Feldspar has been separated from silica by cationic collector using hydrofluoric acid as an activator of feldspar (1,2). Recently, one of the authors developed a new flotation process separating feldspar from quartz without using hydrofluoric acid. Presently, some silica sand mills are operating to introduce this process in Japan (3). In this flotation, feldspar is floated from silica using normal alkyltri-methylene diamine acetate together with sodium petroleum sulfonate as collectors in a hydrochloric or sulfuric acid circuit of about pH 2. From fundamental studies, it was found that, though the aliphatic diamine by itself did not adsorb on feldspar sufficiently to give a satisfying flotation in acidic circuit., the adsorption of collector was promoted by the simultaneous use of petroleum sulfonate and resulted in sufficient flotation of feldspar. On the other hand, quartz did not float in this flotation process. The application of this flotation was attempted for some types of natural samples and satisfying results were obtained. Further, an example of practical plant was introduced and the advantages in the process are emphasized.

THE methods employed for the determination of oxides and oxygen in ferrous materials may be roughly classed in two groups, "wet" methods and "hot" methods, the first group including the iodine, electrolytic, mercuric chloride, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and chlorine methods; the second group including the vacuum-fusion and hydrogen-reduction methods. The wet methods depend upon preferential solubility in a selected medium to separate the metallic portion of the sample from the oxygen-containing constituents. Subsequent analysis of the insoluble residue permits the isolation and separate determination of individual oxides and compounds. The hot methods depend upon the reduction of the oxide constituents of the sample by means of carbon or hydrogen at elevated temperatures. With the exception of the recently developed fractional vacuum-fusion method, the hot methods do not identify individual oxides and compounds but yield only a single value represent-ing the sum of the oxygen contents of several or all of the oxide con-stituents present. With such diversity in the principles and. aims of the different groups, it is not surprising that concordance of results by differ-ent methods has usually been difficult to obtain. The present cooperative attempt to define more rigorously than has been possible heretofore the accuracy and limits of usefulness of the vari-ous methods, originated in correspondence between Dr. John Johnston, Director of Research of the United States Steel Corporation, and other interested metallurgists. The plan was, briefly, to submit identical samples to a number of laboratories for analysis by different methods and to collate the results of these analyses. The project was endorsed by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metal-lurgical Engineers at the annual meeting in February, 1933, and has been conducted under the joint sponsorship of the Iron and Steel Division and the National Bureau of Standards. Laboratory displacement tests were performed to study oil recovery elficiency by gravity drainage in fractured systems under miscible conditions. The porous media used were cylindrical Berea and Blue Jacket sandstone cores containing a number of well-defined, artificially formed, vertical and subvertical fractures. Butane and Soltrol 130 were the two miscible fluids used. The purpose of the study was to examine the influences of the displacement rate, fracture density, fracture orientation, fracture permeability, matrix permeability, crossflow, core length and connate water on the oil recovery. It was found that displacement rate, matrix permeability and the subvertical fractures affected oil recovery most. The critical flow rate, based on the matrix permeability, was found to be a significant factor in the process. For displacement rates below the critical flow rate, the oil recovery efficiency appeared to be unaffected by the density of the subvertical fractures. At the high displacement rates, the fracture density becomes important, with the recovery being the most efficient in the core having the greatest number of the subvertical fractures. The magnitude of the fracture permeability, the fracture orientation, the core length and the connate water have little effect on the oil recovery efficiency. INTRODUCTION Gravity drainage under miscible conditions from relatively thick reservoirs can be a very efficient recovery process, especially at low flow rates where the gravity forces are dominant and, consequently, the adverse viscous fingers associated with the unfavorable viscosity ratio are minimized or eliminated. Such a process might involve injection of an LPG or some solvent bank at the crest and then driving the bank with dry gas. For some favorable combination of reservoir temperature, pressure and oil composition, there may be no need to inject any solvent bank, since enrichment of the dry gas by the light ends of the crude creates an in-situ solvent bank. Slobod and Howlett2 have studied the effects of gravity segregation in vertical unconsolidated porous media under miscible conditions in the laboratory. The main variables in their study were the viscosity ratio, the density differences and the rate of flow. In this study, the objective was to find the influence of fractures on gravity drainage under miscible conditions. A greater number of related variables were also studied. LABORATORY STUDY CORE DESCRIPTION Displacement tests were performed mostly in cylindrical Berea sandstone cores. In a few cases in which a much lower matrix permeability was desired, Blue Jacket sandstone cores were used. The vertical fractures were formed by cutting the cores with a thin circular blade or by parting them along a bedding plane. The vertical fracture plane always contained the axis of the cylindrical core. The subvertical fractures, cut with a saw, were inclined 45' from the horizontal. The line of intersection between the planes of the vertical and subvertical fractures was parallel to the circular faces of the cores in all cases except one, as depicted by VF3HF-2 in Fig. 1. Fracture geometry of the other cores is also given in Fig. 1. Tables 1 and 2 give the physical properties of the solid and fractured cores, respectively. The suffixes and prefixes shown for each core have been used throughout the paper so that the reader may discern the fracture geometry from the core numbers.

