Comparatively little has been published relating practical experience with the control of the solid content of washery water systems that must be "closed." A "closed" system is one that for some reason may not be cleaned by the emission Of any effluent Of high ''lid 'content to be rep1aced by 'lean water in Order to hold the solid content of the waste water within reasonable bounds for efficient washing. It is the Purpose of this Paper to describe practical experience with such a water system and to present data that it is hoped may be of some use to those who are faced with a similar problem. The washery clarification system described comprises three thickeners and three filters, and although it is admitted that each of the fields of water settling and thickening and filtration offers a wide scope for investigation, the authors are not attempting to present the answers to these problems but to set down the results of some experience along these lines, making no claims as to the ultimate solution of the problems in hand. The subject of water clarification has vast ramifications; for example, the science of flocculation as applied to water settlillg and filtering opens up fields of wide possibilities of which as yet little is known. A comparatively recent entry into the field of water treatment, which may offer possibilities of practical application, is the use of "wetting" agents such as "Aerosol." General Arrangement of Water System So that the reader may obtain a comprehensive picture of the factors concerned in the control of a closed water system, it is necessary to give a brief description of the washing plant that is serviced by the water system to be described in the following pages. As we are not primarily concerned with the washing plant in detail, only a brief description of the flow of coal as it relates to the water system will be given here. For a more detailed account of this type of washer, the reader is referred to earlier papers,1,2 The washer, which handles o to 4-in, raw coal (750 tons per hour) is an American Rheolaveur plant of two complements; the coarse coal or sealed discharge plant and the fine coal or free discharge plant. The sealed discharge plant (Fig. I) consists of twin 48.in. primary launders, each having two washing boxes, supplemented by one 32-in. rewash launder, which also has two washing boxes. "Push" water for washing and conveying coal in these launders is supplied from a constant-head tank under pressure head of 10½ ft. at the point of introduction at the feed end of the launder. This tank also supplies water for upward or vertical currents used in the Rheolaveur or washing boxes. Each box discharges into a sealed boot elevator (Fig. I).

Treatment of the breaker wash-water discharges to remove the suspended particles of finely divided material is usually most efficiently and economically accomplished in settling or thickening tanks. The purpose of these tanks is to separate the excess water from the solids by sedimentation whereby the solid particles suspended in the water are thickened by the force of gravity. The water overflowing these tanks is either reused for coal cleaning or discharged directly to the streams. The settled solids, which are in a relatively concentrated condition, forming a sludge or thick pulp, can be disposed of by pumping to a storage dam, by slushing into mine workings, by processing for recovery of coal, or filtering by vacuum or centrifugal means and discharging with the breaker refuse. The scope of this paper will be limited to the discussion of settling and thickening equipment, the factors that influence the settlement of solids, and a brief description of tests that can be made to determine the size of settling facilities required for any particular condition. The practical application of sedimentation to the treatment of coal falls into two groups, one of classification or hydro-separation, and the other of clarification and thickening. Classification may be employed to prepare a relatively low-grade fuel, which can be used as is or can be further processed separately. Clarification and thickening is employed where the primary objective is to recover a relatively dewatered solid and return a satisfactorily clear water to breaker or streams. Operation and Types oF Settling Equipment When a stream of water flows across a tank, the time required for a particle to travel from the feed inlet to the overflow must be a little greater than that required for the finest particles or flocs in the feed to settle out of the stream. Theoretically, the liquid in a settling tank should rise at a more or less constant rate throughout the area of the tank Under these conditions the rising velocity of the water must be less than the settling rate of the finest particles if clarification is to be obtained. When classification of particles is to be made in the tank, the overflow velocity must be greater than the settling velocity of the particles that are to be removed with the tank overflow. The performance of a settling tank, then, depends on the settling rate of the solids and the current velocities in the tank. The oldest types of sedimentation employ intermittent types of settling tanks of any convenient shape. Means are provided for filling the tank with pulp and allowing it to settle until quiet, for moving the clean liquor and for removing the thickened sludge. The operation is necessarily intermittent but a sufficient number of tanks is employed so that a continuous flow of clear water is maintained. A general rate equation is derived for gas -solid reactions in metallurgical processes by considering the contributions of chemical reaction at inter-phase boundaries and diffusion through the solid product layer simultaneously. This equation takes care of the whole range continuously from purely diffusion control to purely chemical reaction control. The parabolic law,' McKewan's equationa derived with the assumption of interface area control and the equation derived by Kawasaki et al. with the assumption of purely diffusion control are found as the limiting cases of the corresponding forms of the general rate equation. Many