THE Cliffs Shaft mine of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., located in the city of Ishpeming, Mich., is the largest producer of hard hematite ore on the Marquette iron range. The two shafts, A and B, lying 820 ft. (250 m.) apart on the east-west trend of the ore formation, were sunk in the early eighties, and, except for four years, have been steady producers of iron ore. Their location, on a hill overlooking the general offices of the company on the one side and the city of Ishpeming on the other, has made the shaft houses landmarks. In the spring of 1919, as the old wooden shaft houses had become shaky and out of line, and would soon be unsafe, it was necessary to replace them with the least possible delay. Three plans of construction were, therefore, considered: To replace the old shaft houses by somewhat similar structures made of wood; to use steel and radically change the design; or to build reinforced-concrete shaft houses outside of the wooden structures, completely enclosing them. The first plan was disapproved, because it is anticipated that the mine will have a long life and the proximity of other buildings makes the danger from fire rather great. Delay in receiving material, and the necessity for closing the shafts during erection, were other factors in the situation. The second plan was disapproved on account of the high cost of steel, slow delivery, and interference with hoisting during the period of erection. The presence near one of the shafts of a large bed of hard gravel suitable for concrete made, the cost of the third plan considerably less than the second, and little, if any, delay in hoisting was expected. Our expectations in this regard' were fully realized. Furthermore, the work could be done by unskilled labor, which was plentiful, and the erection could be quickly started. When the proposition was submitted to Mr. W. G. Mather, president of the company, he recommended that, on account of the prominence of the buildings due to their location, an effort should be made to combine in the design as far as practicable something of architectural beauty. The new 4800-ton fine-grinding plant at the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines property at Timmins, in the Porcupine district of northern Ontario, went into operation in November 1937, and represents the culmination of an experimental program. The plant is a moderately low rectangular building of hollow tile on a steel frame, large enough to house four 7 by 15-ft. ball mills, with a 12 by 27-ft. classifier beside each mill. At one end is space for the addition of another mill and classifier or a mill and classifier for the regrinding of table concentrates. This regrinding is now done in the old grinding department of the main mill building. Also within the new building are the four 6-in. sand pumps for lifting the product from the low-dis-charge ball mills up to the classifier feed launders and the containers and appurtenances of a complete dust-collecting system. Together with the usual overhead crane, these constitute the major units of equipment within the new plant. The location is at the lower end of the main mill buildings toward the old tailings pond, now so neatly leveled off and sodded to rival the very best of our own W.P.A. projects. Close by the new grinding plant is a large dome-shaped structure—the new fine-ore bin designed and built by Mr. Longmore and the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs. There are four separate automatically loaded inclined belt conveyors leading up from the bottom of the bin to the grinding plant. Each belt is equipped with a recording weightometer, in the grinding building. The whole structure and the machinery within it give the impression of permanence and a carefully integrated design with close attention to details, giving the operators every advantage for consistently good work. The many ideas and opinions behind this achievement were all ably organized and executed by the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs, and not a few were directly initiated by them. The earliest mention of the sulphur deposits in what is now Culberson County, Texas, seems to be contained in " Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad Route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, United States War Department, 1853-54." Captain John Pope (he was not commissioned Captain until 1856) had charge of one of the divisions of the Survey. In his report on the geology of the route, William P. Blake noted the analysis of a greenish earthy powder from the bed of Delaware Creek, at the springs, which contained 18.28 per cent. of free sulphur. The report states: "From the chemical examination of the waters of the spring, by Dr. Booth, it appears that chloride of sodium is the principal solid ingredient, but considerable quantities of sulphide of sodium are present. ***** The waters from the springs examined by Dr. Booth were alkaline, but it is possible that some of the springs are acid; and in this case the precipitation of sulphur would ensue on the mixture of the acid waters with those charged with alkaline sulphurets and the origin of the deposits of sulphur would be thus explained." This is the first reference to the existence of sulphur in that region, the first mention of the character of the water found there and the first suggestion as to the origin of the deposits. The possibility of the existence of acid waters was confirmed by E. M. Skeats, nearly 50 years later.' In this publication, Skeats says that the water from the sulphur deposits in Section 11, Block 114, Township 6, contains 79.08 grains of free sillphuric acid per gallon. This locality is about 13 miles (21 km.) south . of Delaware Creek and about 35 miles (56 km.) east of the Delaware Springs. The next published reference to the existence of sulphur in Trans-Pecos. Texas is in the Pirst Annual Report of the Geological Survey of Texas, 1889, page 226, where W. H. von Streeruwitz