The DeGrussa copper-gold deposit is located 900 km North of Perth. Copper-gold bearing massive sulfide lenses occur in lower greenschist facies meta-sedimentary and mafic volcanics of the Bryah Basin. Regional folding, faulting, and tilting of the stratigraphy primarily occurred during the Capricorn Orogen (Johnson, 2013). The Shiraz Fault and Merlot Fault are regional oblique-sinistral faults that offset the DeGrussa massive sulfides lenses into three fault blocks by ~350 m and ~120 m, respectively. A network of deposit-scale brittle-ductile faults splay from, and in one example are cut by, the Shiraz and Merlot faults. This results in localised ore displacement, selvage alteration and degradation of the rock mass integrity. Historically, only the Shiraz and Merlot Faults were modelled and validated during mining and grade control. The requirement for a comprehensive structural model became more relevant as mining became advanced and confining stresses on local rock mass became more complicated. The DeGrussa Structural Model has been developed to delineate areas of structural complexity and is an important tool in mitigating rockfall risk through well informed technical design. During this process, every accessible excavation was walked and structurally mapped. New workflows in Leapfrog Geo and new technology, including an app that runs on mobile phones streamlined the validation process. Drill hole orientation was a limiting factor during validation. At the time of writing this submission, the DeGrussa Structural Model consists of 34 faults, and is now an important tool for the Technical Service team when developing mine plans and schedules. Applied structural geology is often seen as exclusive to those with a PhD in the field. Faults at DeGrussa have been modelled and reconciled by a Mine Geologist and Geotechnical Engineer, using first principles geological characterisation. This is a simple process that demonstrates any geologist can contribute to a structural model, provided they understand the fundamentals of unbiased structural measurements and consistent record of observation

Mining operations have large power requirements. The biggest consumers of energy are the drives for the mills located in the concentrators. Assuming that the decision is made on how many mills are needed and how big these mills will be, it can be determined how these mills should be driven. The decision as to which drive should be applied depends on design limits for different mechanical or electrical drives, anticipated operation modes, capital expenditure optimisation and lifecycle cost optimisation.The task for the engineer specifying the drive equipment is to select a drive solution that can debottleneck the operation, avoid interruption of production and enhance the reliability of the process. At the same time, the engineer must choose a design that enables cost optimisation either in a single investment or in relation to the total cost of ownership (TCO).This paper outlines different mechatronic or electric drive alternatives for tube or horizontal mills applied in the mining industry, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Mining exploration and development projects in Australia are being negatively affected by the highly complex regulatory and bureaucratic processes at all levels of government. These processes affect mining companies operating in Australia by impacting on timelines and the cost of developing a mining project. It is not uncommon for the granting of project approvals to take in excess of five years, meaning that mining companies struggle with productivity, efficiency, time frame and cost issues in respect to their projects in Australia. As the mining boom in Australia is moving from the investment to the production phase, it is now more important than ever to maintain a regulatory landscape that facilitates rather than discourages new investment.While one of our key arguments is that there is too much burdensome regulation and red tape in Australia, we are also strongly believe that regulatory intervention is necessary to ensure that appropriate checks and balances are in place to serve the public interest and manage environmental, health and safety, social and other development-related impacts that may arise from a mining project. However, the regulatory intervention in Australia has come to a point where it is excessive and starting to discourage valuable investment in mining projects for nominal return to the public. Excessive regulation or ‘red tape’ impedes productivity and competitiveness, deters investment and innovation and costs jobs, all of which ultimately impact on the growth of Australia and the standard of living of all Australians.This paper aims to examine and compare the federal, state and local regulations that govern mining projects in Australia. It will highlight how these regulations are unnecessarily complex, lengthy and duplicated and how they can be streamlined to reduce red tape. In 2013 the Mopani Copper Mine Mufulira plant in Zambia embarked on a project that was aimed at improving concentrator recoveries. The project commenced with the automation of the milling and flotation circuits. This involved the installation of new instrumentation, namely measurement devices and actuators, and the connection of these to new programmable logic controllers (PLCs).The infrastructure changes were followed by the implementation of basic proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers on the PLCs. Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) interfaces were also implemented to allow for switching between controller modes, inputting of setpoint variables and to provide a visual display for process monitoring. The final phase of the project involved the installation and commissioning of advanced process control (APC) solutions on the milling and flotation circuits. This work was carried out by Mintek over 21 on-site days. The APC solutions included the MillStar and FloatStar suites of advanced controllers.The MillStar control suite focused on stabilising the mill feed and mill discharge on the two primary mills as well as the flotation circuit feed. Mintek’s CyLas instruments, which provide a measurement of the hydrocyclone underflow angle, were also installed. The measurements were incorporated into the discharge stabilisation control on both milling circuits. The FloatStar level stabiliser controller provided flotation cell pulp level control on fourteen cells, including two columns.Performance tests showed that the Mintek APC system stabilised the mill feed and mill discharge while ensuring the process remained within operational constraints. The MillStar control system utilised the CyLas instrument to prevent roping on the hydrocyclone underflow. This was not always achieved under normal operation. Additionally, the flotation section was stabilised as a result of improved level control by the FloatStar control system.Performance comparisons showed that the Mintek control system improved the operation of the milling and flotation circuits resulting in a greater copper recovery.CITATION:Naidoo, A, De Gee, B E and Viviers, N, 2014. Whilst the value of Pit to Plant and Mine to Mill optimisation has been proven since the 1990s, sustaining the productivity and efficiency gains typically requires ongoing test work, blast trials, plant surveys, and model calibration services. In contrast, the input to digital twin Pit to Plant or Mine to Mill optimisation is tens to hundreds of millions of tonnes of standard mine operating data. This paper presents a series of digital twin case studies from across the mine value chain, including machine learning testing methodology, model accuracy statistics and the application of Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) for model interpretation. These case studies demonstrate how machine learning and data fusion ore tracking connects hundreds of millions of tonnes of downstream performance data to produce digital twin models (operating models that are continuously updated and integrated into the wider Mine to Mill/Pit to Plant ore tracking system). Digital twin modelling software has been used to add block model variables for dig-rate, crusher and mill throughput, recovery (tailings grade), lump yield, product grade and product quality, fines yield and fines in lump. Block-by-block predictions are added to the geological resource and grade control block models as new block model variables. These new block model variables are used across all mine planning time horizons from life-of-mine planning to daily schedules. In addition to the materials handling and geometallurgical prediction case studies, the paper also presents digital twin case studies for drill and blast simulation and plant set point optimisation. The case studies show how digital twin simulation enables drill and blast engineers to simulate the effect of different blast designs in different blast domains using the mines operating data. Plant set point optimisation applies mathematical optimisation algorithms to the machine learning model to provide live operational decision support to metallurgists and plant operators. The digital twin machine learning case studies demonstrate a digital and sustainable paradigm for Mine to Mill and Pit to Plant optimisation.

A mineral exploration manager's prime function is to provide a frame- work within which new mine production can be achieved. As part of this framework, the manager should know his employerb future requirements, and should direct exploration towards those particular mineral commodities which indicate satisfactory growth in consumption and price. Selection of these commodities can be assisted by studies of world reserves, and long term trends in price and consumption. Exploration planning is most efficient with an assured and reasonably uniform supply of funds.

Every day, around the world, thousands of tons of ore are loaded onto ships completing the miningproduction process and starting a multimillion-dollar economic transactions process. These transactions are based on the supply of tons of a commodity with certain specifications of assays of the main element (or physical properties) and concentration of contaminants, which are finally verified and evaluated by buyers, and also are considered ‘as true’ during Reconciliation process. On Sample Stations, this ‘true’ is based on a few kilograms of sample, often representing thousands of tons, that are sent to laboratories for further sample preparation and chemical analysis, where finally assay information is obtained from a few grams of pulverised sample, and are used for further production, planning, operational and financial-marketing decisions. Different International Standards (depending on the commodity) are used to establish the methodology to be followed, to set-up and obtain samples from the Sample Stations, and the specifications are visually inspected to give an estimation on the performance of the sampling point. This paper seeks to highlight with examples, the importance of the implementation of a continuously monitored Quality Program (QAQC and QM) on Sample Stations, focused on the parameters that directly affect the quality and representativeness of the samples. By this implementation, a proactive approach and better-informed decisions can be taken for mining companies to: a) quantify/improve production and reconciliation results, and b) to supply the right specifications of shipped ore, increasing the value of the Resources. Finally, laboratory results are normally used as an indication of the quality of the information applied for the economic transaction, but it should be considered, clarified and highlighted that the laboratory will only process and analyse a sample obtained from a Sample Station, and potential problems on bias or precision may occur in stages prior to the laboratory reception. Hence the importance of the implementation of a quality assurance program that protects multi-million dollar decisions.

