Tar sand deposits in the state of Utah contain more than 25 billion bbl of in-place bitumen. Although 30 times smaller than the well-known Athabasca tar sands, Utah tar sands do represent a significant domestic energy resource comparable to the national crude oil reserves (31.3 billion bbl). Based upon a detailed analysis of the physical and chemical properties of both the bitumen and the sand, a hot-water separation process for Utah tar sands is currently being developed in our laboratories at the University of Utah. This process involves intense agitation of the tar sand in a hot caustic solution and subsequent separation of the bitumen by a modified froth flotation technique. Experimental results with an Asphalt Ridge, Utah, tar sand sample indicated that percent solids and caustic concentration were the two most important variables controlling the performance of the digestion stage. These variables were identified by means of an experimental factorial design, in which coefficients of separation greater than 0.90 were realized. Although preliminary in nature, the experimental evidence gathered in this investigation seems to indicate that a hot-water separation process for Utah tar sands would allow for the efficient utilization of this important energy resource.

In the above ?o represents the instantaneous strain on loading, ?t the limit of transient creep, ?S the steady-state creep rate, t the time, and ? a constant leading to the exhaustion rate of transient creep. It was noted that this equation was similar in form to that proposed originally2 by McVetty. This type of equation was also suggested by Andrade and Aboav3 in studies of the shear strain of cadmium. Calculation of the constants ?o, ?t, ?, and ?s, in Eq. [ l] is somewhat involved due to the slight complexity of this relationship. In the paper by Garofalo a computer approach based on a least-squares analysis was recommended. Such an approach involves a trial and error solution but when a computer facility is available the difficulties in this calculation are of little consequence. It does mean however that the evaluation of this type of equation would become quite tedious if computer facilities were not available. Some recent studies have identified a fairly straightforward method for calculating the constants in the Garofalo equation. Previous Publications THE first report on the slag viscosity work of the Bureau of Mines was made by one of the authors 1 in 1916. It was concerned chiefly with, the method of measurement. A paper 2 on this phase of the work was presented to the Institute in February, 1917, and a similar paper 3 was communicated to the Faraday Society. Purpose and Scope of the Slag Viscosity Tables Following the development of a suitable method, the next step in the investigation was the measurement of slag viscosity over a wide range of temperature and composition, and the arrangement of this experimental data in the form of tables for the use of the blast-furnace operator. It is believed that this information, if used intelligently, should help the operator to reduce losses in production caused by off-grade pig iron, to improve fuel economy, to promote operating efficiency, and to extend present-day practice to meet the increasing need of smelting lean and complex ores. The industrial importance of bacteriological leaching is finding increasing application in the treatment of low-grade ore and of exhausted mines. Another possible application of bio-leaching is in the extraction of ore concentrates, although here the first uses will likely be for ores that are refractory to conventional metallurgy. Biological leaching studies, which have been in progress for over ten years in this laboratory, are directed towards the more rapid and complete leaching of metals from their sulfides, particularly of copper, zinc, and nickel. The program involves not only laboratory studies, but pilot-plant operations and liaison with mining companies which are underwriting the cost of the investigations. Although the bacterial oxidation of mineral sulfides to the corresponding water-soluble sulfates has been occurring naturally for many centuries, the first documented recovery of solubilized metal from pregnant solution was at the Rio Tinto operation in Spain. At this location leaching variables were studied extensively in an empirical manner some years before the causative bacteria were first isolated from other leaching situations. Documentation of the presence of bacteria in leach waters of the Rio Tinto, Spain, operation was not confirmed until 1962.3 On this continent leaching was pioneered in the early