mentions that sulphur is found in that region, but gives no further information. ZONE refining, as developed by W. G. Pfann,1 has been used extensively for the purification of semiconductors. This method has made it possible to obtain the extremely high purity material necessary for the transistor industry. It has also been utilized to some extent for the purification of relatively low-melting-point metals. However, very little attention has been given to reactive, high-melting-point materials, with the exception of silicon. For this element, it has been necessary to use the floating zone technique in order to avoid contamination from the crucible containing the melt. The method is one in which a narrow molten zone is formed in a vertical rod by induction heating. The molten zone is supported between the two solid sections of the rod by surface tension. It is then moved longitudinally along the rod in order to effect a redistribution of solute. This technique has an advantage over the horizontal boat method, since crucible contamination is avoided. It has the disadvantage of being a much more difficult technique than zone refining in a crucible. Furthermore, it is necessarily a slow process, since only one zone at a time can be formed. However, the floating zone process offers a means of obtaining high-purity metals that are either not available, or can only be obtained in powder or pellet form as the result of complex chemical or electrochemical methods. It should be emphasized that the process is not effective in removing all impurity elements. Those that cannot be redistributed in an ingot during zone melting must be removed by some other means. Very little is known of the prope~ties of very high purity reactive metals such as iron, titanium, zirconium, beryllium, etc. It is quite likely that trace elements in such metals can affect their properties drastically. Therefore, one of the primary objectives of this work is to study the properties of metals which have been obtained in the purest form available and then zone refined. THE history of the development of our great iron and steel industry has been recorded in many publications, not the least important of which are the TRANSACTIONS of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. During the life of the Institute, of less than 60 years, the annual production of pig iron in the United States has increased more than 23 times. Such a rate of growth may seem small when compared with that of the automotive industry, which has increased 100 times in the last 20 years, or when compared with the growth of other industries of recent birth. The comparison appears less unfavorable, however, when the fact is taken into consideration that the iron and steel industry has existed on the earth in some form for thousands of years. The trade journals, the Department of Commerce and technical societies keep us currently informed concerning technical and corporate developments and the statistics of the American iron and steel industry. Merely to describe the high spots of the industry as it exists today would require a book of no small size. It involves the utilization of about 900,000 people, the payment of $1,400,000,000 in annual wages and salaries, the-investment of $14,000,000,000, the mining annually of 70,000,000 tons of iron ore, 15,000,000 tons of limestone, and 120,000,000 tons of coal. It results in the production of 40,000,000 long tons of pig iron and 50,000,000 long tons of steel ingot. In addition, the industry includes ownership and operation of railroads and steamship lines, the production of cement, timber, coke, gas, by-products, and many other activities. The leading part played by the iron and steel industry in promoting the confidence of the public in corporations and corporate management is well known. The industry has also provided worthy examples of vertical integration and mass production. The social activities within the industry have been no small factor in promoting the fuller development and greater happiness of the American working man-and his family. J. C. WRIGHT.-The problem of organizing and maintaining a vocational class for those employees who are engaged in the mining industry depends on several most important factors. The first is the sympathetic cooperation of employer and employee; the second is to find the subject matter that must be presented to these men; and the third is to find the instructor who can present that subject matter. This is perhaps the most difficult, for we usually find a man who knows the material that is to be presented but is not a teacher or does not know how to organize his material. The man must know the subject matter from the standpoint of absolute contact with industry in order to be a successful teacher. I have come into contact with two kinds of schools organized in connection with mining occupations. In one type the instruction leans very largely toward elementary subjects, arithmetic, reading and writing and spelling; it is not of such a character as to help or improve the working man in his occupation in the sense that we are attempting when we speak of vocational education. In the other type of school, an engineer is usually employed as a teacher. He immediately begins to give the things with which he is most familiar and the instruction becomes such as only those who possess a high-school or college education, perhaps, are able to receive. In between these two schools is the school we are trying to, promote, a school that will meet the needs of those employed. MARGUERITE W. This vocational education can do; for it can supply many of those deficiencies in upbringing and. environment that make for the discontent and restlessness of our varied classes of unskilled labor: the Anglo-Saxon mountaineer; the Southern negroes who have crossed Mason & Dixon's line by the thousands, "searching satisfaction for our minds;" and the still greater number who have sought across the sea America, "the promised land.

