INTRODUCTION The increasing price of gold and silver over the past 10 years has caused increasing activity in the exploration, evaluation and development of precious metals projects. Many of these deposits are relatively low grade and short lived which makes them economically sensitive to the major project variables such as metal price, capital cost, operating cost and of course, tonnage and grade. These deposits often have a high variability (a coefficient of variation -- o/u -- of 2 to 5) and an intermixing of ore and waste, making ac- curate ore reserve estimation difficult, especially when using traditional estimation techniques. Often, the estimation errors are not the 10-20% that we see in base metal deposits, but the errors in grade and tonnage can be as high as 50%, which can obviously have a very substantial impact on project Recent developments in geostatistics when coupled with a sound geologic under- standing of the deposit can significantly improve reserve estimates of these variable precious metals deposits. Examples will be given of actual deposits where the traditional estimates were significantly different from the mining reality. An attempt will be made to explain the applicable geostatistical tools with a minimum of geostatistical jargon and without complicated formulas. The key to improving the reserve estimates is a clear understanding of the deposit geology and especially the structural controls, the use of local estimation techniques that recognize the intermixing of ore and waste and the effect of selective mining on recoverable reserves, and the use of a global reserve estimation technique to check the results of local estimation. Geologic Controls The vast majority of gold and silver deposits being mined or developed in the western United States would be classified as epithermal deposits. These are formed by hydrothermal fluids (hot water) flowing upward through the rocks and depositing the precious metals as the fluids cool or reach areas of lower pressure or favorable chemical sites. These environments are similar to present day hot springs-type environments with some deposits being clearly associated with surface hot springs such as the Homestake McLaughlin deposit in northern California. These hydrothermal deposits can occur in sedimentary rocks resulting in deposits such as those of the Carlin district or the Jerritt Canyon deposit or the hydrothermal systems can occur in volcanic rocks forming deposits such as Round Mountain, Manhattan or Paradise Peak. The mechanisms of formation were similar in either case with the solution flow controlled by geologic structure and precious metals deposited when the conditions of temperataure, pressure and chemical environment were favorable. The gold and silver hearing solutions travel through permeable faults and fracture systems depositing the metals along these channels. The grades are often highest in the central parts of these conduits (veins) with lower grades in the surrounding rocks. An understanding of the nature, distribution and orientation of these plumbing systems is important to a realistic reserve estimate. The point to be emphasized here is that, good, sound geology in the form of geologic mapping, logging of rotary chip samples and a few carefully logged core holes can signifi- cantly improve an ore reserve estimate.

Variations in designs between belt cleaner systems are so wide that it is impractical to establish a dimensional stan- dard. The number of variables that affect the efficiency of belt cleaners is too great to assume a required number or style of cleaners for broad classifications of bulk solids or typical applications. The amount of carryback remaining on the belt is more dependent upon the characteristics of the bulk solid and the physical parameters of the conveyor system than it is on tonnage of material conveyed. Therefore, a performance-based standard is proposed. Three levels of cleaning performance are proposed: • Level I cleaning is general specified when concerns about carryback are not critical. Cleaning systems normally associated with achieving a Level I performance are single or double cleaner systems with one-piece blades undergoing poor to average maintenance. Frequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will likely be required. • Level II cleaning is generally specified when carry- back is of concern but does not create a safety or environmental problem. Cleaning systems normally associated with Level I1 performance are multiple cleaner systems with segmented blades undergoing the manufacturer's specified maintenance. Regular but infrequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will likely be required. • Level III cleaning is generally specified when con- cerns about carryback are critical. Concerns range from safety to environmental to product contamination. Cleaning systems normally associated with achieving a Level 111 performance are multiple cleaner systems in conjunction with at least one low- volume water spray. Scheduled inspection and the manufacturer's specified maintenance would have to be performed to maintain a high level of cleaning performance. Difficult-to-clean bulk materials may require the use of a washbox system with multiple cleaners using a combination of low-volume eater sprays to lubricate the cleaners and high-volume sprays to keep the washbox and discharge piping freely flowing. Further addition of a water and sludge recycling system reduces the amount of water that ends up in the product to a negligible amount. Very infrequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will be required. PURPOSE The purpose of this proposal is to propose a standard method for specifying belt cleaner systems based on user expectations and equipment performance over time. DEFINITION In bulk solids handling by conveyor belt, carryback is the material that adheres to the belt after the belt discharges its cargo. PROPOSED STANDARD Required Basic Good Practices There are a number of basic design and operating principles that are good practice for the selection, installation, and maintenance of belt cleaning systems on conveyors in order to achieve "standard belt cleaning performance over time. 1. The Belt Cleaning System shall be designed to meet the performance requirements based on the worst operating conditions and worst bulk solids proper- ties that are expected. 2. Each conveyor discharge point shall be designed to readily accept the manufacturer's recommended minimum number of belt cleaners. In addition, the discharge chute shall be designed to accept, with minor modifications, at least one additional cleaner if it is required.

A popular perception by the public and many mining claimants, is that the 1872 Mining Law provides a statutory right to mine and extract minerals from the public lands. This perception in reality, is both true and false, depending on the mining claimants' ability to meet federal and state environmental, cultural and endangered species laws. Land use decisions and proposed legislation affect exploration and development opportunities in California. It is imperative that the mining industry involve itself in the planning process to ensure that BLM decision makers are fully informed of industry's knowledge and concerns. STATUTORY RIGHTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRAINTS "No other problem has such a sense of urgency and poses as profound consequences to the quality of life and the creation and distribution of societal wealth as how we protect the environment. Certainly, the environment is the single biggest issue facing mining and mineral activities in the new decade. David S. Brown The 1872 Mining Law was passed, ironically, the same year the nation's first National Park was established. It is a perception that the establishment of Yellowstone National Park was the beginning of the United States' earliest environmental movement; brought on, perhaps, by the rapid clearing of land for homesteading purposes and, the concern that many acres of the public domain were being disposed of through a multitude of public land laws. While there was an effort being made to designate some special and unique public lands as parks for preservation purposes, environmental concern and awareness did not lead to mandatory identification of environmental impacts and appropriate mitigation until the passage of the National Environmental Policy Act in 1970. Consequently, it is not surprising that the original United States Mining Laws of 1866, 1870 and 1872 had no mention of environmental protection. There have been numerous attempts to repeal the 1872 Mining Law over the last 50 years for a variety of reasons. Currently, there is a perception by the general public, media and even some in congress, the mining industry and BLM that a change is needed. The environmental organizations want the industry to be more accountable for reclamation and post mining uses. In Tn nEnvironmental Agenda for the Future," leaders of America's foremost environmental organizations state that the mining law "includes no protection for the environment," and therefore, should be reformed. We can all acknowledge, as stated above, that the mining law, per se, requires no "protection. However, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) clearly has the authority and the responsibility to fully "protect" non-mineral resources while providing for the extraction and processing of mineral resources by private industry. There are about 13 major federal laws that have indirectly or directly amended the mining laws to require Environmental, Historic and Cultural Protection." There have been many mining law case decisions about the statutory and constitutional rights of miners to explore open federal lands, "stake a claimg" and extract minerals. What needs to be fully understood is how federal laws, as enumerated on Table 1, may affect these rights. What follows is a description of

