The in-pipe treatment of slurries with polymer addition shortly prior to deposition is a noteworthy emerging technology of increasing popularity. Although polymer treatment has been shown to substantially modify and improve depositional and dewatering behaviour in a significant number of cases, the impacts of polymer treatment on geotechnical performance of tailings are less well understood. For example, certain combinations of polymer and slurry type have been shown to result in lower final densities at a given vertical effective stress. Despite these lower densities, polymer-treated tailings often exhibit peak undrained shear strengths consistent with untreated material. However, the sensitivity and/or brittleness of the material may be negatively influenced by the looser state created. Although these changes have been studied, most testing available in the literature was undertaken on relatively ‘fresh’ samples of polymer-treated material. However, significant shear may occur following treatment and prior to the commencement of settling and self-weight consolidation as the material moves down the beach.To study the effects of shearing on the subsequent performance of polymer-treated tailings, a test program consisting of consolidation, triaxial and direct simple shear tests was undertaken on presheared polymer-treated material. Materials used were identical to those used in previously published studies on the impacts of polymer treatment in a ‘fresh’ condition. Shearing of the polymer-treated material generally appeared to lessen the impacts of the polymer treatment process. However, the behaviour of the material when sheared indicated that the polymer was still impacting the behaviour of the material in some respects. The results indicate the importance of the consideration of shearing on material behaviour when planning and designing a tailings deposit where polymer treatment is to be implemented.CITATION:Reid, D and Fourie, A, 2015. The grouping and segregation error is one of Gy’s seven errors that cannot be measured in any qualitative manner because of its transient and changing characteristics each time the sample is handled mechanically. Attempts to calculate the mean and variance of the segregation error is considered by some as ‘an exercise in futility’ that would not help us achieve representative sampling. This research is aimed at understanding the process of segregation of dense, finely divided and dilute particulate materials supported in a clean quartz substrate during intense agitation. Several mixtures of fine-grained materials including steel, tungsten carbide and gold grains were used in these experiments. Four hundred grains of each of the minerals and metals at a top size of 2 mm were mixed with approximately 600 g of finely ground quartz material (95 per cent passing 2000 microns) in a 500 ml plastic jar with a sealable lid. The mineral–?metal mixtures were analysed in three steps using microfocus X-ray computed tomography. Step one consisted of rolling the containers on a flat surface in an attempt to concentrate the mineral and metal grains in the core of the supporting substrate; this is a base case that can be reconstructed after each session of analysis. The second step involved gentle and vigorous shaking of the mixtures in order to segregate the denser minerals and metals from the supporting quartz substrate. In some cases, a third step involved splitting the sample through a riffle splitter. Three-?dimensional images of the surface of each grain, its volume and its X-, Y- and Z-coordinates, before and after intense agitation of the container, were interpreted from the reconstruction of the tomographic X-ray data. The spatial analysis of grains using cell declustering and 3D variography provided a useful means of characterising the distribution of the grains in space and the extent to which they had become segregated during the process of agitation. Spatial analysis indicates that in general, grouping and continuity of grains is weakly developed. The modelled nugget effect remains high for most tests, indicating that grains of similar size did not group together strongly. Agitation through rolling provided the best continuity, although not consistently in the long axis of the plastic jar. The nugget effect was consistently highest, and the range of continuity shortest in samples that had been split, indicating that the grouping and continuity were reduced through splitting the sample. Initial results indicate that very little segregation of the minerals and metals occurs in the quartz substrate. This is somewhat counter-intuitive, but suggests that the effects of agitation on mixtures of dense minerals and metals in substrates of lower density do not lead to excessive segregation. Differences in behaviour between dense materials in response to agitation are evident. Grains of different composition and shape did not group and segregate in a predictable manner in response to the agitation methods. High-nugget gold orebodies are difficult to model in 3D because samples from diamond drill core are generally too small to provide reliable estimates of the gold content of the larger body of rock, and therefore interpolation of gold assay values between drill holes is also unreliable. As a result, gold resources are generally underestimated in areas of high nugget. In practice, proxies for gold mineralisation, such as presence of alteration, specific structures or high vein density, have been used by geologists to predict rocks which are favourable for mineralisation. However, there has been no automated method for combining the predictive capabilities of several proxies, except by human judgement.We have been developing a method to combine several different types of geological features or geochemical analyses into a single measure using conditional probability. Conditional probability provides a meaningful numerical measure for the favourability of rocks for containing high-grade gold mineralisation. This measure can be interpolated in the exploration space, providing a sound basis for a 3D model of the orebody. The Worthing Mine near Hallett Cove. 20 km southwest of the cite of Adelaide, belongs to Aus- tralia's first mining era, which took place in South Australia between 1841 and 1851 (Figure 1). Oper- ations began in 1849 only six years after the com- mencement of metal mining in Australia at Glen Osmond. Although not as historically significant as Glen Osmond (1841), or the much larger copper mines of Kapunda (1844) or Burra (1845) its importance lies with its Cornish enginehouse and chimney. The Worthing enginehouse, built in 1851-1852 is the oldest remaining in Australia and certainly the most significant relic of Australia's first mining era. Six other stone enginehouses were built during that period: at Kapunda in 1848 and 1850: at Burra in 1849, 1850 and 1851; and at Tungkillo in 1849. All of these houses have long since dis- appeared although the foundations of one (Kapunda, 1850) still remain. The significance of the Worthing site is enhanced by its magnificant environmental setting in the bare, steep valley of Field River. Currently (1986) the Worthing Mine is the only site within the City of Marion which is on the Register of State Heritage Items. The site is also included in the Classified List of the National Trust of South Australia and on the Register of the National Estate.

