The upper amphibolite-grade mctasediments of thc rinaroo area, North Queensland, form part of a regional aurcole to the large Tinaroo Batholith and are the stratigraphic equivalents of the Hodgkinson Formation of gencrally low metamorphic grade. There is no evidence of any lithological unconformity.The higher grade metasediments have a more complex deformation history than is typical for thc surrounding region and this may bc due to one or a combination of two factors; an additional strain componcnt associated wilh the intrusion of Ihe Tinaroo Batholith, or a more marked finite strain response to the overall regional stress field within hotter. more ductile rocks.Four deformational events can be characterized within Ihc Tinaroo Area. Close to Ihe Tinaroo Batholith D1 and D2, arc so strongly developed that they disrupl the continuily of Ihe original Iithological layering. In the aureole region, D1 is strongly overprinted and its original fabric intensity is obscured, but both D2 and D3 display a mappable decrease in intensity away from the granite margin. These three deformations occurred during Carboniferous or early Permian time. D4 is later and only patchily developed.The broad, moderate pressure metamorphic aureole surrounding the Tinaroo Batholith is a typical of the CairnsCooktown group of Permo-Carboniferous granitoids. which usually develop narrow, lower pressure contact aureoles. Two periods of metamorphism are distinguishable. The first reached peak temperatures somewhat greater than 520°C, the second temperatures around 620-630° C immediately adjacent to the granite contact.Several cale-silicate lenses containing scattered scheelite mineralization occur within the area. Scheelite appears to have crystallized at the same time as the cale-silicate minerals, its appearance coinciding with the intrusion of the Tinaroo Batholith. Unlike many "skarn-type" scheelite deposits, the scheelite-bearing cale-silicates are Fe-poor, with no positive correlation between total Fe and W.

Copper, zinc, lead, and silver in the discordant magmatic-hydrothermal orebody of the Conrad Mine, N.S.W., all have a relatively high mean abundance. Any single concordant sulphide orebody containing the same metals has a similar order of mean abundance of only one or two of these, particularly copper, copper and zinc, or zinc and lead.The relative abundances of the metals in the Conrad orebody vary more widely than in concordant orebodies, and the lead-zinc-silver and copper-zinc-lead relationships are significantly different.INTRODUCTIONIn previous investigations of metal abundances in sulphide ores, the basis of selection of the orebodies was their form, and to some extent their geological setting, rather than hypotheses concerning their origin. In all cases they were generally concordant with the bedding of the sedimentary or meta-sedimentary rocks enclosing them, and most occurred in volcanic-sedimentary sequences. Their mineralogies were simple, and they were copper, copper-zinc, zinc or lead-zinc rich in composition. Most were of the type ascribed by several authors to exhalative-sedimentary processes.In one of these investigations (Stanton, 1958), it was pointed out that since the metals in ores of this type showed similar abundance patterns and behaviour, it would clearly be of interest to examine, and to compare with them, orthomagmatic and vein types, unquestionably derived from their igneous rock associates.The present investigation is concerned with a single orebody, of clearly discordant type, and of indisputable hydrothermal origin. The abundance and behaviour of copper, zinc, lead, and silver have been determined and compared to similar data fOl!' the concordant type. Such a comparison tests the possibility that metal abundance patterns of base metal ores may be indicative of the mode of ore deposition.

The published liquidus data on the Pb-PbS system have been correlated on the basis of one-coefficient Margules equations. Thermodynamic properties of the components of this system have been obtained, and it has also been found that the calculated miscibility gap of this system exists over a very narrow range of temperature (1041 to 1058°C).

