In the past, mine management has been concerned with removing water from active mining sections primarily because it hampered the movement of mining equipment and aggravated the working condition of the miners. Pumping water to sumps and gravity drainage by ditching have proven successful in mines for minimizing section down time due to water influx. However, with the advent of more strict pollution laws the mining engineer must now be concerned with keeping water out of the section and also with preventing it from causing pollution. A review of the handbooks and textbooks used in the mining engineering curricula reveals that little has been written concerning acid mine water prevention or control in underground coal mines. Additionally, the review of the curricula of mining schools indicates they are not teaching the engineering students the necessary techniques of mine water management as they relate to the abatement of mine water pollution.

The stone resources in certain localities and the kinds of stone available often influence manufacturing companies in their choice of plant location and in possible expansion of their activities. Limestone in particular is an important raw material for many processing industries. In planning highways and public works and placing contracts therefor, the availability of aggregates and road stone is significant. On the other hand, persons who contemplate entering the stone business or opening now quarries need information as to possible competition. To meet the growing need for regional data of this type, the Bureau of Mines has compiled from its records and presents herein the location of stone quarries by States and counties and by kinds of stone. The list covers all stationary and portable commercial quarry operations whose production statistics for 1940 were reported to the Bureau of Mines but does not include undeveloped deposits and noncommercial or Government-operated quarries.

Enhance the critical skill of hazard recognition among miners by providing quality training that can help jot performance and lead to a higher degree of safety in the workplace. Background In mining, as in many other occupations, the safety of the worker depends on his or her ability to recognize hazards in the workplace. Some of the information needed by the miner for recognizing potential areas of danger is available in the form of visual cues found throughout the mine. One aspect of the dynamic mine environment it which the task of hazard recognition is critical for al workers is that of ground control. Regardless of job responsibilities, every worker is continuously exposed to roof rib, and floor hazards. Fatality injury data for the "underground coal" segment of the mining industry continue to show that about half of all fatalities are due to falls of ground each year. It is hypothesized that some of these accident, can be prevented if miners are better able to recognize visual cues that forewarn of potential roof and rib problems.

The heats of formation of oxalic acid and sodium, potassium oxalates, and lithium oxalates were related by solution calorimetry to the heat of formation of (COOH)2.2H20, a value believed to be reliable as reported in the literature. The following heats of formation were determined: (COOH)2(a), -198.1±0.1; (COOH)2(ß), -197.8±0.1; UAW,, -328.7±0.4; Na2C204 -316.2±0.1; K2C204, -321.9±0.2; and K2C204-H20, -393.5±0.2 kcal/mole. The heat of the crystalline transformation (COOH)2(a) ? (COOH)2(ß) was determined to be 0.30±0.02 kcal/mole at 298.15° K.

To reduce safety and production problems, it is essential that the electrical operating characteristics of coal mining equipment and their electrical subsystems be clearly understood. The Bureau of Mines and the Pennsylvania State University have developed techniques to monitor and analyze several of the critical parameters. A unique system for measuring traction locomotive consumption at the machine has been assembled and utilized. Conclusions from 27 continuous miners show that voltage levels are directly tied to machine efficiency. The Bureau of Mines and Pennsylvania State University, along with West Virginia University, are currently monitoring and accessing mine power transients. Results exhibit that voltage transients of three to five times the line -to-line value are common on underground distribution systems.

Develop a safe, nonpolluting power source for underground mining equipment. Approach The Bureau of Mines and EIM-CO Mining Machinery International entered into a cost-shared project to develop and demonstrate a novel power source for mining. An underground mining utility truck was equipped with an ultra-low-emission hydrogen-fueled engine and a safe, metal hydride fuel storage system. How It Works The nonpolluting hydrogen engine and a "solid-state" (metal hyride) hydrogen fuel storage system were combined to power a utility mining vehicle. An 85 horsepower diesel engine was convened to burn hydrogen. The engine was converted by equipping it with a spark ignition, lowering the compression ratio, turbocharging, and adding an ahercooler and a parallel fuel induction system. Parallel induction provides two intake paths, one for hydrogen and one for air. It avoids intake-manifold backfiring by keeping the hydrogen and air separate until they enter the cylinder.

Hang ventilating air curtains so that they can be installed, moved, opened and closed more easily than curtains that are spadded or nailed in place. Approach Low-leakage plastic curtains fitted with grommets along the top were threaded onto a steel cable which is suspended from roof bolt plates. The system was tested in two mines. How It Works The curtains are threaded onto a steel cable which is suspended from roof bolt plates by S-shaped hooks. See Figure 1. The outby end of the cable is reeled off a hand operated winch; the inby end of the cable is anchored to a roof bolt plate by means of a cable grip and an S-shaped hook. To install the curtains the following procedure is used. First, the winch is located at least 5 feet outby the last open cross-cut. The base of the winch can be secured to the mine roof with short roof bolts, only about a foot long.

