Australia’s mineral and metal exports have a substantial carbon footprint, twice that of its domestic emissions, mainly due to fossil-fuel-dependent downstream processes like processing into secondary metals and their transport. The country’s vast renewable energy and low-carbon hydrogen potential offer a promising alternative to mitigate this impact. These resources can be leveraged to displace fossil fuel use and become embedded into the metals value chain. Ultimately, it will yield ‘Green Metals’ that can be scaled to reduce the environmental footprint and provide an avenue for Australia’s vast green resources to be embedded (incorporated during production and supply) in green metals that can be exported. One potential green metal is copper, which is in great demand and likely to drive global decarbonisation through renewable electrification due to its role as an energy conductor. Given that Australia is a large producer and exporter of copper, this paper provides a techno-economic model of the copper value and applies it to Queensland (a hub of Australia’s copper production) as a case study. The results show that under incumbent hydrogen (A$8/kg) and renewable energy costs, the cost of green copper would be A$9704/t (~10 per cent higher than current copper costs). Further analysis revealed that the cost of hydrogen is a major cost driver; therefore, if the cost of hydrogen can be reduced to A$2/kg (a 2030 target of the Australian government), the cost of green copper would become competitive. Furthermore, if a carbon pricing regime ($54–79/kgCO2) is introduced, green copper would become competitive at a hydrogen cost of A$3/kg. Altogether, these findings provide insights for a future green copper export opportunity in Australia. Additionally, as the next step, the model can be extended to include other metals and released as an open-source resource for assessing global green metal opportunities.

The Kalgoorlie Golden Mile is proposed as an Archaean volcanogenic-type deposit, modified and redistributed along later-developed structures. Rich pyritctelluride and Green Leader gold mineralization is associated with the end phase of basic volcanism and, in a general sense, is confined to a broad interface zone between the products of marine basic volcanism and later acid volcanism. There is virtualIy no ore associated with the main body of acid volcanics.Green Leader is the local name of a type of ore that occurs at some igneous rock contacts in association with graphitic sediments and layered acidic tuffs. It is characteristicalIy green, of various shades, and commonly yields very high gold assays, the reasons for which are not apparent in hand specimen.Carbonates, carbonaceous shales, tuffites, rich gold ores, and acid and intermediate dykes, alI indicating a common heritage, are features common to the main ore hosts, viz. the Paringa Basalt (Calc Schist) and theGolden Mile Dolerite ("Quartz Dolerite Greenstone").Several probably related fracture systems have reconstituted most, but not all, of the original deposits into a large number of steep tabular lodes.Includes two sets of discussions and comments from later Proceedings volumes.

The local cumulative distribution function (lcdf) of a selective mine unit (SMU) can be estimated by conditional simulations using the statistics derived from the sample points, generating multiple equally probable scenarios. Conditional simulations permit the evaluation of the lcdf at any support, taking into account the spatial variability, ie the variogram, and the two statistical moments, mean and variance, of the conditioning samples. The SMU ore losses and dilution depend on the mining method and mining equipment selectiveness that, in its turn, depends on the predicted block size. A new approach to predict ore loss and dilution was developed in this study. Monte Carlo simulation is used to randomly generate a grade value derived from the lcdf at the mining stage (Zs_mc(t)) in order to make a decision about the SMU destination, ie processing plant (ORE) or waste dump (WASTE). If Zs_mc(t) is lower or equal to the cut-off (Z_cut-off) the block is ORE and, conversely, if Zs_mc(t) is higher than the cut-off (Z_cut-off) the block is WASTE. Considering these binary destinations ORE/WASTE, at the mining time t, and combining each realisation of the simulated random function Zcs_i (X), there are four possibilities for each SMU simulated value: 1. the block was simulated as ore and is actually ore (OO), 2. the block was simulated as ore and is actually waste (OW),3. the block was simulated as waste and is actually ore (WO), and 4. the block was simulated as waste and is actually waste (WW).The dilution factor is given by possibility 3 (WO), while the ore loss factor is represented by possibility 2 (OW). These results comprise the classical classification and reconciliation plots used in the mining industry. The new procedure proposed in this paper is based on the use of all the equally probable simulations to define the ore loss and dilution factors. An application of this methodology was carried out at Vale's iron mine in Brazil. The grade of silica was simulated and 50 multiple equally probable 3D models were generated. The mean and the standard deviation of the ore tonnage (OO + WO) for the 50 realisations, was 233 Mt and 0.5 Mt, respectively. The mean grade increased for the diluted ore (OO + WO) as well as their respective coefficient of variation (CV). The CV increases from 62 per cent in the undiluted ore (OO), to 101 per cent in the ore, considering the dilution factor (OO + WO). The mean ore loss (OW) was 10 Mt and the waste tonnage dilution (WO) was 9 Mt.

