Delays in the completion of the alterations to the plant at the works of Messrs. Oliver Bros. and Phillips, in Pittsburgh, coupled with the increased demand for metal made from regular Bessemer pig, placing the firm many hundreds of tons behind in their deliveries, prevented Mr. Henry W. Oliver, Jr., from redeeming his promise to place his works at my disposal for further tests of high-phosphorus irons, until May 5th. Upon that date, I assumed charge of the operations in his steel-plant. Mr. Oliver had purchased Neshannock pig as a basis for a supply of phosphorus. My information is to the effect that this iron is made from low-grade Lake Superior ores and mill-cinder, the latter "ore" being utilized to about 40 per cent. of the total mixture. At all events the pig had quite as much phosphorus, and in as varying quantities, as the most exacting could desire. My experiments of last fall had well satisfied me as to the effect of from 0.35 to 0.55 per cent. of phosphorus in the Clapp Griffiths metal. Hence at this time my first trials were directed to

Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illus-trate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions.

Specitlrens of the Al-Ge eutectic alloy have been frozen unidivectionally at rates between 2.5 x 10-6 and 2.5 x 10-4 cm per sec and the structure examined by optical and X-ray methods. There is no epitaxial relationship between phases, the aluminum having random orientation and the germanium a preferred (011) fiber textuve. Lamellar colonies which are BINARY eutectic alloys occur between either silicon or germanium with the metals aluminum or silver. common in this alloy are constructed from axial and nonaxial (111) plates of germanium which are related by a variety of twin configurations. Irregular or globular regions of the microstructure are composed of continuous single crystals of each phase, the germanium being heavily twinned. There is limited solid solubility in these systems, and the eutectic phases all involve diamond cubic with fcc crystal structures. THE following paper aims to make a full explanation of the phenomena of rock jointing: It may be unnecessary to give any general description of what are termed joints in rocks, but Professor Geikie's clear and faithful generalizations are so illuminating that no excuse need be given. for introducing the following and other quotations into this paper "Almost all rocks are traversed by vertical or highly inclined divisional planes termed joints. These have been regarded as due in some way to contraction during consolidation (fissures of retreat) ; and this is no doubt their origin in innumerable cases. But, on the other hand, their frequent regularity and persistence across materials of very varying texture suggest rather the effects of internal pressure and movement within the crust." 1 General Explanation.-In this paper I show that the phenomenon of jointing may to a large extent be accounted for by the pressure of the water contained in the pores of the rock. To understand this, each constituent grain of the porous material may be considered to be separately compressed by the water which submerges it. As all the grains are held together by cohesion, the whole mass is contracted by this pressure. In an indefinitely extended mass, however, there must be a limit to the possible contraction without rupture, because the material is restrained from moving freely by other material around its boundaries. The mass of rock thus becomes broken up. This phenomenon is known as '" shrinkage " jointing. The term " shrinkage " is an apt one, if it be understood that the shrinkage of the rock is often brought about by change of stress. Stresses.-The compressive component of water stress on the individual grains is evidently the same as that of the water with which it is in contact. This is so, both before and after the jointing is formed. Before the jointing is formed there is, however, a tensile stress in one or more directions which keeps the material from contracting. .

GENTLEMEN Herewith are transmitted reports from the Treasurer and of the principal standing committees of the Institute. To these special reports members are referred for details as to the year's work. Despite the unfavorable business conditions obtaining throughout the year, the Institute was able to carry on its various activities without curtailment and without drawing on the surplus accumulated through previous years. In fact, small additions were made to the Life, Member¬ship and various other funds. It is highly desirable that such additions should continue to be made, especially to the Life Membership fund, for reasons reported last year. At present, money must be used from current receipts in order to enable the Institute to fulfill its obligations to those who on joining the organization commuted their dues by a single payment. In addition, with the passage of years the number increases of those who have paid dues forty years or more and who, by reason of age or dis¬ability, are unable longer to practise their profession. These men have supported the Institute through their active professional life and it would be a pity to lose them as members through resignation or for failure to keep up their dues. In accordance with the By-laws the Board has authority to advance such members, on application, to the Honor Roll of Senior Members and to relieve them from further payment of dues. It has been the policy of the Board to do this liberally, but to keep up this, as well as to meet other obligations, it is necessary for money to be provided. It has been estimated by the Treasurer that nearly $50,000 additional should be placed in the Life Membership fund as soon as possi¬ble to meet these obligations without using current income and to that end it is necessary, not only to avoid running behind currently but to earn, if possible, some surplus each year. The small amount transferred to the Life Membership fund from surplus this year was, as a matter of fact, made possible by certain members paying personally bills that were properly chargeable to the Treasury. Such generosity is common among those active in Institute work and probably no year would have closed with a surplus except for it.

