The most noticeable change in lead smelting over the past few years has been the increase in the smelting rate of lead blast furnaces. For several years a great deal of attention has been paid to the preparation of the blast-furnace sinter charge but more recently the plan has been to incorporate- almost the entire makeup of the blast-furnace charge, excepting coke and scrap iron, at the sintering machines. Formerly, sintering machines were used primarily for removing, sulphur and for agglomerating finely divided material both sulphide and oxide in character. Limestone flux usually was so proportioned that a relatively large amount was added to the furnace charge direct. This procedure was also followed with oxidized ores, which were purposely crushed coarse' so that they would be adaptable for direct smelting on the furnace charge. In later years it has been the tendency in western smelters to include practically all of the limestone and oxidized ores in the sinter charge. This has been somewhat more costly because fine crushing is required for sintering purposes and because these oxidized materials were given additional processing through the sinter plant. The addition of such oxidized materials to the usual charge to be sintered, brought about, in certain instances, a deficiency in heat ordinarily supplied by the sulphide constituents of the charge. This heat deficiency has been remedied by the addition of carbonaceous fuel, in the form of finely crushed coke breeze, or in a few instances by the addition of zinc retort-plant residues. The enhanced gold price has stimulated the mining of crude siliceous ores throughout the Western States and in the smelting of such ores more limestone is required for fluxing. Shipments of gold-bearing pyritic concentrates to Western smelters have increased, and the combination of increased silica, limestone and pyrite has increased the percentage of slag, which, in itself, is an aid in .securing smoother and more rapid smelting in the blast furnace. By the addition of these substances, the percentage of zinc in the slag has been appreciably lowered. at many plants, with resultant benefit to smelting speed at the blast furnace. This increase in slag formation with lowered zinc content has caused also perceptible lessening of the amount of lead on the charge and this has benefited the blast-furnace smelting. Although a satisfactory sinter is fundamental in increased rate of bullion production per furnace, there has been a trend over the list four or five years to decrease the percentage of coke and increase the percentage of scrap iron and limestone on the blast-furnace charge. As a result of these changes in practice certain blast furnaces, without any mechanical change, have doubled or tripled their tonnages. For furnaces whore the volume of air is recorded, records show decidedly larger air volumes with a comparatively small increase in air, pressure, or, none at all.

Overgrinding, Or the breaking of ore particles into sizes smaller than required for liberation, is a first-magnitude problem in grinding for concentration processes. The conventional ball mill-classifier circuit used in commercial grinding produces mineral particles that are all ground to pass an upper size limit, while the proportion of very fine sizes, or slimes, is uncon rolled. Calculations based on measurements made in commercial plants which were grinding ore for flotation concentration indicate that about go pct of the energy used in grinding is consumed in useless overgrinding.1 In addition to accounting for the consumption of a large amount of energy, over-grinding is detrimental to the flotation process. Overground slime coats larger partitles and inhibits selective action by the flotation reagents on particles which by themselves could be separated very well. A further difficulty is that extremely finely ground minerals do not respond satisfactorily to flotation-collecting reagents, and both selection and recovery decrease markedly with particles finer than 5 to 10 microns.2 conventional classifier-ball mill circuits inherently tend to overgrind the valuable minerals more than the gangue minerals because most valuable minerals are of higher density and are softer and more friable than the gangue minerals. The rem- edy to this situation would seem to be a separating mechanism which would separate free valuable mineral particles regardless of size and density considerations and a mechanism which would operate in the grinding mill so that valuable mineral grains would be removed from the grinding machine as soon as they are freed. A consideration of these ideas led the authors to the conception of a simultaneous grinding and flotation mechanism. So far as the authors are aware, such a machine has never been tried, even on a laboratory scale. Development oF Apparatus and Experimental Method Apparatus development went through several stages before a really workable machine was devised. Work was started with a large cast-iron mortar 7½ in. in diameter and 8 in- deep. A cast-iron disk Was mounted on the end of a vertical shaft SO that it fitted loosely into the bottom of the mortar. On top of the disk four radial cleats ¼ in. high were bolted to agitate the ball charge as the disk, or impeller, rotated. The vertical shaft was driven at 100 rpm by a mechanism improvised from an old coffee-mill type of grinder. A hole was drilled into the bottom of the mortar through which compressed air was introduced for frothing. In