The construction of two drainage tunnels and the associated subvertical drain system at the Po Shan area in Hong Kong was completed in December 2009. This project is the first of its kind to utilise drainage tunnels and a network of subvertical drains to regulate the groundwater table to enhance the long-term stability of the hillside of Po Shan area.The groundwater levels, monitored by preinstalled piezometers, once exhibited dramatic drops during drilling of the subvertical drains; however, have recovered from natural replenishment after effectively plugging of the drains. The level of groundwater drawdown is in line with the design function of the subvertical drains. In order to understand the groundwater flow pattern in the Po Shan area during and after construction and to set out operation schemes for the subvertical drain system so as to control the groundwater table in the Po Shan area, a post-construction review has been carried out to examine the behaviour of the drainage system and its impact on the surrounding subsurface groundwater flow.This paper presents a review of the groundwater monitoring data during and after the construction of the drainage tunnel system covering a period of over 3.5 years. A simplified conceptual hydrological model is developed, which has been verified by the monitoring data, to capture the key elements with regard to groundwater variations in different stages of the construction. The performance of the tunnel and subvertical drain system as revealed from these field measurements is discussed.

"AEROPHINE® 3418A Promoter is a well-known and widely used collector and is an industry standard for its excellent selectivity and efficacy in the processing of complex polymetallic sulfide ores, particularly those containing silver. Until now, however, it has not found widespread use in primary nickel flotation.In an effort to increase nickel recovery without compromising selectivity over iron sulfides, Western Areas Forrestania Nickel operation trialled the use of AEROPHINE® 3418A as a secondary collector at low dosage. A series of ON/OFF trials were conducted, with the finding that a very low dose of AEROPHINE® 3418A increased nickel recovery by 0.6 per cent compared to using xanthate alone.This paper provides a brief operational history and overview of the Forrestania operations, a description of the trial and an analysis of the results.Citation:Emery, S, Flynn, M, Tan, K and Munro, C, 2016. The Bulolo Graben represents an intra-arc rift formed by activa- tion of transfer structures in an extensional setting formed be- tween the eastern and western sectors of the New Guinea Origin. Crustal thinning has facilitated the emplacement of dacitic Edie porphyry intrusions, locally as flow dome complexes, phreatomagmatic (diatreme) breccias and the Bulolo ignimbrite/ agglomerate as an extrusive equivalent of the Edie Porphyry. Gold mineralization is localized along intra-graben structures, com- monly at the intersection with cross structures and occurs in sub- sidiary dilational fractures and not the localizing major structures. Gradations are apparent in the styles of mineralization according to the degree of erosion of the hydrothermal system. Hamata occurs as the deepest mineralization of the quartz-sul- phide style Wau, Hidden Valley, and Edie Creek are dominated by carbonate-base metal styles. Kerimenge grades from quartz sulphide through carbonate-base metal to epithermal mineraliza- tion, the latter style also being present in the periphery of Edie Creek. Here, pre-existing fractures of the Edie Creek Structural Corridor have been reactivated by movement on NS structures to form the ore-hosting dilatant lodes. Fluid flow may have been from the vicinity of the Nauti diatreme margin and along the vein System.