The Dugald River zinc-lead deposit is located 60 km northwest of Cloncurry. It was discovered prior to 1881, and since 1937, has been the subject of several drilling programmcs which have outlined a resource potential of 60 million tonnes grading 10 per cent zinc, 1 per cent lead, and 30 g/t silver.The deposit is a classical example of stratiform zinc lead mineralization in a black shale host. It occurs within a restricted clastic sedimentary basin within the Corella Formation of Carpentarian (Middle Proterozoic) age. Sabkha, lacustrine and fluvial sedimentary environments have been recognized within this basin. Each environment is characterized by suites of evaporite mineral pseudomorphs, after both shortite and gypsum, indicating that both alkaline and hypersaline environments prevailed at different times during basin evolution. The Dugald Slates which host the zinc-·lead mineralization are lacustrine in origin. Thin Mount Isa-type K-rich tuffite beds occur in the Dugald Slates and in the sabkha sequences.The basin as a whole appears not 10 have been marine, and 10 have had strong tectonic controls on its depositional history.The mineral deposit itself is conformable within the Dugald Slates and many primary sedimentary and soft-sediment deformation structures are preserved. It has a strike length of 2 km, average width of 10 m, and a westerly dip of 50-80 . Drilling suggests continuity to 1000 m vertical depth. The predominant sulphides are pyrrhotite, pyrite, sphalerite and galena in graphitic slate and quartz-carbonate ganguc. Anomalous concentrations of barium, manganese, cadmium, mercury and antimony are present in the ore.The deposit crops out over a distance of 2 km as a gossan ranging from 5-15 m in width. There is a striking vegetation anomaly over the gossanous outcrops. The gossan is enriched in lead, silver, antimony, barium, titaniulll, silica and iron, with respect to the primary mineralization. The depth of total oxidation reaches about 20 m.Cieochemical and geophysical test surveys over the deposit give pronounced anomalies.

The Pegmont deposit is a stratiform Pb-Zn sulphide body occurring in a thin, iron-rich metasedimentary unit situated near the top of the Kuridala Formation, a part of the Mary Kathleen Group of the Middle Proterozoic"Eastern Geosyncline" succession of the Mount Isa-Cloncurry district. The deposit appears to have developed in a shallow basin or depression on a sea or lake floor.Detailed chemical and mineralogical study of seven diamond drill cores through the ore horizon shows that in addition to galena and sphalerite the orebody contains a large range of iron-rich silicates and aluminosilicates.Further, five drill cores selected to represent a section from basin centre to basin edge exhibit clear and systematic chemical and mineralogical changes in the ore horizon in both a vertical and, most importantly, ill a lateral sense.Reconstruction of the sedimentary environment of the ore horizon as a whole shows this to be a silicate facies of a phosphatic, manganiferous iron formation or, more accurately, of "ironstone" in the sense of James (1966, U.S. Geol. Surv. Prof. Paper 440, chapter W).On the basis of both mineralogy and chemistry this silicate facies may be subdivided into three microfacies according to the dominant iron silicates characteristic of each: a fayalite microfacies, a hornblende-clinopyroxenemicrofacies, and a garnet microfacies. Significant Pb-Zn sulphide concentrations are confined almost entirely to the fayalite microfacies.

Underground Mine Drainage may be conveniently divided into two operations:(a) Collecting and transporting drainage water to the pump eastern.(b) Elevating water to the surfacc by pumping.This short paper describes a system which automatically performs operation "a" and which has been developed on the South mine at Broken Hill, under the supervision of the mine foreman, Mr. F. McDonell. Background information, formulae and a systematic set of procedures for estimating capital and operating costs for open pit mining equipment are presented in this paper. Firstly, equipment capital costs are required. These can be obtained from either suppliers, contractors or from first principles. The equipment is then divided into cost elements. Typically these are fuel and power requirements, spare parts consumption, wear items such as tyres, teeth and drill bits and finally repair and operating labour requirements. By consideration of the cost and life of each element a base cost can be derived. The base cost is then adjusted to suit specific site conditions such as the proximity to spare parts suppliers, the duty or ground conditions and the management and operator skills specific to the site. Hence, the same item of equipment can be costed to reflect different operations. Included are tables and data for typical plant items. Several examples are also given to illustrate the methodology being presented. The intention is to provide a set of procedures to allow costs to be built up from base level in a systematic and repeatable way. Applications for these costs include feasibility studies, budgetting and data for economic analyses.

The centrifugal elevator invented and patented by the writer is designed for the purpose of conveying the tailings of a gold dredge to such a distance that it shall not impede the dredging opperations. Formerly this was usually accomplished by means of a belt of buckets travelling round a ladder set at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal, but this meant heavy wear and tear on the travelling buckets and the tumblers actuating them. The centrifugal elevator throws the tailings through the air to the required height and distance and it is manifest that during their flight from the elevator to the heap there is absolutely no wear and tear, only the attraction of gravity and the resistance of the air has to be overcome. All then there is left to he considered is how to throw the stuff with the minimun of prower and wear on the elevator.The elevator consists of a cam-shaped steel casting with a disc of mild steel plate on either side: These side plates project a few inches beyond the tips of the beaters, in order to prevent odd stones from straying in an undesired direction; they serve also to prevent extra large stones from reaching the beaters, for they slide off the rims into the water.