A discussion based on three commercial furnace tests and electrical analogue calculations is presented. It shows that while regenerator efficiency is mainly dependent on loading or relative amount of heat exchange surface plus the heat transfer coefficients as effected by flow velocity, the actual air preheat temperature can be high or low, largely independent of regenerator efficiency, mainly due to the diluting or unbalancing effects of cold air leakage into various parts of the furnace system. THERE are many signs of a renewal of interest in the heat regeneration aspect of the open hearth process, among them being the recent paper by Marsh,' the introduction of auxiliary checkers in the stacks of the Isley furnace design, and a number of recent installations of two-pass checkers in new and old furnaces. However, there are also signs of yielding to the usual temptation of oversimplifying a problem. Faced with the job of obtaining better draft on a furnace, for example, a good designer always recognizes that focusing attention on some one factor, such as height of the stack or capacity of the exhaust fan, does not make his problem any easier; rather he must look at the whole system, including such items as valve resistances, bends in the flues, and flow resistance in the waste heat boiler; then he must make his design in relation to the available draft so as to avoid any serious bottleneck in the system. Yet this example is really much simpler than the problem of air preheating, and again, the latter problem is not really made easier by concentrating on air temperature in uptakes and on the more obvious methods for making this air as hot as possible. Also to be considered are such things as the total amount of air needed theoretically for complete combustion at any selected fuel rate, together with that needed for oxygen absorbed into the bath and for burning the combustible gases given out from the bath, plus some excess air. Furthermore, how does this total air requirement relate to the regenerator efficiency at various loadings? How much of the total air equivalent in stack gases will come from preheated air passed through the whole length of the incoming regenerator and how much from air leakage into various zones of the whole furnace system? Does the effect of leakage air differ depending on whether it leaks into the ingoing regenerator, the furnace above floor level, the outgoing regenerator, or the stack zone? Over a number of years we have in this Laboratory experimented with methods for measuring hot gas temperatures; we have measured, approximately, the efficiency of a few regenerators on commercial furnaces and we have developed an electrical analogue' for calculations of regenerator efficiency. The whole problem is too complex to cover in one paper even with a more complete background of data than we possess, but we can attempt here to clarify certain aspects in a general way, hoping to assist specific plant studies on individual furnaces. Some of our earlier experience has been incorporated into chaps. 4, 19, 20, and 21 in the book "Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking,"" and on the assumption that this text is available to most readers, this discussion has been shortened by references to that book. Delayed failure in steel occurs by controlled initiation and growth of a crack. The incubation period for crack initiation was measured. Crack initiation and Propagation are controlled by interaction between hydrogen concentration and triaxial stress state. The incubation period results from stress-induced diffusion of hydrogen to the point of crack initiation. THIS paper describes the phenomenon of delayed failureland the kinetics of crack initiation and propagation in uniformly hydrogenated steel. The investigation was prompted by service failures of high-strength-steel components at applied stresses far below the conventional yield strength, after the part had successfully sustained equal or higher stresses for an extended time interval. This delayed failure phenomenon, often termed static fatigue, is associated1 with the presence of hydrogen. This is not surprising, since the voluminous literature on flaking and hydrogen embrit-tlement demonstrates that hydrogen may exert a potent embrittling influence. Flakes, or internal hairline cracks in alloy-steel forgings, are related to the presence of hydrogen retained from the steel-making process.2 On the other hand, embrit-tlement arises from hydrogen introduced during surface treatments such as acid pickling or electroplating. Laboratory delayed failures have been induced in notch specimens of 4340 steel by electrolytic charging of the specimen surface