SUMMARY THE cost of labor turnover in industry is so large as to justify the adoption of almost any means to bring about its reduction. Intensive study has shown that faulty methods of hiring and discharging men is the most important factor in labor turnover. Complete control over hiring and discharging by the foreman is a relic of outgrown industrial conditions; centralized hiring permits this work to be put on a scientific basis and also does away with many serious evils that cannot otherwise be reached. Centralized hiring does not impair the authority of the foreman; he hires his men from the employment office and discharges them back to it, instead of from and to the street. The employment manager, being a direct representative of the employer, tends to restore the former relation of direct intercourse between employee and employer that was helpful in avoiding friction between them. Being a specialist, he is able to bring special knowledge and skill to bear upon the task of selling employment in his concern to desirable workmen; lie is also able to give the foreign workman the special attention he requires. Employment managers have been used for the past few years by a number of large organizations, a few of which are engaged in the mining and metallurgical industries. They have invariably reduced labor turnover, in some cases to as little as one-tenth of what it had been. So great a reduction is due in part to other changes made in the light of the data made available by scientific study of the labor problem. In my former paper on personnel work1 I advocated the more general use of the employment manager in mining and metallurgical enterprises as a means of reducing labor turnover. The form of organization recommended seems not be to understood by all, and I have requested the privilege of explaining it at greater length, since it is perhaps the most important factor of all in personnel work, and has a vital influence on the cost sheet of every industrial enterprise.

Beryl is a mineral that may be difficult to distinguish from quartz by casual field inspection. The easily recognized green color and hexagonal crystal form of coarse-grained beryl are by no means universal, even in beryl from pegmatitic deposits. If it occurred as a fine-grained accessory mineral in an igneous rock, it would almost certainly escape detection unless samples were submitted for petrographic or chemical analysis. There may be substantial deposits of some beryllium mineral, other than beryl, that has been overlooked because that mineral also closely resembles the common rock-forming minerals. A reliable and simple method of identifying beryllium minerals and determining the beryllium content of a rock would be helpful in exploration. This article describes preliminary experiments in applying nuclear reaction to the qualitative identification of beryl and to the semiquantitative determination of the beryllium content of rock samples. Gaudin,1,2 the first to apply a nuclear reaction in detecting beryllium minerals, developed a method that irradiates the sample with gamma rays, which react with beryllium nuclei to produce neutrons. The neutrons are then measured with standard equipment. The cross section for this reaction is about 1 millibarn. The cross section is a measure of the probability that a reaction will take place, for example, between a beryllium nucleus and an incident gamma ray or alpha particles.3-5 At 1-millibarn cross section for the reaction, satisfactory performance required a source strength of the order of 1 curie (3.7 x 10"' disintegrations per sec, where each disintegration releases one or more gamma rays). The reactions will not take place if the gamma radiation is below a minimum energy, in this case 1.63 mev. The size of the source and the energy of the radiation made heavy shielding necessary for these experiments, both to reduce the background count of the neutron counter and to safeguard personnel. The original discovery of the neutron by Chad-wick in 1932 resulted from experiments with another nuclear reaction, induced by bombarding beryllium with alpha particles in which the products are carbon-12 and neutrons. The equation for this reaction is as follows:' " ,Be" + ,He'? 