Mining operations in the Obuasi mine of AngloGold Ashanti Limited began in 1897 using mainly gravity concentration and amalgamation to recover the gold from predominantly high-grade quartz ores. The mine is primarily an underground operation, although some surface mining still takes place. Ore is currently processed by two main treatment plants: the Sulfide Treatment Plant (STP) for underground ore and the tailings treatment plant for tailings reclamation operations. STP was commissioned in February 1994 to treat 180 000 t/m of double refractory gold ore and it hosted the then world's largest commercial scale bacterial oxidation plant which uses Gencor's BIOX« technology. Gold is recovered by gravity and flotation, with the regrinding of the sulfide concentrate before bio-oxidation to liberate locked gold in sulfi de minerals. The BIOX« product is leached using the carbon in leach (CIL) process. Gravity gold recovery is a major component of STP operations and its contribution to overall plant recovery is about ten to 13 per cent. Gravity recovery has undergone series of technological upgrading, since the very first circuit which consisted of a Knelson concentrator and a Gemeni shaking table which was incorporated into the milling circuit at the start of the plant. Presently, each of the gravity circuits which consists of Knelson concentrator(s), cyclones and Gekko InLine Reactors (ILR), are located at the Milling and BIOX« circuits. More recently a new gravity recovery facility comprising of four 48 inch Knelson concentrators and cluster of ten inch cyclones have been incorporated at the tail of the flotation circuit. An additional ILR will be commissioned in 2010 to treat the concentrate generated from the new Semi Autogenous Mill #2 (SAG 2) Knelson: concentrator tower under construction. Since the inception of STP, significant gravity recoverable gold has been recovered via Knelson concentrators and the employed circuits have seen a number of modifications and upgrades, motivated by ore mineralogical changes and recovery concerns. The pioneering adoption of the ILR technology in 2001 and 2003 was a critical factor in enhancing the improved recovery benefit of the gravity circuits. Therefore the objective of this paper is to highlight the mine's experience in the gravity recoverable gold process with emphasis on plant modifications and gravity equipment upgrade. Operational challenges and the contribution of gravity gold to overall plant recovery are also discussed.

In planning mine ventilation systems, heat issues are normally associated with deep-level mines where auto-compression and virgin rock temperatures play a major role. However, a number of mines suffer from high ambient temperatures and humidity, very steep virgin rock temperature gradients and an influx of hot groundwater. Mines in Australia and, particularly, South-East Asia have to deal with these environmental conditions, both in the operational and planning phases. These operations normally have to take heat into consideration during the planning stages at much shallower depths. In high rainfall regions, the water table is saturated and groundwater flow rates are particularly high, which add significant water heat load potential to the mine ventilation system.This paper considers the ventilation challenges associated with hot groundwater conditions in mechanised mines. The paper is based on specific project experience gained from a number of projects in the United States, Australia and South-East Asia and draws on data from mines that experience hot groundwater conditions. In underground mines experiencing dynamic events, there is an ever-present challenge to design and maintain a capable ground support system. One key component of ground support systems is surface support, which serves the essential roles of retaining failed rock and transferring forces generated by surface displacement to rock bolts or other support elements. Observations underground show that in many instances, standard mesh panels alone do not provide sufficient dynamic support to retain substantial bulking failures imposing displacement onto mesh, and in such cases Mesh straps and W-straps may be employed. Determining the performance of surface support elements proves to be difficult, with a multitude of variables at play in the underground environment. Quite comprehensive work has been completed on laboratory testing of surface support systems; however, very little work has been conducted on in situ dynamic testing of Mesh straps and W-straps. In 2019 in Western Area’s Flying Fox Mine, in situ dynamic testing was conducted on a series of Mesh straps and W-straps using Sandvik’s in situ Dynamic Test Rig (DTR). The testing regime applied impact energies from 5.1 to 15.3 kJ to Mesh straps and W-straps. The performance of the straps that did not fail was a maximum absorbed energy of 9.3 kJ and 14.2 kJ for the Mesh straps and W-straps respectively. The testing successfully demonstrated the ability of Sandvik’s DTR to test not only rock bolts, but also surface support elements, creating new testing and research possibilities. The testing also provided important design guidance data that is not practicable to obtain using laboratory dynamic testing facilities.

