Short Historical Review Tunnelling in Germany is as old as it is in other industrial countries. Until the middle of this century German contractors had no chance to work continuously in this business except if they were operating internationally. Since 1960, however, tunnelling has been a growing market domestically. The reasons for this growth have been both in the growing demand of traffic routes and also in an increasing environmental consciousness, which tries to transfer any cause of disturbance underground. Tunnelling engineers of course don't complain about this trend. As almost every German city is built upon water-bearing soft ground, shields have been used soon after they were first successfully utilized in Great Britain and the United States. Until the seventies lining systems for shield tunnels were predominantly either cast iron segments or concrete segments for primary support combined with different sealing systems and a secondary concrete lining cast-in-place. Steel ribs and timber lagging for primary support has not been utilized in Germany, since the owners don't accept timber to be left in the ground. In 1973, for the first time, permanent linings were constructed with watertight segment rings of precast concrete (Fig. 1). This lining was developed as an economical solution for use with slurry shields in noncohesive, water-bearing soils that required an immediately watertight lining. On July 1, 1999, most domestic metal mines will have to report releases of toxic chemicals into the environment for the first time as required by SARA Title 313. Some of these reportable releases will appear huge in relation to reports by other industries. The reasons for the potentially large reportable releases, special considerations for mining operations, and strategies for dealing with the reports are described. Data composited from experience with several mining companies is presented in the context of a typical gold mine.

A long recognized goal in high speed tunneling and mining has been the development of a continuous drill and blast excavation capability. Both the advance rate and the economy of drill and blast tunneling can be significantly improved if the conventional cyclic process can be carried out continuously. Obviously, any continuous drill and blast tunneling machine must be an "all function" device, performing drilling, explosive loading, initiation, mucking, ventilation, roof support (if necessary), and perhaps other functions, essentially simultaneously, while remaining at the face throughout. Furthermore, such a machine must do all these things under remote control. THE SPIRAL BLAST PATTERN Several continuous drill and blast tunneling concepts have been proposed. Of these the Rapidex spiral blast pattern, taking advantage of a partially self-shielding geometry, seems to require the least shielding and hence offers the maximum access for mucking, although from the outset it was clear that remote mucking would present a major design challenge. The Rapidex continuous spiral blast concept uses an unusual blasting pattern that, under the geological conditions tested, has proven to be an effective and efficient means of fragmentation. The concept has a self-shielding characteristic which permits a lightly shielded machine to remain at the face during blasting. The pattern produces a spirally proceeding tunnel face, much like one turn of an auger. The leading portion of the spiral surface is connected to the trailing portion by an axially extending plane surface or bench. The ideal geometry is illustrated in Figure 1 for a horseshoe tunnel section.

Ever since the introduction of the first successful continuous mining machines some twenty odd years ago, there has been an obvious, and steadily increasing, need for some form of continuous haulage machine, or system to work with them. There is universal agreement that the continuous mining principle, and the various continuous mining machines in particular, have done a great deal for mining. However, coal mining men, who have the longest and broadest experience with them, agree that continuous miners do not truly mine continuously. In fact, their estimates, and actual studies, show that the real mining time of these machines ranges, on the average, from 20% or less to about 30% of the available shift time. Part of the failure of the continuous mining machine to mine continuously may be ascribed to breakdowns in its intricate machinery. Most of the failure, however, is blamed on a variety of other factors. Of these, there are two which are given particular blame: face haulage and roof control. The relative importance of the two as the major negative factor in continuous mining is a moot point. However, there is an extensive concensus that haulage is the number one problem. Roof problems and their control are inhibiting factors regardless of the type of mining or mining machines employed. But the truth of the matter is that a continuous mining machine, like any type of loading machine, whether underground or on surface, is only capable of mining or producing in direct ratio to the mineable, or loadable, material that can be kept ahead of it and equally, if not more, important, that can be taken away from it. Since start-up in 1985 the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170 g Au/tonne (5 oz Au/ton) flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processed have been investigated to economically produce dore' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes recent laboratory and pilot scale test work utilized in the process design and engineering feasibility study of a 73 tonne/day (80 ton/day) pressure oxidation and CIL facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of vertical autoclave units operating at 170°C (338"F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