operation, more charges of Ore which had been crushed to pass an 8-mesh screen were placed in the bowl along with water and suitable reagents. JULY was a month of great turmoil, both economic and political, in many parts of the world. Instead of conditions improving, they seem to have been getting worse. In Ireland, civil war is still in progress. Germany was in the throes of a political upheaval. The meaning of the assassination of Rathenau became clear. It evinced the development of a class struggle between the bourgeois and socialistic parties which may rock the country to its foundation and will increase the difficulties of arranging things with the French and solving the reparations problem. In Poland, a similar contest is developing. Austria is already so completely contaminated by the socialist element that it is unable to get outside assistance and is thus falling into a state of despair but little short of what prevails in Russia. The conference at the Hague came to an abortive end for the reason that it was impossible to discuss affairs with the Russians in any reasonable way. The Germans declared their inability to meet the reparation payment that fell clue on July 15 and the Commissioners for the Allies granted them an abate-ment of a portion thereof and are listening attentively to the supplication of the Germans for a moratorium of one or two years. In the United States, July was a month of widespread labor troubles, accompanied by a great deal of disorder and violence, which led to detachments of the National Guard being called out in several states. The railway shopmen, about 400,000 in number, struck on July 1. The road maintenance men decided not to strike, but many thousands of them quit work without the sanc-tion of their union. There were more strikes in the textile industry in New England and in similar industries all over the country. Early in July, it was estimated that about 1,250,000 men were out on strike. The coal strike continued. Early in the month the President summoned operators and miners to Washing-ton and submitted a plan for the compromising of disputes. After a week's consideration the miners re-fused flatly to agree to anything. The majority of the operators consented to accept the proposed arbitration, but a minority refused. Following this abortive at-tempt the President dismissed the conference with the injunction "to return to your mine properties and resume operation." Production has not increased.

Crude oil stocks were some 10,000,000 bbl higher on June I, 1947, than at any time during 1946 but the extremely heavy refinery runs the last half of 1947 cut crude inventories to approximately the 1946 closing level of 225,000,000 bbl. Many refiners were seriously short of crude oil during the year. This shortage was reflected in numerous advances in the posted price of crude, justified in part as an incentive for more production but more generally due to competitive bidding. Some purchasers of crude, endeavoring to keep their plants running, resorted to the payment, either directly or indirectly, of premiums above the posted price. Another common practice employed by some suppliers of crude oil was to demand refined products in exchange or trade for their raw material. The refined products picture has darkened in spite of record throughputs. Stocks of gasoline and light and heavy fuel oils were uncomfortably low at the beginning of the year and were in general still lower at the close. The rationing of some products, principally gasoline, to dealers and stations? initiated during the year, gained momentum as stocks continued to diminish. The emphasis placed by the manufacturers of oil-burning equipment on the convenience and economy of heating with oil, together with the tight situation in coal, has developed a tremendous demand for burning oils. Consumption of liquefied petroleum gas for domestic and household fuel had more than doubled in 1946 over 1943, and the demand seems to be limited only by the ability of the equipment builders to furnish necessary storage. transportation, and burning equipment. The supply situation is likely to become more acute in 1948. Demand for petroleum products is being pushed to new heights not only by the unprecedented domestic market but by a sudden and drastic upswing in estimates of military and governmental requirements. Additionally, oil exports are running far below the volume requested, amounting to less than forty percent in a recent quarter, and export licenses are reportedly being approved on the basis of urgent need *only. AX recent White House release sees little likelihood that estimated requirements of the sixteen nations participating in the proposed Marshall Plan can be met in full over its projected life—1948 to 1951. Present demand dictates maintenance of refinery operations at the highest possible level and the Bureau of Mines has forecast daily average crude runs in 1948 of 5,265,000 bbl. The Economics Advisory Committee of the Interstate Oil Compact Commission recently estimated the 1948 demand for petroleum products at nearly 6 pct above 1947. They further estimate daily average crude runs of 5,375,000 bbl in 1948, some 2 pct higher than forecast by the Bureau of Mines. Projected demand exceeds supply to the extent that Capitol Hill is reportedly investigating ways of enabling oil companies to act in concert without danger of antitrust prosecution, such as elimination of crosshauls, pooling of products, and lowering of octane.