The selection of the best comminution circuit for the preparation of concentration feed is a compromise based on economics, energy efficiency, labour costs, steel consumption, availability and other factors specific to each case. It is postulated that the selection must be a choice of one of the eight basic comminution circuits which can be divided into two basic groups, (1) autogenous or semi-autogenous primary mills with or without a secondary grinding stage and (2) fine crushing usually in cone crushers followed by a rod mill-ball mill circuit or a single stage ball mill circuit. The accuracy of selection may be improved by pilot plant and laboratory tests which are described in this paper. For (1) above, testing includes media competency tests with standard impact crushing, grindability and abrasion tests followed by pilot plant tests. For (2) above, bench scale crushability, grindability and abrasion testing is available. It is suggested that, through these tests, it should be possible to eliminate all but one in each group of basic comminution circuits. Then engineering and economic studies should lead to the best comminution circuit for the specific requirement.

A novel, microaerobic, heterotrophic microbial leaching system for manganese dioxide is described. Mixed natural microflora were enriched by addition of sugars and crude plant nutrItIOnal supplements. Between 84 and 104 mg MnH was solubilized per gram sugar at I per cent (w/v) concentrations for fructose and galactose in the presence of 0.03 per cent w/v dried microalgae (a Chlamydomonas species). Some 42 per cent soluble manganese was dissolved by microbial action on MnO, (3 per cent (w/v) pulp density) using a 10 per cent (w/v) molasses growth substrate.

Autogenous (AG) and Semi Autogenous (SAG) grinding mills are the conventional selection for large-scale grinding circuits. It is accepted that these forms of comminution are not the most energy efficient available. This efficiency combined with escalating energy prices, steel prices and the requirement to process larger, lower grade deposits has necessitated that better comminution techniques are found to challenge the dominant position of AG/SAG mills in the grinding circuit. Recent advances in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), particularly in terms of roll surface protection have meant that, depending on the application, an economic alternative is available to the large diameter AG/SAG mills. Mining companies now recognise the potential benefits of HPGR and so they need proper assessment in the design of new or upgrade of existing grinding processes. Of course, the answer to the question AG/SAG or HPGR is not straightforward and the impact of the grinding process on the whole metallurgical process needs to be evaluated. Clearly this is a complex decision to make and requires substantial metallurgical knowledge, test work, and objective analysis. The perceived downstream processing benefits will differ between different plants depending on the ore type and processing conditions. The optimal design of the comminution circuit requires that a robust methodology is followed to objectively characterise the ore, size the equipment and determine the downstream processing benefits. The paper gives a brief comparison of the capital and operating costs for both grinding systems, and then outlines the appropriate test work that is required to make an informed decision.

The Heavy Media Separation plant operated at Lidsdale siding, eight miles from Lithgow, by the N.S.W. Mining Co. is a product of the Western Machinery Company, of D.S.A.This mill, designed to use finely ground magnetite as the heavy medium, was prefabricated in America and shipped to Australia for erection.First operated early in December, 1951 it has worked on a two-shift basis since. Designed for an input rate of 330 tons per hour, this mill is capable of washing 4 in. x /u in. coal down to its inherent ash by removing all heavy material, including high-ash coal.The principle is quite simple. A stream of raw coal is fed into the separatory vessel which contains a liquid medium, the density of which is adjusted to produce the desired split between coal and refuse. In this bath the lightest coal floats, and all material heavier than the specific gravity of the medium sinks, and is removed separately. Such a system is,. ideally suited to Western coal, as there is no definite splitting point between coal and refuse. Inherent ash of the coal fed to the plant ranges from 8 to 25%, the corresponding density range being from 1.28 up to 1.8.Generally speaking, the higher the density the higher the ash content of the coal.The density in the separatory vessel (hereafter called the cone) can be quickly and easily adjusted throughout the above range to any desired value. The term geochemistry - chcmbtry' of the earth - is almost limitless in its implied subject, but of recent years a major trend of research in this field has been towards economic application in the search for mineral deposits, and in particular for those of some ofthe less common elements for which a demand now exists.Geochemistry is in a state of slow transition from a purely descriptive subject to a fundamental science concerned with the relationships that exist between the distribution of the elements in the earth's crust and the physical characteristics of the atoms of those elements. The progress achieved promises a set of basic principles which will relate the atomic characteristics of an element to the physico-chemical conditions that make for its dispersion or concentration. This means that, given a geological map of an areasufficiently detailed for the physico-chemical conditions existing in past geological eras to be deduced, there is the possibility that the relative distribution throughout that area of any element present, and its likely mode of occurrence, could be predicted from a consideration of its atomic characteristics.Since the atomic characteristics of the elements are becoming increasingly well defined by physical research, the attainment of this ideal of prediction depends upon:(a) the strengthening of geochemical theory; and(b) the development of petrological and mineralogical methods of assessing the conditions of temperature and pressure prevailing in geological formations at various stages in their history.The other prime requirement is a d.etailed geological map - a requirement that is all too often lacking.The fact that there has been very little "geochemical approach" to problems of economic geology in Australia should not be taken to mean that there is little point in trying to develop such an approach here in as active and as rigidly scientific a manner as possible. The degree of success that has attended the attempts so far made, to which reference is made below, suggests the reverse, particularly in view of the relatively slight cost involved if the investigations were properly organised on a centralised basis. There are three aspects of geochemistry that are directly applicable to the search for economic minerals.(a) The classic technique of the prospector can be made more sensitive and reliable by the use of modern equipment coupled with the application of geochemical theory to geological and structural data. The case of the rare alkali elements (see below) is givenhere as an illustration of the way in which the distribution of elements can be predicted from the first principles of geochemistry, thereby replacing the prospector's dependence on his "sixth sense" that enabled him to suggest that a certain area of formation was"favourable" for the occurrence of a certain type of mineral deposit.At its best, this sixth sense amounted to an almost subconscious correlation of all relevant associations and typical occurrences of the particular mineral experienced by the prospector during his...