The integration of the ESZ orebody and DOZ orebody resulted in a much larger footprint than the original DOZ Mine shape. The significant change in footprint geometry presented new cave front management challenges, specifically: longer undercut drifts. Using a constant blasting rate, more time is required to complete caving in each drift which ultimately influences the number of active faces at any point in time. The number of manageable active drifts is controlled by the planned square-meters of undercut blasting, lead/lag restrictions and other specific conditions such as the need to blast pre-charged explosives. In early 2008, an evaluation of the existing plan showed that significantly more active undercut drifts and longer cave fronts would occur in the next five years. Difficulties associated with the long cave fronts led to a decision to redesign the caving sequence. Several different boundary options based on operational, geotechnical and ore grade parameters were investigated. This paper describes the issues faced with long cave fronts, the constraints and requirements to effectively manage the caving sequence and the options considered to mitigate this situation.

The ability to assess, address, and predict mining-induced stress distribution is paramount in maintaining a safe and efficient underground operation as coal mines continue to develop at deeper depths and in more geologically complex reserves. This is especially true for longwall mining operations given their limited flexibility in panel layout and orientation. This paper focuses on ground behaviors and conditions observed at two deep-cover, steeply dipping longwall mining operations in Utah’s Unita coal basin. This region is susceptible to coal pillar bump/bounce events as a result of high depth of cover, high-extraction mining, and the close proximity of a thick massive stiff sandstone stratum to active mineworks. The successful prediction of mining-induced coal bump events for Mine A and Mine B operating in the Unita basin has prompted mine management to develop a rock mechanics testing database for reserve calculations. The database is applicable to mine planning as well as the development of multiple numerical models to proactively identify and address adverse ground conditions using input parameters calibrated to site-specific behaviors and conditions. For both Mine A and Mine B, the most critical question relates to longwall development and recovery for “extreme” deep-cover longwall panels at overburden depths greater than 600 m. This paper highlights the impact of high-stress concentrations associated with deep-cover longwall mining as well as the methods applied to mitigate stress impacts on miner safety and longwall production.

The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) Project in Toronto will extend approximately 10.5 km and be lined using a precast concrete segmental tunnel liner with an internal diameter of 6,300 mm and external diameter of 6,900 mm. The CBT liner was grouted through ports drilled in the segments. The Westerly Storage Tunnel (WST) in Cleveland will extend approximately 2.93 km long and will be lined by using a similar precast concrete segmental tunnel liner with an internal diameter of 7,620 mm and external diameter of 8,230 mm. The WST liner was grouted using both grout ports built into the tail can of the TBM and through segments. Each tunnel was mined primarily in shale with varying levels of weathering and both tunnels had dry and wet sections. This paper will document the means and methods for grouting in each tunnel as well as the methods utilized to proof grout and the results found.

With the inauguration of the open pit operation in Bagdad, plans were formulated for a large scale leaching operation. Dump stockpiling was started almost immediately, but actual production was not initiated until the spring of 1961. Like all neophytes, we started something about which, on a commercial scale, we knew next to nothing, either dump preparation or leach procedure, and as a consequence, we are still paying the piper. True, we had been through an extensive laboratory pilot program, but it soon became apparent that there was considerably more to increasing solution volumes than simple multiplication. Had we initially possessed our present acumen, the Cyprus Bagdad plant could be operated more efficiently and at a better profit. During the past several years, the art of dump leaching of copper has improved in many ways, primarily because of the application of scientific principles gleaned from general mining practice. Rigid pH control and the use of atomic absorption techniques for rapid," accurate assaying have probably played a leading role in this respect, although we cannot overlook the other sophisticated electronic controls lending improvement to acid addition and pumping, better piping materials, and lastly, the more efficient use of our pregnant liquors. Thin too, the years of experience have given us a greater understanding of dump behavior in general; and, we can, to a greater extent, measure, predict, and avoid some of the idiosyncrasies inherent in every dump. However, it is my firm belief that we will still be confronted with unexplainable dump behavior as long as we are involved in leaching. We have found our dump to be a wonderful money bank, but one that is capable of yielding a wildly fluctuating profit.

