The Northeast Raw Water Tunnel transports untreated water to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department's (DWSD) Northeast Water Plant where it is treated and distributed. The occurrence of a subsidence area which was attributed to the tunnel prompted the DWSD to have the tunnel investigated. After an extensive historical and geotechnical investigation, two access shafts were constructed along the alignment in the vicinity of the subsidence. Following completion of the shafts, the subsidence area was inspected in the wet prior to dewatering the tunnel. Upon the completion of dewatering, a dry inspection was performed. During the dry inspection, an area of significant distress was encountered where sand and silt were boiling into the tunnel along with large volumes of groundwater. This distressed area was located 800m (1/2 mile) north of the original subsidence area. The tunnel was immediately refilled with water and an emergency repair program was planned and implemented. As a result of the distressed nature of the secondary tunnel liner, dewatering of the tunnel could not be performed until the secondary liner and the surrounding soils were stabilized. This paper presents a case history of both the investigation and the repairs of the Northeast Raw Water Tunnel including the various grouting and unique tunnel stabilization methodologies which were utilized.

Foreword In loose ground and soft rock formations, mechanical tunnel boring is necessarily dependent on the adoption of shield machines and the application of adequate support or lining structures. These structures are erected either within or immediately behind the rear portion of the shield and provide the required reaction to the forward thrust. In competent rock formations where systematic support is not a requirement, hard rock tunnel boring machines generally advance by thrusting from a structure gripped against the tunnel walls. These machines may feature a more or less extended cutterhead shield or roof support, but when in weathered, fractured or otherwise weakened ground, or in fault zones filled with soft gouge, the gripper mechanism often cannot provide enough thrust reaction to advance the cutterhead. Under these conditions, early support of the arch and walls is generally required in the form of rock bolts, steel rings and laggings and some times of a primary concrete lining placed in the short section between cutterhead and grippers. "This paper presents a conceptual design of an innovative tunnelling method named the Ring Pipe Jacking Method (RPJ) which is conducted by the Ring Pipe Jacking Machine (RPJM). The RPJM consists of a double ring shell which forms a ring section where small interlaced cutter heads or several micro tunnelling machines are assembled to cut soil. Similar to the conventional pipe jacking method, the RPJM also needs a thrust system, a slurry transport system, and a control system. To satisfy the need for large/super large or special section tunnels in future, the RPJM is designed to reduce sharply the excavation face to the annular section, thus enhancing the face stability. Part of the innovation is that the RPJM uses modular cutter heads or micro-TBMs which can be reused. The typical double shield shape can be easily changed by reinstalling the modular cutter heads. Modularity allows the tunnel to be cut in any cross-section shapes, ranging from a circular tunnel to a rectangular one. INTRODUCTION The demand and requirement to utilize urban underground space is rising with the rapid social development in recent years. It is necessary to reduce excavations of the urban ground surface to ensure smooth traffic in cities. Therefore the conventional open cut construction method for underground tunnels can no longer satisfy the need of practical engineering, and it is taken over by trenchless technologies .The Pipe jacking method is an important trenchless technology and is used more and more frequently to install underground pipelines, but the present pipe jacking method still has many problems. For example, it is not suitable for installing large-diameter tunnels and it also has difficulty in construction of short radius curved tunnels. This paper presents a conceptual design of an innovative pipe jacking machine named the Ring Pipe Jacking machine (RPJM) and introduces the correspondent Ring Pipe Jacking Method (RPJ) which can be applied to construct large-diameter tunnels. Furthermore, technical characteristics and superiority of the ring pipe jacking method are analyzed in this paper."

