Hot-dipped heat-treated zinc coatings on sheet steel were examined with X-rays. The phases identified were compared with those listed in the modern literature 01 the zinc-iron system. The zeta (FeZn13) phase is shown to correspond to the phase found by Schueler (1925) in heat-treated zinc coatings. An investigation was undertaken to determine the phases present in hot-dipped heat-treated zinc coatings on steel sheets and wire. This kind of coating on wire was studied some years ago by Schuelerl by microscopic and chemical methods. He reported a new phase, FeZn10. Later, Clark and Stillwell,2 using X-ray crystal analysis, identified a new phase in ordinary galva. nized wire, which was assumed to be the FeZn10 phase. Since the extensive review of the iron-zinc alloys presented a few years ago,3 much new work has been published, some of which5-l6 was too late to be included in the recent edition (1939) of the American Society for Metals' Handbook.4 Figs. 1 and 2 are reproductions of the latest iron-zinc diagram proposed by Schramml1 as a result of his investigations by microscopic, thermal, magnetic susceptibility and X-ray methods. Table 1 summarizes all the known published X-ray data of the phases Present. The solubility of iron in zinc has been determined by x-ray methods.10 In the same manner the homogeneity range of the P phase was studiedlo using the principle that the parameter of an intermetallic compound changes while the concentration of One of the constituents changes. Schramm10 has found some 80 alpha lines in X-ray powder photograms of phase d1, and from these he believes that this phase is related to the P phase. Previous investi-

A REVIEW of the progress in applied geophysics during the recent depression years reveals marked advances "over the methods employed several years ago. Of late, geophysical work has been curtailed to a con-siderable extent in the fields of oil and base-metal exploration, its especial domains a few years ago. Greater attention has been directed toward the use of geophysical technique in other engineering problems. Constantly maintained research programs have developed new instruments and per-fected better field, laboratory and interpretation techniques based on experience and skill acquired from years of application in the older geophysical field. During the past two years, geophysical methods have been employed in problems that required information on thickness of fill materials and subsurface bedrock contours. Considerable success has been attained, with subsequent drilling checking the predicted depths within one to five per cent. In general, these problems were similar as far as the fundamen-tal physical and geological conditions were concerned, but they have varied widely in specific detail and in engineering aspects. Character-istic of the different problems are: (1) yardage and bedrock profile in gold-placer mining; (2) water supply, involving underground drainage and storage conditions; (3) bedrock contours in dam-site and other structural investigations; (4) gravel and fill yardage, and other structural features along rights of way and in rock and gravel quarrying. Of particular interest, perhaps, to mining men are the problems of gold placer deposits and water supply. Geophysical work on gold placers is of especial interest because of the present expanded activity in all phases of gold mining. The development of a suitable water supply at, an economical cost is often of prime importance in insuring a successful mining venture. Particularly is this true in the arid Southwest. How-ever, the use of geophysical work in water supply is not confined to the needs of mining development.

The authors have done a commendable job in combining a number of recognized waterflood performance prediction methods into one composite method. The availability of a FORTRAN program for this composite method should encourage its widespread industry use. Pan American has had a computer program developed along similar lines for a number of years,' and it has received more use than any other reservoir prediction method. In three important stages of a pattern waterflood, the authors fail to consider fully the effects of water-oil mobility ratio on performance. This is discussed in the following paragraphs and modifications of the prediction method are suggested. During the early stages of a waterflood in a partially depleted formation, the injected water and its preceding oil bank move out radially from the injection wells. As pointed out in the author's paper the method of Yuster and Calhoun2 or predicting the water injection rate during this period assumes that the mobilities of the water and oil are equal. In his book, Muskat3 resents a modification of the Yuster-Calhoun approach that considers fully the influence of water-oil mobility ratio. In Muskat's method, the prediction of the injection rate-injected volume-time relationship is expressed in readily programmed dimension-less unts. At and following fillup the five-spot pattern consists of a water-invaded pattern with the remainder of the pattern containing only oil and connate water. In the paper, Eq. 18 is used to calculate the water injection rate at fillup. This equation considers that the entire pattern is invaded by water. To properly consider both the incomplete areal sweep of water and the water-oil mobility ratio, Eq. 18 should read:

IT is my purpose to give some of the results obtained by an experience of nearly seven years in working ores by the method frequently called the Washoe Process, and in several mills of which I have had charge, but principally in the Owyhee Mill, at Silver City, Idaho, which had twenty '650-pound stamps, and sixteen pans. I shall discuss here merely the mechanical details for working ores generally, subdividing the subject as follows: 1. Preparation of the ore for the stamps; 2. The crushing in the battery; 3. The settling of sand or pulp in vats or tanks; 4. The treatment in the pans; 5. The results obtained in settlers, agitators, and concentrators ; 6. The straining of quicksilver, cleaning of amalgam, and retorting; 7. The saving of slimes and their subsequent treatment; 8. The loss of quicksilver. For descriptions of the various kinds of orebreakers, stamps, tanks, pans, settlers, etc., I must refer to the various works on these subjects, prominent among which are the reports of the United States Commissioner of Mining Statistics, and the volume on "Mining Industry," the third volume of the United States Geological Survey on the Line of the Fortieth Parallel through the gold and silver bearing regions of the great West, undertaken under the able guidance of Clarence King, assisted by Mr. James D. Hague and others. In this discussion it will be assumed that the general arrangement of the quartz mill is understood; and the question will be treated how to secure, from such a mill, the greatest economy in working, combined with the largest results. This place seems fittest for a single preliminary suggestion-namely, that there should be double "floors" throughout the mill, so that nothing can sift through and be lost.

The Eagle mine is situated in the Kerber Creek mining district, Bonanza, Saguache County, Colo. The climate and topography of this district arc similar to those of mining camps of the Rocky Mountain region that lie 9000 to 12,000 ft. above sea level. The district is at the northeasterly edge of the San Juan volcanic region, in which successive Tertiary lavas have built up a high plateau resting upon earlier sedimentary formations, or the underlying pre-Cambrian complex. The latter was exposed in places by erosion previous to the eruptions. In the Bonanza district, proper, only volcanic formations, andesites and latites, are found. Dr. H. B. Patton,1 in his survey of the district, discriminates between several varieties of lavas and maps these as distinct flows. They are local variations within the same lava and it is impossible to determine any distinct line of demarkation between them. Structurally they are members of the same flow. There are three general types of vein occurrences: 1. Lead-zinc-copper-silver-gold veins in well-defined fissures with a quartz gangue; ill these, the various sulfides show a zonal arrangement. 2. Massive gray copper ores high in silver, in irregular fractures in the form of small lenses and pockets, in which little or no quartz is found. 3. Manganiferous quartz veins very low in silver and gold at the surface which, with depth, become important silver veins containing subordinate amounts of gold. These veins have a quartz gangue with an abundance of Phodochrosite. The silver is associated with small amounts of sphalerite, galena, and pyrite; fluorite also is present. The Eagle is the only mine that has been developed in the manganiferous quartz type of vein. The deformation characteristics of pearlite have been studied by light and electron microscopy.1,2 In the electron-microscopic work, deformation was found to take place by 1) ferrite slip which is parallel to the lamellae, 2) slip transverse to the lamellae with both cementite and ferrite deforming, and 3) ferrite-cementite interfacial slip. The transverse slip gives a step-like appearance to the lamellae in light microscopic work. It was thought that spheroidization of deformed pearlite would commence at the regions of maximum cementite deformation, the "stepped" areas. Although there is no possibility for seeing slip in the microstructure if the specimen is polished after deformation, the step-like appearance of the lamellae clearly indicates the transverse deformation. Thus, the areas of cementite deformation are apparent after polishing and the effect of deformed areas on spheroidization may be studied by the usual metallographic techniques. This note reports the result of a metallographic investigation which substantiates that spheroidization begins in the "stepped" areas. An AISI 1080 steel was normalized, re-austeni-tized at 1040°C, and isothermally transformed at 700 ± 4°C for 4 hr. Cubes, 5 mm to a side, were compressed between parallel plates to strains of 20, 40, and 50 pct. After deformation, specimens were heated to 600, 650, and 700°C; withdrawn at increasing time intervals and examined metallo-graphically for the percentage and distribution of spheroidite. The percentage of spheroidite was determined by lineal analysis. A micro structural region considered as spheroidized was one in which a lamellar skeleton was not distinguishable. Table I gives the times necessary for 95 pct spheroidization for each condition of strain and annealing temperature. Revision of the United States mining law is needed chiefly because of the following reasons: 1. The conceptions as to the characteristics of orebodies that were held at the time the statute of 1872 was enacted have since proved to be in many respects erroneous. 2. The operation of the existing law has been found to work unnecessary hardship upon many claimants to mineral land. 3. The existing statute fails in large degree to encourage development of mineral resources. 4. The existing law often produces conflict between placer and lode-claim rights, working unnecessary injustice to placer claimants. 5. The methods of establishing the rights of locators on United States mineral land are defective, and are not uniform throughout the States within which such lands exist. Law of the Apex The objections to the so-called "law of the apex" are so well known as to require no detailed statement. It is sufficient to point out that the apex rule was based upon the notion that ore deposits consisted of well-formed veins included between definite walls, like the slice of ham in a sandwich. The fact is that veins conforming to that simple type are rare. Irregularity is the rule, and the chief metal production of the United States comes from mass? which bear no resemblance to the tabular form of vein. Manifestly the law of the apex fails completely in such cases. Moreover, the tendency is constantly toward the exploitation of ores of lower grade than could formerly be worked, and such deposits exist mainly in the form of large irregular impregnated zones and masses, so that the future development of our mineral resources would be continuously embarrassed by shadowy claims to extra-lateral rights by the locators of so-called apexes.