Introductory.—There are many interesting and important events connected with the petroleum problem. The remarkable men who conceived 'the thought of transporting petroleum by pipe line, conserving the byproducts of the commodity, and conducting extended investigation and research whereby the flash point of the oil was raised, its cost reduced and its supply assured, are deserving of the gratitude of this nation. It was primarily the success attained by Captain Lucas, after his comprehensive search for oil in Texas and Louisiana, that was the impelling cause which prompted the Navy Department to conduct the extensive series of liquid fuel-oil tests that were made from 1901 to 1903. The sensational discovery of oil at Spindle top made a deep impression upon Rear Admiral George W. Melville, then Engineer-in-Chief of the Navy, and the discovery of the vast oil field in Texas convinced him that, within a generation, if not within a decade, crude petroleum was going to play a very important part in warfare, and that the commodity might possibly develop into a necessary munition of war. The United States' Commanding Position as a Petroleum Producer.— In the study of the various problems relating to the world's production of crude petroleum, the position of the United States is one of commanding importance, whether viewed from the industrial or the military aspect. The present yield of this country is practically double that of the rest of the world, and, in view of the productive and prospective fields possessed by various countries, together with the comprehensive and exhaustive search that has been made throughout the world for petroleum, it is extremely probable that this lead will be maintained for the next decade. As regards the character of the crude-oil yield of different countries, America possesses the greater part of the supply that contains a paraffine base, and therefore a considerable portion at least of the American product produces the best illuminant. Of all the crude-oil distillates, kerosene is in many respects thc most important, and the Appalachian product for this purpose is favored, particularly in the Far East, above that of any other petroleum yield of the world.

THE combination of high strength and corrosion resistance of cold-worked 18 Cr, 8 Ni steel has been advantageously utilized for some time, particularly in aircraft and rail car structures. There are, however, certain limitations on the use of such materials because the high strengths can be obtained only by cold-working, limiting the available products to sheets, strip, wire and tubes. The authors sought to overcome these limitations by resorting to precipitation-hardening, which has been used so successfully in nonferrous metallurgy but only to a limited extent in iron-base alloys. Accomplishment of this objective not only overcame the limitations, but also effected certain improvements in mechanical and other properties. This paper is an account of the development by Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation of a precipitation-hardening 18-8 stainless steel (called Stainless W? and tentatively identified as type 322). A description is given of its composition and metallurgical characteristics, heat-treatment, physical and mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW STEEL For a considerable length of time the authors were unable to determine the mechanism of the precipitation-hardening process that had been noted by Ffield 18,19 in 18-8 Ti or 18-8 Cb after cold-working and reheating to moderately elevated temperatures. All known variables were exhaustively studied, but with little success. However, results began to indicate that chemical composition was the most important variable, particularly the ratio of austenite-forming to ferrite-forming elements. The investigators 'then focused their attention upon the composition, and, in particular, upon the element titanium and its mode of alloying in the presence of other elements. A heat was obtained that could not be brought to the softness level of annealed 18-8. The response to cold-straining and aging* was very marked by previous standards, and, more important, cold-straining was found to be entirely unnecessary to produce the precipitation-hardening effect. The chemical composition of this heat was: C, 0.06 per cent; Mn, 0.54; P, 0.016; S, 0.016; Si, o.58; Ni, 7.28; Cr, 17.6o; Ti, 0.90; Al, 0.17. The present paper was suggested by the paper read by Mr. R. W. Hunt at the New York Meeting, in February last, on rail-sections (Trans., xvii., p. 778)) in the discussion of which I brought forward some of the facts and observations here stated. Professional duties having prevented me from writing out my part of that discussion in time for its publication in the volume containing Mr. Hunt's paper, I take the opportunity to present it in separate form and greater fulness. The striking features of the series of rail-sections submitted by Mr. Hunt are their shallow heads and heavy bases. In these respects they are quite similar to the section of the 80-1b. rail, which I designed in 1883 to meet the requirements of the traffic of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. Before the adoption of the 80-1b. rail, this road had modified its 65-1b. section from a shallow head with rounding sides and quite heavy base to one having a deep head and thin base. All the leading railroads had changed from the earlier sections of steel rails to those having deep heads and thin bases, conforming to the recommendations of the Committee on Rails of the American Society of Civil Engineers. It is but proper to say that the committee's investigations upon the wear of rails were made upon the rails manufactured under a practice quite different from that which obtained after the committee's recommendations were carried into effect. The results in actual service have been contrary to what was expected. Fig. 1 shows my 80-1b. section of 1883. Before designing this rail I had taken, at different times, a series of diagrams of the condition of tracks, with my car, on the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad, all of the New England railroads, and all but one of the trunk lines. My diagrams gave me an opportunity which could not otherwise have been obtained to see the wear of great numbers of sections of rails under widely varying conditions of traffic.