Some design and feasibility studies have been made into possible methods of economic recovery of sulphur from smelter gases emitted at Western Mining Corporation's Nickel smelter at KalgoorIie in Western Australia. The smelter discharges some 330 000 tonne/yr of sulphur dioxide in a stream of approximately 6 per cent by volume of S02.Three possible recovery methods have been considered:1. The manufacture of sulphuric acid using the contact process.2. The concentration of sulphur dioxide to a pure form using dimethyl aniline as an absorbing medium.3. The reduction to elemental sulphur using natural gas as the reducing agent.Design studies were carried out by final year chemical engineering undergraduate students at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1981 under the supervision of the author and other teaching staff of the chemical engineering department. These studies indicate that sulphuric acid manufacture is the economically preferred recovery route.Markets for sulphuric acid include several potential mineral processing applications and the established fertiliser industry.Sulphuric acid is currently manufactured in a number of plants located at coastal regions of Western Australia using imported sulphur. The sulphuric acid is then used for superphosphate or titanium dioxide pigment manufacture at adjacent plants.The possibility is considered of manufacturing superphosphate at Kalgoorlie from locally produced acid obtained from the smelter gases and from phosphate rock railed to the site from the coast. The advantages of such a scheme include improved scale and technology of operation compared with some existing coastal operations, use of a waste material to replace imported sulphur, and avoidance of costs and hazards associated with railing large quantities of sulphuric acid.

Detailed pit and outcrop mapping of sedimentary rocks and their alteration is providing insights into fluvial processes that operated during deposition of the world-class Yandi channel iron deposit. Five prominent rock units are traceable along the strike of the Yandi deposit and permit correlation of open pits and mesas. These units are the Eastern Clay Horizon (ECH), granule-pebble conglomerate (GPC), Main Ore Zone (MOZ), Basal Denatured Zone (BDZ), and Basal Conglomerate (BCONG). The upper part of the deposit is characterised by a transition from spheroidal grains with well-defined rims and nuclei to larger, subangular grains with poorly developed rims. The distribution of rock types and sedimentary features such as lateral accretion surfaces, channel scours and fills, graded bedding, cross-bedding, reworked horizons, and slumped strata are common at Yandi and indicate deposition in a fluvial system. Bedding is well preserved despite modification of original grain shapes and textures and introduction of secondary silica and alumina in the upper part of the deposit. The high lithic and clay content of the GPC and ECH possibly reflect changes in source area or a hiatus in deposition of the Marillana Pisolite. The MOZ and the BDZ may be the same depositional unit with the latter recording alteration by groundwater and destruction of primary textures and other sedimentary features. The BCONG is a channel lag deposit reworked during deposition of the MOZ. This interpretation is supported by the dominance of basement-derived lithic clasts, the presence of BCONG clasts, the variable thickness of the unit along strike and the presence of BCONG clasts in the BDZ.