Rotary kilns are adaptable to many fuels, but this paper deals principally with the use of powdered coal. The observations and conclusions presented are based on rotary kilns used in the manufacture of basic refractories for steel furnaces. Solid fuels are pulverized for two principal reasons: (I) ease of control, and (2) rapidity of combustion. By the use of pulverized coal, the operator can increase or decrease the fuel supply by small increments and with very little time lag between the change of control and the resultant change in the flame. This is extremely important in this type of furnace, as the temperature range for maturing the clinker is very narrow. By fine grinding, it is possible to increase the rate of burning of the coal, thereby liberating great quantities of heat within a small space in a short time. Under given conditions, temperature is a measure of the heat liberated per unit of time. To attain the temperatures of 2950° to 3150ºF., which are encountered in the manufacture of various steel-furnace refractories, it is estimated that it is necessary to liberate 125,000 to 175,000 B.t.u. per cubic foot of the burning zone per hour. The manufacture of dolomitic refractories is a ceramic process and, as is true in most such processes, the material must be subjected to a certain critical temperature for a certain length of time in order to complete the reaction. If the time of reaction is reduced, the temperature must be increased; in other words, if the rate at which the material flows through the hot zone of the kiln is increased, the temperature of the hot zone must be increased to compensate for this shorter exposure to the flame. Firing with Pulverized Coal Fig. I is a line drawing of a rotary kiln with the attendant equipment indicated in their relative positions. The kiln proper consists of a sloping, refractory-lined steel tube rotating slowly about its longitudinal axis (0.75 r.p.m.), and is countercurrent in operation in that the raw feed is introduced at the stack end and gradually approaches the zone of highest temperature at the lower end, where the fuel is introduced. Before 1930, the usual method of firing a rotary kiln was to store the coal in the pulverized form and then feed from this storage to the kiln as needed. This proved unsatisfactory and dangerous because of dust explosions and the inability to obtain an even feed to the kiln caused by arching of the coal in storage and flooding of the coal feeders. In later years the practice has been to store the raw coal and grind it as it is needed. Such a layout is indicated in Fig. I. The coal is stored in bins, charged from the top and drawn from the bottom into recording scales and then into some type of unit pulverizer. There are a number of good pulverizers .on the market, each incorporating features that the manufacturer considers outstanding.

Placer dredging as we know it today, especially gold dredging, is an industry about 40 years old, dating from the beginning of this century, when a few mining men in California saw the possibilities in adapting earlier dredging methods to California placer fields in and immediately adjacent to streams. At first it was thought that dredges must be operated in existing stream beds, but experience soon pointed the way to dredging alluvial deposits of old stream beds, operating on landlocked dredging ponds. Within the first five or six years of modern dredging, experience was gained so rapidly that dredges to dig 60 ft. below water level were *designed and built. This depth was believed by many operators to be the maximum at which successful dredging could be carried on. Alluvial deposits of gold, suitable for dredging, were readily handled by equipment available and developed early in the industry's history. Much of the gravel was easily dug and if deposits were cemented, contained large boulders, or for some other reason could not be handled by a dredge, the ground was abandoned in favor of other deposits that could be handled easily. Many failures, adversely affecting the dredging industry, resulted from attempts at that time to extend the scope of placer dredging with equipment not suited to the formation being dredged. Dredging ground suited to early equipment was exhausted eventually, but many supposedly undredgeable alluvial fields containing gold in commercial quantities were found and became known to dredgemen. Improved equipment was needed to work deposits known to exist at great depths or associated with unusual obstructions. Operating companies looked to dredge manufacturers and metallurgists, particularly manganese-steel foundries, for improved designs and materials. Experience developed in California has spread throughout the world, and dredges of improved types have been adapted to the mining of platinum and tin as well as gold. Space will not permit a description of all the improvements in dredging since the early days, but a few of the recent developments are worthy of note, because they make possible the dredging of placer deposits of great depth, those having hard, irregular bedrock or containing large boulders in great quantities, and compacted or cemented gravel deposits. Deep Dredging At Hammonton, calif., yuba consolidated Gold Fields has, within= the past two years, built its dredge No. 20. The company has operated continuously in that field since 