Prior to the commissioning of the Sansu Sulphide Treatment Plant (STP), Ashanti Goldfields' treatment facilities were capable of producing some 700 000 ounces of gold per annum. Ore sources were underground refractory sulphides, surface oxides and old tailings dams. In order to increase the mines production to 1 million ounces per annum and to accommodate the change in ore sources as surface mining moved into fresh sulphides, a part of the strategy adopted was -the construction of a new sulphide treatment plant with a capacity to mill 2.2 million tonnes per annum and produce 400 000 ounces of gold. The STP has been designed, built and commissioned. and has been in operation since February 1994. The Plant boasts the world's largest Bio-oxidation facility which is capable of treating 790 tonnes of sulphide concentrate per day at a grade of 11.4% sulphur and is currently undergoing an expansion to increase its capacity to 1050 tonnes per day. The following sections describe the reasons for selecting the BioX® Process, the plant design, the commissioning experience and the plant performance to date.

The gold-silver deposits of the northern Primorye region are located in the eastern part of the East Sikhote-Alin volcanic belt, where the belt overlaps the Kema island-arc terrain of the Aptian-Albian age. There have been four deposits and numerous mineralization points found in the NE-trending Kema metallogenic belt that is about 1000 km long and 100 km wide. The known mineralization is of epithermal type, controlled by faults, and concentrated in quartz, quartz-fluorite-adularia, and, less commonly, sulfide-quartz vein systems hosted by the Upper Cretaceous-Lower Tertiary volcanic rocks. The vein systems extend for hundreds meters along strike, varying from tens centimeters to 50-60 meters in width. They are surrounded by wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration containing some gold-silver mineralization for which the commercial value was not studied during the early exploration. The ore bodies contain from 1 to 50-80 ppm of Au and from 1 to 1000 ppm of Ag. Gold is native, associated with quartz, and represented by particles from tens of microns to 1 mm in size. Silver occurs in native form as a constituent of argentite, pyrargyrite, stephanite, and other sulfosalts. The test work carried out for three vein systems 20 years ago showed that gold might be easily and almost completely recovered from the ore by cyanide treatment. The paper describes the geology and mineralogy of the deposits, Salut and Primorskoye, that are the most studied properties of the Kema belt. It also presents the data available on disseminated gold-silver mineralization in stockworks, altered explosive breccias, and wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration. This mineralization should be explored for possible exploitation as large open-pit, heap-leach deposits.

"The Cityringen project foresees the construction of a new circular metro line in and around the city center of Copenhagen. Both drives, the north and the south one, required the TBMs to be equipped in order to cope with contaminated water table and soil. The north drive mined in water contaminated with chlorinated compounds, including chloroform and vinyl chloride, while the south TBMs excavated in a highly benzene contaminated area, becoming the first TBMs to complete such a challenge. Despite the pollution and the stricter operative procedures, the production has been extremely successful with record up to 520 m in one month and 32 m in one day. 1 INTRODUCTION The Cityringen is an extension of the existing metro line. The 15 km long twin tunnels will form a new circular line with 21 new stations (17 + 4 crossovers). When finished it will interchange with the existing metro, rail and bus infrastructure at key locations around town, taking 90% of Copenhagen citizen at less the 600m from a metro station (Figure 1). The Contract has been awarded in April 2011 to the Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT), a joint venture between the Italian companies Salini Impregilo, Tecnimont and Seli SpA. Tunnels are being excavated with 4 Seli-Kawasaki EPB TBMs, two of which manufactured in Denmark by Seli Tunneling Denmark ApS, which is also operating them. At the moment this article is written 50% of the tunnels have been completed and over 40% handed over for the electromechanical works. Seli Tunnelling Denmark is a Danish company constituted in 2012 as a subsidiary of Seli SpA for this project and subsequently acquired by the Salini Impregilo Group in 2015."