This paper looks at the design of the Bentayga raisebore with subsequent back analysis using a LiDAR survey. A search for LiDAR raisebore assessment publications shows little work has been done on this subject. The paper examines the empirical design and RS2 modelling assessment with the bored condition. The high resolution of the LiDAR enabled mapping of weak structures that were located on the geotechnical investigation hole the orientations of which could not be determined. In addition, the scan showed were water ingress was occurring, potential stress overbreak and structural controls on stability. The LiDAR results were able to confirm no additional support work such as a shotcrete liner is necessary. The LiDAR results have been analysed in one metre increments as volume of overbreak against the empirical stability criteria (McCracken & Stacey 1989). The future use of LiDAR mapping over a range of rock mass conditions will provide quantification of the established empirical assessment improving its reliability. It is also a useful and accurate tool to monitor long term stability of a raisebore due to stress change or ore pass due to wear.

The main problem of geostatistical simulations is to reproduce the real characteristics of the mineral deposit when there are few conditioning data. In this case, the geological interpretation, based on structures, geophysics and geological maps, plays the major role in terms of resource evaluation.The paper investigates the use of principal component analysis (PCA) to help classify multiple geostatistical categorical simulations considering the similarity among them and the interpreted model, herein referred as training image (TI).An iron deposit with four lithological facies, in a specific horizontal plane, was used as case study for two-dimensional (2D) simulations. Sequential indicator simulations (SIS) was used to obtain ten equally probable 2D images, which were generated and compared against the interpreted model (TI).In this study, 11 random variables are comprised by the vector of ten SIS realisations plus the training image (TI). The similarity between the TI and each SIS realisation is measured using the angle between the TI and SIS vectors projected in the new coordinate systems (PCA factors). It is possible to order the SIS realisations from the highest to the lowest PCA factor taking into account the TI similarity.The visual analysis of the images shows coherence in the PCA results as a method to measure similarity. This methodology can be used as a post-processing tool to rank simulation results and to select the ones which better represent the prior known geology or to compare the quality of different methods of simulation.

