The work of the Committee during the year 1914 was especially directed to the securing of a larger representation in the Institute of those engaged in coal mining and coking. While these industries exceed in volume and in monetary importance all other mining industries in the United States, the membership of the Institute representing them has in recent years been relatively small. It was thought that an increase in the membership of the Institute obtained from among those engaged in these industries was desirable in order to increase interest in the work of the Institute, for this result can only be reached by securing the presentation and publication of a larger number of papers relating to these industries. It is evident that the reading of such papers will tend to increase the attendance at the local and general meetings of the Institute. Sessions of the Coal and Coke Committee were held and a number of papers relating to these subjects were presented at the meetings at Butte, Salt Lake, and Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh meeting especially being planned with this in view. The activities of the Local Section of the Institute organized in the Pennsylvania Anthracite region have reawakened interest in that district and it is hoped that the same object can be obtained in the bituminous coal fields, either through the organization of one or more. local sections, affiliation with some of the local coal-mining societies, or through activities of the Coal and Coke Committee. Referring to the work of the Committee in its efforts to increase the membership of the Institute, the Committee desires to acknowledge the services rendered by many members scattered throughout the various coal-mining districts of the United States, in compiling lists of those qualified for membership in the Institute, but who have not yet become members. The lists so compiled comprised about 1,100 names, which were furnished to the Committee by the co-operation of 40 or 50 members of the Institute.

THE United States Bureau of Mines established at Bruceton, Pa., in 1909, an experimental mine, for the purpose of testing the means of preventing and limiting mine explosions. During the last ten years numerous explosions have been caused to originate in .this mine for investigative purposes and the rate of propagation of the explosion wave, the pressure developed per unit of area by the explosions, and, the general results of the explosions have been carefully recorded and. studied. Means of preventing mine explosions or of limiting them to the areas in which they originate have been developed. A great deal of valuable information has been derived from the work in this mine and much more useful and valuable information will be obtained in. the future. The writer would plead, not for the opening of experimental mines in all the important coal-producing fields in the United States, but for the opening of demonstration mines, or mines in which experiments could be made with the various details of coal mining. The United States Department of Agriculture has established, in nearly every state, stations that undertake experimental work for the benefit of the agricultural interests. In addition, small demonstration plats are set aside, in suitable locations in the farming districts, where various crops are grown under scientific direction, so that the farmers in the neighborhood can note the results obtained and profit thereby. Something like this should be done for the coal-mining industry. If experimental or demonstration mines were established, methods of working adapted to local conditions could be worked out. Owing to competition in the same markets, small capitalization, or low profits, it may be an utter impossibility for any one company to try a new method of mining. Labor conditions may prevent the trial of a new method of working. It may be impossible or inadvisable to disturb existing working conditions for fear of causing trouble among the miners through real or fancied changes in the scale of wages.

