INTRODUCTION To prepare the reader adequately, reference should be made to the paper 'The Pioneering of Fully Mechanized Longwall Coal Mining in South Africa' by R. T. Naude and M. J. Deats, published in the February, 1967, edition of the Journal. At the time mechanized longwalling had been proved operationally feasible with encouraging results since its inception in South Africa in mid 1965. Subsequently, further top seam panels were successfully extracted with improved productivity and with some modification to equipment. In 1968, after an overseas visit by mine officials, equipment specific to suit local conditions was acquired and lower seam trials commenced. Despite initial obstacles and difficulties the first panel was successfully mined. Modification and improvements to equipment and techniques resulted in the second lower seam panel being extracted economically during 1969-1970 and with productivity exceeding even that of top seam faces. During extraction of the second lower seam panel, gradual and complete surface subsidence occurred over the panel without affecting face operations. Rock mechanics investigations had originally indicated some uncertainty regarding adverse dolerite sill behaviour which could have caused longwall mining to be hazardous. All such doubts have now been removed. RESUMÉ AS AT FEBRUARY, 1967 Mechanized longwalling was introduced in 1965 on an experimental basis in an effort to improve productivity in the newer area of the mine and to increase the quality of the comparatively dirty run of mine feed to the washing plant. In addition advantages could be predicted in the long term by better utilizing reserves of straight coking coal and increasing the life of the mine. The top seam unit was obtained on a rental basis and by the beginning of 1967, two panels, the first having a face length of 215 m, a panel length of 345 m, seam section of 1 219 mm, and the second the same face length, a panel length of 453 m and a seam section of 1 067 mm had been successfully longwalled. At this stage a best month of 24 602 metric tons with an average of 17 364 metric tons per full working month could be reported. Results were sufficiently encouraging for the company to exercise its right to acquire the equipment as its own asset and from 1967 onward, the unit has operated on this basis. From the point of view of rock mechanics, the dolerite sill over the first two panels was known to have 'bridged', only the material below the base of the sill having truly 'goafed'. No adverse pressure effects had significantly affected face operations except for two 'bumps' towards the end of operations in each panel. Gate road maintenance presented no problem. The strong inflows of water experienced on the first face were now known to be associated with an isolated water bearing fault plane and were not experienced on the second face. TOP SEAM EXPERIENCE - MAY, 1966, TO DATE Panel 2 (February, 1966, to November, 1966) The operations in panel 2 (see Fig. 1 for location of panels) continued uneventfully until the final month in this panel. At this stage, the chocks behaved most inconsistently often lowering under the weight of the canopies alone. Roof trouble became so severe that the unit was unable to produce adequately and blasting of chocks became a daily occurrence. Finally 24 m short of the planned limit it was decided that a complete overhaul was the only solution and the extraction operations commenced. At this time, the only fatal accident associated with longwalling occurred when a Non-White inadvertently fell into the panzer conveyor transfer point at the main gate. Some gate road difficulties in this panel were overcome by bolting tapes to the roof as decking and allowing them to pass over the gate chocks and collapse into the goaf. Two cribbed roof falls were also negotiated by the gate chocks at the face ends without undue difficulties. It was decided in the light of maintenance problems encountered on this face that the best solution would be to appoint a foreman solely in charge of face maintenance crews. This step has to a large extent contributed to success achieved subsequently. Panel 2-face length 213 m panel length 456 m cutting height 1 092 mm average monthly output 16 443 t best month 19 130 t Panel 3 (December, 1966, to June, 1967) By the end of 1966 results were sufficiently encouraging for the company to exercise its right to acquire the equipment. This was negotiated and the unit has operated as such to the present date. Prior to installation in panel 3, all face equipment was thoroughly overhauled underground and the chocks boost-tested to yield-load. The costs of overhauling, including almost complete hose replacement, were much higher than anticipated. Advice had been received that complete hose replacement was common practice after +/- 18 months' operation. Shortly after commencement of operations in panel 3 the chocks again failed as they had towards the end of panel 2. At this stage, the suppliers advised that the valve gear should have been repaired during the overhaul as the needle and seat seals could no longer be relied upon. This operation was impossible to carry out on the face and would have been e1ttremely time consuming. Fortunately a new type of valve gear was then available from the suppliers, termed the capsule-type valve, and a complete change over could be made on the face. Discussion M. J. Martinson* (Associate Member): This is another interesting paper in the series which the Human Sciences Laboratory is publishing on the physiological cost of the more strenuous manual tasks performed underground. As a mining engineer-albeit presently an academic one -this contributor is more concerned with the practical significance of the study in the field of stope cleaning than with physiological niceties, but before discussing some of the practical issues raised by the paper perhaps the authors would care to reply to lay comment on three physiological matters. Firstly, in two places the authors make statements to the effect that the maximum oxygen intake of 'average' (sic) Bantu mine workers is 3.0 l/min. What do the authors mean by 'average'? Maximum oxygen intake in the