with hydrogen and subsequent static stressing.l,4,5 Static fatigue was observed over a wide range of applied stresses; however, failure did not occur below a critical applied stress, designated as the static fatigue limit. In this instance the extended time for failure resulted primarily from the macroscopic redistribution of hydrogen. A crack formed to the depth of the hydrogen enriched "case* upon loading; further crack growth naturally awaited diffusion of hydrogen into the material ahead of the crack. The crack-propagation rate was therefore controlled primarily by the macroscopic diffusion of hydrogen into the specimen interior during the test. Thus, in this instance static fatigue was associated with the movement of a gross concentration gradient. However, delayed failure in steel of uniform hydrogen concentration is of greater fundamental interest, as well as commercial significance. With a homogeneous hydrogen distribution a different mode of delayed failure might be expected. As the heterogeneous hydrogen distribution became more uniform,4,5 the initial crack-propagation rate decreased markedly and, in fact, what appeared to be an incubation period for crack initiation was observed. However, the macroscopic concentration gradient precluded an accurate evaluation of these observations. Although the existence of an incubation period, up to this time, has not been established definitely, it is not amiss to point out some implications of the concept. Discussion of the paper of Blarney Stevens, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 79, July, 1913, pp. 1285 to 1303. F. L. GRAMMER,Leesburg, Va. (communication to the Secretary*):¬ Mr. Stevens refers to an explanation of parallel jointing by W. 0. Crosby, which I noted when reading one of his excellent text books. It seemed to me earthquakes were not a satisfactory explanation, and I looked up several authorities; but I never realized how small the usual amplitudes were until Mr. Stevens presented his paper. Several letters to the U. S. Geodetic Survey showed me there were very few records of tidal movements of earth crust in the United States. Altitude and latitude would be influencing factors; but this diurnal movement must exceed earthquake amplitudes, besides being more nearly universal. My inquiries brought the answer that the major directions of jointing had not been extensively tabulated. If major directions of jointing were recorded-with notes as to angle with mountain chain, or North Star, and distance between joints, with nature of rock and maximum and minimum tidal up-heaval-some interesting relations might be made manifest.

Since 1882, world zinc production has increased. In contrast, US zinc production rose until about 1915, but since then has remained nearly constant, with a slight tendency to decrease. Production from the Tri-State district, the largest early source of zinc in the US, has gone down steadily; this decline has been balanced by a growth in the rate of other districts. These changes in US production are due to economic, not geological, factors. Recent exploration has located large minable ore bodies: additional deposits will undoubtedly be found in the stratabound carbonate rock and volcanogenic environments. A statistical analysis of the exploration effort in the Middle Tennessee district indicates that new discoveries can be expected there. Thus, the US is in an early stage of the production cycle for zinc. Of major mining districts in the US, only the Tri-State is exhausted under current economic conditions; large zinc resources of low-grade material, which would repay mining at higher prices or improved technology, are known to exist in that district .

The thirteenth meeting of the Boston Local Section was held at the Engineers' Club, 2 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, on Monday evening, Oct. 6, 1913. Fourteen members and three guests were present at the dinner, at which Chairman Robert H. Richards presided. After the dinner, the Chairman expressed his pleasure in welcoming the members at the first dinner following the vacation. He said that lie had attended a meeting of the Directors of the parent society in New York ; that they had asked what the Boston Section were doing, and expressed their hope that we would be able to make some of our papers formal and offer them for publication. The Chairman then said that lie realized the objection to this; that members were less willing to speak for publication than informally, but that lie hoped, nevertheless, that some of the speakers this year would see their way to write up a formal paper at some later date, along the general lines of their informal ,addresses.