The susceptibility of titanium to stress orientation of hydride precipitates was investigated. It was determined that, when hydride precipitation occurred in titanium under an applied tensile stress of 30,000 psi, the hydrides precipitated on the titanium habit plane oriented most nearly perpendicular to the stress axis. Stress orientation of the hydride platelets occurred because the precipitation of the lower density hydride phase perpendicular to the stress axis caused expansion of the matrix in a direction that tended to relieve the applied stress. The Ti-H system has received considerable study in recent years, mainly because of concern over the effects of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of titanium. The amount of hydrogen present in commercial titanium is now quite low and should have no appreciable effect on its mechanical properties; however, many titanium applications require ex- posure to hydrogenous atmospheres under conditions in which hydrogen pickup is likely. In such cases continued exposures may cause the hydrogen content to increase to the extent that titanium hydride does precipitate as a second phase. The hydride phase has been shown 1,2 to have an adverse effect on the mechanical properties, particularly the impact properties, causing reductions in strength and ductility. BACKGROUND The behavior of titanium is often quite similar to that of zirconium and zirconium-base alloys, and the technology developed on one metal can often be applied to the other. Marshall and Louthan3,4 have shown that Zircaloy is susceptible to stress orientation* of zirconium hydride platelets, and that the platelet orientation has a pronounced effect on the mechanical properties of Zircaloy. They showed that when zirconium hydride precipitated in Zircaloy under an applied stress the hydride platelets tended to be aligned parallel to a compressive stress and perpendicular to a tensile stress. It is well known, in metallurgical circles, though less recognized in the technical press, that there have been remarkable increases in the capacity of the blast furnace in the last five .years. In places this capacity has been almost doubled. This paper will brief the experimental work carried on during more than five years with the direct assistance of the technical staffs of three lead smelters treating three distinctive types of feed. The first is the custom smelter of the International Smelting and Refining Co. at Tooele, Utah1, with a multiplicity of ores; the second, the Kellogg, Idaho, smelter of the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating CO.2, treating an exceedingly rich lead charge, such as is now being made more and more as the practice of concentration is improved; and the third, the smelter at Trail, B. C., owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited3, which treats highly zinciferous charges and later recovers zinc from the slag. In comparing operations at these three smelters it must be clearly recognized that the objectives in smelting differ through differences in economics. Many operations are not, then, strictly comparable. There have also been decided improvements in operation since all of the smelters were examined, though this was but a relatively short time ago. The general factors that govern speed in smelting and the loss of metals in the smelters examined will be stressed. (For details of operation the reader is referred to the original papers.) This paper will then be an examination of the fundamentals of operating units in a search for improvements, and not a description of three great lead smelters. The study of copper alloys of the age-hardening type has received considerable attention, and, among the alloys which the authors have, considered, those containing small amounts of nickel and phosphorus as essential constituents seem especially interesting. Such alloys have attractively great capacity for being hardened and also have relatively high electrical and thermal conductivity in the hardened state. In addition, it has been found that the increase in hardness and strength imparted by aging can be greatly augmented by cold-working, so that excellent combinations of conductivity and strength are obtainnble. In view of the possible importance of the alloys, it was considered desirable to investigate the solubility relationships in the copper-rich portion of the copper-nickel-phosphorus system. This paper present's some of the results obtained in this investigation to date and also gives propertics of typical alloys that appear to be of commercial interest,. Review of literature Copper-nickel System,.—The binary coppcr-nickcl system has long been known to consist of a series of simple solicl solutions, copper and nickel being miscible at all tempcrat'ures and concentrations. This was establisl~cd by Guertler arid Tammannl in 1907 and confirmed by Tafel2 in 1908. Copper-phosphorus System.—The copper phosporus system has been studied by numerous investigators, so that the copper-rich portion is now definitely known. As most recently determined by Lindlief," his system has a cutectic at 8.38 per ccnt P, cuteetic temperature being 714° C. Components of the cutectic are Cu3P and alpha solid solution. Solid solubility of phosphorus in copper, according to Mertz arid Mathewson decreases from a maximum of about 1.75 per cent at 714' C. to about 0.6 per cent at 300' C.