metallurgical processes involving gas-solid reactions have been extensively studied. The common examples of these processes include the reduction of oxides to metallic products, the roasting of sulfides to oxides or chlorides and the oxidation of metals. Gas-solid reactions consist of at least two kinds of steps; one involves the transport of reactant and product to and from the reaction zone and the other is the chemical reaction taking place at the interphase boundaries. In the limiting cases one or the other of the above mentioned steps will be much slower than the other and is then rate controlling. For example, the oxidation of metals is diffusion controlled and obeys the parabolic law.' On the other hand, if the diffusion rate is much larger than the chemical reaction rate then it will be controlled by the chemical reaction rate. This latter case occurs for the reduction of iron oxides studied by McKewan. If the rate of diffusion and of the chemical reaction have the same order of magnitude, a more detailed analysis is necessary. Thus at the beginning of the reaction when the solid and gaseous reactants are in direct contact, the reaction should be chemical reaction rate controlled as no diffusion process is involved. At the other extreme as the reaction zone moves further into the solid, the diffusion distance becomes greater and the diffusion rate continuously decreases. Eventually, therefore, for a sufficiently large sample the rate must become diffusion controlled. As the transition from one controlling step to the other must be continuous, we cannot describe this transition period by either of the two limiting cases. In this paper the author attempts to derive a general rate equation for gas-solid reaction systems. This is effected by considering the rates of diffusion and chemical reaction simultaneously from the state of pure diffusion control to pure chemical reaction control. I) DERIVATION The system under consideration is made of at least three phases, namely the gaseous one, the solid reactant, and the solid product as shown in Fig. 1. The notations are listed at the end of the paper. The mass transfer process involves the diffusion of reactants and products across the solid product layer. It is reasonable to consider that no chemical reaction will take place in the solid product layer with respect to both gaseous reactant and product. For the characteristics of local equilibrium of the system, the diffusion process is really in a quasi-steady-state. It will be proved in the following paragraphs. Then we can invoke the law of conservation of mass valid for all chemical species passing through the layer. This paper describes the development of a continuous float-and-sink process to produce coal low enough in ash content to be suitable for production of electrodes. The cleaned coal had a combined iron and silicon content of 0.239 pct. The efficiency of recovery was 84 pct. DURING World War I1 the demand for electrode carbon was greater than could be met by the supply of petroleum coke available for this use. It was believed that coke made from an extremely low-ash coal might be a suitable substitute for petroleum coke. Requirements for electrode carbon to be used for the production of aluminum are that the silicon plus iron content shall be not more than 0.14 pct of the coke. However, during the period when petroleum coke was in short supply, it appeared that relaxations of the specifications might be allowed to permit 0.4 pct iron plus silicon in the coke. For this work, the specifications were that the coal should contain less than 1 pct of ash, and the combined iron and silicon content of the coal should not exceed 0.28 pct. Heavy-liquid separations made on a number of coals showed that if certain size fractions of some coals Were separated at low specific gravities the resulting float products would meet the required specifications. The objective of this work was to develop a continuous, commercially feasible process for producing low-ash coal. After consideration of various processes, the method chosen was a float-and-sink separation using a solution of calcium chloride as the separating medium. Eagle Seam coal was used for the experiments. The —10 +35 mesh fraction was found to be the most promising feed for producing the low-ash content coal. A batch of 30 tons of — --in. coal was screened at 10 and 35 mesh; the yield of —10 +35 mesh was 20 pct of the feed. This fraction comprised the feed for the separation tests. In spite of the fact that this portion was screened a second time at 35 mesh, the coal still contained 16 pct that was finer than 35 mesh. Three-fourths of the undersize was in the —35 +48 mesh range. A representative portion of the —10 +35 mesh fraction was subjected to batch float-and-sink separations to determine the best gravity to be used in the continuous tests to obtain a high recovery of low-ash content coal. The heavy liquid used was a mixture of carbon tetrachloride and benzene which assured complete wetting of all of the particles. As usual in batch separations, adequate time was allowed for each separation so that even the near gravity particles had ample time to separate. The separations were made at increments of 0.01 sp gr from 1.25 to 1.28 and also at 1.32 and 1.59. Each specific-gravity increment was assayed for ash content. From these data it was concluded that 1.27 sp gr was best for the continuous separation of the coal. The products from the batch separation were composited into float 1.27 and sink 1.27 sp-gr fractions; these were assayed for ash, iron, and silicon. Table I shows the results of the batch separations. The composite float 1.27 fraction contained 66.04 pct of the total weight, and had an analysis of 0.79 pct ash, 0.073 pct iron, and 0.112 pct silicon, or 0.185 pct iron and silicon combined. These data are indicative of the results possible if a perfect separation is made at 1.27 sp gr under static conditions. Inasmuch as the method under investigation is a dynamic system these results could not be obtained. It remained to be determined, however, just how close to the theoretical results the actual continuous separation would be.

