LEONARD Utilization from the Point of View of the Preparation Engineer The primary interest of the coal preparation engineer is process design, operation and maintenance to produce an acceptable product which can be sold at the greatest possible profit. Because of these interests, attention to the unrealized potential value of coal is sometimes neglected. The intent of this chapter is to alert the preparation engineer to the utilization possibilities of both the product as well as the tributary coal flow moving through a modem coal preparation plant. Thus, coal types having similar physical and chemical properties tend to become increasingly concentrated according to size, specific gravity and/or surface chemistry. The basis for any unrealized potential derives directly from the coal seam itself. Most coal seams consist of coal bands and benches which are sandwiched together in layers and which visually differ from each other by physical structure and luster. Randomly selected physical and chemical ranges determined from layers of coal in a single seam can easily differ by as much as 30 Hardgrove grindability indices, 0.30 of a specific gravity point, 20 percentage points of ash, six percentage points of dry volatile matter and 10 percentage points of total sulfur.1 Similar wide variations exist for calorific value, seam moisture content and undoubtedly, for any other conceivable coal test parameter which might be used for comparative purposes. These observations all point to the long established fact that coal is not homogeneous as conventional analytical methods might tend to indicate, but is instead a highly heterogeneous substance. Since both coal and associated minerals entering a preparation plant are highly heterogeneous, a multi-product potential beginning with certain flotation cell concentrates and ending with plant refuse may exist. Such a potential can and to a limited extent is achieved at some operations by drawing off coal according to size, specific gravity and/or surface chemistry differences from individual coal cleaning processes. Such a sequenced draw-off of coal of increasing ash increments could yield, among other products, chemical coals, coking coals, coals for pulverized fuel boilers, cyclone boiler coals, coals for cement plants, limestone, shale and clay. Silver-lead-zinc replacement deposits occur in limestones of the anticlinal Caja range at Providencia, near Avalos, Zacatecas, Mexico. The description deals with intrusives, outcrops, preferred horizons, changes from bedding to fracture, control in depth, and variations in abundance and ratios of minerals throughout a vertical range of 500 m. THE purpose of this paper is to record a few field observations and accumulated office data concerning outcrops, relation of ore occurrences to intrusive and host rock, and mineral zoning. Reasons for some of the phenomena are not clear to the author so the facts are given with the hope that other investigators may be able to furnish the explanations. The Avalos unit of the Compania Minera de Penoles, S. A., operates the Alicante, Bonanza, Providencia, Albarradon, San Eligio, Nazareno, Leona, Salaverna, and Santiago mines situated between Avalos railroad station and Concepcion del Oro on the Coahuila and Zacatecas railroad in the State of Zacatecas, Mexico. Some of these mines are within Penoles property while others are on mining claims leased from the Compania Nazareno y Catasillas, S. A., Mazapil Copper Co., and the American Smelting and Refining Co. The main office and camp are at Providencia, about 170 km southwest of Monterrey, N. L., so the silver-lead-zinc mines of the district are usually referred to as the Providencia mines. The Aranzazu, Catarroyo, and Cabrestante copper-gold mines are situated a few kilometers to the southeast on the same mountain range near Con- cepcion del Oro, the name by which the camp is known. It is operated by the Mazapil Copper Co. The main theme in the following pages is a description of the silver-lead-zinc ore occurrences of the district. Rock Formations Sedimentary Rocks: Many competent geologists have contributed generously to an ample fund of information concerning the sedimentary columns of northern Mexico. Among them are Carlos Burck-hardt, E. Bose, L. B. Kellum, and R. W. Imlay. Carlos Burckhardt, who covered a number of extensive areas in many parts of the Mexican Republic, devoted years to mapping the geology of the Caja, Zuloaga, and Santa Rosa mountain ranges around Mazapil, Concepcion del Oro, and San Pedro de Ocampo, Zacatecas. It is always the case with heavy and cheap materials that the area within which they can be economically used depends upon the cost of transportation, and in those days of poor roads and no mechanical means of haulage on them, coal could only be moved a few miles from the mine by any other means than water. The need of better means of transport to the areas west of the mountains had been urged by Washington and many other leaders, but the first turnpike over the Alleghenies only reached the Ohio River at Wheeling, W. Va. in 1818. The James River and Kanawha road reached the Ohio in 1831, that from Winchester, Va. to Parkersburg in 1838, and the road through the Cumberland Gap was completed in 1797. None of these affected the coal industry excepting indirectly by building up some of the river towns which coal could reach. The inadequacy of