In July 1041, the Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Boulder City, Nevada, began a study of methods of producing magnesium metal from magnesium oxide, with particular emphasis upon the direct use of magnesium oxide in a molten chloride electrolyte. The program was extended to include pilot-plant study of chemical methods for the preparation of pure magnesia from dolomites and magnesites. Preliminary work on the production of magnesia from dolomite was done with the cooperation of Kobert D. Pike and the Harbison-Walker Refractories Co. These investigatipns included a cooperative arrangement whereby the Bureau tested certain steps of the Harbison-Walker-Pike process. The process finally developed by the Bureau includes the precarbonation mixing step of the H.W.P. flowsheet prepared by Mr. Pike. Two magnesium-reduction plants using MgO as a source of magnesium were being constructed in the West, and they enormously stimulated interest in various dolomite deposits as possible sources of the magnesia needed by them. This paper describes one phase of this program—the operation of a pilot plant for producing cell-grade magnesia from dolomite from Sloan, Nevada. The process developed for this purpose is an adaptation of a well-known process first proposed by Clossonl and modified by others,2"1 involving the use of calcium chloride and carbon dioxide. It is based on the following chemical reactions: MgCl2 + Ca(OH)2 = CaCl2 + Mg(OH)2 [1] Mg(OH)4 + CaCU + CO2 = MgCl2 + CaCO, + H2O [2] The first reaction proceeds almost completely to the right because of the much greater solubility of calcium hydroxide as compared with magnesium hydroxide. Under equilibrium conditions, when only the four components shown in reaction I are involved, the ratio of magnesium to calcium in solution, according to solubility-product relationship, will be: This reaction is the basis of present commercial processes for recovering magnesium from sea water and dolomite. The second reaction is, in effect, a reversal of the first reaction produced by adding COz. This reaction also proceeds nearly to completion, the solubility relationship being: Ca where P indicates partial pressure of COz, in atmospheres.

[Secretary's Note.—The following notes, arranged and edited in this office, but not yet revised by the author, were placed at my disposal with much modest hesitation (due to their incomplete and fragmentary character), upon my earnest request, and my argument that such recent and trustworthy data concerning a new and important mining industry ought not to be withheld from our Transactions, simply because they are not sufficient to constitute a complete academic treatise on the subject. This argument is recommended to the attention of many other members, who are waiting for the opportunity to contribute something "monumental" to our Transaclions. In a number of instances, death has nullified this ambition, and the intended "monumental " contribution has turned out to be an obituary notice by the Secretary, instead of a valuable record of the professional experieuce thus hopelessly lost to the world.—R. H.] The official publications of the Russian Government give fairly complete statistics of the dredges operated in the Empire; and in a recent English bluebook, Mr. Cook's report on Siberian Trade presents a brief account of dredging in Siberia. The data in Table I. (not given by Mr. Cook) have been taken from the Gold Mining Messenger (Russian) for July, 1905. These interesting statistics, though incomplete, show that the Yenisei dredges are working on poor ground and yield small returns. According to report, but few yield a profit exceeding 10 per cent. per annum on the capital invested. In the summers of 1904 and 1905, I traveled in the Urals as far north as lat. 61° N., long. 61" E., on the Losva river, a part of the vast system of the Ob river. This clear-water stream starts from the summits of the Urals at an altitude of 4,000 ft., and flows through a flat country, densely wooded with larch, spruce, pine, fir, birch and poplar. The river is full offish, and is navigable for good-sized steamers as far as Ivdell. Winter lasts from early November to late April, the temperature ranging from -60" F. to a summer maximum of 90° F. AT the present time, the coal industry is greatly interested in any method or machine that will cut the cost of producing a ton of coal, while at the same time producing a product of quality and grade suitable to the customer. Comparatively new and, as yet, little known, auger mining is proving a profitable method of coal recovery. It may be used for the production of low-cost, high-quality coal with equal success from both the hard-to-mine seams, those with banded impurities and bad roof conditions, and the more easily mined seams as classified according to conventional mining methods. A number of units are now in operation and production information is available that should be of particular interest to coal operators and of general interest to anyone associated with the coal-mining industry. Auger mining refers to coal extraction with large size augers capable of drilling to great depths and having a