This paper describes a methodology for the design of mine pillars at the McArthur River Mine. The pillar strength is calculated using a method that accounts for confinement, pillar geometry and intact rock properties. The average pillar stress was calculated using in situ measurements of vertical stresses at shallow depth and the tributary area method in conjunction with numerical modelling. Observations of pillar behaviour indicate that an existing pillar stability graph may be slightly conservative and further adjustments for the local rockmass conditions are needed. The results to-date indicate that all mine pillars are stable for a range of mining geometries at McArthur River Mine.

The Sepon Copper Project is located in the Savannakhet Province of Laos PDR and is operated by Lane Xang Minerals Ltd (LXML). An Ausenco - Bateman Engineering joint venture, the Khanong Development Group (KDG) managed engineering, procurement and construction of the project. The plant was fully commissioned in March 2005, two weeks ahead of schedule. The plant is designed to produce 60 000 tpa of cathode copper. The process flow sheet includes a pressure oxidation (POX) circuit that leaches pyrite flotation concentrate to generate ferric ions and sulfuric acid for use in atmospheric leaching of a predominantly chalcocite ore. The process is unique in that the chemistry in the autoclave is forced to produce a basic ferric sulfate precipitate for downstream recovery of ferric iron. This paper describes the design, construction and commissioning of the pressure oxidation circuit. The challenges imposed on construction and commissioning due to the remote location of the site, landlocked status and underdeveloped infrastructure in Laos are highlighted.

The geological features of the destructive plate margins of the southwest Pacific favour the formation of porphyry type deposits. The major controlling factor favouring the formation of gold-rich deposits of this type is a dense crust. This results in shallow intrusion of large magma bodies beneath andesite stratovolcanoes. Where the intrusives have near vertical sides, the comparatively low temperature of transfer of volatiles from the solidifying melt favours the partitioning of gold into bubbles of volatiles. They reduce the viscosity and density of the melt, resulting in the upward movement of a mineralised melt. With the drop of pressure with upward movement the bubbles separate into a two phase mixture, triggering freezing of the mineralised melt and the formation of a gold mineralised stockwork.

Gallium occurs at above background levels in most samples collected from 11 of the major geothermal areas in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Concentrations of Ga in the 48 samples ranged from 8 to 144 mg kg-1 and varies widely from place to place within each geothermal area. Gallium is contained within the alumino-silicate structure of clay in the mud, having substituted mainly for Al. Suggested deposition mechanisms for Ga also involve co-precipitation with Sb, As, and SiO2 colloids. Digestion trials, carried out to determine extraction conditions for possible commercial exploitation, showed that heating the mud to 500 - 600¦C for 1 hour followed by acid/alkali treatment gave complete recoveries.

The excavation of sandstone of generally medium strength for the Liverpool Link Line by Dosco Mark 2A Roadheaders has demonstrated the versatility and good performance of road- headers in suitable rock formations. A description is given of the strata traversed by the tunnels together with descriptions of equipment and crews, excavation sequences, operating difficulties and the results achiev- ed. In addition tunnel construction is des- cribed for a difficult section where there was only O.Sm clearance between invert and a four lane vehicular tunnel below, and O.5m clearance between tunnel crown and a century old sewer above.

The "Line of Lade", a generic term by which the great Broken Hill orebodies are collectively known, lies in the County of Yancowinna, New South Wales (NSW) at the south eastern extrenity of the Barrier Ranges. As the township of Broken Hill grew to a city (incidentally it was officially named Willyama but by exerting an enterprising community independence which is still evident today it outplayed officialdom and retained its descriptive name), two major areas of population developed, Broken Hill and South Broken Hill. These two main civic divisions are respectively north west and south east of their dividing line, the surface expression of the orebody. See Fig. 1. The border between the States of NSW and South Australia (SA) is drawn along longitude 1410 East whilst the city of Broken hill's official longitude is 1410 28' 14" East which means it is only 50 km from this political boundary. A latitude of 310 57' 03" South contributes to the harsh climate of high summer temperatures which is not mollified by any significant increase in altitude for Broken Hill is only 300 m above sea level.

The reaction between lead sulphate and a number of base metal sulphides (galena, sphal- erite, chalcopyrite and synthetic pyrrhotite was studied as a means of desulphurizing lead sulphate containing fumes and residues to levels acceptable as ISF feed. The reactants were mixed with 50% zinc oxide to act as a "basket" to contain the molten products of the reaction and pressed into small briquettes 20 mm in diam. Factors such as temperature, time and the composition of the atmosphere were investigated. Using the PbS/PbS04 system as an example it was shown that the reaction became rapid above 800¦C and that both sulphur dioxide and oxygen in the atmosphere were detrimental to achieving low sulphur in the product. In an inert atmosphere all the sulphides when roasted for 1 h at 1000¦C gave results corresponding to the elimination of more than 95% of the sulphur in the reactants. Leach plant residues were considered for use as the "basket" material. It was shown that the residual sulphide and sulphate components of the residues underwent similar reactions to those experienced by the pure systems.