The number of completions in 1944 in Ohio was only slightly greater than completions in the preceding year, but the initial daily volumes both of oil wells and gas wells declined considerably. The dry-hole ratio was a little lower than in 1943, even though in the year under review considerable effort was made to find new production. No new areas of consequence were discovered. Thirteen new gas pools, the largest of which was 1000 acres and the average 565 acres, were opened during the year. Eleven of these pools were in the Clinton sand, one was in the Oriskany, and one was in the Berea. Approximately 15 small pools might also be rated as discoveries, but because only one or two wells have thus far been completed in each, they cannot at present be properly evaluated. The latter pools average about 120 acres each. Some extensions were made to existing gas pools. The number of oil wells drilled was only one less than in 1943, yet compared with the year 1941, when twice as many oil wells were drilled, the difference is startling. Effective Aug. I, 1944, a blanket subsidy was granted of 35¢ per barrel on all Cleveland-Chatham, Coming, and Lima grades of oil, and 75¢ per barrel on Pennsylvania grade crude. The subsidy was authorized by the Office of Price Administration, with reimbursement to purchasers of the various grades made through the Defense Supplies Corporation, a branch of Reconstruction Finance Corporation. For several years the small operator, particularly the owner of stripper wells, was in a serious position. The subsidy has been a means of real help and, in addition to aiding the operator, it has prolonged the life of many small wells that otherwise would have been abandoned, with consequent loss of daily production and unre-covered reserves. Ores of the Mammoth mining district, some 45 miles northeast of Tucson, Arizona, are treated by Mammoth-St. Anthony, Ltd. The ores now treated come from a complex system of veins and faults, comprising three mines, in close proximity: The Mohawk, Mammoth and Collins. The ore treated in the past was oxide ore, which contains economic amounts of gold, silver, lead, molybdenum, and vanadium (as wulfenite and vanadanite). The lead-zinc sulphide ore has never been treated before. The Ore The sulphide ore contains galena, sphalerite, marmatite, pyrite and some chal-copyrite, covellite, chalcocite and bornite, as well as small amounts of gold and silver. The value of the ore is principally in the lead and zinc content. The lead-zinc sulphides are substantially liberated at a minus 65-mesh grind. However, a large part of the chalcopyrite and other copper minerals is not freed, but remains as pin points on the sphalerite. Economically, the copper is unimportant. The gangue is a rhyolite granite, with very little limestone. There is no molybdenum or vanadikm in the sulphide ore. History of Sulphide Treatment Test work on samples of the sulphide ore was conducted by several equipment companies, the Arizona Bureau of Mines and the company's laboratory. Results of this test work indicated that for some reason, which at the time could not be explained, recoveries would be only about 65 per cent lead and 50 per cent zinc. Notwithstanding this, because of the nation's need for metals, the management built a 150-ton treatment plant. The mill was started in June 1942. During December 1942, using the standard method of treating lead-zinc ore, the monthly results were as shown in Table I. These results were poor. Too much lead was in the zinc concentrate, and too much zinc in the lead concentrate. It should be noted here. that prior to December attempts were made to depress the sphalerite with large and varied amounts of cyanide, zinc sulphate, and sodium sulphite with poor results.

Independently of the recognized chemical reactions involved in the production of metallic zinc, the process is affected by physical conditions in efficiency, and by commercial as well as technical economy. To offer some observations concerning these conditions is the purpose of the present paper. Among the important elements of this problem is the physical nature of the particles constituting the mass of zinc oxide to be reduced. This may be the result, either of the manner of the original deposition of the mineral, or of the treatment to which it has been subjected in the roasting-furnace. The physical character of the reducing-agent is another important factor, since the carbon of some coals is much more active in reduction than that of others. The degree of fineness, whether of ore or coal, or both, likewise plays a significant part. These factors, together with the physical admixture of foreign substances with the ore, may give rise also to chemical " side-reactions," sometimes hindering or retarding, and sometimes accelerating, the reduction. Finally, thermal conditions, including the relative conductivity of the materials, deserve to be taken into account. In firing a furnace with retorts charged with a mixture of roasted ore and coal, the first reaction is naturally the boiling-off of the contained water; the next is the distillation of the light hydrocarbons from the coal; the next is the reduction of the iron oxide to protoxide and sub-oxide successively, and then to metallic sponge; and the final reaction is the reduction of the zinc oxide in the ore by the carbon to metallic zinc. The Nicola Valley coal-field is small, but