This paper, which describes the practice of milling custom ore, in addition to that produced under company and lease operations in the Tom Reed mines, is one of a series 'being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. "Purpose and Nature of Tests:The rapidly increasing use of motor vehicles and trucks in the United States is creating an entirely new problem in the proper ventilation of tunnels, subways and other confined spaces through which such machines must pass. This problem has become of immediate importance because a tunnel 3,000 ft. long is being designed to pass under the Hudson River between New York City and New Jersey. Another tunnel at Pittsburgh 5,700 ft. long through the South Hills, is already under construction, and a third tunnel, 6,000 ft. between Boston and Past Boston is proposed. It is probably that other tunnels will be started in various parts of the United States in the near future.The ventilation of such tunnels is a serious matter, on account of the poisonous nature of automobile exhaust gases. It not uncommon to read about finding a man dead in his garage. Generally this happens on a cold, winter morning, after he has been running the engine with the doors and windows closed."

Methane can be a significant hazard in coal mine longwalling operations and extensive methane mitigation techniques are employed by coal mine operators. Reservoir modeling techniques are used to better understand the liberation and migration of methane from the surrounding rocks towards the mine ventilation system. The caved rock behind the advancing longwall face, known as the gob, can contain high void ratios, providing high permeability flow paths to the methane. The gob is progressively compacted by the weight of the overburden, resulting in a reduction in the void ratio and associated permeability. Estimating the permeability distribution within the gob poses challenges due to its complexity. The authors have developed a new methodology to determine both horizontal and vertical variations in the permeability of the gob. Variations of the permeability in the vertical direction are based on a model of caving and block rotation, which considers the effect of block dimensions and fall height on the void ratio. Gob compaction by the overburden and associated permeability changes are determined from a three-dimensional geo-mechanical model which simulates the gob as a strain hardening granular material. The resulting three-dimensional permeability distribution in the gob is then transferred to a reservoir model. The paper demonstrates the application of the method and shows that reasonable results are obtained when compared to empirical experience and measurements.

Previous studies of magnetic separation of pyrite from coals have been reviewed critically. Magnetic susceptibilities of United States coals of differing rank have been measured. The effects of crushing, magnetic mixing, drying, weathering, and heat treatment on the enhancement of the magnetism of pyrite have been analyzed. The importance of size distribution of pyrite in the coal and the necessity of crushing to liberate the pyrite has been discussed. It has been found that the inherent susceptibilities of the carbonaceous, mineral-free portions of coals (? -0.5 X 10-6 in cgs units) and of relatively pure pyrite isolated from coals (? -0.3 X 10-6) do not permit efficient separation of pyrite from coal; the average susceptibility of the magnetic fraction of coal must be raised to 3 X 10-6. Friction forces encountered in crushing sedimentary pyrite embedded in coal do not increase its susceptibility. Subsequent weathering or heat treatment below 400° C leads to the formation of iron sulfate and hence increases the effective paramagnetism of pyrite. Ferromagnetic compounds of iron are not formed in significant quantities at temperatures below 400° C. The degree of liberation and apparent susceptibility of pyrite are the most important parameters in its separation. It is concluded that effective beneficiation of coals can be achieved by magnetic separation. A sufficient increase in the susceptibility can be achieved by converting less than 0.1 percent of pyrite into ferromagnetic compounds of iron. Such conversions occur only at temperatures >500° C. An investigation of the dielectric properties of coals and pyrite in the frequency range 0.1 to 60 Mhz indicates that the imaginary dielectric constant of the pyrite is about 100 times larger than that of coal. Exploratory experiments indicate that pyrite can be selectively heated to temperatures above 500° C without appreciable rise in the temperature of coal. It appears that dielectric heating of coals in the Ghz frequency range is the most feasible method of enhancing the paramagnetism of pyrite.

This report presents information on 77 waterflood projects in 31 Montana oilfields. The study shows the locations of the projects, the sources and amounts of injection water, and the results in oil produced. Waterflooding, a secondary recovery technique, began in Montana about 40 years after the initial oil discovery in 1920. Often, the difference between water disposal by injection and pressure maintenance operations is not clear. Water injected at the projects in 1973 was 157.7 million barrels. In 1973, the 31 fields having waterflood projects produced 28.3 million barrels of oil valued at $88.4 million. Both in volume and value, this represents over 80 percent of the State's 1973 oil output. The projects are making possible the recovery of additional oil, thus contributing to the conservation of oil and lessening the impact of the current oil shortage.