individual is probably some function of inter alia age, physical fitness, state of health, ambient partial pressure of oxygen, diurnal and/or seasonal changes in metabolism, and possibly cumulative exposure to dust and other occupational contaminants. Since maximum oxygen intake is apparently such an important quality in manual labourers we ought to have a clear picture of its distribution in the entire labour force, and also know precisely how the individual's quantum is affected by factors such as those mentioned above. Secondly, arising out of the same statements and ignoring the reservation implicit in the previous paragraph, is it correct to say that the 'average' Bantu mine worker has a maximum intake of 3.0 l/min? In the August 1966 issue of the South African Journal of Science four of the present co-authors reported the mean maximum oxygen intake of a random sample of 338 Bantu recruits of different tribes to be 2.63 l/min with a standard deviation of 0.542 l/min, and these figures were repeated in a paper published in the November 1968 issue of this Journal. Admittedly the mean maximum oxygen intake of the six subjects used in the present study was 3.05 l/min, but since they were selected on the grounds of previous shovelling experience they can hardly be regarded as being 'average' recruits. Thirdly, it seems to me that the authors are perhaps a little uncritical in their acceptance of the '50 per cent of maximum oxygen intake' level of activity for endurance work. I am not unmindful of the evidence upon which this level is based, but I suggest that the evidence is at best tenuous and that the whole topic of fatigue and 'optimum' levels of productivity under conditions of high muscular activity and considerable psychological stress is a lot more complicated than would appear from the authors' ready acceptance of the 50 per cent level. Under present working conditions the question is largely rhetorical because it would need an army of supervisors to ensure that all members of a typical gang work at 'optimum' levels throughout the shift, but if individual performance should ever become more readily determinable the issue might become crucial to management and malayisha alike. So much for physiological matters; now a few random thoughts on some wider, practical issues raised by the paper. In the paragraph headed Material the statement is made that 'The mixture (of fine, medium-sized and bigger rocks) was considered to be representative of an average underground rock sample'. Elsewhere in the report the authors specifically draw attention to the effect of particle size on the oxygen consumption of men shovelling graded material, and intuitively one imagines that the size distribution of the material being shovelled would be highly significant in a study such as this. Presumably the authors were forced to assess size distribution subjectively because of the lack of objective data on the subject, and possibly the necessity for this assumption highlights how little we know quantitatively about any of the variables in stope cleaning systems. In this connection it may be remarked that although the present study was largely designed to show how dip and stoping width effect energy expenditure in shovelling, no data are given-nor, probably, are they available-to show how the industry's stoping tonnage is distributed in terms of these two factors. It seems to me that if the mining industry seriously hopes to improve stope productivity it must start by measuring the basic variables in existing systems. Elaborating somewhat on the previous paragraph, there also seems to be a tremendous gap between the present study-and its predecessors-and the prospect of gainfully using the information so carefully garnered by the authors. It would be reassuring to hear from the authors that their work on the physiological aspects is being integrated in some master plan for increasing productivity of manual labour. This I fear is not the case, and if productivity has changed at all in recent years I would hazard a guess that the change has been brought about by random factors rather than by systematic engineering design. The Human Sciences Laboratory has worked extensively in stopes in the past, and possibly the time has come when it should widen the ambit of its operations to include engineering-type analyses of cleaning systems, with particular emphasis on the economics of rapid cleaning by manual labour. Perhaps experiments could be conducted with stakhanovite-type gangs consisting of men selected for their high maximum oxygen intake and superior motivation; these men might be offered special incentives in the shape of extra pay

As exploration is time-consuming, costly, and risky, determination of the erosion surface of a metalliferous deposit before geophysical surveying and exploration drilling might be very helpful. Geochemical haloes can be used to determine whether the erosion surface is supra-ore or sub-ore and thus reduce the risk of exploration operations. The aim of this investigation is to determine the erosion surface of the North ROK porphyry deposit (NRPD) in northwestern British Columbia in Canada using linear productivity (LP), which is the content of an element defining the halo multiplied by the width of the halo. A total of 2045 soil samples from the B horizon were analysed using ICP-MS for 36 elements, including Cu, Mo, Pb, Zn, Au, As, Ag, Ni, Co, Fe, and Mn. The data-set was snalysed to obtain the statistical parameters and the elements Cu, Mo, Pb, and Zn were chosen to calculate the linear productivity and the total linear productivity. These four elements were modelled using probability plots to identify and separate subpopulations in terms of anomalous haloes and background, including the threshold values of each subpopulation. The results of the probability plot modelling and thresholds values were then used to map the distribution of each element in a GIS to calculate the linear productivity. The total linear productivity indicated that the erosion surface is supra-ore. Finally, a 3D orebody model of the Cu, Mo, Pb, and Zn distributions was constructed using borehole data and used to validate the results.

