Case Study: Dragline Swing to Dump Automation By Peter Corke, CSIRO Manufacturing Technology/CRC for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) Peter Corke presented a case study of a project to automate the dragline swing to dump operation. The project is funded by ACARP, BHP Coal, Pacific Coal and the CMTE and is being carried out on a dragline at Pacific Coal's Meandu mine near Brisbane. Corke began by highlighting that the minerals industry makes extensive use of large, mechanised machines. However, unlike other industries, mining has not adopted automation and most machines are controlled by human operators on board the machine itself. Choosing an automation target The dragline automation was chosen because: ò draglines are one of the biggest capital assets in a mine; ò performance between operators vary significantly, so improved capital utilisation is possible; ò the dragline is often the bottleneck in production; ò a large part of the operation cycle is spent swinging from dig to dump; and ò it is technically feasible. There has been a history of drag line automation projects, none with great success.

Taxes have an impact on mineral resource availability in several ways. There is the obvious effect on the grades needed for mineral deposits to become economic orebodies. There are also indirect effects which can have equally significant impacts. The paper examines the appropriateness of different types of taxes in the mining industry. The effects of discriminatory taxes such as price-based royalties are described. There is a discussion on the feasibility of introducing a single resources tax to replace completely the various forms of taxes presently applied to the industry. The subtle impacts of taxes are described in a section covering the way in which apprehension over future possible changes to both the level and diversity of taxes is reflected in industry confidence. It is concluded that taxation can significantly limit the economic availability of mineral resources.

Process control computers are finding ever increasing applications within the chemi-cal and mineral processing industries.To purchase a system which fulfils both the immediate and future needs of operating, technical and management groups, requires an appreciation of the capabilities of the system software and the constraints which apply to user development of application software. Early decisions are then required as to who will develop and maintain the software. Rules and conventions must be determined and adhered to if the end result is to be an orderly, well structured and properly documented system. Software development and maintenance represents a substantial, and often hidden, cost. Getting it right the first time will avoid either a major re-work, or having to live with a system which is extremely diffi-cult (at the worst, impossible) to trouble-shoot or modify.

Over the past decade most, if not all participants in the resources sector have been involved in initiatives to improve margins, reduce costs and improve business profitability. In many cases the initiatives undertaken have fallen short of their stated objectives, and in some cases have resulted in the terminal decline of the underlying business. In reviewing why many such initiatives fail, a common theme of arbitrary cost reduction and a focus on minimising cost as opposed to maximising value and cashflow emerges. This paper proposes a structured process that allows mine owners and managers to develop an understanding of their cost structure and optimise production and cost outcomes from the business. The broad objective of cost optimisation is to create value by getting more out of existing and new assets by focussing on operational areas, particularly production and maintenance. The paper uses practical examples to highlight the application of cost driver trees as a mine improvement tool.

It is-assumed that a pipeline system is economically justified as a means of transportation.. The terms "True Life" and "Economic Design Life" are defined. The most usual design alternatives to be considered from both physical and economic -viewpoints are listed and a summary is given of the main factors to be costed in assessing the relative economics of each alternative. A brief statement of the recor mended method af economic. assessment is given and an example is included. The paper aims to present a reasonably accurate, simple and practical method of considering the main economic factors which govern design.