Introduction Although, in general, the openings created in domes or diapiric type salt deposits during mining operations are larger than those created in bedded deposits, the openings in bedded salts are of significant lateral extent. Thus, this paper will deal primarily with the dome deposits of the Gulf Coast and more specifically with the Avery Island dome operated by the International Salt Company where recent development activities have materially increased the sizes of previously standard openings. Geology The geology of salt deposits is the governing factor in the rock mechanics associated with the opening which is being created in the salt. Bedded salts are customarily characterized by having experienced solution along the interface between the top of the salt and the overlying bed. Thus, as the salt slowly dissolves there has been left behind a layer of laminated insolubles which is often incompetent. In most cases, this incompetent rock must be supported by a thickness of bedded salt which is left in the roof as support. Where this salt is of secondary deposition (recrystallized halite) with included moisture, additional thicknesses of roof salt are necessary to achieve stability. The salt which forms the domes of the Gulf Coast regions is from the Louann formation of the Jurassic period. These formations are dipping toward the Gulf of Mexico so that the upper tier of domes which have formed across northern Louisiana in an east-west direction into Mississippi and Texas have a salt source some 10 to 15,000 feet

INTRODUCTION The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is developing chemical explosive excavation as a construction technique for use on Civil Works projects. Large chemical charges are being used in multiple charge arrays in a variety of media and topographic situations to achieve actual construction projects. The target is the development of chemical and nuclear explosive excavation as an accepted cost-competitive construction technique. Military research using explosive excavation is also being conducted to apply this technique to military engineering for combat purposes and to military construction. The information gained from both the civil and military research is integrated into the overall development of explosive excavation. This research and development work is being conducted under the auspices of the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station Explosive Excavation Research Laboratory (EERL) located at Livermore, California. This organization was formed in 1962 as the Nuclear Cratering Group (NCG) to carry out the Corps of Engineers (OCE) portion of a joint agreement with the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to develop nuclear explosives for construction purposes. The AEC, through the Plowshare Division of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory at Livermore, California, has been responsible for developing nuclear explosives, conducting nuclear cratering experiments, developing nuclear safety information, and developing methods for predicting the shape of the craters. "Since the mid-19th century the River Emscher in the German Ruhr District has been used for disposing of wastewater. In the early 1990s, it was decided to replace the existing open wastewater system with a sewer system and to restore the River Emscher to its natural state. The major Emscher conversion project is divided into a large number of individual schemes, with construction phase 30 being the largest. By applying the pipe jacking method, interlinking tunnels with section lengths in excess of 1,100 m are constructed. USAGE OF THE EMSCHER OVER TIME The 85-km long river Emscher flows right through the Ruhr District. It has its source to the east of Dortmund and flows into the river Rhine near Dinslaken (Figure 1).The Emscher has been used to dispose of wastewater since industrialization began about 200 years ago. Intensive coal mining over the years led to considerable subsidence causing stagnant sewer areas which in turn led to typhus and other deceases. Thus in 1899, the Emschergenossenschaft was founded to create an efficient interceptor system for a catchment area of 865 km² through lining, raising and Emschergenossenschaft decided to free the waterways of the Emscher system from sewage and to improve them in ecological terms by 2020. A budget of 4.5 billion euros was earmarked for this purpose.The construction of sewer conduits began in order to no longer transfer the wastewater into the Emscher. The currently ongoing construction of the “Emscher Interceptor” - the main sewer - represents the heart of the Emscher conversion project. The interceptor will run along the river over a length of 51 km. Three pumping stations are required to confine the sewer’s depth to elevations between 15 and a maximum of 40 m below the surface. Since early 2012, the Emscher has been free from wastewater east of the Dortmund-Deusen clarification plant. There are two further clarification plants situated along the Emscher, which treat the still contaminated river water down-stream. Once the Emscher Interceptor is in operation, they will receive wastewater solely from the tunnel system."

The recent development of rare earth permanent magnets has revolutionized the field of magnetic separation. The advent of rare earth permanent magnets in the 1980's provided a magnetic energy product an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional ferrite magnets. This has allowed the design of high-intensity magnetic circuits operating energy free and surpassing the strength and effectiveness of electromagnets. New applications and design concepts focused on the mineral and metal processing industries have evolved. This technology also led to the development of various magnetic separators specifically designed for mineral processing applications. Applications which were not previously considered are now being applied to primary mineral upgrading and recycling and secondary recovery.