Since the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886, mining has been at the centre of South Africa’s development. Although mining continues to contribute significantly to the country’s economy, it is a temporary land-use activity, and mine closure is inevitable. This paper reviews mine closure planning at Tshikondeni coal mine, which commenced in 2014 with the initiation of mine closure. The review presents the mine closure processes undertaken at the Tshikondeni coal mine as regulated by South Africa’s principal mining legislation, the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002, and other relevant regulatory frameworks. To compile this review: (1) A desktop study was conducted; (2) empirical data was collected through one-on-one interviews with research participants at Tshikondeni coal mine; and 3) physical observations were made of the rehabilitation at various mine operations within the Tshikondeni coal mine complex. Research participants consisted of mine officials from different departments, i.e., human resources, and environmental, social, and business strategy, who were directly involved with the Tshikondeni coal mine closure. A questionnaire with semi-structured questions was developed. It was utilised to acquire a better understanding of mine closure planning at Tshikondeni coal mine and identify mine closure processes that aim to achieve post-mining land uses and align with Tshikondeni coal mine’s post-closure strategy, namely the Tshikondeni Legacy Project, with a post-closure strategy that has the potential to transition a mining economy to an eco-tourism economy that can preserve livelihoods and selfreliant communities.

Tornados are the most violent weather events in the world, and we have all seen the forces and phenomena created by tornados in nature. Airgrinder AB has been working with a material treatment technology, which most easily could be described as an artificial tornado. The process consists principally of one air fan providing a high-velocity airstream that enters a mechanical cyclone. When the gas enters the cyclone, an outer vortex is created. This outer vortex rotates next to the cyclone wall, and at the bottom of the cyclone funnel the gas stream is turned and an inner vortex is created. The control of the air flow is tuned by a special device on top of the cyclone. The gas outlet is at the top of the cyclone and the material outlet at the bottom. The material is fed through a feeding device into the air stream channel prior to the inlet into the cyclone. The process is basically an improved grinding and dehydrating system, which is very efficient and environmentally friendly and can even be employed with very sticky materials. Also due to its rotating comminution, the material particles become rounded during grinding, hence more free flowing and easier to handle. MEFOS has already tested more than 30 different applications in the pilot equipment. The materials tested range from metallurgical slags containing 2?3% moisture to sludges with up to70% moisture. This technology has a potentially strong impact on mineral beneficiation, including the drying of sticky fine-grained materials, improved and selective gas scrubbing and the manufacture of free flowing powders.

This paper deals with an experimental programme carried out with a gold analyser in the period June to September 1979 at Loraine Gold Mines. The results were found to be reproducible, with no overall or conditional bias when the measurements were compared with those obtained from chip samples. The standard error of estimation of a 3 m reef exposure, which was the sampling interval, can be reduced by a factor of 2,5 if the complete stretch is scanned, rather than the taking of one chip sample in its centre. Complete statistical and computational procedures were developed for the fitting of the normal-Iognormal model to observed analyser data and for the determination of the most likely gold grade for a particular analyser measurement. (This corection procedure is necessary since a significant number of negative analyser measurements can be observed.) Panel averages of uncorrected scans showed a small conditional bias relative to those of corrected scans. However, uncorrected panel averages can be used for on-the-spot decisions regarding whole panels. For standard calculations of ore reserves, use should be made of corrected scans. Under reasonable assumptions, the use of the detector in the selective mining of low-grade narrow reefs such as the Basal Reef at Loraine Gold Mines, when compared with the conventional chip-sampling method, can result in a saving of as high as R40 million in present-money terms over the life of a project. The difference could be even larger in a highly variable reef like the B Reef at Loraine Gold Mines.