THE important investigations of Dr. G. F. Becker at Steamboat Springs, Nev., in 1885, aided by the analytical work of W. H. Melville, established the fact that sulphides were being deposited at the surface by hot ascending waters.1 Steamboat Springs is situated near the eastern base of the escarpment of the Sierra Nevada, six miles distant from the Comstock lode. In a region of former volcanic activity, hot springs with a temperature of about 80° C. break forth through a fissure in granodiorite, and at the base of a basaltic bluff the waters have deposited a large amount of siliceous and calcareous sinter, some of which is colored red by antimony sulphide. The sinter from one of the springs was analyzed by Mr. Melville,2 and his results, re-calculated to grams per kilogram, showed [ ] The relative quantities of antimonious and arsenious sulphides are not given in the above analysis, but I believe that the former greatly predominated. The water of one of the springs was also analyzed by Melville and the re-calculation of this analysis to salts that were possibly present is given in Table I.

INTRODUCTION BELT conveyors generally are conceded to be the most economical method yet devised for the transportation of large quantities of bulk materials within plants. Belts are coming into greater use for transportation over long distances and are replacing other forms of long-haul conveyance. It is not the intent of the writer to comment on the design of belt conveyors, but to offer some suggestions for improvement in the operation of conveying belts, based on many years experience with belts in several stonecrushing plants. It is the contention of this writer that opportunities for improvement not fully realized by most operators exist in many plants and that a study of the individual conveyors can result in lower unit belt costs. GENERAL RELIABILITY It is the fool-proof nature and general reliability of the belt conveyor that is responsible for its neglect. Even when abused, a belt will carry large tonnages and last a long time, often outlasting the personnel responsible for its care. Some operators look upon the purchase of a new belt as an expensive outlay every so many years, rather than a constant and steady cost amounting in belt wear alone to several dollars every operating day. This belt wear for all conveyors in one stone-crushing plant known by the writer costs 1 1/2 cents per ton or $12 to $15 per hour, based on the present cost of belt replacements. The fact that these replacement costs are double those of prewar quality emphasizes the necessity of improving the conditions that make belts wear out. Some of those conditions are the responsibility of the conveyor designer, and if a serious original error has been made, this handicap cannot be overcome by the operator. If the belt is too narrow, too steep, or too fast for good loading, the operator finds that he has an inherently expensive belt. The other factors that decrease the life of a belt are more or less under his control. The two factors of most importance are the loading conditions and the alignment. Most of the cover wear and carcass cutting occurs at the loading point and if the alignment is not good under all conditions, edge wear or damage may result, Fig I. LOADING THE BELT It is difficult to load a belt in an ideal manner; that is, to flow the material on the moving belt at a steady rate, without impact, without turbulence, and with a velocity equal to and in the same direction as the belt. An inclined belt is especially difficult to load and particularly when its speed is over 300 or 350 fpm. Inclined conveyors require longer skirt plates to prevent spillage until the load settles. It does not seem reasonable to expect an inclined conveyor to carry the same load as a horizontal belt of the same width and speed, because of the difficulty in loading

(written discussion).—It seems to me that thc young man must first be absolutely sure that the work he has taken up is to his liking and then I would advise that he get into the practical end of it and learn as much about it as he can as fast as he can. For instance, in the refinery business the college man, graduated in chemical engineering, should ground himself by going through the various departments in a refinery and working in them until he is thoroughly familiar with the operating problems. In a short time he would be able to apply many things which appear in the abstract form in his college work and this would opcn up an opportunity for him to capitalize on them, promoting his own interest. I do not criticize the present-day college men as a class, but I have found that many of them come into your plant with the idea that mere possession of a diploma should insure rapid promotion; in a short time they are impatient and usually leave. We have found in employing men that the single attribute most difficult to find in them is a lot of energy and whole-hearted interest in the work at hand, and it seems to me that if a man combines these with a careful technical training he should be fairly well equipped to gamble on his future. They must learn that the biggest satisfaction to be gained in life is in their work. Procedure for Attaining Objective of Young Petroleum Engineer H. B. Fell,+ Ardmore, Okla. (written discussion).—Of course, the first thing to be ronsidered in any proposition is the ultimate objective that is desired to be attained. 