Optimizing a production schedule with semi-mobile in-pit crushing & conveyance (IPCC) requires integrating extraction sequence, destination policy, crusher relocation, conveyor layout, and truck fleet investment decisions. An integrated stochastic optimization framework is proposed to produce long-term schedules for mining complexes using multiple semi-mobile IPCC systems. The optimizer selects the crusher locations and designs the conveyor routes from anywhere in the mines. The stochastic framework considers simulated multi-element orebody realizations and manages associated risk. A hybrid metaheuristic based on simulated annealing and evolutionary algorithm is implemented for the optimization. The method is demonstrated using an iron ore mining complex.

Process development is one of the principal tasks required in the course of turning an exploration discovery into a mine. Exploration geologists should have an understanding of the more important metallurgical processes and the test work required for each process. The paper discusses the important metallurgical processes, the test work and sample requirements for each, and the costs and time requirements to accomplish the testing. The limitations of reverse circulation drill samples for metallurgical testing are discussed. The level of process definition required to support engineering studies: scoping, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies are also described.

Coal is a major source of energy in the U.S. and more than 51% of the electricity used in the country is generated from coal. Coal cleaning prior to combustion is necessary and often accomplished using wet physical processes at coal preparation plants to remove impurities such as ash, sulfur, mercury. However, the resultant clean coal product still contains a significant amount of impurity due to the fact that impurities are not well liberated from coal particles ranging from several millimeters to inches in size at which wet cleaning processes take place. A cleaner coal product can be obtained if a cost-effective dry process is developed to further clean pulverized and thus better liberated fine coal at the power plants prior to its combustion. The benefit of such a process is a significant reduction in the cost of expensive post-combustion chemical cleaning processes such as flue gas scrubbing employed to meet the stringent environmental air quality regulations. In this study, a novel rotary triboelectrostatic separator (RTS) was investigated for its application to dry cleaning of fine coal samples acquired from the power plants in the state of Illinois. The pulverized fine coal contains well liberated ash and pyrite minerals and is an ideal feed to the triboelectrostatic separator for further cleaning without the use of water or any chemical reagents. The proprietary rotary triboelectrostatic separator (RTS) is characterized by an innovative high efficiency rotary charger, charger electrification, laminar air flow, and specially designed electrodes. Compared to existing triboelectrostatic separators, the rotary triboelectrostatic separator offers significant advantages in particle charging efficiency, solids throughput, separation efficiency, applicable particle size range, etc. Testing with several fine coal samples has demonstrated that this technology can significantly reduce ash content with a process efficiency similar to or better than froth flotation. Important process parameters such as charger rotation speed, injection and co-flow rate, feed rate were investigated for their effects on separation performance.

The development of long term plans and schedules for strip mines now faces many companies, especially those developing large properties in the West. The rule of mining the lowest strip ratios first, while delaying equipment acquisitions and recouping investment the fastest, creates the situation where stripping ratios are too high in the latter years of mining operations. A program concept taking life of mine return on investment into account is developed in this paper to optimize mine scheduling and equipment acquisition. In addition, quality considerations (heat content, ash, sulfur, washability) can be considered by including the appropriate blending constraints to meet contract requirements.

Lithium raw materials usable with present technology consist of pegmatite ore and surficial evaporite brine. Those advantageously located now supply world markets. Materials of similar grades and magnitude, but less favorably located, will come into production as present sources are depleted and markets expand. Some of these potential supplies have been explored, and are reserves in the sense of known availability and quality. Reserves herein are of two classes, those proved by close drilling and assaying, and those of only probable status because their scale and grade are unsystematically indicated. Possible resources include similar materials whose bulk can only be inferred on indirect evidence. All figures apply to total materials in the ground. No allowance is made for losses in mining, evaporation, beneficiation, or chemical processing.