The elution of gold from activated carbon using deionized water by R. J. DAVIDSON, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Rhodes) (Visitor) and D. DUNCANSON, H.N.C., B.Sc. Hons. (Strathclyde) (Visitor) The pretreatment of gold-loaded activated carbon with a relatively strong sodium cyanide solution prior to elution with deionized water at 90 to 125°Chas been shown to have a most beneficial effect on the elution of gold. The findings emphasize the important role played by the calcium cation and the hydroxyl anion in effecting efficient elution of gold. The elution of the relatively unstable complexes of silver and base metals with cyanide was also significantly affected by the ratio of the sodium cyanide to sodium hydroxide in the reagents used in the pretreatment stage. It was demonstrated that the use of 0,5 bed volume of a pretreatment reagent comprising 10 per cent sodium cyanide stabilized with I per cent sodium hydroxide for safety reasons resulted in a virtually 100 per cent recovery of adsorbed gold, silver, and base metals on subsequent elution with deionized water. The elution procedure takes a relatively short time, about 14 hours at 90°C (7 bed volumes) or 3 hours if pressure elution at 125°C (4 to 5 bed volumes) is used. Because the mechanism of elution after pretreatment entails the shifting of a physical rather than a chemical equilibrium, the higher the gold loading on the activated carbon, the more efficient is the elution procedure. When compared with other elution procedures, the proposed method appears to have several economic advantages.

Discussion: L. T. Campbell Pitt: When Mr Garrett and I discussed the design and construction of plugs and bulk head doors to resist great water pressures in mines about ten years ago, we visualized an emeregeny when there would be no time for site preparation. We could not however, anticipate a problem of such magnitude and urgency as the one described in the paper under discussion. The paper very clearly describes the flooding and the measures taken to save the mine. The complete flooding would have been a national disaster. The account of the combat between man and water reads like the account of a military operation. It was an endeavour which achieved success because there was a master plan, tenacity and, in fact, heroism. The paper is of necessity a long one. In my contribution I will mention some historical facts and factors that I believe have relevance to the flooding and the saving of the mine. It is of great satisfaction to me to have been one of the two initiators of a new approach to underground plug design and construction. The investigation was taken over by a Chamber of Mines Committee which combined our early work with further research and the resulting data had a significant bearing on the West Drie emergency plug designs. The final plug length was correctly based on the requirements to obviate leakage. A plug to have structural strength only would have been very much shorter but so ineffective as to have become a waste of labour, material, and in consequence, wasted the limited time available to prevent flooding of the whole mine. The figure of 75 lb per sq in. sheer stress provided a very ample margin, in my opinion, but under the very difficult site conditions and the limitations of plug material suitable for the very unusual construction, justified such a figure. There must have been considerable temptation to reduce the safety margin due to the urgency to complete and commission the plugs, but it is much to the credit of the directors of this operation that nothing less than a safe design was permitted. In about 1945 Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mining Company, which was then mining in to the West Driefontein area to assist in early development, decided to protect themselves from a possible inrush of water from the latter mine. A bulk head door was accordingly designed and installed on 2 level between 1945 and 1948 at 4,218 ft below surface. Since West Driefontein paid for it, Gold Fields consulting mechanical engineers collaborated with their colleagues of Rand Mines who completed their design after a few modifications were agreed. This door was never used to prevent an inrush into Blyvooruitzicht but the exercise was very useful to Gold Fields when the high pressure doors initially installed on 10 and 12 levels between Nos. 2 and 3 shafts to enable isolation of one section of the mine from another were designed. At that time the capacity of West Driefontein to cope with an inrush of water was comparatively small because the storage in stoped areas and the installed pump capacity were much less than in later years. These doors together with others of the same design were later moved to the lower levels served by sub vertical shafts. In addition, doors to prevent flood water entering the pump chambers on 18 level were installed at each end of that level, and designed for a head of 360 feet so that water would have to reach 16 level before the pumps were flooded. All these doors were called upon to hold water and it is reported that only a small plug in one of the doors and a 4 in. dia flanged pipe joint failed. The lesson is that in these cases the smallest details warrant as much attention as the major ones. That these were the only equipment failures when so much depended on equipment, is very much to the credit of design engineers, both of the Gold Fields head office and companies who supplied both mechanical and electrical equipment. Until I had read the paper I wondered why the policy of isolation by bulk head doors was not continued as the development moved eastward towards the Bank Compartment and particularly when it pierced the Bank dyke. The reasons have been given in the paper. It was unreasonable to expect provisions to be made to counter the remote contingency that the large installed pumping capacity and mine capacity to store water would be exceeded during a peak inrush. When pumps were being considered for West Driefontein, it was decided that the Gold Fields standard underground main pumps at that time of 1 million gallons per 24 hours would be too small. Three alternatives were considered. 1. Very large units that would require underground sub assembly and dismantling of both pump and motor. 2. The largest pump and motor that could be conveyed as a complete pump or motor from surface to the pump chamber. 3. Pumps of higher speed to reduce dimensions and weight. It was decided to adopt alternate 2 because of avoidance of transporting pumps in parts and assembling underground. Alternative 3 was not favoured because high speeds would have introduced problems of more exact rotor balancing. I believe the decision was correct and in the crisis enabled comparative easy transport of pumps and motors to surface for overhaul and, if required, transfer to other pump stations. The standard pump thus became a 10 stage 1,500 rpm pump with a capacity of approximately 2 million gallons per 24 hours against a static head that varied