6C12 + 8,n' [1] re-particle neutron In the above nuclear equation (Eq. 1), the sub- script number indicates the number of protons in the nucleus (the atomic number) and the superscript the total number of neutrons and protons (approximately the atomic mass). For the alpha-neutron reaction the cross section is about 250 milli-barns, or 250 times that of the gamma-neutron reaction used by Gaudin. The positively charged alpha particle is repelled by the positive charge of the beryllium nucleus; it must, therefore, have a certain minimum energy in order to approach close enough to the beryllium nucleus to react. For reaction with the beryllium nucleus, the lower limit of the alpha-particle energy is 3.7 mev. The alpha-neutron reaction, with polonium-210 as an alpha source, was selected for the present experiments. Alpha particles are emitted by polonium-210 at 5.30 mev, which is adequate for the reaction with beryllium. Furthermore, this isotope of polonium emits alpha particles with negligible associated gamma radiation, thus eliminating the necessity of shielding. The half-life of polonium-210 is 138 days. Inasmuch as alpha particles carry a possible charge and are large compared with most nuclear particles, their energy is rapidly dissipated in passing through matter. Their range in standard air is 3.66 cm,3 and they penetrate only a few tens of microns into a mineral sample. The short range in air can be minimized by preparation of a flat sample surface that can be brought very close to the alpha source during analysis. On the other hand, short range of alpha particles in air lessens the radiological health hazard and makes it possible to use this method without shielding. It must be emphasized, however, that the alpha emitters are potentially very dangerous if they enter the human body. Polonium must be handled with extreme caution. The literature has reported experiments on the yield of neutrons from reaction of alpha particles with beryllium nuclei. Feld" reports that in intimate mixtures of polonium and beryllium, 3 x 106 eutrons per sec are produced per curie of polonium. Elsewhere in the same reference it is stated that a sandwich-type source yields about one third as many neutrons as an intimate mixture. A table of neutron yields for full energy polonium alpha-particles on thick targets as reported by Anderson7 is the basis of Table I. From Table I it can be deduced that the elements most likely to interfere, i.e., those that also produce neutrons when bombarded by alpha particles, are boron and fluorine. These data also show that it will probably not be possible to determine very small quantities of beryllium in rocks because of the masking effects of the major elements, sodium, magnesium, and aluminum. THE diamond drilling of certain characters of unstable rock forma-tion, as, for example, the copper-bearing schists of the Miami district in Arizona, is rendered most difficult by what is known as " caving" of the sides of the drill holes. As this caving is very greatly increased by the action of flowing water, it occurred to me, after experiencing a great deal of difficulty with caving in diamond-drill holes which I was drilling for the Miami Copper Co., that if I could substitute air for water, much of the caving-with resultant difficulties, such as decreased speed of sinking and increased consumption. of diamonds-would be overcome. After some experimenting, I found that it was perfectly practicable to substitute air for the water; forcing the air down the hollow rotating rods in the same manner as is done with water, the air passing out around the bit, which is thus cooled, and ascending on the outside of the rods to the collar of the hole, carrying the borings in just as satisfactory a manner as had been done by the water, but without the accompanying destruction or caving of the sides of the drill holes such as had been so generally experienced with the water. When water was encountered in the drilling this water was forced up to the collar just as it would have been had water been used in the .drilling, but with the correspondingly decreased flow there was relatively less washing or caving of the sides of the drill holes. The only change necessary in the arrangement of the drill is that a cross instead of a tee is used at the collar of the hole. A tightly woven jute bag is attached to one arm of the cross, for collecting and filtering the sample; and when drilling in dry ground a jet of water is attached to the opposite arm of the cross, to collect the dust and wash down the sample into the bag. The rods rotate through a stuffing box attached to the upper opening of the cross. The distention of the jute bag by the issuing air indicates the operating conditions as sufficiently as did the flow of water when using water in the drill hole.