roads alone to carry the traffic of the rapidly growing interior communities was demonstrated only a few years after the National Pike was completed, and in the early 1820's several of the states embarked upon the construction of a canal system, which had been under discussion for some years. The Erie Canal was opened in 1825 from Lake Erie to the Hudson River through New York; Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland had already started similar projects designed to bring traffic to their principal cities from the interior. The Pennsylvania Canal was started from Columbia, as a railroad extended from Philadelphia to that point, and it followed the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers to Hollidaysburg; thence to Johnstown, a distance of 36 miles, where it consisted of partly railroad and partly inclined planes, the boats being hauled up, and lowered down the planes; from Johnstown the canal followed the Conemaugh, Kiskiminitas and Allegheny Rivers to Pittsburgh, 104 miles. Boats first reached Pittsburgh by this route in 1834. The Chesapeake and Potomac Canal followed the Potomac River from a point above Alexandria above the falls, to Cumberland. This canal was chartered in the eighteenth century and a portion of it was used by traffic in 1800. It was too small to be of much use and was abandoned, and later after many legal and financial vicissitudes was completed to Cumberland, traffic from there starting late in 1850. When the position was first suggested to me, I resolutely declined to allow the use of my name, on the ground that, by training and occupation, I was not entitled to this honor, which, it then seemed to me, should be conferred only on a professional engineer. In fact, the history of the Institute, which had honored itself, as well as my distinguished predecessors, David Thomas, Rossiter W. Raymond, and Alexander L. Holley, by elevating them to its highest office, seemed to indicate the line and the limit of safe precedent, in which I did not then see how I could be included. But my scruples were finally removed by the consideration that, as in the course of human industry, the pioneer, of whom Mr. Thomas was so marked a type, must precede the mining engineer, so fitly personified in Dr. Raymond, and be followed by the mechanical engineer, whose incarnation we behold in Mr. Holley; so all these must be supplemented by the man of affairs and finance, in order that "enterprises of great pith and moment" may be prosecuted to a successful issue. I felt, therefore, that I had no longer any right to resist your preference, or to deprive myself of what I must regard as the crowning honor of an active career. On an occasion like the present it seems appropriate to review the history in this country, during the last hundred years, of those industries which the Institute of Mining Engineers specially represents. There is much in the story with which other members of this body are more familiarly acquainted than myself; yet I fancy that to all of them, and not less to our distinguished and most heartily welcome guests from abroad, a comprehensive outline of the progress of mining and metallurgy in the United States will prove interesting. I ask your attention, therefore, to a condensed account of that subject, embracing a statement of the beginnings of the industry on our shores, of the notable events attending its increase, and of its present

Y.-I notice Mr. Bosqui says that zinc dust can be used profitably. I had occasion recently to try to ship some zinc deist to South Africa, owing to the. high price of zinc in the last six or eight months and the difficulty in getting zinc sheets We were informed that the steamship companies in England refused to accept zinc dust for shipment through the tropics on the score that it was an explosive mixture. C. W. MERRILL, San Francisco, Cal.-In the early days zinc dust was packed in wooden casks. The steamers at that time were very chary of transporting it. It was put on the deck in the wooden casks, and if the zinc dust got wet it exploded. Since that time we have used hermetically sealed cases, in which case there is no risk whatever in its transportation.. This rule of the steamship companies is perhaps another sample of their ultra-conservativeness. HENNEN JENNINGS, Washington, D. C.-Unfortunately, I have not yet read Mr. Bosqui's paper, but believing it might interest you to know something of the beginning of the cyanide process on the Rand, I will speak briefly as to my own knowledge and experience of the early initiation of this process in South Africa. I took the position of consulting engineer of H., Eckstein, the parent firm of H. Eckstein & Co., and a branch of the firm of Wernher, Belt ,C Co., at Johannesburg, in December, 1889, and at that time the Robinson Co. managed by them was the premier company of the fields. Up to this date plate amalgamation and catchment of a small percentage of concentrates by blankets, and in a few instances Frue vanners, were the main gold-saving devices used and had obtained an extraction' of only about 65 per cent of the gold contents of the ore. Also at that time the orebodies were seen to be changing from oxidized deposits to pyritic at varying depths from 50 ft. to 300 ft. below the surface, and uneasiness was felt as to future recovery. The deepest exploitation at any of the mines was not much below 300 ft.

