One of the most challenging and ambitious dump rehabilitation projects in South Africa’s mining industry is being carried out at Greenside Colliery’s smoldering coal dump, which lies adjacent to the N 12 Johannesburg-Witbank highway. Greenside Colliery is the largest coal mine in the Gold Fields Group. It began operation in 1946, the year in which the burning dump had its origins. Today, Gold Fields plans to spend R16 million (about $USS8 million) to encapsulate the dump, bringing it into compliance with South Africa’s Mining Environmental Management Programme, according to Martin Hamer, engineering manager of the Greenside Colliery. The improved environmental management approach will result in reduced sulfur dioxide gas, smoke and dust emisson into the air and an enhanced aesthetic appearance of the dump from the N 12 highway. The objectives of the project are to place and compact coal discard to within the National Institute of Coal Research specifications in order to prevent spontaneous combustion, and to preserve as an asset the coal portion of the discard.

Frasch sulfur production/pricing decisions are based on market demand, less nondiscretionary sulfur supply. Price covers the cost of Frasch production and byproduct sellers accept the Frasch price structure. Large stocks have led Canadian byproduct producers to price aggressively at times, but their near-term drawdown suggests more passive price policies in the 1990s. Expanding continental nondiscretionary supply is combining with sizable Frasch supply increments to weaken prices. Simulations using a market model embodying these structural characteristics indicate that expanding demand may not result in substantial recovery from 1992 price lows before 1996.

This study examines the problems involved with the control of characteristics of the products resulting from comminution operations. A methodology of investigation based on texture analysis procedures by image processing techniques of the comminution product is proposed. Some examples of applications are considered with particular reference to comminution products of different textural, structural and mechanical characteristics. The advantages and the limites of this method of approach are, indicated, both as regards performance of the investigations and subsequent processing of results.

INTRODUCTION Geophysical applications to engineering projects are usually considered for reconnaissance exploration, and for some preliminary design phases. Recent experience indicates a growing need and a greater number of requests for measurements during construction. This is particularly true where seismic velocity values are related to strength properties of rock. Typical project objectives during construction are: dike and tunnel realignments required by surprise conditions encountered during foundation preparation; checks on grouting effectiveness which require velocity measurements before and after grouting; and dynamic moduli measurements along the walls of tunnels and deep excavations. This paper considers one of the on-site seismic applications that is rather simple and straightforward, and yet has few references in the literature. The specific objective is the measurement of seismic velocities (both "P" waves and "S" waves) for determining the thicknesses and dynamic moduli values of loosened zones of tunnel wall rock. The electrochemical nature of mineral-grinding media interaction in the wet grinding of one and two sulfide mineral ores was investigated with regard to the flotation behaviors of the minerals. Two iron sulfides (pyrite and pyrrhorite) and mild steel were used to represent the sulfide minerals and the grinding media, respectively. Galvanic currents in two- and three-electrode combinations under abrasive and non abrasive conditions were correlated with the floatabilities of these minerals under corresponding conditions.

INTRODUCTION Davy McKee have developed and patented a combined mixer settler (CMS) which has undergone extensive trials and has now been installed in two commercial uranium plants in South Africa. Substantial capital and operating cost savings can be realized over conventional mixer settler in uranium extraction, especially from dilute feedstocks containing approximately 200 ppm U308. Pilot plant work has also been undertaken on other metal extraction systems and the results are very encouraging in most areas of interest. CONVENTIONAL MIXER SETTLERS The conventional plant in use at many uranium recovery facilities consists typically of a mixer box in which the aqueous and organic phases are contacted and a settler in which the two phases separate. The mixer box must allow sufficient residence time for the mass transfer kinetics to be satisfied for the particular species involved. The settlers are usually rectangular and take the form of shallow tanks of large cross sectional area.