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently initiated the Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project. This is a multidisciplinary study along the Rocky Mountain Front Range from Pueblo, Colorado, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and is designed to collect, compile, and analyze new and existing data on natural aggregate (stone, sand, and gravel), as well as water, and energy resources. To identify aggregate resources in the Front Range, a 1:500,000-scale reconnaissance map showing locations and quality of both bedrock and surficial sources of natural aggregate in the Front Range urban corridor was prepared by processing the digital geologic maps of Colorado and Wyoming. The first step of the process was to identify map units as either bedrock or unconsolidated material. Bedrock was classified according to type (i.e., limestone, granite, gneiss, etc.), which in turn was classified based on the suitability of the bedrock for use as crushed stone. Unconsolidated materials were classified according to relative age, with the older, more weathered materials being defined as less suitable for use as aggregate than younger materials. As a spin-off from the Front Range Project, the techniques developed for analyzing the Front Range geology have been modified and expanded to include all of Colorado and New Mexico. More detailed digital aggregate maps (1:24,000 scale) are being prepared in collaboration with the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS). Maps from the CGS "Atlas of Sand, Gravel and Quarry Aggregate Resources, Colorado Front Range Counties" show the distribution of potential resources of sand and gravel and provide general information about the physical properties of the resources. These maps are being digitized and merged into a single Geographic Information System (GIS) data base. In addition, the project is adding more specific information to the maps about deposit thickness, volume, and quality. This additional information is being obtained through field-characterization studies and modeling activities. The GIs data base can be displayed and queried using off-the-shelf software such as ArcInfo?, ArcView?, and Map Professional?. In addition, the USGS is developing a decision-support system to assist users in analyzing various land-use options on resource availability.

The percentage of exploration dollars flowing out of the industrialized countries continues at an all-time high, and this shift in risk money is justified (Samuels, 1990; Bosson, 1977). Clearly, the odds of discovery are greatly enhanced if exploration is pursued in an untrampled and geologically more prospective environment. Unfortunately, such major unexplored areas of the developed world are shrinking rapidly, not just because the lands have already been tested, but primarily because they have been withdrawn from exploration. Experience, however, has shown that foreign investment is not without risks. These include problems that result from working in isolated areas, a lack of infrastructure, untrained workers and an absence of a solid geological data base. While the likelihood of once-feared expropriation is now low, mining enterprises still must take precautions to gain the support of their constituencies, including a variety of governments (local, provincial and central), workers, environmentalists, cultural organizations and local landowners. Is foreign exploration worth the risk? In most cases, Yes! But maintaining tenure and long-term success in a less developed country is only likely with good planning and the use of appropriate safeguards. These include measures such as buying country-risk insurance, building multinational relationships, forming joint investments, developing a broad customer base and seeking local investors in the company (Cobbe, 1979). The primary theme of this lecture is: How a company handles its constituency is critical to long-term tenure in a foreign country. Ideally, a multinational mining company would be so effective in dealing with the local people and managing its relationship with the host government that it would become a preferred employer, preferred over its competitors and over local companies. Historical overview Our earliest ancestors lived in Africa three to four million years ago. The Paleolithic or Old Stone Age, about 500,000 years ago, marked the beginning of mining in its earliest form (Gregory, 1980; Wolf, 1984). Various types of rocks and stones were used for tools and weapons, with flint being the preferred resource for implements. Initially, these materials were collected as stones (eoliths) lying on the surface. Then they came from excavations of flint in limestone beds that were exposed in river banks or naturally occurring excavations. Later, more formal mining developed. No doubt tribes of the Old Stone Age experienced conflict over rights to eoliths, food and land. The question of who owns the land and has rights to its contents and what is fair value for extraction is still the subject of intense debate and, occasionally, open conflict. As time passed, the search for useful minerals required migration from one area to another. Later, voyages from Europe to the New World and travels to other remote regions were funded and supported by absentee investors, kings and such (Rogers, 1976). The primary objective of such funding was to obtain gold, silver, food stuffs and other commodities that could be collected from the new countries. This is still the objective of foreign investment.

