastes, which provides the layered structure of the study area and certain, method depended, mechanical parameters as well. By theory, the frequency of resonance of an upper layer is a function of its thickness and the average shear velocity in it. Furthermore, the application of H/V spectral ratios of micro-tremors is a fast, straight forward and cost effective methodology, yielding the determination of the main resonant frequency of the soil. Based on this framework, 20 microtremor measurements have been carried out in a Landfill in Heraklion-Crete. Some of these measurements were deliberately close to drilled sites, where the basement had been reached. Three electrical resistivity tomographies were also used, in order to define the landfill structure such as, thickness, determination of different wastes distribution in the study area and other parameters. In addition, estimation of predictive Vs using empirical relationship between shear velocity and penetration resistance (SPT?s) were also conducted. Knowing the thickness and the resonant frequency, we estimated the shear (Vs) velocity of the waste cover. The final Vs model was confirmed using the results from the Vs-SPT correlation. The combinative implementation of the above mentioned geophysical and geotechnical methods have successfully defined geometrical and geotechnical/geophysical characteristics of the area under investigation in a fast and cost effective way.

"Why geophysics? We will have to drill anyway." Reliance on geophysical methods for detailed target appraisals will increase as direct surface evidence becomes more subtle. This will create a need for more effective and efficient geo- physical programs. Numerous computer-based techniques that deal with a broad range of geophysical problems are described in the literature. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a framework for the systematic application of these techniques to effect an overall optimization of the geophysical appraisal. The concepts described are not technique specific, but should serve as a guide for increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of any geophysical program. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flow chart of the major aspects of the program described. The three main subdivisions of a 'geophysical program are discussed: (1) survey design, (2) data processing, and (3) data interpretation. Detailed flow charts, outlining the goals, the requirements for meeting the goals, and the steps followed within each subdivision are presented at the beginning of each section. The objectives and type problems of each subdivision are defined, followed by a description of applicable computer methods. . References are cited that give a general cross section of computer techniques available in the literature, and examples are given in each subdivision to demonstrate basic concepts and the use. of computers in solving the type problems.

Indicator simulation allows specification of different continuity of high and low values through the use of grade thresholds. The sequential implementation of indicator simulation has been widely used, but the problem of order relation deviations remains a significant drawback. A new procedure for "Hierarchical Indicator Simulation" is introduced that avoids order relations and offers greater flexibility than the conventional sequential approach. The new implementation simulates all locations at the largest threshold and then considers decreasing thresholds in turn. All nodes with grades that are above the previous threshold are excluded from the domain of the current threshold and therefore, they are not used as conditioning data. The probability of being above or below the threshold is calculated using simple indicator kriging using all conditioning data in the domain, thus the covariance structure is preserved. The theoretical framework of this new approach is fully developed. Practical implementation details are discussed. Application to a copper deposit shows the advantages and drawbacks of the method. Finally, the possibility of incorporating multiple-point statistics is discussed.

Current extensions of the European railway network require long TBM drives in the diameter range of 10 m under critical and varying rock conditions. In view of that and in particular for a 7 km long high-speed railway tunnel in Spain to be started in mid-2003 a new design for a hard rock Double Shield TBM has been developed by SELI (Italy) and Jäger (Austria) in collaboration with Mitsubishi (Japan)and Robbins (USA). Due to the new design and operational features that new type of TBM has been named Universal Double Shield TBM with a further extended area of application. Special attention has been given to outstanding torque and thrust capacities combined with the shortest possible length of an innovative shield arrangement, different advance modes in various ground conditions and further developed exploration and treatment facilities.

The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently expanding capacity by extending their Metro system from South of the city to the North East end of the island. The scope of Contract 704 involved excavating a long reach of tunnel which had a complex rock/soil interface comprised of fresh granite overlaid by clayey sand. Two 6.5 m diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM’s were used to bore the tunnels. These machines were designed so that both hard and soft rock could be excavated. The cutter head was equipped with a combination of both rippers and disk cutters. Soil conditioning was achieved by delivering foam through a multiple port injection system. This very irregular profile of the interfaces posed many challenges to the equipment and the people.