This work goes beyond the general perception of how the well-known mine to mill process can be applied, by applying deeper knowledge along the mining chain. Grade deportment and dilution are considered at the mining stage, and modelled with the new SMI blast movement simulator, linking with the block model data. Assessing the shift to a considerably more competent section of the orebody is quantified via substantial milling trials at standard and higher-intensity blasts. These were stockpiled for batch processing through the mill to ensure feed integrity. The trial work included operating the mill at widely different fillings to develop Grindcurve milling responses. Additionally, model informed process control is initiated via a mill prediction tool.It has been found that accounting for blast movement for the higher intensity blasts could generate additional value of around $1.5M per blast. With the high-intensity blast and changing mill control, the plant was easily able to exceed projected mill throughputs with the far more competent Pipeline ore. Strategies to shift the workload and debottleneck the milling circuit were proposed and proven during the milling trials, demonstrating an increase in throughput of 7 per cent despite running at a lower SAG mill speed, and potential of 16 per cent for increasing the SAG mill to standard operating speed. A number of process improvement opportunities have been identified to enhance current productivity and ensure long term capability to process the considerably more competent future ores. All of this is being linked in with the major digitisation program at the Barrick Cortez site, with an objective of linking all the data into a mine-wide process optimisation system, that can embed the processes by providing process-wide data access and production support via the future dynamic models linking ore body knowledge to productivity along the full process chain.CITATION:Powell, M, Yahyaei, M, Geronimo, J, Yussupova, Z and Kumar, P, 2018. Waihi Gold Mining Co Ltd [WGM], operated by Normandy Mining, has been internationally recognised for its achievements in environmental management at the Martha Mine at Waihi. In a proactive approach to dealing with community concerns regarding blast vibrations on the North Wall cutback, trials were performed using the Cardox System [Cardox], to determine feasibility of achieving economic fragmentation of andesite overburden whilst bettering management levels of 5 mm/s peak particle velocity. Cardox is a non-explosive pressure breaking system which uses high pressure CO2, Results against conventional Ammonium Nitrate/Fuel Oil [ANFO] using a variety of delays showed that conventional blasting techniques could produce marginal fragmentation within the management levels with occasional excursions, whereas Cardox produced the required fragmentation while not registering on the vibration monitoring equipment. Fragmentation to enable normal excavation by a Hitachi EXII00 hydraulic excavator was achieved with a yield of 16m3 per round. The trails indicated that fragmentation with Cardox at the yields required of over 18m3 per round was possible with further product development. The trial demonstrated that non-explosive pressure breaking is feasible and its application warranted where environmental concerns affect the cost-benefit economics of production blasting in sensitive areas.

The development of regional resource synergies in intensive areas with concentrations of minerals processing industries provides a significant avenue towards sustainable resource processing. Gladstone (Queensland) and Kwinana (Western Australia) are two of AustraliaÆs major heavy industrial areas. There are a number of successful regional synergies in both areas. In addition to the existing regional synergies in both areas, more potential synergy opportunities appear to exist which, upon implementation, could benefit industry, the environment and the community. To further enhance the development of such potential regional synergies, the Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (http://www.csrp.com.au) commissioned research projects to facilitate the identification of potential synergies and assist with their implementation in both regions. This paper presents a selection of specific examples from both regions to illustrate the sustainability benefits from regional synergy developments. Although the composition of industries in the Gladstone and Kwinana regions is different both in terms of geography and industry diversity, similarities in synergy developments for both regions are apparent. Consequently, the examples discussed in this paper are organised around the key themes of water, energy and inorganic by-products. Comparison on a theme basis highlights success factors of successful synergies and demonstrates the range of benefits resulting from their implementation.