Introduction A well-designed mining plan is one that minimizes cost and mining induced problems and maximizes recovery of the coal reserve. To minimize the negative effects on surface structures caused by ground subsidence due to underground mining activities, two kinds of practices are commonly employed by mine operators. One is the support technique, which leaves an area of coal unmined or partially mined beneath the structure to be supported. The other is the protection technique, which protects the structure when it is subsiding with the ground by taking advantage of the ground subsidence process (Luo et al., 1992). In designing the supporting technique, the only currently available method in the US is the one stated in the Pennsylvania Underground Coal Mining Rules (1985). However, the size of the support area designed by this method will be excessively large and result in a wasteful use of coal reserves when the overburden depth is more than 350 ft. A more scientific method is proposed in this paper for designing the support area. This method is based on a large amount of subsidence data collected throughout a number of major US coal fields and the authors' experience with monitoring and protecting surface structures that have been undermined by longwall panels. It considers the critical deformation indices that a structure can tolerate, and depth and height of underground extraction. A support area designed by this new method will not only assure the safety of the structure to be supported but will also maximize the extraction of the coal reserve. Design of support area using the Pennsylvania rules The Pennsylvania Underground Coal Mining Rules (1985) state that no underground mining activity should be permitted beneath structures where the overburden depth is less than 100 ft. An exception to these rules is provided for mine related openings that provide access to the surface for such as entries, shafts, boreholes and site-specific variances for entry development. If the overburden depth is greater than 100 ft, the mine operators should utilize either of the following: •Extraction techniques that provide for planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner, or •Support techniques designed to prevent subsidence damages to features identified as: •Public buildings and non-commercial structures [ ] customarily used by the public, including churches, schools and hospitals • Dwellings, cemeteries, municipal public service operations and municipal utilities in place on April 27,1966 •Impoundments and other water bodies with a storage capacity of 20 acre-ft or more • Aquifers, perennial streams and water bodies that serve as a significant source for a public water supply system, and •Coal refuse disposal areas. The support techniques require that a support area be left beneath the surface structure or feature to be protected (Fig.1). The support area should consist of coal pillars, with their size and pattern being such that their bearing strength is maximized. The total coal extraction within the support area should be limited to a maximum of 50%. The support area should be rectangular in shape and determined by projecting a line at a 15° angle from the surface to the coal seam with an offset distance of 15 ft from all sides of the structure. In underground operations the evaluation of blasting fume dilution times and the application of recirculation techniques require accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosive used. This paper describes a methodology for obtaining concentrations of detonation products from commercial explosives tested under typical rock confinement and looks into the development of techniques for reducing toxic gases produced by explosives. This paper also analyses the application of techniques for the removal of toxic gas which would enable reduced re-entry times, a reduction in the quantity of fresh air and the use of air recirculation techniques, thereby providing substantial economic benefits to the industry. INTRODUCTION Toxic fumes from blasting operations are among the most common and serious hazards encountered underground. The implication of high concentrations of toxic gases emitted from blasting on the mine ventilation system are very significant and, in many cases, catastrophic results have occurred. Because blasting is a routine practice underground, the mining engineer is always confronted with the problem of controlling the fumes within acceptable levels. Typical control procedures employed underground include preventing or reducing the amount of fumes liberated from blasting through the proper selection of explosives and proper blasting techniques; removing the fumes through local exhaust systems or auxiliary ventilation (dilution ventilation); blasting off-shift, or at restricted times; localizing or isolating the effects of blasting where workings are isolated or sectionalized in the ventilation system; and absorbing some of the components of the fumes using air-water sprays. Dilution is one of the most effective control measures against blasting fumes and is universally applied. However, for precise determination of the dilution times for the fumes to reach safe concentrations, accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosives used is required. Research work has been carried out in determining the types and volumes of gases produced from blasting. In the case of ideal detonations, the nature and quantity of the fumes produced can be predicted by thermo-hydrodynamic calculations. However, commercial explosives exhibit non-ideal behaviour which is enhanced by the relatively small diameters of application in underground mines. The confinement offered by the surrounding rock further complicates the situation. It is well recognized that confinement affects performance and consequently fume generation. A detailed data base of fumes generated by commercial explosives at various conditions is introduced and the effect of blasting parameters such as, confinement, shock desensitization and incomplete detonations on toxic fume production is described for a variety of commercial explosives in use today. Thermodynamic predictions on fume production by the explosive compositions tested are also presented and compared with experimental results and their significance in assessing the quantity of fumes produced is discussed. A mathematical model capable of determining dilution ventilation requirements and dilution times to reduce the fume concentrations in the blasting zone to acceptable levels has been developed and it is being incorporated into a network system so that the effects of blasting can be simulated in typical mine ventilation systems. Solutions to the problem of controlling blast fumes within acceptable levels are described. These solutions include the use of control procedures which prevent and reduce the amount of fumes liberated from blasting. The use of low fume explosives, proper blasting techniques, dilution ventilation and filtration can be combined to effectively control fume production and save on costs. The application of these techniques to enable recirculation of underground air with reduced quantities of fresh air requirements is evaluated in a case study.

INTRODUCTION The mining industry has been under- going a significant restructuring for the past several years. Some firms have been liquidated. Some have been merged with other firms. A number of mining divisions of larger firms have been spun off, in some cases in leveraged buyouts by management. Recently, there have been a number of spin outs of gold subsidiaries. There are also a number of start-up situations where new firms are emerging as significant gold producers through mine development or acquisition. This restructuring has created an attractive market for specialized mining finance firms, and a number of firms have recently entered that field in the United States. These firms provide financial advisory and valuation services to mining firms and project developers, and access to venture capital. In some cases, they invest for clients or for their own account. I have been asked to describe how our firm works, and what kind of information we expect to receive when mine developers seek our assistance in financing a project. HOW WE OPERATE Denver Mining Finance works for both mine developers and investors. We also provide expert advice on mining issues to governments and to firms who are in litigation over mining issues. A lot of our work involves valuing mineral interests for various purposes. Our principal expertise is in the technical, commercial, and financial area. We help put mining deals into shape commercially so that they can be financed, and we help investors get into mining deals that are commercially sound. We work on projects, but we also advise mining firms on the structure of their business and how to make the most out of one or several mines that they might own. In addition to our work for clients, we are also prepared to invest in mining projects for our own account, and to recommend gold properties for acquisition by our parent company, Royal Gold, Inc. We are, to some extent, a venture capital firm, in that we sometimes work with projects that are not "bankablerV1 and are prepared to invest in attractive early-stage situations in mining. However, I want to emphasize that our principal focus is on development of commercially attractive mining projects that can be brought into production in the best possible financial terms. If we can make a project qualify for a project loan from a commercial bank, we will not advise the developer to use high cost venture capital. For the purpose of this paper, I will focus primarily upon our functions with respect to development of precious metal projects. In a typical case, a firm with an advanced-staged project approaches us for help with financing the final feasibility study, and construction and operation of a mine. In some cases, the developer has already developed a financing plan and wants only our access to investors. If we agree that the project is sound and that the financing scheme will be attractive to investors, we will help the developer reach investors on a commission basis. In such cases, we are particularly insistent that the financing plan and our participation meet all regulatory requirements, particularly compliance with state and federal securities laws. In most cases, however, the developer asks us for advise both on how to structure the financing, and how it can be implemented. Here we work for fees based on hourly rates for advisory work,

Electronic ore sorting is a coarse particle beneliciating process which performs a function which in the past was primarily achieved through the use of hand picking belts. Photometric ore sorting is capable of separating waste from mineral bearing rock having a distinct difference in surface light reflectance levels. This type of ore sorter can be applied to gold and silver ores which are contained in quartz veining. Photometric ore sorting has been used at gold mines in South Africa as well as the Black Pinc silver mine in Montana. A new ore sorter has recently been developed with precious metal ores in mind. This ore sorter is capable of sorting ores on both photometric and conductivity sensing parameters. The first production machine has been installed at a gold mine near Beardmore, Ontario and currently is being used to process low grade waste dumps.