The paper describes the reasons for developing, specifically in South Africa, dense medium processes to allow baths to operate at low (about 1,35) and high (about 2,0) cut points. Low density processing was developed to meet the demand for low ash coals; high density processing was developed to enable heavily contaminated raw coals, destined to be burned in captive power stations, to be de-shaled without loss of combustibles. The anticipated and actual technical difficulties of operating baths at such density extremes are described, and the results from operating plants outlined.

Mining Engineering Degree programs have traditionally had a practical emphasis and have been highly vocational in nature. However, over the years, there has been an increasing attention to the more scientific aspects of the discipline. More recently, the professional institutions, the industry and the community at large have placed increasing emphasis on the broader aspects of the professions: management, finance, humanity, environment and social issues. Notwithstanding this, there has been a continuing emphasis on the practicalities, and most Mining Engineering programs are still strongly vocational in nature. But employers of new graduates complain about the graduatesÆ lack of practicality and readiness for employment æat the sharp endÆ on the mine site.This paper briefly describes some of the more recent developments in the Mining Engineering Degree program at the University of Queensland that attempt to address the problem. Particular attention is paid to alternative learning programs, including applications of virtual reality, practical experience at the University Experimental Mine (UQEM), and the Undergraduate Site Learning Program (USLP).

Light metals have great potential for application in the automotive and aerospace industries because of their excellent physical properties. The usage of aluminium, titanium and magnesium is limited by relatively high costs of production, associated energy costs and large ecological footprint. In the case of aluminium, significant improvement to the Hall-HTroult process is still achievable through advances in cell design, materials and process control. Alternative production processes, including carbothermic reduction and low temperature routes are also possible. Magnesium and titanium production are currently dominated by batch metallothermic processes and new process routes are required to develop these industries. Research at CSIRO, through the Light Metals Flagship, is currently focused on step change improvements in the production of light metals, aimed at lowering energy usage, increasing productivity and reducing the overall environmental impact. In this paper, the overall status of the existing technologies will be described, highlighting areas that are being developed around the world and at CSIRO.

This paper examines the new water-hydraulic (hydro powered) drill rigs that have been developed and proven in the last decade primarily in tabular, shallow-dipping, narrow-reef, hard-rock South African mines. These include - drill rigs for flat end tunnel development, narrow inclined raises and winzes, large inclines and declines and long hole based developments such as orepasses and vent raises. The hydropower technology rigs offer advantages both in safety and performance over traditional compressed air powered, hand-held development are generally more cost effective than imported oil electro-hydraulic drill rigs. Furthermore, hydro powered rigs are inherently energy efficient. The benefits of hydropower are discussed and a æcomprehensive development modelÆ is presented which demonstrates that orebodies can be accessed in significantly shorter times. æLocalisedÆ half level hydropower systems are introduced and a range of ancillary equipment available is listed.CITATION:Fraser, P D, 2012. South Australian coals are all low in rank and generally poor in quality, with difficult combustion characteristics. This circumstance makes the selection of a fuel source for future power generation difficult, requiring careful study and detailed analysis of the various alternatives. Combustion characteristics can have a significant effect on plant design and costs, and need early attention in any exploration and evaluation programme. The physical location of the deposits, often remote from established infrastructure and centres of population, is also a major factor in the ultimate cost of power at the poirl use.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore initiated a program in January 1995 at the Mt Whaleback operation in Newman, Western Australia to develop a closure plan for the overburden storage areas (OSA), which have the potential to generate acid rock drainage. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long-term performance of OSAs with respect to slope stability, surface run-off, erosion, water infiltration and vegetation. The objective is to control acid rock drainage by preventing moisture movement into and through the OSA material. Infiltration to the underlying OSA material and closure costs are minimised due to the presence of the run-of-mine (ROM) cover material. A summary of the field data is presented to illustrate low percolation rates to the underlying OSA and key performance characteristics of the moisture store and release cover system design. Field data collected to date demonstrates that a moisture store and release cover system constructed with suitable ROM material has good potential as a final cover system at the Mt Whaleback site. The performance of the cover system on a sloped surface was significantly different as compared to placing the cover system on a horizontal surface.