The base of separation at Gol-e-Gohar iron ore plant (Sirjan in the south of Iran) is magnetic separation after milling. Magnetic separation in the plant is divided into two parts: dry magnetic separation and wet magnetic separation. Sixty-five per cent of the plant production belongs to the dry magnetic separator section. Therefore, investigation of this part of the plant is necessary. Prediction of plant production is one of the most important subjects in mineral processing plants. That means, before feed enters the plant, specification of production has been calculated with laboratory methods. The purpose of this paper is the prediction concentrate quality has achieved from the dry magnetic separator. The content of iron in the final dry concentrate will be predicted, with laboratory, pilot and modelling methods, before feed enters the plant. Different variables are used in this approach, which consist of: speed of the first dry magnetic separator (rougher), speed of the third dry magnetic separator (cleaner), iron content in plant feed, size of 80 per cent passing of feed, size of 20 per cent passing of feed and iron content in pilot dry magnetic separation concentrate that performs in a standard manner. The artificial neural network is used for modelling and one of its branches is the radial basis network (RBN). Iron content in magnetic separating concentrate in plant will be introduced as the target and will be calculated with the RBN method. In the RBN method, a set of data enters to neural network and they will be trained and simulated. Finally, the target will be predicted. Ultimately, the original target (actual iron content) and the predicted target (predicted iron content) compare and error of them will be calculated. The obtained result is acceptable and satisfactory.

PT Freeport IndonesiaÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine is the new underground block caving mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) which started production in mid-2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining method and will be the fourth underground mine opened within the EESS deposit. A review of the DOZ extraction bolting design was conducted in November 2000. The aim of this review was to re-evaluate the effectiveness of the current design in relation to bolt length and spacing and to challenge some questions about the technical background of the design. For instance, the influence of the rock condition on the design. To review this bolting design, several books and papers are reviewed and several experienced people have been contacted to give their opinion. The methodology used for this review is:reviewing the technical background of current design; collecting ideas and alternatives; collecting data from books and personal communication and conducting analysis; and conclusion and proposed design.

Literature surveys and testing methods and equipment are described. The use of flocculants' in hydraulic filling has been tested both in laboratory and in mines and the results are very promi- sing. The depletion of the richest ore deposits and the increase in number of mining projects involving deposits with complex mineralogy, higher competence and lower grade has led to an eminent need for improving understanding on multicomponent behaviour in mineral processing. One particularly relevant case is the ball milling of itabirite iron ores fed to the processing plant of Minas-Rio operation in Brazil. Dealing with the two main mineralogical components of the ore, namely hematite and quartz, the operation faces some challenges to improve understanding on how the two components behave in the process. Mathematical models have showed potential to give support in this task, but its applications to describe this type of industrial-scale grinding is still missing. The present work demonstrates the application of a multi-component ball mill model to simulate a closed ball mill circuit with hydrocyclones using the commercial software Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES). Model was calibrated on the basis of bench-scale tests and industrial surveys. Multi-component simulation results are then compared to those considering a single component in the feed, demonstrating the value and great insights that can be achieved by using the former in optimising plant operation.