"This paper takes an in-depth look at the $72 million design-build Norris Cut project, which includes the replacement of an existing 54-inch waste water sewer main to Fisher Island under the Norris Cut Channel. Tunneling through one of the country’s most unpredictable geologies created unique challenges in both the design and construction phases of the project. The paper presents the geotechnical and structural design considerations for the 100-foot deep secant piled TBM launch shaft in the highly permeable Fort Thompson formation limestone and sands. The structural design effort also included the design of the tremie slab, thrust wall and design of the largely unreinforced launch shaft to resist asymmetric loading from partial ground freezing. The retrieval shaft was designed as a deep soil mixed shaft and is thought to be the deepest soil-mixed shaft in Miami. From a construction perspective, this paper discusses the unique challenges of building two shafts with two different techniques and will compare some of the constructability aspects, costs and equipment schedule-considerations related to the use of two separate techniques. INTRODUCTION Nicholson Construction Company (NCC) was awarded a $72.1 million Design-Build contract to replace an existing force main from the Virginia Key Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant (CDWWTP) under the Norris Cut Channel to Fisher Island. The location of the project is shown in Figure 1. The project involves replacing an existing 54-inch diameter pre-stressed concrete sewer force main with a 60-inch diameter fiberglass force main. Arup USA, Inc. (Arup) is the lead designer for Nicholson on this design-build project. Arup is providing design services for the TBM launch and retrieval shafts, segmental tunnel lining, the fiberglass pipe, and the horizontal directional drill component. Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department currently owns and operates the existing 54-inch sanitary force main that transmits sewage collected from Miami Beach and Fisher Island to the CDWWTP for treatment and disposal. The existing force main was subject to a condition assessment in December 2011 which revealed structural deficiencies in the pre-stressed concrete pipeline."

"Stretching from Norway’s capital, Oslo, to the city of Ski, a new railway line is under construction with a 20 km long hard rock tunnel. This is a major project with high demands regarding quality, cost and schedule. In addition, restrictions concerning locations close to sensitive urban infrastructure require execution with the highest level of precision and expertise. The new double track railway line forms an important part of the intercity rail development southwards from the capital and includes the longest railway tunnel to date in the Nordic countries. With its novel methods and solutions, this project offers a model for future railway project developments in the region. This paper provides general pertinent details and facts relating to this current railway project and includes a description of the project with information relating to concept and design of the tunnels, geological conditions, particular challenges, selected tunneling techniques and contracting strategies. THE FOLLO LINE PROJECT The Follo Line is a new 22 km long double track railway line under construction between Oslo Central Station and the city of Ski. The project is divided into four subprojects, as shown in figure 1. The main part of the project consists of a 20 km long hard-rock tunnel, which will be the longest railway tunnel in the Nordic countries to date.The Østfold Line is the existing double-track railway line running between Oslo Central Station and Ski serving 12 local stations. The new Follo Line will offer a direct service, without stops, between Oslo Central Station and Ski and reduce the travel time from 22 minutes to 11 minutes. After completion of the Follo Line, these two railway lines will, in combination, more than double the capacity for train transport in the region south-east of Oslo."

Manganese nodule projects were quite fashionable during the 1970s. At the beginning of the 1980s, low metal prices led to an almost complete reduction of such activities; however, the Law of the Sea incited the countries that signed it to build a strategy for this ocean resource. Gemonod was created in France in 1984 with a four-year mission. This paper presents the results of its program devoted to the technical and economic studies of nodule exploitation. A commercial mining system is presented. The nodules would be collected by a self-propelled miner and lifted hydraulically through a rigid pipestring. A complete optimized scenario has been built taking into account offshore mining, ore transfer at sea, transportation and processing to analyze the profitability of the project. Considering an average conservative basis for metal prices, after a deep analysis of the market, the return rate of investment of the project appears fairly interesting. These results are new and are explained in comparison with previous foreign studies. These results must not hide the innovative nature of the project nor the associated risks. This is why a mining pilot is required and has been specified by Gemonod.