With the exception of the work of Tammann and Hartmann,1 no published information has been found on the structural changes produced in eutectic structures as the result of heating following plastic deformation. In part this lack of information may be due to the fact that many eutectic structures contain an intermetallic compound as a prominent phase, and as a consequence have been considered to be unworkable. For example, Tammann and Hartmann were able to obtain useful data only on those alloys that they could greatly reduce in thickness by cold rolling. This restriction placed on the investigation of alloys containing intermetallic compounds has been largely removed by the work of Savitskii2 which showed that large deformations of such alloys can be produced by relatively slow compression at temperatures near the melting range. It was possible, therefore, to carry out the present work on a range of binary eutectics including one composed of two intermetallic compounds. The essential results obtained on the alloy systems studied are illustrated by the Pb-Mg eutectic containing 33.2 pct Mg, Fig 1. The cast structure, Fig la, was obtained by melting together magnesium of 99.8 pct purity and chemically pure test lead, casting into a heated, small steel mold, and furnace cooling in the mold from about the eutectic temperature. The fairly coarse eutectic structure thus obtained was too brittle to work at room temperature without cracking. Fig 16 shows the worked structure obtained by compressing a 1/2-in. cube 70 pct in about 15 sec at 550°F and then water quenching. The pronounced changes in the distribution of the two phases produced by heating the worked alloy at 850°F for 1 hr are shown in Fig lc. Recrystallization of both phases appears to have taken place, and the mechanical properties of the cast alloy must have been significantly changed by the working and heat treatment. Similar results were obtained with the Mg-59.5 pet Bi, Mg-36.4 pet Sn, Mg-65.4 pet Cu, and Bi-40 pet Cd eutectics, only the last of which could be worked at room temperature. Tammann and Hartmann reported a thickening and shortening of the needles of the eutectics which they heated about 10°C below the melting range for 1 hr after drastic cold rolling. They found the following eutectics, given the indicated amounts of reduc- tion, to have a granular structure after heat treatment: Sn-9 pet Zn (98 pet); Cd-82.5 pet Pb (60 pet); and Bi-43.5 pet Pb (90 pet). On the other hand the alloy Al-11.7 pet Si (60 pet) showed no change after heating. Tammann and Hartmann observed a distinct shrinking of the needles in unworked eutectics subjected to heat-treatment. In the present work inappreciable change in the eutectic structure was found on heating undeformed alloys. In summary, it appears that eutectic structures can be recrystallized into a "spheroidized" condition by heating near the eutectic temperature after severe deformation. If the eutectic contains one or more brittle phases the necessary deformation can be accomplished by pressing at high temperatures. It is reasonable to expect that this tendency towards equiaxed grains from the plate- or needle-like eutectic structure should be general since the energy relations and mode of growth in recrystallization are so different from those that hold for eutectic crystallization. A simplified method for evaluating specific surface of porous media is described. The theory takes as its point of departure a previous statistical method. Due to its simplicity, it is considered that the proposed method has certain advantages over methods currently used. By making some simplifications, the procedure for estimating specific surface is reduced to superposing, on an enlarged reproduction of a section of the sample to be analyzed, an evenly spaced grid and counting the number of intersections of the grid lines with the perimeter of pores. An indirect test of the theory is presented and the advantages of the method are discussed. INTRODUCTION The specific surface of a porous medium, defined as the surface area of the pores per unit bulk volume, is an important parameter with regard to flow of fluids through porous materials. In particular, it has long been recognized that specific surface is closely related to permeability. Since the internal surface of any porous material is extremely complex, the measurement of specific surface can only be accomplished by indirect means. It is considered that the best method' in current use for determining specific surface is the statistical method of Chalkley, Cornfield and Parka who originally applied it for estimating volume-surface ratios of morphologic components, such as cells or nuclei. This method will be outlined later. A method which has been used extensively in determining specific surface is based on the adsorption of a vapor by the internal surface of porous media. However, this method does not yield the surface pertinent to fluid flow, since it includes the tiny molecular interstices which do not influence the permeability of the porous material.' This method has been employed by Brooks and Purcell measure internal surface area of sedimentary rocks. The Kozeny equation, which relates the specific surface to the permeability of a porous medium, has found wide use in determination of specific surface. However, the KOzeny equation is not strictly correct. Large discrepancies have been found between theory and experiments.' Consequently. the specific surface estimated by this method is subject to serious uncertainties. Finally, there are other methods for specific surface measurements which are based upon a variety of physical and chemical properties: the heat conduction by a gas, ionic adsorption phenomena and direct chemical reactions of the surface with other substances. This paper describes a simplified statistical method for determining specific surface of porous materials. It is considered that, due to its simplicity, it has certain advantages over the methods presently used. For its validity, it is required that the porous structure of the material under study be of a spatially random nature. This is not a serious limitation since the naturally occurring porous media have this characteristic. THEORY The method proposed in this paper takes as its point of departure the interesting result obtained by Chalkley et al The method shows that if a line of length r is dropped repeatedly at random over a section of a porous medium, and counts are made of the number of times the two end points fall within pore areas (denoted by h for "hits") and the number of times the line intersects the perimeter of pores (denoted by c for "cuts"), then in a very large number of throws where S is the internal surface of the sample (surface of pores) and V, the volume of the pores (Fig. 1). Since the specific surface S, and the porosity 4 are given, respectively, by S. = Sl V, and 4 = V,l V,, where V, is the total volume of the sample, it follows from Eq. 1

