The copper-mining district of Jerome, Ariz., is of such economic importance that the following brief notes may be of interest. The ore deposits are said by Ransome1 to be pre-Cambrian, and are contained in the pre-Cambrian schists of the region. In the vicinity of the mine (the United Verde) the schist stands nearly vertical and strikes a little west of north. At least three varieties are distinguishable—(1) a green rock, schistose on its margins but grading into massive material, which is evidently an altered dioritic intrusive; (2) a rough gray schist with abundant pheno-crysts of quartz, apparently an altered rhyolite; and (3) a satiny, greenish gray, very fissile sericitic schist that may be a metamorphosed sediment. The ore occurs in varieties (2) and (3), the main belt of dioritic rock (1) lying just west of the orebodies. The ore is said to follow as a rule the layers of fine sericitic schist. T. A. Rickard2 Says that the ore at the United Verde Extension mine is found at the contact of diorite and schist, that both diorite and ore are earlier than the regional metamorphism, and that the quartz porphyry ("rhyolite" of Ransome) is of post-Cambrian age. The material considered here, a part of which was gathered by the writer, came from four of the mines of the district, and its study was undertaken at the suggestion of Dr. Berkey of Columbia University. The field relations and exact locations of the different specimens are not known, but a microscopic study of the thin sections gave some evidence as to the origin of the ore, which will be discussed below. The indications are that both ore and porphyry were introduced at the closing stages of the metamorphism, this being in accord with Ransome's view of the genetic relation of porphyry and ore rather than with the opinion that the ore is related to the diorite. Certain field occurrences mentioned in the literature also support this theory. Rickard, in the same article to which reference has been made, speaks of a vein of chalcocite several inches wide at the contact of one of the porphyry dikes, and Provot,3 although he regards the porphyry as subsequent to the ore, says: "Acid dikes encountered underground should be followed as they have been found in practice to lead to orebodies."

A detailed morphological study has been made of the pro-eutectoid TiCr, and the eutectoid reactions in a Ti-17.42 pct Cr alloy isothermally transformed at temperatures from 775° through 5561°C. The morphologies of proeute,ctoid TiCr2 were found to be subject to description by the Dube morphological classification system. Grain boundary allotriomo.lphs are the dominant plpoeutectoid morphology throughout the temperature range investigated. lntragranular plates, and especially Widmanstatten sideplates, form only in small numbers. This morphological pattern differs markedly from that of the proeutectoid a reaction in hypoeutectoid Ti-Cr alloys (AIME Trans., 1957, vol. 209, p. 1227; 1958, vol. 212, p. 624), in which plates form prolifically throughout wide ranges of temperature. The eutectoid reaction is nonlamellar in character at 675°C. An increasingly prominent lamellar component develops at lower temperatures. The proeutectoid TiCr 2 and the eutectoid transformations have been studied metallographically in a hypereutectoid titanium-chromium alloy. This investigation was undertaken with the immediate objective of comparing these transformations with their counterparts in hypoeutectoid titanium-chromium alloys, studies of which have been recently completed.1,2 It was also intended, however, to contribute to the general literature on transformations of these types. Especially in the proeutectoid case, this literature is still sufficiently sparse to make difficult the testing of generalizations on the mechanisms of these transformations. TiCr, is the only intermetallic compound in the titanium-chromium system.3-5 The TiCr2 phase field extends to a maximum temperature of 1350°C) and encompasses the approximate composition range of 62 to 68 pct Cr at lower temperatures.3'4 At temperatures below 1000°C, TiCr2 has a MgCu,-type fcc structure, with 24 atoms comprising a unit cell.6,7 Only fragmentary observations on the morphology of proeutectoid TiCr2 have been previously reported. An observation which is of considerable importance with respect to the results obtained during the present investigation was made, however, on anisother-mally transformed alloys with high chromium (48 to 70 pct Cr) contents.3"8 Despite the occurrence of extensive impingement, it is apparent that a substantial proportion of the proeutectoid TiCr, which precipitated in these alloys grew in the form of Widmanstatten plates. FOLLOWING the techniques