This Bureau of Mines report describes methods to electrodeposit erosion-resistant titanium diboride coatings from molten alkali metal borate baths at 900° C. These coatings have been shown to be highly resistant to material loss during impingement with high-velocity alumina and silicon carbide powders, and they show promise as protective coatings to reduce metal loss in erosive chemical environments, such as coal gasification systems. The most erosion-resistant coatings were prepared on nickel, Inconel, and molybdenum from an electrolyte containing LiBO2, NaBO2, Na2Ti03, and TiO2. The best coatings were deposited at current densities of [~]20 ma/cm2, using titanium or titanium diboride anodes. Erosion-resistant coatings were shown to exhibit (1) a high degree of crystallographic orientation along the (100) or (110) planes, (2) a chromium impurity level of less than 3 pct, and (3) a uniform, smooth, consolidated surface appearance when viewed under a microscope or by scanning electron microscopy. Optical spectroscopic studies of the molten electrolyte suggest that the lower valent (+3) titanium ion predominates in the baths.

Underground accumulations of slimes in the Henderson mine are routed to two large collection pits where they are dewatered and consolidated by application of direct current. Densified material is then removed to ore cars by rubber-tired front-end loaders and transported out of the mine. This Bureau of Mines report describes the electrical dewatering installation and compares its efficiency of operation with that predicted from preliminary laboratory studies performed by the Bureau. Direct current from a 150-kw rectifier (applied for 44 hours at 400 amperes and 65 to 70 volts) converted slimes containing 25.3 percent solids to material ranging from 44 to 65 percent solids. Better results can be expected if the ramp and front sections of the pits are treated separately, using higher current density.

Present-day interest in the rare-earth elements and their compounds, for both metallurgical and ceramic uses, makes it highly desirable to accumulate basic thermodynamic data that can be applied to theoretical considerations of the processing of these substances. Such data still are seriously lacking. This Bureau of Mines paper reports the results of high-temperature heat content measurements of the sesquioxides of four rare-earth elements--europium, gadolinium, neodymium, and samarium--and of the closely related element, yttrium. The temperature ranges covered by the measurements are as follows: Monoclinic Eu2O3, 298°-1,802° K. Cubic Eu203, 298°-1,350° K. Monoclinic Gd203, 298-1,802° K. Cubic Gd203, 298°-1,550° K. As part of research conducted in its mission to effect pollution abatement, the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, is developing a dewatering technique that allows for disposal of phosphatic clay wastes, for reuse of water now lost with clays, and for reclamation of mined land. The technique utilizes a high-molecular-weightnonionic polyethylene oxide polymer (PEO) that has the ability to flocculate and dewater phosphatic clay wastes. A synergistic flocculation study was made to determine whether a portion of PEO could be replaced by other reagents. Several groups of reagents were tested: (1) those that increased the zeta potential of the phosphatic clay wastes; (2) those capable of hydrogen bonding; and (3) those which flocculated the phosphatic clay waste. Reduction in PEO consumption occurred only with addition of those reagents able to flocculate the slime. The use of natural guar gums resulted in a lower PEO requirement and also yielded a dewatered product of higher solids content, 43 to 45 percent, versus 33 to 35 percent obtained with PEO alone.

Mineral industry activity in many of the smaller Caribbean Island countries has remained minimal. For this reason, specific references to Bermuda, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and the Netherlands Antilles have been removed from textual and trade table presentations. Any significant future developments will be reported as they occur. Readers are referred to earlier Minerals Yearbook editions for previous information. Table 1 production statistics have been modified in some instances. References to certain nonmetal commodities were eliminated because information has often been unreliable. Their inclusion in table 1 was not considered important to either an overview of the area or to compatibility with volume I of the Minerals Yearbook.