1904, digging successively at maximum depths of 60 ft., 80 ft., 112 ft., and now 124 ft. below water level. The first dredges were equipped with buckets of 6 and 7½-cu. ft. capacity; six dredges operating in the field today have 18-cu. ft. buckets, digging now 65 to 124 ft. below water level. Mavkers ill a diffusion couple in the iron-chromium system move towards the high chromium side indicating Dcr > DFe at the marker composition. By a combituztion of measurements of D& and D a: a function of composition, this is also shown independently. DFe is calculated as a function of composition. and shown to be in reasonable agreement with measured values by other workers. MEASUREMENTS of marker movements in diffusion couples have been used from time to time to demonstrate that a vacancy or interstitial mechanism may be operative. Since there is a possibility that ring diffusion1 may be operative in chromium, the present experiments are of interest in showing some non-ring mechanism in iron-chromium alloys around the equiatomic composition. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The movement of markers originally at the interface between 1-in. sq sections of pure Cr (6 mm thick) and outer slabs of 30 Cr-70 Fe alloy was followed as a function of time at temperatures from 1150" to 1425"C, in a Kanthal-wound furnace. Temperature control was +5°C over extended periods. The analyses of these alloys are given in Table I. Selection of suitable markers presented a considerable experimental problem; the eventual solution was to draw quartz rod down to 0.01 cm and seat this in V-grooves 0.01 cm deep on each side of the chromium prior to welding. A preliminary experiment in which the groove was machined in the alloy gave identical results. Welding was accomplished by passing a heavy current through specimens under moderate pressure in a helium atmosphere. This method produced good welds with a planar interface as shown by subsequent metallo-graphic investigation. Any markers which did not adequately fill their groove and showed subsequent contamination from the atmosphere during heat treatment were not considered reliable. The composite sample was ground and metal-lographically polished on the four sides perpendicular to the interface. Fiducial marks (deep milled slots) were made outside the diffusion zone to check on total volume change. All necessary measurements were made on a metallograph reading to +0.0005 cm. The samples were wrapped in tantalum foil and given diffusion anneals for times to 200 hr in carefully purified dry hydrogen in a sealed McDanel porcelain tube. Chromium-zirconium chips were introduced near the specimen as an additional getter. The specimens were cooled relatively slowly after the diffusion anneal to preserve the McDanel tube but no significant error in effective time at temperature was thereby introduced. At least 1 mm was ground off the surface before measurements were taken. It was observed that the grain size following short diffusion anneals was several mm and was appreciably larger in the 30 Cr alloy than in the pure Cr. No significant grain boundary penetration was present as indicated by the etch limit. The results are presented in the next section. The World War I1 spread to Russia on June 22, 1941, when the German Armies began their invasion. The Soviet industries, which were already engaged in a tremendous armament program, further accelerated the flow of munitions, and equipment and supplies for all purposes not directly military were either entirely eliminated or reduced to an absolute minimum. With the occupation by German armies of the Dniepr and Kharkov industrial regions, this trend was necessarily further accentuated. The oil industry of Russia, in consequence, was left to rely more and more upon itself, its own very limited manufacturing facilities, extensive repair shops and probably much used equipment out of order stacked in the warehouses. All evidence available to date points to the fact that the new situation not only did not affect the production either quantitatively or qualitatively, but, on the contrary, caused a larger flow of much needed fuels to the country's war machine, primarily by renaissance of both management and labor. The oil industry of the Soviet Union, left to depend entirely upon itself for equip ment and supplies, and even for new workers and technicians to replace those called into the services, did and is still doing a good and effective job. Since it could not hope for new equipment and parts and could not blame any other industry for the delays in delivery, it dragged out old machines from storage and repaired them in its own machine shops. Often such stored and used equipment was but slightly defective, waiting for some small part from factories in Central Russia, plants that now were either in German hands or entirely converted to the manufacture of munitions. More particularly, instead of the pipe that could not be taken to the Caucasus from Central Russia, casing reclaimed from abandoned or submarginal wells was used, or pipe from the abandoned or but slightly used pipe lines; and this practice is being continued even now on a large scale, to create an ample reserve for the duration of the conflict. Indirectly such a development was even an improvement on pre-war days, when many wells about to be completed had to wait for weeks, even