If you have ever driven on the Autobahns of Western Germany, you are well acquainted with the "fast lane." There is no speed limit; there are only two lanes in the direction you are going, and if you choose to drive in the fast lane, you had better be prepared to drive faster than anyone or someone will tailgate you with a constant screeching horn until you move to the "slow lane." The prize for this mastery of the fast lane is some kind of a "macho" feeling and getting to your destination sooner than your competitor. This has some comparisons with today Is liquid-sol id separation. We've certainly had our moments in the fast lane but we've also had other countries forcing us into the slow lane at times. It can be very embarassing when someone almost runs over your back and then shakes a fist at you as you shakily scatter to the much slower and overcrowded lane. Because of necessity, there will be many new improvements and added requirements in the next decades into the 21st century and beyond. Those countries and industries that can maintain the pace in the fast lane will be successful while the others may well be relegated to the non-competitive lane. Before considering what will be the challenges in the future for competitive liquid-sol id separation performance, it would be wise to review progress over the past forty years in this area. The author has to admit his ancient age and believes he can act as an evaluator of these many advances. In Canadian underground uranium mines, bacterial leaching is being increasingly applied to low-grade ore reserves. At Denison Mines Limited uranium operations, old stopes are used as leaching vessels; these contain a leaching muck pile brought down by drilling and blasting from the back which contained a low-grade reef. The bacteria used require atmospheric oxygen to oxidize the pyritic ore. A study was initiated to evaluate the ventilation, including oxygen supply, specifically, of flood leaching stopes during their rest period. The method of ventilation investigated was a single ended compressed air system which feeds airlines laid under the muckpile and carried through the inlet pressure bulkhead. The air delivery system was tested for post- blast integrity with a sulphur hexafluoride, SF6, tracer gas technique. This was injected into the intake compressed air line and collected at the stope's borehole exhaust in grab-sampling bags. The samples were analyzed with a laboratory gas chromatograph and results provided information on the stope's airflow, average residence time, overall clearance time, volume of the airpath and the airflow distribution. The borehole exhaust was monitored by anemometer and psychrometer and indicated that the psychrometric conditions in the stope were independent of the area's ambient climate. Evaluation of the exhaust's standard gaseous composition showed the oxygen consumption of the bacteria to be independent of the investigated flow range. Field derived results are compared with computer models, theoretical predictions and laboratory investigations.

Brohm Mining Company's Gilt Edge Mine in the northern Black Hills was a surface heap-leach operation that was active from the 1980s until 1999. Financing problems and acid drainage concerns at the mine were reported in the late 1990s. In February of 1999 the Governor of South Dakota announced plans to request the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help clean up acidic water at the mine and reclaim the site. In July 1999 the parent company of Brohm, Dakota Mining, filed for bankruptcy in Canada. Because of the bankruptcy and environmental problems, the State of South Dakota intervened and began water treatment. The mine was declared a Superfund site in 2000. Hydrologic issues include the potential for acidic drainage from the site. The mine is at the headwaters of Strawberry Creek, which drains into Bear Butte Creek. About four miles downstream, Bear Butte Creek loses its discharge to swallow holes in the karstic Madison Limestone aquifer, a regionally extensive and valuable ground-water reservoir. Other concerns at the site include treatment of acidic water in mine pits and a waste rock dump.