The cheapest method of handling gravel in placer mining operations is by hydraulic mining . In working gravel deposits by hydraulic mining , it is essential that an abundant supply of water under sufficient head can be economically developed and that there is sufficient grade for sluice boxes and for disposal of the tailing . Without dumping facilities , simple hydraulic mining is an impossibility . The cost of hydraulic mining may range from 2 cents a yard under favorable condıtions to 12 or even 20 cents under less favorable conditions and to 35 cents or more a yard in Alaska , according to conditions of operation , and if frozen gravel is encountered . When it is necessary to elevate gravel , the costs may exceed 60 cents a cubic yard . When the natural conditions do not permit of hydraulic pining proper , other methods of elevating the grade are employed , some of which are described below . Bucket dredging has replaced hydraulic mining in importance in California and other states where hydraulic mining was once extensively carried on , and is by far the cheapest method of elevating gravel when mechanical methods are required and the physical conditions are suitable for dredging . Dredging costs vary greatly under the different conditions encountered , and the total amount of gold to be recovered must of course be enough to warrant the cost of a dredge installation . "The Bureau of Mines for some time advocated the firing of all blasts in coal mines as single shots, and this method of firing is the general practice in American bituminous-coal mines. All single shots can be fired with permissible single-shot units so designed that they will not ignite mixtures of methane and air.If several shots in a face are fired singly it is necessary to return the face after each shot. In some mines having steeply pitching coal seams, this may be dangerous or even impossible, under these conditions shots are usually fired simultaneously.Several shots cannot be fixed simultaneously with permissible single-shot blasting units, and safe types of multiple shots blasters are not readily available. This means that the firing of multiple shots in gassy mines is usually accompanied by the possibility of gas ignition as the blast occurs.Tests have been made at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station to determine the possibility of developing safe types of multiple-shot units suitable for such use, or of applying other type safely in gassy sections of mines where firing shots singly is impracticable.The tests may be divided into the following four groups:1. Tests to demonstrate hazard in the use of existing types of multiple-shot units of the portable generator type.2. Tests to show the electrical characteristics of multiple-shot generator units relative to the possibility of preventing igniting sparks and of modifying the design and application of such units in furthering safety."

Since the passage of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, the Bureau of Mines has made many advances in mine communications. These efforts have resulted in the following developments and demonstrations: Surface-to-surface electromagnetic transmission of baseband voice signals through overburdens as deep as 600 feet. This transmission was achieved with equipment from the Interim Mine Rescue and Survival System Program, and demonstrated that baseband voice communications could be obtained through these overburdens in the absence of mine-generated noise; that is, when the mine power system was shut off, However, during mine operational conditions, the mine-generated noise proved to be so large that effective baseband voice communications to the desired depths could not be effected.

In 1927 Coghill5 showed that there is considerable liberation of the iron oxide mineral from gangue when the Alabama red iron ores are ground to a size suitable for classification and tabling, but that there is not sufficient to make possible a high extraction and a high grade of concentrate. Coghill states: High extraction and high grade of concentrate cannot be obtained without grinding to a size comparable with flotation or cyanide practice. If grade of concentrate be sacrificed the grinding need not be so severe.

The National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has undertaken a collaborative study with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), withstand the underground coal mining environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. Apparatus tested included the CSE SR-100, the Draeger OXY-K Plus, the MSA Life-Saver 60, and the Ocenco EBA 6.5 and M-20. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSRs in the tenth phase of testing, from July 2004 to March 2006. The SCSRs were tested on a breathing and metabolic simulator and on a human subject walking on a treadmill. The tests performed in this study are not the tests used for certification (Title 42 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 84). The tests performed in this study continue until the apparatus are empty to enable comparison of new versus deployed apparatus. The method for obtaining deployed SCSRs for this evaluation was not a random selection from the deployed population of SCSRs. We sought older apparatus with visible environmental impact rather than newer apparatus, and we attempted to sample a wide range of deployment modes. Although the results of these tests are useful for observing performance of the tested SCSRs, they are not representative of all deployed SCSRs. This report is the last of 10 report phases begun in 1982. Previous reports describe phases 1 through 9 [Kyriazi et al. 1986; Kyriazi and Shubilla 1992, 1994, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006] A new evaluation protocol, with revised sampling strategies, test methods, and reporting procedures, is currently being designed to enhance the applicability of the results. The results of these studies suggest that the large majority of SCSRs that pass their inspection criteria can be relied upon to provide a safe level of life support for mine escape purposes. However, the storage and handling in the mining environment seems to have caused performance degradation in some of the apparatus. In this phase, phase 10, we found some CSE SR-100s (93 tested) that exhibited high CO2 levels, stuck-together breathing hoses, starter-O2 failure, breathing hose punctures and tears, high breathing pressures, and loose particulates in the breathing hose. The loose particulates caused coughing in human-subject tests. One MSA Life-Saver 60 (20 tested) in this phase had a stuck-open relief valve. One Ocenco EBA 6.5 (50 tested) had an unattached O2 supply hose. An unexplained phenomenon occurred with two Ocenco M-20s (20 tested): low O2 flow rates preventing their successful use. Almost all of the failures noted involved units that failed their inspection criteria.