Assure fail-safe stopping of a mining vehicle immediately following a loss of electric power. Approach A separate emergency brake system which actuates when electrical power is interrupted, was installed on several mining vehicles and tested in a long-term underground mining demonstration. How It Works Separate, spring-actuated brakes, which press against brake discs, are used to stop the vehicle following power failure. To allow norm al movement of the vehicle, hydraulic oil under pres? sure from the vehicle's hydraulic system is directed to a spring? loaded piston in each emergency brake housing. That pressure causes the piston to compress the spring and relieves the spring pressure against the puck, thereby allowing the brake disc to turn freely. See Figure 1 A. If the electrical power fails or if the machine is turned off, a valve in the hydraulic line to the emergency brakes opens. That valve, shown as ?Solenoid Valve (automatic)" in Figure 1, which is normally held closed by its electrical solenoid while the vehicle is electrically powered, is opened by the spring in the valve assembly. A central requirement for using simulation models is the need for retrospect testing to validate experimental conclusions. Acceptance of a model by managers and safety practitioners is more likely to depend on its tested performance in-the field rather than on the underlying logic or the validity aspects of the model itself. It is here that simulation bridges the gap between theory and useful design procedures. The original version of the rail haulage sub-assembly was success¬fully tested in the field (Sanford, 1969). However, the case studies that were described here involved single-stage haulage and restricted jobtypes from UGMHS. Since this report together with Volume VI (Production Subsystem) describes extensive changes and modifications to the rail haulage sub-assembly and UGMHS, field tests were necessary to verify both the rail model and the linking concepts to the Produc¬tion Sub-system. Mine Description The candidate mine selected for model verification works the 6 1/2 foot Pittsburgh seam. Shaft openings are used for manways and ventilation and a dual compartment slope for materials handling. In the bottom half of the slope, a hoist with track handles supplies and equipment. In the upper half, a 42 inch belt conveyor travelling at 450 fpm moves coal from a rotary dump to the surface. The immediate roof is shale with the first 12 inches taken during development mining. About 4500 raw tons are produced daily from seven face units and one spare working three shifts. At seven of the sections,

Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

"The Anhydrite ProblemThe Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment station of the Bureau of Mines at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N. J. has recently undertaken a study of the chemical and physical properties of anhydrite having in view its wider utilization anhydrite (CaSO4) in contact with water at ordinary temperature and pressure rehydrates, slowly forming gypsum (CaSO4.2H42O). In nature this is an extremely slow process, and laboratory experiments are being conducted to determine methods of accelerating the rehydration. The tests recorded herein cover one this study, and while they are negative in character in so far as the major problem is concerned, certain facts established by the tests, bearing on the stability relations of gypsum and anhydrite seem sufficiently important to be placed on record.Early Researches on Gypsum and Anhydrite.It is to Lavoisiar that we are the first scientific study of the calculation and hardening of plaster of Paris. He sums up his experiments in the following passage: ""If gypsum, which has been deprived of its water of by means of heat, is again treated with water (to make what is commonly called mortar) it takes it up with avidity, rapid and irregular crystallization occurs, and the small crystals which are formed are so entangled in each other that a very hard mass results."" Later, he observed that the dehydration of gypsum occurs in two stages: three-fourths of the combined water is much more easily driven out than the last fourth. LeChatalier first determined the temperature decomposition accurately, his method was as follows: Pulverized gypsum was placed in a glass tube in the middle of a paraffin bath, the temperature of which was raised in a progressive and regular manner. A thermometer gave at each instant the temperature the salt, and the passage of the mercury column past each division of —co. was cared by a registering chronograph. The rise in temperature was except at 128°C. and 168°C. where breaks occurred."

The mineral industry in Burundi continued to be a minor contributor to the 1980 gross domestic product (GDP) estimated at $293 million in constant 1970 prices.2 Mineral export revenues, primarily from cassiterite, increased by a factor of 15 between 1979-80, reaching approximately $434,000 by yearend 1980. Gold, bastnasite, colombite-tantalite, and wolfremite continued to be exploited on a small scale, using manual and semimechanical methods. Despite a sharp decline in mining activities during 1979, attributed to a lack o? profitability and shortage of construction materials, the mining sector exhibited signs of recovery during 1980. The mineral exploration budget grew 32% over 1979 levels and was equivalent to approximately $42,000 in 1980. In addition, the Burundi Geographical Institute (IGE BU) was created in September 1980 and given responsibilities to collect cartographic, topographic, hydrogeologic, and other geomorphological data., SONIBUROM, the Burundian and Romanian Government joint mineral corporation, conducted mineral deposit inventories during 1979-80 and has been charged with exploiting some of these as yet unspecified resource areas. Another Burundian-Romanian effort, called Mabaya-Butahana, was initiated to search for gold deposits. Meanwhile on the Ruzizi plain, alluvial gold prospecting, with an estimated grade between 0.2 to 1.0 gram per ton, was carried out on a small scale.