The eleven mines of the United States Coal and Coke Co. in the Pocahontas coal field are situated in McDowell County, W. Va., which is a mountainous region. The valleys rarely exceed 200 ft. (60 m.) in width, the hillsides slope from 25°to 33°, and the tops, from 600 to 900 ft. above the valleys, carry practically no level land. At least 80 per cent. of the area is covered with timber. All the workings are drift mines; and while the average grades of the seams worked are ample for drainage, local dips and swamps necessitate the use of a large number of local pumps or of numerous drainage ditches to keep the mines free from water during heavy rains. The water handled in any mine is not great, compared with the coal output, and usually causes little trouble except during extremely wet periods. In new workings, the water encountered, except in rare cases, is trifling; it is only after rib drawing has started and the surface has been broken that water troubles begin. The strata overlying the coal are sandstone, shales, and slates; as the soil is thin and sandy, it does not tend to puddle and stop the cracks, which remain open for a long time. As mining progresses and the robbed area increases, the broken area becomes larger, increasing the openings into the mined territory. The cover over the robbed portions of the mines varies from 30 to 750 ft. (9 to 228 m.). When the ground is saturated, considerable water finds its way into the mines the day after a heavy rainfall and for three or four days it tends to fill the low places, wash the tracks, etc. and unless from three to four times as many pumps are installed as are normally needed, considerable output is lost. In most cases the water will flow from the mines, and the obvious solution is to provide drainage ditches of ample size to carry the maximum flow expected, so that the inflow will have no opportunity to flood the working places. Laying out the drainage headings on the proper average grades was an easy matter but where blasting was necessary to provide uniform grades, as was frequently the case, it was important that the maximum flow to be expected and the size of ditches to be provided should be known so that only rock work necessary to provide proper drainage

The 3-parameter equation* was introduced1 as having the necessary form and flexibility for describing the major features of size distribution curves. Also, Eq. 1 was shown to contain most of the widely used 2-parameter equations as special cases. Special methods are necessary in order to determine the parameters of 3-parameter equations by graphical means. The procedure given previously required double graphical interpolation followed by regraphing the interpolated data. The theoretical basis of the method was a difference equation eliminating y. Several other methods for obtaining the parameters have been under development and one method appears to overcome the disadvantages of the earlier method and satisfies several procedural requirements. The points in favor of the new method as compared to the earlier method are as follows: 1. Estimation of the quality of fit is direct, and is in fact an essential part of the procedure. 2. The data is plotted directly without the necessity of interpolation from a graph. 3. The method makes use of Rosin-Rammler2 paper which because of expanded scaling in the coarse sizes leads to improved accuracy1 as compared with the log-log plot for the Gates3-Gaudin4-Schubann5 representation. 4. There is a gain over the earlier method in overall accuracy and in simplicity.