"INTRODUCTION The Yancey-Crawford tract, located 1-1/2 nines east of Yancey station on the Norfolk & Western Railway in Rockingham County, Va. was from 1917 to 1941 considered an unusually promising manganese prospect. Because of the favorable geologic formations and because of the common occurrence of manganese in the district and Virginia's large production of these minerals from this area, geological report 3/ have listed this tract as the No. 1 prospect in the State. During World War I, extensive geologic studies were made to locate manganese deposits similar to those exploited at the Crimera mine near Waynesboro to alleviate this mineral shortage during the existing emergency.In September 1941 the Bureau of Mines started exploratory drilling on the tract in an effort to discover and block out reserves of manganese minerals as authorized by the 76th Congress under the Strategic Materials Act. After five drill holes wore sunk, the project was terminated October 1941."

Domestic production of greensand (glauconite) increased 15 percent in quantity and 13 percent in value compared with that of 1964. Since only two firms were in operation, statistics on production and sales for the year are not reported in order to avoid disclosure of individual company confidental data. The average annual production for the 5-year period 1961-65 was 4,306 tons valued at $200,200. The material was marketed for use as a soil conditioner and a water softener. An article of mineralogical interest was published concerning the New Zealand glauconites.2

Domestic sales of carbon black sustained the upward movement for the 4th consecutive year, reflecting the increased sales of motor vehicles during the same period. Sales of carbon black in the domestic market topped 2 billion pounds for the first time during 1965 and have more than doubled the output of 20 years earlier. By far the largest user of carbon black is the rubber industry. That use accounted for more than 94 percent of the carbon black consumption with the bulk of it being used in tire casings and tubes. Thus demand for carbon black is naturally sensitive to trends in the sales of passenger cars and other motor vehicles, Manufacturers of inks, paints, plastics, paper chemicals, and food are also important users of carbon black.

In overview, 1988 appeared to be the best year for the world's mineral industry since 1980, although the all-important petroleum component suffered severely from low prices. With this notable exception, the traditional statistical measures of mineral industry performance, namely production, trade, and consumption, reflected growth in most elements of the world mineral industry from crude material extraction through the gamut of downstream processing. Moreover, the growth was reasonably well distributed geographically, with many countries sharing in the substantial upturn in activity. World crude mineral output value was estimated at over $1,272 billion in current dollars ($1,090 billion in constant 1983 dollars). The value added by the processing component of the mineral industry raised the total value of the industry's output to an estimated $3,057 billion in current dollars ($2,620 billion in constant 1983 dollars). Less easily assessed was the value of mineral commodities moving in 1988's international world trade, particularly because of the declines in world crude oil and refinery product prices. It remained to be seen if increased volume and value in nonfuel mineral and coal exports, coupled with an increase in the volume of oil exports, would be adequate to offset the drop in oil prices. Whether or not the value of world mineral commodity trade topped the 1987 level of over $498 billion, an increase in the volume of mineral commodity trade was almost assured. Similarly, although comprehensive statistics were not avail-able on consumption of all mineral commodities in all countries, available data on selected major commodities in selected major countries suggested that not only had output of most mineral commodities advanced, but so too had consumption levels for most commodities.