Since 1948, ValeÆs Matte Separation Plant has been successfully using magnetic separation and froth flotation to separate the copper sulfide, nickel sulfide and Ni-Cu metallic alloy contained in Bessemer matte for downstream processing. Though some equipment upgrades have been performed over the years, the flow sheet has generally remained unchanged since the early 1970s. The need to improve metallurgical performance led to the trial of a scalping flotation column to produce a final copper concentrate ahead of the cleaner circuit feed to take advantage of a high degree of copper mineral liberation, reduce cleaner-recleaner circulating loads and decrease the associated loss of selectivity. Plant results indicated that 50 per cent of copper contained in the rougher concentrate could be recovered at final grade target. Results indicate that up to a 1.5 per cent increase in copper recovery to copper concentrate was achieved during the scalper trial due to a reduction in the generation of fine chalcocite which has historically been observed to report to flotation tailings due to surface contamination. Mine-to-mill studies have previously demonstrated downstream productivity benefits from relatively modest increases in blast energy, or powder factor. These increases have up to now been limited by safety and environmental constraints, since excessive blast energy can result in flyrock, unacceptable vibration, airblast and wall damage.Here, a new blasting method that overcomes these constraints is presented. For the first time it is possible to employ powder factors that are several fold higher than conventional blasting. Independent modelling has shown that such powder factors can potentially increase mill throughput by 20 to 40 per cent. The economic implications are substantial, both in terms of increasing production in existing operations and in consideration of capital and plant requirements for greenfield sites. In addition, mill electricity and grinding media consumption and their associated costs and energy and emissions penalties can be reduced.This method represents a step-change in blasting practices. It involves a novel design utilising dual blast layers within a single blast event, all initiated with state-of-the art electronic blasting systems. The energies in the lower layer can be as high as five times the standard energies, providing for intense fragmentation of the ore. Results from blast models have been confirmed in field trials of the method.Open cut gold mining, in particular, stands to benefit from this method. As gold grades decline, milling costs and throughput increasingly become constraints on production that can be alleviated with this new method. Additionally, it opens possibilities for improved recovery. Blast modelling studies show that dilution of gold ore within the blast can be managed with the new method. Furthermore, it has been shown that vibration from the new method is actually lower than from conventional blasting, allowing the use of the technique in proximity to mine highwalls and other key infrastructure such as underground orepasses.It is concluded that this new method could substantially increase gold mine production and profitability while reducing overall energy consumption and associated emissions.CITATION:Brent, G F, Dare-Bryan, P, Hawke, S and Rothery, M, 2013. Pre-concentration of low grade ores via the rejection of low/no value materials based on fragment size is the subject of many published papers and studies over the past decade. However, the possibility of upgrading should not limited to low grade ores given the high cost of capital, energy, water, reagents, and ultimately tailings storage across the mining industry. Mining and processing facilities at Olympic Dam consist of an: 1) underground mine where ore is extracted via sublevel open stoping and 2) integrated processing plant located on the surface which produces Cu-cathode, Au-Ag bullion and uranium oxide concentrate. Blasted ore is trucked/trained to underground crushers which produce an ore feed with a product size P80 = -145 mm. Crushed ore is then hoisted to the surface and delivered to the ROM pads via an overland conveyor. The typical copper grade of mill feed is approximately 2 wt%. A rapid assessment of the potential to upgrade Olympic Dam mill feed prior to the ROM pads via rejection of low value materials based on fragment size was completed using existing data. Three separate datasets were utilised to assess the deportment of Cu, U, Au across size ranges of 200 mm down to sub-8 m. Cumulative grade vs cumulative mass distribution graphs for each element were produced. This data clearly demonstrates that Cu, U, Au grades remain constant down to ~212 m, which happens to be the liberation size of the sulfides. Hence, no potential to upgrade the ore stream via rejection of +200 mm - to ~212 m sized materials prior to milling. Mineralisation within the Olympic Dam Fe-oxide Cu-U-Au-Ag deposit (IOCG) occurs as disseminated sulfide grains within granite- to hematite-rich breccias. The typical sulfide grain size is sub-200 m that supports the outcomes of the grade deportment by fragment size study.

High chrome grinding media has been used in the mining industry for quite some time, as it often proves economical on a wear basis. However, it is unusual for an operation to change to high chrome solely due to its metallurgical benefits. KagaraÆs Mount Garnet operation made the change from forged steel to high chrome media after laboratory testwork indicated that copper grades and recoveries would improve. The outcome was remarkable with positive changes in pulp chemistry throughout the circuit accompanied by marked improvements in copper, lead and zinc grades and recoveries. Reagent dosage rates were reduced, often by more than half, and the grinding media wear rate dropped to less than a third of the wear rate of the forged steel media. The economic analysis showed that out of the total increase of revenue and savings from metallurgical improvements and reagent and media consumption reductions the metallurgical improvements made up approximately 73 per cent, the reduced reagents saved 25 per cent and the savings through reduced media wear contributing by just over one per cent. This indicates that the popular view of high chrome media only being trialled in the plant for wear economics is outdated and the focus of operations should be shifted to using high chrome media for the metallurgical benefits.