high capacity. Consideration of the equipment and methods used in drilling an ordinary shot-hole will give a picture of auger mining on a smaller scale. At present, auger mining is used largely for recovery of coal from the highwall after strip mining becomes uneconomical because of the type and the thickness of the overburden which must be moved. Coal augers have many of the advantages of present continuous mining machines, along with many more. The four distinct operations of conventional mining-—cutting, drilling, shooting, and loading— are eliminated and replaced by the combined operation of boring and conveying of the coal. The coal recovery auger is an adaptation of the horizontal rock drill used for drilling shot-holes to shatter and loosen overburden in strip mining operations. During the war the Becker County Sand and Gravel Co. of Summersville, W. Va., experimented with drilling coal with 6 and 9-in. rock augers. The results led to the successive development of the 20, 24, 30 and the 36-in. machines, the latter having appeared in the coal fields within the past six months. The value of the earth resistivity method in groundwater studies in Illinois has long been recognized. Owing to the sharp electrical contrasts between sand and gravel deposits and glacial till, alluvial silt or underlying shale, much of the earth resistivity prospecting has been of a relatively elementary nature and has been highly successful. Approximately 90 pct of earth resistivity interpretations by the State Geological Survey have been accurate for practical purposes. Four studies involving fairly simple geologic situations are presented in this paper as typical cases. FOR the past 20 years electrical earth resistivity exploration has been used in Illinois in many phases of study undertaken by the State Geological Survey, chiefly in locating and outlining deposits of water-bearing sand and gravel from which to obtain ground water for municipal and industrial supplies. At least 43 municipalities in the state derive their total water supply from deposits of sand and gravel discovered by resistivity methods. These deposits occur in both Quaternary and preglacial valleys and within much of the glacial drift which covers a large portion of the state. In recent years there has been much demand from rapidly growing municipalities for help from the Illinois Geological Survey to extend existing well fields. Water supplies for many and varied industries constitute a considerable portion of the Survey's studies. The diminishing need of water supplies for railroads has 'been accompanied by an increasing demand by the oil industry for water for secondary recovery programs. The instruments used by the Illinois Geological Survey follow closely the commutated direct current circuits developed by O. H. Gish and W. J. Rooney' using the Wenner2 electrode configuration. More recently replacement of the hand-driven commutator by a synchronous vibrator has led to increased ease of operation and accuracy. Continuing improvement of equipment and technique has led to many changes in the instruments, but the operating theory remains the same. In the field operation at a selected station, four electrodes are set at equal distances in the ground 6 to 10 in. deep, in a straight line. A 16 to 20-cycle current is applied to the two outside steel electrodes

Gold was discovered in the Sierra Nevada by J. W. Marshall on Jan. 2, 1848. The town of Grass Valley soon sprang up and contained several stores in 1849; but the population of the town has always reflected the fluctuations in quartz mining. Gold-bearing quartz was found on Gold Hill in September 1850, and in the next two years most of the quartz-bearing veins in the vicinity were located. At first, the quartz was crushed in mortars with spring poles; the IIuff Co. took out $20,000 in this manner during the winter and spring of 1851. The first mill was put up in January, 1851. In 1866, there were in Grass Valley 248 stamps, crushing 71,420 tons of ore with an average yield of $30 to $35; in Nevada City, there were 142 stamps, crushing 14,200 tons, with an average value of $25. Rut in 1918, only two properties in this region, the Empire and the Korth Star, were producing Since then, there has been a revival of mining in the district and the following properties are being opened up: The Golden Center. Idaho-Maryland Mines Co., while the Su1tana is kept unmatered and work is going on in a half dozen mall propertics Mining Claims At the first meeting of miners in Grass Valley, Jan. 13. 