In presenting this address I am conscious of the honour that has been paid me in my election to this important office, and I am very aware that I follow, in the position of President, many distinguished men who have led the Institute over the 70 years since its inauguration in Broken Hill in 1893.It is perhaps appropriate tonight that I intend to talk about a metal which recalls the birth-place of the Institute, and is also one with which I have had a direct association throughout the whole of my working career. This metal is Silver.Silver is associated traditionally in everyone's mind with money and silverware, and has always been prized for its natural beauty and elegance. It is today one of the few metals in which world consumption has outstripped production, and the events which have occurred to bring about this situation make an interesting story.In telling this story, I propose firstly to indicate our development as a silver producing country, give an historical review of the metal, trace its use as currency and the factors influencing its price, and then say something of the old and new uses of silver. Finally I shall give some comments on silver production in Australia today.Australia, with 6-5 per cent of the world's output of silver, ranks sixth among the producer countries and over the years has contributed 892.5 million ounces to the world's supply which, based upon production since the discovery ofAmerica, is estimated to have been 22,150 million ounces or nearly 680,000 tons.Although our production appears relatively small by...

In considering the preparation of any paper concerning bearing metals, one feels a certain amount of diffidence in venturing into a field which has been capably explored at great length and in great detail during recent years. Many excellent articles have appeared in technical literature, dealing with the general theory of bearings and of bearing metals, the properties of white metals of the tin-base and lead-base types, and of the recently developed lead-bronzes.The justification for this further excursion into the field lies in the fact that it treats a branch of the bearing metal family which has so far received very little attention, and that of a somewhat sketchy nature, in published papers.The author's object is to give some outline of the history, development, present status and possibilities of the cadmium-base bearing metal alloys, particularly those in which copper is the main alloying element.GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS.It is desirable that attention should first of all be given to the general theory, constitution, and necessary attributes of bearing metals, in order that some of the problems met with during the development work may be better appreciated.Despite some evidence to the contrary, it is fairly generally maintained that an alloy for bearing metal use should be of a heterogeneous nature. It should consist of particles of a hard constituent uniformly distributed through a softer matrix.The basic idea is that the hard constituent should actually bear the load and resist wear, while the matrix imparts the necessary ductility and allows the bearing to align itself on the shaft in service.

The development of the carbonization of brown coal briquettes to produce a hard char suitable for use in place of imported hard coke has continued in Victoria, and an experimental carbonization plant has recently been commissioned at Morwell by the Gas and Fuel Corpora.tion to assess the prospects for the commercial production and marketing of hard char in Victoria. The char offers advantages in its very low ash content and its uniform lump size, while the indications are that it could be marketed at a price competitive with that of imported hard coke. The hard char is unique amongst metallurgical fuels in combining a high reactivity with high physical strength, and research by the University of Melbourne into its utilization in foundry cupolas for melting iron has shown how modifications could be made to take advantage of these properties. An 18 inch experimental cupola has been built to test in practice the predictions made from this fundamental research.INTRODUCTIONSteady development has continued in Victoria from the promising laboratory researches at the University of Melbourne which were reported to the 1955 Annual Conference of The Institute (Worner, 1956). This work had shown that a hard lump char could be produced by the high temperature carbonization of standard industrial briquettes by careful control of the heating conditions, and that the special briquetting techniques adopted in Germany were unnecessary with Yallourn brown coal. Continuation of this research has led to the refinement of carbonization techniques and has increased the strength of the char until it has equalled that of conventional metallurgical cokes.

Increasing demand for copper, lead and zinc with continuous depletion of good grade ore reserves, warrants the need for utilization of lean and complex ores of these metals. There is worldwide effort to develop suitable processes for these purposes. The present paper deals with the chloride leaching of complex base metal sulphide concentrates of two Indian deposits. A two stage leaching process is suggested keeping selectivity of metal dissolution in view.In the first stage most of the lead and zinc are reacted with dilute FeCI3 (0.3M) solutions at a temperature ono°c where major portion of the lead remains in the residue and zinc reports in solution. After taking out lead chloride by brine leaching, the residue has been treated for copper dissolution. A concentrated FeCI3 leaching at boiling temperature as well as ambient aqueous chlorine leaching have been separately tried to dissolve out the copper from the residue. Based on the results obtained, a flowsheet for the proposed process is presented.