it seems likely to become important because of its commanding position in a rich region that is developing rapidly. Bituminous coking-coal in workable quantity has not been found at any other point between the Crow's Nest Pass region, about 400 miles to the east, and Vancouver island, 250 miles westward. The Canadian Pacific railway reached the Nicola valley two years ago ; two other lines, the Canadian Northern and the Great Northern, are building towards the valley. The vast region between the Rocky mountains and the Pacific coast, extending northward for several hundred miles from the international boundary, which has been the scene of extensive mining- and smelting-operations for many years, is filling up with settlers, who are attracted by the wealth of minerals and timber, the rich soil of the valleys, and the fine climate. The Nicola river, flowing westward through the valley of that name in the Yale district, discharges into the Thompson river, which is the eastern branch of the Fraser. The transcontinental line of the Canadian Pacific railway crosses the mouth of the Nicola river at Spence's bridge, 178 miles from Vancouver. From Spence's bridge the Nicola branch line ascends the valley for 40 miles to Merritt, the coal-center, and continues 7 miles farther to the town of Nicola. Thus the haul from the mines at an elevatioiz of 2,000 ft. to salt water is 218 miles down river-grades. The Nicola branch will be continued about 150 miles farther eastward to Penticton, where it will connect with an extension of the line through the rich Kootenay and Boundary districts. The Canadian government has granted a subsidy of $6,000 per mile, to which the provincial government is planning to add $5,000 per mile, to assist in the construction of the Nicola extension. The secondary metals industry might well be defined as the group of remelters, smelters, refiners, and manufacturers that convert scrap metals or residues to commercial forms. In this industry, scrap metals and residues are processed to pro- duce refined metals, ingot alloys, fabricated shapes, and chemical products. Secondary metal is defined as metal recovered from commercial scrap, that is, scrap that has entered the processor's plant in scrap form. Metal recovered by a manufacturer from "home scrap" generated in his own plant is not considered to be secondary, because it represents part of the original stock that simply requires additional treatment before emerging as a finished product. In any economic study, a basic point of measurement must be chosen, and in the case of secondary metals, the melting pot or its counterpart represents the stage in which metal is converted from scrap to some more usable form. Beyond this point there is often no means to distinguish between secondary metal recovered from scrap and virgin metal produced directly from ore. In the last fifteen or twenty years the secondary metals industry has grown to major importance. Some consumers distrust secondary metals, but frequently this distrust serves only to prove an inability to keep up with the times. J. Bruce Clemmer, J. B. Rosenbaum, and C. H. Schack (U.S. Bureau of Mines, Salt Lake City)—We have watched with considerable interest Three Kids development of Manganese Inc. and have been impressed by the ingenuity with which management and staff have solved their many obstinate handling problems. Mr. McCarroll has been lenient in describing the difficulties faced by the company in developing a process for beneficiating Three Kids ore. The operation, equivalent in size to a 20,000-ton sulphide ore plant, is treating a unique ore by a flotation process pioneered by Manganese Inc. Perhaps the magnitude of the conditioning and flotation problems peculiar to Three Kids ore can be better appraised when it is pointed out that two-thirds to three-fourths of the ore is floated in the rougher step and that the four stages of cleaning which follow are equivalent to floating the whole plant feed two to three times. Our experience in both laboratory and pilot plant flotation of Three Kids and other manganese ores leads us to agree with Mr. McCarroll that suitable conditioning is a prime requisite for successful oil-emulsion flotation. The difficulties of proper conditioning were demonstrated in pilot plant processing of Artillery Peak manganese ore at our Boulder City, Nev., experiment station. Over three months of experiments and extensive plant revision were required before satisfactory conditioning was obtained in the 25-ton-per-day plant. Such factors as time, type and intensity of mixing, aeration, surface to volume relationship, and power input are still being studied by the Bureau of Mines in hopes of learning how best to condition manganese pulps for oil-emulsion flotation. Other factors affecting flotation of manganese with oil emulsion also deserve attention. The three basic ingredients of fertilizers are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen comes from natural gas or other sources and is usually a "manufactured" ingredient. Phosphorus and potassium come from mineral sources which are mined in open pit and underground mines all over the world. Phosphorus is one of the 15 chemical elements needed to sustain life. Along with nitrogen and potassium, it is essential to the fertility of the soil and to the growth of plant life. Plants require phosphorus for proper soil conditions, early root