The partial persistence of grain size and grain shape on melting and resolidifying crystalline substances, as well as the general effects of pre-solidifi-cation and of superheating on nuclea-tion rate, have been attributed to the presence in the liquid of crystalline impurities bearing some structural relation to the principal solid and hence capable of serving as nuclei for its crystallization. That such lattice matching does sometimes occur is well established, but it is surely improbable that a compound possessing both high-temperature stability and the requisite structural similarity should be naturally available in almost every system. It is now suggested that a mechanism for producing appropriate nuclei exists in the crystallization of all but absolutely pure substances. Impurities can he of many kinds. Some will give rise to compounds that are less soluble in the solid crystal than in the liquid. A . crystal forming from a melt or solution containing these will be supersaturated in some degree, and the foreign atoms will commence to segregate during or after solidification. They do not necessarily form pure, unstrained, crystals of the precipitating compound with its normal composition and structure. Generally—at least in the metallurgical examples that have been most studied —the first recognizable nuclei have lattice coherency with the surrounding matrix and have practically the same crystal structure and lattice spacing as the material in which they form, differ- ing only in composition. An extremely thin oxide layer formed under appropriate conditions on or in a solid metal will tend to be coherent with the metal lattice, and the first few atom layers of the oxide in contact with the metal will differ in both composition and structure from massive crystalliue oxide. It will resemble the metal more closely than the oxide. If it did not subsequently change on melting, such an oxide film would constitute an almost perfect "template" or two-dimensional matrix to hold a few atoms of the primary metal in the exact array needed to form a nucleus for solidification. Any precipitating material will adopt the correct spacing over a few atom diameters, and with appropriate substitution of other atoms of the correct sizes a precipitate can match the parent lattice over large areas of cohererlce without excessive strain. In metals, the componentsof a host of oxides, silicides, borides, nitrides, carbides, sulphides, and other compounds are always present in minute amounts. Some of these will be eliminated because of extreme insolubility in the liquid, while others will remain soluble in the solid; occasionally, however, particles will be formed in the solid by coherent precipitation—not of pure substances, but of whatever assortment of atoms best satisfies the joint requirements of availability, affinity, and appropriate average atom size. Of these, many will disappear on melting, but a few will persist unmelted as little rafts of complex composition, maintaining in the liquid a surface of the exact geometry needed to nucleate the solid on subsequent cooling. Their number and size distribution will determine the resulting grain size; the dimensions of the largest will determine the degree of undercooling that can occur before solidification commences. A similar process may operate in the case of phase transformations in solids. The coherent precipitation of supersaturated minor constituents in a low-temperature phase should facilitate the nucleation of this phase on subsequent cooling after transforming into another phase at higher temperatures. At first sight this hypothesis may seem little different from the older ones. It should therefore be emphasized that it does not depend on chance to provide the right compound to form a nucleus, but postulates that every crystal, containing minute amourlts of any of a wide range of impurities, automatically engenders particles having the correct surface structure to serve as nuclei for subsequent solidification. It could operate in any system, metallic, organic, or inorganic. The suggested mechanism is closely analogous to the production of antibodies from antigens in living organisms—indeed, it was a description of the matrix theory of this process that suggested to the writer its crystalline analogue.

MARSHAL Foch has been made an honorary member of the four national American societies of civil, mining and metallurgical, mechanical, and electrical engineers. The governing bodies of these societies, aggregating 45,000 members, conferred this signal honor in expression of the appreciation of American engineers for the unmatched services of this master of engineering principles. At Engineering Societies Building, in New York City, on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 13, the presidents of the four societies presented one beautifully engrossed certificate of honorary membership in the four societies. The auditorium was filled so that not even standing room was left, more than a half hour before the cere-monies began, and the main entrance on the street had to be closed. J. Vipond Davies, president of the United Engineering Society, made the opening address. Col. William Barclay-Parsons, 'who was commander of the first engineer regiment to go abroad, addressed Marshal Foch in French. Colonel Parsons said: The art of engineering was defined a long time ago as "the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the use and convenience of man." No better definition can be found today. Of all the sources of power in nature, the greatest, the most valuable, and at the same time the most difficult to direct, is the energy of man himself. He who can direct human energy and turn it to the service of mankind is a great engineer. You, Marshal, have directed a greater mass of human energy than any other man has ever done. And you have successfully directed this mass for the highest uses of mankind, in that you by its aid have preserved for him one of the most precious of human possessions-liberty-liberty not only for your own illustrious country, but for all the nations of the world. The four national engineering societies, of the United States now desire to make record of their appreciation of this fact and to convey to you an expression of their most profound admiration for the great leader of men by conferring on you honorary member-ship in all the societies, the highest honor in their gift and one hitherto never conferred on a single individual. Four thousand members of these societies were enrolled in the armed service of the United States, the greater part of whom had the glorious distinction to serve the common cause in France under your orders. They heard the voice and they saw the hand of the master as he led them through battle to victory. Now we desire that you will still continue to lead us, but in peace, by permitting us to inscribe your name at the head of our roll of honor, where it will be, as your deeds have been, an example to us to do better work, and where it will remain forever a noble inspiration for all future generations. Marshal, in the name of those members of the societies who served under your orders and particularly .in the name of those who fell on the field of honor in France, I salute you.