This paper will review some methods used to manage geotechnical risk at Damang Pit Cutback. The pit depth is designed up to 250m with push back on the eastern and western walls of the existed and depleted Railway Cutback (RCB) pit. The geotechnical design was presented by SRK Perth, focussing on the optimisation of the bench face angle which finally evolved with ?steep slope strategy?; 24m at 800 and 24m at 750 on the eastern and western walls respectively. The east wall was designed strategically to optimise the proximity of the tailings dam to the final pit crest of the push back. The pit has experienced failure in the weathered profile transgressing through the transitional material into the fresh rock at different location of the east wall since development in July 2005. To ensure stability and to minimise ore loss, the east wall has been redesigned using 700 batter angles and reduced berm width of 4m compared to 800 and 8.5 berm width of 24m bench height. The paper will also discuss how slope failures to the east wall had been sustained, managed and monitored to enhance production. Emphasis is placed on slope management at Damang which includes the principles of wall control blast, visual inspection, slope depressurisation and the state-of-the art of slope monitoring using Autoslope automated prism monitoring. Future slope monitoring is considering the use of 3D Laser and Radar to provide early warning so that evacuation could be effected. The intension is to provide mine personnel the means to identify risk areas during mining activities.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng) (Chemical) The generation and control of manganese sulphide particle size distribution using various mixing configurations were investigated. Specifically, this paper discusses how varying mixing intensities on a macro and micro scale affect the resultant manganese sulphide particle size distribution (PSD) at a constant concentration. The mixing variations were achieved using various Y- and T-mixers as premixing devices into a jacketed, agitated vessel. The reagents used to generate the seeds were aqueous manganese sulphate and sodium sulphide solutions. The results showed that the absence of micromixing resulted in very poor control of the particle size distribution, the particle size and the number of particles produced. This was due to the fact that the macromixing time is much greater than the corresponding precipitation time, resulting in different mixing regions existing within the reactor. From the micromixing experiments, the T?mixer was found to be the most effective mixing device at lower concentrations due to the T-mixer providing a faster mixing time than the other mixing configurations, thereby effectively localizing the supersaturation and hence controlling the precipitation. The results obtained from the direct addition without the extension pipe (i.e. short mixing time) indicated a general increase in mean particle size and decrease in total particle number at reagent concentration of 0.007 mol.dm-3as compared to the corresponding micromixing experiments. The phenomenon may be due to incomplete crystallization at the immediate exit of the mixing device. Further experiments need to be conducted before any conclusions can be drawn about the precipitation mechanisms.

For practical reasons all basic input data for the gold mines of the Anglovaal Group conform to a regular grid of averages of sample values within 25-ft squares in the plane of the ore body; individual sample values with their metric co-ordinates are input and converted by a computer program to the basic 25-ft square averages. At the Prieska copper mine the bore- hole data are forced on to a regular grid of 15-m squares corresponding to the coordinates of the grid points nearest to the actual borehole intersections. As for the gold mines the Prieska ore body, although some 3 to 30 m thick, is also dealt with on a two-dimensional basis (Krige, 1973). On the gold mines the data subjected to geostatistical analysis cover: gold values (in cm g/t), uranium values (cm kg/t), and channel widths (cm). The gold and uranium values are normalised on the basis of log (value plus constant) and all the geostatistical analyses are performed on these transformed values. The channel widths usually conform reasonably well to the normal distribution and are, therefore, not transformed. At Prieska the metal grades analysed cover the two main products, copper and zinc, as well as the impurities lead and bismuth; in addition the specific gravity values and the hanging- and foot-wall deviations from a projection plane are also handled. These were all previously used on an untransformed basis but because of problems associated with the proportional effect the lognormal-de Wijsian model is now used for some of the grade variables. Mining is a business involving extraction of commodities of value to society from non-renewable resources. Consequently there is only one opportunity to extract ore from the ore body in order to unlock the value potential encompassed in the asset. It is therefore imperative that the maximum value is unlocked during the extraction programme, considering the relative wealth generated for shareholders and society, the sustainability of society, the environment and the operation. The bulk of the value that is unlocked is usually embedded in the initial design process. How do you measure sucess The most common measure of success is the return on investment, which is unlocked during the extraction process. This is usually only determined and locked-in during the study process. Another measure of success is the profitability that is achieved on a monthly basis. A further measure would be the enhancement the asset affords to the share price of the operation. Increasing focus on sustainable development requires that the impact on the society and environment received high priority as well. All these measures are largely encompassed in the cash flow and the discounted cash flows. This paper focuses on the dynamics of the cash flow and the most significant elements influencing return in investment. These include the mine design, production volume, sustainability, risk and valuation techniques. When do you add the most value? There are many different phases and definitions noted by different authors to demonstrate and standardise the study process for new projects. This paper is based on a process with 3 major components namely a conceptual study, a prefeasibility study and a feasibility study.