Innovative designs, mining, construction and reclamation practices are used at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara's Batu Hijau mine on Sumbawa Indonesia to develop a cost-effective, environmentally sound, stockpile and dumping system. The mine production rate is over 200 million tonnes per year (50 million tonnes processed with 150 million tonnes being stockpiled for processing later or placed in waste dumps). Dump development for over 150 million tonnes per year in a mountainous, tropical environment, while meeting environmental and permitting requirements is not an easy task. The effective implementation requires innovative techniques and practices from every department of the mine.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc.’s Betze open pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, NV. Ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County (Fig. 1). The final pit will be about 2440 m long x 1550 m wide (8000 x 5100 ft), elongate in a west-northwesterly direction and about 425 m (1400 ft) deep. The pit straddles the Barrick-Newmont Gold Co. property boundary. History The first hole at the Goldstrike Mine was drilled in 1962. Between 1963 and 1964, 17 shallow holes were drilled with little encouragement, in view of the price of gold at $1.12/g ($35/oz). From 1962 to 1975, several different companies explored the Goldstrike property. In 1975, Pancana Industries acquired the property. The objective of this study was to prove repeat loading capacities of physically stabilized fungal biomass from Penicillium sp. for the removal and recovery of uranium from mine water (Denison Mines). The testwork was carried out on a bench scale in small columns and proved that it is possible to stabilize the biomass in an inorganic compound. A lifetime of 10 loading-eluting cycles of the stabilizer biomass product was obtained by additional pretreatment. Sodium carbonate proved to be an effective elution medium. Loading and elution can be controlled by the pH values of the column. The effective loading capacity until the breakthrough point is approximately 70 % of the overall loading capacity. The loading capacities of the stabilizer biomass product are comparable to that of the original biomass. Uranium recoveries of 90 to 99 % were achieved during the loading and eluting under optimized conditions. Depending on the used biomass the described process might be applicable to remove uranium or other dissolved heavy or rare metals from effluents.

The success of the industrial minerals end of the mining industry is often overshadowed by the high price of copper, the glamour of gold, and the nation's huge reserves of coal. Those three segments of the industry, however, along with every other business in the world, could not function without the products that are composed of a variety of industrial minerals. And, according to Haydn H. Murray, past president of SME, the value of industrial minerals in the United States is more than triple that of metals, about $19 billion a year versus $6 billion. In the developed countries of the world, he said, the value of industrial minerals is nearly always greater than the value of metallic minerals. Murray, also a professor of geology at Indiana University, was the luncheon speaker at the SME-sponsored Grinding of Industrial Minerals conference held in Asheville, NC this past September. Producers of industrial minerals know they must squeeze the maximum value out of the industrial mineral being mined and processed, Murray told the audience of about 100 people. Grinding and particle size, then, are vital to a commodity's profitability.

The impact that societal issues can have on mineral resource projects has proven to be a critical component of feasibility studies around the world during the past ten years. The recently signed Impact Benefits Agreement (?IBA?) for the Victor Project in Northern Ontario between De Beers Canada Inc. (?De Beers?) and the Attawapiskat First Nation provides an opportunity to capture the interactive process followed, the controlling parameters and the implications for the future. The uncertainty about the time required to complete an IBA makes it one of the key intangibles in risk assessment of a feasibility study. This paper considers items related to the significance of engaging communities at the early stages of exploration in a project and the catalytic effect that alignment of interests and interaction in a pre-IBA period can have. Furthermore, the de facto link between permitting and the successful conclusion of the IBA and the role of external advisors in the project are discussed. The paradox of empowering and supporting communities through the negotiation process, and the implications of the IBA to maintaining good relations throughout the life cycle of a project are also explored.

Polymers of a wide variety of composition are used in coal and mineral beneficiation. Applications include flocculation and coagulation in thickeners, filtration enhancement, mill scale control, dust control, ore leaching improvement, and pond management. The proper chemistry of the polymer is determined by many factors, including the nature of the process, mineral type, and respective performance requirements. This paper provides an overview of the various current applications of polymers in mineral processing, and a description of the applicable polymer chemistries which find utility in these applications. The 1982 recession set the US mining and metals industries reeling. Will the oncoming recession of 1991 hit as hard? Probably not, thanks to a shallower downturn, a weaker dollar and remarkable lower costs. Effects of the last recession That the 1982 recession was traumatic to the American mining and metals industry is an understatement. Quantities of metals consumed dropped. Metals prices fell despite continuing general inflation. The resulting real gross revenues of producers of each of the major metals plunged, in the trough of 1982, to levels one-fourth to two-thirds of those of the peak of 1979 (Table 1). By contrast, most industries in the United States were not hit anywhere nearly as hard. Real GNP, the aggregate of all production, slipped only 1 % from 1979 to 1982. Metals are most sensitive to the business cycle because of their applications. All metals but gold are raw materials to downstream industries. Raw materials are victims of strong fluctuations. This is because buying industries try to hold high inventories in boom periods when goods are in short supply. They reduce inventory levels in buyers markets when suppliers have idle capacity and raw materials are in ample supply.