1 presume that the desired objective of most of the young men graduating in petroleum engineering will be that of chief executive of one of the companies in the petroleum industry, or one of the allied industries, or to become an independent oil producer, or oil refiner, or possibly an oil distributor. The next phase then to be considered is the procedure which should most logically be followed to attain the objeckive of the indivitlual, since in these cases these young men will have been trained in a course in petroleum engineering and it would logically be presumed that the attainment of their objective should be through the operating end of the branch of the business with which they are connected. The operating end is, of course, the department of each branch of the business that develops the resources, or refines the products, or distributes the products, from which the profits are derived, and is a part of any business which is filled with enough interesting work to appease the desires of the most ambitious young men. In order to get the best possible training it would appear to me that the place for a young man to start after graduation would be at the bottom of that branch of the industry which he expects to follow. For example, if he is going in the producing end he can gct no better training than is secured by starting as a roustabout in the ficltl, where he romes in constant rontact with the character of work that is necessary

ALTHOUGH Gaudin1 and more recently Sutherland2 have calculated the probability of collision of a falling mineral particle with a rising bubble, there is no published information concerning the details of the mechanism of attachment of a collector-coated particle to a bubble. During the past year the writer has developed a theory for the mechanism of attachment, which has been substantiated experimentally. Funds for the investigation and for some of the equipment used have been supplied by the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota. Motion picture studies of the phenomena involved in the collision between mineral particles and bubbles, such as those of Spedden and Hannan," show that the contact can be completed within 0.3 millisec. Formulas developed for rigid bodies have hitherto been used' for the calculation of the motion of bubble and particle, but it is obvious that a bubble cannot be regarded as a rigid body. On the contrary, Spedden and Hannan's pictures show a great degree of deformation during the collision. The time of attachment was calculated as the time the particle drifted past the bubble. Time of Collision The theory presented in this paper enables calculation of the time of collision, using the concept that the bubble, or more generally, a liquid-air interface, acts as an elastic body. The elasticity, defined as the restoring force on a mechanical deformation, is caused by the surface tension and is the result of the principle of the minimum of free surface energy. It is well known that an elasticity together with a mass determines a frequency of vibration. The vibrations of jets and drops caused by the elasticity of the interface are known to comply exactly with the classical theory of capillarity.' However, the vibrations of isolated bubbles, as distinct from foams, have not been investigated previously. The following equation, presented elsewhere,' has been deduced for these frequencies: 3_____________________ fB = 9.20.vV.vn. (n-1).(n+2)/8 [I] in which fB is the frequency of a harmonic of the bubble in cycles per second, V the volume of the bubble in cc, n a number determining the order of the harmonic, and n = 2 the basic vibration. The first (basic) harmonic describes a change of the spherical bubble to an ellipsoidal bubble. The higher harmonics are more complicated, for the circumference of the bubble is divided approximately into as many parts as the order of the harmonic. As an example, Spedden and Hannan's published motion picture of a vibrating bubble corresponds to the sixth harmonic. Eq 1 shows that only the first and third harmonics are simple multiples (1 and 3), all the others being irrational fractions of the basic frequency. This means that the shape of the vibration can change with time and is in general unsym-metric in respect to the time axis. Such conditions prevail when there is a distributed elasticity or mass, as in the case of vibrating membranes or rods. The constant 9.20 is valid for water at room temperature, but a general solution involving the physical constants of the liquid has not been found. The case of the floating particle is much easier to treat than that of the bubble. It can be assumed that the elasticity is caused exclusively by the interface and that the mass is concentrated in the particle together with some adhering water. The following expression for the frequency of a system of one degree of freedom can be applied: fP = -1/2-vE/m [2] Here fp is the frequency of the particle vibration in cycles per second, E the elasticity in dynes per cm, and m the mass in grams. The classical theory of impact phenomena gives the time of collision during the striking of a spring (in this case the surface of the bubble) by a mass, as: t, = 2/f = nvm/E [3] It is now possible to develop an expression for the elasticity of a floating cylindrical particle. It can be