used by Beck and co-worker~ "~ the characteristics of selective growth in the recrystallization of a zone-refined aluminum single crystal, rolled 80 pct at -78°C in the (110)[112] orientation, have been studied. The material was 99.999+ pct pure. The as-grown crystal had a resistance ratio, R(298°K) /R(4,2°K), of approximately 5000. The method of preparation of the single crystals and the necessary precautions in handling them during rolling in order to avoid recrystallization in locally distorted regions were described in an earlier paper.3 The rolling texture of this zone-refined aluminum crystal is practically identical with that of less pure aluminum crystals rolle! in the same orientation, i.e., a very sharp (110)[112]. Random nuclei were provided by artificial nuclea-tion by abrading one face of the rolled crystal on 600-grit emery paper in a random fashion. The thin layer of disturbed metal recrystallized at room temperature into fine grains almost immediately. An X-ray diffraction pattern was taken from the abraded surface of the crystal, and the relative intensities of the various reflection peaks were compared with those obtained from a powder specimen. As shown in Fig. 1, the relative intensities of the various peaks from the recrystallized layer varied somewhat from experiment to experiment, depending presumably on the abrading technique. However, the texture of the recrystallized layer produced by this method is nearly as random as that of a powder specimen. Fig. 2 shows the texture determined from the "growth side" (face opposite the abraded surface) of the crystal after it was kept at room temperature for 100 hr. The specimen was only partially recrystallized, as shown by the remaining deformation texture. The new orientations are derived from the recrystallized grains grown through the thickness of the crystal from the "nucleation side" (the abraded surface). Fig. 3 shows the texture after complete recrystallization produced by annealing at 60°C for 1 hr. The arrows indicate 40-deg rotation around the (111) axes of the deformation texture. The microstructure of a completely recrystallized specimen is shown in Fig. 4. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the texture of the re-crystallized grains grown from the nucleation side to the growth side is essentially the same as that observed in less pure aluminum' (99.994 pct) and dilute alloyz crystals rolled in the same orientation. Oil quenching of steel, in good commercial practice, is carried out using a great deal of agitation in the quenching bath. Many of the tests reported in the literature represent the results obtained on steels quenched into still oil. Scott1 describes three stages of cooling in liquid quenching baths, namely: "State 'A'— Vapor Blanket Cooling—In this, the first stage, a thin stable vapor film surrounds the hot metal. Cooling is by conduction and radiation through the gaseous film and is therefore relatively slow. "Stage 'B'—Vapor Transport Cooling— Termination of the 'A' stage is marked by wetting of the metal surface. Vapor forms copiously in bubbles and is carried away by gravity and convection currents to condense in cooler surrounding liquid. This is the fastest stage of cooling. "Stage 'C'—Liquid Cooling—The 'B' stage ends as the surface temperature of the metal approaches the boiling point of the quenching liquid. Vapor no longer forms, so cooling is by conduction and convection and the temperature difference is greatly decreased. This mode of cooling is slower than that of the 'B' stage." Mechanical agitation of the quenching medium will accelerate all three stages of cooling. The greatest effect, however, will be noted on stage ' B' because the removal of the bubbles from the surface of the steel will not be entirely dependent upon gravity and natural convection currents. The method employed in this investigation for evaluating the oils was the end quench test. The various oils were substituted for water as the quenching liquid and hardness determinations were made at various distances from the quenched end. Most of the tests were run using a 3/8-in. orifice with a 21/2-in. stream height. However, to check the effect of other velocities two additional conditions were used, namely: (I) A 3/8-in. orifice and I-in. stream height, and (2) a 1/2-in. orifice and a 31/2-in. stream height. In all cases the samples were suspended so that the quenched end was 1/2-in. above the orifice. Some tests were run on an NE 8740, .3,312, and a 4340 steel. The results obtained on these steels confirmed those obtained on the NE 9450 and have therefore been Omitted from this paper. The test bars were machined from 1/8-in. stock to I-in. diam by 4 in. long.