formation, and crop maturity. Humans and animals require phosphorus for bone and tooth development. The primary raw material for phosphorous fertilizers is phosphate rock. It is found and mined in many areas of the world. Morocco, the United States, USSR, Tunisia, and some Pacific Islands are the leading rock producers. Other sources of phosphate are guano, bone meal, and other natural organics, but these comprise a very small percentage of all phosphate used. Phosphate rock in the United States is mined in Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Idaho, and Montana. Florida alone produces about 70% of all the rock mined in this country, mostly from a 20 X 30 mile area in Polk and Hillsborough Counties in central Florida known as the Bone Valley district. There are phosphate reserves in many parts of Florida, and within the past three years mining has begun in north Florida in Hamilton Country (see Fig. 1). In 1967, world phosphate rock production was about 75 million short tons (st). A necessary condition for a uniaxial stress distribution in compression testing is that the specimen end surfaces make full contact with the apparatus compression plates. In addition all compression surfaces must be machined perpendicularly to the loading axis. In general this condition is not sufficiently fulfilled in a simple apparatus. Therefore on application of the load the compression plate may first touch the specimen at one point only. This may cause crumbling of the specimen if the material under investigation is brittle (e.g., ionic crystals). It also precludes a precise study of the beginning of deformation as the effective cross sectional area is unknown. In addition a complex stress state is set up which renders quantitative work impossible, e.g., on dislocation density and arrangement as a function of stress. To overcome these difficulties a "self-adjusting" upper compression plate is required. A simple and reliable method of achieving this is shown in Fig. 1: A steel hemisphere is placed on the specimen. As soon as the compression plate (which no longer needs precise machining) makes contact with this hemisphere the load is uniformly distributed over the whole specimen surface, and a homogeneous uniaxial state of stress results. An advantage of the method is that the loading is always central, even when the specimen surface is not parallel to the compression plate (Fig. 1, dashed line). Therefore to a first approximation a uniaxial state of stress is maintained if the misorientation of the specimen end surface is small. Two typical stress strain curves of identically prepared sodium chloride crystals are shown in Fig. 2; curve 1 was taken without and curve II with the hemisphere under otherwise identical conditions. The improvement in the accuracy of defining the beginning of elastic and plastic deformation is clearly indicated. Mr. Eschholz discusses the particular case of large precipitators installed in connection with large metallurgical operations, and receiving their high-potential energy through the conversion of alternating current to direct current by means of the mechanical rectifier. He classifies these mechanical rectifier installations, according to source of power, as follows: System A.-Applications utilizing individual alternating-current generators, either single-phase or polyphase, installed exclusively for furnishing energy to one or more transformer-rectifier-precipitator units. System. B.-Applications having no special alternating-current generators, but utilizing the existing alternating-current industrial or lighting mains to supply the energy to one or more transformer-rectifier-precipitator units. System C.-Applications receiving their energy from high-tension power circuits supplied directly to potential regulator-rectifier-precipitator units. I do not intend here to enter upon a detailed technical discussion of the foregoing classes, which would really interest only the manufacturers of electrical apparatus and the electrical engineers. In the early days of the lithium industry most of the production was from lepidolite, zinnwaldite, and amblygonite. Nearly all the early extraction processes described in the literature involve heating the finely ground mineral with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. On subsequent water leaching most of the bases present in the mineral (especially aluminum) are dissolved as sulphates. As a result, the leach solution required extensive chemical purification before the lithium could be precipitated as carbonate. Following the remarkable growth of the lithium industry to its present size, zinnwaldite and amblygonite ores must be considered of minor importance only. Attention is now focused on spodumene, abundant enough in North America to be a major source of supply, and there are important supplies of lepidolite and petalite in Africa. The extraction processes described below all apply to spodumene, although several will also operate on other lithium minerals, such as petalite. Base Exchange with Alkali Sulphates: A distinct advance was made with the disclosures of Wadman and von Girsewalt. In these methods the finely ground silicate ore (spodumene or lepidolite) is intimately mixed with an excess of alkali sulphate (usually K2S04) in at least a 1 to 1 proportion, and the mixture was heated to a relatively high temperature. Base exchange results, with the formation of lithium sulphate. A water leach dissolves the lithium sulphate, together with the excess potassium sulphate. Successful operation of this type of process requires very thorough grinding and mixing, as well as careful temperature control. The use of K,SO, is objectionable from cost considerations since purification of lithium carbonate re- quires the use of potassium carbonate, if the K2S04 is to be recovered and recycled. The lower solubility of K,SO, as compared with Na,SO, is also objectionable, since it limits the concentration of the Li,SO, solution to be precipitated by K,CO,. Early laboratory-scale investigation of this process by Lithium Corp. was not encouraging

