This report is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on exploration, development, mining methods, and costs at various mines in the United States. It describes operations at the Black Rock mine, Wah Chang Mining Corp., Mono County, Calif. The purpose of these reports is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on mining methods, practices, and costs. The Black Rock tungsten mine of the Wah Chang Mining Corp. is 33 miles north of Bishop, Calif., in the Benton Range, Mono County, Calif. The property was acquired in August 1950 and a well-planned program of exploration, development, and exploitation resulted in a good production record with low costs. Operations were halted in July 1957, about 6 months after suspension of the tungsten purchase program by the Federal Government.

An arc plasma reactor, constructed and used for studying extractive metallurgical processing, was adapted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to separate gases of different masses by using the high rate of plasma rotation. With argon and helium as input gases, peripheral reactor outlet ports had a measured average increase of about 10 pet in argon concentration relative to helium with the plasma on compared with plasma off for the same gas inlet concentrations in both cases. Approximately the same average increase in argon concentration occurred from the peripheral outlet port compared with a central outlet probe with the plasma on. There was no difference with the plasma off.

Preliminary Bureau of Mines studies of mafic igneous rocks collected from the Rabbit Creek area, northwestern Alaska, indicated concentrations of platinum (412 to 1,406 ppb) and palladium (343 to 892 ppb) in five of eight samples analyzed. The samples represent boulders and cobbles of mafic/ultramafic rocks from this locality. They are not from outcrop. Petrologically, (on the hand specimen scale) the samples are crudely to well-layered and are troctolitic ± gabbroie in character, with primary igneous mafic minerals strongly altered. Small patches of interstitial sulfide minerals, including chalcopyrite, bornite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and covellite are associated with these altered zones and elsewhere through the specimens. Copper values ranged from 0.1 to 0.3 pct in samples analyzed semiquantitatively; nickel, cobalt, and chromium contents are low. Chemical, mine alogic, and petrographic relationships suggest that the rocks of similar character outcropping in northwestern Alaska could also be considered as prospective for- concentrations or platinum, palladium, and copper.

Preliminary calculations show an economic advantage in using nuclear energy to supply the endothermic heat required for gasifying coal. It should be noted that the various assumptions used in preparing these calculations must undergo further evaluation through additional engineering design and research. The proposed system for gasification is the indirect process cycle with helium heated in a nuclear reactor and passed through an exchanger-type gasifier for the reaction of coal and steam to form CO (carbon monoxide) and H2 (hydrogen gas).

"During the mining process, the insitu material is broken into different size ranges, from very, large pieces to very fine particles. Some of the fine particles become airborne. In underground coal mining, airborne respirable. dust is associated with health and safety of the miners: The amount and size distributions of airborne dust are important parameters to effective dust control measures. The design of underground mine experiments, including sampling procedures and sample analyses methods to determine these parameters are presented in this paper.. A total of fifteen continuous miner cuts were sampled. The amount of dust generated during the cutting process and the relationship between total and respirable airborne dust concentrations and amounts are examined.The amount of respirable dust airborne is on the average only. 0.016% of the respirable dust generated. On the average, 61% of the total .airborne dust measured is in the respirable size range. The amount of respirable airborne' is on the average 36% of the respirable size fraction in the total airborne dust. For equal proportion of rock and coal material cut, rock contributes about twice as much fines (<0.22 mm) as coal. Additional fundamental research is necessary to further the understanding of 'the airborne propensity of respirable dusts in mine atmospheres.INTRODUCTIONMining is a sequential process of breaking, gathering, loading, and transporting the in-situ .materials.' In underground coal mines, duet in both the non-respirable and respirable size ranges is generated and entrained in every phase of the process. Even though large amounts of dust particles' adhere to run-of-mine coals, part of the dust generated becomes airborne (Cheng and Zukovich, 1973). Studies have shown that bit type affects the amount of dust generated'(Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Kurth et al., 1975; Roepke et al., 1976; Stecklein et al., 1982; and Khair and 'Reddy, 1986). Deep cutting can reduce airborne dust generation (Black and Schmidt, 1977 arid, Black et 1978). Mechanical properties of. coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. Laboratory studies have shown that Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) of the coal has a relationship with the amount of respirable. dust generated (Beafi and Ramani, 1979; Moore and Bise, 1984; and Moore, 1986). However, these relationships have not yet been validated with' data from the mines. The amount of dust airborne depends on a number of factors. Suppression of the airborne propensity of dust by water sprays is'widely practiced and is very effective. Water flow rate; pressure and configuration of water sprays have been identified as major factors affecting dust capture by sprays (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Courtney et al., 1978; and Kissell et al., 1979). Ventilation is a very important means of controlling the dust level at the coal face (Jayaraman, 1977). According to a National Academy of Sciences study (1980), the mechanism of dust generation and the process by which the generated dust becomes airborne are complex and not yet completely understood coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. This report comprises a brief outline of the experimental cracking of natural gas in a water-gas generator at Louisville, Kentucky, and a discussion of the results obtained. The work was done under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Louisville Gas & Electric Co. The re-forming or partial cracking of natural gas is not a new process, but one which has been employed in the manufacture of city gas for a number of years. However, the apparatus used heretofore was not a water-gas generator containing a bed of ignited fuel, but instead it was a plurality of connected chambers containing spaced and arranged checker bricks, with means for heating the bricks and for admitting the natural gas. The procedure previously followed was quite different from that used during the tests at Louisville; likewise the results obtained were different. It is not uncommon for companies distributing natural gas to provide gas-generating equipment for producing manufactured gas which is used, mixed with natural gas, during periods of peak demand. Because this equipment is idle much of the time, in some instances being in use only for a few days a year, some of the gas companies have considered using it, during off-peak periods, in the manufacture of some gaseous products and for carbon black which might he produced and marketed with profit. There is one plant of this kind at Louisville. Kentucky. Its maintenance in condition ready to be operated is necessary because of the limited supply of natural gas and because of the variation in demand. The engineers of the Louisville Gas & Electric Co. considered in particular the possibility of cracking natural gas in a water-gas generator by injecting the gas into the incandescent fuel bed, thereby producing a gas comprised largely of hydrogen (H2) and carbon black, an appreciable amount of which is entrained in the gas as it leaves the generator, Because power and gas are available at low prices, Louisville was believed to be a satisfactory location for a plant which could use hydrogen. It was evident that this method of treating natural gas might directly benefit the gas company by: 1. Lowering, the cost of manufactured gas.