An experimental study is discussed of the state of strain, deformation and fracture around lined and unlined cylindrical cavities in rock under biaxial compressive static loading. The specimens were limestone plates 36 in. high, 24 in. wide and 3 in. thick with a 4 in. diameter hole unlined or lined with hydrostone and aluminum liners. The ratio of horizontal to vertical applied stress was one-third. Experimental techniques used were strain gages, differential transformers and photoelastic coatings. Strain distributions were plotted along the horizontal axis of symmetry for various levels of applied stress. The agreement with theory was good at low stress levels but appreciable deviations occurred at higher levels and near the hole. The experimental strain concentration factor was nearly the same, slightly higher and appreciably higher than the theoretical value for the hydrostone-lined, unlined and aluminum-lined specimens, respectively. Failure modes were splitting along a vertical plane for the unlined and hydrostone-fined specimens, compressive (shear) failure for one unlined specimen and splitting with radial cracking for the aluminum-lined specimen. The rapid and comparatively recent development of flotation has opened so fascinating a field for study and research that the older processes of gravity concentration no longer receive the attention they deserve. The early work of Munroel and Richards12 and the more recent contributions by Clevenger and Coe,3 Laist and Wiggin,4 Ammon,5 Bardwell,6 Crowfoot,' and Hayden8 (to mention only some which have appeared in our own Transactions) and by Schu1z,9 have furnished so much data that to offer something new seems a difficult task. It is still possible, however, to present known facts from a different point of view, and, with this in mind, the writer has undertaken to express basic principles of gravity concentration in terms of simple mathematics and mechanics; the conclusions thus reached will be found to correspond, in general, with those obtained by experimental methods. Rittinger, in his classic Aufbereitungskunde (1867)) reached analogous conclusions by way of intricate higher mathematics, for which reason his interesting investigations have remained a sealed book to most of us. The writer hopes that a more elementary treatment of the subject, based in part on Rittinger's metheds, may arouse new interest in the study of basic principles.

THIS PAPER DEALS WITH the practices used at the Huntington, Nest Virginia works of The International Nickel Company, Inc., in hot and cold rolling nickel and high-nickel alloys. The practical metallurgical aspects are discussed and a brief description of equipment given. The alloys covered may he divided into three main groups. based on their major constituents: 1. Nickel alloys, 2. Nickel-copper alloys. 3. Nickel-chromium alloys. The nominal compositions of the various alloys which are produced in most common mill forms are given in Table 1. Nickel, a commercially pure grade of nickel containing about 0.05 pct carbon as' the chief alloying element, is produced in all common Mill forms. "L" Nickel is commercially pure nickel in which the carbon content is held as low as possible, usually less than 0.01 pct. This grade of nickel is used chiefly for spinning and for special high temperature applications where its low carbon content enhances its corrosion resistance. "D" Nickel contains 4.5 pct manganese to provide improved resistance to sulphur embrittlement at elevated temperatures. Samples taken at different heights in the lead blast furnace of Brunswick Mining and Smelting corporation were studied to determine the phases present in order to interpret the reactions In the furnace. The main phases in the blast furnace feed are Pb3Ca2S13011, Zn ferrite (ZnFe204), and hardystonite (Ca2ZnSi207); rninor ones include lead and a Pb silicate. The temperature in the furnace varies from about 300°C at 4.2 m above the tuyeres to 1150°C at 1.1 m. There is no evidence of reactions in samples from points cooler than 800°C. Some reaction occurs between 950° and llOO°C and the lead sinter is nearly decomposed at about 1150°C. The first evidence of reaction was the decomposition of Pb silicate to lead and S102. At higher temperatures the Pb Ca2Si3011 decomposed to form lead and hardystonite (Ca2ZnS120rf. The Zn required for hardystonite was derived from the Zn ferrite which apparently re-equilibrated to a new Zn ferrite with less Zn. The decomposed sinter consists essentially of lead, hardystonite, wustite and a Zn ferrite with a low Zn content.