A study including effects of 7) pH value, 2) fatty acid collector, 3) fuel oil, 4) interfering ion, 5) particle size, and 6) operational variables. Test results indicate feasibility of fatty acid flotation under certain restrictive conditions. FATTY acids have been used as standard collectors for floating the matrix1-8 but not the leached zone phosphate ores. After a series of investigations, Davenport9 and Tarbutton10 concluded that the Florida leached zone ores tested were unamenable to fatty acid flotation and must be upgraded by floating the siliceous gangue with Armac-T as collector. The cationic flotation was estimated11 to cost almost ten times as much as a fatty acid process that would ideally give the same flotation grades and recoveries of phosphates. Mineralization: Extensive deposits of leached zone aluminiferous phosphate occur in Florida."= The ore sample used for this work was obtained from the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp., Clear Springs area, Florida. The ore is a potential source of uranium and aluminum as well as phosphorus. Since the uranium and the recoverable aluminum are contained in some of the phosphate minerals, an upgrading of phosphate results in a corresponding enrichment of both uranium and aluminum. The phosphate minerals in the ore are primarily pseudo-wavellite, millisite, and carbonate fluorapatite, with a minor amount of wavellite. Quartz and clay are the common gangue minerals, quartz being predominant. Others present in small amounts are ilmenite, hydrated iron oxides, staurolite, monazite, and zircon. Experimental Procedures: After being dried to less than 1 pct surface moisture the material was dry-ground in a Hardinge conical ball mill to —6 mesh. The ground product was classified into 6/20, 20/200, and —200 mesh size fractions. On the basis of Table I, the coarse and fine size fractions were considered as phosphate concentrates, because of their high phosphorus contents. In contrast, the 20/200 mesh fraction, which was low in phosphorus, was used as the flotation feed. All the flotation tests, unless otherwise stated, were performed in a laboratory Fagergren machine under the following conditions: 1) 400 g of solid feed for each test, 2) 2000 rpm impeller speed, 3) 8.9 pH and 4-min conditioning, and 4) 3-min flotation. The procedure used for the quantitative bubble pick-up tests has been described previously.18

Decarburized iron and Fe-3.28 pct Ni alloys were impact and tension tested in the temperature range of ambient to 4°K. It was found that alloying with nickel improves the fracture properties of the ferrite matrix. The improvement in toughness of iron alloyed with nickel is attributed to the effect of the nickel addition on the temperature and strain rate dependence of the yield stress as well as on slip behavior. The Fe-Ni alloy exhibits wavy slip when strained at temperatures down to at least 50°K. This behavior contrasts with that of the unalloyed iron where a change It is a generally accepted fact that of the common alloying elements of steel only nickel and manganese improve both the room-temperature yield strength and the notch impact properties. It has been argued for a number of years that manganese refines the ferrite grain size, the pearlite spacing, and the grain boundary carbides in medium- and low-carbon steels and thereby increases resistance to brittle fracture.''' This hypothesis recently was confirmed for a 0.04 pct C iron containing manganese, but at the same time from wavy to planar slip occurs at about 120°K. The observed lower temperature and strain rate dependence of the lower yield stress in the Fe-Ni alloy as compared to the unalloyed iron may be attributed to this difference in slip behavior. In contrast to suggestions published previously, transmission electron microscopy showed that the uniform dislocation distributions and the lack of dislocation tangles which are produced by low-temperature straining of bcc materials cannot be attributed to the absence of cross slip at these temperatures. no increase in notch toughness was observed in a decarburized Fe-Mn alloy.3 It thus appears that manganese only increases the toughness of Fe-Mn-C alloys by refining grain boundary carbides and has no toughening effect in carbon-free iron. On the other hand, the mechanism whereby nickel improves toughness has not been established. Hodge et a1.4 have clearly shown that a 3.28 pct Ni addition lowers the impact transition temperature of 0.02 pct C steel approximately 35°C when the grain size is maintained constant. Recently, Wullaert and Tetelman6 stated that nickel refined the grain boundary carbides of an Fe-C alloy and consequently increased the toughness. They also observed the previously reporteda-'