Its mission is to promote responsible and sustainable mining among new generations while fostering a culture of equality and respect. This comprehensive educational program integrates sustainable development goals and includes workshops led professionals and external experts who share their personal stories to inspire students from rural and urban educational institutions to follow their dreams. Additionally, for this year 2024, the project development and implemented an interactive mobile application that educates users about the use of minerals in everyday life through four levels: Minerals in the Home, Minerals in Medicine, Minerals in Transportation, and Minerals in Agriculture. This multi-faceted approach seeks to raise awareness about the importance of mining in Peru’s economic, environmental, and social development, ultimately fostering a new generation of informed and engaged citizens who understand the vital role of mining in a sustainable future.

The design and planning for the construction of a new passageway to improve access and circulation to better accommodate anticipated increased passenger flow within Grand Central—42nd Street Station. The passageway includes the break-in of an over 100-year-old station cavern with an innovative design implementing a protective structure above the existing track to allow for safe train operations and passenger circulation during construction. Construction of the new passageway follows the Sequential Excavation Method. This paper will present the innovative solutions that went into the preliminary design and planning considering construction access, site logistics, risk management, structural retrofitting, instrumentation and monitoring, and impact assessments.

INTRODUCTION The process of solid-liquid separation can be an important decision in plant design. It is very important that one must consider not only the most effective means of solids-liquid separation, but also to consider the effects on upstream and downstream processes. A solid-liquid separation is done either to remove the solids £ran the liquids as in copper concentrates or rave a liquid from the solids as in uranium operations. In either case, washing can be an important consideration to clean the solids or recover the liquids. This section will deal with solid- liquid separation other than thermal, sedimntation processes, or hydro cyclones. The three major areas discussed are pressure filters, vacuum filters, and centrifuges that are most cannon in the minerals industry. PRESSURE FILTERS Pressure filters are one common type of solid-liquid dewatering devices. There are my different types of pressure filters that are both continuous and batch operations. They are characterized by using an external pressure to push or force the slurry through porous media to force the liquids out of the solids. Whereas vacuum filters are limited to one amsphere or bar working pressure, some types of pressure filters operate as high as 16 bars pressure. Pressure filters are also effective for hot slurries where a high boiling point can be a problem or precipitation occurs under vacuum. The types of pressure filters most common in the mineral processing industry include plate and frame and recessed plate filters. Some of the new technologies including automatic pres- sure filters and belt presses are also discussed. Plate Frame Filters Plate and frame filters are one of the oldest and most effective means of both dewatering solids and clarifying liquids. Plate and frame filters consist of a skeleton that is used to hang or support alternate plates and frames that are pressed together to form chambers. "Foreword by Ren BryceSenior engineer, Freeport-McMoRan, Oro Valley, AZ, USAThe eighth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the national SME Annual Conference & Expo in Denver, CO. A total of 33 students presented their work at the poster competition. The competition started in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes.The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the competition. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. The first-place winner receives $1,000; the second, $500; the third, $250; and the fourth through seventh, $200. All remaining students receive $100. All of the students also receive a complimentary ticket to the MPD Luncheon. The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation located near Beulah, North Dakota. As part of the mining process, Coteau removes and replaces thin layers of suitable plant growth material (SPGM) generally ranging in thickness between one and five feet. Historically, tractor-scrapers completed this work; however, rising tractor-scraper costs and increasing haulage distances sent Coteau in search of a lower cost method resulting in the acquisition of a backhoe/truck fleet in 1995.

