What is the cummulative rate of recovery of copper from a sulfide leach dump? This is one of the most frequently asked questions today. We, in the industry, ask it of each other when we meet; however, the technical answers may vary from "I don't know" to 'quite good" from people within the same company. Management also poses this question because it plays a vital role in our planning for future production. The answer is difficult because of the many variables between different operations such as physical construction of the dump, topography of the original site, characteristics of dump material, mineralization, water application, etc. Each has a bearing on the rate of recovery. OPERATIONAL DATA Our method of water distribution is unique in that each dump is drilled to allow physical injection of water into the dump. The in¬jection holes are drilled vertically, on 251 centers, from the surface of the dump. Normally, the holes are drilled 40' deep and cased with 4" PVC perforated pipe.. The pipe is perforated at one-foot intervals with four V diameter holes at 901 spacing on the pipe circumference. We formerly alternated shallow holes (20'-40') with deep holes (80'-l80') in an effort to cover the entire dump and hasten oxidation. The shallow hole depth varied according to the compaction thickness. The deep hole depth varied according to the height of the dump and the original ground profile, We prefer to have the deep holes end 20'-30' above the original ground level. This generally allows us to penetrate the coarse material at the bottom of the dump. We had to discontinue the deep holes_ in order to cover more dump area in a shorter period of time to meet increased production requirements.

Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation developed a quarry operation in 1971 and 1972 for the production of high calcium limestone and construction aggregates, or roadstone. The quarry operation is situated in southeastern Pennsylvania in the northern part of Lancaster County. The geology of the high calcium limestone deposit had a powerful influence on all aspects of planning this operation. My purpose is to trace the influence of geology throughout the planning and thereby point out the discipline that geology imposed on the planning, and indeed, continues to impose on the operation. Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation is one of four wholly- owned subsidiary companies of Kurtz Materials Corporation. Kurtz Materials Corporation, through its operating subsidiaries, is a supplier of basic materials to the construction industry including crushed stone, ready mixed concrete, concrete masonry units and a wide range of precast and prestressed concrete products.

Attendees at December?s Arizona SME Section Conference at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort outside of Tucson, AZ were feeling optimistic and ready to get to work after a year of steady growth and recovery in the mining industry. During the two-day event (Dec. 5-6, 2010) and the preceding American Mining Hall of Fame banquet and awards ceremony, the focus was on copper, worldwide population growth and regulatory pressures, with several smart new projects featured alongside updates to traditional large-scale copper development projects. Keynote speaker Timothy Snider, chair of the University of Arizona?s Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources, hit the mood of cautious optimism when he analyzed the global demand for resources, using the case example of copper. Over the next 20 years, he said, the world?s population is expected to grow to 9.2 billion and the average annual per capita copper use is expected to rise from 2.2 to 4.5 kg (5 to 10 lb). The increase in demand will provide tremendous opportunity for mining companies, he said, but cautioned that the opportunities are balanced by negative influences on demand and pressures on supply. While demand for copper is currently growing, Snider noted that there were significant downward pressures on demand as well. These included a western world that is overbuilt, in-creasing use of substitute materials in new construction and the rise of wireless devices. He also noted new regulatory pressures, and pointed out that resource development now had to occur within a context of sustainability on several levels.

The 2014 George A. Fox Conference at the Graduate Center, City University of New York in New York City was presented under the theme, ?21st Century Challenges for the Tunneling Industry. Bruce Grewcock, chief executive officer and president of Peter Kiewit Sons? Inc., opened the conference with a keynote address in which he set the tone for the rest of the day by touching on the many challenges the industry is facing, which are plentiful and complex. Covering the breadth of the industry, he spoke about everything from the technical challenges that come from working beneath the streets of some of the most densely populated regions in the world to the challenges that come from working with the people who live in those areas. ?My observation is that we, as an industry, are being asked to put structures in places where they are needed, but are complex environments to work in,? said Grewcock. ?We work in an industry that relies on some of the most technically challenging engineering in the world, and when we are done with a project, we cover it up and no one ever sees it.? Despite these issues, Grewcock said that, in his opinion, the biggest challenge the industry is facing is that of people; more precisely, where to find the next batch of people. Looking out at the conference-record crowd of more than 400 registered attendees, Grewcock quipped that he saw plenty of gray beards and asked aloud, ?Where will we find, educate and train the people to tackle the issues that this industry will face in the future??