THE advance made in recent times in this branch of metallurgy is indicated y the attention the subject is receiving from important American copper-producing companies. Reference to the files of publications devoted to the mining industry discloses that some 20 American companies are actively investigating the amenability of their ore, or other material, to leaching methods, and that plants of varying capacities up, to 10,000 tons per day are under construction or are projected. Several leaching works are in commercial operation. It has been frequently pointed out that no method of leaching is universally applicable, for the reason that each ore differs in some particular from apparently similar ore found elsewhere, and also because local conditions are rarely the same even where the ore closely approximates in character that being worked at some other point. For this reason the older companies are approaching the matter in a conservative manner, experimentally determining for themselves the salient features in each instance. In considering a leaching proposition three factors at once fix the attention: (1) disengaging the metal from mineralized forms in Which it is found in nature; (2) recovering the metal in a commercial state after it has been dissolved; (3) the apparatus best adapted to carrying out the several operations.

Long experience with underground mining inspired the unusual idea of using an underground crusher-conveyor system as a substitute for surface haulage at the Cananea open-pit copper mine in Sonora, Mexico. Now implemented and working well, the system has born out the expectations of its originator, Cia. Minera de Cananea S.A. de C.V., that it would effect substantial cuts in the high cost of haulage. The Cananea deposit is a large, low-grade orebody above the mined-out Colorada pipe which was once one of the largest high-grade underground deposits in the district. Present facilities at the pit consist of: (1) A large open-pit mine capable of moving 80,000 tons of material per day with a shovel-truck, underground crusher and belt conveyor haulage system. (2) A 25,000-tpd concentrator equipped for four stages of crushing, rod mill-ball mill grinding with cyclone classification, and flotation in conventional machines. (3) A dump leaching process producing 1 million lb of copper per month in a tin-can scrap precipitation plant. (4) A two-reverberatory, six-converter smelter which can make 140 tons of blister copper per day. (5) A well-integrated contingent of supporting departments running the gauntlet from housing to power generation.

THE northern anthracite fields, although facing the same economic problems as the southern fields, are confronted with the additional problem of fast dwindling reserves of anthracite which can be conventionally and economically won. The mining of coal which remains in thin beds and the recovery of pillars from areas heretofore considered unrecoverable, either by reason of cost or surface restriction, pose problems of increasing importance to the economic life of the northern field operations. Successful approaches have been made to this problem and other work is being performed that holds promise. There exists in the northern anthracite field millions of tons of solid coal, the recovery of which has not been too successful due to the following inherent operating faults: inability to concentrate producing areas, the great quantities of rock to be cut and handled, lack of consideration of proper sequence and speed of second mining, and the continued use of the mine car as the basis of payment. A mining system that has successfully solved these major problems has been in operation in the Scranton area since 1944. Over 1% million tons have been produced from veins varying from 3 to 4% ft thick by this method, which is known as the multiple panel-triangular system-conveyor mining.

Recent developments in iron alloys containing nitrogen have indicated that this element may exert a considerable influence on the properties of the metal. This influence is not always in an undesirable direction and the indications are that nitrogen should be regarded as an alloying element, the amount of which should be subject to control, rather than as an inherently deleterious impurity. In controlling this element in liquid iron to the best advantage, it is necessary to have a reliable background of fundamental data pertaining to solubilities, rates of solution and chemical reactions of nitrogen in liquid iron. Obviously, the first step in such an investigation is the determination of the solubility of nitrogen in pure iron, and this has been the object of the experiments described in this paper. The solubility of nitrogen in solid iron has been measured by Jurich,' Sieverts,2 Martin,3 and Iwasé4 and the agreement among the first three inspires confidence in their results. No accurate determinations of its solubility in liquid iron have been recorded though several investigators have obtained approximate results. Strauss6 was able to introduce 0.03 to 0.04 per cent nitrogen into steel by the action of either ammonia or nitrogen on the liquid metal. This was accomplished by Eilender and