months, for the arrival of new pipe, all blame then being placed outside of the industry on the factories in Central Russia. For the purpose of reclaiming equipment and pipe still usable, special crews were organized. The war also caused much quicker adaptation of certain American practices and introduction of many emergency measures, such as: removal of derricks upon completion of wells and the use of drilling equipment mounted on skids for rapid transfer from location to location—both of these practices, while standard in the U.S.A., being new in Russia; installation of simplified surface pumping units; substitution of wooden bearings in the surface pump equipment; completion of wells in the Ural-Volga district, where formations are hard and tight throughout the sedimentary column, without either casing or

In the preparation of illustrations to accompany reports of investigations concerning particle shapes of various natural and manufactured materials proposed for use as he aggretates in concrete structures, it was found that stereoscopic views of such materials presented the information much more effectively than the usual two-dimensional photographs. With the whole-hearted cooperation of the Photographic Section, a technique was developed in the petro-graphic laboratory of the Concrete Research Division, U.S. Corps of Engineers, at Clinton, Miss., for simple and rapid preparation of paired stereoscopic photographs and micrographs. The method requires only equipment which is usually part of the general stock of any laboratory, and it is adaptable for all purposes in which three-dimensional views would be found superior to ordinary photographs. Stereoscopic Photographs Where the subject or subjects to be photographed are small but not of microscopic size, an ordinary camera having a ground-glass focusing screen is set up vertically over the field. The material to be photographed is placed on a card, the surface of which is suitable as a background. The card is mounted so that it can be tilted about 5' above and below the horizontal plane, on an axis that coincides with the north-south diameter of the viewing screen. A simple way of achieving this is to mount the card on an object having a convex lower surface. In our laboratory, a watch-glass has been used, with plasticene as the mounting medium. The convex surface should be mounted on a support having a round opening on top and a flat bottom. A roll of tape, a petri dish, a beaker, or any other piece of equipment having the proper shape to give stability to the setup will be satisfactory. The arrangement of the required equipment is shown in Fig 1. For the best results, the subject to be photographed should be mounted in the plane of the axis of rotation. To achieve this effect, the depth of the mass of plasticene between the background and the watch-glass is varied so that when the watch-glass is tilted back and forth on the axis, the subject to be photographed does not appear to move back and forth across the viewing screen. A permanent piece of equipment, embodying an adjustable vertical screw, with lock-nuts, could be made for this purpose. The subject may be illuminated in any manner desired. It was found that the presence of shadows intensifies the effect of depth. In taking the photographs, the concave surface is mounted so that one side of the background card is about 5' below the horizontal, while the axis remains in the horizontal plane. The subject is focused carefully on the ground glass and a picture is taken. The card is then tilted so that the opposite side is about 5' below the horizontal, while the axis still remains in the horizontal plane. The subject is again put in focus and another picture is taken. After both pictures are developed and printed, they are placed side by side in the same orientation and examined with a stereoscopic viewer. If depressions appear where there ought

Pumice, pumicite, and cinders are all products of explosive volcanic eruptions. Pumice and pumicite are produced by the violent expansion of dissolved gases in a viscous silicic lava such as rhyolite or dacite. Pumice is a light-colored, cellular, almost frothy rock made up of glass-walled bubble casts. It may occur as coherent, massive blocks composed of highly vesicular glassy lava in either a flow or vent filling, or it may be more or less fragmented by violent eruption. Pumicite has the same origin, chemical composition, and glassy structure as pumice differing only in particle size. Particles less than 4 mm in diam are designated pumicite. Pumice is usually found relatively close to the vent from which it was erupted while pumicite may be carried by winds for great distances before settling as an accumulation of fine-grained ash or tuffaceous sediment. Volcanic cinders are the reddish to black vesicular fragments that pile up during explosive eruptions of volcanoes of basaltic composition. Most deposits of cinders occur as cones or mounds of stratified fragments that range in size from a fraction of an inch to several inches in diameter. Individual cones or mounds of cinders may be several hundreds of feet in diameter and as much as 500 ft high. Properties The properties that make pumice and pumicite useful in industrial applications include: low-bulk density, good heat and sound insulating properties, and excellent abrasive capability. Cinders, even