The high production rates achieved from mass mining methods such as block caving, sublevel caving and longwall mining require large conveyor belts, trucking loops (diesel/electrical) and rail systems for ore handling. However, the ore handling systems used in mass mines introduce a significant amount of heat into the overall ventilation system, which may be problematic at depth or in mines located in hot climates.In particular, the heat load from a conveyor system is not always well understood and consists of various components, including frictional heat from idlers, heat from electrical motors, heat from the drive train and heat from broken rock transported on the conveyor system. This paper presents results from a study that investigated the heat introduced to the ventilation air from a large conveyor system. The conveyor system transports ore with a maximum virgin rock temperature of 41°C from a depth of over 1 km. The Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) processing plant was designed for 35Mt/y with ball mills expected to deliver a combined new mill feed rate of 4837 tonnes/hr. Since beginning commercial production in late 2009, the plant has steadily increased throughput to meet design capacity in 2014 and reached 37 Mt/y in 2015. Through improved efficiencies, changes to the milling circuit have taken place since commissioning to take the plant beyond its design to an actual throughput of 39.0 Mt in 2017 and a budgeted throughput of 39.4 Mt/y this year.The NBG milling circuit has four parallel ball mills, each consisting of a 7.9 x 13.4 m ball mill with twin 7.5 MW fixed speed motors in closed circuit with twelve 650 mm cyclones. Each mill is fed by two wet screens with the undersize gravitating to a mill discharge hopper where it is combined with the ball mill discharge and pumped to hydrocyclones for classification. The cyclone underflow is re-ground to a target P80 of 150 µm.This paper will focus on process improvements made to the NBG milling circuit which include cyclone reconfiguration, fine screen panel redesign, implementation of an expert control system, mill power draw increase and grinding media changes to take NBG beyond its design throughput.CITATION:McCamley, C, Petrucci, P and Blay, K, 2018. CSA Mine, named after the nationalities of the mines first owners being Cornish, Scottish, Australian, is one of Australia’s deepest and highest-grade copper mines. A combination of the modified Avoca method and shrinking was a standard practice where production rings were fired against and bogged to waste fill. This method resulted in dilution and involved rehandling of waste material to refill the bogged stopes in the Western region and the QTS Central. The introduction of pre-charging blastholes using a wireless initiating system (WebGen™) has enabled CSA to design and fire stopes in reverse. This involves the use of a pre-charged Temporary Rib Pillar (TRP) against the waste fill material in a previously mined stope. The temporary pillar reduces dilution and improves conventional bogging as material is blasted towards the drawpoint rather than towards the waste fill material. Additional drill, prep and blast re-work is reduced or completely removed as rings can be charged prior to, in conjunction with, or after, charging of the slot. This is a safer practice as the charge crew spend no time working adjacent to a brow or open void. A TRP trial was conducted in the western orebody at CSA. The risk of exposure to a brow or open void while charging underground, and the bogger rehandling of waste material was successfully eliminated. Once reverse stoping was established in modified avoca stopes at CSA, two TRPs were implemented in challenging ground conditions in the QTS Central region. The TRPs were utilised in a retreating four-way intersection to extract a central diminishing pillar to close the level out. The ore recovered in this stope provided 5 per cent of CSA’s copper for the year. Without pre-charging with a wireless initiating system, two 5 m pillars totalling 6936 t of ore at 7 per cent either side of the stope would not have been recovered. CSA has implemented the practice of reverse stoping in modified avoca stopes using TRP for ten stopes since the successful trial. The impact of seismic loading on open pit slope stability in Australia is often only considered where the slopes are located adjacent to tailings facilities or other major infrastructure. The debate regarding application of seismic loading in open pit design in Australia is usually founded on limited reporting on significant damage of open pit operations during earthquakes, the common perception that earthquakes do not occur in Australia or that they are unlikely to occur during the mine life of the mine. It is frequently overlooked that pit slopes that have withstood strong earthquakes in highly active seismic regions are often designed under strict seismic guidelines. This paper discusses the factors that impact earthquake performance of open mine slopes. These factors include topography, slope geometry, rock material and mass properties, water management and intrinsic pit design. Further, the paper presents insights into the characteristics of earthquake activity in Australia such as magnitude distribution, earthquake depths, areas prone of earthquake activity and general seismic hazard that are relevant to pit design. Guidelines are provided on the conditions and circumstances under which earthquake design in open pit mining should be considered. In addition, this paper provides recommendation on the applicable methods for assessment of the impacts of earthquake loading on pit slope stability.