Automatic control instruments were utilized by the Bureau of Mines for routine assays of large numbers of oil shale samples and other bituminous materials. The standard Fischer assay method was automated by automatically controlling the heating cycles of a battery of 12 electric heaters with electronic controllers and programmers. The condensers were cooled with a modified automatically controlled refrigeration bath. The complete assembly consisted of 12 retort units, necessary control instruments, and the refrigeration bath. This equipment was capable of producing more consistent results than those previously obtained with the gas-heated retorts and of increasing the output of assays substantially with no increase in operating personnel.

The practice of roof bolting or rock bolting to stabilize rock surrounding underground excavations has increased tremendously within a few years. This widespread application has led to many questions concerning the mechanics of bolting and has pointed up the need for a quantitative method of designing bolting systems. To answer these questions a research program was initiated to determine the principles of roof bolting. The first problem chosen for investigation was the use of bolts to reinforce bedded roof, since the great majority of bolts are used under these conditions. The attack employed is a combination of theoretical and experimental stress analysis. Centrifugal testing of models was chosen as the experimental method because it is particularly suited to the study of stratified roof. This report describes the models, the experimental method, and the model-prototype relations. By using dimensional analysis, a general expression for a roof-bolting design formula in terms of the structural variables has been obtained. Certain model-prototype similarity requirements have been relaxed, thereby minimizing the number of variables to be studied and extending the applicability of quantitative test data to a large class of full size structures.

To enable the mining industry to be kept informed as to the availability of equipment developed by mining equipment manufacturers in their constant endeavor to keep a step ahead of changes in mining techniques, the Bureau of Mines periodically issues lists of equipment approved subsequent to the last previous listing. The present list covers those approvals issued during calendar years 1953 and 1954. It supplements Bulletin 543, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953. The procedure established in Bulletin 543 of numbering items in each category consecutively to indicate the chronological order of the approvals has been continued in this circular. Information on approvals issued later than January 1, 1955 may be obtained by referring to Coal Age, a monthly magazine issued by the McGraw-Hill Publishing Co.

"This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of the sampling efficiency of a blunt cylindrical sampler oriented with respect to the oncoming flow. The number of particles sampled by the cylindrical blunt sampler and an isokinetic sampler is measured using the TSI Aerodynamic Particle Sizer. A technique is described to conven the ratio of the particles sampled into the sampling efficiency. The experimental data thus obtained is then compared with the impaction model of Vincent and Mark (1982) with the empirical constant determined from our experiment.. The comparison shows excellent agreement for 0° and 90° orientation.1.0 IntroductionCylindrical dust samplers are widely used in practice to determine the concentration of the airborne particulate matter. The sampler is simply a means to collect particles from the ambient, whose concentration is subsequently measured by some size selective techniques. Gravimetric and optical techniques are the two most commonly used methods to measure the particle sizes. While impactors are used in gravimetric analysis, Aerodynamic Particle Sizer, Aerosizer. Electron microscope, Coulter Counter etc. use the optical method to measure the particle sizes. The Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) and the Aerosizer are the new generation devices which employ the time of flight of particles within intersecting laser beams to determine the particle size.The introduction of the sampler in the free stream disturbs the flow pattern due to two distinct actions of the sampler on the fluid stream: one of them results due to the conformity of the flow to the geometry of the circular cylinder and the second one is caused by the flow into the suction orifice. If the sampler performance is determined by the number of particles entering into the sampler inlet relative to the number of particles present in the free stream, then the particle trajectory outside the sampler and into the inlet is the deterministic factor for the sampling efficiency. The particle trajectory inside the sampler is not important in this case."