"1 INTRODUCTION With a land area of 718 square kilometres housing a population of slightly over 5.4 million, as of 2014 (Department of Statistics Singapore 2015), Singapore is a highly urbanised city. Transport infrastructure is critical to keep the country and economy highly connected and functional as the population in Singapore continues to grow. The importance of a robust transport infrastructure is recognised by the Ministry of Transport in Singapore, which is working towards bringing 8 in 10 households within a 10-minute walk of a train station by 2030 (Ministry of Transport 2015). This gives rise to the rapid expansion of the rail network in highly urbanised Singapore, resulting in more tunnelling work having to be carried out in closer proximity to existing buildings. Such tunnelling work is expectedly more challenging and complex, and if not managed effectively, will impose higher risk to the adjacent buildings. Hence, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has implemented specific control measures to mitigate such tunnelling risks and to ensure safety of the public. 2 CHALLENGES FACED BY TUNNELLING WORK IN SINGAPORE 2.1 General Challenges of Tunnelling in Singapore With the increasing densification of the rail network in a highly urbanised setting, rail projects in Singapore are faced with several key challenges. One such construction challenge is constrained construction sites brought about by network intensification. Alongside the growth of the rail network, shown in Figure 1, other infrastructure networks in Singapore are also continuously growing. Underground interchange stations between networks become increasingly common, forcing each underground interchange station to be constructed deeper and in closer proximity to existing buildings (Figure 2). Singapore is not alone in facing this issue. The same can be observed in cities like London, in which its myriad network of subway lines pushes new lines and interchange stations to be constructed deeper."

Presently, the 466km Tohoku Shinkansen linking Tokyo and Morioka and the 270km Jyoetsu Shinkansen linking Omiya and Niigata are under construction. It is progressing smoothly and 95% of the civil and architectural construction has already been completed.

Unlined water tunnels have often been used as pressure conduits for hydroelectric projects. However, fallouts of rock in such tunnels are not uncommon and in many cases have been attributed to erosion of shears and seams. A case history of such a fallout is described. An appraisal of the conditions pertaining to the fallout led to the conclusion that rapid changes in the water pressure in the tunnel resulting from operating conditions were significant factors in initiating the fallout. Other factors that contributed to the fallout are also described.

A rational approach for the design of fully grouted bolts in underground excavations is presented. An analytical model involving elasto-plastic concepts and the mechanics of bolt/ground interaction was developed and tested by comparison with laboratory tests and field measurements. The theory elucidates the influence of shear stress distribution, bolt pattern and geometry on tunnel convergence. Laboratory simulation has provided convincing evidence to support the theoretical predictions. A dimensionless bolt efficiency parameter is introduced as a design tool that relates the reduction of tunnel convergence to the bolt length and density. Its application in practice is highlighted by the analysis of one case history.

INTRODUCTION Background Early in 1972 our firm was asked by Cominco, managers of Arvik Mines Limited, to carry out an underground exploration programme referred to as the "Polaris Project" on a zinc-lead deposit in Canada's High Arctic. We had carried out numerous projects in the far north but this was to be the first long decline driven in perma-frost. Despite the short notice it was possible to meet the quickly approaching summer shipping deadline. We were able to do this by drawing heavily on our own and Cominco's background in Arctic operations. The project was an excellent example of owner-contractor co-operation and this spirit was responsible for the success of the project. Unusual Aspects There were a number of unusual aspects of the Polaris Project which are discussed in this paper. The extremely remote location, the short shipping season, and the fact that the work was carried out in permanently frozen ground, when combined with the lack of handy fresh water and a very severe climate, make it unique in many respects. Despite these handicaps, a record was set during the driving of the exploration decline.

"Man-Made Parameters" refers to the importance of selecting appropriate analytical procedures to acquire useful chemical data. The correct procedures are particularly critical at the sample preparation stage where decisions concerning pulverizing equipment, sample size, contamination and dissolution will impact on the final results independent of the instrumental method of analysis. Several experiments were designed to quantify the impact of these approaches.