Australia is currently developing and engineering a range of specialised processing options for rare earth (RE) (Lynas, 2011, Alkane, 2005), zirconia (Alkane, 2005), lithium (Galaxy Resources, 2008) and other special minerals and metals required in high-tech applications. The processing of lithium, zirconium and RE minerals is based on complex leaching processes which require extensive liquor clarification, solid liquid separation and solids washing. The filtration properties for those leach liquors, residues and precipitates are not well understood and differ drastically according to the process route applied. Thus, filtration test work is essential for equipment selection, sizing and design. Similar types of slurries are filtered in laterite nickel, TiO2 and other chemical oriented processes, while more experience is available here as those processes are applied widely for a number of decades. The increasing need for dry stacking of tailings requires advanced tailings filtration with properties differing drastically depending on tailings properties. More traditional mineral processes such as flotation commonly apply filtration. All of these and other cases require proper filtration test work particularly evaluation of vacuum versus pressure filtration and the need for cake pressing and/or air blowing for filter presses. Bench scale test work and/or pilot plant operation is common to determine filtration rates, achievable cake moisture and wash efficiencies and sometimes filtrate clarity. While those values are important, there is much more valid information to be obtained by filtration test work.This paper discusses the intricacy of filter selection and sizing based on driving forces (vacuum and pressure air, compression by mechanical means and slurry) and parameters (cake thickness, forces and times) and different processes utilised in common filtration equipment. It will discuss the in’s and out’s of filtration test work design, planning, and in particular data gathering, processing, reporting, evaluation and filter sizing from recent examples of bench and pilot scale filtration test work for above applications together with methods for predicting filtration performance for example where test work is lacking. One focus will be the realistic extrapolation of test work results towards different parameters utilised in full scale equipment and plants. The conclusion of the paper will contain checklist for filtration test work.

The present situation in the field of iron ore pelletizing is briefly described with particular view of the Lurgi/Dravo travelling grate process. To meet todays pellet quality requirements with regard to physical and metal- lurgical properties it is often necessary to add basic fluxing materials. It has been de- monstrated that for certain ores, basic addi- tives provide a considerable improvement in fired pellet quality. The production of self- fluxing pellets is becoming increasingly attractive. One Lurgi/Dravo plant is now in operation and another is under construction which were designed for the production of self- fluxing pellets. Self-fluxing pellets may be considered as the primary or exclusive blast furnace burden and the installation of a sinter plant is not necessary if the pellet plant-can handle all in-plant fines. Reference is made to the first pellet plant utilizing iron ore concentrate, in-plant fines and basic flux. The use of solid fuel for pellet indura- tion is discussed because of the increasing prices and possible shortages of heavy oil and natural gas. Since there is a strong tendency to increasing plant capacities, the design fea- tures of travelling grate pelletizing plants for productions up to 6 million tonnes are Discussed.

Geographical constraints, including steep terrain and high rainfall, at the Ok Tedi copper-gold mine in PNG’s Western Province present Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) with significant challenges in mine waste management. Waste management includes discharge of tailings into the local river system and storage of waste rock from the mine pit in waste rock dumps which erode into the river system. Copper bearing skarn mineralisation is associated with a massive sulfide (mainly pyrite) deposit. Consequently, waste rock and tailings can contain significant amounts of pyrite. Without appropriate management, these waste streams represent a risk of producing acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) when discharged to the river system. Throughout the life of the project, OTML have developed evolving strategies to manage mine wastes and mitigate AMD.