1851, a plot :30 by 40 ft. was allowed for a claim, the boundaries in all cases being perpendicular. In 1852, the quartz miners in Nevada County deeided that "each prospector shall hereafter be entitled to 100 ft. on a quartz ledge or vein and the discoverer shall be allowed 100 ft. additional. Fach claim shall include all the dips, angles, and variations of the vcin." This rule was in force until replaced by the Federal mining laws of 1872; these allowed quartz claims to be 1500 ft along the vein, with all the dips, spurs, and angles, and to have a width of 600 ft. The Cliffs Shaft mine of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., located in the city of Ishpeming, Mich., is the largest producer of hard hematite ore on the Marquette iron range. The two shafts, A and B, lying 820 ft. (250 m.) apart on the east-west trend of the ore formation, were sunk in the early eighties, and, except for four years, have been steady producers of iron ore. Their location, on a hill overlooking the general offices of the company on the one side and the city of Ishpeming on the other, has made the shaft houses landmarks. In the spring of 1919, as the old wooden shaft houses had become shaky and out of line, and would soon be unsafe, it was necessary to replace them with the least possible delay. Three plans of construction were, therefore, considered: To replace the old shaft houses by somewhat similar structures made of wood; to use steel and radically change the design; or to build reinforced-conerete shaft houses outside of the wooden structures, completely enclosing them. The first plan was disapproved, because it is anticipated that the mine will have a long life and the proximity of other buildings makes the danger from fire rather great. Delay in receiving material, and the necessity for closing the shafts during erection, were other factors in the situation. The second plan was disapproved on account of the high cost of steel, slow delivery, and interference with hoisting during the period of erection. The presence near one of the shafts of a large bed of hard gravel suitable for concrete made the cost of the third plan considerably less than the second, and little, if any, delay in hoisting was expected. Our expectations in this regard were fully realized. Furthermore, the work could be done by unskilled labor, which was plentiful, and the erection could be quickly started. When the proposition was submitted to W. G. Mather, president of the company, he recommended that, on account of the prominence of the buildings due to their location, an effort should be made to combine in the design as far as practicable something of architectural beauty. There are two essentially different 'types of case-hardening processes; that using a dry mixture in which the object to be case-hardened is packed and kept for the necessary time at the necessary temperature, and the "liquid" proccss, employing a bath of fused salts into which the object is immersed and which by immediate contact case-hardens the surface of the article. The Shimer process belongs to the second class, and was a war emergency invention. Of the liquid melts used as baths, the most effective and most frequently used are melted potassium cyanide and melted sodium cyanide. These may be used either pure or mixed with salts that reduce the melting point and the percentage of .cyanide present. The use of these baths since 1914 has met many commercial difficulties because of the high price and frequent commercial scarcity of the cyanide salts; at present sodium cyanide has practically entirely displaced potassium cyanide. Another trouble is the danger to the workmen handling the cyanide salts, which are extremely poisonous, and the annoying and poisonous vapors or gases given off in the workshop, unless an effective system of hoods and ventilation is provided, so as to prevent the gases from the baths mixing with the air of the room. Porter W. Shimer, of Easton, Pa., has invented a substitute1 for the bath of melted cyanides which case-hardens with equal or greater facility and effectiveness, gives off no poisonous vapors, and costs for chemicals materially less than the cyanide costs in the previously used baths. The process has been in use over a year in a large American works and the following statement embodies the results of practical experience in the use and operation of the process. The Shimer liquid or melted bath consists of a mixture of easily fusible salts that do not possess case-hardening properties, into which is immersed fresh calcium eyanamid, which imparts to the bath case-hardening properties. The composition of the non-case-hardening salts appears rather immaterial. Good results have been obtained by using a mixture of sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and barium chloride in equal proportions by weight; also a mixture of one part sodium chloride

W. E. RUDER, Schenectady, N. Y.-In 1913 I presented a paper before this society on Grain Growth, and at that time it seemed to me that the only explanation for grain growth was that of critical strain. I do not think I published the photographs at the time, but I made some experiments on the effect of stretching sheets of metal. This allowed for fairly accurate determinations of the amount of cold deformation, At the time I worked-with silicon steel because one could see the change in grain growth with the naked eye. I stretched about 10-samples from 0.5 per cent. to 10 per cent., and, after heating to 1,050° C., I found that the maximum grain growth occurred at about 2 ½ per cent. cold deformation. This I designated "the critical strain" for maximum grain growth. About a year ago I talked with Prof. Jeffries, who explained to me his ideas of grain growth. It occurred to me that it would