though less cellular and somewhat heavier, also have a variety of industrial uses. Uses The main use of pumice and cinders continues to be in the construction industry as road-surfacing material, railroad ballast, building block aggregate, in lightweight structural concrete, and as plaster aggregate. Both pumice and pumicite continue to be used as abrasives for polishing glass, metal, leather, stone, and wood. Some scouring powders and soaps also contain pumicite. Minor uses include fillers, absorbents, carriers for insecticides, catalyst carriers, filters, and soil conditioners. Pumicite is also used in sizable quantities as a pozzolanic additive in monolithic concrete where it increases the workability, strength, and durability of the concrete and reduces the heat of hydration. Volcanic cinders are generally denser and more coarsely cellular than most pumice. Markets for cinders include aggregate for road construction and surfacing and in lightweight concretes, particularly blocks. Some producers having access to both pumice and cinders offer a variety of blends of the two materials to block manufacturers. Most pumice deposits are unconsolidated and usually have a minimum of overburden. Mining is by open pit and can be easily carried out with conventional loading equipment. Sometimes air-drying precedes hauling to a crushing and screening plant which yields the size product desired. Multiple bins at railroad hauling facilities permit blending if desired. Pumice for abrasive use may require more sophisticated processing by fine grinding and air classification before being bagged for market. There is acute need for a method that will measure the size distribution of finely divided materials, particularly when the particle sizes are smaller than the openings of the finest screen cloth regularly available for testing. Several methods and types of apparatus are in common use, but none are entirely satisfactory for all purposes. The commonest methods are microscopic grain counts, elutriation by liquids or air, and sedimentation. Valuable results have been secured by air elutriating devices, typified by the Haultain Infra-Sizer and the Pearson Air Analyzer. These are especially useful in obtaining sized fractions that can be examined and analyzed separately. They are particularly advantageous because the sizes of the samples produced are adequate for a considerable amount of subsequent manipulation and testing. The sedimentation methods, such as the Wagner and Klein turbidimeters, and the sedimentation balance, do not deliver sized fractions, but they do provide a means for reasonably rapid comparative determina-tions of fineness and surface area, which are important in many industries. The sedimentation balance consists essentially of a balance pan suspended in a liquid that contains falling particles. These are weighed as they settle onto the pan, and the time rate of settling is determined. The size distribution is computed from the settling rate. The balance appears to be inherently more accurate than any of the other methods, and it has served a useful purpose in the study of numerous problems, but there have been limitations which have restricted its scope of application. Because of the essential simplicity of the method, it was felt that intensive investigation might lead to modifications that would make it a valuable tool [or the operators in industries that require precise information regarding the results secured from grinding equipment. A large number of size-distribution determinations below 200 mesh were required in connection with a particular research problem in fine grinding. The sedimentation balance was used in this investigation, and a technique was gradually developed that ultimately gave good results. A serious difficulty appeared early in the work. It was discovered that less material always settled on the sedimentation pan and more on the bottom of the containing jar than could be accounted for by calculation, and also that the material that settled to the bottom of the jar outside the edges of the pan was considerably finer than that on the pan. This segregation was so great that the distribution obtained for the finer sizes was obviously very much in error; material ground to about the degree of comminution of cement might have only 60 per cent of the calculated weight actually settling on the pan, and the error increased with the fine-

When calculating the pressure-volume characteristics of projected mine-ventilating circuits by orthodox methods, certain basic assumptions are required in order to employ the various available empirical data. It is assumed, for example, that the mine air is an incompressible fluid subjected to isothermal flow, an assumption sufficiently accurate for practical purposes since pressure and temperature differentials are small throughout the average circuit. A more erroneous assumption, however, is that all air is accounted for as it travels throughout the mine. No attempt is usually made to evaluate stopping leakage as it occurs; instead, the air volume required at the last crosscuts is assumed to enter the mine, travel the various intake air courses intact, sweep the workings and travel out by the return air courses to the point or points of exit from the mine. Actually, there is a leakage of air from intake to return at every stopping, the