In many parts of the world deep level mining relies heavily on the use of refrigeration for providing safe thermal underground conditions. The trend in South Africa in recent years has been to locate the refrigeration plants on surface and to use these plants to chill water that is then distributed throughout the mine. The surface cooling installation normally consists of a pre-cooling tower in which water is first chilled before it is sent to one or more refrigeration plants for further cooling. Presently, the majority of these refrigeration plants use CFC refrigerants; however, to conform with the Montreal Protocol, these plants will have to be replaced or converted for use with alternative refrigerants. The optimum design criteria for installations using the new generation of refrigerants will be affected by their characteristics and are likely to be different from those currently in use. In light of these developments the industry is examining a number of alternative systems for future installations including water vapour refrigeration. Factors that affect the decision on the type of refrigeration system to be used in mine installations are reviewed. INTRODUCTION Gold mining has been carried out in South Africa for over 100 years and most of the reserves close to surface have been mined out; this has led to mining taking place at greater depths, approaching 4000 m below surface. One of the consequences of operating at these greater depths is that it is necessary to install refrigeration plants to cool the ventilation air so as to provide safe and healthy working conditions. With the current low precious metal prices there is pressure on mines to cut costs and in recent years there has been considerable effort devoted to the design of more cost effective and efficient refrigeration plants and cooling systems. In the last 10 years there have been many studies into the use of ice for specific applications (Eschenburg et al., 1986; Hemp, 1988 and Ramsden and Lloyd, 1992) and at present there are three ice making plants in operation on South African mines, each of which produces ice in different processes. In addition, detailed design studies have been carried out on the "split ammonia system" (Napier and Patterson, 1992). In this refrigeration system the evaporator is located underground close to where the cooling is needed, whilst the condenser and heat rejection system is on surface. As far as refrigeration plants are concerned the trend has been to move away from standard package units to custom built refrigeration installations. This has given the design engineer greater flexibility in the choice of key components for refrigeration installations. For example both screw and centrifugal compressors are used, the heat exchangers for the evaporators and condensers may be either plate or shell and tube, and in a number of installations evaporative condensers are used. In addition, the following refrigerants are in use, R12, R22 and ammonia. The acceptance of the Montreal Protocol and its amendments by the South African government will restrict the use of CFC refrigerants and it will be necessary to re-evaluate various refrigeration systems, including those that do not use conventional refrigerants, such as air cycle and water vapour systems, for new surface installations. Although new systems and refrigerants are being developed, only the following refrigeration installations will be compared in this paper: - a refrigeration system using R134a which has properties similar to R12 - refrigeration system using R22 or a new alternative refrigerant with very similar properties - an ammonia refrigeration system - a water vapour refrigeration system The benefits of new cooling systems are not discussed in detail, since they are largely mine specific and outside the scope of the present paper. Since the optimum design for an air cycle system (del Castillo, 1988) is dependent on the mine layout, this system is also not included.

Introduction Wear of pumps, wet cyclones and pipelines by suspended solid particles will impact their operating economies by limiting their useful life, reducing their reliability and increasing the amount of servicing. Erosion is considered a materials problem. The empirical solution consists of testing different materials in field applications. Such tests are time consuming and expensive. The prediction of localized wear rates, life estimates and appropriate material selection demand a better understanding of the slurry wear process in environments corresponding to those found in working equipment. Key words: Wear, Slurry abrasion, Coriolis erosion tester The slurry wear process Solid particles suspended in liquid generally move with the flow, but such particles deviate under the centrifugal and Coriolis forces encountered in pumps. The concentration of particles will increase, and a solid layer or bed may accumulate if the acceleration is directed against the flow passage wall. Large particles in dilute suspensions may impact the wall. dissipating their kinetic energies and removing material. However, particles smaller than about 11)(1 µm encounter great drag when moving through the liquid. and such par¬ticles have little kinetic energy left when they reach the wall. They cannot penetrate the stagnant boundary layers present in pumps. Therefore, small particles tend to form beds that slide along the wall, removing material by a process that could he called sliding erosion or wet abrasion. Wear by impact erosion from large particles in dilute slurries can he predicted by appropriate analytical and empirical methods. However, laboratory tests and calculations of wear rates that correspond to sliding erosion are more likely to correlate with field experience from wear under similar conditions. Specific energy Data from laboratory slurry erosion experiments have shown that the amount of material removed is approximately in proportion to the energy expended in the erosion process. Thus. the specific energy-energy expended in removing by erosion a unit volume of material-offers a simple, practical measure for the erosion resistance of materials. The concept was found to also apply to sliding erosion (Clark et al.. 1997). Generally, the study of the material-removal process in slurry erosion continues to remain a subject of research. Conceptually, if the flow velocities and accelerations could be calculated in a pump or pipeline, the energy dissipated at the passage walls could also be estimated, and the material removal rate would become known from the specific energy determined by laboratory tests. Slurry erosion testing Laboratory devices made specifically for slurry erosion testing may be grouped into the following: jet erosion devices, slurry pots and the Coriolis test machine (Pagalthivarthi and Helmly, 1992). Jet erosion devices use a slurry pump and nozzle to produce a high-velocity slurry jet that is directed at a flat material specimen, either perpendicularly or at some acute angle. Combined impact and sliding erosion are produced. but the processes cannot be separated, and the wear is difficult to assess except by weighing. Slurry pots consist of a cylindrical vessel containing the slurry of interest. In the slurry pot, test specimens are attached to a rotating arm. The samples are rotated in the slurry and experience local flow conditions that result in combined impact and sliding erosion. Wear depth measurements from detailed laboratory experiments have been successfully correlated with results from an analytical model of the process, and specific energy values have been calculated (Wong and Clark, 1995). In industrial use, the samples are weighed to determine the total material loss. Materials are ranked with respect to some reference material. The Coriolis erosion tester (Tuzson, 1984) consists of a rotor with a central cavity, from which two opposing radial passages lead out (Fig. 1). The slurry is fed to the centerof the rotor in one pass from a stirred overhead tank. The slurry particles are subjected to the Coriolis acceleration as they flow out through the radial passages. The material specimens are mounted into the radial passage walls facing the direction of rotation and are eroded by the particles that are pressed against them as they flow out radially. A narrow groove is worn into the sample within a few minutes, using a few gallons of slurry. Material removal is estimated accurately from profilometer traverses across the wear scar at different locations. The energy dissipated by the particles can be estimated, which leads to a well-defined experimental value for the specific energy.