Rockfalls or significant deterioration of mine openings can have significant safety and financial impacts for mining operations. The failure of drives in underground mines sometimes highlight deficiencies in the mine risk management systems in detecting geotechnical hazards and to prevent events that can have significant impact. Consequences from these failures includes fatalities, injuries, loss of revenue, additional cost, and potentially a loss in Ore Reserves. Where the impacts are severe, it also affects families and communities linked to the operation. The assessment of underground excavations requires consideration of the full range and spectrum of geotechnical hazards, design aspects, ground support, layouts and sequences. Where the assessment of these are insufficient or incorrect, it can result in drive failures. Care must be taken that meeting production targets and personnel pressures do not result in a situation where production take preference over a proper risk-based assessment of the drives to be mined. The risk management approach is now widely accepted in the mining industry for the control and management of risks in underground mines. Codes of Practices (COP’s), Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP), Principal Hazard Management Plans (PHMP’s) and technical guidance documents has become the norm for describing the mines main hazards, risk levels and intimating controls for safe passage of vehicles and mine personnel. However, where there is a disconnect between these documents and what is actually being done at the mine site, the COP’s and/or Management Plans become ineffective (or vice versa). This disconnect may occur due to the actual content of these documents, a lack of resources, or a lack of understanding about the implementation. There is therefore a need for sites to have a documented and implemented risk-based approach for assessing underground mine development. This approach or system needs to identify all hazards and other factors affecting mine development stability early on in the design process, and outline the risk classification and controls required. Landscape interpretation, geology and mining history is being successfully used to explore options for sustainable community tourism product development. Recent work by the author in Europe and Australia has indicated the value of adding and producing interpretive information about mine and quarry locations - both active and inactive. This work has allowed for the branding and development of new sustainable community tourism products based on the landscape, folklore, mine and geological heritage.   Communities in rural areas are seeking new opportunities to sustain their local economies. Using a relatively new phenomenon called geotourism as a starting point; they have developed themed products connected to walking/cycling guides, interpretive panels and visitor centres. These themes can be linked to geology, archaeology, botany, local history and to industrial heritage sites such as old mines, to generate local employment. This new geotourism approach has successfully brought a new and greater audience to discover the value of geology and mining history.   Communities have established a unique place for themselves within the tourism marketplace using the geotourism brand. Other communities with an established tourism product are also now using geological and mine heritage via geotourism to rebrand and meet changing global trends. The pooling of resources under the banner of geotourism has led to cost effective marketing, targeting and promotion of products.   Geotourism has emerged strongly in Europe, North America and China in the last decade. The Australian minerals industry now has an opportunity to implement this new branding concept to assist and benefit the communities in which they run their activities. Communities can also take advantage of the potential to develop a sustainable geotourism business around a past or present mineral industry in their vicinity.

Quaternary warping and uplift of antiformal schist ranges in Central Otago, New Zealand, has resulted in recycling of alluvial gold from widespread, generally weakly auriferous, Miocene fluvial gravels that unconformably overlie the schist, into aprons of fan sediments along the range margins. Basement erosion during uplift has been limited and so gold input from sparse gold-bearing quartz veins in the schist has been relatively minor. In an eluvial cycle on the slopes of the ranges, chemical remobilization of gold occurs during oxidation and erosion of the Miocene sediments. The typically fine-grained (300-400¦m) gold undergoes chemical modification and grain size enhancement of up to two orders of magnitude, and much of it is redeposited in a large number of relatively small alluvial fans along the range margins. Groundwater mobility within the fans results in minor additional gold mobility and grain size Enhancement.