For a number of years, from an economic standpoint, the ventilation of the Colorado mine of the Davis-Daly Copper Co. has been a difficult problem. The development through the main hoisting shaft was pursued for a number of years and to a depth of about 2500 ft.( 762 m.)before large bodies of good commercial ore were opened up. This lack of early success in exploration restricted expenditures for ventilation, with the result that the present orebodies were opened up at a depth of 2500 ft., and in country rock f relatively high temperature, without adequate means f supplying the development faces and the stopes with cool or fresh air of low humidity and suitable velocity. During the progress of development, two or three connections were made at higher levels with the workings of adjoining operations, but these were of a makeshift and unsatisfactory character and afforded no means for carrying downcast air from the surface, in anything approaching a direct course, to the working faces. During the latter part of 1917, arrangements were made with. the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., whereby, during the year 1918 and the early part f the year 1919, a crosscut was driven eastwards on the 2500-ft. level of the Colorado shaft and connection was made by means f an up-raise of approximately 200 ft. to a crosscut driven westwards from the 2800-ft. level of the Belmont mine, this crosscut at the top of the raise being driven at Davis-Daly expense by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. This connection, in conjunction with a No. 11 Sirocco fan installed near the Colorado shaft, provided the Colorado mine with a maximum of approximately 30,000 cu. ft. per min. of relatively fresh air, most of which came in a fairly direct route from the downcast Belmont shaft through the No. 11 fan to the 2500-ft. level stopes. After passing through these stopes and the stopes of overlying levels, it passed through the main crosscuts on higher levels back to the Colorado shaft, which provided the upcast for this current of air. In central Colorado is a great belt of intrusive porphyry nearly 100 miles long (160 km.), extending from the Clear Creek district on the north to Aspen on the south, which includes many of the well known mining camps of the state. Near the southern end of this belt, at Leadville, the occurrence of these intrusives is most marked, resulting in intensive mineralization and the formation of a great variety of large orebodies. During the past 40 years, Leadville has been a steady producer of gold, silver, lead, zinc, manganese, iron, and bismuth, in the forms of sulfide, carbonate and oxide ores. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss pyrite alone, which, under present economic conditions, is valuable chiefly for its sulfur contents. The ore-bearing formation of the Leadville district consists of two beds of limestone separated by a layer of quartzite. The upper limeatone is carbonaceous, and is known locally as the blue limestone. It varies in thickness from 50 to 300 ft. (15 to 91 m.). The lower limestone is Silurian, known locally as white limestone, and is about the same thickness as the upper bed. Underneath the Silurian limestone is a layer of Cambrian quartzite from 100 to 250 ft. (30 to 76 m.) thick resting on Archean granite, which forms the limit of ore deposition. As a rule, there is a sheet of white porphyry above the upper, or blue limestone; a sheet of gray porphyry is associated with the blue limestone, either in or below it, but the porphyries are not so regular as the quartzites and limestones and are not always found in their expected positions. Throughout the district there is an elaborate system of faults and intrusive porphyry dikes, which have an important bearing on ore deposits. The writer has seen two or three orebodies which were not closely associated with either a fault or a porphyry dike, but if the minor fractures and water courses are considered as part of the fault system it is safe to say that all orebodies are directly traceable to one or both of these causes. The distribution of pyrite in the Leadville district is quite general; but, eliminating the smaller bodies and those containing prohibitive quantities of zinc or lead, and considering only the larger deposits commercially valuable for their sulfur, we find the chief pyritic ore-bodies extending in a zone approximately 6000 ft. (1828 m.) long and several hundred feet wide, from the Yak and Moyer, on the south; through the Louisville, Greenback, Mahala, Adams, and Wolftone, on Carbonate Hill; across Yankee Hill, and into the Quadrilateral, Denver City, and Tip Top, on Fryer Hill.