OPERATING a "muck stick" never appealed to me. It always seemed a terrible waste of energy to "put rocks in the box" by hand-particularly when my own personal energy was involved. But during the past forty years, there have been periods-more or less extended when I was compelled, against my finer instincts, to muck or quit eating. For about the same length of time, I have devised schemes to make mucking faster and more painless. There was always something mechanically wrong with these designs-too many;" parts to wear out and need replacement, and excessive cost incidental to a complicated mechanism. Vapor transport experiments have been carried out in order to determine the saturation solubility of carbon in cobalt and nickel with respect to graphite over a large temperature range. Some of the uncertainty existing in the thermodynamics of these systems has been removed and accurate estimates of the heat and entropy of solution of carbon in nickel and cobalt have been deduced. The relatitle partial entropies of carbon are considered to be predominantly vibrational in origin. ALTHOUGH the thermodynamic properties of solid solutions of carbon in cobalt and in nickel have been investigated previously, the results of these investigations show a marked lack of agreement amongst themselves. In this investigation simple vapor transport experiments have been undertaken in order to measure the temperature variation of the saturation solubility of carbon in nickel and cobalt with the object of removing to some degree the uncertainties in the thermodynamics of these systems. In the case of the C-Co system, early measurements of the saturation solubility of graphite in Co show results at the same temperature differing by almost an order of magnitude.1-5 Recently Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert6 measured the equilibrium between CH4-H2 mixtures and C-Co solid solutions at five temperatures ranging from 850° to 1050°C. Their values of the activity of carbon in the solid solution, deduced from a knowledge of the chemical potential of carbon atoms in the gas, varies linearly with composition at each temperature and the authors concluded that the solutions were Henryan. The saturation solubilities deduced from Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert's measurements are in good agreement with the solubility determined at 1000°C by Rao and Nicholson7 and the value at 1000°C deduced from the measurements of smith8 on the equilibrium between CO/CO2 mixtures and C-Co solutions. The object of this investigation was to check the results of Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert and also to extend the range of solubility data to higher temperatures. In the case of the C-Ni system, there is fairly good agreement between the values given by schaefer9 for the saturation solubility of carbon C, in nickel, the value given at 1000°C by Rao and Nicholson,7 and that deduced from Smith's8 measurements of the equilibrium between C-Ni solutions and CO/CO2 mixtures at 1000°C. The values of C, deduced from Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert's6 measurements of the carbon activity in nickel are also in fairly good agreement. However, there is a large discrepancy between the above set of measurements and those of Lander, Kern, and Beach," who measured the carbon solubility of nickel in equilibrium with graphite by depositing an excess of graphite on the surface of Ni-foils from a gaseous mixture and subsequently diffusing in the carbon. These results are considerably higher than those mentioned above. The determinations6 of carbon activity a, in nickel from the CH4-H2 equilibrium showed that at all the temperatures investigated, the ac-values varied linearly with concentration up to about a, = 0.6 and then began to increase with concentration much more rapidly. On the basis of auxiliary experiments in which C-Ni solutions were equilibrated with graphite, Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert concluded that their CH4-H2 solid equilibrations at high values of a, were spurious and a, behaved linearly with composition up to the saturation limit (a, = 1). The short linear extrapolations of Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert's a, data yield values of C, in good agreement with those of Lander, Kern, and Beach." The solubility data for nickel discussed here is presented in Fig. 1 in the form of plots of ln[Cc/(l - 2cc)] vs 1/T. The discrepancies mentioned are clearly seen. When oil is displaced from a horizontal formation by another fluid of lower density, the latter tends to override the former in the shape of a tongue owing to gravity segregation. This gravity tongue has an adverse influence on the oil recovery. If the fluids are miscible, diffusion (mixing) takes place at the interfacial boundary of the gravity tongue. This mixing should have a favorable effect on oil recovery. The report describes a laboratory study of the magnitude of the mixing zone under various conditions, so as to assess the effect of diffusion on oil recovery both in laboratory experiments and under actual field conditions. The technique used enables visual observation and measurement of the size of the mixing zone in transparent glass-powder packs. The results show that in experiments in small models and cores the width of the mixing zone may well be of the same order of magnitude as the height of the model. In such cases oil recovery is favorably affected by mixing. It can further be concluded that, under conditions prevailing in the field, mixing of the injected fluid with reservoir oil is equal to that caused by molecular diffusion alone, eddy-mixing not taking place to any appreciable extent. A simple calculation, then, shows that molecular diffusion is too small for a beneficial effect to be expected from the injection of miscible fluids in horizontal or nearly horizontal reservoirs unless pay zones are thin. INTRODUCTION This paper gives results of experiments made on the mixing which occurs when a miscible displacement is carried out in a horizontal reservoir. This mixing takes place at the interfacial boundary of the gravity tongue formed when the lighter injected fluid overrides the oil present in the reservoir. The object of the experiments was to simulate the field case where, for example, propane with a viscosity of 0.075 cp under reservoir conditions displaces an oil of viscosity 0.6 cp. In the experiments the lighter fluid had a viscosity of about 1 cp and the heavier one a viscosity of about 8 cp, so as to obtain the same viscosity ratio. In order to enable the results to be compared with those published in the literature, a set of experiments with viscosity ratio equal to one was also performed. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The technique developed for the purpose enables the width of the mixing zone to be studied as a function of time and place. A glass-powder pack is saturated with a water-glycerine mixture of suitable viscosity, which represents the reservoir fluid. The pack is then rendered transparent by dissolving sufficient ammonium thiocyanate in the mixture to obtain a solution with a refractive index matching that of the glass powder. Alkaline water to which phenol-phthalein has been added is used as the lighter and less-viscous displacing fluid. In those places where mixing or diffusion of the two liquids occurs, the slightly acidic ammonium-thiocyanate solution neutralizes the alkali in the water, and the glass pack shows up white against the red-colored invading water. If a black cloth is hung over the back of the apparatus, the transparent part of the glass pack appears black. In this way the position of the two phases and the transition zone between them is clearly visible, as shown in Fig. 1 (where the red-colored invading water is the grey-shaded zone lying uppermost). In all experiments the amount of alkali in the water was chosen such that the upper contour corresponded to a concentration of 5 per cent of the dense liquid. The lower contour is determined by the size of the glass grains and the thickness of the pack and, consequently, varies from experiment to experiment. Corresponding concentrations of the dense liquid range from about 97 per cent for packs of small grain size (permeability = 1 darcy) to about 95 per cent for those with large grains