This study describes five fatal accidents so unusual in occurrence that the chain of circumstances bringing them about may never be duplicated. The intent of this publication is to illustrate that everyone working underground is subjected, at all times, to definite inherent mining hazards and that safety devices, though provided, often are ineffective or not used. It is hoped that a study of these fatal accidents in bituminous-coal mines will show workers and safety engineers that nothing can be taken for granted. Safety planning with continuous study can prevent these unusual accidents as well as the routine recurring types, which cause the majority of coal-mining injuries. The treacherous, fatalistic philosophy that "it can&apos;t happen to me" or that "when my time&apos;s up I&apos;ll get it regardless of what I do," still prevails among individuals and even safety engineers. The individual or safety man who believes in luck as applied to safety should not read any further, since this study was written for the sincere, safety-minded individual who accepts the prevention of all accidents as a challenge to his knowledge, initiative, persuasiveness, and salesmanship.

"This paper presents an analysis of the dynamics of bit wear on the productivity of the continuous miners. Two field surveys have been carried out. The first survey was to assess the impact of bit wear on productivity and production cost. The second survey was to study the wear characteristics of the cutting tool (i.e. magnitude, forms, and mechanisms of bit wear). Primary factors affecting bit wear is identified and laboratory experiments were carried out to study the effects of some of these primary factors on wear in detail. Results indicate that bit wear has a significant effect on the productivity of the continuous miners. Furthermore under the severe geologic conditions (i.e. cutting rock partings and roof and floor rocks) bit wear not only hampers the productivity, but also increases the production cost due to a higher number of bit consumption. This study also indicated that bit wear accelerates beyond 20% of the conical height loss which corresponds to 7% of the weight loss. This increase rate of wear is an indicative of higher abrasion between bit body and cutting material, resulting in a more dusty environment.IntroductionThe high demand for coal production has increased the need for mechanized coal cutting in underground coal mines. Continuous miners have been used in the United States of America for nearly four decades and now presently more than 2000 are in operation. Almost half of the underground coal production of the country is by continuous miners. Today, competition in the coal industry has increased, due mainly to market conditions and legal restrictions, thus placing an emphasis on production, efficiency, and safety. The use of continuous miners has resulted in the generation of respirable coal dust which causes black lung in mine workers. On the other hand, bit wear presents a serious problem as it affects productivity and economy.Much research in the put has been done on energy requirements and mechanism of energy dissipation for ideal rock fragmentation in the cutting process. Recently, dust hazards in underground coal mines as a result of coal cutting has been a great concern to mining engineers as well as environmentalist of the country. In past, much emphasize has been given to fragmentation mechanics (Khair et al, 1989), dust generation due to regrinding (Khair and Xu, 1991) and dust generation due to bit wear (Khair, Xu. and Ahmad, 1992). These studies concluded that dust concentration increased considerably after a bit weight loss of 7% and thereafter the bit should be replaced. Thus, legal restriction by the Mine Health and Safety Administration for the respirable dust concentration in underground might be a factor deciding the level or rate of production using continuous miners. While efforts in research are on reducing dust generation, it is also important and relevant to study bit wear in more detail.Bit wear is affected by three major groups of parameters: (1) machine operating parameters, (2) insitu conditions and (3) properties of rock. Again, past studies have shown that depth of cut, material of tool, position of water jet and velocity of the rotating drum are very important machine operating parameters. The content of the rock/coal material is important as bit wear is usually due to abrasion or adhesion. Diffusive wear becomes dominant only when the temperature exceeds the sensitive range i.e critical temperature. Mechanical tools have indicated that a rise in temperature is a function of drum velocity, properties of cutting material (rock or coal) and properties of tool. Bit wear due to chemical reaction and oxidation art almost negligible in coal cutting."

The Bureau of Mines investigated variations in the activation energy for the carbon monoxide reduction of magnetite and ferrous oxide with respect to the state of aggregation of the oxide material. Reduction phenomena can only be satisfactorily explained by including an adsorption step in the reduction process. Summation of the values of the exothermic heat of chemisorption and the variable apparent activation energy for reduction yields a nearly constant value of about 50 kcal for either ferrous oxide or magnetite regardless of whether they are aggregated in pelletized form or coarsely crystalline particles.

