As a result of work done, on an operating scale, in its experimental mill during 1920 and 1921, the plan here given was proposed for crushing, grinding, and concentrating low-grade sulfide ores at the Morenci Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corpn. The flow sheet is designed to recover 85 per cent. of the total copper and 95 per cent. of the sulfide copper from ore assaying 2.0 per cent. total copper and 0.3 per cent. acid soluble copper. At present, 1400 tons are treated daily under the conditions of this flow sheet, two 700-ton units having been installed in the 4000-ton concentrator. The run-of-mine ore will be reduced, in the dry-crushing plant, to —6 mesh and then delivered to the concentrator feed bins. The crushing will be done in three stages: (I) Run-of-mine ore is reduced to —2 1/2-in. in a gyratory crusher; (2) the 3-in. ore is reduced to 1/2-in. in 72 by 24 in. rolls; (3) the 1/2-in. ore is reduced to — 6-mesh size in 54 by 24 in. rolls. The 54-in. rolls will operate in closed circuit with electrically vibrated screens, "Hum-mer" type, a conveyor circuit being used to carry the roll product to the screens. Sufficient screens will be installed to pass 1.5 tons undersize per hour per square foot. Fine-ore bin chutes will be piped for compressed air, which will be used intermittently to keep the ore feed in motion if it tends to arch or pipe in the bins. The Concentrator The concentration of the copper and iron sulfides in the ore will be effected in three stages: I. By direct treatment of the —6-mesh crushing-plant product on primary tables, which will recover about 35 per cent. of the original copper content of the ore in a clean granular concentrate. The table middling will be dewatered in Dorr rake classifiers and ground to — 48-mesh in ball mills operating in closed circuit with circulating classifiers.

In presenting this paper to the Institute I beg to mention, first, the results which I have obtained and the apparatus which I have employed, and to follow this with a brief description of the steps by which I hare perfected this process. My present mode of testing is as follows: I obtain, either from the furnace or from the finished product in any stage in which it may chance to be, a small test-piece, usually about 3/4 of an inch square by 3 1/2 inches in length. I place this test-piece upon the poles of an ordinary electro-magnet, for about one minute, and thus magnetize it to its extreme limit. I then place it upon an indicator (which I will shortly describe), on which indicator there is already placed a piece of steel of similar form which has been magnetized in the same manner, the percentage of carbon of this second piece being definitely known. I then, by means of a scale, which forms part of the indicator, marked in degrees of carbonization, read the exact percentage of carbon contained in the piece under examination. My apparatus consists of an ordinary electro-magnet, connected with a suitable battery of moderate power, by which I magnetize the pieces as before described, and of an indicator which consists of a magnetic needle suitably mounted or suspended, so that it is free to deviate a few degrees only from the zero point, and having a rest, which is used to check the vibrations when in use, and to support its weight when not in use. At a right angle to the natural position of the needle I have a scale about 3 feet long, the zero point of which coincides with the natural position of the needle. This scale is marked in each direction from the zero point in degrees of carbonization. The marking of the scale is in accordance with the following rule: Taking the carbonization of the steel as a basis, I maintain the same proportion between the squares of the distances on the scale as exists between the percentages of carbon in the steel, for instance, if .08 of

IT has been shown that the isothermal transformation of austenite in a special steel can be modified by isothermal holding in the high subcritical transformation range.' Since this treatment potentially leads to increased hardenability, limited testing has been completed to determine if the stabilization effects observed with this treatment can be used to advantage in the heat-treating of 4340 steel. As an index of the effects of the several austenitizing treatments on the hardenability of the steel, Jominy-type hardenability tests were completed for specimens 2.5 in. in diameter and 8 in. long. Since the steel studied is to be used at strength levels where notch sensitivity is of major concern, notch sensitivity after selected austenitizing treatments has been evaluated by notch tensile tests for several specimen sizes. The steel