WITH numerous plans under consideration for coal classification, and with the advent of the Bituminous Coal Code, the intelligent sam-pling of coal has become increasingly important. To us it is rather significant that there have been very few fundamental studies of coal sampling in American technical literature since those of E. G. Bailey, which appeared in the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry in March, 1909. He covered the subject up to that time so thoroughly and in such an excellent manner that perhaps many other later students have felt that they could add very little to his findings. The recent studies of the British Engineering Standards Association have indicated the possibility of a somewhat different interpretation of Bailey's results, permitting the taking of smaller samples, and perhaps it will now be helpful to reopen this question. C. W. H. Holmes, in an informative series of articles on coal sampling recently published in Colliery Engineering, makes two rather interesting statements, as follows: It is scarcely surprising to find a lack of interest and knowledge regarding the sampling of coal not only in the mining industry itself but also among consumers of industrial fuel: at its best coal sampling is a dirty business, regarded as a nuisance and an expense by the commercial man, and usually as a nuisance and nothing else by the chemist. The writer can conceive only two classes of people who have never experienced any difficulty in obtaining representative samples of coal from wagons; those who have never tried to, and those who have never had the necessity or desire to check the accuracy of their work. The primary purpose of this paper is to present some tabulated data of the more significant results of a sampling investigation undertaken during the last four years to obtain certain fundamental data on the variables connected with coal sampling and to point out that often assumptions have been made that are not in accordance with the facts. ON Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 17, a large and interested audience gathered in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies building to take part in the gold supply symposium that had been arranged for by the Mining Geology Committee. Waldemar Lindgren presided over the gathering and after brief introductory remarks on the international situation as regards lead, silver and gold, called on John Wellington Finch to present an oral abstract of the paper, "Sources and Trends in Gold Production," by R. J. Grant, director of the Mint, and. J. B. Knaebel. This ' paper reviewed the gold production of the world, by countries, since 1845, from the statistical viewpoint, leaving to the later speakers discussion of the statistics.

THE One Hundred and Twenty-sixth meeting-of the Institute, held in San Francisco, Sept. 25 to 29, 1922, was a success in every way. Character-istically, San Francisco presented climate suited, to the occasion, while the Committees on Arrangements left nothing undone that would contribute to the interest and entertainment of the members and their wives. There was a registration of over 230, and all sections, save three, were represented. In the technical meetings, under the leadership of Albert Burch in the mining session and C. W. Merrill in the milling session, the greatest interest was manifested in ore-hunting geology and modern ore-dressing methods. The general geologic phase developed numerous discussions and had for its aim the study and correlation of known data and the application-of these to the finding of commercial orebodies. The geologic features of the Comstock and their significance to the development of the present orebodies were discussed. This brought out matters of much technical interest as well as those of romantic nature in the history of the early life of that camp. The profitable application of modern milling methods to ores, non-commercial a short time ago, was discussed with much interest. The recent work on the Comstock ores occupied a conspicuous part in these discussions. Basic principles delineated by mathematical study of mechanical devices for the milling of ore came in for a prominent part in the program as well as the physical-chemical side of the processes devised for the winning of precious metals as a profit.

Experiments indicate that the fatigue limit of various drill steels becomes vanishingly small in the presence of water and other corrosive liquids. Therefore one must generally expect fatigue failures of drill steels in a great many field operations. However, it is theoretically possible to so choose the hammer impact speed of a percussion drill in order to maximize the total length of hole drilled before failure occurs. In this paper the existence of an optimum speed is demonstrated and it is shown to be comparable to presently used piston speeds. The influence on drilling speed and hole length of a number of other pertinent design features, such as bit geometry, hammer geometry and steel properties is also established. Although machinery should be designed to obtain optimum performance, it is not always clear just what performance characteristic is to be optimized. For example in a rock drill it would be desirable to optimize all of the following characteristics: drilling speed, bit life, steel life, total length of hole drilled before failure, and efficiency of energy conversion. The word failure could signify excessive bit wear, bit fracture, steel fracture, or some other type of component failure. It is not possible in general to optimize all performance criteria simultaneously. For example, one could achieve fantastically large drilling rates at the expense of bit or steel life, energy requirements and physical size of system. It therefore becomes necessary to compromise requirements in order to achieve a well-balanced albeit non-optimum design. It is, however, extremely useful to explore the interrelationships between the different performance characteristics. Such a procedure would help to establish theoretical limits of performance within the framework of existing knowledge and also serve as