Comparing measurements from multiple seismographs, particularly when the instruments are deployed in a “side-by-side” situation, is often problematic. Measurements often differ by as much as a factor of two. These differences are attributed to issues related to calibration, geophone coupling, and differences in geology over very short distances. Unfortunately, these explanations are often purely qualitative, but are accepted as factual. Shake table testing often demonstrates that those seismographs that indicate large differences for a particular vibration event, may correlate within a few percent of each other and the known shake table input. Geophone coupling also does not fully explain the difference in measurements since geophones in side-by-side measurements are deployed identically. Differences in geology do not explain the difference in measurements since it would be unrealistic to expect significant differences in distances less than one meter in a normal monitoring situation. Utilizing a new technological approach to vibration measurement and analyzing numerous side-by-side measurements, it has become clear that a significant portion of the observed differences between seismograph measurements are instrumentation induced. This study examines and describes some of the most significant sources of the seismograph error budget.

A rather common observation over the last several decades at least has been that rock or ore properties influence blasting results more than does the explosive type that has been used in the blast. It we accept that premise than it is held here that the material to be blasted should receive even closer attention as to its properties. Several years ago, Dr. Richard Ash published papers that pointed out the rock properties that mostly influence blasting. These principles are given attention in this paper. We have gone somewhat further - or lets say expanded this subject in regard to the role of rock structure in open pit blasting. Though open pit work is given some prominence, we believe that much can be observed and applied to underground mining.

The objective of blast optimization can be approached either in a qualitative sense of designing a blast which will be "trouble free", or quantitatively in the sense of minimizing overall mining costs. Blast design simulators and fragmentation models have become an accepted tool in blasting over the last decade. Numeric simulators are very useful for solving quantitative problems, but are limited in their ability to address more qualitative problems such as post-blast bench condition. Also, current blasting models are limited by the complexity of site-specific blasting and are not functionally suited to mathematical optimization. As a result a great deal of expertise is still needed in optimizing a blast. The following describes the application of an expert system approach to integrating both a symbolic model of the expertise of the blasting engineer for attaining a trouble free blast, and a numeric optimization model relating fragmentation to unit operations from drilling to grinding. Research into this application of a coupled modeling approach to blast design is being carried out to develop a modeling methodology which will provide a suboptimal design for qualitative design goals as well as minimizing blast related costs.

Limited void volume blasting (LVVB) occurs when rock is blasted into a volume that is not sufficient to let the rock expand to its free-bulking value. The freebulking value is obtained when the rock particles have enough space to separate, tumble and rotate to produce the maximum amount of void possible between the fragments when they finally come to rest. Although bulking value depends on particle size distribution and shape, a typical free-bulking value for uniform, finely broken shale is about 1.67. LVVB occurs in almost every type of blasting used in both surface and underground mining operations. For example, in multiple-row bench blasting for surface mining, the final delays that are designed to fragment the rock furthest from the free-face are generally confined by previously blasted rock which results in a LVVB situation. In underground mining, the blasting is automatically confined and is commonly done intentionally to limited void volume to reduce mining cost and improve safety. LVVB primarily affects rubble bulking and thus the excavation of the broken rock which is related to the productivity and economics of a mining operation.

Sinkhole development in karst terrains is a serious problem and risk to facilities built in these areas. The potential for sinkholes are a function of many things including the chemistry of the underlying rock, the location of water conductive fractures and fissures in the rock, the natural fluctuation of the ground water table, vibrations from various sources and surface regrading activities. When sinkhole open near quarry operations the occurrence of these features is occasionally attributed to vibrations from quarry blasting. The purpose of this paper is to review the evidence regarding the development of sinkholes as a result of quarry blasting. In general, it has been found that sinkholes result from collapse or piping of overburden soils into cavities or caverns developed within underlying carbonate rocks that have been in existence for many thousands of years. The overburden soils in karst areas are typically clayey and as a result are not subject to densification or liquefaction as a result of vibrations. The primary cause of an increased rate of sinkhole development can be attributed to changes in the ground water table or local surface water drainage. These changes may be caused by seasonal fluctuations, ground water level lowering in drought periods, dewatering of excavations or quarries, or local changes in surface drainage resulting from grading activities.