INTRODUCTION With each passing year, the general public becomes increasingly aware of the potential hazards associated with many products and services previously considered unharmful. This new consciousness is especially evident in the workplace, both as the result of advances in scientific understanding and the influx of concerned, responsible professionals into the labor movement. For example, data produced by epidemiologists doing retrospective mortality studies which related mortality to toxic substance exposures has often been the prime motivating factor behind reductions in exposure standards. This certainly has been the historical case with many radiation exposure standards, including the limitations set for "Working Level" exposure. The concept of "Working Level" was introduced in PHS Publication No. 494 as a result of both the difficulty in relating radiation units to biological effects and the complexity of interaction of radon daughters with the physical environment. WORKING LEVEL One working level is defined as any combination of radon daughters in one liter of air that will alternately release 1.7 x 105 MEV of alpha energy during decay of 210pb (RaD). Its usefulness is that working level can be readily measured in both the field and the laboratory. Because of this, existing occupational exposure standards for radon daughters in both the U. S. and other countries use working level as their basis. In the U. S., the last twenty years has witnessed a significant reduction in radiation exposure standards from 120 working level months to 4 working level months per year. New international standards are being proposed that would be only slightly higher than these current U. S. standards. POTENTIAL EXPOSURES TO RADON DAUGHTERS The universal use of nuclear power, along with the transfer of nuclear technology to developing nations, has significantly increased the demand for fuels. As a result, uranium mining operations have expanded and increased numbers of miners are regularly exposed to radon daughters. In addition to potential exposures in uranium mines, other deep mines such as tin, gold, platinum and tungsten, also have potential exposures due to the distribution of uranium and its accompanying radium throughout much of the earth's crust. The energy crisis has also prompted interest in general population exposure to radon daughters in buildings. Many homeowners, using additional insulation and caulking to seal cracks and conserve energy, have reduced indoor ventilation to the point where working level exposure could become significant, especially in homes with unventilated crawl spaces. In fact, several serious exposure situations have occurred where mine tailings were used for building materials. MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES Historically, rapid and convenient measurement techniques have been actively sought to improve the ability of ventilation engineers to limit mining exposures through ventilation control. A number of measurement techniques have been developed, including the Kusnetz method (further elaborated by Shalaynev) and techniques developed by Rolle and Tsivoglou. All, however, suffer from similar handicaps that prevent their usefulness in the mining environment. Their main limitation, in terms of minimizing employee exposure, is the elapsed time from the start of sampling until the results can be calculated. It is usually 40 to 90 minutes. This time delay presents both serious economic limitations as well as the potential for exposing workers to high radon daughter concentrations until calculations are completed and corrections made. Further reducing the utility of the Kusnetz and Tsivoglou techniques is the need for tedious calculations that increase the possibility of human error along with the need for cumbersome sampling equipment that is not ideally suited to the mining environment. INSTANT WORKING LEVEL METER To alleviate these problems, the idea of an Instant Working Level Meter was conceived by several groups. Several such instruments were proposed, built, and tested with disappointing results. Although the concepts behind them were sound, the instruments simply failed to measure working level without excessive distortion. In addition, their cost was relatively high, gamma background presented a problem, and sophisticated computations were necessary to determine working level. In short, these systems lacked the design engineering that would make them suitable for the demands of a mining environment.

Introduction In the decades since silica gel was first identified in material exuding from cracked concrete, a great deal of research has been conducted regarding the chemical reactions between the alkalies found in portland cement and silica found in aggregates. The reaction is complex and one that is not yet completely predictable, especially from the point of view of developing specifications that are appropriate to all situations. This paper is not intended to be a rigorous review of the research findings but is an attempt to provide a simplified review of the mechanisms of the alkali-silica reaction (ASR), so that one can better understand the implications of the specifications, test results and effects on structures. In addition, the contractual relationships between the aggregate supplier and one of their major clients, the concrete supplier, will be examined with regard to the ASR. ASR basics Silica. Silica (silicon oxide) may exist in naturally occurring aggregates in various forms and in combination with a number of other elements. When the silica is completely crystalline, such as in quartz, it is chemically and mechanically stable. Quartz silica is impermeable and reacts only on the surface of the crystal, where the silicon and oxygen bonds are broken. Because the surface area per unit volume of most quartz is low, the reactivity is also low. Completely amorphous (noncrystalline) silica is, on the other hand, more porous and very reactive. The less "crystalline" the silica is in the aggregate, the more reactive. Silica that has melted and cooled quickly without recrystallizing, creating a glassy material (such as in certain volcanic aggregates), has a very low state of crystallization and will be much more reactive in an alkaline solution. Crystalline silica that has been transformed by heat and pressure may have a large quantity of strain energy stored in the crystal lattice. The presence of this higher energy will make the silica more likely to react. The "strained quartz" found in many metamorphic aggregates means that these aggregates are potentially susceptible to deleterious alkali silica reactivity, although the rate of reaction is typically much slower than with aggregates composed of or containing glassy or amorphous silicas. Another problem may exist with aggregates in which the silica is primarily crystalline. In aggregates such as chert, in which the silica exists as very fine crystals (i.e., crypto- or microcrystalline), the very high surface energies between the crystals contribute to alkali sensitivity. Therefore, the potential reactivity of an aggregate is seen to be a function of both the degree of crystallization of the silica in the aggregate and the amount of energy stored in the crystal structure, whether due to a large quantity of microcrystalline silica, a high strain energy stored in the crystals or some combination of these factors. The surface area per unit volume of the reactive silica will also affect the rate of reaction, because a larger surface area of reactive silica will have more opportunity to react. Obviously, the reactivity of the aggregate is also affected by the silica content. However, in this case, the results are not quite so obvious. A discussion of the effect of silica content will be postponed until after a discussion of the contribution of the cement paste. Paste characteristics. Hydrated portland cement is a very alkaline material with a pore solution pH typically in excess of 12. The alkaline environment of moist concrete provides an ideal place for noncrystalline or cryptocrystalline silica to react. However, not all alkalies are equal in their effects. Calcium compounds react with glassy silica to form calcium silicate hydrate, commonly abbreviated C-S-H a poorly crystalline material that can occur in several forms and chemical compositions. C-S-H was at one time called tobermorite gel, because it was chemically similar to the naturally occurring crystalline mineral tobermorite and because it had a gel-like (noncrystalline) structure when viewed under an optical microscope. The formation of C-S-H is the basis for both portland cement hydration and reaction with, for example, fly ash. C-S-H is relatively stable. Although drying will cause some shrinkage and rewetting will cause some expansion, the volume stability of the C-S-H is very good compared to the volume stability of most alkali silica gels. Alkali silica gels with high sodium contents, for example, are nonstable compared to C-S-H.