Personnel from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health integrated the results of studies from a seismic tomographic survey, a finite-difference analysis, laboratory measurements of compression wave (ultrasonic) velocities in rock cores, and site geology to evaluate the use of seismic tomography for identifying induced pressures in an underground pillar at the Edgar Mine, Idaho Springs, CO. The key findings were that (1) the seismic tomograms showed that seismic velocities in rock adjacent to mine openings were low, (2) a difference tomogram in which in situ stresses on the east and west sides of the slot were compared showed that velocities increased west of the slot but decreased east of the slot, (3) geologic features (rock types and a fault) identified through geologic mapping were recognizable in the seismic tomograms, (4) ultrasonic velocity measurements on the rock cores agreed with seismic velocity measurements in the tomograms, and (5) results from a finite-difference analysis compared well to the seismic tomograms west of the slot but not east of the slot. The significance of this research is that seismic tomography is a useful tool for determining relative stress in underground pillars.

It is generally agreed that C.C. White was the first to describe and market coal mine roof trusses beginning as early as 1967. White was issued a patent in 1969 1. Coal mine roof trusses were extensively used in the 1970’s, and their use has proven valuable in many difficult conditions. Beginning in the mid 1990’s, several types of bar/cable trusses have been introduced. A new and innovative bar/cable truss recently introduced offers several advantages. By eliminating many small parts, and simplifying the installation, these new trusses are much easier and faster to install, thereby increasing operator safety.

Mining law is essentially a branch of the law of real property. It concerns acquisition of property for extracting contained minerals, and the rights, privileges and duties that fall upon the holder thereof once the rights are acquired Accordingly, this section focuses on the procedures to be followed in acquiring state. federal and private lands, and defines briefly the nature of the rights obtained. The mining laws of Canada and Mexico are summarized, and the related subjects of minerals taxation and governmental regulation are discussed briefly. This section is not intended to be the basis for legal decisions. Rather, its purpose is to provide the engineer with an understanding of basic principles and procedures. For a detailed treatise of mining law, reference can be made to The American Law o] Mining, a five-volume set edited by the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation. The law changes constantly, especially that based on federal and state statutes, and the reader is cautioned to be alert for subsequent modifications of statutes, regulations and case law. 2.1-PRELIMINARY LAND-STATUS CHECK Often, after completion of area reconnaissance, or perhaps after receipt of a submittal, a specific more localized target area will become of interest. Usually, an intensive exploration program comprising detailed surface mapping, sampling, geophysical prospecting and drilling will be required before the mineral potential of the ground can be properly evaluated. Before an investment of this magnitude is made, however, it is advisable to obtain rights to mine ore from the property. Otherwise, knowledge of the exploration activity might greatly inflate land values, or speculators or competing mining concerns might step in. Hence, as a general rule, a land-acquisition program should be undertaken before an intensive exploration project is begun. The first step in such a program is to make a land-status check to determine whether the subject lands are available and, if so, from whom they can be obtained and by what means. 2.1.1-BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT RECORDS In those states which contain large areas of federal land, basically (he western states, the primary informational source is the records of the Bureau of Land Management. These may t)e examined at the land office having jurisdiction over federal lands in the area of interest. The records for Montana and North and South Dakota are kept at the Billings (Mont ) land office; Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas, Cliejenne, Wyo.; New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, Santa Fe, N M ; northern Alaska, Fairbanks, and southern, Anchorage; Utah, Salt Lake City; Nevada, Reno; Arizona, Phoenix; Colorado, Denver. There are two land offices in California, at Sacramento and Los Angeles Records for other states are kept in Washington, D C. at the office of the Director, Bureau of Land Management.

Salt, because of its plasticity, exerts a major influence in deformation. Resulting salt structures are common world-wide. A special type, salt domes, are associated with thick sequences of sediments deposited over salt. Their upward intrusion is generally thought to be in response to buoyancy. Mines in salt domes reveal an internal pattern compatible with large amounts of vertical flowage. Caprock, the end product of accumulation of anhydrite from salt dissolution, attests to long continued upward growth and concomitant truncation by moving underground waters. Concepts of modes of growth are evaluated and related to problems in utilization.