Magnetite deposits with distinctive ¦ actinolite ¦ apatite -bearing gangue and spatially-extensive sodic-calcic wall rock alteration occur in both Proterozoic metamorphic terrains and Mesozoic-Tertiary magmatic arcs. Examples from both settings constitute significant sources of iron ore (e.g. Kiruna, Sweden; El Romeral, Chile) and some host major Cu-Au deposits that have a local association with K-silicate alteration (e.g. Cloncurry district, NW Queensland; Copiapo district, Chile). A growing body of evidence points to a hydrothermal origin for these systems involving high temperature, low S oxidized fluids. The Cloncurry magnetite-Cu-Au deposits are products of the local structurally channelized influx of a specialized high salinity ore fluid into larger-scale alteration systems developed during pluton emplacement at greater depths than those associated with subvolcanic (porphyry) Cu-Au deposits. The geological characteristics of deposits in magmatic arcs are consistent with a similar mode of origin albeit in rather different tectonic settings.

Felspar occurs in association with quartz in the Broken Hill lode pegmatites and is brilliant green, greenish white, and white in colour. The pegmatites occur mainly in the walls in sporadic patches, parallel to the general dip of the ore deposit. The occurrences are of no economic value.Deposits of marketable felspar occur in pegmatite in a number of localities around Broken Hill, New South Wales.The majority of these are in the form of an irregular outcrop, usually of tapering length and depth. The maximum depth of any deposit yet worked in the district is about 40 ft. The felspar is occasionally contaminated by "blows" of quartz, mica and beryl, but the two latter are profitably marketable when separated.Felspars vary in colour from pink, through grey to snow white, and the colour is not indicative of the mineral content. The largest deposit at present being worked is the Egebeck quarry, about 14 miles south of Cockburn. It is a prominent outcrop, roughly circular and about 150 ft. in diameter, covered by one to three feet of overburden.The felspar is mainly massive, but contains some cleavage planes at approximately 90°. Intrusions of quartz and mica occur in patches, but the deposit appears likely to improve in size, regularity and quality below the present working floor.COMMERCIAL USES.Commercial felspars are mainly used in the ceramic industry, for which a high-grade potash felspar is required.The dental industry requires limited amounts of soda felspar with a very low Fe20s content. Magmatic-related low sulfidation hydrothermal ore systems at plate margins exhibit distinct spatial and temporal zonations which can be used to aid mineral exploration and development. Low sulphidation systems at all crustal levels exhibit the same paragenetic sequence of events: early breccia formation, followed by quartz - secondary feldspar sericite/illite veining, then mineralisation, and final argillic overprint. This sequence of events is interpreted to reflect the initial emplacement of melts at high crustal levels, and the progressive cooling of that melt and release of magmatic constituents into a circulating hydrothermal system.   Low sulphidation systems in the south-west Pacific region exhibit a vertical zonation in deposit types: from porphyry copper-gold at deep levels, quartz-sulfide-gold at mesothermal to deep epithermal levels, carbonate-base metal gold at mainly epithermal levels, and epithermal quartz silver-gold at shallow levels. It is interpreted that the characteristics of each of these styles of deposits is produced by mixing with circulating waters of different physio-chemical compositions.

Recent mapping (1989-1992) by the Northern Territory Geological Survey in the Tennant Creek 1:250 000 map sheet area has resulted in substantial revision of the lithostratigraphy of the Tennant Creek Block (Donnellan, Hussey, and Morrison, in press). Briefly, the former Warramunga Group (Dunnet and Harding, 1967; Dodson and Gardener, 1978) is divided into the Warramunga Formation, and an overlying less deformed volcano-sedimentary succession, the Flynn Subgroup. The latter is conformably overlain by the Tomkinson Creek Subgroup of the Tomkinson Creek province in the north of the Tennant Creek Inlier. These two Subgroups constitute the Churchills Head Group which is essentially equivalent to the Hatches Creek Group of the Davenport province to the south of the Inlier.

The Hellyer concentrator of Aberfoyle Limited commenced production in 1989 processing a fine grained, massive sulphide ore containing Zn, Pb, Ag, Cu and Au as values. Four concentrates are produced - copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk (Pb/Zn) - with overall payable recoveries (1991) of 80 per cent Zn, 55 per cent Pb, 50 per cent Ag, 30 per cent Cu and ten per cent Au. Metallurgical development work commenced immediately after plant commissioning, and continues. The flotation response and liberation analysis on a size basis highlighted reagent balance problems associated with tower mill regrinding of sphalerite, poor conditioning of flotation pulps, poor selectivity for fine galena, and insufficient liberation. These were the main causes of values lost to tailings, values reporting to the 'wrong' concentrates and of impurities in the concentrates. Modifications to tower mill regrind circuit operation, and the use of improved conditioning techniques have greatly improved concentrator performance, particularly in the finer (-5 micron) size fractions. Studies of concentrator and laboratory flotation by size and liberation analysis are the basis of diagnostic metallurgy. The techniques used to evaluate the improved concentrator performance are discussed.