We have studied this mineral-collector association in the size range given and results were satisfactory. For larger pick-up values than that illustrated an induction period of more than 0.01 second was required (actually 90 seconds for a maximum bubble load at pH 7.2 with 25 g/t oleic acid!). Mr Slander and Mr Kooij Researchworkers in a practical mineral development laboratory may well ask what contribution yet another micro-technique can make to the problems of large scale ore flotation. The obvious answer is that there can be little or no direct translation of results obtained with a static system comprising air bubble and pure mineral concentrate to a dynamic multicomponent operation. However, for the rapid study of one mineral or variable some small scale apparatus must be employed. In the Anglo American Research Laboratory, the described semi-quantitative pick-up technique has filled a niche and requirement. For ourselves, the system represents a definite advance over the contact angle approach in that samples of minerals conventionally prepared in laboratory or plant may be used, which is a desired step nearer flotation. We bracket this pick-up apparatus with the Hallimond tube1,2 and evidence is now to hand that pick-up curves may often be related to flotation recoveries obtained from this tube with pure mineral samples and from the Fuerstenau glass cell3 with the total ore at low pulp densities. We would not wish to push the comparison of pick-up results past this stage for there is much published development work relating the Hallimond and Fuerstenau equipment to flotation on a larger scale. At the Anglo American Research Laboratory for example, a test in a Fuerstenau cell is often the final integrated step in laboratory investigations into the TORCO process. As these contributors rightly point out, pick-up tests can offer nothing towards the determination of optimum reagent dosage for large scale flotation. This is the function of bench-type flotation cells with up to 2 kg batches of ore. At this level, collector performance and consumption and physical properties of the froth are more comparable with large scale operation. The pick-up cell, Hallimond tube and Fuerstenau cell are essentially equipment from which the effect of control parameters can be derived. For the assessment of collector behaviour, the pick-up approach is rapid and economic and we offer here a pick-up contribution towards the flotation of Witwatersrand uraninite with anionic sulphonate collectors (Fig. 1). A large crystal of the local mineral was not available for contact angle measurements and owing to its low concentration in Witwatersrand gold-bearing reef, a small sample was laboriously obtained by tabling, superpanning and heavy medium separation. The pick-up values of a sized portion were determined by the described procedure in the presence of nine petroleum sulphonate collectors. Responses fell into two categories; "normal" curves (dotted lines) and a group of collectors which were very active at low concentration but showed depression of pick-up at the higher levels. The similarity in form of curves for collectors 1 and 3 was apparent and reagent 3 was found to be simply a diluent of 1. Otherwise, collector performance could not be related to either sulphonate content or molecular weight of the active constituent. However, reagent 2 gave the best performance in a bench flotation cell with regard to overall uranium distribution but, as predicted, reagent 1 yielded the best grades. Later pick-up tests with a similar class of collector have suggested that depression at high reagent concentrations may be due to "bubble armouring" whereby an hydrophilic air-liquid interface is produced which rejects mineral attachment. Prolonged investigations with the same mineral sample have not been required except for the study of uraninite which lasted for more than a year. Variation in pick-up response could not be detected over this period during which the mineral was stored under distilled water. The only visible change was a small efflorescence of lead sulphate, readily removed and decanted off after stirring with a glass rod in the sample tube. In its main role as a "trouble-shooter", the pick-up method is applied to fresh mineral samples taken from a flotation plant and soon discarded or from a current run in the ore-dressing laboratory. After production of a concentrate, a solvent cycle, as described in the original paper, may be required to remove heavy organics or other contaminants as when a sample has been taken from circuits containing detergents, grease or return flotation solutions. This solvent cycle will not remove chemisorbed collectors and we prefer not to work with minerals from flotation tailings or with pick-up cell discards. It has been thought preferable to answer the contributors' other apprehensions with regard to sample preparation, activators, depressants and the physical properties of reagents in another paper on offer to this Journal. It covers pick-up investigations relating to the flotation of nickeliferous pyrrhotite at two Anglo American Corporation Mines, which approach seemed the correct orientation for a reply to another contributor to this paper.

