Detonating cord cutting is widespread in dimension stone extraction, especially in the case of hard, abrasive stones as granites, an important resource for Italian industry. General data on this production sector are briefly discussed and analyzed in the first part of the paper. The use of crater studies to evaluate explosive performance is a well-established practice in the Blasting Industry. Normally, this work utilizes larger charge sizes (>75mm) in order to minimize the influence of geological factors adjacent to the borehole. This can impose unwanted restrictions in the experimental factors accessible to investigation. Thus, for example, systematic studies of non-ideal performance in a somewhat practical setting is rendered quite difficult.

When a major ground subsidence occurred in the AKZO Salt mine at Retsof New York, the company was forced to pick up their production from a lower mine level. Before full production on the lower level was possible, an escapeway and ventilation shaft would have to be constructed. Construction of a shaft under emergency conditions required some special techniques. Dynatec Mine Construction, Inc. of Lakewood Colorado was awarded a contract for the project.

The advent of more powerful explosives, increased bench heights, and larger diameter blastholes has necessitated the use of presplitting techniques in sub-bituminous coal mines. The combination of these factors has increased the energy concentration during blasting, producing severe overbreak problems in the final pit walls. Presplitting with large diameter blastholes has proven to be the most viable method of reducing back break in sub-bituminous coal mines.

A system consisting of an unlimited number of biaxial geophones that measure peak particle velocity and frequency has been developed and utilized at surface mines, quarries and construction sites. An ability to accurately measure ground vibrations completely surrounding a blast and to construct a vibration topograph has facilitated the study of blast design parameters and geologic factors on the resulting generation and propagation of the vibrations.

An important factor to consider during blast damage investigations is whether the structure was constructed on collapsible soils. Traditionally, these soils have been considered to be soils such as loess deposits, which occur along the Mississippi River in locations such as Vicksburg, MS. However, recent research into collapsible soils has indicated that a number of soils may also fall into this category. A collapsible soil is any soil that is susceptible to large decreases in bulk volume upon saturation.

When blasts are designed, we normally assume the best case situation. We assume that all burdens and spacings will be properly drilled, holes will be properly loaded, initiators will fire at the nominal time and the explosives will release their full energy. This type of precision can be obtained at a machine shop where precision equipment is available to do machining, however, in the field, no matter how well a blast is designed on paper, it most likely will not be done in the exact manner in the field.

This paper deals with explosives regulations in the State of Wisconsin. As has been typical elsewhere, there has been considerable pressure to add additional restrictions over blasting in Wisconsin. What we believe to be a novel approach to the problem has been developed and is being implemented. Members of this Society have been instrumental in this approach whereby the emphasis of the regulations is directed at permissible levels of blasting resultants rather than at specific methods of blasting.