IT has been pointed out by Cottrell' and Fisher that long-range order would produce superdis-locations, consisting of two partial dislocations separated by an out-of-phase region. The mutual repulsion of the partial dislocations is balanced by the surface tension of the out-of-phase domain boundary joining the dislocations (Fig. 1). The calculation of the equilibrium spacing of the dislocations has yet to be made. The argument uses the Bragg and Williams theory of long-range order." The metal under consideration is the A-B, body-centered type, such as ß brass. The slip system is taken to be [Ill], (110). Since nearest-neighbor interactions are considered, only the atoms position in the two (110) planes adjoining the slip plane have to be labeled. Corner sites are called a and a' in the top and bottom (110) planes, respectively. Similarly ß and ß are the body-centered sites. Thus, a and ß and 0 and a sites are nearest neighbors. Assume that the bottom plane moves and the top plane is fixed during slip; the atoms in a and ß sites exchange sites but atoms in a and ß sites remain fixed. Fraction of A atoms in a sites, for example, is given by fa and fa. for the un-slipped and slipped condition, respectively. Similarly number of A atoms in the a sites is given by n, and n'a for the unslipped and slipped condition, respectively. When the skip-hoist was first tried as a means of filling the blast-furnace it made a great many enemies and very few friends among furnace managers. This state of affairs continued until the Duquesne furnaces were built, which demonstrated not only the possibilities of a furnace-stack in the way of production, but also the ability of the skip-hoist to charge the materials necessary to produce the large tonnlage obtained. Every furnace manager, who has operated stacks fitted with the vertical hoist and the hand-barrow system of filling, remembers that the momentous question about the furnace, particularly during a good run, was: "Are you keeping her full ?" and many a good run has been spoiled by the furnace " getting away from the men." With the new birth of the skip-hoist this trouble was eliminated ; but alas! Other and more important difficulties arose. The distribution of the stock, the importance of which is never learned until many different ores and fuels have been tried, demanded closer attention. With all the defects of the hand-barrow system, the distribution—When the top fillers were conscientious in carrying out the scheme of filling arranged after thoughtful consideration by the manager—mas above criticism. It is said that the modern skip-hoist, equipped with an elliptical hopper and receiving-cylinder, and discharging over a small bell into the main hopper, will give just as good results as those obtained with hand-barrow charging, but I cannot agree with this statement. The solubility of hydrogen in pure iron and pure nickel, and of nitrogen in pure iron, has been determined and agrees well with earlier data. Nitrogen is insoluble in pure nickel and cobalt. The solubility of nitrogen in Fe-Ni alloys also confirms earlier- work. The solubility of hydrogen in Fe-Ni alloys increases non-linearly with increase in nickel content, but the solubility of hydrogen in Ni-Co and Fe-Co alloys reaches a minimum at 75 and 50 at. pet, respectively. The solubility of nitrogen in Fe-Co alloys decreases approximately linearly with increase in. cobalt content. Nitrogen is insoluble in Ni-Co alloys. Determined interaction parameters are in good agreement with predictions of Gokcen and Ohlani. THE solubility of hydrogen and nitrogen in liquid iron and iron alloys has been studied by various investigators.'-l' The method of solubility measuremerit due to Sievertsl is usually preferred when the vapor pressures of the liquid components are sufficiently small, but other techniques such as sampling the equilibrated melt and then analyzing by vacuum fusion have been used quite often. Previously reported data on the solubility of hydrogen and nitrogen in ostensibly pure liquid iron are summarized in Table I; certain of the quoted results were obtained by interpolation of the published data. Agreement between the various investigators is only fair, indicative of the experimental difficulties involved in obtaining gas solubility data. The only report found on the solubility of hydrogen in pure nickel is that of Sieverts.2 The solubility of nitrogen in iron-nickel alloys has received some attention, 10, 11 the results indicating that the solubility decreases with increase in nickel content, becoming zero for pure nickel. This title is somewhat of a misnomer, because it does not accurately describe the phase of heat generation and application coming within the scope