ArcelorMittal Prijedor is a goethitic iron ore mine located in the north-west of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which mainly supplies ArcelorMittal’s European subsidiaries. Annual production of the asset stands at the level of 1.5–2.1 million tons of iron ore product which is sent to ArcelorMittal Zenica steelmaking plant. Two types of products with approximately 50 per cent Fe are generated in Prijedor through a process composed by crushing, screening, and magnetic separation stages. Within this process one of the tailings produced is called ‘ultrafines’. The ‘ultrafines’ product corresponds to the desliming hydrocyclones overflow in Prijedor plant, which is classified in a size fraction below 25 μm and corresponds to about 5 per cent of feed. This material is richer in iron than the coarser size fractions of the ore but do not present a good performance in concentration processes. In this way, several studies have been carried out during the last years to find solutions to use the ‘ultrafines’ material without success. In this context, the possibility of dehydroxylate the goethite contained in the material transforming the mineral into hematite and thus increasing the iron grade of the final product was investigated. During the research, several dehydroxylation tests with different temperatures and time of exposure were performed. Using dihydroxylation process at temperatures higher than 800°C it was possible to produce a material with 43 per cent Fe from the original 39 per cent Fe ‘ultrafines’ sample. In addition, the dehydroxylation tests confirmed that goethite becomes completely transformed into hematite at 400°C (with an exposure time of 60 mins) and material is completely sintered at 1200°C. A simulation study based on dehydroxylation tests results showed that it would be possible to use a ‘ultrafines’ product with Fe grade higher than 45 per cent to produce a material with 50 per cent Fe through a complete dehydroxylation process.

To enable ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to be used on an equal weight basis with nitroglycerine explosives, smaller diameter bore holes became necessary with consequent modifications to drill steel and burden on holes. Detonation of AN-FO in small diameter holes proved successful both with and without primer charges but some alterations were required to adapt anoloders to the smaller holes.Important factors in training all operators in the new charging method were the retention of improved fragmentation, avoidance of excessive overbreak and keeping wall rock dilution to an absolute minimum. The successful storage of ammonium nitrate in climatic conditions with daily temperature fluctuations above and below the critical 90°F has been achieved.INTRODUCTIONTechnical aspects of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-Fa) blasting agent are well covered in recent literature. This paper deals primarily with the manner of its introduction as the principal explosive underground at Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. and with the many problems encountered in the process. Following reasonably successful experimental firings in June 1962', using granular ammonium nitrate and an anoloder, permission was granted by theWestern Australian Mines Department to carry out test work in selected areas of the mine. Ausmelt is supplying commercial quantities of an alkyl hydroxamate flotation collector AM28 for flotation of oxide and supergene base metal ores and tailings. AM28 is a non-hazardous product used as a ten per cent to 50 per cent solution in dilute potassium hydroxide. It is a selective flotation collector for oxide or oxidised base metal minerals and replaces conventional sulfidisation for oxide mineral flotation. At Radio Hill, the AM28 is used in conjunction with traditional sulfide collectors, which allows simultaneous flotation of oxide and sulfide copper minerals. The Fox Resources Radio Hill copper concentrator near Karratha, Western Australia, is currently configured to treat supergene copper ore sourced from the West Whundo open pit. This Archean VMS type copper deposit has been deformed and remobilised with uplift, erosion and weathering to form a significant supergene zone. The sulfide copper minerals present in the upper zone are digenite and chalcocite with lesser chalcopyrite and covellite. Oxide copper minerals present include cuprite, with lesser malachite and azurite. Gangue minerals include quartz, talc and chlorite. Plant trials at Radio Hill are reported for supergene West Whundo ore, where the AM28 was stage added into the circuit at nominally 80 g/t. Plant data over three months shows the copper recovery increased consistently from around 50 - 60 per cent to above 70 per cent when AM28 was added. This has been proven statistically. The grade of the concentrate was consistent with and without AM28, at nominally 22 - 24 per cent copper.