The pumping operations at the Chief mine have been unique in the respect that for many years the entire flow of water into the mine has been disposed of by pumping into natural underground "caverns" or "sinks." Volumes up to 4000 gpm have been pumped into these caverns with no apparent tendency for the caverns to fill with water, and it has never been proven that any of the water returns to the mine workings. Major pumping operations have been carried on during two periods, the first from 1918 to 1927, and the second from 1942 to the present time. Early Pumping Operations CHIEF MINE The Chief Consolidated Mining Co. was organized in 1909, and for the following nine years ore was developed and mined from the 600 level down to the 1800 level, all above the permanent water table, the 1820 level. The ore occurs as extremely-irregular pipes of replacement ore in limestone, and to date a total of approximately 2 1/2 million tons of ore has been produced. The ore was highly oxidized down to the permanent water level, and some highly-oxidized ore runs occur beneath the permanent water table. In 1916, with extensive mining being done on the 1800 level, 20 ft above the water table, there were indications that a zone of secondary enrichment might exist below the water, and in order to follow the ore runs to greater depth, it was realized that arrangements would have to be Made to pump water to the surface. The original pumping installation was designed to pump 350 gpm in five stages against a 1900-ft head to the surface. By January 1919, the water had been lowered to the 1900 level and an excellent grade of silver-lead ore was being produced from the zone of secondary enrichment. At this point. the flow of water equalled the capacity of the pumps, and pumps of an additional 1000 gpln were installed to supplement the original system. By January 1920, the water had been lowered approximately 100 ft, and the total flow of water was 1000 gpm. The water was being pumped from many different places in the mine where ore was being followed downward, with 27 different pumps operating below the 1800 level, mainly Cameron air-driven sinker pumps. These first sinking pumps were cumbersome and inefficient, and each of the larger pumps weighed approximately three tons and required tremeridous volumes of compressed air. During this period, an exploration drift being extended north and west from the Chief shaft on the 1600 level encountered a large natural cavern some 2000 ft from the shaft. This cavern in places measured 60 ft in diameter. Sometime later the disposing of water into this cavern was suggested, and as an experiment to determine the results of such an operation, an attempt was Made to fill the cavern by pumping in a small volume of water, but the water disappeared as fast as it was discharged into the cavern. It was decided then to try the cavern as a drainage outlet for the entire volume of water being pumped to the surface, and the water apparently did not return to the mine workings. Subsequently water up to 3000 gpm was pumped into this cavern. An attempt was made to determine whether any water was being returned from the cavern to the lower workings, and 100 lb of sodium fluorescein salt was added to the water discharged into the cavern, but no trace of it was found in the drainage water in the mine. Results of another such test will be described later.

WHEN apparent resistivity data are taken with the symmetrical Wenner 4-electrode spread, a fixed center position is used and readings are taken for values of electrode separation. Basic data consist of apparent resistivity plotted against separation of adjacent electrodes . The interpreter attempts to infer geologic structure, such as the depth to discontinuities and the nature of subsurface earth materials. An earlier paper' described methods for interpreting resistivity data. All of these involve a severe assumption, namely that the earth in the region of interest consists of horizontal layers, electrically homogeneous and isotropic. The actual earth never satisfies this assumption exactly and may deviate from it so much that none of the above methods can be applied. Attempts in three directions have been made to modify the assumption so that it approaches known geologic complexity more closely. First, curves have been calculated for dipping discontinuities. Stern' and Aldredge hose a few widely separated dip angles. Trudu confined his attention to small dips. Berel'kovskiy and Zubanov computed gradient curves for widely separated dip angles. Unz as given the most complete solution, with a brief attempt to treat the three-layer case. Second, anisotropy can be taken into account. It seems geologically probable that layered materials have different vertical and horizontal conductivities. Cagniard, Maillet, and Pirson et up methods for finding an equivalent hypothetical isotropic medium. Standard interpretation methods can be applied to this, and the actual medium can then be deduced. Belluigi'" discounts the practical importance of anisotropy; Geneslay and Rouget do not agree with his conclusion. Third, the effect of variable resistivity in a layer can be considered. Keck and Colby" examine the mathematics of an exponential increase in a surface layer. Several authors, for example, Stevenson,'' consider a continuous variation of resistivity with depth. The present paper deals with a linear variation of resistivity in a surface layer. Geologically, surface variations should be expected. Unconsolidated materials such as glacial drift show marked irregularities over short distances. The effects of weathering change with depth. The moisture content of material above the water table may vary from a dry sand to a saturated clay, and both of these will be changed by rainfall. Figs. 1 to 6 present apparent resistivity curves to show the effect of a variable surface layer. In all cases resistivity varies linearly with depth down to a depth of one unit. Material beneath this depth has constant resistivity. Electrode separation is plotted in depth units. Insets on each figure show the corresponding cross-sections, plotting true resistivity against depth. To illustrate, consider curve A of Fig. 1. The true resistivity of material at the surface of the earth is taken as 0.4 units. Resistivity increases with depth, reaching a value of 1.0 at 0.5 depth units and 1.6 at 1.0 depth units. Below a depth of 1.0, all the material has very low resistivity (zero, for purposes of calculation). Curve A in the main part of Fig. 1 shows how apparent resistivity varies for this case as the electrode spacing is increased. To illustrate further, curve E of Fig. 4 corresponds to true resistivity of 1.2 units at the surface, 1.0 at a depth of 0.5 units, 0.8 at a depth of 1.0, and 1.5 for all depths greater than 1.0. Apparent resistivity curves have been plotted logarithmically so that the shape of the curves becomes independent of the units, giving the curves wide validity. A certain drift-covered area, for example, shows a gradual decrease of resistivity from 230 ohm-meters at the