of this discussion. This paper is concerned primarily with that particular phase of radiant-heat transfer sometimes erroneously referred to as "shielded" radiant heat, to differentiate it from the open radiant heat of either flame or settings, in which the actual source of the radiant heat is a small incandescent furnace composed of a highly conductive superrefractory, within whose walls the combustion of the fuel is completed. This small furnace is usually located directly in the furnace proper, and although its refractory walls do shield the heat-absorbing surfaces from contact with the gases of combustion, there is no interference with the radiant heat given off by the furnace itself. We do not believe it either necessary or advisable to shield or screen radiant heat when properly controlled and applied. We do believe it essential to prevent the excessively hot gases of combustion from coming in contact with those parts of the heat-absorbing structure that are already receiving heat at high rates by radiation. In connection with any process for the refining of oil with which we are familiar, we are convinced that it is most advantageous to transfer the maximum of the heat generated in the form of radiant heat, applied directly to the heat-absorbing surfaces without the interposition of any form of shield or screen to prevent or reduce the radiant-heat transfer. While the term radiant heat is broadly used to cover all heat energy transferred from one body to another by radiation, in contradistinction to heat given up by gases in direct contact with the heat-absorbing structure (convection) or transmitted simply by conduction, in furnace work it is perhaps more often limited to the heat rays given off either by

Detailed production statistics listing the operations according to producing sands, districts, etc., are not available for New York State and are scarcely obtainable without extraordinary effort and expense, hardly warranted by the current rate of developments. The oil industry is practically stabilized, so far as exploration for new sources of supply are concerned; no new pools have been tapped in the last 25 or 30 years. There is little prospect of extending the boundary of the oil fields beyond their present limits, though possibly some additional reserves may be found below the present productive sands. Natural gas, on the other hand, is not restricted to such confined areas. Drilling for gas has been fairly active, under the stimulation of some important finds in formations that previously were overlooked. The year's field operations will be covered somewhat fully. Oil production, which has been steadily advancing for a number of years, showed a further moderate gain in 1936. The output for 11 months (figures for December are not yet available) was 4,217,000 bbl., indicating a total for the year of around 4,600,000 bbl. The increase was about 10 per cent, a rate maintained for some time. Prices were more satisfactory than in the preceding five years, with an advance to $2.57 a barrel before the year's close. New York State yield is all paraffin-base, in the same class with high-grade Pennsylvania oil. Most of the output is now obtained by the water drive, which has given a new lease of life to the fields and promises to bring the total to about 200,000,000 bbl. before the known acreage has been exhausted by this method. Before its introduction the annual production was under 1,000,000 bbl. a year. The fields cover an aggrcgate area of 55,000 acres, with some 17,000 wells in operation. Development Exploring for natural gas in New York in 1936 outside of the old established pools continued actively, as in the previous year. There was an increase in total initial production. In June, 1911, the writer spent a few days in studying the economic geology of the vicinity of Park City. During this rather hurried visit a number of specimens of ore were collected, which have since been examind. The results of these investigations show that bournonite (PbCu-SbSa) is present in the ores in greater or less quantity. This fact has never before been reported, as far as can be learned. The failure to recognize this mineral is due to its similarity to tetrahedrite, with which it has probably been confused during a long period of years. Jamesonite (Pb2sb2s6) has been reported from the region in a rather doubtful manner, but the writer has seen it in notable amounts from several mines, and can offer the first analysis of this mineral from the district. Calamine (HzZn2SiO5) was found at one mine and has never been ecognized and reported from the district. Geogbaphy and Geology Park City, Utah, is located at an elevation of about 7,000 ft. above sea level on the eastern slope of the Wasatch mountains. It is situated approximately 25 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. ' The geology and ore deposits have been described in detail by Bout well and Woolsey.' The mines visited are situated south-southeast from the town. The Silver King Coalition mine is located in Woodside gulch about 1 mile southeast of Park City, at an altitude of about 8,100 ft. The other mines visited were the Daly West and Quincy, which are in Empire canyon about 2 miles sontheast of the town, at elevations of 8,300 to 8,500 ft. respectively. The Daly Judge tunnel goes into the mountain from Empire canyon about 1 mile south of the city, at an altitude of 7,700ft.