The world's production of petroleum in 1926 amounted to nearly 150 million long tons, of which India contributed 0.72 per cent. In 1927, this figure jumped to some 172 million long tons, of which the Indian proportion, on a practically stationary production, fell to 0.64 per cent. In 1928, there was another substantial rise in the world's production, which reached the figure of over 181 million tons. In 1929, there was another jump to over 202 million tons, but in 1930 the world's production fell to about 193% million tons, in 1931 to about 187 million tons, and in 1932 to about 183 million tons, while in 1933 the production rose again to about 202 million tons, in 1934 to about 215 million tons, and in 1935 to 233 million tons1. Decreases were shown by Poland, Sarawak, Egypt, Rumania and France. All other important producers showed an increase in production, by far the largest being due to Iraq, as a result of the opening of the pipe line to the Mediterranean. The United States contributed 60.9 per cent of the world's supply in 1935, Russia 10.7 per cent, Venezuela 9.4 per cent, Rumania 3.9 per cent and Iran 3.1 per cent. In 1928, India contributed 0.64 per cent, which fell to 0.60 per cent in 1929 and rose to 0.62 per cent in 1930, 0.63 per cent in 1931, and 0.64 per cent in 1932, and fell again to 0.62 per cent in 1933, to 0.60 per cent in 1934 and to 0.50 per cent in 1935; her position on the list of petroleum-producing countries fell from eleventh in 1929 to twelfth in 1930 to 1933, her place being taken by Trinidad and to thirteenth in 1934 and 1935, owing to the production by Iraq. The production of petroleum in India (including Burma2) increased slightly from 322,025,280 gal.3 in 1934 to 322,662,336 gal. in 1935, the highest figure in the history of the industry. The increase in 1935 is due to an increase of some 4 million gallons in Assam, almost offset by a decrease of 31/2 million gallons in Burma. This increase in output in 1935 was accompanied by an increase in estimated value amounting to Rs. 22,73,550 (£170,944).

INTEREST in the use of graphite as a high-temperature engineering structural material has recently increased markedly. However, actual use of this material has been limited, in part because information about its high-temperature mechanical properties has been lacking. The information needed includes not only reliable values for the properties, but also how to control these properties. Malmstrom, Keen, and Greenl have reported on the tensile and creep properties of some graphites above 2700° F (1500°C). They observed measurable creep under tensile loading at 4000 OF (2200 °C) and higher, with elongations of about 7 pct at 4500°F. Their typical elongation-vs-time curve showed the normal three stages of creep found for many metals at elevated temperatures. The specimens used were heated by passing an electric current through them. This method of heating caused a significant difference between the surface and axis temperatures, and may have affected the results. More recent work by kattus, in which the specfinens were also heated by their own resistance, showed very little plastic deformation for either slow or fast tensile testing or for creep testing. Work at this Laboratory, already reported,3 showed that for temperatures above 4500 "F and under conditions of slow tensile loading some commercial graphites exhibited elongations up to 20 pct. The work reported here is the continuation of a study of the tensile creep behavior of some commercially available synthetic graphites at temperatures up to 5300°F, and is preliminary to a more systematic investigation of the variables governing the high-temperature mechanical properties of graphite. MATERIALS TESTED The tests were conducted on six blocks from four lots of synthetic graphite bearing four different commercial-grade designations. These blocks were selected because their tensile stress—strain properties had been determined in previous work.3 Table I pre- sents the available information, supplied by the producers, on the processing of these materials. Also included in this Table are the densities and the tensile strengths at room temperature and 4500°F determined by the authors. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The furnace used to heat the specimens for testing is shown in Fig. 1. The heating element was a graphite tube, 3-in. OD by 2 1/2 in. ID by 24 in. length. In the course of our studies of the annealing behavior of vapor-deposited silver films we have determined the electrical resistivity as a function of annealing temperature for films in the thickness range of 630 to 3240A. Fig. 1 shows the resistivity of the silver films vs film thickness in as-deposited and annealed conditions. The films were prepared by depositing 99.999 pct pure silver from molybdenum boats onto Vycor substrates. Deposition was conducted at a residual pressure of 5 x 10"6 Torr at rates of 20 to 408, sec-'. Thicknesses were determined using a multiple-beam interferometer. During annealing, resistance was measured using the four-probe method. Measurements were made every 5°C during two consecutive anneals to 300°C under a continuous vacuum of 2 x X6 Torr. The heating and cooling rates during annealing were approximately l° and 2°C min-', respectively. Typical resistivity vs temperature curves are shown in Figs. 2 through 4. There is an inflection point evident at 120°C on Fig. 2, the first anneal of a 3240A film. This inflection point was found on all films above approximately 1!00A on both first and second anneals. Below 1400A the inflection