The design of a single, large mass blast using ring drilling may take two to three months. This time requirement inhibits the evaluation of multiple designs. It also reduces the flexibility to redesign a blast when a parameter affecting the blast changes. Manual preparation exposes the design of a ring blast to a greater probability of human error. The use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) can help to overcome the shortcomings of manual design preparation. High speed electronic calculation, as well as programming, allow for many designs to be considered before blasting. Parametric programming allows single or multiple parameter changes to be introduced into an existing design, such as changes in drilling equipment, variations in ore density or changes in explosive. Exposure to human error is reduced by programming that performs calculations and produces graphical displays for review by the designing engineer. The goal of achieving desirable fragmentation for the minimum cost, when using ring blasting, is obtainable using blasting design techniques and CAD. Multiple designs can quickly be generated and costed, producing cost curves that indicate an optimum design with respect to cost.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has developed test procedures and criteria for evaluating explosive reactivity of explosive contaminated solid waste substances generated by U.S. Army Ammunition Plants. These substances are produced as explosive-contaminated sludge from waste water treatment plants, residues from the burning of munitions and explosives on open ground, and residues from deactivation furnaces. The characterization of explosive reactivity is a prerequisite for disposal of such waste materials, which may be contaminated with primary explosives, propellants, or pyrotechnic materials. The Bureau has proposed two tests for this purpose. These tests were developed to evaluate the explosive reactivity as defined in Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 261.23(a)(6) and (7). These are Bureau of Mines Gap and Bureau of Mines Internal Ignition tests, which determine the sensitivity to shock and thermal stimuli, respectively. This paper also includes gap and internal ignition reference data for typical blasting agents, high explosives, propellants, and marginally reactive substances. These reference data were used to establish test criteria. The Bureau has evaluated over 400 samples of contaminated soil, sludge, and burning residues using these two test methods.

It has been common practice for many years to predict and control underwater blasting effects on the basis of certain simplified theories related to the pressures generated by underwater detonations. Unfortunately, two of the most commonly applied concepts in many instances do not provide an accurate modeling of typical field conditions nor the potential for damage. One of these concepts is that the damage potential is related directly to the peak pressure generated by an underwater detonation, without regard to the time history of the pressure pulse. This belief has led to the widespread use of air bubble curtains to reduce peak pressures, without considering the effect that air curtains have on the time history of the pressure pulse. At times, this procedure can be unwise. The other concept is based on the premise that pressure pulses in solids (such as rock) will always be transmitted to nearby water bodies in agreement with the theories of the transmission of plane waves across normal (perpendicular) boundaries. In reality, such conditions are quite rare.

The main purpose of this study was to apply the artificial neural network (ANN) models to determine optimal powder factors and predict peak particle velocities, based on a series of observations and input parameters. The used blasthole pattern was V-cut. The locations of blastholes and ignition patterns remained almost constant. The input parameters were 14 geological conditions (i.e., dip, dip direction, spacing, separation, and persistence of 2 discontinuity sets, tunnel orientation, rock strength, RQD, and RMR) and 4 blasting conditions (i.e., distance between blasting points and measuring points, charge weight per delay, drilling length, and blasting efficiency). Data for the ANN application in this study were recently collected in a highway tunnel under construction in Korea. The main rock type in the site was biotitic granite. An optimum ANN model was determined by training models with collected data. The trained model was used to evaluate the prediction capability of the optimum model. It was shown that the ANN model could predict the powder factor and the peak particle velocity depended upon the selected input parameters. Particularly, the ANN model predicted more accurate peak particle velocities than those obtained by the blasting vibration equation. Moreover, the more dominant factors among the input parameters could be determined by analysis of the relative strength effect.

The accurate prediction of possible damage to historic structures subjected to blasting-related ground motions is not infrequently the dominant factor in whether or not a mining or quarrying operation is allowed to proceed. A recent scenario involving an 1802 Pennsylvania Historic House was resolved satisfactorily, primarily because of the use of modern structural dynamics analysis techniques rather than simplistic peak particle velocity guidelines. One of the associated dominating factors was the truly significant agreement of the analysis results and the values obtained from actual on-site test shot blast motion recordings.