composition and the austenitizing treatments are given in Table I. The test specimens are presented in Fig. 1. The hardenability data are given in Fig. 2 and the notch tensile properties are presented in Fig. 3. The hardenability of the steel investigated when determined by use of the standard Jominy test specimen2 as high and remained essentially unchanged for the different austenitizing treatments. For the larger test specimen, as has been shown by other investigations," the characteristic hardenability indexes are changed and it becomes possible to isolate austenitizing treatments which promote maximum hardenability. The stepped austenitizing treatment promotes higher hardenability as is indicated in Fig. 2. The evaluation of notch sensitivity for very high strength steels is best accomplished by means of the notch tensile test. The experimental conditions of the test, however, modify the notch strengths measured, and in the present experimentation an effort was made to achieve a limiting notch condition by fixing the notch root radius at 0.001 in. while the specimen diameter was allowed to increase from 0.3 to 1.1 in.* For this root radius the notch strength, 0.3-in.-diam specimen, and this trend differs from that for the larger specimens. At the highest tempering temperatures the 1.1-ip.-diam specimens yield comparable results for the austenitizing treatments compared. Diffusion between gold and indium at two temperatures below the melting point of indium (155.4oC) was investigated. The major, component of the diffusion zone was determined to be AuIn2; the other, intermediate phases in the system occur in much narrower layers In order of decreasing layer width these are: Au9In4, AuIn, Au4In. Inter diffusion coefficients of the four intermediate phases and the terminal solid solutions lie in the range of 2.4 x 10-l3 to 1.8 x 10-11 sq cm per sec. WHEN two metals which do not form a continuous series of solid solutions interdiffuse, each phase in equilibrium at the diffusion temperature should appear as a separate layer in the diffusion zone. In the Au-In system, diffusion plays a significant part in many commercial applications, particularly where indium alloys are used as solders for electrical contacts with very fine gold wire, for estab- lishing electrical contact to thin metallic films, and for mounting metal-coated piezoelectric crystals. A knowledge of the number, extent, and type of phases which form at diffusion temperatures below the melting point of indium, 155.4oC,1 and the diffusion constants for the system would be useful for these practical applications. Of more basic significance, additional information on polyphase diffusion in a system not previously investigated would be gained. The phase relationships in the Au-In system were determined primarily by Kubaschewski and Weibke1 and are based on thermal, microscopic, and X-ray analysis, Fig. 1. There are five intermediate phases in the system having approximate compositions corresponding to the formulas: Au4ln (ß)—80.0 at. pet Au; Au3In (?)— 75.0 at. pet Au; Au9In4 (d)—69.2 at. pet Au; AuIn—50.0 at. pet Au; AuIn2—33.3 at. pet Au. Solid solubility of indium in gold at 700°C is reported as 12.64 at. pet and at 406°C as 10.36 at. pet. No solid solubility of gold in indium is reported.

Aging is a term that connotes a slow change in properties under ordinary operating conditions. It can be accelerated by increasing the temperature and by mechanical straining. The magnetic properties of iron and some of its alloys have for many years been known to be subject to such a change. But the cause of the change was not recognized until a few years ago after mechanical age-hardening in non-ferrous alloys of the "duralumin" type had been definitely shown, by means of solid solubility curves, changes in electrical resistance and microanalysis, to be caused by slow precipitation of one or more constituents from the solid solution. The similarity between the solid solubility curves of such alloys (Fig. 1) and those for iron-nitrogen (Fig. 2) and iron-carbon alloys (Fig. 3) below the A1 transformation point suggested at once that magnetic aging of iron might be caused by a similar process; namely, by the slow precipitation of carbon and nitrogen in the form of Fe4N and Fe3C at ordinary temperatures because of a cooling rate that had been too rapid to permit complete precipitation according to equilibrium conditions. This suggestion has since been amply confirmed, particularly by the comprehensive work of Köster1 on the effect of nitrogen and carbon. Typical curves are shown in Fig. 4 for the relationship between aging temperature and coercive force. Previous to the establishment of the