A summary of recent progress in understanding the main factors affecting the pelletization of fine particles is presented. A scheme for categorizing the mechanisms responsible for pellet growth is out- lined and laboratory methods to both identify the important growth mechanisms and quantify the effects of the major factors influencing the rate of pelletization are described. Next laboratory and mathematical simulations of the commercial process involved in pelletizing iron ore concentrates, are presented. The operational instabilities associated with this pelletization process are described and subjected to a control theory analysis. This analysis, in conjunction with the mathematical models, is used to both explain existing control problems and assess the effectiveness of possible circuit redesigns at producing a more stable and controllable operation. Although much of the discussion is in the context of iron ore pelletizing the approach developed to analyze the agglomeration behavior of these concentrates should apply to most other fine particle systems.

A semiquantitative method for measuring the wettability of reservoir rocks has been developed. These data are needed for reservoir analysis and for interpretation of laboratory displacement studies. The wettability of a core sample is measured by the contact angle for the system oil-water-solid. These contact angles are calculated from the displacement pressure (threshold pressure) obtained by use of the centrifuge, using first oil-water and second air-oil in the same core sample. This method is based on the assumption that the air-oil and oil-water interfaces occupy similar positions in the porous medium when desaturation of the wetting phase is initiated. The assumption is also made that the Contact angle for the air-oil-solid system which is close to zero in value does not change appreciably even when the contact angle for the oil-water-solid system experiences marked changes. "Apparent contact angles'' for five different solids ranging from 31" to 82" have been determined, and changes irr the "apparent contact angle" of a given sample with laboratory use from 33" to 53' {lave been observed. INTRODUCTION Reservoir rocks vary in their wettability, 1,2,3,4 some being preferentially water wet while other are apparently preferentially oil wet. The degree of wettability, in theory, is measured quantitatively by the contact angle for the system solid-oil-water, hut in 1)practice this quantity is extremely difficult to determine." The need for obtaining some measure of this quantity has become obvious in recent years as a result of both laboratory. and field observations. Several reservoir.: such as the Bradford Sand in Pennsylvania and the Wilcox' at Oklahoma City are reported to be oil wet. If these report:: correctly reflect the true nature of the surface of the rock in the ground, then these reservoirs probably will not perform as predicted on the basis of a water wet rock. In the laboratory many core samples have been Observed to be oil wet. These samples, while perhaps not correctly representing the reservoir, have markedly different properties from water wet rock. The location of the phases is different (oil is in contact with rock instead of water), and other quantities such as the connate water, the capillary pressure curve; residual oil. relative permeabilities. and the recovery of oil by water flooding are markedly affected by the value of the contact -4 A further complication observed in the laboratory is the chang-ing of the wettability of a rock specimen with use. such changes mean that repeat runs on the same core are not the duplicate tests desired, but represent new experiments on a more oil wet material. The changes in surface characteristics are sometimes so rapid that by the time an experiment requiring several days is completed, the results may not be representative of the core as originally described, The, rock material itself (Silica. carbonates. etc.), whell Clean and uncontaminated, is water wet. There seems b( : little evidence of the presence of oil wet minerals such as heavy metal sulfides. The oil wetness of reservoir samples, therefore, is believed to be caused by the accumulation of an adsorbed film in which the polar group of a large organic. molecule is adsorbed on the surface leaving the organic or hydrocarbon part of the molecule projecting out from the solid. Such a surface is much more readily wet 17" oil than by water. These considerations indicate the need for a method which will provide some measure of tile wettalbility (Contact(angle if possible) for reservoir rock ..samples) The method should be capable of (1.1 distinguishing between tile wettalility of dif. ferent formation,.. (2) detecting (change. ill wettalbility of a core with use. and (3) measuring the changes in Wettability which may be accomplished with cleaning operations. such as the use of sodium silicate for increasing water wrettalbility." It is not often that a mining district is discovered, opened up, exploited and developed into a rich producer within the space of three or four years. Not until the year 1903 was the existence of the rich cobalt-nickel arsenides and silver of Northern Ontario even suspected by the mining public. But it is worthy of record that Dr. W. G. Miller, the man who has done so much to