Experiments have shown that the use of enriched air would be of particular benefit in the roasting of zinc ores for the manufacture of sulfuric acid. Enriched air increases capacity of furnace, decreases fuel consumption, and increases SO2 content of roaster gas. THE work here described had for its purpose the procuring of data from which some quantitative estimate might be made of the results obtainable by using oxygen-enriched air in roasting zinc ores on a commercial scale. The principal metallurgical advantages of using enriched air in roasting zinc ores would be: 1. The rate of roasting would be increased, with consequent gain in the capacity of the roasting furnace. 2. As less air would be required for roasting, the volume of hot gases leaving the furnace and the heat carried out of the furnace as sensible heat in these gases would be less per ton of ore roasted; partly for this reason and partly because of the increased quantity of heat generated in the furnace by the larger amount of ore that could be roasted, the consumption of fuel by the furnace would be lessened; and by the use of air sufficiently enriched with oxygen the necessity of using fuel might be entirely obviated. 3. Roaster gas having a higher SO2 content could be produced; this would make possible greater capacity and more economical operation of the sulfuric-acid plant. Certain phases of the application of enriched air to roasting can be worked out only by experimenting with a furnace of commercial, or at least semicommercial, size. THE study of the flow of oil and gas mixtures through oil-bearing formations has received special attention from the petroleum industry within the past few years, and has resulted in a series of research projects based upon various phases of the flow of heterogeneous fluids through porous media. Obviously, the low cost of producing oil during the flowing life of a well makes it desirable to obtain production by natural flow as long as possible and to effect a maximum recovery of oil and gas by the utilization of reservoir energy through efficient methods based upon a thorough knowledge of reservoir characteristics. Despite the extensive research that has been carried out, there is little information available on the behavior of oil and gas mixtures flowing through reservoir formations. This makes it impossible to predetermine the optimum operating condi-tions for flowing wells. A differential pressure must exist in the reservoir in order to induce flow toward the well. It is a well established fact that with homogeneous fluids the relation of pressure drop to linear distance traveled is a straight-line function as long as the flow is viscous. However, in regard to gas-saturated oils, a number of investigators1,3,4 have reported that the flow characteristics are materially altered as some of the lighter hydrocarbons are liberated from the oil to form gas while the fluid passes through the reservoir. Most of the work done has been concerned primarily with steady-state flow of liquid-gas mixtures. Cloud1 has studied the effects of saturating crude petroleum oils with various gases, together with the resultant pressure gradients under steady flow conditions, noting that unsaturated oils flowed faster and yet maintained lower pressure gradients than saturated oils.

The spheroidal form of the temper carbon nodules in malleable cast iron and of the graphite mottles of "mottled" cast iron suggests that in both all the graphite in a given mottle or nodule grew from a single center of crystallization or nucleus. $ There is, however, a distinct metallo-graphic difference between the mottle and the nodule; the area of mother metal impoverished in combined carbon by the crystallization of graphite in a mottle is practically coextensive with the ramifications of the graphite, while the impoverished zone of metal corresponding to a given nodule is always larger, and usually much larger, than the approximately spherical mass of graphite crystals forming the nodules. Furthermore, the mottle probably is formed during freezing and the nodule almost always at a considerably lower temperature. Assuming that the nodules or mottles can be used as a measure of the existing nuclei (capable of germination) we propose to record certain observations as to the graphitizing reaction in the light of the number and habits of growth of these nuclei. The present authors, in cooperation with others'-', have reported upon various cognate aspects of the problem. The fact that temper carbon is a mass of flakes and not a solid granule has become well recognized since the introduction of an improved polishing technique8, 9, 10 for cast iron. The problem of deriving from the circular planar intercepts of a mass of spheres of varying sizes their number and size distribution in space has also been satisfactorily solved12, 13 Growth of Nuclei in White Cast Iron It has already been shown1, 3 that the progress of graphitization with time is usual1y consistent with the assumption that nodules grow in size