RADON SOURCES AND CONTROL MEASURES IN THE MINING ENVIRONMENT Most of the contamination of the mine atmosphere by radon 222 is due to radon emanating from solid or fractured ore surfaces of walls, roof and floor. Also radon gas emanates from broken ore either from storage in backfilled mined-out areas as applied in e.g. shrinkage stopping methods or from ore spillage along intake airways mainly due to the use of trackless haulage. To a lesser extent water itself can represent an additional source of radon, which emanates into air from open drainage ditches or seepages along intake airways. The contribution from water can be controlled effectively by isolating the water from the primary intake air system, e.g. by diverting the water through pipes and/or sealing of seepages by grouting. However, control of radon emanating from rock surfaces creates a major technical problem with significant impact on the economic aspects of mining operations, if adequate radiological conditions must be maintained. Basically this can be achieved by suppressing the emanation process itself, confining already emanated radon or by removal of radon from the mine atmosphere. Extensive research has been carried out on the rate of radon emanation as a function of barometric pressure changes (Pohl-Rüling and Pohl, 1969). It could be shown that the radon supply consists of a permanent and variable component. The former results from the surface of the rock and depends mainly on the emanating fraction of its radium 226 content; the latter originates from within the rocks and is a function of the suction effect of decreasing barometric pressure, rock porosity and fissures. The practical application of this barometric pump effect for depressing the rate of radon emanation, e.g. by pressurizing the mine atmosphere, is limited due to high costs for providing a sink for absorption of radon and air as well as lack of permeability in most uranium ore bodies (Schroeder et al., 1966). Mine air cleaning by removal of radon can be achieved with the use of cryogenic methods, chemical removal, adsorption into charcoal beds, use of a gas centrifuge or general ventilation techniques. Technical problems have so far prevented the application of any of these methods other than ventilation. It is common practice to use the age-of-air concept, i.e. fresh air is delivered to the worker as directly as possible and removed quickly afterwards thereby maintaining the air "young". Engineering principles for quantity distribution of air through underground working areas are straightforward for general mining situations where radon constitutes an environmental contamination problem. However, in cases of high uranium ore content this concept may result in high costs with regard to installation and energy requirements for effecting both frequent air changes as well as sufficient heating of the air in cold seasons. Taking into account that the investment in ventilation systems is a major cofactor for the overall ore production costs this can be a limiting and decisive component in the assessment of the economic feasibility of specific mining operations and mineral reserves in general. Effective control of the radon flux from the rock surface prevents the initial contamination of the mine air with radon directly at the source. A radon diffusion barrier for practical application in mining requirements should fulfill the following requirements: - reduction of radon emanation rate by at least an order of magnitude - high mechanical strength - ease of sealant application onto surface to be coated - water resistant - low fire hazard - resistant to temperature changes encountered in mines - high cost efficiency in relation to exposure reduction achieved (direct and indirect costs) - low degree of maintenance. In the past several materials have been tested as sealants for controlling the emanation of radon from surfaces of rock and building materials. Epoxy paints reduce radon emanation rate only by a factor of 2 to 6 (Auxier et al., 1974; Eichholz et al., 1980; Keith Consulting Engineers, 1980). Although it is possible to prevent the escape of more than 99 % of the radon to the environment with gel seals over 80 mm thick (Bedrosian et al., 1974), practical applicability is very limited. Multilayer coatings of epoxy resins with various additives require meticulous preparation and flawless application of seamless four-layer coatings in four days to impede radon diffusion (Culot et al., 1976), otherwise results from this method have not been totally satisfactory (Leung, 1978). Aluminium foil laminated with polyethylene and paper on each side is under test as radon barrier but results are not available yet (Ericson, 1980). However, this method has the inherent disadvantage that possible malfunctioning electrical installations can cause fire or electrical shock through the sealant. Polyurethane foam coatings have been used on stoppings as very effective sealants. It does, however, represent a potential danger of spontaneous ignition and it is expensive (Rock, 1975). Thus, there is still need for a material which has similar properties as outlined above. In the following results are reported from investigations on the suitability of various materials as radon diffusion barriers.