precipitation-hardening theory it was thought that the effect of nonmetallic elements like C, N, O, etc., on the magnetic properties of iron was greatest when these elements were retained in solid solution, atomically dispersed throughout the interstitial spaces of the iron lattice2. Based on the theory that magnetic properties are intimately connected with the regularity of the lattice, it now follows quite logically that a greater effect on this regularity may be obtained when the above impurities are precipitated as very fine particles of Fe3C, Fe4N, FeO, etc., more or less uniformly dispersed within the grains. The plasticity of unalloyed P plutonium was studied by evaluating the strain-rate-hardening exponent, m, in the equation Values of m up to 0.33 and tensile elongations up to 680 pct were obtained for ß plutonium formed directly from the a phase. Casl bars that were cycled and tested had lower flow stresses and higher values for than uncycled bars , hut their total plastic elongations were not as great as expected because of premature failure at voids formed during cycling. Flow stresses were higher and m was lower (m = 0.15) for 9 plutonzutn formed from the y phase. ThE strain-rate-hardening exponent for plastic flow of p plutonium was determined as a function of strain rate, test temperature, and heat-treating history, and it was related to the rather large plastic elongation found previously for some plutonium tensile samples. Gardner and ~ann' obtained tensile elongations of up to 620 pct for P plutonium samples which had been completely transformed from the low-temperature a phase to the P phase before testing. Such a large percentage elongation is unusual for unalloyed metals or single-phase alloys.' The a phase is stable below approximately 112°C and (3 is stable between approximately 112" and 190"c.~ Both phases have mono-clinic structures. A temperature of 160°C is 0.58 of the effective absolute melting point, 475°C) of the p phase. The effective melting point is obtained by considering the enthalpy and entropy changes associated with the higher-temperature phase transformations and it is not the same as the experimental melting point of the highest-temperature allotrope of unalloyed plutonium. Nelson, Bowman, and Bierlein observed a striking difference between the ductility, as well as other mechanical properties, of p plutonium formed from the next higher-temperature phase (y) and the ductility of /3 plutonium formed from the a phase. The total elongation of /3 plutonium formed from the y phase was less than 5 pct. Earlier, the creep rate of 13 plutonium formed from the a phase was shown to be 200 to 500 times faster than the rate for 0 formed from y for the same test temperature and stress.

The production of petroleum in Rumania in 1932 totaled 52,560,000 bbl., an increase of 6.8 per cent over 1931. The average daily production rose from 123,000 bbl. at the beginning of the year to 173,000 bbl. at the end of the year, the production in the Gura-Ocnitzei field rising from 38,800 to 80,700 bbl. per day. This increase was due to competitive development during which time the percentage of total production of the various operating companies remained practically unchanged. Chief producers were: Concordia, 30.3 per cent; Unirea, 21.6; Romano-Americana, 13.5; Steaua Romana, 8.3. Boldesti, where production of the previous year was practically doubled, would have produced far greater quantities were it not for the fact that both Astra Romana and Romano-Americana curtailed drilling operations. Of the total daily production of 21,800 bbl. a day, the Astra Romana, Steaua Romana and Romana Americana, produced respectively 67, 25 and 8 per cent. The Moreni field showed a sudden drop in production from the preceding year, due primarily to reduced drilling activities. Its production of only 21,000 bbl. a day removes it from first position for the first time in many years. All the other fields showed a decrease in production, except Ochiuri, 3 miles west of Gura-Ocnitzei, and Ceptura, 12 miles east of Boldesti. Drilling1 During the first nine months of 1932, 116 wells were completed, 8 of which were dry holes. The Meotian (lower Pliocene) is the producing horizon in 73, the Dacian (upper Pliocene) in 31, and the Oligocene in 4 of the completed wells. Three of the Oligocene wells were drilled in the Bacau district and one at Grausor, near Campina. In addition, 47 wells were drilling on Oct. 1,1932. Of the total completions and drilling wells, 92 per cent employed rotary for a footage of 98.5 per cent of the total drilled. Power for rotary drilling was furnished to 105 wells by steam, to 38 by electricity, and to one by gasoline.