The design and construction of a new 140-ton-per-day R. O. M. phosphate rock scrubbing and washing plant was undertaken by Western Knapp Engineering Company, a Division of Arthur G. McKee and Company, for the J. R. Simplot Company, Minerals and Chemical Division, Pocatello, Idaho. The new plant replaces the owner's existing facilities at Conda, Idaho, seven miles northeast of Soda Springs in the southeast corner of Idaho. Replacement of the existing facilities became necessary because of loss in production and recovery. These losses were due in part to varying grades of raw ore from the mine and to the type of process equipment used in the old plant to upgrade the ore. Increase In production and grade was further necessary by demands created by expansion of facilities in Pocatello, Idaho, where all process ore from this plant is shipped. The new process scheme includes an ore-feeding system, scrubbing, screening, classification, wet cycloning, attritioning, filtering, drying, storage and shipping facilities. Space was also left for future increases of scrubbing and classification capacity and for heavy media separation. It is the purpose of this paper to take up some of the considerations necessary in the design of small mills in order to achieve the desired objectives of a successful plant, such as production, minimum operating cost and maintenance cost.

Bulkspray cooling has been economically applied in cooling the hot environment of South African gold mines for the past two decades. Its success in that country led to its introduction at Gulf Mineral Resources Co.'s Mt. Taylor Mine in 1981 when increased drifting imposed additional cooling requirements. The bulkspray cooler developed and used at Mt. Taylor has a heat transfer capability of about 500 to 1500 kW. It is compact and portable, designed to be moved as required to maintain working temperatures in the advancing drift faces.

In the spring of 1991, Western Aggregates, Inc. began operating the newest expanded shale lightweight aggregate operation in North America. The operation is located in Jefferson County, Colorado, just south of Boulder, at the sight of the former Ideal Basic Industries ("Idealite") lightweight aggregate plant, which was decommissioned in 1975. The "new" facility has been built to principally serve the Denver and Front Range markets, as well as ship products into other locations in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Kansas and Nebraska. Western Aggregates is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Inco U.S., a subsidiary of Inco Limited of Toronto, Canada. Inco Limited is the free world's largest producer of nickel and is a leading producer of copper, cobalt, gold, silver, and platinum group metals, high nickel and super alloys, and specialized engineered products. Inco is constantly seeking new mining related investments that leverage off its mining and processing skills and that meet corporate fmancial objectives. Construction materials are an area presently being pursued by Inco. The basic 'building blocks' of society, from a construction perspective, are sand and gravel, stone, and aggregates. To the vast majority of people these are natural products that are mined, quarried or dredged, and other than washing, screening and crushing, are generally used in their primary form. While these materials vary from quartzite river rock, to calcified limestone, to hard basalt, they are generally classified as "heavy" aggregates. There are, however, other types of aggregates that do not fall under the "heavy" classification, but are used in general construction activities just the same.

"This paper describes the development of a 3D finite element model for predicting ground movements caused by construction of 7.1 m diameter twin bored tunnels for the Crossrail project in London using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines. The model uses the commercial FE code, Plaxis 3D, to represent the face pressure, conical shield, grouting process and activation of precast segmental concrete lining systems through a set of boundary conditions that advance through the soil mass along a prescribed trajectory. Soil behavior is described using the Mohr-Coulomb soil model with input parameters calibrated from laboratory element tests. The analyses focus on the performance of the EPB tunneling machines in greenfield conditions beneath Hyde Park, where the tunneling occurs within deep layers of relatively uniform London Clay. The model predictions are in good agreement with surface and sub-surface vertical settlements measured at a well-instrumented section, but tend to overestimate the measured lateral displacements towards the tunnel. Ongoing studies are focused on the role of soil behavior and the approximations in FE model predictions of tunnel-induced ground deformations. Introduction Since their introduction in the 1970’s, closed-face Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines have become widely used for soft ground tunnel construction. The EPB design relies on a screw conveyor system to regulate the pressure of the excavated soil/spoil within the head chamber and hence control stability at the face of the machine. One of the key design issues in the application of EPB machines is to establish how control parameters, including the advance rate, face pressure and grouting processes (used to compensate for the tail void at the rear of the shield and to infill gaps between the precast lining rings and surrounding soil) affect and/or control the far-field ground movements. For closed-face systems, short-term deformations are associated with ground losses at the face, overcutting and ploughing of the shield and poor control of grouting in the tail void; while long-term deformations can occur due to consolidation and creep within the surrounding soil (and are closely connected to the seepage boundary conditions;e.g., Laver & Soga, 2012). The control parameters for advancing the EPB machine can have a significant effect on the magnitude and distribution of the far-field deformations. Therefore, analyses of the ground response to tunneling require accurate modeling of the soil stratigraphy and constitutive behavior as well as the construction process. Finite element (FE) methods have been used to simulate tunnel construction since the early 1980s, but only a few studies involved three-dimensional modelling of mechanized tunneling (e.g., Finno and Clough 1985; Bernat and Cambou 1999; Swoboda and Abu-Krisha 1999; Dias et.al. 2000; Melis et.al. 2002; Kasper and Meschke 2004; Möller 2006). In order to get a better understanding of the effect of the construction process and soil properties on the development of the ground deformations more comprehensive models of tunnel excavation and tunnel support are required in order to capture the 3D nature of mechanized tunneling and the effect of construction parameters such as advance rate, face and grout pressure."