The traditional concept of scaled-distance modelling for predicting blast induced ground vibration holds many drawbacks, not least of which is the major effect data scatter imparts on confidence determination. An investigation by the Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering, The University of Leeds, England has resulted in the development of simple but effective method of improving prediction capacity through the reduction of effective error by incorporating individual location response into a scaled-distance model. The work is the product of an l&month blast-monitoring campaign at a limestone quarry situated in North Yorkshire, England. The data, when presented in the form of a scaled-distance model, indicates a typical scenario where a good overall correlation becomes marred by the extent of data scatter. Examination of the individual monitoring locations however indicates that the response of the individual location is an important factor in the explanation of the large residuals. The novel approach thathas been developed incorporates a series of locational site factors which when incorporated into a scaled distance model reduces the effective error and therefore improves prediction capacity. The approach is based on using a standard computer package “spread sheet” on the understanding that these are commonly available on all quarry or home computers. This approach has been validated by comparison with a more rigorous statistics method.

The supply crunch and cost rise for ammonium nitrate (AN) over the past year have been influenced by a number of factors. These include a general inflationary tendency, particularly great cost rises in fuel, and by a market condition in which demand for ammonium nitrate is great and supply is limited. Demand is largely confined to agricultural and explosives uses with explosives subdivided into mining, construction, and quarrying. The projections show that demand may be expected to increase markedly for the indefinite future in the agricultural and mining sectors of the ammonium nitrate market while fluctuating with indicators of economic activity for the construction and the quarrying sectors. Supply is projected to increase with plants being designed and built due to high need levels and commensurately high profit potential but not enough are planned to provide an equilibrium market. Constraints upon supply increases to match demand increases include shortages in the raw material, natural gas, high cost of investment capital, high equipment costs and long construction delays. The result should be, even under optimistic conditions, considerable shortage and resultant pressure for higher prices through 1979 for ammonium nitrate. The best hope for relief in the intervening years appears to be conservation. In blasting operations, the earliest and best proven route to conservation seems to be improved utilization available from application of highest available technology and most efficient current blasting practice.

Fracture Control Blasting is an alternative to pre- and post-splitting or smooth wall blasting. It was developed at the University of Maryland as an attempt to overcome some of the disadvantages that occur with normal blasting practices. There are two main factors that are unique to fracture control blasting. First, it utilizes a notched or grooved borehole to initiate fractures at desired locations and secondly, it employs a very carefully selected charge so as to provide control over borehole pressure. The maximum borehole pressure must be kept between very definite limits in order to obtain initiation of fractures at locations where they are desired and yet not obtain fractures where they are not desired. When coupled with stem induced fracturing, which was developed for oil and gas well stimulation, it has been found that the charge required for fracture control can be as little as 1/40th that required for normal smooth wall blasting. The paper describes the technique of fracture control blasting and gives results of some of the field testing conducted to date.

"Over the past 30 years, the Nordic countries have developed similar practices for estimating damage caused by rock blasting vibrations. However, over the last few years the risk of damage has sometimes been estimated by using international values, which have created unnecessary costs, since they are too conservative. This paper gives a proposal for Finnish blast vibration standards and a calculation model for the extent of the zones for building inspection, risk analysis, and vibration measurements. The international conclusion is that particle velocity is the best descriptor for limiting damage potential for structures. Over 900 000 vibration data recordings from 52971 blasts were collected for this paper during 1970-1989. They show that the most practical description is the vertical component of the peak particle velocity. As rock is a nonhomogeneous medium, it is hard to predict the need and scope of risk analyses, building inspection, and vibration measurements. As a large number of blasts were monitored for the recording of the peak particle velocity in several locations in Finland, and the data combined, it is possible to establish safe scaled distances for the calculation of the need and scope of risk analyses, building inspections, and vibration measurements."