Geological differences among various coalfields restrain the applicability of subsidence prediction using existing European methods. To modify these methods for domestic conditions, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, developed a method of assessment to evaluate the lithological effects on subsidence in the Northern Appalachian basin by examining data collected from 16 longwall panels in the coalfield. The assessment is partially completed, and the results to date show that the ratio of maximum subsidence to the extraction thickness, known as the subsidence factor, can be expressed in terms of the width-to-depth ratio by a simple exponential equation which has a coefficient tentatively considered as the subsidence index. This index varies with the lithology of a particular site and can be expressed in terms of the percent distribution of weak and strong rocks in the overburden.

Sustainable development is a principle for the way we should act in the present. It ensures also options for the future to achieve a balance between social, economic and ecology development. The efficiency of raw material utilisation is being enhanced through technological developments, starting from extraction through all the following stages of the value creation chain. The use of domestically produced resources helps to assure the technological know-how. Additional indicators being collected and published by individual companies are questionable in countries with a tightly regulated legal framework such as in Germany, but make sense in developing and threshold countries. Sustainability in terms of efficient use of raw materials will manifest itself at the next stages of the value creation chain. Examples for efficiency improvement can be found in the steel, the power generation and agriculture industries. The approval procedures for German mining operations entail an internationally extremely strict assessment of the potential impact on the environment. All the mining activities include remediation and recultivation where the practise in Germany has become model character by international levels.

This chapter contains the edited transcript of the "Gold Heap Leach Information Exchange" session that was held at the 1990 SME/AIME Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. The exchange occurred on the afternoon of February 27, 1990. The session was intended to act as a forum for discussing some of the more prominent operating problems associated with heap leaching precious metals. The information exchange was very successful. The exchange consisted of several panelists introducing and discussing different topics, follow by a comment and question period. This transcript contains the panelists' presentations as well as comments and questions from the floor and the panel. Extraneous comments and remarks have been edited out. On Nov. 4, 1981 A/S Sydvaranger's 1-kt/h (1,100-stph) wet-process, iron ore ball mill completed its first four months of uninterrupted, full-load operation in Kirkenes, Norway. This 6.5-m-diam (21-ft-diam) mill is driven by a gearless ring or wraparound 8.1-MW (10,860-hp) motor at 13.1 rpm-a first of a kind in this segment of industry. This article examines reasons for selecting this type of drive over more conventional schemes, lists specific advantages of such large mills, and describes the installation in Norway. History For almost a decade, good operating experiences have been gained with 28 gearless ring motor drives in the cement industry, driving 2.5 to 4-m-diam (8.2 to 13-ft-diam) tube mills with drive powers ranging from about 3-4 MW (4,000 - 8,000 hp). Why then did the mineral ore processing industry hesitate until 1980 to adopt this successful concept for similar applications on ball, semiautogenous, and autogenous mills? There are a number of good reasons in the eyes of conservative mill builders and operators, the most commonly cited ones are: • No operating experience in this segment of specialized industry. • More severe environmental conditions in the wet ore grinding process. • An indifferent attitude of mill builders and electric motor manufacturers towards new drive technologies. • Limited confidence in solid-state power supply systems, such as frequency converters of the required size. There have been and still are numerous problems associated with low-speed geared mill drives of any kind, especially with individual motor/gear sizes approaching or exceeding about 4 MW (5,360 hp). Every mill builder knows about them, but operators learn to accept them as inevitable. The Decision to Change Three things combined to break this technological stalemate: the courage and progressive spirit of one major iron ore processor in Scandinavia, the cooperation of three experienced manufacturers, and an unusual application problem that could not be solved by any conventional approach. The last factor was surely the decisive one, but the first one does not come as a surprise either. The Swedes near Kiruna and the Norwegians around Kirkenes are experienced ore miners and processors, and much credit goes to them for technological breakthroughs in the industry. At A/S Sydvaranger in Kirkenes, above the Polar circle at about the latitude of Alaska's northern tip, the existing grinding facilities, with a total of 14 100 to 240-t/h (110 to 264-stph) ball mills, can not be expanded. Nevertheless, to increase mill throughput, only installing a larger mill in place of an existing smaller one was a practical alternative. For this replacement, the owners set requirements that seemed impossible to meet: • The old 100-t/h (110-stph) ball mill should be replaced with a new ball mill with 10 times the rated throughput, without significantly impairing the operation of the remaining mills, and without significantly changing the mill building. • The new mill should have a variable-speed drive to ultimately optimize the grinding process by means of a closed-loop process¬computer-controlled grinding cycle, and to minimize the specific energy consumption. • Availability, efficiency, and life expectancy of all new components must be higher than those being replaced. • Inrush-current and harmonic loads on the rather weak electric supply line must be minimized to ensure safe plant operation. All old ball mills at A/S Sydvaranger are the geared type, using single synchronous and wound-rotor, slow-speed motors with ring-and-pinion gears. Operators are familiar with the limitations and problems associated with such drives, and they are aware that the following items become major concerns when drive powers are drastically increased: • Gears are subject to wear and tear, require frequent maintenance, and eventual replacement of major parts. • Gears are sensitive to misalignment, overload, and thermal distortion, limiting their useful life. • On dual or quadruple drives, load-sharing and torque oscillations between motors can be a major reason for concern. • At these speeds, ring-and-pinion gears reach their torque transmission capabilities altogether at around 4 MW (5,360 hp) per motor/pinion. To obtain the desired variable-speed performance of the new drive, the only practical and economical conventional solution would have been a frequency-controlled, low- or medium-speed dual motor drive with about 8 MW (10,720 hp) of power. This, however, was not feasible because of limited floor space. Therefore, bids were solicited for the alternative drive method, the gearless ring motor. General Considerations Why are such large mills considered? After all, one could avoid all the problems by simply staying with smaller mill unit sizes. Under competitive pressures of free markets, however, grinding efficiencies and specific energy consumption become key factors in selecting new equipment. Environmental degradation due to abandoned quarries is an international problem, more intense when these sites are found in urban or suburban zones, in environmentally sensitive areas or are visible from sites of special interest. Rehabilitation solutions applied worldwide, range from simple relief restoration and planting to more sophisticated site exploitation in order to serve specific social needs. The elaboration of rational rehabilitation plans for every site presupposes deep knowledge and comparative evaluation of all the parameters of the problem. In this paper, a methodological approach of rehabilitation solutions for abandoned quarry sites is elaborated, based on domestic and international experience and practice. Solutions are grouped in eight main categories. In every category the framework of prerequisites and confinements (environmental, technical, social, economic, legal) for their application in Greek quarry site is investigated. A comparative assessment of alternative restoration solutions is introduced, using tools supplied by environmental economics, cost-benefit analysis, G.I.S. and multi-criteria analysis and follows in two stages: 1) Establishment of a set of criteria aiming at a priority list for a number of quarry sites located in a geographical or administrative district. 2) Assessment of alternative solutions for every single quarry from the previous priority list for the selection of the most adequate using technical, economical, social and environmental criteria.