This study reports that routine mining activities could produce a high number of nanometer sized particles which have not been well characterized and may represent an unacknowledged exposure present in the mining environment. A preliminary survey of the particle emission from the feed-leg drilling activity was conducted in the excavations of an experimental mine. The level of particulate exposure was monitored by real time direct reading instruments include a NanoScan scanning mobility particle sizer (measurement range 10-420 nm) and an optical particle sizer (measurement range 0.3-10 μm). Particulate morphological and structural examination was conducted through transmission and scanning electron microscopy and x-ray dispersive analysis of samples collected by a thermophoretic sampler, and a novel nanoparticle sampler. The real time instrument data revealed high concentrations (> 3.5 x 106 particles/cm3) of ultrafine/nanoparticles generated from the drilling activity. Analysis of particle sampler specimens with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy showed a large amount of submicron silica, spherical primary particles and agglomerated soot particles rich in carbon. Exposure to particles in the nanometer size from various sources within the mining environment may be associated with the poorly understood rise in respiratory and systemic disease among miners. INTRODUCTION Exposures to mine dust have been measured and evaluated for decades. Exposures to aerosolized dust such as coal or silica particles can cause lung and other diseases (1-7). One way that The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) characterizes inhalation exposures within the mining environment is through measuring the respirable dust mass concentration within the breathing zone of workers (8). Respirable particulate matter (RPM) is of great concern due to its ability to deposit in the alveolar region of the lungs (9-10) where it can affect respiratory function. Interventions championed by MSHA have greatly reduced the prevalence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Although great progress has been made, the prevalence of CWP and PMF appears to be trending upwards and the measured increase in prevalence is not elucidated in RPM measurements (11-12). Though the presence and risk associated with ultrafine particles such as emission from diesel engine within the mining environment has been previously established (13-14). There is suspicion within the mining industry that this resurgence of lung disease may be due to very fine particulate matter from various source that is not properly characterized by current sampling methods. Nanometer sized particles, in the range of ultrafine particles, fall within the RPM size range and have been found to deposit in all regions of the respiratory tract (15). Nanoparticles are commonly accepted as particles that are greater than 1 nm in two or three dimensions but smaller than 100 nm (16). Once in the lungs, nanoparticles can enter the blood stream (17) and selectively affect other target organs such as the heart, liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and brain (15,18-19). The size of nanoparticles has been shown to correlate with their translocation behavior on secondary target organs (20-21). There is strong evidence that the clearance mechanisms used to rid the lungs of particulate matter are not as effective on nanometer sized particles, leading to a greater fraction of never-cleared particles which may enhance disease development (20). Research has demonstrated that nanometer sized particles have unique properties (22) whose adverse health impact is greater than what has been found with micrometer sized particles of the same type (23-26). The large ratio of surface area to mass compared to larger particles is believed to make nanoparticles a greater hazard. The prolonged exposure of equipment operators to shock and whole-body vibration (WBY) is linked to cumulative back, neck, and abdominal disorders. In low-coal mines, space restrictions make seat suspensions difficult to use in isolating operators from shock and WBY. Researchers at NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, are responding to these issues by investigating viscoelastic foams. For the full-load case. an ergonomic seat with viscoelastic foams isolated the shuttle car operator from shock at 15Hz. Researchers used results from additional foam testing with an analytical model to identify viscoelastic foams that provide shock isolation at a frequency below 5 Hz.