This paper briefly describes the past history of blast management. A modern blast management suite is then presented which demonstrates the current capability of the functional link between an electronic blasting system and blast design software. Finally, we look at the potential of tomorrow’s fully integrated blast management systems. From the first time blasting was introduced in mining as part of the production process, blasting technology and blast management have been interconnected. Over the past decades we have gained more recent experience with the new electronic blasting systems in mining, quarrying and construction. To start, the primary focus of electronic blasting was to increase timing accuracy. However, since then the technology has gradually developed, broadened and opened up new possibilities, including impressive flexibility in blast design and full in-situ verification of system functionality. To support this capability, modern electronic blasting systems are specifically designed to facilitate full two-way transfer of information between the office-based blast management software and field-hardened equipment. Blast management systems now comprise a suite of expert systems for planning, documentation, analysis, measurement and prediction of blasts. Within this blast management suite, the blast design software allows the transfer of the blast design information from a PC directly to the hardware of the electronic blasting system. The future development of this technology holds huge potential for the blasting industry.

he Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) supplies water to some 16 million people in a semi-arid region. Most of this water is imported. Some of the supply lines cross over the San Andreas fault, one of the most notorious and active faults in the U.S. There was a serious need for emergency water in case normal supplies should be interrupted. To fill that need, MWD had to find a reservoir site on the west side of the San Andreas fault, west of the mountains. Because of the distinctive nature of the location, it was necessary to construct a huge “bath tub” by building a dam at each end of a valley, requiring some 115 million cubic yards (88 million cu.m) of fill. In effect, two large-scale surface mining operations have been under way simultaneously. The $2.2 billion project is known as the Eastside Reservoir Project. Because of space limitations, this paper will be limited to those topics which are expected to be of primary interest to explosives engineers, principally related to large-scale rock fill production. There is not sufficient space to discuss the many diverse geotechnical questions related to site selection, geological and geophysical field testing, laboratory testing and design considerations. This brief overview may assist those who might be interested in making a tour of the project site following the ISEE conference.

Recently, tunnel blasting works near the residential area and existing building are increasing and environmental problems caused by vibration have become serious public concern. In order to solve these problems, blasting works have been conducted with segmented blasting and reduce advance per round. However, with these blasting, work efficiency is not obtained, and regrettably the cost and risk of accident tend to increase. We developed a new controlled tunnel blasting technique with electronic delay detonator. Electronic delay detonator can supply extremely large range of delay period which could not be achieved with conventional pyrotechnical delay detonators. We utilized advantages in initiating hole by hole over entire tunnel face at the same round. Much seismic data obtained from tunnel blasting with conventional detonator was statistically analyzed in order to find average duration time of vibration caused by a single hole initiation. Numerical simulation using sample waves from a single hole initiation was carried out in order to find an optimum delay time which can separate vibration in each hole initiation and without decreasing blast performance. Trial blasting was conducted to examine the correctness of optimum delay time obtained from numerical simulation. This blasting technique was applied to an actual tunnel construction. This tunnel is 2 lane automobile tunnel with a total length of 659 meters and internal cross section of 70 square meters. The purpose of the use of blasting technique on occasion, was the protection of fresh water reservoirs directly above the tunnel, and to keep the effect on local private houses to a minimum. The vibration level against this station was limited under 20 mm/see P.V.V. With this blasting, the tunnel construction was completed without exceeding the limited vibration level, with minimum cost and construction time.

Tunneling, for transportation, began in France with the Milpass Tunnel on the Lanquedoc Canal in 1680. Of course, the ancient miners had been driving tunnels in search of minerals since the dawn of history but this Milpas Tunnel was the first tunnel exclusively for transportation. In England in 1760, the Duke of Bridgewater opened a canal from his coal mines to Manchester, 10 1/2 miles away. At the mine, he drove a tunnel into the mountain so that the miners could shovel the coal directly into canal boats. James Brindley, an untutored genius, was his engineer and this whole transportation system was an instant success and very profitable through the years. Within a dozen years the Duke, again with James Brindley, opened up the Grand Trunk Canal, 139 miles in length with five tunnels. There was one major tunnel on this system, the First Harecastle Tunnel, 1 1/2 miles in length. But this tunnel was too small. It was only large enough for one 7-ft wide boat which had to be "legged" through by boatmen laying on their backs. By 1824 a second tunnel was driven parallel to the first one, but it had a towpath through it for horse haulage. This was the beginning of the " Industrial Age" and tunnels became a very important part of that era.

Description of Project: Tamar Group’s civil division was awarded a contract to implode the Sun Hotel, an abandoned 14-story building located along Bat Yam’s coastline, roughly two kilometers south of Tel Aviv, Israel. On Nov. 6, 2012, Tamar Group’s experts positioned explosives in strategic locations of the building, targeting its central pillars, which then caused the building to collapse within seconds. Tamar Group used a relatively small amount of explosives in order to generate a well-controlled blast. This is the largest scale demolition carried out in Israel to date.

