A method was developed to quantify the three mineral species, sphalerite, galena, and pyrite in seven concentrator products. Intermineral effects were studied and a statistical analysis was undertaken to assess the accuracy and reproducibility of the method. The method is both rapid and suitable for plant control purposes. Furthermore, it requires only semiskilled laboratory personnel to carry out all the analyses.

A UTORADIOGRAPHY would appear to be sim-A pler and less time-consuming for diffusion studies than any of the radioactive tracer techniques commonly employed, namely, the sectioning, surface increase, and surface decrease techniques.' Accord- ingly, it was felt worthwhile to investigate the applicability of autoradiography to self-diffusion measurements, and gold was chosen for this purpose. The radioactive isotope Au'!'' was used, as obtained from the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Its radiation consists of p (0.97 mev) and y (0.41 mev) rays, and it has a half-life of 2.69 days. No-Screen X-ray film was found suitable for these experiments: the film has the desired high speed for recording P rays and yet is practically insensitive to y rays. REVIEW of the literature on hydrogen in steels indicates that inadequate consideration has been given to the influence of temperature gradients on segregation of this element. Even when segregation has been taken into account, the interpretation of the data has been seriously handicapped by incomplete understanding of the mechanism by which it occurred. Recognition of a mechanism which will be described as "thermal segregation" appears to rationalize many of the observed effects so well that it will be reported here with some preliminary experimental evidence. The complete quantitative evaluation of the factors controlling the mechanism will require extensive experimentation. Gouverneur Talc Co. had sought an effective means of depicting its mine at Balmat, N. Y. since it commenced operations in 1947. After considerable research the engineering department settled on the idea of a model made of plexiglas at a scale of 1 in. to 50 ft. The solid portion of this model represents the actual underground excavations. Talc is mined from two metamorphic tremolite-talc orebodies which are part of a complex fold system in this region. In the mine, stopes are laid out in panels and developed into openings 50 ft wide, 10 to 80 ft high, and perhaps 200 ft in length. Pillars usually approximate 30 ft in width. All present mining operations are contained within a block 2000 ft long, 1700 ft wide, and 1500 ft thick.

D ETERMINATION of the surface area of finely divided minerals is of interest to mineral engineers engaged in flotation, comminution, and dewatering studies. In the industrial minerals field, many materials are classified as to fineness according to their specific surface (surface area per unit weight). A method of surface area determination has been tested and used in the Richards Mineral Engineering Laboratories at M.I.T. It involves low temperature krypton adsorption measurements using the technique described by Beebe.1

For many years large mining companies were able to finance nearly all of their capital requirements from internally generated funds. However, during the last decade, funds needed for capital expenditures, dividends, and scheduled debt retirement have grown faster than cash flow. As a result the minerals industry has had to rely increasingly on other sources of funds. Getting the capital for new mining projects is a challenge, particularly for smaller companies. New methods of financing and new variations to old methods have been developed and more are needed. Commercial banks are short-term lenders. By policy their loans are limited to low risk loans-those made solely on the borrower's general credit, and secured loans where cash flow is sufficient to provide repayment within a comparatively short term. To maintain liquidity, banks prefer to make loans of less than seven years' term. If a longer loan is needed an insurance company or pension trust may take the long-term part.

The sampling of precious metal deposits entails inherent problems due to the low mineral abundances, high mineral specific gravities, skewed grade distributions and wide ranges of mineral particle sizes. Sampling practices and precautions are discussed with particular attention to each of the tripartite stages of sampling - sample acquisition, sample preparation and sample assaying. Practical examples of approaches to the sampling problem are given and some examples of significant sources of error are provided from gold and silver deposits in North America.