surface to 150 ohm-meters at the bedrock surface, 275 ft down; bedrock resistivity is 800 ohm-meters. Curve E of Fig. 5 indicates that true resistivity decreases from 1.2 units at the surface to 0.8 at a depth of 1.0, then increases abruptly to a constant value of 4.0 units. The internal surfaces of rocks which are in contact with interstitial fluids are known to influence in some degree the recovery of hydrocarbons from pay zones. Despite the admitted importance of the influence of solid surfaces on hydrocarbon recovery, little information is available concerning the extent of surface of reservoir rocks. In this paper a description is given of the apparatus and procedure employed in the determination of the surface areas of sedimentary rocks, and values are reported for a variety of sandstone and limestone cores. In addition, consideration is given to the Kozeny equation, which relates surface area to porosity and permeability. A colliparison is made between the surface areas as calculated from this equation and the geometrical areas of a series of packs of spherical glass beads. Also, for a group of sandstone cores. Kozeny areas are compared with surface areas as determined by the gas adsorption method employed in this investigation. INTRODUCTION It has long been recognized that many processes which are of importance to hydrocarbon production are controlled in some degree by the extent of the surface of the reservoir rock through which the hydrocarbons move. For example, the recovery efficiency that is obtained in a given reservoir is certainly determined in part by the action of interfacial forces between the reservoir fluids and rock, and this action is influenced in turn by the extent of solid surface. Despite the admitted importance of surface effects to problems of petroleum recovery, little information is available concerning the extent of surface of reservoir rocks." It is the purpose of this paper to describe an apparatus which has been employed for the measurement of the surface areas of rock samples and to present the values which have been obtained for a variety of sandstone and limestone cores. In addition, the relationship of surface area to permeability and porosity, as given by the Kozeny equation, will be discussed. METHOD OF MEASURING SURFACE AREA The method of determining surface areas as employed in this work has previously found wide use in studies of porous solids such as catalysts. The method involves the measurement of the amount of physical adsorption of an inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon, on the bare surface of the solid at reduced pressure and constant temperature near the normal liquefaction temperature of the gas. With the aid of the theory of isothermal adsorption as developed by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller,' it is possible to ascertain the amount of gas (and hence the number of molecules) which is required to cover the solid surface with a single layer of molecules. From a knowledge of the covering area per molecule the total surface ares of the solid can be computed. Since the Brunauer. Emmett, Teller (BET) theory has been adequately discussed elsewhere: it will suffice here merely to present their final equation as ordinarily employed for surface-area calculations. This equation relates the volume of gas, V, which is adsorbed at pressure, P, to the liquefaction pressure, Po, of the gas, and to the volume of gas, V.,, that is required to form a monomolecular layer: In this equation C is a quantity which is related to the heats of adsorption and liquefaction of the gas; for a particular solid-gas system at Constant temperature, C is considered to have a constant value. U.S. Steel Corp.'s Winifrede mine is operated by Lynch District in the mountainous region of eastern Kentucky. This region is characterized by narrow finger ridges and precipitous slopes, which present both an opportunity and challenge in the design and selection of coal-handling facilities for the movement of coal from the section belts to the railrod cars. Lynch District selected diesel-powered locomo¬tives and 100-ton articulated cars capable of negotiating sharp curves. The drop¬bottom mine cars are equipped with longitudinally hinged doors that are auto¬matically opened and closed. Lynch District selected a large-diameter steel-lined borehole for lowering the coal approximately 1000 ft from the seam level to the valley floor railroad load-out point. Taking advantage of gravity, the presized coal is "lowered" vertically approximately 720 ft to existing entries of a previously abandoned mine. The coal is then conveyed horizontally into storage. The coal¬handling facility from the mine-car dump to the railroad load-out point is fully automatic through use of tone control. TV cameras are installed along the facility to continuously monitor the strategic points. The diesel locomotives are either directly operated or remotely radio-controlled, depending on the functions Per¬formed. The narrow finger ridges precluded use of under¬ground haulage and, thereby, presented the opportunity to use high-capacity equipment on the outside bench. The precipitous mountain slopes, steepest at the Wini¬frede seam horizon, presented a challenge to select a solution for lowering the coal approximately 1000 ft from the seam level to the valley floor railroad load-out point. It was evident from the start of planning that these two factors predominated; namely, rail haulage and coal lowering, and solutions to these would determine the final design of the Winifrede mine coal-handling facilities. The Winifrede mine derives its name from the Wini¬frede Seam which comprises the total reserve recov¬erable from this facility. The seam is 5 ft high with a good siltstone bottom and competent shale or sandstone roof. The seam is at an elevation of 2700 ft where the mountain ridges are long and narrow. This configuration of the reserve was ideal for conveyor belt installation to transport the coal from the working face to the outside bench. The preclusion of underground rail haul¬age permitted an opportunity to review the type of locomotive power and to select high-capacity equipment without the limitations associated with underground systems. Since the basic electrical design of the mine was al¬ternating current, with rectification to direct current for shuttle cars required only in the face areas, there was no point in bearing the burden of additional cost of dc trolley installation. And, since the haulage would re¬quire only a few tunnels to negotiate sharp points and to reach the back side of the reserves, diesel power was selected for the haulage locomotives. To provide stability on the almost continuously curv¬ing track and to provide the maximum width of haul¬age equipment, both locomotives and mine cars, stan¬dard railroad gage was chosen to offer the largest choice of equipment. The decision was made to select a standard 45-ton railroad diesel locomotive but to lower the cab height to reduce tunnel excavation requirements. The mine car was the next challenge. Past experience in Lynch operations indicated that drop-bottom cars would be a successful application with the free-flowing coal. The search was for a drop-bottom car within the dimensions of the locomotive to discharge the coal in the shortest time. Numerous types were considered and visits made to various sites to observe cars in operation.