[During the last few years, the necessity for development work has been generally recognized by executives throughout the oil industry, resulting in greatly accelerated progress and the adoption of many noteworthy improvements in refining methods and equipment. Several years ago, the Associated Oil Co. decided to improve distillation methods with the object of reducing refining costs. This extremely interesting work was entrusted to the writer, and W. S. James, now Chief of Research for Studebaker Corpn. of America, was selected as the principal collaborator. The latter contributed much during his two years with the Associated Oil Co., to the development work that has followed. The writer extends to the Associated Oil Co. his appreciation for permission to disclose the details of distilling equipment. In petroleum refining the principal requisites of good economics are the separation of high-priced distillates from those of lower price; maxi-mum yield of any desired distillate; lowest capital investment in refining equipment; lowest cost of operation and maintenance, and the best adaptability and flexibility of the same refinery equipment for handling crudes of widely varying characteristics. The first two items mentioned, separation and yields of distillates are determined by efficiency of fractionating equipment,. Discussion in this paper is chiefly concerned with oil-heating equipment, combustion and furl economy. It has long been well known that velocity plays a very important part in all heat transfer systems. Any betterment in specific transfer. rates in such systems must. always involve velocity. Realizing this fact, IV decided to adopt as a basic principle, the employment of energy to impart velocity required for high transfer rates through a heating diaphragm, and our method of modernizing obsolete shell stills is founded on this principle. Mechanical energy is usually cheap and its rational rspcntliture is returned in the form of greatly increased heat transfer rates, on both oil and gas sides of the sheet. Certainly there is nothing new in this principle, the only novelty being that of our peculiar method of application On the oil side (Fig. I) use is made of a centrifugal pump to jet the oil against the heated sheet thereby creating a high velocity sheet flow over the entire fired area. It may be said that the history of gold in the Black Hills begins with one of South Dakota's most. interesting relics, the so-called Thoen Stone, now in the Adams Memorial Hall at Deadwood. This slab of reddish sandstone, about 14 in. square, was found in by Louis and Ivan Thoen, at the base of Lookout Mountain, near Spearfish, a town in the northern foothills of the Black Hills uplift. Both sides of the stone bear clearly legible inscriptions. One side reads: Came to these hills in 1833. Seven of us, De Lacompt, Ezra Kind, G. W. Wood, T. Brown, R. Kent, Wm. King, Indian Crow. All ded but me, Ezra Kind. Killed by Indians beyond the high hills. Got our gold June 1834. On the reverse side: Got all the gold we could carry. Our ponys all got by the Indians. I hav lost iny gun and nothing to eat, and Indians hunting me. Attempts were made to trace these men. Relatives of Brown were found in Missouri, and it was learned that he had left for the West in 1832, with one Kent. Kind's relatives were also found, and stated that he had started West the same year. None of them had been heard from since their departure. So Kind failed to get out with "all the gold we could carry"; 15 years later California became the center of the first great gold rush, and the Hills waited 40 years for their gold to be rediscovered. It is interesting to speculate on what might have been "the course of Empire" had this little group won through. The history of Dakota, of Montana, indeed, of all the Northwest, might have been very different. When, late in 1875, the goldseekers arrived, they passed quickly northward from the first discovery near Custer, and soon were established on Deadwood Creek, along which, as well as for short distances above the mouths of its tributary streams, Blacktail and Bobtail, placer operations went forward vigorously. These placers were near the northern outcrop of the Homestake ore-body. Their gold was partly derived from this, perhaps in greater quantity from the erosion of the conglomerate or cement deposits, of Potsdam time, themselves a "fossil placer" or beach deposit formed by

WHEN starting a series of experiments on the use of powdered coal in lead blast furnaces to replace coke, I realized that in copper smelting the problem is simpler because the sulfur recovers the copper in the form of matte. In lead smelting there are greater difficulties because a reducing atmosphere must be maintained in the active, zone corresponding to each tuyere in order to get the best recovery of lead. Therefore, the feed of powdered coal must be quite regular, uniform and under control. The molten products issuing from the taphole are the resultant of the work of all the tuyeres and it can readily be con-ceived that one part of the furnace may be forming slag with a higher lead content than the slag formed in other parts of the furnace. At first, we used only one tuyere situated on the back of the furnace. This was for the purpose of getting all of our regulations under the regular operating conditions. We tried every known system of feed and found they were not dependable and our present system was finally worked out, and so far as we know, is the only working system that will give uniformly good saving in lead blast furnaces. We placed a Bristol self-recording thermometer on the feed floor. This gives a 24-hr. continuous record of the temperature of the gases leaving the furnace. We put a self-recording gage on the "15-lb." air used in the injector. A second recording Bristol gage was put on the low-pressure air (40 oz.). I realized that it was necessary that we should know the exact weight of coal going into each tuyere and that it should 'be under observation at all times. L. W. Kirk was assigned to the problem and developed the open sight feed and the distributor, so that we now have the coal being fed into each tuyere in sight of the men in charge. We have an apothecary's balance beside the furnace, and the operator takes the pan and inserts it under the stream of falling powdered coal for one minute, and places the pan on the scale, the other scale pan having weights indicating the desired amount to be fed to each tuyere per minute.