When ore bodies are faulted or mill feed turns refractory, mining managers and engineers act vigorously to convert imminent failure into eventual success. The recent proliferation of onerous environmental regulations and restraints is likewise a threat to successful mining enterprise, in some ways more insidious and dangerous than the problems presented by natural obstacles. The regulatory burden has become so heavy that a pall of pessimism covers much of the mining industry. In this paper we frankly recommend an approach that does not just "make the best of it" but rather directs the whole environmental process: first, to improve planning, engineering, and operating procedures; and, second, to demonstrate the need for modification of laws and regulations which are intolerably burdensome to both the mining industry and the public.

Some of the traditional areas of spiral application are described, together with examples of new applications such as treatment of fine alluvials and tailings, separation of liberated minerals at coarse sizes, and fine coal recovery.

Public Law (PL) 95-87 contains explicit demands for land use planning in its reclamation and designation sections. Both sections require recognition of local land use plans; however, they are not well integrated. Accommodation to these planning requirements affords an opportunity to create better links among local land use planners, the state's permitting authority and designation office, and mine designers. Mining companies should take a more positive interest in local land use plans and in resource inventories. States should coder handing down to local government the responsibility for accepting mine permit applications and designation of unsuitability petitions.

Although the role of slope stability has not changed, there have been changes in the mining industry which affect the geotechnician engaged in slope stability studies. The deposits currently being mined or evaluated are technically difficult , capital intensive, and economically marginal. In addition, many mining companies are now either controlled by oil companies or are financing projects through bank loans. The mining investor or decision maker is, therefore, often more sophisticated financially, but less sophisticated in mining terms. The impact of these changes will be to force the geo- technician and mining engineer to attempt to quantify risk and financial implications of a slope design. In conclusion, this paper outlines several questions which mining engineers should be asking those engaged in geotechnical studies and indicates the necessity for the mining engineer and geotechnician to work together and quantify the financial risk associated with a geotechnical design.

Our merchant marine is rapidly outgrowing our consular service, according to Edward N. Hurley, Chairman of the United States Shipping Board, who urges that steps be taken immediately to provide facilities abroad for handling the millions of tons of shipping which will be afloat under the American flag in peaceful trade when the war is over. When peace is restored and our present tonnage is scattered over world trade routes, the consular service will be inadequate to handle our ships: Besides, it will have to work against the handicaps of obsolete shipping regulations and, in many cases, lack of experience. There are nearly 100 pages in the United States consular regulations dealing with shipping platters. . Many of these regulations are based on old treaties and many of them are obsolete. There are also differences between treaties with various countries. Our consuls often lack authority to handle matters involving the interests of our sailors and shipowners. Before we can operate a modern merchant marine we must revise, standardize, and simplify this whole mass of regulations and bring them up to the efficiency of other nations' practice.

To counteract the spiralling costs of labor and materials against the fixed sale of its product, namely, gold at $35 per oz, Homestake Mining Co. has revised the milling flowsheet once and effected increases in the daily milling rate twice in the past 12 years. During this period the mining department has been able to hold production costs steady by increased productivity through technical improvements and utilization of the most modern mining by CLAUDE E. SCHMIDT and FRANK M. HOWELL, JR. 46-MINING ENGINEERING, APRIL 1963 equipment. The flowsheet alteration occurred during 1951-1953 when the two crushing plants at the shaft head frames were converted to a three-stage crushing system with the third stage closed circuited to produce a minus 5/8-in. product as rod mill feed.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) ATTEMPTS were made in 1908, at the Great Falls Works, to produce ingots direct from the Butte precipitate by smelting the material in a reverberatory refining furnace. The ingots produced in this manner averaged 99.4 per cent. of copper and 0.40 per cent. of arsenic and antimony. The copper content being considered too low, it. was decided to cast the copper into anodes and to treat the anodes in the electrolytic plant. No. 1 Furnace, in which the precipitate was treated, was a regular cathode refining furnace previously employed in making wire bar, cake, and ingot from electrolytic cathodes. The hearth of the furnace was 24 by 12 ft., having a capacity of 100,000 lb. of cathodes. The furnace was coal fired, and the copper was dipped by means of trolley ladles.