develop sanely and honestly the mineral resources of Ontario, pointed out [ ] the possibilities of this region at least two years before the first discovery was made. . Dr. Miller, then Professor of Geology at the School of Mining, Kingston, Ont., referred in these words to the district: "It will be seen from what has been stated on preceding pages that the district examined contains as great a variety of rocks as probably any part of the Province of equal area . . . PURE metallic tantalum, from a practical standpoint, is one of the newer developments in the metal field. Although it was used as filament in incandescent lamps in 1906, only within the last five years has the metal been available in sufficient quantity and suitable form for more general application. In addition to corrosion-resisting properties and high melting point, the metal has an ability to withstand unusual amounts of cold working. It affords some striking demonstrations of block movement during plastic flow.

The traces of fossils herein described were discovered in or upon piles or heaps of iron-ores upon the docks at Erie, Pa. The author has worked among these ore-piles since 1890, when his attention was first directed to what looked like organic remains upon certain specimens collected. All the specimens described and figured herein were found by him, and, as no ironore is used at Erie, and no other iron-ores, save those of the Lake Superior region, find their way to the stock-piles at this place, there can be no question but that the specimens in question are genuine ore transported from that region over the great lakes, and cannot have been brought in from other ironore regions. The author has reason to think that no fossil remains have been reported hitherto as occurring in the iron-ores of the Lake Superior region, and he believes that these specimens, however imperfect, rank among the oldest forms of which man has any knowledge. The illustrations are engraved from photographs of drawings. The specimens themselves have not been photographed, because their condition would have prevented bringing out, by that process of reproduction, all the markings as clearly as is necessary, and would have rendered the specimens otherwise less distinct by reason of the blotchy character of their colors, the presence of cracks, or of marks more or less in contact with those of the organisms. In drawing these remains, therefore, I left out everything upon the specimens of ore that did not seem to belong in any way or contribute to their value as illustrations of the fossils. According to information obtained from the dock superintendent at Erie, Pa., the majority of these specimens came from the Chapin mine, Iron Mountain, Menominee range, Mich. This paper deals principally with investigations undertaken by the Welding Research Sub-committee of the Welding Committee of the Emergency Fleet Corporation. The general object of the investigations has been to extend the use of welding in the construction of merchant ships and, specifically, to provide a definite basis for obtaining the greatest economy and efficiency in employing welding in place of riveting in the construction of the hulls of such ships. Composition of_ Ship-plate Steel The chemical composition of the steel employed in such hull construction varies with the thickness of the plates. Through the courtesy of Mr. H. Jasper Cox, of Lloyd's Register of Shipping, the following information may be given concerning the kind of steel plate employed in American shipyards in 1918 for the hull construction of merchant ships. Lloyd's requirements do not relate to the chemical composition. They require a tensile strength of 58,000 lb. per sq. in. (40.75 kg. per sq. mm.) for their lower limit and 72,000 lb. per sq. in. (50.59 kg. per sq. mm.) for their upper limit. THE CHAIRMAN (H. W. MORSE).-Gentlemen, for the first time in the history of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, we have a full session on the subject of leaching-especially on the leaching of copper ores.. This branch of metallurgy is rather in its infancy. We have had one big plant running for a year or more, and pretty successfully; and another one which will be started in February or March, the New Cornelia. We have another one at Garfield for the Utah company, which is just designed and construction begun; and from several other points come reports of interesting test work. The first paper on the program this evening is one of some of the test work on the New Cornelia ore by myself and Mr. H. A. Tobelmann. LAWRENCE ADDICKS, New York, N. Y. Anderson, mining engineer and geologist, has resigned from the Raw Materials Div. of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission where he was assistant chief of the Denver Exploration Branch. He will enter private practice in Golden, Colo. James E. Atkinson, consulting mining engineer and geologist, left New York for Colombia, S. A., as general manager for Cia Minera Choco-Pacifico, S. A., operating five dredges in gold and platinum on the Pacific coast of Colombia. Russell H. Bennett has been elected a director of Placer Development, Ltd. with head office in Vancouver, B. C., and is also a director of its subsidiary, Canadian Exploration, Ltd., which mines and mills lead, zinc, and tungsten ores at a property near Salmo, B. C.