Some 146 kt (4.69 billion oz) of gold have been mined throughout history. Of this, 70% has been mined in this century alone, with 17% produced from 1985 through 1996 (Fig. 1 and Table 1). Until the mid-19th century, placers were the chief source of gold. Advancements in mining, metallurgy and geological thinking have resulted in underground mining (first of veins plus stockworks and later of Rand-type deposits) becoming the principal source of gold. With the demise of the South African deposits and the move towards lower grade ores, the primary source of gold will be from disseminated deposits exploited through large, open-pit mines. For the past 200 years, there has been a fairly constant ratio of about 31 g (1 oz) of gold to each person alive. If this ratio is to be maintained, annual gold production will have to rise from about 2.3 kt/a (73.9 million oz/year) to more than 3.1 kt/a (99.7 million oz/year) by the year 2000. To effect this increase, an unforeseen breakthrough in exploration or metallurgy is needed. Barring this, there will be pressure for an increase in the price of gold. This article traces the historical production of gold from 4000 B.C. - the earliest record of gold mining - to today and relates this 6,000-year record to advances in geological thinking, mining engineering and extractive metallurgy. It also proposes that man's thirst for gold, reflected in the price he will pay for gold, and his ability to find, mine and refine gold have combined to effect an equilibrium based loosely on the historical ratio of 31 g (1 oz) of cumulative gold production per each man or woman alive.