This paper discusses the results of the gap sensitivity measurements made on water-gel explosives, sensitized by monomethylamine nitrate (MMAN) and flake aluminium, and one emulsion explosive. This study specifically deals with the effect of the mode of initiation, end or center, on the measured L50 values with air gap and coal dust gap for the above explosives. Similar measurements have also been carried out on a nitroglycerine (NG) - based explosive. The results show that the mode of initiation plays an important role in determining the air-gap sensitivity of these explosives. However, in tests carried out with the coal dust gap, the L50 ( grams of coal dust ) values for these explosives are close in both the types of initiation. The results indicate that the sensitivities of these explosives may be ordered in the following manner: NG-explosive>> Aluminized explosive ~ MMAN-explosive > Emulsion explosive

Abandoned underground mine workings have been regularly encountered in open pit mining excavations for many years, for the most part without many serious problems resulting. During the last several years however, some tragic occurrences and near misses have resulted when these old workings were intercepted. This paper will report on the problem as it relates to western open pit mining and will describe several techniques that can be used to identify problem areas before they are reached: Utilization of old maps and engineering data, long hole drilling and probing, and the use of subsurface investigation in the form of ground penetrating radar are the detection methods that will be discussed. The paper will describe some possible actions, once potential problem areas are identified. Drilling and blasting crews are usually exposed to the hazards involved when these situations arise because of their "on the ground" working environment. It is therefore appropriate that some of the best methods of dealing with these hazards once they are identified, seems to involve innovative and creative blast designs. The paper will discuss these approaches and describe an example of this aspect of the solution.

Anaheim Bay, located at Seal Beach, California, is the site of the Huntington Harbor development of waterfront homes and marine facilities. The main entrance to Anaheim Bay is a relatively narrow channel connecting the bay with the Pacific Ocean which runs under California State Highway One. During the development of Huntington Harbor the old highway bridge was replaced with a new, higher bridge to allow for boat passage through the channel. At that time only the main span decking of the old bridge was removed, leaving the support pillars and the approach ramps in place (see Figure 1). The narrowness of this channel, plus the increasing boat traffic created a situation in which public demand for the removal of the old bridge became significant. Because the bridge was located within the boundaries of the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station (see Figure 2) the Navy became involved in the bridge removal. Eventually the task was assigned to the Naval Amphibious Construction Battalion One and work began in early 1974.

ABSTRACT : The Tournai’s region in Belgium is characterized by outcrops of limestone that were mined out long ago by different companies for cement and crushed materials. The region is densely populated and the vibrations generated by blasts in the quarries are of big concern. The occurrence of electronic detonators and development of computer sciences brought a new expectation in controlling the vibration level and, hence, carry out bigger blast operations. In this paper we present the results of two experimental blast programs that have been carried out by the Nobel explosive Belgium Company on the Gaurain-Ramecroix quarry to understand the effect of the delay on the vibrations generated in the neighborhood. The first program has been implemented during the early use of electronic caps in Belgium (1996) by performing some unit shots. An attempt to model the effect of the production blasts by the hybrid method (Hinzen 1988) gave promising but poor results compared to infield measurements. A new program (more than ten blasts) has been implemented in 2006 in which the delay and blast firing sequence (i.e. the order in firing adjacent holes in a row) have been changed; a new attempt is made to build unit signals by deconvolution and then try to model production ones. A comparison of the two approaches is made.

As part of its ongoing research concerning rock fragmentation by blasting, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a series of test blasts where six cylinder-shaped pieces of granite rock were fragmented using high explosives. The tests were intended to: 1) Establish a dataset that could be used in the development and verification of theoretical models that simulate rock blasting and 2) To add to the fragmentation data currently being collected by Bureau researchers. The cylindrical geometry was chosen so that the fragmentation could be directly compared to two-dimensional computer simulations that assume an axisymmetric configuration as well as more sophisticated three-dimensional models. The granite cylinders, Carnelian granite and Charcoal granite, ranged in size from about 0.46 meters (18 inches) to 0.58 meters (23 inches) in diameter by 0.91 meters (36 inches) to 1.52 meters (60 inches) in length. Physical rock properties tests performed on the Charcoal granite cylinders indicated that the rocks did in fact have similar physical characteristics. PETN-based detonating cord and dynamite were used as the explosive charges and estimates of the values of some important physical properties are given. For the first five tests, the blasted rock was contained by a heavy rope mat suspended inside the Twin Cities Research Center's blasting shelter. The fragments from each of these shots were sorted and weighed to determine the corresponding fragment-size distributions. Even though different types of granite and cylinder sizes were used, similar fragment distributions were produced from shots that used a similar explosive, in this case the PETN-based detonating cord, and comparable burden-to-charge diameter ratios. Significantly coarser fragmentation was produced from a blast that used dynamite as the explosive charge. Fragment velocities were calculated using photographic data from the sixth test which was shot unrestrained in a quarry and filmed with high-speed cameras.

The City of Fort Myers needed to replace a 40-year old 42-inch storm sewer line in downtown Fort Myers with a new 54-inch line to accommodate population growth. The old line had to be kept operational while a new line was installed. The contractor spent two months using a drop ball, a hoe ram, and large rippers trying to break the three to four feet of rock that needed to be removed to accmmodate the new pipe. Mechanical trenching was considered but was proven to be overly expensive. On very short notice, Ireco of Florida was asked to design and execute a blasting procedure that would allow this project to proceed. Nearby buildings were over 80 years old, three of them containing antique shops specializing in glass antiquities with attorney offices above them. High water table compounded problem with a 20-year old steel water main and clay drainage pipe 15 feet frcan the new sewer line. Holes had to be drilled within six inches of the edge of the existing pipe to four feet below the pipe on either side of the pipe and blasted. No interruption in the sewer line flow was to be tolerated.