Globalization Earth-spanning technologies are shrinking the world into an economic village, causing corporations to think and plan on a global scale. This “globalization” is one of the great buzzwords of the 1990s, meaning precisely whatever the user says it means. In this case, let us take it to mean that political boundaries arc less restrictive than in the past, permitting mining companies new freedom to roam the globe for ore bodies. Evolving out of this are global mining houses that have ownership and management interests in labyrinthian webs of mines spanning the world. Investigations were carried out to determine the effects of changing metamorphic conditions on the formation of magnetite from the Itakpe iron ore deposit. Various magnetite grain sizes from ferruginous quartzites from different zones were determined and analyzed statistically. The results reflect the reaction of mineral individuals. In particular, the granulometry of magnetite changed with changes in the mineral formation conditions in the deposit and correlate with the mineralo-geochemical zones. This is interpreted as part of a readjustment of the mineral to the prevailing conditions. Because granulometry is a prebeneficiation parameter, this work will be, no doubt, of importance to the exploitation and beneficiation of the quartzites and rich ores.

Since the first recorded discovery of lead in southeast Missouri near Fredericktown about 1720, knowledge of the deposits has advanced in spurts as a result of outlying discoveries: 1864 Bonne Terre 1890 Flat River, Desloge, Leadwood 1948 Indian Creek 1955 Viburnum The original discoveries at Bonne Terre consisted of residual galena in clay, similar to that in the previous finds at Fredericktown. Occurrences in solid dolomite were not noted until mining of the clay pits exposed the walls of the weathered depressions. The St. Joseph Lead Co. had been established to conduct the operations and it was J. Wyman Jones, first president of St. Joe, who at that time brought about the first of the technological advances that were to occur in the district. He proposed use of the newly invented diamond drill to explore the bedrock showings, after observing the machines in the Vermont Marble Belt.

The tunneling construction industry faces a new challenge in endeavoring to comply with the multitude of regulations and standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and to work following accepted and experienced tunneling practices. Tunnel inspections appear to be gaining in priority. The national OSHA inspection activities reported for the year 1976 in the construction industry are as follows: 989 Inspections 45 As result of Accidents 186 As result of Complaints 605 General 153 Follow Up 34% Were found to be in compliance 714 Citations were Issued 1,825 Violations were found (201 of which were serious; 1573 were non-serious; 51 were imminent danger. There were no recorded failures to abate a violation in our industry.) The five general priorities by which a company would be scheduled for an inspection in descending order are: imminent danger situations, reports of fatal accidents or catastrophies, inspections in response to valid employee C( taints, inspections of work places covered by National Emphasis Program NEP, (OSHA's NEP has been designed to impact on any industry having a very high injury or illness rate) and finally random inspections of work places covered by OSHA. The following criteria in selecting companies for random inspections is used by OSHA.

"In the mining industry, high-level commitments to adopt sustainability have been made at the corporate levels of mining companies, but there continue to be problems when attempts are made to adopt these high-level sustainability aspirations and translate them into appropriate targets and methods at the more-specific operational level. The integration of sustainability principles into day-to-day minerals processing operational decision-making processes has unique challenges that are not addressed adequately by current tools and methodologies. A proposed methodology to achieve integration of sustainability at the operational level will direct the systematic and rigorous identification and characterisation of sustainability issues in an operation. The methodology allows different approach strategies for assessment, comprehensive accounting of sustainability indicators and has the ability to identify sustainability issues which may have significant business implications that cannot be identified using traditional analysis processes."