assumed that the elasticity is caused exclusively by the interface and that the mass is concentrated in the particle together with some adhering water. A PROPER consideration of the subject of this paper should include economic aspects as well as the technical phases of the metallurgy, production, and properties of the product. The metallurgical phases of the processing and properties of the product will be considered only from practical aspects and within the scope of the writer's experience with tonnage production. The Bessemer process was invented 85 years ago and became important because it put steel manufacture upon a larger and less costly basis. In America the Bessemer production has declined for many years and has not maintained its proportionate place with the rapid advances of the open hearth. The achievements in the open-hearth field were attained by the greater number of technical people attracted to that branch of the industry. The antipathy of technical students for the older and less popular Bessemer field gradually weakened the forces defending it and retarded the development of new and better methods. In Europe the economic advantage of the basic Bessemer process has not been overlooked and the tonnage usually is greater than that of the open hearth. The acid process has been the subject of renewed attention in America during the past few years and those who are more familiar with it are striving to show that the method is too valuable to abandon. A considerable tonnage of Bessemer-blown metal, in both molten and ingot forms, used in connection with the open-hearth practice makes it an important auxiliary unit to the industry. This practice aids in modifying the price level of heavy remelting scrap in addition to speeding up the open-hearth operation. The use of Bessemer steel has continued not only because of periodic economic advantages but also because of certain inherent qualities of machinability, weldability and stiffness, which are valuable for many applications. The properties of stiffness and rather high reaction to cold-work require some modification in order to meet the demands of modern methods of processing, which involve cold-reduction and cold-forming. At least one factor contributing to the stiffness of this steel is the relatively high phosphorus content of the acid product. The phosphorus content of the Thomas or basic Bessemer steel of Europe is considerably lower than the normal acid product in America. The American industry has continued the use of the acid process chiefly for the reason that the available ores are more easily adapted to this process from both metallurgical and economic standpoints. In European practice the basic process is necessary with the highly phosphoric ores available and it is sustained to some degree by the sale of the rich phosphate slag as a by-product. The basic process was used in this country at several plants many years ago, but was abandoned for economic reasons. A part of the past history of these trials is given here because the author believes it has not been published and it has some bearing on the subject of this paper. The effects of lead and tin up to maximum contents of about 0.1 per cent. each, in the presence of oxygen between 0.04 and 0.30 per cent., have been studied. Tin is retained efficiently in the oxidized condition, whereas lead is not. An approximate relation between the lead-oxygen and tin-oxygen contents is deduced which, if observed, permits the presence of these elements without detrimental effect. Excess of lead beyond this limit affects ductility and rolling properties adversely and an excess of tin correspondingly diminishes the conductivity. It is shown that copper carrying a combined lead and tin content of several hundredths per cent., yet fully equal in quality to electrolytic wirebar, may be produced under commercial conditions. Tin is not normally found in more than bare traces in current grades of American electrolytic copper, and lead is rarely found to more than a few thousandths per cent. In the electrolytic refining of copper these metals do not present great difficulty in separation and their presence in any considerable amount in copper that has been refined by this method need not be tolerated. On the other hand, the effect of these elements is not entirely academic, as a considerable tonnage of scrap copper liberally contaminated with them has been reclaimed by the fire-refining process into metal with a residual lead and tin content of several hundredths per cent., yet having excellent working properties and fully equal in quality to current grades of electrolytic wirebar. Such copper has been found entirely suitable for use in the manufacture of electrical apparatus. In the absence of oxygen, tin is known to depress the conductivity rapidly, and lead to impair ductility and the rolling properties, yet the effects of these metals on commercial grades of copper—i. e., copper containing from 0.03 to 0.10 per cent. of oxygen—apparently has not received systematic attention. The final results of the operation of the Cananea test dumps are discussed. Scale-up factors between shake-flask tests, column tests and the large test dumps are established for the Cananea ore. The formation of clay layers, which formed inside the dumps and markedly affected extraction, as well as secondary enrichment, are discussed.