SATISFACTORY metallographic sample preparation of very soft metals, such as lead and its alloys is generally difficult. The prime requisite of any technique must be that the result gives an undis-torted microstructure for the microscopist to examine. A small amount of mechanical polishing followed by a chemical or electrolytic polish is usually the most desirable way to obtain an undis-torted surface. Several chemical-4 and electrolytic3-' polishing solutions have been developed for dilute lead alloys. Perchloric acid mixtures (with acetic anhydride, ethyl alcohol, or water) are among the most prominent electropolishing solutions used for lead; however, the presence of bismuth in the alloy precludes the use of any perchloric-containing solution. The other solutions1-7 were found to be unsatisfactory on alloys ranging from 10 to 65 wt pct Bi in lead. With increasing bismuth content, the microstructure shows a lead (terminal solid solution), 0-6 mixture, E (peri-tectically formed hexagonal phase), and E bismuth mixture (eutectic at 56.7 wt pct Bi).9 The metallographic samples were mounted in "Araldite" epoxy (the heat generated during polymerization does not alter the microstructure), ground by hand on well-waxed silicon carbide papers (400 and 600 grit), and polished with 3- and 0.25-CL diamond paste on billiard and microcloths, respectively. The use of the various polishing and etching solutions reported in the literature resulted in the formation of irremovable reaction products on the sample surface when applied to "as-ground" or "as-polished" surfaces. The E phase was the most difficult to clean chemically and in the development of an etchant for this system several solutions which satisfactorily etched the bismuth or a phase were unacceptable because of their reaction with the E. It was found that a mixture of 50 ml lactic acid 30 ml nitric acid 20 ml (30 pct) hydrogen peroxide (Solution #1) was a satisfactory etchant for the a-matrix alloys. The samples were prepared as before and etched after 1 min of polishing with 3-p diamond paste. The etchant was applied by swabbing (light pressure) for 30 sec to 1 min and the sample was then rinsed in running water. The E has a slight stain and the a is fairly bright, Fig. 1.

Trinidad, British West Indies, is an island near the north coast of South America, situated between latitudes 10" and 11" N., and opposite the numerous outlets of the Orinoco River Delta. It is separated from Venezuela by the Gulf of Paria (salt water) and straits over 5 mi. (8 km.) wide. The area of the island is approximately 1750 sq. mi. (453,-250 hectares) and the population is approximately 400,000. The climate is tropical with an annual rainfall of from 45 to 60 in. (114 to 152 cm.). The oil fields consist of several units, or fields, located in the southern half of the island. Approximately 90 per cent. of the total production has been yielded by fields situated within 7 mi. (11.3 km.) of the famous asphalt lake and on the southwest peninsula. The most important producing fields, or units, are the following, which are shown on the accompanying map: Brighton, or Pitch Lake Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated beside the famous Pitch Lake; it even encroaches on the lake. Vessigny Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated 2 mi. (3.2 km.) south of Pitch Lake. Lot One Field, operated by the Petroleum Development Co., Ltd., the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., and Stollmeyer, Ltd., is situated 3 mi. south of Pitch Lake upon Lot One of Morne 1'Enfer Forest Reserve and adjoining properties. Parry Lands Field, operated by the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., and the Petroleum Development Co., Ltd., is situated 31/2 mi. south of Pitch Lake on Lot Three of Morne 1'Enfer Forest Reserve and adjoining properties. Point Fortin Field, operated by the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., is situated at Point Fortin, 6 mi. southwest of Pitch Lake. Fyzabad Field, operated by Trinidad Leaseholds, Ltd., is situated several miles southwest of Fyzabad Village and 6 mi. south-southeast of Pitch Lake. Barracpore Field, operated by Trinidad Leaseholds, Ltd., is situated several miles south of San Fernando and 15 mi. (24.14 km.) east of Pitch Lake.