Kesults of laboratory investigations of the effects of drilling muds on oil well cements are presented which show that relatively large quantities of untreated muds do not seriously interfere with the setting of cement slurries, but that relalively small quantities of treated muds seriously retard the setting of cement slurries. Laboratory results also indicate that the harmful effects of contamination with treated muds can he counteracted by the addition of activated charcoal to cements. Also described is the successful use of cement containing activated charcoal for the placement of plugs in oPel hole after previous attempts with ordinary cement had been unsuccessful. INTRODUCTION The contamination of cement slurry by dilution with drilling mud has long been considered a cause of failure in oil well cementing. The cement slurry must displace the drilling mud from the annulus between the casing and the walls of the borehole. and it is probable that some mixing of the slurry and the mud occurs even under the most nearly ideal displacement conditions. Hole enlargement, failure to center the casing in the hole, and formation of gel structure in the drilling mud increase the probability of contamination. In some cementing operations, such as the placement of a cement plug in open hole, considerable mixing of the mud and slurry is likely. Many cement failures which can be attributed logically to no cause other than contamination of the cement slurry by the mud attest the need of a better understanding of this problem. Considerable attention was given to the problem of mud contamination of cements about 20 years ago.The effects of field mud upon cement slurries prepared with different amounts of mix water were investigated thoroughly, and the data obtained were invaluable in determining the causes of the high percentage of failure in oil-well cementing at that time and in bringing about improved cementing results. Since then, many aspects of the problem have changed, due primarily to advancements in cement and drilling mud technology. Today, several types of portland cement are used in well cementing and numerous chemical additives are used in drilling muds. An excellent report on the effects of drilling mud additives on oil-well cements was issued during 1951 by the American Petroleum Institute. Data in the report revealed that many mud additives, notably organic materials in relatively small amounts, produce a marked effect on the properties of cements. Prior to this time, little information has been available on the effects of chemicals commonly used in the treatment of drilling muds upon the properties of cements. Another aspect of the problem of mud contamination of cements, which has received no attention heretofore, is the possibility of producing a cement having properties unaffected by a reasonable amount of mud contamination. In view of the need for additional information on the contamination of present-day cements by currently-used drilling Muds, the investigation described herein was initiated Several years ago with a two-fold purpose: first, to determine the capacity of cement slurries to tolerate contamination by both untreated and treated muds without loss of ability to set and develop strength within a reasonable time; and, second, to investigate the possibility of enhancing the ability of cement slurries to withstand mud contamination by incorporating additives in the cement. The data for this study were obtained by mixing drilling mud with cement slurry and testing the resulting slurry-mud mixture for rate of set and development of strength. Also, several materials were tested for their possible improvement of the property of cement slurry to withstand mud contamination; these materials were tested in both contaminated and uncontaminated cement slurries.

At the Kaiser Cement and Gypsum plant near San Jose, Calif., one rod-ball mill has taken over the entire raw grinding function for the largest single cement operation in the West. Installed as part of a major overhaul performed on the plant by Kaiser Engineers, the new mill does the work of seven previous mills in feeding the plant's six kilns and keeping pace with its annual capacity of 8.5 million bbl of cement. Installation of the mill, which is the largest in the world, was started in December of 1966 and completed in April of 1967. The over-all modernization program surrounding the new mill has included the modification of existing crushing facilities; the building of new raw materials handling and blending facilities, new raw milling facilities, and new slurry handling facilities; and the installation of a digital-analog control system.

During the course of the war the supply of tin in this country has steadily decreased and a continued effort has been made since the beginning of the emergency to use alloys that are either tin free or contain appreciably lower quantities of it. Even with the use of emergency materials, the tin supply has become particularly acute, and it is estimated that after recovery of the far eastern mines probably one to two years will be required before our normal annual supply is attained. One of the major tin-consuming fields is the bronze industry. Recommendations were made several years ago by the War Production Board toward the use of bronzes of lower tin content and manganese bronze and yellow brass for the customarily used tin-bronze alloys. The substitution of 88-5-5-2 copper-nickel-tin-zinc for composition G received considerable attention before the war, and consequently this alloy and modifications of it have been adopted for some current structural and pressure castings requiring high mechanical properties. Another of the commonly used bronzes is the 10 per cent tin 10 per cent lead copper alloy for heavy-duty bearings. It has been known for some time that about 2.5 per cent nickel could be substituted for an equal amount of tin with retention of equivalent casting and tensile properties; however, it was desirable that a still greater conservation of tin be made. Consequently the present paper deals with the development of an alloy of low tin content that could be used for bearings. Selection or Composition While the final criterion of the suitability of an alloy for a bearing must of course be determined by practical applications where all the ramifications of service conditions are encountered, certain short cuts in the initial selection of compositions are necessary to avoid an extensive and time-consuming investigation. The present program has been to match certain metallurgical properties of the 80-10-10 bronze that have been shown by previous investigations to be related to good bearing qualities. Such properties as microstruc-ture, hardness, compressive yield strength, ductility, and castability have been considered, and certain simple wear tests have been made. Of the readily assessed characteristics desired in a good bearing alloy, one can be certain that a uniform distribution of lead is required in a leaded bronze. It has generally been found that segregation of lead is one of the chief difficulties with this type of material. Tin has a powerful effect on lead distribution, and with 10 per cent present produces a random distribution of chunky particles, such as are shown in Fig' 1.