In recent years, wide consideration has had to be given to methods of improving the condition of the mine environment in many coal mines, and significant developments and changes have evolved. Thus even after substantial increases inòair flow rates at the working place (they have increased over three fold in the last generation), environmental conditions have arisen for which it has been necessary to introduce or consider: i) additional ameliorative measures, such as good housekeeping; ii) layout changes: such as Y or Z layouts; iii) homotropal ventilation; and iv) air conditioning. In certain countries, consideration has been given also to: v) additional payments reduced working times; vi) heat acclimatisation programmes; and vii) the use of cold or cooling suits At many hot and humid mines, the principal benefits from adopting (i), (ii) and (iii) have already been realised. It is self evident that in many cases mining disrupts communities, however, community reaction to mining varies enormously. This is due to a whole host of factors, some physical, some financial, some political and some a direct result of the projected mining company attitude towards the community at large. Physical and political factors are increasingly being dealt with realistically and financial aspects are to a significant extent determined by profit margins. If the acceptable profit margin canÆt accommodate all necessary costs (which now includes a variety of community considerations unheard of even a decade ago), then the project is just not viable. Despite major commitments now made by many mining companies to their affected communities, corporate attitudes, and their projection, remain as the most outstanding factor in mining project development where real gains can still be made in effectively reducing social risk. This paper addresses both international and domestic experience gained in managing this aspect of mining development risk, including initiatives implemented by multilateral institutions.

It was once considered sufficient to revegetate old mine sites using grass or trees. At the commencement of the Stawell JV (SJV) operation in 1981, management determined that pre-existing vegetation would be replaced. This policy was somewhat 'ahead of its time'. The cost of rehabilitation at SJV averages $8000 per hectare. Rehabilitation of this calibre requires a practical understanding of local ecosystems.

For various reasons, the maintenance of shaft structures is becoming an increasingly important factor in the operation of underground mines. Deterioration mechanisms related to operation of the shaft are identified as corrosion, mechanical damage, fatigue damage and wear. Deterioration mechanisms related to rock movements are identified as vertical strain, ride vertical closure and squeezing. Analytical procedures for assessing this deterioration are discussed, and it is shown how acceptance criteria are developed and implemented. In order to track the deterioration of shaft structures, shaft inspections are undertaken, but the information is often not well documented. Formalised procedures for capturing and recording information, and then processing the information are presented. Finally, two case studies are briefly described to illustrate how these procedures have been implemented in practice, and what benefit has accrued to the mines concerned.

A philosophy is presented that new graduates in mining and metallurgy should be equipped to use computers during their under- graduate courses, should be aware of the capabilities and costs of a wide range of computing equipment, and should receive sufficient stimulus to become involved in applying computers for the benefit of the mineral industry. A program is presented in which computer applications and "hands on" involvement with computers are integrated into the progressive stages of the undergraduate courses in Mining and Metallurgy. In this respect, the role of the computer is to assist the student by performing time consuming tasks, to demonstrate the industrial applications of computing, to extend the scope and complexity of the tutorial, assignment and project work which can be undertaken by the student, and to provide the essential first stepping stones toward continued useful involvement with computers during the graduate's working life.

This paper reports a computational study using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in a mine ventilation system. Ambient air is injected to a rectangular mine drive through a circular duct. Moisture evaporates from shaft wall depending on flow properties of air in the drive-duct system. The physical process involves simultaneous momentum, heat and mass transfer. A species transport equation is employed to account for the moisture concentration in air. The momentum equation is solved using standard k- model, while energy and species transport equations are solved using standard expressions for moisture evaporation rate and heat flux from the drive wall. The aim of this paper is to investigate effectiveness of CFD simulation in relation to mine ventilation in a drive where a significant mass transfer phenomenon occurs. Results from simulation are compared with existing data from a site in Victoria.

The design of the 12 m diameter SAG mill installed at the Cadia Hill Mine in New South Wales followed after two years of extensive laboratory and pilot plant testwork. The testwork showed the Cadia ores to be hard and competent necessitating the use of both a variable speed SAG mill drive and pebble crushing. The grinding power requirements for the SAG mill was based on engineering in-house grinding software, pilot plant data and simulations using JK SimMet software. Surveys of the SAG mill operation during the first four weeks showed the feed size distribution, transfer size and pebble rate to be lower or less than those for which it was designed. To compensate for the lower pebble rate, the SAG ball load was increased. This resulted in the total comminution circuit power being some 0.5 kWh/t higher than predicted. The JK SimMet SAG model has been modified to take account of these variations.