occurred at approximately 180°C. Figs; 3 and 4 show the first and second anneals of a 1370A film. The inflection point occurs at 180°C on the first anneal and approximately 120°C on the second. Our interpretation of this phenomenon is based on oxygen liberation from the film surface. It is well-documented that the presence of oxygen on silver surfaces causes a reversible increase in resistivity.1"3 The liberation of this oxygen, for example during vacuum annealing, would therefore cause a decrease in resistivity as observed on Figs. 2, 3, and 4 as a change in slope. This is accounted for by the decomposition of Ag20 on the film surface. The free energy of AgzO becomes positive between 125" and 225°C.4 The thickness dependence of the inflection points can be explained as an orientation effect. The films used in this study were preferentially oriented with their (111) planes parallel to the Substrate.''~ In addition it has been sten that the thinner films, below approximately 1500A, possess a decided "hill and valley"

BEFORE presenting the main topic, as indicated by the title, this paper will give some of the high-spot history of the anthracite industry. INTRODUCTION The earliest recorded use of anthracite was in the year 1762, when a company of Connecticut pioneers discovered anthracite near the present city of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. In the early days of the industry, the coal was used only in large pieces, the smaller pieces being discarded to waste piles. As the output of the industry increased during the nineteenth century, uses were developed for somewhat smaller sizes down to and including pea coal. Early in the twentieth century, sizes smaller than pea, such as No. I and No. 2 buckwheat, were developed and used. Accu¬mulations of piles from current mining operations were still increasing; that is, the smaller sizes were still being discarded. It was not until after World War I that preparation of the so-called steam sizes began commercially. This was largely No. 3 buckwheat, which is screened through a 3f 6-in. round-hole screen and over a 332-in. or a M 6-in. round-hole screen. USE OF SMALLER SIZES The earliest recorded experience in burning the small sizes of anthracite for steam production, other than in a previous small experiment, was in the year 1913, when a size known as "boiler fuel" was introduced-a mixture of rice and barley (No. 2 and No. 3 buckwheat). At that time, there was still no method known for burning the still smaller sizes. TABLE I.-Screen Sizes Used for Small Sizes of Anthracite [ ] At the present time, various sizes down to and including No. 5 buckwheat are being prepared (Table I) from current mining and bank-reclaiming operations. The sizes of No. 4 and No. 5 buckwheat and smaller are generally being used for steam production in large boilers. The Pennsylvania Power and Light Co., following World War I, used 680,000 tons of anthracite per year, burned largely on stokers for production of steam, whereas for the year 1943 it used 1,940,000 tons of stoker sizes and 400,000 tons of smaller sizes for grinding and burning in pulverized form. This company has taken a very large part in the research and development of ways and means of burning these smaller sizes of anthracite, including the grinding of the very small sizes. This paper is particularly concerned with the latter feature.

THE connection between short-range order and thermodynamic activities in binary solid solutions has been pointed out by Birchenall1 who calculated approximate values of the energy of interaction of Zn and Cu and of the degree of short-range order in alpha-brass at one composition and two temperatures. The purpose of this note is to call attention to a somewhat more accurate theory than that used by Birchenall and to extend the calculations to a wider range of temperatures and compositions as a means of testing its applicability. This is an example of the well-known general method of comparing measured thermo-dynamic functions of a system with those calculated from a microscopic model by means of statistical mechanics. In this case, mathematical approximations must be used which make difficult any decision about the validity of the model. Birchenall's statistical method resembles closely that called by Fowler and Guggenheim2 the "quasi-chemical" method which has been shown to lead in certain cases to results identical with those obtained by the method of Bethe.3 The quasi-chemical method has been extended by Takagi4 to give general formulae for the free energy of binary solid solutions based on several lattices at all compositions and temperatures. Specifically, he treats the four systems typified by: I. ß-brass; 2. a- brass; 3. AuCu3; 4. AuCu. One consequence of the distribution in orientation of Bragg diffracting planes in an elastically bent foil is that simultaneous diffraction occurs from ±g pairs, where g is the reciprocal lattice vector to a diffracting plane. If such Bragg contour pairs are indexed, then the variation in orientation with respect to the incident electron beam is known. This note describes a construction by means of which Bragg contour