be a very easy thing to check the strain hypothesis against the strain and temperature hypothesis, if we took a certain number of these strips, strained exactly alike and heated to different temperatures; in that case the maximum grain growth ought to appear at a different percentage of deformation for each temperature. These experiments showed that there was, as Mr. Jeffries shows in his present paper, a decrease in germinative temperature with increased cold deformation. The samples were stretched from ½ to 8 per cent. and heated for 10 hr. in hydrogen. Samples were introduced into a furnace previously heated to temperature. A maximum grain growth was obtained at 5 per cent. deformation, when heated to 750° C.; at 2 ½ per cent. when heated to 800' C.; at 1 1/4 per cent., if heated at 950°C.; and at 5/8 per cent.. when heated at 1,100° C. This shows very clearly that the germinative temperature decreases with the increase in cold deformation. The growth was very much more marked, however, at the high temperature, i.e., the grain grew more rapidly and attained a much larger size than at lower temperature. "In the spring of 1927, six members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers met for dinner at the Chemists' Club in New York to discuss the possibility of setting up a committee within the Institute to further the current interest in the science of steelmaking. Attention to this subject had been crystallized by a symposium held by the Faraday Society in 1925. After a prolonged discussion, ranging from thermodynamics to slag conditioning, it was decided to approach the Institute with the request that a standing committee on "The Physical Chemistry of Steel Making" be set up. This committee proposed to promote scientific and practical papers on the subject, and was designed to cooperate with the Open Hearth Committee of the Institute in bringing scientific developments to the attention of open-hearth operators throughout the country. . . . "As the life of the [Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking] Committee lengthened and general interest in the technical phases of steelmaking grew, it .became evident that there was a distinct need for a book that might serve the open-hearth interests to better advantage than standard texts whose scope is necessarily wide and whose detailed exposition of the open-hearth process is, therefore, somewhat limited. With this thought in mind, the Committee, after some years of consideration and debate, embarked on the venture of writing a manuscript on 'Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking'." The foregoing paragraphs, taken from the introduction by C. H. Herty, Jr. to the first edition, well describe the circum- stances which led to the publication of “Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking” in the spring of 1944. The book consisted of nine- teen chapters contributed by twenty-three authors and edited by the staff of Alloys of Iron Research and T. S. Washburn, H; M. Larsen, and J. S. Marsh with Frank T. Sisco as consulting editor. The Engineering Foundation and the Open Hearth Steel Committee of the Iron and Steel Division, AIME, made financial grants; steel companies and other organizations supported the publication by contributing time and expenses of staff members in their capacity as authors or editors. More than a quarter of a century has passed since the introduction of the machine known as the Blake crusher, the invention of Eli W. Blake, of New Haven, Conn. Although originally designed for breaking stone for road-metal, its importance for crushing ores of the precious metals, and those of iron, copper, and zinc, as well as emery, phosphates, plaster, etc., mas soon recognized, and for many years its use has been world-wide, and its construction so well known that no special description of it is deemed necessary. Following its introduction, many different machines for the same purpose, containing the same essential features of upright convergent jaws, one of which is movable with respect to the other, hut having some slight modification of such movement (generally a rubbing motion) or of the non-essential method of imparting motion to one or both of the jaws, have been offered to the public for sale and use, but have, as a rule, in time disappeared from the market. If we seek for the reason of the success of the Blake crusher, aside from its simplicity of construction, we shall find it in the adherence to the principle of crushing by simple pressure and careful avoidance of attrition. In this lies the economy of power and of wearingsurfaces. To reduce any hard and brittle material to a fine powder by many different methods—by attrition, impact, or percussion—is a comparatively easy matter; but to accomplish this by the employment of either of the above-mentioned principles involves such a consumption of wearing-surface? (generally iron) or of power, that the numerous devices that have hitherto been presented to the public as solutions of the problem of fine crushing have proved utter and complete failures when tested with reference to the power employed and the wear of iron in doing their work..