Traditional or artisanal goldmining, also known as small scale goldmining, has a strong and probably a negative environmental impact. The processing methods applied are very frequently a source of severe pollution due to the emissions of mercury by the extraction of gold by means of amalgamation as well as the emissions of cyanide through cyanide leaching of gold bearing ores. The emissions find their way into the environment and contaminate soils, sediments, water and atmosphere. Abnormal concentrations of mercury and cyanides in waterways are known to occur year after year destroying irreplaceable regions of the world. Mercury and cyanide compounds are highly toxic and may directly create permanent damage to the whole ecosystem. Existing methods for recycling of mercury and for decontamination of mercury and cyanide contaminated tailings are not customary applied in small scale mining and are ineffective as well. Based on investigations of traditional and small size goldmining, this paper presents: -processing methods of gold and discarded tailings under consideration of environmental protection; -figures on actual situation; -recommendations for equipment; -some decontamination methods for mercury and residual cyanide. Mineral Processing methods in traditional gold mining Gold is usually existing in its ores as the metal alloyed with metallic silver and perhaps copper. The element may occur in the form of: -native gold -inclusions also of microns or submicroscopic size metal sulfides (auriferous) such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, stibnite, arsenopyrite and galena -combined as telluride or sulphotelluride. The separation process selected depends on whether the gold can be freed from its unfavorable associations (e.g. gangue) at a sufficiently coarse grain-size, or whether it is carried in a heavy sulfide which can be freed similarly. The usual practice is to concentrate the goldbearing mineral at a relatively coarse grain-size and to regrind the ore if necessary. The gold content is concentrated by secondary or tertiary gravital methods or is extracted by chemical methods (amalgamation, cyanidation etc.) Gold, even when of fine grain-size, settle readily due to its high specific gravity from pulps in which the main gangue mineral is quartz or silicates. Amalgamation is the process of separating gold and silver from their associated minerals by binding (entrapping) them into a mixture with mercury. The cyanide process is applied to separate gold or gold-bearing compounds by dissolution from the finely ground ore (CIP, CIL, RIP), or as heap leaching. The dissolved gold is separated from the solids and the metal-rich or pregnant solution is then treated to recover its gold. Gold is also recovered by flotation methods. This process is widely used in treating base metal ores and in separating various sulfide components of ores, as well as in removing the barren gangue. The gold usually associates with a specific product in a sequence of flotation operations and is recovered subsequently in the smelting of the sulfide concentrates and refining of the metallic products, or by cyanidation of the roasted concentrates. Froth-flotation can be applied to separate gold and sulfide minerals from a finely ground pulp. The Amalgamation Process Amalgamation is the main method for the recovery of gold in traditional mining and is applied for the extraction of gold from placers as well as primary ores. The mineral technology used depends on the nature of ore deposits. In winning gold from solid ore, the matrix of minerals and rocks must be crushed and ground to sufficient fineness to liberate the gold. The liberated gold could be treated similar as free gold from placers. Gold is mainly separated from the valueless gangue (barren rock) by utilizing the difference between the density of the impure native metal (density about 16-19) and the gangue (density about 2.5). In simple operations the material is carried by a stream of water down a sluice generally equipped with small transverse barriers (riffles) against which the gold collects. The riffled sluice is the principal device used by artisanal gold miners. Nowadays, spirals as well as centrifuges, such as Knelson separator or Falcon separator, are occasionally applied for gold recovery. Gold may also be recovered from the pulp, by passing it over corduroycovered tables that catch the heavier particles - a method maybe as ancient as gold mining itself. Ion-exchange fibres (IEF) were prepared by the ir­radiation grafting of styrene onto polypropylene, which was then subsequently functionalized. Strong- and weak-base exchangers were prepared and evaluated Tor their ability to extract gold cyanide selectively. The IEF prepared had loading capacities similar to those of the corresponding resins and they had good selectivities for gold cyanide when contacted with a mixed metal-cyanide solution. The expected advantage of IEF over granular exchangers, that of faster kinetics, was illustrated. The strong-base Iibre in particular seemed to be very effective for the extraction of gold cyanide from dilute solutions such as return-dam waters.

In-mine Continuous Wave (CH) Radio Imaging method (RIM) instrumentation has the capability of measuring EM wave propagation constants in layered formations. The RIM method is based upon the fact that seams of coal, trona, potash, quartzite, gilsonite and oil bearing sands form natural waveguides for low loss transmission of electromagnetic (EM) waves. The waveguide forms whenever the seam is bounded by more conducting claystone, mudstone, shale or in the case of oil/gas traps, by a floor of saline water. Disturbances caused by faults, shear zones, paleochannels, sills and dikes significantly alter the propagation constant. The analytical values of the EM wave propagation constants depend on the physical and electrical parameters of the seam. The values are presented in this paper in a graphical form to assist in the interpretation of RIM tomographic images. This paper compares in-mine geologic mapping obtained during mining to tomographic images of the geologic disturbance zones in a Central Utah coal mine.