pairs may be indexed by inspection. Referring to Fig. 1, the Ewald sphere radius is l/h, where is the wavelength of the electron beam, and the half spacing of first-order reciprocal lattice planes is l/d, where d is the corresponding spacing in direct space. The angle subtended by the zero and first-order planes at the center of the Ewald sphere is a = sin-' Thus, to represent a pair of first-order Bragg contours on a stereographic projection, measure ±a from, and along the normal to, the zero-order plane. The traces of the required Bragg contours pass through these points and parallel to the zero-order trace. In practice, it is desirable to enlarge a stereographic projection of the zero-order planes before making the construction. As an example, a stereographic projection of first-order Bragg contours up to line 27 for an fcc crystal is given in Fig. 2; if required, higher-order contours can easily be added. Fig. 2 is, of course, a map of first-order Brillouin zone boundaries. One use of this construction is the measurement of large elastic fields in electron microscope specimens. Fig. 3(a) shows a pattern of Bragg contour pairs due to lattice distortions near a large precipitate. This particular example is of a T-phase precipitate in Hidu-minium 54 (A1 + 6 wt pct Cu, 0.5 wt pct Mn). Foil buckling is produced by annealing during observation and may be evidence for evaporation from the precipitate.' Prior to 1934, published information covering expenditures by oil companies for properties, plant, and equipment and the residual investments in the various segments of the petroleum industry was not readily available. This paper presents an analysis of the funds invested by a selected group of oil companies during the years 1934 through 1942, based on an extensive study of the individual records of 30 oil companies. The sources, disposition, and characteristics of the capital employed by this group of companies are traced through a series of combined statements and appropriate charts, covering financial and operating data. The analysis of these statements not only constitutes a record useful for comparative purposes but also serves as a basis for a number of broad conclusions, as follows: 1. The petroleum industry generates the capital needed for its expansion almost entirely from its own operations and is therefore a singularly self-contained economic unit. 2. The long-term debt contained in the financial structure of the industry is small relative to the total capital employed, is less than the net working capital, and has increased but slightly during the period under review. 3. The capital expenditures of the group of 30 oil companies for 9 years amounted to 6.1 billion dollars, 58.3 per cent of which went into crude-oil producing facilities. The trend of this segment of expenditures has been downward since 1937. In 1942, expenditures for refining facilities increased sharply and for marketing facilities declined drastically. 4. The net working capital of the group increased 380 million dollars over the period, and the industry is in a favorable position of liquidity. The ratio of combined current assets to current liabilities was 3.21 at the close of the period. 5. The net income of the group displayed an upward trend for the period but with rather sharp cyclical fluctuations. 6. In 1942, Government funds entered the industry for the first time in substantial amounts and were utilized for the provision of war facilities needed for emergency use. 7. The group has paid out a relatively low percentage of net income in the form of dividends. For the period the average was 55 per cent of net income. 8. Conditions in the gasoline market undoubtedly influence the oil industry's general economic situation to a greater degree than perhaps any other single factor. No matter how efficiently the oil industry manages to conduct its producing operations, a drop in the price of gasoline exerts definite pressure upon the posted price of crude oil in the field. Efforts of the recent past have shown that profits from the producing division of the industry are closely tied in with the course of the gasoline market. When refinery gasoline prices are depressed, as they have been during recent months, it is utterly impossible for purchasers to maintain a crude market that is commensurate with the cost of production, regardless of how well balanced the producing situation may be. In fact, the producer can no longer regard his operations in the light of an independent unit of the oil industry, since his financial well-being is directly dependent upon the well-being of the refiner. Because gasoline is the principal constituent of crude oil, it is obvious that profitable refining operations can only be maintained through profitable gasoline markets. Likewise, when the price of gasoline influences a profit for the refinery it also influences the prosperity of the producer, through the advent of higher and more profitable posted prices for crude oil in the field. Financial results for 1932 showed material improvement over the preceding year, primarily because the price of gasoline was maintained at levels somewhat above those of 1931. Consequently, the producer was able to record improvement in the crude market, through a somewhat higher level of posted prices. While effective methods of prora-t,ion of crude production are given credit for the advance recorded in the crude market last year, it is also a fact that the advent of higher prices for gasoline had a direct influence upon the posted prices of crude oil. For example, when gasoline was sold in Group 3 at 2 3/4 a gallon in June and July, 1931, the price of 36-gravity Mid-Continent crude was down to its lowest point of only 18c a barrel. As refinery prices advanced, however, there was a corresponding advance in posted prices of crude oil. Thus, when Group 3 gasoline commanded a price of 5c a gallon