a practical design procedure for special applications where a particular performance characteristic is of greatest concern to the user (e.g., steel breakage might be especially undesirable in certain locations). It is the purpose of this paper to examine the problem of how one may drill the deepest possible hole before breakage of the drill steel occurs. Of course the problem is almost trivial if a well defined fatigue limit (endurance limit) exists for the drill steel. In such cases one merely keeps the piston impact speed sufficiently low to insure that the stresses in the steel never exceed the fatigue limit, thereby achieving an infinite life. If, however, no definite fatigue limit exists, as seems to be the case in the presence of even mildly corrosive agents such as water (see later discussion), then a finite life is inescapable and one can at best hope to maximize the useful life of the system. Each of the three refining furnaces in use at Great Falls is provided with a waste-heat boiler. The general arrangement of furnace and boiler is as shown in Fig. 1. Two of the furnaces have hearths 45 ft. 7 in. by 14 ft. 6 in.; the third has a hearth 46 ft. 101/2 in. long and of the same width as the other two. The furnaces at present are equipped for firing with natural gas. As originally constructed two of the furnaces had hearths 36 by 14 ft., and were designed to use coal on grates, but these furnaces were lengthened and fired successively with pulverized coal and oil. The third furnace was added in 1926 and was oil-fired until 1928. Since that year natural gas has been in use on all of the furnaces. The changes that have occurred in connection with furnace design and the comparative performance of the furnaces with various fuels were described1 by the author in 1932. Two of the furnaces are provided with Stirling class A-30 boiler. rated at 400 hp. and having 4008 sq. ft. of heating surface. The thir furnace has a class A-21 Stirling waste-heat boiler rated at 300 hp. with 2805 sq. ft. of heating surface. The boilers are not baffled. The waste-heat boilers are placed on a platform 17 ft. 3 in. above the level of the furnace charge floor. The waste gases from the furnace pass by a vertical uptake flue, 4 by 3 ft. inside at the point where it enters the chamber, to a brick chamber from which the gases pass over a bridge wall and into the boiler setting. The uptake flue and chamber are constructed of silica brick. Each furnace has a steel stack 125 ft. high, measured from the boiler floor. The stacks have a 41/2-in. firebrick lining and are 5 ft. in diameter

In vol. xxxviii. (1889) of the American Journal of Science, under the heading " Pseudomorphs of Native Copper after Azurite from Grant County, New Mexico," Mr. W. S. Yeates describes a most interesting mineral form. His account is, that a material having the appearance of native copper, but brittle and much lighter than native copper (its specific gravity being but 4.15), was submitted to him by the United States National Museum for examination. The substance was reported to him as occurring in masses, varying in weight from one ounce to seventy pounds, and composed of tabular crystals, variously grouped. The specimens, when submitted, ex hibited on the outride a covering of clay; and they were subse quently found to consist of particles of the same clay, intimately mixed with others of native copper, producing the aspect, without the weight, of pure copper. The forms of the azurite crystals, found at Bisbee, Arizona, having been suggested by the specimens, actual goniometer-measurements were made; and the two crystallizations were thus proved to be identical. To these statements I may be permitted to add some further in formation, derived from personal examination, and illustrated with a suite of characteristic specimens collected by myself (Fig. 2).* Grant County, New Mexico, in which these specimens were found, is a region noted for variety of mineral species. The sixth edition of Dana's Mineralogy mentions many of the silver, copper, and lead minerals, and also turquois, aragonite, wulfenite, barite, fluorite, vanadinite, etc. I have noticed also green and red garnet, molybdenite, native alum, smithsonite, bornite, etc., some of which presented peculiar modes of occurrence. The green garnet, for instance, was in masses formed of separate crystals, each of pea-size and not unlike that vegetable in tint and smooth opaqueness. The crystallization was

MAGNETITE is the important iron ore of New Jersey although bog ore, limonite and red hematite were mined in sizable quantity early in the state's min-ing history. The deposits of mag-netite are found in the Highland area in the northern part of the state. These ores outcrop a broad belt 20 miles wide, extending in a northeasterly direction from Phil-lipsburg, on the Delaware River, to Greenwood Lake, at the southern boundary of the state of New York, a distance of 60 miles. The area in which the magnetite is found (see map, Fig. 1) contains 1200 square miles and the center of the area is at Dover, 40 miles west of New York City. In the general area are found 18 parallel ranges or lines of ore deposits. These ranges may be re-garded as mineralized zones in which occur orebodies that are rich enough in magnetite to war-rant mining. Usually a number of the orebodies lie one above the other in the same plane, all dipping and pitching in the same direction. Within the ranges, there may be several parallel orebodies of work-able size. The average strike of the orebodies is N.41° 30' E., with an average dip of 55° southeast and an average pitch of 15 ° to the northeast. Orebodies suitable for mining range from 6 to 100 ft. wide, as measured from foot wall to hanging wall. Their heights, as measured on the dip and normal to the long axis of the orebody, vary from 200 to 3,000 ft. The length along the pitch has never been determined by mining, al-though several of the orebodies have been worked to lengths of 10,000 ft. The grade of the ore as mined today varies from 30 to 60 per cent iron, and the gangue min-erals are chiefly silica, alumina, magnesia, lime and phosphorus.