In single stage copper making appreciable amounts of copper report to the slag phase. Various strategies are available to minimise copper losses to the slag. However a slag treatment stage is likely to be required in an economically viable process. A number of slag treatment process options are available and include: flotation, leaching and thermal reduction. In the design of an industrial process some type of economic as well as technical analysis of these options will be required. In this paper an outline of the techno-economic analysis procedure used to design a single stage copper making process is presented. The calculated operating and capital costs of industrial copper making processes are compared and used to determine the optimum single stage copper making flowsheet. The most economic slag treatment options is flotation of slags containing low amounts of copper.

This paper reviews the need for, and potential of, dry technologies in mineral processing, and considers the problems that will have to be solved for such technologies to be economic. The need for water in conventional mineral processing is reviewed, together with the advantages and disadvantages of operating wet and dry. A wide range of dry processing techniques have been developed in the past, some of which are in routine use either in mineral processing or in allied industries. However more information is needed to determine which of these is appropriate to replace conventional wet processing. It is concluded that a new paradigm is required for the design of processing flow sheets, which will need to extend to innovative ways of valuing particular process routes. Research is also required to develop current dry methods to increase throughput and overcome other disadvantages, and to develop new or refined dry separation methods, perhaps exploiting alternative mineral properties.

The Nabarlek uranium treatment plant of Queensland Mines Limited (QML) is currently treating 600,000 tonnes of ore which was mined and stockpiled in a single four month period prior to commissioning of the plant. During the mining phase, material from the open pit was sorted into ore,'below ore grade uranium material (bogum) and waste using a truck discriminator (radiometric analyser) developed by Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (AMDEL). Ore was stockpiled in a single heap with the location and grade of each truck load being recorded. Bogum and waste were stored separately. From the information recorded, both computer and physical models of the stockpile were constructed. These models are currently used in the planning of day to day reclamation of ore from the stockpile.

Technological advances evolve in different ways; many are the result of years of application of scientific method. i.e. Observation Deduction Hypothesis Proof In the mining industry, better explosives, drill bits or reagents are likely to evolve in this way. The scientific method is suited to the application of conventional management structures. Other advances are simply the result of a "brainstorm", or building a better mousetrap. Such inspiration probably resulted in "Split Set" rock bolts, or the first use of a vacuum cleaner principle for shaft mucking. Individual consultants can apply lateral thinking to generate such inspiration. In gathering material for the presentation of this paper, I sent a.letter to all members of the Mineral Industry Consultants Association asking them to nominate problems in the industry requiring investigation. The answers have been divided into two classifications - contract research underway and identified problems requiring solutions.

Due to the structural nature of the orebodies mined by open stoping it has been necessary to review mining methods. In-the-hole hammer drilling proved to be the solution to many problems encountered in horizontal percussion drilling.

Willemite (Zn2SiO4) is one of the main zinc carriers in several Neoproterozoic carbonate-hosted non-sulfide deposits ofNamibia and Zambia. Willemite commonly replaces sphalerite, but it may also replace the carbonate host rocks. Fluid inclusions, cathodoluminescence petrography and trace element geochemistry are crucial to distinguish between hypogene, high temperature and low temperature (possibly) supergene willemites. A global period of willemite mineralisation, extending from Cambrian to Lower Ordovician has been proposed for the southern hemisphere. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Thermo Fisher Scientific is a supplier of samplers, instruments, analysers and consumables to the mining industry under the Thermo Scientific brand. The critical need to provide a representative sample to the analyser has played a pivotal role in product development. Products discussed are the Analysis and Sampling Station (AnStat) for mineral slurries, the Coal Quality Manager (CQM) and the prototype Bore Hole Analyser (BHX) with optional drill chip recovery system. Analytical techniques used in the above products are XRF, PGNAA and LIBS respectively. The company also designs and supplies conventional mechanical sampling equipment and complete sampling systems for bulk material applications (historical Ramsey brand). These products and application of them are presented.