The influence of the collector structure on the amine (RNH2, R=alkyl) flotation of quartz has been systematically investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. This study focuses on the effect of varying chain length, branching in the alkyl group R, polyfunctionality of the collector molecule, and alkyl substitution on the nitrogen atom. In addition, adsorption at the solution/air interface and electrokinetic results for the solid/solution interface were employed to further elucidate the role ad the interrelation of the structural parameters in the flotation process. Estimates of an electrical double layer attractive energy between the bubble and the solid particle are made.

Various studies have estimated that for the next few decades, about half of all new power plants will be nuclear. The other half will be fueled with coal. Pending legislation on air pollution control would require all new coal-fueled power plants to install stack gas scrubbers or other technology to reduce sulfur oxide (SO,) emissions. These regulations would require flue gas desulfurization (FGD) or other technology for SO, reduction even on lower sulfur western coals. Among the options for FGD are single or dual alkali throw away processes using lime or limestone as the major reagent. These processes are currently more economically attractive than recovery processes, such as magnesium oxide and Wellman- Lord, that produce a salable product such as sulfur or sulfuric acid. One of the major problem areas with the throw away processes is disposal of the thrown away solid wastes, primarily calcium sulfite (CaSO3) and calcium sulfate (CaS04). Coal ash also must be disposed of, even if SOx reduction is not required. This paper addresses the alternatives for handling and disposal of throw away lime, limestone, and dual alkali process solid wastes. Advantages, disadvantages, and the economics of various methods are discussed. Both large central station power plants (500-1000 MW capacity) and smaller industrial power plants (up to 100 MW capacity) are considered. High sulfur eastern coals (53% S) and lower sulfur (3 1% S) western coals are considered.

A simple and inexpensive mercury-tracer method has been develohed to study rates and Patterns of gas flow in blast furnaces. A Pulse of mercury is injected into the hot blast, and its arrival at the sampling Point is recorded by an electronic circuit that measures resonant absorbtion of ultraviolet light by mercury vapor in the gas aspirated .through the detecting. cell. A rapidly developing interest in blast-furnace technology in recent years has created a strong demand for precise knowledge of the rates and patterns of gas movement through the stock column. Classical fluid-flow theory cannot supply the desired information because the complexity of the blast-furnace situation precludes the accurate determination of many of the parameters required for solution of the equations. In fact some of the terms employed in fluid-flow treatments become almost meaningless under blast-furnace conditions. The void fraction of the stock column, for example, varies widely from place to place and is affected by the segregation of charge materials, attrition of lumps during descent, and channeling. Gas density varies with changes in local pressure, temperature, and composition, while viscosity varies with temperature and composition. Even if mean values for these functions were acceptable, they would be either impossible or extremely difficult to determine with a high degree of accuracy since the value of the mean for all gas properties would depend upon the flow distribution itself. Attempts to study gas movement by the pitot-tube determination of kinetic pressures have met with little acceptance. Reproducibility of results is extremely difficult to achieve in a situation where alignment of the tube orifice with respect to the flow direction in tortuous channels cannot be guaranteed. Because of these difficulties it would appear that progress can be achieved only with a direct method of measuring gas velocities and determining the shape of flow paths through the stock. The establishment of such a method is described in this paper. SELECTION OF METHOD Direct measurement suggests the use of a tracer by means of which the progress of a "parcel" of gas can be followed through the furnace. Several requirements must be met before any selected material can be considered a suitable tracer. First of all, it must be a substance not normally present in blastfurnace gas or dust; otherwise its presence in a gas sample will have little significance. It should be volatile at temperatures normally existing within the furnace, to ensure that it will travel with the gas, as a gas. It should possess special properties enabling its presence in the gas to be detected