The design of solvent extraction plants has been generally based on the assumption of steady operating conditions in both the settler and the mixer units. However, recent experience in both large and small plants has shown this not to be the case. Mixer transients include start up aqueous locking and partial phase separation in secondary mixers, which both lead to reduced plant capacity or overflow of upstream mixers. Analysis of the hydraulic pressure profiles has generated new design methods to eliminate the effects of the partial or complete phase separation. Changes to the method of specification and selection of primary and secondary mixers have been made to eliminate the onset of partial separation during operation. The observation of settler operation has shown that it is also a dynamic process, even under "steady-state" conditions. Four transient phenomena have been identified that lead to internal circulating flows, poor disengagement of fine secondary haze and erratic and high entrainment levels in the discharges. A, first approximation analysis has shown that there are significant pressure differentials within settlers, and these change along the length and with the phase separation rates. A technique to control the effects of these transients was developed that allows plant performance to be improved beyond "standard" expectations. The ultimate objective of the development work presented in the paper is to devise an appropriate method for relating powered support specification to geological conditions and mining practice, thus enabling the longwall method of coalmining to be successfully implemented throughout the varied coalfields of the world. The paper begins with a review of various methods previously used to determine support rating, each method being analysed with regard to its source, the logic and theory which constitute the method, and subsequent recommendations. An alternative approach is then proposed, the Powered supports being considered to be one of three foundations, sharing load with coal ahead of the faceline which acts as another foundation, and the waste behind the supports which acts as the remaining foundation. The load/deflection characteristics of the coal and waste, which in turn are related to geological conditions and mining practice, are shown to affect the load transfer on to and hence the specification of the powered support. In particular the characteristic of the waste foundation is shown to be affected by the caving mechanism, an alternative form to that mechanism accepted for British conditions being proposed and designated "parting-plane-controlled" caving. A finite element solution for a beam on elastic foundations was used to translate the above concepts into numerical results, these results being compared with data from Indian and Chinese operating conditions. The Indian case study examines the effect of using a conventional chock type of support in a one-web back mode when mining towards a roof break generated ahead of the face, while the Chinese case study compares measured subsidence over a longwall with "blocky" roof conditions with the model results. The comparisons are encouraging, suggesting that the approach used is worthy of further development.

The subject of this paper is broad and complex. Secondly, it is near and dear to the authors' hearts. Therefore, it doesn't seem possible to deal with every aspect of it in less space than a good size textbook. Also, if we dealt with all of the basics of feasibility studies and report preparation, we would cover a lot of material available in the literature, and would have to minimize our editorial comments. In view of these limiting realities, we have chosen to discuss selected facets of the subject, and to provide several comments which stem from our personal experiences during the past 20 years. "Think Ahead" hen someone is undergoing training to command a large ship, the following short phrase is engraved in his memory: "Think Ahead." The reason is simple enough. A battleship, aircraft carrier or oil tanker cannot change directions quickly, and if one waits to a what the other ship is going to do, there may be twisted metal and bodies scattered all over the ocean floor. The commanding officer has to use radar, forward rind aft lookouts, experience, common sense, intuition, weather forecasts, and everything else available to him to avoid trouble. Remember the USS Stark, and the fate of its captain? The fact the Stark was hit by a "friendly" missile didn't lessen the damage. How about running into a mine? Is it an excuse that no one thought about the possibility of a minefield ahead of the ship? The point is, relative to feasibility studies, that its prospective authors, and especially the commander of the efforts required to create it, must "think ahead" from the moment of their association with 4 mining activity. A computer model was used to simulate the effect of leakage through confining beds on a hypothetical in situ leach operation in an aquifer with a thin mineralized section. The simulations were used to assess economic and potential environmental implications of leakage on an in situ leach operation. Four scenarios were modeled - three representing cases with different degrees of confinement, and the fourth representing a stratified ore zone under a low degree of confinement. The model simulated the travel path and travel time of lixiviant given the hydraulic conditions prescribed in each scenario. The results show that the travel path and travel times vary by about 10% for confinement ranging from nearly impermeable (essentially no leakage) to an extremely low level (thin confinement with a permeability about equal to that of the aquifer) for isotropic aquifer conditions. The aquifer thickness contacted by the lixiviant varied from 85% to 90%. Horizontally, 55% to 60% of the aquifer was contacted. The flow paths in the stratified aquifer were reduced in the vertical direction and expanded horizontally. Forty- five percent of the aquifer thickness was contacted vertically with 88% contacted horizontally. Break- through time for lixiviant traveling at mid-depth of the aquifer increased two times when the leakage was increased from nearly zero to a value representative of thin and highly permeable confinement. Leakage affects the economics of in situ mining by (1) increasing the time required to leach out the ore, and (2) increasing the thickness of the ore zone aquifer to be restored. The potential for environmental impacts appears to be minor. In all four simulations, the lixiviant did not contact the confining strata. Restoration would be limited to cleanup of the ore zone aquifer within the thickness contacted by lixiviant and within the radius of the lixiviant that traveled farthest away from the production cell.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting a research project in cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Mining companies, and equipment manufacturers are also participating through the Colorado Mining Association (CMA). The objectives of this cooperative research project are to determine the practicality of coupling a dry exhaust conditioning system (dry system) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) to make an integrated control system, and to determine the effectiveness and durability of the integrated system in an underground coal mine. Diesel-powered mining machines must be equipped with control devices to reduce surface and exhaust temperatures to safe levels and prevent flames and sparks from being emitted to the mine atmosphere. Diesel exhaust-gas water scrubbers have been successfully used for many years but they have several disadvantages; they are large, consume large quantities of water, and require frequent maintenance to remain functional. Additionally, diesel exhaust is a source of noxious gases and particulate matter. Particulate emissions are composed primarily of small carbon particles with absorbed hydrocarbons and they are almost entirely respirable in size. Even an engine in good mechanical condition can emit up to 400 mg/cu m of respirable particulate matter. A dry system for control of diesel fire and explosion hazards, coupled to a DPF, promises to be a complete control system for diesel engines. The dry system cools the exhaust and suppresses sparks and flame with a heat exchanger and flame and spark traps. The conditioner is smaller, consumes no water, and requires less maintenance than a comparable water scrubber. The DPF uses a ceramic substrate as a wall-flow filter and is very efficient at collecting exhaust particles. Average particulate mass collection efficiency is 90%. This report describes a cooperative research project to combine the dry system with the DPF, conduct performance tests on the integrated system at Bureau and MSHA 1aboratory facilities, and conduct field tests of the system on a production machine in an underground coal mine.