The area discussed herein, commonly known as the North Texas district, embraces the following 10 counties: Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita and Wilbarger. It is underlain by two major structural features. The northernmost portion of the district, including Cooke, Montague, northern Clay, Wichita, Wilbarger, Foard and Hardeman counties, is underlain by the system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift, which is parallel to and closely related to the Wichita-Amarillo uplift of Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. While the presence of a great majority of the numerous oil fields of the area is traceable to this feature, the production in Archer, southwestern Clay and southeastern Baylor counties is due to the influence of what is known as the Cisco Arch (so called because of its influence on Cisco deposition), the axis of which extends in a north\lest-southeast direction across Archer County. Discussion of Tables Preliminary to discussing developments during the year 1933, it appears advisable to offer a few words of explanation on Tables 1 and 2, included as part of this paper, in which an effort has been made to sumlllarize oil and gas development in North Texas to Jan. 1, 1934. One of the chief objectives of this publication is understood to be to show production by individual pools, and, if possible, by distinct pays in a pool. This the authors haw been unable to do for North Texas. It is a generally recognized fact that there are well over 100 individual pools, which should perhaps be mow properly called "productive spots," in Archer county alone, with perhaps an even greater number in Wichita County. It can be found upon investigation that an apparently continuous productive area covering Many acres consists of a half dozen lenticular sands, all stratigraphically different,, which produce only under portions of the apparently continuous area. It is also a fact that practically all gross production records are carried by the various intcrcsted parties by major districts or by counties. It is obvious therefore

There seems to be dire need of repeated preachment against the too-frequent sad neglect of instrumental surveying and mapping in geological surveys. The value of the map as an illustration of the statements and opinions of a report is too apt to be overlooked; and its essential necessity in working out during its construction the proper conclusions from the observed facts is generally altogether misunderstood. Practical geology seeks, of course, to ascertain and indicate the character of workable or unworkable beds or veins, their depth, position, dip, and horizontal course, or strike, even below the surface; also their outcrops, and therefore, if workable, their extent; and so, taking account of their thickness and specific gravity, their weight in tons. It might, therefore, be called quantitative geology. For the study of more abstruse geological questions, too, it is in many cases necessary to gain some knowledge, or reasonable opinion, in regard to such hidden facts. In some cases, careful instrumental surveys are made; in others, from necessity or choice, there are few or no instrumental observations. It was said, 15 or 20 years ago, that there was an engineer in the anthracite-regions who was capable of telling, on first glancing at a new place, exactly what coal-bed was to be found there at a certain depth, and how thick—a splendid second-sight! "' 0, there be,' " you may be tempted to exclaim, " geologists ' that I have seen' geologize ' and heard others praise, and that highly, not to speak it profanely, "'—but let them pass without being fully characterized, lest the temptation towards profanity be altogether too strong. Yet such second-sight does not exceed the expectations of many men of imperfect geological knowledge, men who have heard of marvel-ously successful geological predictions, but are unaware of