"The purpose of this study was to demonstrate unmanned aircraft system (UAS) technology in opencast highwall mapping using the experience at Isibonelo Colliery in Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. In opencast mines, geological mapping has evolved over time and there have been challenges in extracting valuable information from exposed highwalls due to restricted access for safety reasons. A UAS was used at Isibonelo Colliery to conduct highwall mapping, using drone-based digital photogrammetry techniques. A demonstration survey was undertaken during February 2018. The highwall flyover demonstration was planned for two areas (North and South pits) where field control points were placed by the mine survey department. A contractor used a DJI Phantom 4 (Pro) for the highwall mapping. Raw data was processed within 48 hours and a 3D model of the mapped pit area was produced. Further data extraction included obtaining updated weathering and lithological contact elevations and thicknesses for use in short-term planning. The results showed a good correlation between the resource model and the UAS data model. The project was considered a success and highwall flyover mapping and is now standard practice at Isibonelo Colliery.IntroductionDetailed geological mapping is crucial to the understanding of the structure of any mineral deposit. Several mapping methods may be applied depending on the available exposure/outcrop and nature of the orebody; for example, coal deposits typically suboutcrop only, therefore an opencut highwall provides the best exposure for mapping the geology. Mapped information, when incorporated into a resource model (generated from exploration borehole data), improves the understanding of the orebody or coal seam. This research paper focused on the use of unmanned aircraft system (UAS) technology for pit highwall mapping to generate data for updating geological models and avail the latest information to mine planning to improve the short-term plans."

Calcium minerals such as scheelite, phosphate, apatite are valuable minerals, which have similar flotation properties to the calcium gangue minerals. An additional problem is the fine dispersion and close mineral association of valuable and other minerals. Low polar compounds (non-ionic surfactant), such as fatty iso alcohols, neonol and phosphol, and their combinations with sodium oleate have been studied using flotation of monominerals and ore flotation; ATR IR spectroscopy and TEM for study surface of minerals; UV spectroscopy for control solubility, aggregation and de-aggregation processes. Increase in solubility of fatty acid collectors was confirmed by low soluble (heteropolar) compounds. Oxyethylated esters of phosphoric acid are adsorbed on phosphorite by -O2PO2R2 and on other rock minerals by donation of OH bond. Same effect shows difference of adsorption of fatty iso alcohols on calcite and scheelite. The different forms of adsorption of ionic and nonionic compound on a sparingly-soluble mineral surface creates distinction of the flotation kinetics and technological balance of ore flotation. The results of the separation of flotation of scheelite from calcite depend on the order of pouring into pulp of fatty iso alcohols and oleate, and their ratio in the mixture. Increasing scheelite recovery into rougher scheelite concentrate by 3.6% for both the flotation and sludge classes was obtained. Calcite recovery varied slightly upwards or downwards by 0.8-2.4%. The use of the non-ionic surfactant phosphol in combination with a fatty acid soap allows for obtaining a phosphate concentrate with more than 28% P2O5 content and almost 80% recovery in flotation operation. In the last decades, the exponential increase in the cells’ volume resulted in significant advantages such as investment costs, footprint and energy savings. However, in larger size cells, despite the increased diameter/height ratio, new constraints arose related to the need for decreasing the larger froth transport distances to enhance the froth recovery. Thus, the use of froth crowders and internal launders became compulsory to maintain the froth transport distances but decreasing the ratio between gas and collected mineral flowrates. Consequently, the bubble load will increase until reaching a critical bubble surface coverage. In this paper, the concentrate carrying capacity (tph/m2) is described in terms of the bubble surface coverage (bubble loading) at the pulp-froth interface and the froth recovery (froth transport) and is evaluated as a function of the cells’ volume and operating variables. A sensitivity analysis, based on industrial operating and design conditions, such as superficial gas rate, particles size, froth crosssectional area and cells’ volume, was developed for evaluating the metallurgical performance of cells from 100 to 630 m3. Results show that limiting carrying capacity can arise for the whole range of cells’ volume, depending on critical operating conditions, particularly in first rougher cells and cleaning stages of industrial flotation circuits. The increase in cells’ volume consistently increases the bubble loading (bubble surface coverage) under all conditions, approaching the limiting conditions more rapidly in the case of cells without internal launders. Otherwise, the limiting condition was achieved when the particle size DPS decreased from 50 to 20 (μm) and for superficial gas rates significantly less or larger than 1 (cm/s). The use of internal launders allows for increasing the range of the operating