readily, and it should not undergo exchange reactions with any material normally present within the furnace, including refractories and coke as well as all components of the metal and slag. Radioactive materials naturally are considered because their radioactivity renders them susceptible to detection. However, of the many radioactive materials available, almost all are eliminated from final consideration by their unsuitability in terms of other properties. Radioactive silicon, carbon, calcium, phosphorus, and many others have been considered and discarded, either because they are not volatile over the whole range of significant temperatures, or because they could be expected to undergo exchange reactions with burden or refractory materials. Others which might be suitable in terms of these properties are eliminated because of a low activity, short half life, or the necessity for fragile counting apparatus. Of the many elements available in radioactive form, perhaps radon is the only one suitable for blast-furnace gas-flow studies. This has been used in several investigations1-4 with considerable success. The use of radiotracers has certain inherent disadvantages. One is the cost. An appreciable sum must be allowed for materials each time a test is made. THE first plans were made in 1930 for the mining by open-pit methods of the low-grade disseminated ore body now known as the Morenci open pit. It was not until 1937, however, that final plans were completed and the decision reached to go ahead with the actual development. Many advances were made in open-pit mining equipment during that period of seven years, therefore the ways and means of attack actually used were very different from those originally contemplated. Diesel-operated bulldozers, big trucks, full-revolving electric shovels and electric churn drills constitute the major equipment finally purchased for this modern stripping operation. Neither the bulldozers nor the big trucks were considered in the early operating plans, for at that time bulldozers had not, been used in mining operations and the trucks as yet were undesigned. The full-revolving shovel and the churn drills were not new developments in open-pit equipment, but both had undergone remarkable manufacturing transition, emerging far more efficient and far more dependable than their predecessors. Even the ordinary drilling steel had been fundamentally changed. It was now threaded so that the dulled cutting bits could be detached and replaced, thus eliminating the costly transportation of long bars to the drill shop for resharpening. The decision to use trucks in the preliminary stripping operations was based on the desirability of this type of transportation to economi-cally prepare the pit for rail haulage, coupled with the success that the contractors had had with them on other big excavation jobs. There are at present no plans for the use of trucks beyond the preliminary work, inasmuch as rail haulage will give lower costs after roadbeds and benches are once established.

The purpose of this paper is to start a discussion on: (I) methods of supporting the immediate roof, particularly of local areas of poor roof, during the mechanical loading of coal; (2) methods of increasing the rapidity of the movement of the mining faces so that, without the use of cribs, jacks, park walls, and filling, there will be no danger to men, equipment, and working places from the subsidence of the overlying strata. In the Pittsburgh district the application of mechanical loading devices in mines working in the Pittsburgh seam has been retarded by the difficulties of holding and handling the draw slate. Normally the thickness of this slate averages about 8 in. but the hardness varies, and a cut of coal cannot always be loaded without placing posts or crossbars to support the slate. Locally, the slate may be thicker and special methods of support may be required. If crossbars are placed to hold the slate when the coal averages 5 ft. in thickness, the standard methods of transporting the coal cannot be followed, and the use of conveyors may be desirable. Very little information is available on the effect of increasing the rate of movement of advancing or retreating break lines or longwall faces. A few British publications have presented some data but all such data relate to longwall faces that have moved not more than 6 ft. a day. The most rapid rate of movemerit of longwall faces in Germany is 6 ft. per day. In the ordinary hand-loading mine in western Pennsylvania break lines on full retreat will move about 2 ft. per day. If loading machines are used under similar conditions the rate of retreat may reach 4 ft. per day. In a mine where coal is loaded by hand on conveyors three shifts per day, the rate of retreat has ranged from 11 to 16 ft. per day, with an average of 13 ft.