The Virginia copper district is situated in North Carolina and Virginia. It contains many mines and prospects that were active at the turn of the nineteenth century. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic-minerals program, began a project in September 1942 to investigate and explore the most promising of the mines in the district. The Seaboard, High Hill, Durgy, and Blue Wing mines were the sites of the main project activity. This report deals principally with these four mines. Drilling did not discover any new ore shoots but indicated the persistence of known ore shoots in depth. There appears to be no indication of impoverishment of copper with depth.

Pilot-plant tests have been in progress at the Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, Pa., on the recovery of manganese from open-hearth slag.3/4/5/ In the process, 1 the slag is first reduced in a blast furnace to make a high-phosphorus spiegeleisen containing 12 to 22 percent manganese. A slag containing 55 to 60 percent manganese is made from this spiegel by oxidation in a basic-lined converter. The metal from this blowing operation contains about 3 percent phosphorus, 1 percent manganese, and less than 1 percent carbon. Economic efficiency in the manganese-recovery process requires that this metal be converted into steel. Because of its high phosphorus content the metal is suitable for blowing in a basic-lined converter. In most of the tests described in this report, metal of this composition was used as the starting material in a 1-ton, side-blown, basic-lined converter. Although basic-lined converters are not used for steel production in the United states, in Europe a considerable portion of the steel is made in them. Open hearths largely have replaced converters for steelmaking in the United States; mainly because open-hearth steels have better physical properties than converter steels because of lower nitrogen and phosphorus contents. However, by improving converter design and operating technique during the past 15 years, metallurgists have found that low-nitrogen steels with physical properties equal to open-hearth steels can be produced in converters.6/ Tests at Jones & Laughlin steel Corp. with side-blown, acid-lined converters of 3 and 22 tons capacity showed that steel with a low nitrogen content comparable to that of open hearths operating on scrap charges could be made by surface blowing.7/

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), as part of a comprehensive program to improve mine safety through the widespread acceptance of careful excavation principles in drifting, have revisited standard drift round design concepts. Although the initial emphasis was on contour row design and providing improved design tools for blasting with de-coupled charges, the focus has broadened into the development of a general gas pressure-based drift round design approach. The concept of a damage radius (Rd) for a given explosive-hole-rock mass combination is introduced. With the damage radius as the basic building block, the blast holes are positioned on the face, beginning with the buffer row, to achieve the desired excavation size, shape and smoothness. The design of the contour row of holes is also performed using a pressure-based approach. The paper presents in some detail the overall approach and the required gas pressure-based design equations.

During the last three years the use of ethylene glycol dinitrate4 (E.G.D.) as at low-freeze (L.F.) agent in place of nitropolyglycerin has become common in the manufacture of explosives of the dynamite type. The usual proportion of D. G. D. in the explosive "oil" is 25 per cent; the remainder, 75 per cant, is regular nitroglycerin. These proportions were probably selected as a continuation of the practice of 25 per cent nitropolyglycerin and 75 per cent regular nitroglycerin.

"INTRODUCTION It is a recognized fact that in the coal-mining industry coal dust must be allayed to promote the safety and health of underground workers. The Bureau of Mines has been cognizant of the hazards of coal dust for many years, and the necessity of controlling such dust was acknowledged when the Federal Mine Safety Code was formulated. Accumulations of coal dust increase the explosion hazard in a bituminous-coal mine and facilitate the propagation of an explosion. Some of the coal dust produced in mining is inhaled by the workers and contributes to respiratory infection. Impairment of vision and personal discomfort resulting from working in dense clouds of coal dust reflect unfavorably on the efficiency of workmen. Considerable coal dust, originating at the working face, is carried in the ventilating current and deposited elsewhere in the mine, thereby increasing the explosion hazard. It is apparent, therefore, that if coal dust could be allayed effectively at its points of origin, the dust-explosion hazard in bituminous-coal mines would be reduced greatly.Although dust control is practiced in many bituminous-coal and lignite mines, the extent and effectiveness of control for the, entire industry-is not generally known. The purpose of this circular is to present such information clearly, and to encourage coal-mine operators to install dust- allaying equipment.Factual data on dust-allaying practices at working faces in a large number of the bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States were .compiled from reports on recent Federal inspections of these mines, The information is presented in tabular form to permit review of the dust-allaying practices of a substantial part of the industry, by States, and also according to employment, and loading practice."

Calculations based on data related to the electrostatic precipitator illustrate the variation in the electric forces on a particle with change in position in the ionized field. The feeble forces in some separators are explained by the low field intensity at midpoint locations between the electrodes. When the particles are in contact with the exterior surface of a rotating cylindrical electrode, a high field intensity at the electrode surface combined with the image charge results in large electric forces. The permissible feed velocity increases as the square root of the electrode diameter, providing high values in efficiency and feed rate capacity, particularly in surface-to-mass ratio separations such as are encountered in secondary materials recycling operations.