The relationships between mineral deposits and various plate margin mechanisms are examined under the constraints of radiogenic isotopes and other geochemical indicators. It seems like1 y that: (1) deposits of the spreading ridge association are fairly ubiquitious through most of geologic history and can be recognized by the lithologic assemblage and primitive lead isotope ratios; (2) most metals in the island arc association are not derived entirely from a subducting oceanic plate, and have a partly continental affinity; (3) subduction beneath a continental plate generates ores which are derived either from the downgoing plate or from the lower crust; (4) the heating of a continental plate by thickening or by mantle plumes may develop a metallogenic province involving extraction of metals from the curst; (5) rifts and grabens developing thick sections of marine sediments with evaporites may be the locus of base metal mineralization by movement of reducing brine solutions resulting from diagenesis and bacterial reduction of sulfates

Some time ago, at ameeting of the Institute Prof. J. W. Richards1 said, "I take exception to the statement that all the factors in the production of electrolytic zinc were known long ago.... There is possible in my opinion an improvement of perhaps 50 per cent. in the new electrolytic processes." An examination of the literature of the subject will show the justness of Professor Richards' contention. The work of the earlier investigators was carried on in the shadow of difficulties that, today, are hardly more than memories. We seldom hear now of zinc sponge, that bête noir of the electrolytic-zinc pioneers. Zinc sponge was the name given to a peculiar, soft, black, non-adherent form of zinc deposit that was utterly useless for melting into ingot form. At the big plant at Cockle Creek, New South Wales, in 1897, Edgar Ashcroft2 said that the solution in the plant would suddenly, and without ascertainable cause, go' "bad" and begin to deposit spongy zinc. The most delicate, even spectroscopic, methods of analysis were unable to detect any difference between "good" solution and "bad" solution; either form might change to the other on being kept for a while. When it is added that an outbreak of this insidious disease (which appeared to be infectious, or at least contagious) could be dealt with only by discarding the solution and washing out all tanks and pipe lines, some idea may be gathered of the troubles of the zinc electrometallurgist in what may be spoken of as the "sponge age" of electrolytic zinc. LIBERIAN ore has been called the richest iron ore mined in the world, and thus far, the output from the Liberian Mining Co.'s Bomi Hills mine has lived up to its reputation. Iron content has been variously given as 68.47 pct to 68.825 pct. A recent United Nations survey gave it first place, surplanting the previously top-rated Swedish product. The first shipment of Liberian ore to the United States reached Baltimore in June, 1952 and went into blast furnaces at Republic Steel's Cleveland plant, where excellent results were reported. The physical make-up of the ore was hard, dense lumps, free of fines and with ideal size distribution. The Bomi hills mines were scheduled to be in full operation by the end of 1952. At the close of 1951, 200,000 tons of ore had been delivered to Baltimore. Liberian Mining Co. states that production is about 90,000 tons of ore per month at present. Between 1200 and 1500 men are employed at the mine site, with about 25 pct of them Americans. The Bomi Hill project was financed with the aid of the Export Import bank, which loaned Liberia Mining part of the sum needed to initiate and put the development into production. No definite expansion plans are in the making but extensive diamond drilling is being pursued. Original estimates of annual production for Bomi Hills ran in the neighborhood of 1.5 million tons, but the figure is no longer applicable. Liberia's potential as an iron producing country has been known for a long time, but the physical obstacles in the way of large scale production were such as to prohibit even contemplation of the project. Until recent years, the only route from the mine site to Monrovia was a foot trail. Once to the coast, over