lHE general constitution of a number of metal-lead telluride and metal-tin telluride systems has recently been studied in an effort designed to furnish background information for the study of degradation mechanisms on junctions between thermoelectric power generation materials and metals.1"4 This paper reports further results of that effort. It was found that cobalt-lead telluride constitutes a stable pseudobinary section through the ternary Co-Pb-Te system. Materials used in the study were lead and tellurium of semiconductor-grade purity (American Smelting and Refining Corp., 99.999+ pet). Cobalt (Johnson Matthey & Co., 99.999 pet purity) was used in the form of slices cut from rods of 5 mm diam. Twenty- gram charges of the alloys were melted in evacuated quartz ampoules. Thermal analysis, as described previously,2'3 and metallographic and X-ray diffraction methods (Debye-Scherrer photographs) were used as investigative tools. Substantial difficulties were encountered in polishing, as reported previously for the lead telluride-iron system.3 A number of different etches were used, including dilute aqua regia, Murakami solution, an etch containing copper nitrate,3 and HC1-HNO3-acetic acid-water mixtures. AT the Wednesday morning session on Mine Ven-tilation, D. Harrington's report of the committee on metal mine ventilation was presented. He said the only paper which had been received was one from Nevada, although a number had been promised. Mr. Harrington gave instances from his experience where it had cost less to operate ventilating fans during idle periods in mines than the expense of replacing timber, which was destroyed by fungus during the period when the mines were not ventilated. He referred particu-larly to a metal mine in Michigan and a copper mine in the Southwest where this condition had been found in parallel tunnels, one of which had been ventilated after work had ceased and the other had not been. Mr. Harrington also referred to the fumes after blasting operations in mines operating in large bodies of sul-fide ores. By installing mechanical ventilating devices, these conditions had been greatly improved. He re-ferred also to a recent instance where an ignition of sulfide ore-dust had resulted in an explosion which killed three men and burned a fourth severely. Methane had been found in some gold mines and also in tunnels for city water-supply, and as a result coal-mine inspec-tion methods had been adopted. In one instance the contractor had changed from 40 per cent gelatine ex-plosive to a permissible explosive. A daily gas sample was taken. Nitrogen had been found in some of the mines, and CO, gas had been found in some of the Cripple Creek mines where a fan had been installed to maintain pres-sure on the working faces. It was found by experiment that the oxygen was absorbed by the rock particles, which led to a relatively greater percentage of CO. Coal-mine splitting ventilating methods had been used in some places. Miners' consumption had been made compensable in Ontario, and there is a large threat-ened charge now standing against metal mine oper-ators in the Province of Ontario. Mr. Harrington re-ferred to some of the literature, especially the recent book on ventilation by W. S. Weeks of the University of California. He suggested, however, that a better title for the book would have been "The Physics and Mechanics of Metal Mine Ventilation," since it was especially valuable in this field.

Uranium deposits in the Spokane Indian Reservation, as well as those around Mt. Spokane, are essentially low grade, much of the ore containing less than 0.2 pct U808. The Mining Experiment Station of the Division of Industrial Research, State College of Washington, has been engaged in intensive research on the amenability of these low grade ores to froth flotation. The results: successful flotation of autinite, chief mineral constituent. At the outset of this work the goal was a concentrate of 1 pct U308 with a 90 pct recovery from ores containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8. Most of the work has been done on argillite ore from the Midnight mine on the Spokane Indian Reservation. The goal has not been attained using this ore, but samples of the granite ore from Mt. Spokane yielded successful results. For example, a concentrate containing 11.2 pct U308 was produced from a Mt. Spokane high grade ore containing 1.27 pct U3O8 with a recovery of 97.8 pct. Another Mt. Spokane ore yielded a concentrate of 5.0 pct U3O8 from an ore containing 0.13 pct U3O8, with a recovery of 85 pct. This same ore gave a recovery of 93.5 pct when the grade of concentrate was reduced to 2.0 pct.