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Numerous Fe-Cu-Au-rare earth element (REE) deposits have been identified within the Palaeoproterozoic Dongchuan Group of the Kangdian region of SW China. Geochronologic and geochemical data of the dolerite dykes and other volcanic rocks reveal extensional activity occurred about 1.7 Ga called ‘Kunyang Rifting’. The Kangdian region underwent variable degrees of extension, meaning that breakup in the central part of this region occurred earlier than in the north. Research on microphysiography, isotopic geochemistry and inclusions of the Yinachang typical Fe-Cu-Au-REE deposits suggest that the dominant mineralisation fluid is high-temperature, high-salinity magma fluid, containing alkalic components, volatile phase and Cu-Au. Metasomatism and mixing between this magmatic fluid and carbonaceous wall rock and meteoric water caused the precipitation of Fe, REEs and Cu-Au. A chalcopyrite Re-Os age from the Yinachang deposit obtained during this study is some 50–100 million years younger than the timing of emplacement of the deeply sourced Haizi and Dongchuan dolerites. The Yinachang deposit is a typical iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG)-type deposit, and the presence of this and other deposits in the Kangdian region indicates that the region hosts an intraplate extension-related IOCG system within the western edge of the Yangtze Block, China.CITATION:Hou, L, Ding, J, Zhang, J R, Zhu, S B, Wu, S Y and Peng, H J, 2015. This research was done to reduce silica from mixed hematite concentrate of Barfkar Iron Ore Sample and increase Fe grade using reverse flotation method (Depressing Hematite and floating Silica). The used sample in the reverse flotation tests was a mixture containing two types of hematite concentrates (Spiral cleaner concentrate and Slon-VPHGMS cleaner concentrate) with the percentage of 16 per cent and 84 per cent, respectively. Fe grade of two samples was 59.31 per cent and 57.52 per cent and SiO2 grade was 5.83 per cent and 6.71 per cent, respectively. After mixing, the Fe and SiO2 grade of the mixed sample was measured at 58.10 per cent and 6.20 per cent. For flotation tests, effect of variable operational parameters including feed size distribution (d80 = 130 microns and d80 = 53 microns), pulp solidity (25 per cent and 30 per cent w/w), pH (9.70, 10.20 and 11), Sodium silicate as a dispersant (500, 1000 and 2000 g/ton), Starch as a depressant (500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 g/ton) and EDA as a collector (180, 300, 400 and 500 g/ton) were investigated. For evaluating the influence of Sodium silicate and Starch dosage, initial flotation tests were performed on the main sample (d80 = 130 microns). These two parameters had no significant effects on the yield, Fe, and SiO2 grade of flotation concentrate based on test results. In the next step, screen analysis was carried out on the main sample for mineralogical studies. Accordingly, the suitable size distribution for releasing Fe and SiO2 particles was smaller than 53 microns. Therefore, the sample was crushed until d80 = 53 microns. Then, supplementary tests were performed on the crushed sample for studying the pH range, pulp solidity, and EDA collector dosage. After doing silica removal flotation tests based on the designed pattern and comparison of the results, the conditions consisting of size distribution d80 = 53 microns, pulp solidity 25 per cent, pH 10.20, Sodium silicate 1000 g/ton, Starch 1000 g/ton, and EDA 500 g/ton was selected as optimum values. In the last test, Fe and SiO2 grade was measured at 60.00 per cent and 3.93 per cent, respectively, and Fe recovery was obtained at 74.93 per cent.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM), in particular, has been likened in a somewhat inflammatory manner to be the ‘next asbestos’.From the business change perspective, there are three areas holding the industry back from fully engaging with the issue:There is no real feedback loop in any operational sense to assess the impact of investment or application of controls to manage diesel emissions.DPM are getting ever smaller and more numerous, but there is no practical way of measuring them to regulate them in the field. Mass, the current basis of regulation, is becoming less and less relevant.Diesel emissions management is generally wholly viewed as a cost, yet there are significant areas of benefit available from good management.This paper discusses a feedback approach to address these three areas to move the industry forward. The six main areas of benefit from providing a feedback loop by continuously monitoring diesel emissions have been identified: Condition-based maintenance. Emissions change instantaneously if engine condition changes. Operator performance. An operator can use a lot more fuel for little incremental work output through poor technique or discipline. Vehicle utilisation. Operating hours achieved and ratios of idling to under power affect the proportion of emissions produced with no economic value. Fuel efficiency. This allows visibility into other contributing configuration and environmental factors for the vehicle. Emission rates. This allows scope to directly address the required ratio of ventilation to diesel emissions. Total carbon emissions. G-ResourcesÆ Martabe Mine in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is a US$700 M world-class and world-scale operation in a country which, with a few notable smaller scale exceptions, has had no significant hard rock mining development in more than ten years.The mine was commissioned in the middle part of 2012 and poured first gold on 24 July. At full production Martabe will produce 250 000 oz/a of gold and 2 - 3 Moz/a of silver at cash costs in the