The roof bolt system of a mine, if properly selected and installed, can allow for better roof control and reduce the potential for roof falls. Because of this potential to reduce roof falls and improve ground control conditions, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has an interest in the types of roof bolts that are used by the coal industry. Further, NIOSH has conducted research into how various support parameters can affect the number of roof falls that occur, including support type. Today, the five main types of roof bolts installed in U.S. coal mines are mechanical anchor bolts, point-anchor or resin-assisted mechanical anchor bolts, torque-tension bolts, combination bolts, and fully grouted resin rebar. This paper describes each support in detail. Because of the importance of resin in the functioning of the majority of bolts installed, resin grouts are also discussed. Further, trends in the types of roof bolts used are reviewed. Over the last 10 years, the significant trend has been the large reduction in the relative number of mechanical anchor bolts that are installed. These bolts have been replaced mainly by the resin-grouted rebar system. Data are also presented to show the impact of these changes in bolting on the number of roof falls.

During the past 10 years the Bureau of Mines has had a broad experience in the tasting and inspection of electric motors for gaol-cutting machines, cowl drills, storage-battery locomotives and other equipment Which is used in mines where explosive mixtures of methane and air may be encountered. From this experience the Bureau's engineers have reached the conclusion that the most satisfactory method of protecting a motor so as to prevent any sparks resulting from rough commutator, loose contacts or short-circuits in it, from igniting he surrounding atmosphere, is to totally inclose the motor with a substantial casing; having flanged joints. These joints should be metal-to-metal contact so that the shortest path from the interior to the exterior Of the casing is not less than one inch in length. On account of this experience with mining machinery, the Bureau has been asked whether an equal or loss degree of protection would be sufficient for motors for service in or about places such as refineries, gasoline filling stations, cleaning establishments and pumping stations, or in any place where there is liklihood of explosive mixtures of gasoline or naphtha vapors and air accumulating.

Raw non fuel minerals produced in the United States during 1981 had an estimated value of $25 billion, about the same as that of 1980. In terms of 1980 dollars. the value of minerals produced during 1981 was $23 billion.2 This chapter includes tables for 1980 that were not available for publication in the 1980 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include the corresponding tables for 1981. The underlying causes of the overall decline in U.S. nonfuel mine production during 1981 were varied, but the common factor was the worldwide recession. In some cases the decline was traced to foreign competition. For example, iron ore production was lower in part because of increased imports of steel products such as coiled steel sheet. Another problem experienced by the domestic mining industry was the continuing difficulty in attracting capital. This was due in part to the attractiveness of investments outside the mining industry, such as short-term, high-interest securities. Another reason was the importation of commodities from countries where overall costs were lower because of such factors as high ore grade, lower taxes, lower wages, government subsidies, and less stringent safety and environmental regulations.

The Government's ban on all commercial mining operations, except for small-scale artisan exploitation of alluvial gold deposits, continued throughout 1985. Minerals produced were kaolin and lime for agricultural uses, and experimental peat harvesting for energy applications. The total value of the minerals produced during the year was estimated at $1.1 million .2 In early 1985, an agreement between the Government and Amoco International Oil Co. was ratified for a petroleum exploration concession covering 248,000 hectares of Lake Tanganyika. Onshore exploration in the Ruzizi Plain was already under way the last half of 1985. By yearend, enough seismic information was available that Amoco hoped to complete data analyses, determine onshore drilling sites, and begin drilling operations before the end of 1986. Also to begin in the latter part of 1986 were seismic studies of Lake Tanganyika. Throughout 1985, Amoco officials were negotiating with the Government of Zaire for expanding the exploration acreage into that country's portion of northern Lake Tanganyika and the Ruzizi Plain. An agreement between Amoco and Zaire could have important beneficial economic implications for both Zaire and Burundi, and onshore seismic work in Zaire logistically supported from Bujumburi could begin almost immediately.

Several short color films describing new technology developed through Bureau of Mines research are available on a loan basis. The films review results of Bureau research programs aimed at aiding the minerals industry by increasing mine productivity, ensuring worker health and safety, and enhancing minerals recovery, processing and recycling. Most of the films are available in a choice of for mats: 16mm film, ½" VHS cassette tape, or ¾" U-matic tape. The films are loaned by the Bureau of Mines free of charge; borrowers are requested to pay only the return postage and for any damage to the films. All titles are also available for purchase in 16mm or videotape formats. Mines in the western United States have had limited choices for standing support. Wood cribs were often too soft and unstable. The introduction of the Can support in the earl v 1990s provided an effective alternative, (lilt/ it remains the dominant form of tail¬gate support. Water-filled prestressing cells are now used to cap the Can and preload it to provide an active roof load. The Cluster Prop, consisting of three timber wedge props bundled to¬gether; provides more capacity than (m equivalent sized Call support and improves transport efficiency. However the Cluster Prop is less stable and does not maintain a consistent load throughout its loading profile. Pumpable roof supports are another alternative support, but the \' have not been proven in high deformation en¬vironments. This paper compares the performance characteristics o f these various support systems.