SINCE my communication to the Institute at the Baltimore meeting in 1879,* in which I took the lead in emphasizing the importance of a new method in the manufacture of soda, already practiced to some extent in England and on the Continent of Europe, five years have passed. I.then referred particularly to the advantages offered in the United States for this peculiar method, by the ammonia process, namely: 1. At the present time, at least, we have but one mine in this country where rock-salt is mined, namely, at New Iberia, La. On the other hand, we have many localities where brine of various degrees of strength, up to that of cold saturation, is obtained in large quantities. 2. We have excellent fuel, in close proximity to most of the brinecenters. 3. Our supplies of pyrites, to use in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, for use in the manufacture of soda by the Leblanc process, are mostly too far from the brine-centers to permit competition in that line with the more favorable conditions existing in England. 4. Unlike our foreign rivals, we have no large and costly plants, erected on the Leblanc plan, which must be abandoned and exchanged for new but cheaper plants, before the ammonia-soda process can be adopted. 5. We have a constantly increasing demand for soda, which is almost entirely supplied by importation. If slow progress has been made hitherto in this country in the extension of this manufacture (only one plant at Syracuse, erected . under the Solvay patent, having as yet been placed in operation), I still feel gratified in saying that developments in England, and particularly on the Continent of Europe, give ample proof of the

The solubility limit and the diffusivity of carbon in molybdenum have been obtained by duffising carbon into molybdenum rods from a Mo + Mo2C powder mixture. The solubility limit was taken as the long-time asymptotic limit of the rod composition. The diffusiv-ity was obtained from fractionally saturated rods from the rate of change of the average composition. Compositions were determined by chemical analysis. The solubility limit obtained is: WhILE the Mo-C system is important in refractory alloy technology neither the solubility limit nor the diffusivity of carbon in molybdenum is unambiguously known. In Fig. 1 the Mo-C phase diagram is presented. The heavy lines, the terminal solution solubility limit, and the eutectic temperature are results of the present investigation and will be discussed in detail later. However, it is readily seen that the previously published solubility limit determinations, Few and Manning1 and Fromm and ROy2 differ by up to an order of magnitude. The general form of Fig. 1, the Mo2C field, and a eu- tectic temperature -2200°C are due to an early Investigation by Sykes et a1.3 Although they did not determine the solubility limit, they did establish that the maximum at the eutectic temperature was about 1000 ppm. The only other prior data found on the solubility limit is from a lattice-parameter study by Speiser et a1 .,4 from which it can be concluded that the maximum solubility is greater than 1800 ppm. There does not appear to be any data oh the diffusivity of carbon in molybdenum. However, Samsonov and Epik5 have determined, from the rate of growth of an MozC layer, the diffusivity of carbon in Mo2C, and this has been erroneously interpreted, for example by ~c~eil,' as applicable to diffusion of carbon in molybdenum.

The present paper is a continuation of the work on the relationship between the magnetic and the phase transformations in carbon steels during quenching. An account was given by the author in a previous paperl† of an investigation of this relationship during a continuous quench. The experimental difficulties then encountered prevented a conclusive proof of the existence or absence of such a relationship. The conclusions of the previous paper were derived indirectly. The present paper deals with the same problem, but the method of attack is modified. The technique developed by Davenport and Bain2 in their well-known study of austenite transformation at subcritical temperature was adopted in the present investigation. They have shown that the austenite to martensite transformation can be caused to proceed at a relatively slow rate by quenching steels into a hot metal bath. Slowing down of the rate of transformation, together with an observation by Lewis3 that a eutectoid steel can be preserved in the nonmagnetic state by such quenching, pointed out a possibility of a study of both transformations under more favorable conditions than previously described. The preliminary steps were connected with the technique of the hot bath quench. To study this phase of the present work a modification of the apparatus previously described' was used. The modification consisted in the use of a hot quenching bath instead of brine, and in fixing the secondary and the primary coils of the apparatus in a stationary position in and around the bath. Tubular specimens, as in the previous investigation, were heated in a suitable furnace to a temperature in the austenitic range for the given steel and then were dropped into the quenching apparatus. The quenching bath was heated to a series of temperatures within the probable range at which the austenite to martensite transformation was expected to proceed at the slowest rate. Observations