INTRODUCTION The requirement that is placed on owners and operators of underground mines to protect workers against the health hazard of inhaling radioactive materials which are short-lived decay products of 222Rn can be satisfied by applying a considerable variety of what we may call "engineering" solutions as well as a number of "administrative" remedies to the problem. The most obvious of the "engineering" approaches has always been that of forced ventilation, in which relatively clean (i.e., radon-free) air from aboveground is drawn or pushed through the mine workings by a system of fans and ducts. This relatively clean air, in sweeping through the drifts, stopes and haulageways, dilutes the radon and radon-daughter concentrations in the air of the mine, and performs the added beneficial function of removing the daughter-mixture quickly enought to limit grow-in of the longer-lived nuclides in the group that make up the "toxic trio" on which the Working Level (IM) unit is based. Effective as the dilution-ventilation method is for control of WL in most underground mining situations, however, the increasing strictness of control measures that have been imposed on the mining industry over the last two decades have demanded measures of even greater effectiveness. In times of poor markets for yellow-cake and other products of the mines, mine operators are pressed to reduce operating costs, and the installation of additional primary ventilation capacity can be a severe burden on a mine that is already laboring under an unfavorable earning power. When traditional dilution-ventilation systems alone cannot meet the requirement for WI, control, radiation safety engineers and ventilation engineers begin to look at alternatives and auxiliary methods. Since the radon which produces the toxic daughter products originates in the rock of the mine walls, and since, in most United States mines, that rock is a porous sandstone through which air can move under the effect of atmospheric pressure gradients, and through which radon can diffuse relatively freely, one way to help control the growth of WL would be to hinder the escape of radon from that reservior of porous rock. An appealing; method for hindering that natural flux of radon-polluted air from the walls of the mine has long been apparent; namely, to apply a low-permeability coating over the surface of the rock, thus sealing the radon in place and, in theory at least, preventing its escape into the mine air. Our 1970 report to the U.S. Federal Radiation Council on the subject of cost impacts of proposed changes in the occupational standards for exposure of underground uranium miners to airborne radon daughters noted the possibility of using polymeric wall sealants as a means of controlling radon-pollution of mine air. Since that time a number of reports have appeared in the technical literature advocating this technique for restraining the escape of radon from building materials, mill tailings, and other materials containing 226Ra, in addition to the surfaces of underground mine workings. During this period, some controversy has occurred over the question of the probable effectiveness of wall sealants in limiting the escape of radon from the rock. Our 1970 report speculated that flaws (cracks and "pinholes") in the coating might be all but unavoidable in practice, and that even a conservative estimate of the frequency of such flaws would lead to a prediction of ineffectiveness. Hammon et al, in a laboratory evaluation of radon sealants conducted by Lawrence Livermore Laboratory of the University of California in 1975 on behalf of U.S. Bureau of Mines, concluded that a wide variety of polymeric coatings would provide "nearly 100% effectiveness" in restrain¬ing escape of radon from mine wall surfaces if applied in "thicknesses between 5 and 10 mil" (125-250 [y]pm). John Franklin and co-workers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratories in Spokane, Washington, have carried the experiments with polymeric sealants through additional laboratory tests and into actual mine environments, reporting that selected sealants could provide attenuation of radon flux by a factor of four (75-80% reduction). Robert Bates and John Edwards of USBM developed a computer-assisted mathematical/physical model that predicts a relatively small effect of flaws in a low-permeability coating on the radon flux from a sandstone-type matrix. FIELD TEST Since all actual experimental work with wall sealants showed some beneficial effect on radon attenuation (even if not as exciting as the "nearly 100%" predicted by Hammon), USBM was encouraged to extend its evaluation to an actual operating uranium mine, and awarded a contract for that work to Arthur D. Little, Inc. in September 1979. We were fortunate in obtaining the voluntary cooperation of Atlas Minerals Division of Atlas Corp., who operate a mill and several underground mines in and around Moab, Utah. Atlas made available for our use a small T-shaped drift in their Pandora Mine in LaSal, Utah, and provided space for instrumentation and recordkeeping by our field crew in a surface building near the mine entry. Atlas also provided electricity and water to the test site, together with assistance in establishing necessary ventilation, removing rubble from the site, conducting periodic WL surveys and furnishing auxiliary man-power for the heavy hard work of coating the walls with gunite prior to application of the polymeric sealant. INTRODUCTION The Magmont mine is a joint venture of Cominco American Inc. (operator) and Dresser Minerals, Inc. The mine-mill operation is located approximately 160 km (100 miles) southwest of St. Louis, MO, in what is commonly referred to as the "Viburnum Trend.” The Magmont mine is designed for a production rate of 3810.2 t/d (4200 stpd) on a 5-day week, three shifts per day basis. Initial production began in 1968. The mine is open stope, room-and-pillar, and essentially horizontal along the trend of the ore body. Briefly, the main geological structure can be described as a brecciated graben bounded by reverse faults. The ore body in cross section is shaped like a bell curve with some lateral extension at the lower part. Presently outlined ore is 609.6 to 762 m (2000 to 2500 ft) in width and 2133.6 m (7000 ft) in length. The ore varies in thickness from 4.87 m (16 ft) on the fringes to an average of 27 m (90 ft) in the high ore areas bounded by the reverse faults. Lead is the primary metal with zinc and copper secondary. MINE DESIGN The basic design of open stope, room-and-pillar mines has been described by several writers and need not be repeated here. (Anon., 1970; Bullock, 1973; Casteel, 1972; Christiansen et a]., 1970; and Lane, 1964) This discussion covers the mining sequence as applied to the particular problems at the Magmont mine, the use of equipment, and deployment of the work force. In the upper portion of the Magmont ore body is a layer locally called the False Davis shale. This layer lies below the true Davis shale, is normally interbedded with dolomite, is of varying thickness, and if mineralized, is included in the top pass of the mining sequence. In thick ore areas this layer will be 2.13 to 2.43 m (7 to 8 ft) in thickness and will occur in the upper portion of the pillars. Due to its incompetency the presence of this False Davis layer is of primary concern in mine planning and operation. Mining areas are divided into three basic groups by ore thickness. First are areas of ore up to 6.09 m (20 ft) in thickness. These areas are below the False Davis shale and are mined single pass with drill jumbo. Second are those areas up 13.71 to 15.24 m (45 to 50 ft) in height. The first 4.87-111 (16-ft) Pass is taken at the top of the ore and the back and pillars secured. Benching the lower portion(s) in 4.57 to 4.87-m (15 to 16-ft) passes is then done with either a drill jumbo drilling horizontally or a crawler drill drilling vertically. Normally these areas are below the Table 1. Productivities per Manshift False Davis shale. These areas may also be mined by back slashing, or overhand benching, where the first 4.87-m (16-ft) pass is taken at the base of the ore and successive 4.87- m (16-ft) passes are taken upward. A minimum amount of back slashing is done at Magmont since it requires repetition of roof control on each pass and roof control is the single largest stoping cost at Magmont. Ore left to provide a working platform oxidizes and is coated by oil spills thus reducing metallurgical recoveries. The third mining area is over 15.24 m (50 ft) in height UP to a maximum of 40.23 m (132 ft) and will encompass the False Davis shale. These areas are mined by first driving +15% inclines to the top of the ore body. The top pass is mined and the back is bolted and roof mats installed as a matter of standard practice to minimize roof problems as mining progresses downward. Once the back and pillars on the top pass are secured, benching begins on successive passes with either the drill jumbo or crawler drill. Pillars on all successive passes below the top pass are secured as necessary. While benching progresses below the top pass, the pass at the base of the ore body is mined leaving a sill of 4.57 to 7.62 m (15 to 25 ft) in thickness to be removed with the crawler drill in a retreating manner. Rooms are mined on a 1.57 rad (90") grid pattern to insure alignment of pillars where multiple passes are taken. Pillars are designed on a 17.98-m (59-ft) spacing with rooms up to 10.66 m (35 ft) in width. Heading widths are wide enough for the mobile equipment to turn without additional allowance for curves. The result is a flexible layout which provides a maximum number of headings available for high extraction rates and grade control. PRODUCTION Incentive Bonus Incentive bonuses play an important part in the mine production at Magmont. Production crews are trained to perform only one of the mining functions of drilling, blasting, mucking. or roof bolting. This specialization, or functionalization, is augmented by development to open all possible stoping areas as early as possible in the life of the mine. This insures that each crew will have enough headings to perform its specialty. The incentive bonuses increase exponentially as output increases. The lucrative incentive bonus coupled with the specialization of the production crews and proper mine development have combined to give the high productivities shown in Table 1. Development crews perform all mining functions in their area. The incentive bonus is paid on a per foot basis, Crews on different shifts working the same heading share equally in the bonus proportional to their contract hours worked.