The Industrialization of a country depends on its mining activities to a great extent. In mineral production, India has a top rank not only in South Asia, at the global level too. Quantum of mineral production is almost directly proportional to the quantum of explosive production. Mining sector consume more than 80% of country’s explosive production. Due to rapid growth of mining activities in the country, the explosives industry has been developing very fast in terms of quantity, quality and types. , In this paper, India’s post independent chronological date regarding use of explosives, their types, their constraints and a profile of well-known manufacturers has been meticulously presented. A production figure for three years with system analysis has been presented. The paper also deals with present consumption pattern while making a futuristic forecast. In view of the anticipated changes that are to take place in mining industries in near future, the manufacturers of explosives have to pay a vital role. The paper highlights some concrete and valuable suggestions and recommendations. Small scale Companies have to limit their production to Slurry and Emulsion types of Cartridged explosives whereas the large manufacturing units have to concentrate on Bulk explosives, specialized explosives and better initiating systems. The large manufacturing units have also to make all concerted efforts to compete with global market for significant export. The Country for its rapid growth needs basic raw materials like Coal, Iron Ore and Limestone. So, the extraction of these minerals is of prime importance. The more we produce and consume, the more will be Industrialization. The Industrial growth rate has been around 6% during the last few years. As the Industrial growth rate is moderate, there is moderate increase in mineral extraction in the Country. Additional mineral extraction demands additional explosive production (Annexure-1).

The Army Corps of Engineers completed the Charleroi Lock and Dam in 1932. It is located on the Monongahela river approximately 22 miles (35k) south of Pittsburgh in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. It is comprised of a 420-foot (128m) gated dam, and a 720-foot (219m) by 56-foot (17m) land side lock, which provides for a 16.6 foot (5m) vertical lift.

Photos 1 - 4 – Chris Elliott is a rock slope supervisor on a construction project east of Seattle, Washington. His job is to look after a “two man” scaling crew working on the rock bluffs some 300 feet in height along the I-90 interstate just east of the town Hyak. The Washington State Rock Engineers noticed a very large mass of unstable rock along the upper rock face and asked us to take it out. Chris is loading explosives in 1½" ” holes that are 8 to 10 feet deep by 40 feet long with 1¼” x 8” power primer on the unstable rock mass that is about 300 feet above the new road construction. I-90 runs east and west longside the new construction note the containment fence and the ship containers along the highway for protection and Lake Keechelus in the background.

This paper summarizes the course of mine blasting safety, particularly in underground coal mining, in the USA for over a century of mining operations. During the late 1800's and especially in the first decade of the 1900's, a large number of mine explosions occurred in which blasting played a significant role. A contributor to the large number of mine explosions during this time period was the use of black blasting powder to extract coal and other minerals. A review is made of some of the more significant underground coal mine explosions that resulted from blasting operations during this time period up to the present day. The safety measures that were adopted and required by a series of laws as a result of mine explosion disasters in which blasting was one of the factors are examined. The time line of historical improvements in blasting safety and the tremendous reduction in fatalities and injuries over a century is illustrated and discussed. The improvements, which included the elimination of black powder and dynamite and the introduction of safer explosives termed "permissibles" occurred slowly over time and culminated from the occurrence of many coal mine explosion disasters. The blasting accident history over the past decade is discussed to show the great gains made when compared to the first decade of the 1900's. The most recent blasting accident fatality that occurred in October 2006 at a U.S. underground coal mine is also discussed. Although the blasting accident record is significantly improved from over a century ago, continual improvement is needed to reach the goal of zero fatalities.

The quiet banks of the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio, received a wake-up call July 16 as two smokestacks in the Marina District were leveled with dynamite. B&B Wrecking, Inc. of Cleveland contracted the project with the city to bring down the twin stacks, both measuring over 250 feet tall. The structures were part of the Toledo Edison Steam Plant and were erected nearly a hundred years ago. A week’s worth of preparation went into final planning, drilling and loading holes with over 80 pounds of explosives. The felling went precisely as planned as onlookers cheered as the stacks were reduced to rubble.