This paper will discuss bentonite deposits in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The discussion will be re¬stricted to a review of the so-called calcium or non-swelling bentonites. In other words the exchangeable cation is calcium. The term "bentonite" is used to describe a clay material, composed essentially of the clay mineral montmorillonite. In addition, bentonites may contain various impurities such as glass shards, feldspar, quartz, muscovite and biotite mica, glauconite, pyrite, hydrated iron oxide, gypsum, organic material, etc, Most of the southern calcium bentonites contain at least 70% montmorillonite, Bentonite as mined may range in color from dark grayish greens through various shades of grays, reds, yellows and browns to nearly white. It is normally massive and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. When air dried, closely spaced shrinkage fractures occur. Moist bentonite has a soapy feel, with little or no obvious "grit". Bentonite deposits were first discovered in Mississippi about 1925, in southern Monroe County. During the thirties and early 1940's, deposits were identified in Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Perhaps the earliest production of southern bentonite was from a deposit in the valley of the Tombigdee River, south of Jackson, Alabama in 1936. Production commenced in Mississippi during the latter part of 1938 at Pontotoc. The growth and development of the bentonite industry in the southern United States owes its beginning to three events. The United States Forest Service, as a land managing agency, is responsible for the surface administration of National Forest lands. The basic objectives of management are protection and utilization of renewable resources such as water, forage, timber, wildlife, recreation, and clean air. Much of the National Forest land in this country is open to mineral prospecting and development. When large de-posits of minerals are extracted from the forest environment, especially by surface methods, there are oftentimes conflicts between accepted mining methods and the objectives of other resource management goals. Such is the situation in Southeast Idaho where several members of the phosphate industry are operating on and adjacent to the Caribou National Forest. In 1966, the phosphate industry and the Caribou National Forest became mutually concerned with the problems of rehabilitating mined areas and minimizing potential damage to adjacent forest areas. A Cooperative Administrative Study was initiated with industry supporting the Forest Service financially and with equipment, material, and manpower, as well as interest and enthusiasm. The objectives of the study are to provide basic, applicable information pertinent to: 1. Protecting the quality of water emanating from mined water-sheds. 2. Providing for soil stabilization on mined areas. 3. Returning mined areas to surface resource production. 4. The feasibility of making mined areas esthetically acceptable. It was concluded that the following separate--yet intergrated--fields should be studied in order to obtain the desired information:

Solution mining operations often encounter difficulty maintaining adequate leach solution flow into the ore formation because of loss of formation permeability near the injection well. Permeability loss caused by swelling and breakup of clays and fine particle migration can often be the cause of the problem.

INTRODUCTION The introduction of 165-mm (61/z-in.) holes to underground mining operations has made possible the application of Canadian Industries Ltd's (CIL) vertical crater retreat (VCR) mining method, illustrated in the accompanying sketches. This unique and revolutionary new application of spherical charge technology (see the Appendix), when applied to primary stopes and pillar recovery, eliminates raise boring, slot cutting, and dilu¬tion of ore by backfill; greatly improves fragmentation; reduces labor and time requirements; eliminates uphole drilling and blasting; and minimizes or completely elimi¬nates damages by blasts to the walls and retreating backs of the stope or pillar. If vertical large diameter holes are drilled on a designed pattern from a cut over a stope or pillar to bottom in the back of the undercut, and spherical charges of explosives are placed within these holes at the calculated optimum distance from the back of the undercut and detonated, a vertical thickness of ore will be blasted downwards into the previously mined area. Repeating this loading and blasting procedure, min¬ing of the stope or pillar retreats in the form of horizontal slices in a vertical upwards direction until the top sill is blasted and the mining of a stope or pillar is completed. The VCR method is also applicable to drop raises and has the potential to replace all other raising methods under most circumstances. PILLAR RECOVERY Levack Mine Inco Metals Co., Ontario Div., provided the first opportunity for the method in pillar recovery. The Levack mine's high grade ore pillar No. 4800 on the 975-m (3200-ft) level was used for the production¬scale experiment (Figs. 1 to 3). The pillar was about 49 m (160 ft) long, 6 m (20 ft) wide, and 20 to 26 m (65 to 85 ft) high. The mined area on both sides of the pillar was backfilled with a 1:30 cement:sand mixture. The pillar was removed in two phases. In phase 1, the standard uphole method was used to blast down the 18-m (60-ft) long section of waste from the bottom of the ore into the undercut. From the pillar's top sill, 165-mm (61/a-in.) holes were drilled downward into the pillar, and by measuring the depth of the holes, the results of the uphole blast were determined and roof line 1 was established. The bottom of each hole was plugged, then filled with sand to place the center of gravity of each spherical charge (loaded from the top sill) at a predetermined optimum distance from the horizontal free surface. The charges were then detonated. After detonation, both draw drifts were full of extremely well-broken material. The depth of each hole was measured again, and the plot of these depths re¬sulted in roof line 2. The same blasting procedure was repeated and the resultant new back elevation was marked by roof line 3. The poor results of the initial uphole blast at one location (notice the peak in area 1) appeared to influ¬ence the subsequent new backs. A third blast success¬fully evened the back, and resulted in roof line 4. An unblasted slab averaging 6.3 m (20.9 ft) thick remained below the pillar's top elevation as the final sill. In all three spherical charge blasts fragmentation of the blasted material was extremely fine. The backfill was fully exposed on both sides of the now-blasted pillar. The backfill remained undamaged and the ore was not diluted by sand. The remnants of all the 165-mm (61/2 -in.) holes remained clean and undamaged, and the holes had well-defined bottoms that could be easily measured and plugged. Each blast took down a 3.9 to 4.2-m (13 to 14-ft) thick horizontal slab of ore. Productivity was three times greater than that of the previously practiced cut-and-fill method. Since this was the first such experiment, blasting the remaining 6-m (20-ft) thick final slab was the sub¬ject of some deliberation. If the described method was repeated, we could have ended up with a 1.8-m (6-ft) thick sill unsafe to work on. Sulfuric acid mist is an undesired by-product of the copper electrowinning process, caused by oxygen evolution at the anode which entrains droplets of the acidic copper electrolyte solution. As the oxygen moves to the surface of the cell, these droplets become aerosolized resulting in acid mist. The addition of chemical anti-misting agents to the copper electrolyte is a common mitigation technique. This paper details Syensqo’s laboratory development of a new environmentally friendly acid mist suppressant, ACORGA® EW98. The product exhibits excellent acid mist suppression and it is fully compatible with the adjacent solvent extraction process. Lab and pilot test results are reviewed ahead of future planned industrial trial testing.