"Surface support is a key component of most ground support systems which are applied as a means of reducing the risk of rockfall occurrence and maintaining serviceability of mine development. Surface support has two primary functions: distributing the applied load throughout the system by providing connection between rock bolts retaining smaller rocks that unravel between rock bolts.Confinement is also provided to the rock mass, which may increase its capacity to resist further degradation or loosening.Surface support has been routinely installed in most underground mines around the world for many years, yet the operators are still not always certain which type is best suited for deformable ground conditions. A number of factors need to be taken into consideration prior to selecting the type of surface support liner, such as its capacity, availability, practicality of installation, manual handling and loading conditions (static or dynamic) to ensure the system’s optimal performance in terms of safety and costs.This paper presents an overview of the surface support types currently used in underground mines in Australia. Shotcrete, weld mesh, high-tensile chainlink mesh, reinforced weld mesh and high energy absorption (HEA) mesh are discussed. A detailed description of each system is provided in terms of capacity, energy absorption, installation cycle and costs. The cost of each system has been normalised to the units of energy absorbed. Gold in sulfide ores is associated predominantly with sulfide minerals and occurs as both microscopic and submicroscopic particles. In non-refractory sulfide ores, gold occurs mainly as coarse- and medium-grained particles. Minute inclusions and submicroscopic gold usually account for a minor portion. In contrast, gold in refractory sulfide ores occurs mainly as minute particles and submicroscopic gold, and microscopic gold usually accounts for an insignificant portion. In gold ores containing carbonaceous material, the preg-robbing nature of carbonaceous material may impose challenges on gold extraction and cause gold losses. To extract gold from refractory sulfide ores, the ore needs to be finely ground and preoxidation is often required. Sulfide host minerals must first be oxidised to create a porous structure through which the cyanide leach solution can penetrate to reach the colloidal gold particles. The oxidation is traditionally achieved by roasting, autoclaving or bacterial oxidation. In carbonaceous sulfide ores exhibiting a preg-robbing nature, the carbonaceous material needs to be treated by roasting, autoclaving or other means to minimise the preg-robbing effect. As a predictive and troubleshooting tool, the gold deportment study plays an important role in gold metallurgy. It determines the deportment of gold in an ore or mill product and identifies the mineralogical issues that may affect or may have affected gold extraction. The information acquired from a gold deportment study can be used to assist in process selection, flow sheet development, recovery improvement and reagent optimisation.CITATION:Zhou, J, 2013. Steel rolling mill product finishing pro cesses gradually become or often already are unsuited for current production and marketing conditions. Indications are made as to what has been done to (i) rectify situations of this kind and, (ii) to reduce both product finishing time and costs. The Mont Reed iron ore deposit, owned by ArcelorMittal, is situated approximately 140 km southwest of the Mont-Wright mine in the southern region of the Labrador Trough, Canada. Acquired by Québec Cartier Mining (QCM) in the 1960s, the Mont Reed mining property has remained unexploited due to the complex nature of the ore in the area. However, during the last years ArcelorMittal’s R&D team has been dedicated to developing a process to beneficiate the Mont Reed ore and produce high-quality pellet feed suitable for direct reduction furnaces. Extensive research revealed that achieving a good liberation degree of particles required grinding the material below 75 μm (P80 of 53 μm). To find the most effective technology for this task, a detailed comparison between ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding was conducted. Both grinding technologies underwent detailed testing in bench-scale experiments. The ground products were comprehensively characterised, including size distribution analysis and chemical analysis per size fraction. Additionally, liberation analysis was performed using an automated scanning electron microscope (SEM). To determine the grinding specific energy, a method previously developed at Samarco (Brazil) for fine grinding of iron ores was employed. Furthermore, magnetic separation and flotation tests were conducted on the ground products. After a thorough evaluation of all the results, it was observed that both ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding produced samples with similar physical characteristics. However, the vertical mill demonstrated higher efficiency in grinding the material. To conclude the study, an economic evaluation was conducted for both options considering various factors. Overall, ArcelorMittal’s R&D team’s dedicated efforts have brought them closer to unlocking the potential of the Mont Reed ore deposit and paving the way for its future utilisation to the production of high-quality pellet feed.

The risk from fire remains one of the most serious of underground mine disaster scenarios. The impacts of mine fires on the underground ventilation system and the production of toxic gases have been difficult to model and therefore assessments have relied largely on empirical data, historical precedent and subjective opinions. Underground fire modelling software has had limited availability and been technically challenging and time consuming to use especially for routine mine investigations. There has also been no well-accepted set of assumptions for fire modelling in mines, which has resulted in a lack of confidence in adopting its use more widely. This paper describes modelling of three critical fire scenarios in underground hard rock mines: a fire (LHD) in an underground diesel refuelling facility, a fire in an underground explosives magazine and a fire on an underground ore transport conveyor. Modelling was undertaken using VentsimÆs VentFIREÖ fire simulation module. It describes the basis of design, the key assumptions, the methodology used and provides examples of the outputs, conclusions and recommendations. It reviews the impacts of these fires on egress and entrapment strategies in the mine. Some general principles regarding improvements to ventilation circuit design based on this analysis are also recommended.