swamps and unbridged rivers, the ore was still useless because of the lack of loading facilities. Transportation Solved One problem was solved with the completion of the artificial harbor at Monrovia. Harbor construction was well under way when the mine project began in 1948. The island location of Monrovia also made the building of a bridge across the St. Paul River necessary. The 980 ft reinforced concrete structure, accommodating railroad and vehicular traffic, was opened in 1949. Meanwhile, preliminary work on railroad construction started. Grading was completed quickly. In April, 1951, the first train made the trip from Monrovia to the Bomi Hills. About half of the cost of the entire project went into railroad construction. More than 2200 men, often forced to resort to primitive methods, were engaged in clearing a path through the heavy forests between the mine and port. Swamps were drained and filled, and bridges, including the William V. S. Tubman, named for the Liberian President, were constructed. At the port, a Robbins Conveyor Belt Co., orehandling plant was installed. Ships can be loaded from the stockpile at the rate of 3000 tons per hr and vessels need spend only one day in port. Liberian Mining is operating under an 80 year lease, giving the company exclusive mining rights to all minerals, except gold, platinum, and diamonds, within a 40 mile radius of Bomi Hills. The contract provides a fixed royalty to the Liberian Government of five cents per ton of ore extracted, and a premium -based on the New York market price for Bessemer-grade pig iron. Miscible displacement in both thewetting and non-wetting phase has been studied in two-phase systems. Experimental data show that dispersion is a function of saturation and cannot be predicted from dispersion theory developed for single-phase miscible displacement. Some of the effect of saturation on dispersion is a result of the development of dead-end pores or a dendritic pore structure in multiphase systems. The presence of dead-end pores or dendritic structure is confirmed by pressure transient studies. INTRODUCTION Displacement by flooding with a miscible liquid is a possible means for recovering the estimated two-thirds of the oil that remains behind after primary production. The immense economic importance of a process that can recover such large quantities of oil has led to extensive laboratory studies of miscible displacement. As usual in production research, most laboratory studies of miscible displacement have not attemped to reproduce all of the conditions existing in a petroleum reservoir. In the early stages of investigation the need has been for information on the broad, basic principles of the phenomena involved in miscible displacement. The effects of overburden pressure, reservoir temperature, and wettability have been considered of secondary importance. However, one property of a petroleum reservoir which is expected to be of major importance and yet has been omitted from many laboratory studies is the presence of interstitial water. Two possible effects of interstitial water on the displacement mechanism in the hydrocarbon phase immediately come to mind. First, from the general1y accepted theory that capillarity governs the distribution of oil and water in porous rock one would expect that for water-wet rock the water will be in the small pores and oil in the large pores. A miscible displacement of oil carried out in the presence of water is operating in a pore size distribution shown in Fig. lb, whereas if the same test had been performed with only one phase present the pore size distribution is as shown in Fig. la. Although there is not yet a theory of miscible displacement which explains in detail the effect of pore size distribution, one would expect the differences between Figs. la and lb to influence the displacement efficiency. A second factor which may make a multiphase system different from a single-phase system is the presence in the multiphase system of dead-end pores or dendritic structure. Experiments of various kinds on reservoir rock have led to the belief that all pores in the network structure of a porous rock take part in conducting fluid during single phase fluid flow.1,2 There are then no dead-end pores and no fingers or