A vector analysis of orientating single crystals using the Laue back-reflection X-ray technique is given. Briefly, the analysis involves using a few data taken from a Laue photography and defining the crystal co- ordinate axes in a reference coordinate system. After a few matrix multiplications, the proper goniometer angles can then be determined to orient the crystal coincident with the reference frame. This analysis is easily programed for a digital computer to provide a fast, precise, and efficient method of orienting many crystals which are identical. The general procedure is as follows. The crystal is mounted on a goniometer. Laue photographs are taken until an array of diffraction spots is observed that includes a Laue spot that represents a rotational axis of symmetry. The rotation angles of goniometer are recorded. These angles are defined as positive for a counterclockwise rotation. When the axis of symmetry is located on the Laue photograph, the crystal coordinate axes can be defined in the reference coordinate system* as follows. Two Laue spots are chosen, one of which corresponds to the rotational axis of symmetry and the other to a set of planes whose zone axis is a known crystallographic direction and normal to the rotation axis of symmetry. The Laue spots are used to determine these two crystal directions in the reference coordinate frame. This is done by placing the Laue photograph on a sheet of polar coordinate graph paper and determining the polar coordinates (r, o) of these two diffraction spots in the reference coordinate frame. Their third coordinate is the distance between the crystal and the film (-D). The coordinates Xni of the two crystal directions Nn, (n = 1, 2) in the reference frame are then calculated by the following equations: Xn1 = -D X2n = Ancos on X3n = A, sin on where -tan- 1 rn/D An =Dtan(tan-1rp/D/2) By taking the proper cross products of these two directions (normalized to unit vectors), the crystal coordinate axes 3 (i = 1, 2, 3) can be determined in the reference frame. As a result of the great demand for metallic aluminum and the scarcity of domestic bauxite, numerous processes have been proposed and developed to extract the oxide of this metal (Al2o3) from clays, shales, and other low-grade raw materials.1-4 An exploratory study was made to extract alumina with sulfuric acid from relatively impure coal-associated draw-slate and to establish an optimum calcination temperature for maximum recovery. Draw-slate is the term used to describe the hard, slaty material directly overlying many coal seams and may range from a few inches to a few feet in thickness. Alumina content of these draw-slates may range from as low as 15% to over 35%. Although the following results are limited in scope, some of the data should prove beneficial for further work. Coal-associated clay, shale, and gob heretofore have been considered nuisance products; any successful alumina extraction process would greatly enhance the worth of these almost limitless resources. This research demonstrated that an optimum calcination temperature for alumina extraction could be established for a coal-associated draw-slate and that this temperature was lower than those suggested in previous work with unspecified clay types. It should be noted that slightly higher acid concentrations and somewhat finer particle sizes were used in this series of tests as compared to previous work. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Essentially, alumina extraction proceeded in four steps: 1) grinding, 2) calcining, 3) acid leaching, and 4) precipitating of aluminum sulfate. An initial series of reference tests to determine the optimum temperature of solubility for alumina was run using relatively pure kaolin. Kaolin forming clays are hydrous aluminum silicates of the approximate composition 2H2O A12O3 2SiO and kaolinite is the mineral that predominates in most kaolins. 5 The kaolin was ground to -30 mesh and subsequently calcined at temperatures ranging from 100°C to 700°C. Each sample was calcined for 1 hr in a muffle furnace and in turn subjected to sulfuric-acid leaching (H2SO4, 9 molar) for a 2-hr period. Mr. Grieves' paper on "Shaft Sinking Today --A Boring Business Tomorrow" in the Dec. 1981 issue of MINING ENGINEERING is an excellent description of recent improvements in speed and costs of shaft sinking. However, shaft boring techniques are not a recent development. In 1935-36, the Idaho Maryland Co. (gold), Grass Valley, CA, bored the vertical 1.5-m-diam Idaho No. 2 ventilation and supply shaft to a depth of 346 m. The equipment was designed and perfected by Branner Newsome and was, I believe, described in "Transactions." Pickands Mather later bored a 1.8-m-diam shaft to a depth of about 305 m using Newsome's design. The Idaho No. 2 shaft cut through hard gabbro, diabase dikes, soft serpentine, very incompetent ankeritized serpentine and a strong fault zone. The completed shaft did not require timber support; the fault zone was cemented. Equipment consisted of a rotating 1.5-m or 3-m core barrel with a slotted bottom which cut a 76-mm kerf. The cutting agent was chilled steel shot introduced into the slot as needed. The driving mechanism and core barrel were lowered into the shaft, the former secured to the wall and the inshaft "engineer" operated the motors which controlled core barrel rpm and advance. After an advance of 1.5-3 m the equipment was lifted out of the shaft, a half(?) stick of powder cut off the drilled core, and it was hoisted to the surface with a cable attached to an eye bolt at the tope of the core. A "shift" consisted of three men: hoistman, equipment operator (down the shaft), and a surface laborer. Advance was variable as equipment and techniques were perfected. Near the end of the job advance was, as I remember, 1.5-3 m per shift. Costs were, as I recall, about $115/m. Up to 4 m cores were lifted out in one piece and swung to the dump by a stiff leg derrick. The Newsome equipment was relatively inexpensive to build and operate and his method should be (more than?) competetive with the methods described by Grieves.