quantity of this leakage depending upon the tightness of the stopping and the pressure difference across the stopping. Unfortunately, a lack of empirical data and knowledge of the condition of individual stoppings makes an exact analysis of underground stopping leakage impossible. Generally, leakage is most severe through the old stoppings outbye the circuit. These are also subjected to higher pressure differences than the newer inbye stoppings. Therefore the circuit air volume diminishes at a decreasing rate progressing from outbye to inbye the circuit. Consider a simple mine circuit consisting of one intake and one return air course, each of equal and uniform section area and interconnected at regular intervals with crosscuts equipped with stoppings. At any point X inbye the circuit the air volume q on the intake air course equals that on the return air course and decreases with diminishing rate from outbye to inbye the circuit between the limits of Q1 completely outbye and Q completely inbye. Such a volume change is represented by curve a, Fig. I, which is computed with the aid of the equation q = Q1- (Q1- Q)(X + L)N. This equation results from the general algebraic equation of form q = k, — kXN after solving for kl and k with the knowledge that completely outbye X = o and q = QL, also completely inbye X = L and q = Q. Curves a, b and c, Fig. I, show values of q as ordinates versus values of X as abscissas, for values of N equal to 0.50, 1.00 and 2.00, respectively. Distribution of underground stopping 1eakage directly affects the air-volume distribution along the circuit, which in turn determines the circuit pressure gradient. To deliver any required air volume inbye a circuit or portion thereof requires a higher circuit-pressure differential if stoppings leak than is necessary with tight stoppings. Every mining engineer engaged in the analysis of projected mine-ventilation circuits is therefore confronted with the problem of making proper allowance for the effects of leaking stoppings. The coal industry in Alabama, centered in Birmingham, has pioneered coal-bene-ficiation practice in the United States. The nature of the coal seams and mining methods employed have necessitated use of equipment and methods best adapted to the local conditions. Although all of the 30 or more coal seams now being mined in the state receive beneficiation, only the three most important producers of coking coals, the Pratt, Mary Lee and Black Creek, are discussed in detail. Nature of the seams, washability characteristics and equipment used are given as examples of the extent of work and progress in this field. The coal seams in Alabama are relatively thin and pitching, making mining difficult and expensive. Most of them are characterized by thin partings of rock or shale in the seam itself, as well as laminations of bone and rash. Mechanical mining methods have increased the occlusions from roof and floor to such an extent that nearly all the coal mined in the state must receive some treatment before it can be put on the market. During the year ending Sept. 30, 1943,' 18,129,792 tons of coal were mined in the state and 14,364,177 tons, or 79.2 per cent, received treatment. Excluding from the total the 1,223,014 tons produced by small wagon mines and the hand-picked lump coal, the amount re- ceiving beneficiation would be more than 90.00 per cent. This is, by far, greater than in any other coal-producing state. The earliest record of coal beneficiation in Alabama was the installation in 1890 of an experimental Lurig washer by Alexander Cunningham, for the Sloss Iron and Steel Co. at its blast furnace in Birmingham.2 In 1894 the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. introduced the English Robinson washer, a combination of a hydraulic classifier and centrifugal machine. Erskine Ramsay, who has contributed so much to the coal industry, saw its possibilities as well as its mechanical defects and soon had his inventive mind at work. He added a sludge tank of his own design, and many Robinson-Ramsay washers were installed in Alabama and other states. The Stewart jig appeared in 1900, followed by the Montgomery jig in 1910 and both have found extensive use. Increased interest in this field led to new designs, such as the American, Elmore, Burke and Faust. The first Baum-type Norton jig was operated in 1930 and within the last five years six large installations of this type have been made by the McNally-Pitts-burg, Jeffrey and Link-Belt Companies. Wet-washing tables were introduced in 1922 but not extensively used until recently. The two most popular types are the Deister-Overstrom and Deister Plat-O. The coal-cleaning equipment used in Alabama has been relatively simple, yet efficient, but as the amount of impurities in the raw coal has been increased by mechanical mining and labor costs have become higher, much interest has been shown in sand cones, froth flotation and