The results of this investigation show that in the system SnTe-PbTe l) the solid solutions have small exothermic heats of formation relative to the binary compounds, 2) solid-solution hardening is almost absent, 3) the tin and lead atoms are .randomly distributed on the sublattice occupied by them and do not undergo an ordering transition during a thermal treatment designed to promote such a transition, and 4) the lattice parameter changes linearly with composition. These findings suggest that the solid solutions of tin telluride and lead telluride approach ideal behavior. THE binary compounds SnTe and PbTe form a continuous series of solid solutions.' Information on several physical properties of these solid-solution alloys has been published.1"3 In the work reported here, the heats of formation, microhardness, and lattice parameters of these alloys have been measured and the possibility of an order-disorder transition has been investigated. Order-disorder transitions occur in some solid solutions of binary compounds. In the system Bi2Te3-BizSes, for example, the electropositive bismuth atoms and the electronegative tellurium and selenium atoms always occupy separate layers. In the disordered alloy Bi2Te2Se, the tellurium and selenium atoms are randomly distributed on the layers occupied by them, while in the ordered alloy they occupy distinct layers.4 The NaC1-type (Bl) structure of SnTe-PbTe alloys consists of two sublattices, one of which is occupied by the electropositive tin and lead atoms and the other by the electronegative tellurium atoms; any ordering would be expected to occur in the sublattice occupied by the tin and lead atoms. PREPARATION OF SPECIMENS Polycrystalline specimens of PbTe and Sn1-xPbxTe (x = 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75) were prepared by melting stoichiometric amounts of lead (99.999 pct), tin (99.98 pct), and tellurium (99.999 pct) in evacuated and sealed Vycor tubes. Because of the deviation of tin telluride from the stoichiometric composition5 this compound was prepared by melting 49.8 at. pct Sn and 50.2 pct Te. The tubes containing the melts were quenched into water; the solidified ingots were removed from the tubes and annealed for 2 weeks in vacuum (PbTe approximately 100°C below its melting point, the three alloys 100°C below their solidus tem-

Sharp declines of initial production of both oil and gas occurred in West Virginia during 1943. There was only a small decrease in the number of ncw wells, but these wells did not show the quantities of oil and gas that might have been expected. The same situation prevailed both as to routine drilling in old pools and as to exploratory wildcat wells. Out of 42 wildcats drilled, 19 resulted in small commercial gas wells, and 2 in small commercial oil. No new oil pools were discovered, but the proved limits of several old pools were considerably extended, giving 4200 acres of newly proved oil territory. Three new gas pools, resulting from discoveries made in 1942 and former years, came into definite activity. The newly proved gas territory in these and in various extensions of old pools is 39,000 acres or more. It is doubtful whether the newly proved reserves of either oil or gas will balance current withdrawals. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 696 new wells were drilled, resulting in 82 oil wells with 919 bbl. of daily new production; 475 gas wells with 454,735,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow, and 137 dry holes. Also, 57 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 3 bbl. and 11,484,000 cu. it. of added production. On the new wells, the oil average was 11.2 bbl. per well per day, and the gas average was 957,337 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 19.68 per cent. On deeper drilling the ratio of failures was 14.03 per cent. The greatly decreased average initial gas-well production in 1943, as compared with 2,270,406 CU. ft. per well in 1942, is directly attributable to the abrupt decline of completions in the Charleston gas field, which reached its peak in 1942. Production of oil for the year was estimated by the U. S. Rureau of Mines as 3,349,000 bbl., as compared with 3,574,000 bbl. in 1942. Production of natural gas for the year is estimated by the author as 210,000, 000,000 cu. ft., compared with the U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 215,193,-000,000 cu. ft.* in 1942.