Victor G. Hills, Cripple Creek, Colo. (communication to the Secretary): In continuation of the subject of the perform ance of "baby machine-drills," presented by Mr. Thane, I sub mit the following records of work done with these drills in the Cripple Creek district of Colorado. Two years ago, the Anchoria-Leland mine began to use baby drills ; and, to make the experiment more complete, began by purchasing two machines, of the same size, but of different make. The little drills were first used for stoping and up raising, in which they achieved at once an unqualified success. Soon after, they began to be used for the smaller branch-drifts and prospecting cross-cuts, while the large two-man drills were still used for the main drifts. Now they have almost entirely superseded the large drills, since it has been found that they will do any ordinary work in the mine at less cost, both for labor and for powder, per ton of rock broken. The large drills, of course, make more rapid progress; but it is only where time is a specially important factor that they are now used. The Portland mine, where, until within a year, only the large machines were used, is now using some small drills for stoping, and also for drifting. Mr. Thane speaks of having two men to operate a baby-drill; but in this district the baby-machine is always worked by one man without help. Again, in Prof. Christy's postscript, the quoted extract from a letter of Mr. L. T. Seymour, the South African engineer, mentions a " 2 1/2-inch Little Giant," as though that were the smallest machine used in that region. These statements leave some doubt as to just what Mr. Thane means by a " baby-drill." To avoid any such uncertainty as to the present communication, I will say that the large or two-man drill in common use at Cripple Creek has a 3 1/8-inch cylinder; while a few mines employ a 3-inch, and a few, in running large tunnels, a 3 1/2-inch drill. Operating costs were rather high so a complete test was undertaken early in 1921. The ovens will be referred to as Nos. 1, 2, and 3. Nos. 1 and 2 are electric ovens of different makes while No. 3 is an oil-fired oven made by the firm that made No. 2. The three arc. equipped with similar ventilating devices. They have full-height doors at front and rear. The cores are placed on iron racks, which arc lifted by Cowan trucks and rolled into the ovens through the front doors. When baked, they are removed through the rear doors. Fig. 1 shows the general plan of the elecric ovens while Fig. 2 shows the plan of the oil-fired oven. Oven No. 1 is 91 in. (231 em.) wide, 83 in. (210 em.) high. and 79 in. (200 cm.) deep, inside measurements. The walls are constructed ill panels about 18 in. (46 cm.) wide and 43/16 in. (10.6 em.) thick, packed with blocks of insulating material and covered with sheet iron. Thc concrete floor oil which the owns set is 13 in. (33 cm.) thick. 4 recess about 5 in. THE Hayden mill of the Ray Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corporation, is now equipped with two 9 by 12-ft. rod mills having a daily capacity of 6000 tons of coarse-crushing plant product from the mine. These two mills crush a ¾ -in. product to approximately 19 per cent on 14 mesh, with only one pass through the mills. Each rod mill has taken the place of four sets of 42-in. Garfield rolls with their attendant screens, and is making a product for the fine-grinding department comparable to that formerly made by rolls in closed circuit with screens. The rod mills are lined with wave-type liners of white iron, varying in thickness from 2 to 3 in. The shell and end liners last approximately 600 to 700 days. Manganese-steel lifter bars, 3 5/8 in. thick, are used, spaced about 11 in. apart, and they give a life of 350 to 450 days. Fig. 1 shows the general design and thickness of the wave-type liners and lifter bars; 1 ½ -in. liner bolts are used to fasten the lifter bars to the shell. The shell liners are held in place by the tapered lifter bars. A 3/4-in. wood backing is used between the shell and the liners. The rod-mill scoop has removable manganese-steel lips, which last 250 to 300 days. The scoop proper has shown some wear in spots, and these spots have been protected by rubber bolted over them. Water and milk of lime are added to the elevator feeding the mill, but not enough water to cause a pounding of the rods against the shell. Roughly, the water added amounts to 25 to 33 per cent of the ore. Additional water is added to the mill discharge to facilitate distribution to the classifier bowls in the fine-grinding department. Rods are charged to the mill once every four days, the mill being down about 20 min. for this purpose. Other delays are negligible, and usually are due to a loose liner bolt or possibly power trouble. However, these occasions are extremely rare. In charging the mill, a crane is used