The heat treatment of the bronze composed of 88 per cent. copper, 10 per cent. tin, and 2 per cent. zinc, has been investigated by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose,' and also by the U. S. Bureau of Standards.2 The results obtained by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose on dry-sand castings subjected to reheating followed by air cooling, or by quenching in water, are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The values for tensile strength have been converted from tons per square inch to pounds per square inch. Figs. 3 and 4, have been plotted from values obtained by the Bureau of Standards on material of the same composition and treatment. Both investigations show that the ductility of the cast bronze is improved by heating to 700' C. and cooling in air, the strength not being impaired by this treatment. They are not in agreement, howevcr, as to the effect of quenching, Messrs. Primrose reporting a decrease, and the Bureau of Standards an increase, in both strength and ductility when the cast bronze is heated to 600' or 700' C. and quenched. THE following is an abridgment of a recent report made by the author, covering an investigation of (A) The necessary use of natural-gas compressors; (B) The effect of gas compressors on natural-gas field operating conditions in Ohio, with special reference to the working pressure relations of gas wells of one company discharging by natural rock pressure flow without compressors, and adjacent wells of other companies, discharging into intake lines to gas-compressing stations. Tests were made at 107 different places in the counties of Fairfield, Licking and Knox, Ohio, which required 7,000 miles of automobile driving, and consumed 6 months' time. 2. A proper conception of. the necessary use and effect of natural-gas compressors in natural-gas production necessitates a clear understanding of certain fundamental definitions and judicial doctrines, which are given herein. 3. Gas is a fluid composed of a large number of molecules which are vehicles of energy continually in motion, and having an inherent. tendency to get farther and farther apart. The range of motion of the molecules is limited only by the volume of the closed containing vessel in which they constantly move to and fro. The most distinguishing characteristic of gas is its universal property of completely filling an inclosed space.

The aim of the Trust is to further the development of scientific and technical aids to warfare, by uniting the scientific and the military forces of the country for work together. (2) Committee for chemical war materials (powder, explosives, gas, and the like). (3) Committee for physics, including ballistics, telephony, telegraphy, determination of targets and distances, measurements, and the like. (4) Committee for engineering and communication. (5) Committee for aeronautics. (6) Committee for obtaining and preparation of metals.

DURING a study of reactions involving iron sulfides, it became desirable to know approxi-mately the heat of decomposition of pyrite. The values given for the heats of formation of pyrite and ferrous sulfide are 35,500 calories and 23,070 calories respectively. For the reaction 2FeS2= 2FeS+S:, the heat effect would be-24,860 calories. But pyrite gives sulfur and pyrrhotite upon heating and the latter is a solid solution of sulfur in ferrous sulfide. The only meas-urements of this decomposition are those of Allen and Lombard1 of the Geophysical Laboratory who have measured dissociation pressures of both covellite and pyrite and have carefully reviewed the literature. They give a table of values for covellite as determined by Preuner and Brockmoller2 and by Wasjuchnowa3 and compare these values with their own measurements. The conclusion is that the measurements of Preuner and Brockmoller are seriously in error, while Was-juchnowa's values fit in well with those of Allen and Lombard. Wasjuchnowa's measurements were made by a dynamic method, while Allen and Lombard em-plowed a static method on both covellite and pyrite. Tables I and II reproduce the measurements of Wasjuchnowa and of Lombard and Allen on covellite and pyrite.

From the time of its emergence as an independent state until the late 1950's, the Republic of Ireland suffered from chronic unemployment, the lowest living standard in Northern Europe, and-most serious of all-an aggravated emigration problem which drained off most of its talented young people. In 1958, however, there was a drastic legislative reaction to these problems, and this in turn ignited the current mining boom in Ireland. Paving the Way to Prosperity In order to reverse the tide of emigration, the Irish government now realized, challenging domestic employment opportunities had to be increased and living standards had to be raised. It was also apparent that future industrial and economic growth in Ireland had to be based on producing goods for export. The home market could not sustain large-scale expansion, and consequently Ireland's chronic balance-of-payments deficit could best be minimized by producing export goods. These considerations, together with the limited amount of accumulated wealth in Ireland, combined to set the objectives of the country's First Program for Economic Expansion in 1958. The general objectives of this program were (1) to stimulate all segments of the economy, (2) to develop foreign trade and (3) to attract foreign capital.