dendritic structures containing stagnant fluid. The phase diagram of the system Pb-In has been investigated between -27° and + 40°C, using nzainly X-ray dijfraction. In accordance with t her mo dynamic measurements by Heumann and Predel, a segregation occurs at low temperatures, though not in the form of a nziscibility gap. THE phase diagram of the system Pb-In has been the subject of extensive investigations,1&apos;1 but recently Heumann and prede13 concluded from their thermodynamic data that a new feature should occur below room temperature. These authors observed that the maximum values for the enthalpy and entropy of mixing, which occurred at a composition of 50 at. pct Pb, were +400 and —1.7 cal per g-atom deg, respectively. From this the authors estimated that a miscibility gap should occur below 30°C, centered at 50 at. pct Pb. Resistivity measurements seemed to support this view. These authors proposed the phase diagram outlined in Fig. 1. Three phases exist at 30°C: the tetragonal indium phase with c/a > 1, the tetragonal intermediate phase a, with c/a < 1, and the fcc lead phase. During an investigation of the superconducting properties of Pb-In alloys. it has been observed4 that aging a specimen with 50 at. pct Pb for 14 days at -18°C decreased the superconducting transition temperature about 0.13"K and tripled the transition width. In this paper, the results of an investigation of the Pb-In phase diagram in the temperature range from — 2T to +40°C are reported. Superconductivity and X-ray methods have been used. 1) SPECIMEN PREPARATION The materials were provided by the American Smelting and Refining Co. According to the manufacturer their purity was 99.999 pct. The weighed amounts of the constituents were sealed in quartz tubes under an atmosphere of 10 torr helium, mixed for 24 hr in a rocking furnace at 380°C, quenched in ice water, and homogenized at 20" to 30°C below the solidus line, established by Heumann and Predel. The annealing times were 144 hr for specimens containing Less than 30 at. pct Pb and 36 hr for the remainder. 2) SUPERCONDUCTIVITY EXPERIMENTS The specimens were quenched from the homogeniza-tion treatment into ice water and their superconducting transition temperatures T, measured. The procedure used has been described in Ref. 4. The transition was detected by the change of the mutual induc- tance of two coaxial coils containing the sample. T, was defined as the temperature at which 50 pct of the total change in inductance had occurred. The repro-ducibility with which T, could be measured was i0.002"K. Then the specimens with lead contents between 38 and 75 at. pct were aged for 7 days at temperatures between -30" and 40°C. If this treatment caused T, to change by more than 0.005"K or the width of the transition to increase by more than 0.002"K, it was concluded that the specimen had undergone a phase change and no longer consisted only of the fcc lead phase: as it did immediately after homogenizing. The result is shown in Fig. 2. From this one can estimate at what temperatures and concentrations phase changes occur. The X-ray measurements were based on these preliminary results. 3) X-RAY EXPERIMENTS Because of the softness of the material, relatively coarse powders. 75 p, had to be used, which were filed in a helium atmosphere from homogenized specimens. The powders were annealed at least 30 min at temperatures between 120" and 16OJC, depending on their concentration, and quenched in ice water. Then their X-ray patterns were taken at -178°C with a Picker diffractometer, model 3488K, and a cold stage. on which the specimen was in thermal contact with a liquid-nitrogen reservoir. In this way the following relation was established for the fcc lead phase: a = 4.697 + 0.00247C for 40 5 C 5 75 11 where n is the lattice constant (A) and C is the at. pct of lead. The coarseness of the powder made it impossible to use lines with 0 > 75 deg; therefore n was averaged from lines with 45 deg 5 0 5 75 deg. The results were reproducible to within i0.05 pct. Relation [I] is very similar to the one found by Heumann and Predel at room temperature. Following this, homogenized specimens with compositions between 15 and 56 at. pct Pb were aged for at least 10 days at temperatures between -27" and