THE average daily production of crude oil-in Kansas a1 the beginning of the year was about 71,000 1 bbl. and, at its close, 82,000 bbl.-an increase of 11,000 bbl. per day. The total production for the state during the year was about 28,250,000 bbl., or an average of practically 77,500 bbl. per day for the year. This increase in the production was the result of the discovery of several new pools of high-grade oil. COWLEY AND SUMNER COUNTIES One of the principal factors in bringing the production of the. state back to its former level was the newly discovered pools in western Cowley County. During December, 1923, the Waite Phillips Co. completed its Johnson No. 1 in Sec. 20, T. 33 S., R. 3 E., which opened up the Rainbow pool about 12 miles southwest of Winfield. In this pool, the production comes from the Burbank sand, locally called the "Rainbow," found at a depth of 3200 ft. The sand varies in thickness from 25 to 40 ft. in the seventeen wells completed during the year, and the initial productions ranged from 300 to 3000 bbl. per day of 40° Be. oil. The Rainbow pool is purely a wildcat discovery, for no. rocks suitable for the use of the geologist are present. To determine the geologic conditions, the larger companies core-drilled the Rainbow area immediately after the discovery. The Marland Refining, Co., drilling on the Graham farm in Sec. 9, T. 33, R. 3, failed to find the Burbank sand and continued to the Siliceous lime, often erroneously called the Wilcox, at 3505 ft., where a well with an initial production of 900 bbl. of 40 Be. oil was obtained. In the development following this discovery, 4 additional wells were completed, 3 of which encountered pay sand at 2500 ft., the initial productions each being about 200 barrels. Judging by the sands already proved and the area indicated as probably oil bearing by the development to date, these pools have a very promising outlook for the future. It is not unlikely that a field second only to El Dorado may have been opened.

The data which are collected in Table 1 show that the ferrite of low-carbon steel and of electrolytic iron, like the network of hypo- and hyper-eutectoid carbon steel, inherits, either absolutely or relatively, the grain size of the mother austenite from which it is born in cooling through the transformation range. This evidence is so abundant and concordant as to cast doubt on Prof. Jeffries'l hypothesis of what might be called reversed inheritance, by which he explains Mr. Ruder's observation2 that a grain in a "slug of pressed pure electrolytic iron powder" was coarser, perhaps 1,500,000p2, aftcr a 3-hr. exposure to 1000" C. than after a 3-hr. exposure to 1250-1300°, when the grain size was about 35,000µ2. His explanation implies a natural tendency of coarser austenite grains to yield finer ferrite ones than spring from finer austenite grains, so that the inheritance is reversed. What seems to me a simpler explanation is that the enormous grains which followed the 1000" heating were not inherited from the mother austenite, but were formed by the process of natal coarsening, by means of which Stead and Carpenter developed grains of this same order of magnitude in this same kind of material, on heating to 950" or to 1000°, the temperature used by Mr. Ruder, provided the exposure was not unduly prolonged, and it does not seem to have been in Mr. Ruder's case. That their coarsening was natal and not through inheritance is shown first by the fact that their grain coarseness was out of all proportion to their relatively low temperatures and short periods, and hence was very far in excess of the grain size which the mother austenite must have had, and second and more cogently by the fact that the shape of these coarsened grains was evidently determined by the temperature distribution which existed during and immediately after the Ar3 transformation, that during the passage from the gamma to the non-gamma state.