conditions needed to reach a certain carrying capacity. The growing market demand for lithium is mainly due to its use in the manufacture of batteries for electric or hybrid vehicles and portable equipment (smartphones, tablets, power tools, notebooks, etc.). Currently there is great interest in finding new sources of lithium and technologies for its utilisation. Li-S batteries have received attention due to their theoretically high specific energy density, which is 3 to 5 times greater than that of Li-ion batteries. Unlike Li-ion batteries, of which the main raw materials are lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, the main raw material for Li-S batteries is lithium chloride. The anode used in Li-S batteries is metallic lithium, produced by a molten lithium chloride electrolysis process. The extraction of lithium from pegmatites such as spodumene, previously abandoned in the 1990s for being uneconomical, has become attractive due to the increase in prices as well as the need for greater lithium purity of products made from lithium-bearing minerals. The main methods used for lithium recovery from spodumene ore include the sulfuric acid process, the alkaline process (lime or limestone as raw material) and the chlorination roasting process. Thermodynamic modelling using HSC software 5.1 was conducted to predict different reactions that could occur during chlorination roasting of the spodumene/MgCl2+CaCl2 system. Lithium extraction from the solid obtained after the chlorination roasting was also investigated. The results of thermodynamic analysis provided a better understanding of the chlorination roasting process for lithium extraction. Metallurgical tests with a mass ratio of 1:6 (spodumene:chlorides) and molar ratio of 2:1 (MgCl2:CaCl2) allowed over 95% recovery of the lithium contained in the spodumene concentrate. A large new underground platinum mining project required that all different mining options were investigated during an option study before proceeding to the prefeasibility stage of the project. The capital project team identified 21 different options requiring investigation. These options considered 10 different access methods and 4 different mining methods. Each of the 21 options required a mine design, a valid production schedule, and the associated economics in order to facilitate a comparison on project Net Present Value (NPV) and other metrics. The project sponsors required this work to be completed in 3 months and therefore the project team decided to adopt an object-oriented modelling approach as implemented by Cyest Corporation. This would allow all 21 options to be valuated within the tight time frame due to the generation and re-use of templates. Standard objects were configured into templates containing the mine layout, design, and scheduling logic. These templates could then be assembled into a model to represent the option being investigated. The adoption of rules-based design and production scheduling then allowed for the rapid generation of a valid production schedule for each option with different iterations of varying production ramp-up and mining efficiency assumptions. The activity-based operating costs, labour, and capital were also linked to the standard templates such as a half level or barrel, which were then replicated to represent the overall mine structure for each option under consideration. Using this approach for each option, a full production schedule was produced per mining activity, the operating costs were calculated using activity-based costing, an infrastructure capital expenditure estimate was determined, the development capital requirements costed, and an overall NPV determined. This options study was completed in an unprecedented 10 weeks and a recommendation was put through to the Business to take three of the options to the next study phase.

"Both Polish and European hard coal mining nowadays faces the need of deepening shafts (significantly in some cases) or extending mining hoists, due to the exploitation of deeper coal deposits.In order to protect the crew working within a shaft, rope safety platforms (artificial shaft bottoms) are employed. Old solutions, based on rigid steel constructions with the external damping layers made of e.g. slag and up to several tens of metres long, are intended to absorb the energy of approximately 5 t mass falling a distance of 700 m. However, current requirements often assume a drop of 20 t to a depth of 1000 m or even more.More modern safety platform structures, made of one or more support rings with steel ropes stretched on them (rope platforms), are more compact (up to 3 m high) and lighter than traditional solutions. Multi-ring rope platforms with additional damping layers filling the empty spaces between the ropes are able to absorb sufficient energy to meet the current requirements.Single- and double-ring platforms have been employed in Poland to absorb the energy of approximately 5 t dropping to a depth of 900 m. They have been developed (and some have already been implemented) by SADEX Ltd. and are protected by various patents and patent applications.This paper presents a design for a triple-ring platform structure with six rope nets. FEM analysis was used to model the performance of the platform. According to the simulation, a 20 t mass falling from 1000 m (>100 m/s) will destroy all the nets, breaking most of the ropes and deforming the support steel boards placed on the nets, but will ultimately be stopped by the platform, as its kinetic energy falls to zero."