C.-Do you know anything about the character of that clay as to organic matter? H. RIES, Ithaca, N. Y.-No; it is a dark brownish clay, sandy in its nature. The brownish coloring is probably due to organic matter. Some lignite is also present. DONALD W. Ross.*-I have worked at the plant under consideration. I have not seen Mr. Farnham's paper; but in answering the question as to the organic matter, I might say there is practically no organic material scattered through the shale. There are, however, several layers of carbonaceous shale and rather low-grade coal interbedded with the formation. There are two very serious drawbacks-one which threatens to shut down the plant and another which merely means the expenditure of money. The first is taking care of the sediment from the washing away of the overburden. The government is doing extensive work at different points about Lake Washington with a view to creating a fresh-water harbor for Seattle. I understand that they keep at the Denny-Renton people to keep the channel of Cedar River clear. The Denny-Renton Co. can hardly help filling up the channel so long as they continue their hydraulic work, so this is probably one of their most serious problems. The other is this: There is a large percentage of what I should call micaceous shale or sandstone-a sandstone which contains a large amount of light-colored mica. Of course only a limited amount of this can be used in the manufacture of paving brick. As they shoot down the bank after the overburden of gravel and loam is washed away, these large boulders of micaceous sandstone come down. The strata have apparently been crushed where the clay pit is located so that the exact formation cannot be readily determined. These pieces of sandstone, 5 or 6 ft. in diameter, have to be blasted and removed from the shale. They bother both in the open pit and in the tunnel mining. In the tunnel mining of the shale blocks frequently cover the holes in the roof of the tunnel through which the shale is loaded into cars.

THE morning session on non-metallic minerals was opened briefly by the chairman, Oliver Bowles, giving the usual instructions and then turning immediately to the introduction of the speakers. "Min-ing and Preparation of the St. Peter Sandstone in' Arkansas" by D. D. Dunkin was first presented by W. M. Weigel, mining technologist for the Missouri Pacific R. R. The paper covered a discussion of the geology of the sandstone, correlating it with the sand-stones at Klondike, Mo., and at Ottawa, III. Its physical appearance, structural characteristics and thickness; the mining methods, blasting, loading, haulage and classification were taken up. A series of slides aided in clarifying the details. The discussion consisted of questioning Mr. Weigel on operating details. The second paper, "Geology and Mining of Diaspore and Flint Fire-Clays of Missouri," written by H. S. McQueen, geologist with the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines, and C. R. Forbes, professor of mining, Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, was presented by Mr. Forbes. It thoroughly covered the geology, stressing the peculiar sink formations in which all diaspore clay deposits of the region occur. The crudeness of the mining methods was mentioned and believed justifiable because of the small size of the indi-vidual deposits. It was stated that the diaspore and flint clay deposits of Missouri were confined to an area 60 mi. square and it was found in a survey that the average deposit had dimensions comparable to the fol-lowing: 100 ft. long, 75 ft. wide and 50 ft. deep. The largest deposit found was 800 ft. long. 500 ft. wide and 20 ft. deep. It is estimated that the known reserve of clays is from 750.000 to 1,500,000 tons. Mr. Forbes stressed the fact that in mining clays the major problem is entirely one of sorting. This is done under the supervision of a pit foreman trained to make this classification by eye. The mine-run clays are sepa-rated into diaspore clay ranging in alumina content from 70 to about 85 per cent, first grade Burly clay 00 to 70 per cent, and Flint clay 52 to 60 per cent. Discussion of the paper consisted in questioning Pro-fessor Forbes on labor. cost, haulage, drilling, and geology.

Discussion of the paper of J. K. FURST, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in" Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2493 to 2514. W..McA. JOHNSON, New York, N. Y.-On discussing this paper I am open to the criticism of "bringing coals to Newcastle," as I, a zinc man, am bringing new ideas on steel to Pittsburgh. But still the view of an outsider can be valuable to the insider. Any multistage process, where each apparatus operates on its particular part of the work at a high efficiency, constitutes an advance in the state of art. But in multiplicity there can be complication and ensuing loss and inefficiency. The duplex steel process is not the pronounced success which was predicted for it by its adherents, for several of such plants have reverted to plain open-hearth methods. If we regard broadly refining processes, such as the Bessemer, open-hearth, puddling, copper refining, lead cupelling, nickel refining, we find that in general refining processes are intermittent and 'concentration processes are continuous. (This generalization I believe to be original with me; it was communicated to Dr. E. F. Roeber, editor, and appeared as an editorial in Metallurgical and Chemical Engineering, March, 1905.) Where we desire primarily quality in a metallurgical operation we must put a batch of metal in the furnace, work on it until we get it to the required purity, test it, and take it out; whereas, if we desire primarily quantity we shove ore into a furnace and smelt it as fast as possible, allowing conditions to make a non-uniform product provided only we get tonnage. From general commercial principles, I believe that the weak point of the duplex process is that the operation is not a money maker unless the plant is kept at. 90 to 95 per cent. of its rated capacity, or unless the Bessemerizing is done so often that it is practically continuous. For in some manner the operation should be made continuous and the control on the tonnage should be commercially flexible. The commercial rigidity of having to control purity exactly increases operating costs without a corresponding gain. Conversely, the chief reason for failure of "steel from ore direct" is that it makes a final operation continuous, which should be naturally intermittent.