By 1950 or soon thereafter facilities will be available in foreign countries for the production, transportation, and refining of about 4,305,000 bbl per day of crude oil—a volume not far short of current United States output. This is indicated by announced plans for foreign expansion, - some of the work being already under way. The projected potential production is about 1,500,000 bbl per day or 50 pct above the record-setting foreign production of 2,810,000 bbl daily in 1946. The scheduled new foreign facilities are equivalent to almost one third of the present facilities of the United States. Fears that so much additional foreign oil may flood world markets and disrupt the domestic industry of the United States are not justified. The projected foreign expansion apparently has been planned on a sound business basis, with careful consideration of the world's actual need for all the projected additional production. Materially increased world demand for petroleum promises to absorb the increased supplies without ill effect upon the domestic industry. Even by applying conservative estimates of both foreign and domestic demand, it is indicated that world requirements can absorb the projected larger foreign output and still permit continued increase in United States production. World demand would have to increase only 5.7 pct per year in the 1947 to 1950 period to absorb the prospective supply. Such an increase may be conservatively projected, in view of past and current trends. Introduction Recent announcements of plans for expanding petroleum facilities in the Middle East and Venezuela foreshadow an unusually sharp increase in foreign production in the immediate future. Therefore, the next few years will bring far-reaching changes in world petroleum affairs, with foreign petroleum production and other activities assuming much greater importance than formerly. Tabulation of figures on development already under way or planned indicates that in the next several years facilities will be available for producing, transporting and refining twice the prewar production of foreign fields and about 50 pct or nearly 1,500,000 bbl a day above their record-level output of 1946. To say that foreign fields may be producing such an enlarged quantity by 1950 is, of course, a statement of great significance to everyone connected .with the oil industry and especially to those of the American petroleum industry. A production of 1,500,000 bbl daily is equal to the combined yield of the states of Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and New Mexico. This means that within the next several years foreign petroleum facilities will undergo a new expansion equivalent to one third of the present facilities of the United States. To think of such an expansion in foreign production is to raise at this meeting the question of what this prospective foreign development means for the United States, the American petroleum industry in general, and the American engineer and technologist in particular. The mechanism of grain refinement by the addition of small amounts of titanium, molybdenum, zirconium, tungsten, and chromium to aluminum was investigated. The results indicate that the grain refinement is caused by the peritectic reaction which, by transforming the intermetallic compound into crystals of aluminum solid solution, seeds the melt with nuclei above the freezing point of aluminum. THE feasibility of reducing the grain size of aluminum alloy castings by the addition of small amounts of titanium, zirconium, molybdenum, tungsten, columbium, boron, and chromium has been known for a long time, and the use of some of these elements as grain refiners is common practice in the aluminum foundry industry. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the mechanism by which these additions produce the grain refinement. Asato et al., on the basis of extensive work on copper, antimony, and silver alloys, presented a theory of grain refinement based on the occurrence of the peritectic reaction. Briefly, this theory states that during cooling of the melt crystals of the primary phase form, which react peritectically with the liquid upon further cooling. The peritectic reaction transforms at least partially the primary crystals into crystals of the secondary phase, which then act as nuclei for solidification of the remaining melt. As the peritectic reaction takes place the primary crys- tals break in pieces, and each piece acts as a nucleus. Fine dendritic crystals which can easily break are the most effective for grain refinement. Sicha and Boehm," in investigating the refining effect of titanium on an AI-Cu alloy, concluded that TiA1, crystals serve as nuclei to initiate crystallization, but did not offer further information on the mechanism of refinement. Bonsack in the discussion of their paper suggested that refinement was due to clouds of some solid in the melt, probably TiO² which hindered grain growth. Eborall,' after studying the effect of titanium, zirconium, vanadium, tungsten, columbium, chromium, and boron on some alloys, concluded that the peritectic reaction was not an essential feature of grain refinement. Her conclusion was based mainly upon the observation that under her experimental conditions (sand casting) the Al-Cr alloys, which undergo a peritectic reaction, did not show appreciable refinement. Cibula" investigated the mechanism of grain refinement and reported that two types of grain refinement exist: 1—Grain refinement produced by restriction of grain growth by the concentration gradient mechanism proposed by Northcott.' 2— Grain refinement produced by the presence of particles in the melt, upon which the melt crystallizes easily. He further concluded that very marked grain refinement results from a combination of the two mechanisms.