The average annual consumption of raw minerals in Europe is 10 ton per person. About 50 % is produced by blasting. For a population of 450 million (including the population from the countries of the new member states) this makes 2.25 billion tons of blasted rock, 80 % being building industry aggregates and industrial minerals. In aggregate quarries 10-15 % of the rock blasted can’t be sold, as the material is too fine, i.e. smaller than 4 mm. This ‘fines problem’ is worse in the quarries of limestone and cement producers where up to 30 % of the material is useless. Thus about 450 million tons of useless rock fines are produced and put on waste dumps every year, i.e. 1 ton/person. This problem is addressed by the research project LESS FINES - “Less Fines production in aggregate and industrial minerals industry” which is funded by the European Union under the project contract G1RD-CT-2000-00438. The project consortium, formed of nine partners from 5 EU countries, works on the following two main research subjects: 1. The determination of the natural breakage behavior (NBC) of the rock mass, which is defined as the particle size distribution curve for a certain rock mass with the maximum uniformity and thus for a given maximum particle size that fragmentation curve which gives the minimum amount of unusable fine material. The comparison between the NBC and an actual blast fragmentation curve allows to quantify the fines reduction potential. 2. The adaptation of explosives properties, charging techniques and timing in order to produce only the minimum, inherently unavoidable percentage of fines. With about 15 full time working persons the project is estimated to be one of the largest blast related research activities in Europe at the time of the project period. The project is coordinated by the Department of Mining Engineering& Mineral Economics of the University of Leoben.

The model of waves emanating from a blast hole proposed by Heelan, and further developed by Blair and Minchinton, provides an approximation of particle motion in an isotropic, continuous and homogenous medium caused by a cylindrical pressure source. Previous work in the literature shows that the shapes of the peak strain and peak particle velocity contours generated by this model are influenced by priming location. This paper presents the results of experimental investigations into the effects of priming position in an explosive column and the resulting shape of the surrounding stress and particle velocity fields. Fifteen emulsion charges were detonated in a limestone quarry, of which eight were bottom primed and seven top primed. The charges were fully confined, with no breakout to any surface. Particle velocity was monitored using tri-axial sensors coupled to the rock using cement, and pressure sensors were placed in water filled boreholes for fourteen of the experiments. Statistically significant differences in peak pressure for bottom and top primed shots were observed. Blair and Minchinton developed two pressure source functions, one of which is scaled using the charge weight scaling law. New models of the explosive pressure source are developed and compared to those found in the literature. These models are directly calibrated by predicting the peak velocities achieved at the known locations of the velocity sensors, then minimizing the residual sum of squares between the predicted and observed peak vibration values. Due to the complexity of the model the residual sum of squares cannot be minimized using standard non-linear optimization techniques, so a stochastic, agent based global optimization method is employed. Models are then cross validated by comparing the relative predicted differences in stress between bottom and top priming position to the observed differences.

The Pinkerton Tunnel open cut project is part of the National Gateway Clearance Initiative improvement project to achieve a minimum of 21 feet of vertical clearance along CSX Transportation rail corridor so that double-stacked intermodal railcars can be transported between mid-Atlantic states and their ports to midwest markets in the U.S. This project involved drilling and blasting of 1.2 million bank cubic yards of rock over a 14 month period while maintaining rail traffic of two passenger and 38 freight trains daily. As someone who has enjoyed photography as a hobby for many years, aerial photography to me has always been an exciting way to give a different perspective to my images. Our industry is always in search of new technology for bet­ter and more cost effective methods to improve our trade and aerial photography is a great tool to improve project planning or document its progress. It has typically involved conventional aircraft both fixed wing and helicopters but neither method is always available or cost effective. The lat­est innovation since digital imaging is the development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones. But there is a lot of uncertainty with this amazing new technology’s fu­ture in the U.S. as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is under review and development of UAV regulations for commercial use which are slated to be completed in 2015.

As a means of maintaining regulatory compliance the operation elected to exercise the option of frequency analysis. A site-specific computer processing program which suggests ideal delay interval ranges for the lowest vibration was utilized.

This paper describes a new digital Centralized Blasting System (CBS), which is currently being introduced into underground applications. The CBS makes use of the field-proven detonator and equipment technology of an electronic detonator system and existing mine radio communication networks. Therefore no capital investment for additional mine infrastructure networks is required for the deployment of the digital CBS. Components of the new system are a Remote Blasting Box for use at the actual blast site and a Master control unit ‘Lockbox’ which is located at the central blasting location of the mine. The system is operated via a PC based centralized blasting software. Several sophisticated safety devices guarantee the highest safety standards are maintained with the application of the new digital CBS.