W. E. WRATHER, Wichita Falls, Tex. (written discussion*).-The appearance of Mr. Brokaw?s with-the chemical composition of "paraffin dirt" will be welcomed by oil geologists who have worked in the Gulf Coast district. It is to be hoped that it will lead to a discussion of the subject which will throw some light on the relation this peculiar substance bears to the occurrence of oil deposits. The problem of locating oil pools in advance of drilling is at the best a very intangible matter in the district along the Gulf Coast, and it is therefore desirable to make the most of any clew which may be of the least assistance to this end. Geologists have been familiar with "paraffin dirt" for a number of years, and have informally discussed its value as a surface indication of oil. But doubtless owing largely to the fact that they have been unable to define its exact composition, very little information has appeared in print on the subject. The presence of this baffling and somewhat indeterminate substance is now quite generally accepted as one of the most reliable indications of a gas seepage. The question is whether paraffin dirt necessarily indicates that the escaping gas is an emanation from an oil deposit, or whether it merely indicates that marsh gas (urethane) has here escaped from its source in "the abundant decomposing vegetation entombed in the sediments of the old Mississippi Embayment, and the Gulf Coastal Plain. The presence of this material has been relied upon to a great extent, both by oil producers and geologists, in the location of wildcat wells, since the discovery that it was associated with gas seepages. It is quite true that other surface indications were often present at such localities, but if, in addition, paraffin dirt could be found in the vicinity, this fact was accepted as the final justification for drilling a test well, despite the fact that no one seemed to understand its chemical composition or to know why it should be associated with oil. In fact, for a long time it has generally been accepted that the name is a misnomer, that very little, if any, paraffin is present in it, or, for that matter, any other known fraction of crude oil.

BY the courtesy of Mr. Charles W. Jenks, of Boston, one of the owners of this interesting mine, I am enabled to lay before the Institute a suite of specimens, illustrating its peculiar formation and the paragenesis of mineral species which it presents; and a recent brief visit and rapid reconnoissance of the locality permit me to supplement this exhibition with a general description, based upon personal observation. The mine is situated upon the Culsagee Fork of the Tennessee River, in Macon County, North Carolina, a few miles from Franklin. The most practicable route by which it can at present be visited is by wagon (or preferably on horseback) from Seneca City, S. C., a station on the Charlotte and Atlanta Air Line Railroad. The itinerary is as follows: to Walhalla,* nine miles; Walhalla to Highlands, twenty-nine miles; Highlands to the Culsagee, fourteen miles. By passing the night at or near Highlands, the mine can be reached and examined and the return to Highlands made on the second day; and the round trip, if performed in the saddle, can be completed in three days from Seneca City. It is not easy, with due regard to steed and rider, to do it in less time. The rough and precipitous mountain roads do not permit rapid travel ; and the journey is at best a fatiguing one. But its slight hardships are overpaid by the stimulating effect of the climate and the great beauty of the scenery, both of which are destined to become more widely known than at present, to seekers for health and pleasure. Indeed the town of Highlands, already named, is almost entirely made up of northern immigrants, attracted by these advantages and by the inducement of cheap land for agriculture and stock-raising. The Culsagee or Sugartown fork of the Tennessee traverses the belt of ancient crystalline schists on the west flank of the Blue Ridge. This belt abounds in valuable minerals. Among those of the nonmetallic class may be mentioned graphite, soapstone, serpentine, ashes- * A branch or cross railroad is in operation as far as Walhalla ; but the single daily train runs at an hour not convenient for this expedition ; and Seneca City is probably the best starting-point. At all events, I obtained there an excellent mount for the trip.