Natural ochres, umbers, hematites, and magnetites were once used in their crude or semi-processed state for their pigment value in construction products and low-end coatings applications, while yielding, in recent years, to synthetically produced iron oxides for more sophisticated products. Today, through innovative mining, processing, and marketing techniques, natural iron oxide pigments are once again gaining strong inroads into products and markets requiring precise chemical and physical characteristics. With our focus on environmental consciousness and resource conservation, value added natural iron oxides provide an economical and responsible alternative to our color needs.

Sometimes in assessing where we are and where we are going it is informative to take a look at where we have been. Whether or not it adds to our understanding of the present, I think it may be interesting to review some of the past history of our industry. As a starting point I chose to use the famous Paley Commission Report, formally known as "The U. S. President's materials Policy Commission -Resources for Freedom."(l) The Paley Commission report said "Fluorspar is an essential raw material for the steel, aluminum, and chemical industries." Of course this statement is still true. It also said, "United States known reserves of fluorspar would be sufficient for some 15 years at present rates of consumption--about 426 000 short tons in 1960. Projected consumption for 1975, however, is several times as great, and reserves in other free countries do not appear adequate to supply United States deficiencies during the next 25 years." This simply demonstrates how even the most learned and competent people can observe all the facts avail-able to them at a given time and yet be unable to predict the future very accurately. We all know that reserves in other countries are more than adequate to supply the United States today, 25 years since the report was published. In fact, the report estimated free-world reserves at something over 36 million tonnes (40 million short tons). Contrast this with 246 million tonnes (271 million short tons) estimated as total world reserves from the section on fluorspar from Commodity Data Summaries of 1974, published by the Department of the Interior. (2) The Paley Report discusses other matters pertaining to fluorspar that are still of interest, such as improving mining methods. Furthermore, it certainly did a good forecasting job in noting that greater recycling should become possible in the aluminum industry in regard to fluorine lost in wastes and also concerning the substitution of fluorspar in the steel industry by other fluxing materials. It also suggested that non-fluorine containing propellants should be investigated as a replacement of those containing fluorine as a conservation matter. Some discussion was devoted to recovering the fluorine content of phosphate rock, which is being practiced today, but was in its infancy in 1950.

This study provides valuable insights into the leadership behaviors of younger and older managers within a large Swedish mining company, highlighting the importance of managerial experience and targeted training programs to foster effective leadership, particularly in the context of change management. The findings emphasize the need to create work environments that support managers to develop their leadership, contributing to improved employee well-being, operational efficiency, and adaptation to the changing demands of the modern mining sector.