lowest quartile. The mine location is on the west coast of North Sumatra, which experiences annual rainfall of 4 m with no notable dry season, adjacent to seismically active fault zones, and relatively close to a rural community of 31 000 people with no significant industrial experience.The management team has successfully forged strong links with the various government departments and levels in Jakarta, North Sumatra Province and the local Regencies; developed long-term relationships with the various community groups within the local district of Batangtoru to build a sustainable social licence; has dealt with the physical and environmental challenges presented by the project location, and has successfully raised more than US$900 M over a period of three years for the original acquisition then the development of the project.Whilst in its infancy of operation, the mine is set up to deliver a long-term sustainable future for the company, the shareholders, and the people of Batangtoru and all stakeholders generally. The depletion of high-grade hard and lumpy chrome ores has forced Zimbabwean ferrochrome producers to resort to low-grade friable ores that have an average of 28 per cent fines against a set limit of 12 per cent. Submerged open arc furnaces currently in use are associated with eruptions within the furnace because of the high amounts of fines, high energy consumption, as well as high SO2 and CO2 emissions. Traditionally employed agglomeration methods such as pelletising and the use of coke in the furnace have been discarded because of the pressure to lower operational costs and to achieve higher profit margins. This research aims to develop a method to incorporate lowgrade friable ore fines and unprocessed coal into production while lowering CO2 and SO2 emissions through a closed direct current (DC) arc furnace. The closed DC arc furnace could incorporate the friable ores and coal while maintaining above 90 per cent reduction rates. Preliminary findings also show that energy consumption could be reduced by up to 35 per cent by incorporating a pre-heating and pre-reduction system using the flue gases from the furnace. In the proposed circuit, the cost of production per ton of ferrochrome might be potentially lowered by an average of 30 per cent.

"Northparkes installed and commissioned a secondary crushing circuit in 2010 to debottleneck the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill constrained grinding circuits. Following further improvements to the circuit (inclusion of a double deck vibrating screen), the project successfully delivered finer feed to the SAG mill. The result of this project was an increase in the milled tonnes from 5.6 Mt/a in 2012 to 6.0 Mt/a in 2013.The increased throughput rates introduced new challenges with the circuit becoming power limited. How to best optimise the available comminution power, while delivering the optimal particle size to the flotation circuit was made the key optimisation objective. To achieve this objective, Northparkes initiated a project that included engaging comminution experts. Recommendations included changes to the SAG mill including mill lifter design, increased grinding media charge levels and reduced grinding media size with aim of producing a finer grind size.Northparkes implemented these recommendations along with some other changes to SAG discharge grates and the mill discharge vibrating screen. This achieved a substantial reduction in the flotation feed particle size distribution (approximately 20 microns) by utilising increased average SAG power utilisation, in turn resulting in a two per cent increase in copper recovery.With power utilisation now maximised, the next phase of optimisation has moved to the throughput-grind-recovery relationship and the cost benefit analysis of installing additional grinding power.Citation:Sulianto, Y, Trott, T, Morgan, D, Bell, T, Kock, F and Putland, B, 2016. As has been the case since the early Phoenician traders, the minerals used by modern man come from deposits scattered around the globe. The price received is more and more being set by worldwide supply and demand. Thus the price component in the profit equation:Profits = Material sold (units)x(Price/unit û Cost/unit) is largely determined by others. The recent price history for two of the major metals, copper and iron, are given in Figures 1 and 2, respectively. As can be seen there has been a steady decline in the prices (when expressed in constant dollars) over the 20 years which have lapsed since the first of the International Conferences on Mass Mining, æDesign and Operation of Caving and Sublevel Stoping MinesÆ was held. If one would look back over the entire 20th century this would also be the trend. Cost containment/reduction through efficient, safe and environmentally responsive mining practices is serious business today and will be even more important in the future with increasing mining depths and more stringent regulations. A failure to keep up is expressed very simply as: Profit This, needless to say, is unfavourable for all concerned (the employees, the company, and the country or nation). The mining companies have had to look at ways of reducing the expense part of the profit equation while maintaining safe, environmentally conscious operations. Table 1 summarises the rules for working in todayÆs economy.