The centre of the mining operations of the International Nickel Company, Ontario Division is Sudbury, a city of 160,000 population located 240 miles northwest of Toronto (Fig. 1). Within thirty miles of this city and located around the rim of the geological formation known as the Sudbury Basin are the ten underground mines and one open pit operated by the Company (Fig. 2). There are also four developing mines, three in the Sudbury area and one at Shebandowan, near the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario and approximately 150 miles north east of Duluth, Minnesota. In 1971 the mines produced 22,800,000 tons, 20,600,000 tons from underground and the balance from open pits. Also located in the Sudbury District are facilities to extract and refine the metals contained in the ore. There is a nickel refinery located at Port Colborne on Lake Erie. An additional nickel refinery is under construction near Sudbury. Fifteen elements are recovered from the Sudbury ores, nickel, copper, iron, sulphur, gold, silver, cobalt, tellurium and the six platinum group metals, platinum, palladium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium and osmium. This article deals with open pit mine planning and a computer technology known as Direct Block Scheduling, or “DBS”. This is an emerging technology for modeling mine exploitation strategies using mixed-integer linear programming. This technique has proved to yield stronger economic results compared to the Lerchs-Grossmann (“LG”) algorithm currently used at the beginning of the mine planning process. The article briefly describes the shortcomings of current practice; then, this delves into the superior results obtained by DBS technology compared to current practice. Finally, the article argues that results achieve so far by DBS could be enhanced even further. To do this, the framework to apply this emerging technology, which is also used in current practice, should be modified to better exploit the capabilities of DBS technology. To better understand this change, an illustrated case study is presented at the end of the article.

Loki Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. is developing the Brewery Creek Mine, an open pit heap leach gold mine, 55 km East of Dawson City in Yukon, Canada. Mineable reserves are 17.1 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 24.8 tonnes (797 000 oz) of gold. Ore processing will employ a cyanide heap leach using run of mine ore. Permitting this mine has drawn significant attention because the heap leach technology, while proven in other jurisdictions, has not been used in Yukon. Engineering design of the heap leach was similar to that for heaps in more temperate climates, with the added issues of permafrost and cold weather operations. Solution balance with seasonal placement of ore and year -round leaching requires very large pond capacity for spring thaw conditions.

Following an in-depth scenario and strategic planning exercise in 1997, Noranda's mine production goal was set at 500,000 tonnes per year of both copper and zinc metal within five years. There had been no recent discoveries, reserves were shrinking and things had to be done differently and quickly. Change is now continual in our program but here is what we did first: Combined the exploration and business development groups Formed teams to search for and respond to opportunity Made our geologists more business minded and our engineers more optimistic Went global Set clear thresholds, farmed out the marginal properties, fast tracked the others Focused reconnaissance exploration where we had a clear competitive advantage Became a "flexible" partner to both juniors and seniors Is it working? A number of successes, near successes, and outright failures are discussed. The main result is a much higher rate of opportunity flux which is essential for success in the mining industry.

The Bond International Gold (BIG) Colosseum Gold Mine was discovered in 1865, but no recorded production occurred until the 1930's, with production approximately 19k9 (615 oz) of gold. The mine was closed in 1942 as a non-essential industry during World War II. The property was acquired by Dallhold Resources in mid 1986. Construction of a 1.1 million Mt carbon-in-pulp, cyanide mill started in November, 1986, and was completed in September, 1987. Minable reserves are estimated to be 9,560,831Mt (10,539,000St), with an average grade of 2.1 g/Mt (0.062 oz/st). This paper describes a general view of process flow and plant equipment, as well as a look at the maintenance and operational problems encountered in the fist six months of operation.

The results of a previous basic study of the flow and design characteristics of the hydrocyclone has shown that a recovery as high as 99% with a product rating of 0.95 can be achieved on a "batch?2 basis with a single, water-only cyclone if it is configured properly. The next logical step was to demonstrate continuous processing of gob for the efficient recovery of coal by means of a laboratory-size demonstration system. A project to design and construct such a single-cyclone system was also sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. A recovery of 93% with a product rating of 0.89 was demonstrated. The system design and the data taken are discussed.

The third edition of the Underground Construction Association of SME?s (UCA) Cut-ting Edge series of conferences focused on a challenge every underground construction and tunneling project faces: controlling ground water. The conference, held in New York City in November, is a partnership between the UCA and The North American Tunneling Journal. It featured more than 20 technical presentations by professionals from around the world. Each described specific challenges unique to their projects and the solutions employed. More than 175 professionals attended the two-day conference that included an exhibition featuring 17 companies. In addition to the technical program, the Cutting Edge conference featured a site visit to the $10.4 billion East Side Access Project. Sponsors of the meeting included Soil Freeze, Traylor Bros., Kiewit, Skanska, Moretrench, Aecom and The Robbins Co.