Recovery performance may be measured in absolute terms or in relative ones that relate the actual mining outcome to what was expected. Consideration is possible in terms of the control exercised by the operator. The eventual mineral output is the only figure known with complete certainty. The paradox is that, while performance is judged against the sampling, the reverse also applies. The R/Efactor and its four component factors are the best overall measures of performance. The choice of equipment for sampling and mining is very important. The sampling process may introduce errors and the sample density may lead to poor mining block selection. The resulting recovery performance is most visible on a regression curve. Changes in the cutoff grade must also be taken into account to avoid unrealistic production targets. Estimation methods incorporating different mathematical assumptions and techniques may cause over-or underestimation of the grade and volume. If the selective ability of the mining equipment does not match the size of the reserve blocks, the performance will be compromised. The treatment plant efficiency, the throughput rate and the degree of bedrock clean-up also affect performance. The maximization of throughput does not yield the optimum results. Marine conditions, which are outside the operator's control, affect not only operational availability but also performance. Examples are provided from actual operations for various commodities, showing the relative magnitude of the different effects upon performance.

In attempting to assess the contributions of Antoine Gaudin to the profession which he illuminated for almost a half-century, we will need to examine a very broad canvas. He was active in three significant areas: as a teacher; in research, both through his own endeavors and those of his students; and as a consultant to the mining industry and to the Government. Beyond these specific contributions, there was the major personal influence he had on scores of students, friends, and colleagues in the profession. If a single measure of the man's contribution is to be found, it will be the extent and direction in which he influenced the practice of his profession. To find this we should examine the state of miner- al processing when he began his activities in the 1920's, the progress which has taken place over the past half-century, and the part his activities played in this advance. However, there is a provocative and broader examination which I have chosen to make instead. This is to examine the past century in mineral processing through the lives of three men who, by common agreement, stand on the heights, both in teaching and in their contributions to industry: Robert H. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart, and the man whose memory we honor this evening, Antoine M. Gaudin. Their careers, by coincidence, cover just a century. This is also AIME's first century, and the first century of mineral industry education in the United States. In fact, mineral processing itself on any significant scale in the country encompasses only a century and a quarter. BEGINNINGS OF PRACTICE IN THE U.S. Before the 1840qs, U.S. mining, except for coal and iron ore, was on a small scale and was confined to the eastern states, with processing practically nonexistent. The 1840's saw the beginning of Michigan native copper production, including ore dressing; the 18501s, iron ore production in Minnesota; and the 18601s, lead production and processing in Missouri. But the most explosive event was the California gold rush after 1848, which not only brought tens-of-thousands of fortune hunters to the West, but also catalyzed broad mining activities and processing within the following decades. The scale-dependent hydraulic properties in a fractured porphyry copper oxide deposit are investigated for relevance to In Situ Leach Mining (ISLM) design. In most well field designs, mine operators assume that hydraulic properties represent a continuous spatial function, or continuum. The problem, however, is that the representative elemental volume, the volume over which hydraulic properties are described as a continuum, is a domain (if it exists) that occurs between end members representing varying degrees of heterogeneity. At the Cyprus Casa Grande mine, transmissivity fluctuations are spatially correlated. This suggests that, at the scale of ISLM, the hydraulic process is heterogeneous, and a typical continuum representation is inappropriate for design. Alternatively, a conditional stochastic approach using the Simulated Annealing (SA) technique is deemed useful for the imaging of heterogeneous hydraulic properties. Specifically, SA preserves transmissivity extremes and spatial complexity, both necessary for accurate conditioning of a flow simulator. Also, the stochastic continuum approach provides an avenue whereby uncertainty (or risk) may be addressed. Currently, the SA weaknesses are that it is computationally time consuming and that uncertainty may increase when simulating under conditions of statistical isotropy. Recognizing that ISLM exerts a dynamic influence on hydraulic properties with time, the mine design should be re-evaluated at intervals throughout the evolution of the leaching process.

The one-dimensional mathematical model of unsteady-state heat conduction through semi-infinite homogeneous and isotropic airway walls with convective heat and moisture transfer between their wet or dry naked surfaces and mine air with time variable temperature and humidity has been developed on the basis of introduction of acceptable simplifications of description of heat and moisture transfer between rock mass and mine air. The analytical solutions for computation of the temperature distribution and surface temperature of the airway walls and floor and for calculation of water vapour pressure near the wet surfaces at given time are obtained by means of the model presented. The presented solutions are derived for general conditions and they could be easily adapted to the actual ones. Results of the model represent basis for balancing heat and moisture transfer between mine air and its surrounding in deep mines under time variable temperature and humidity of the air and enable us to solve complicated dynamic changes of mine air temperature and humidity in an airway system by relatively simple mathematical tools. INTRODUCTION The importance of unfavourable influences and the costs of condition arrangements increases with mine depth. Precision demands on the methods which predict the environmental condition changes and by which it is possible to optimize condition arragements are still increasing. Environmental conditions in deep mines are determined especially by flow velocity, barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity of mine air. Therefore new and more exact mathematical models of mine air flow through airway system and those of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and individual important sources of heat and moisture are developed. The paper presented deals with description and solution of problems of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls as the rock mass is one of the important heat and moisture sources in deep mines. There are several different approaches to the problem. In some models the moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls is not considered at all. In other models the moisture transfer is described only by certain empirical coefficients. Simultaneous heat and moisture transfer is described seldom. According to Darcy?s law, the rate of filtration should increase with increasing pressure drop across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, the driving pressure is created by the centrifugal forces applied in the free water on the surface of a filter cake. However, the pressure drop can become negative when the free water surface disappears, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In hyperbaric centrifugal filtration, this problem is overcome using air pressure to restore the pressure differential. In the present work, various mineral and coal fines have been subjected to hyperbaric centrifugal filtration tests. The laboratory tests show that the moistures of various mineral fines, such as copper and zinc concentrates, phosphate, talc, kaolin clay, and precipitated calcium carbonate, can be reduced substantially below that achieved by conventional centrifuges. Similar promising results have also been obtained with various coal fines in laboratory and pilot-scale test programs and in full-scale plant demonstrations.

The Moon Creek Reclamation Project provides a case study in the development of creative cleanup solutions for an abandoned lead and zinc mine and mill site located in northern Idaho. Innovative design features include construction of a 88,000 cubic yard combined waste containment facility on soft in-situ tailings, water-balance cap, limestone gravel drains, a geocell mattress for stability, and a below-grade scour protection berm. The stream, including a wetlands buffer, will be relocated within an existing road alignment and rehabilitated to provide trout habitat. These elements allow for the integration of reclamation and stabilization measures into an effective site design.
