A remarkably simple construction system that derives its internal stability from metal straps buried in backfill is finding diverse mine applications, ranging from rock crusher headwalls to massive slot coal storage facilities. Reinforced Earth (Re/Earth), the system trade name of Reinforced Earth Co., is proving itself 20-50% less expensive than alternative earth embankment structures, and in the case of cast-in-place concrete walls, six to seven times faster to erect. While the majority of applications are in the realm of civil engineering-projects such as retaining walls, bridge abutments, slide buttresses, and containment dikes-a growing proportion is mine related. Of the estimated 120 Reinforced Earth projects that will be completed this year, company president David P. McKittrick expects mining to account for about 20% of the business volume.

The suggestions of the members of the Institute are very much desired by-the Committee on Nominations prior to deciding upon its nominations to fill the places of those officers who retire early in 1917. The Committee must make its final report to the Board of Directors early ill October. The members are, therefore, -asked to send in promptly their suggestions for Directors as well as for Vice-Presidents and President. The Committee hopes to hear from a large number of the members. The officers to be elected at the annual meeting in February, 1917, are: One officer, known as Director and president. Two officers, known as Director and Vice-President. How do you make a mine out of 500 000 kg (1.1 million lb) of uranium oxide contained in a low-grade deposit with high clay content? Confronted with these limited reserves and mineralogical problems at France's St. Pierre du Cantal uranium deposit, engineers adopted a rather unusual mill process to keep capital costs to a minimum. Crushing and grinding were eliminated by using a high pressure monitor to slurry ore directly from stockpiles. After mechanical separation of the high-grade fines from low-grade sand, the sand fraction is washed of clay to increase permeability and then it is heap leached. Fines are sent to agitated vessels for acid leaching, and the pulp from this operation is diluted by pregnant solution from the heap leaching.

The information which is required for' a preliminary feasibility study and the additional information which is required for the final feasibility study on a new mineral deposit are discussed. The preliminary feasibility study is made from very little information and at a minimum cost to the owner. However, the outline for the preliminary report is similar to the one used in the final report. In this manuscript, it is assumed that the results from the preliminary study are favorable and the owner authorizes a final feasibility study by an outside engineering company. The type of organization for completing this final feasibility study is described. The final reports includes all information and data relative to this new mineral deposit. This information is presented so that it may be understood by financial people as well as by technical people.

Exploration targets and results in the mining industry are commonly summarized in terms of tonnage and grade. Business appraisals require, as additional information, the expected profit or loss implied by the physical summary. The early incorporation of knowledge gained through financial analysis computations can provide a means for economically resolving many common exploration and development problems. Examples of such applications from the activities of exploration planning, reconnaissance, land acquisition and develoment planning follow. While prospecting for mineral deposits, geologists are frequently asked what they have found or hope to find. The response is usually descriptive, such as: "50 million tons of 1% copper," and the economic implications are deferred until a capital investment decision is required. At that time a financial analysis integrating the four analysis components-tonnage and average grade above cutoff grade, capital and operating costs, product value, appropriate profit or loss accounting-are completed.

A record 340 senior students with majors in mining and mineral engineering from 21 shcools in the US may be expected to enter a manpower-hungry mineral industry in 1975. While starting salaries may have been the deciding factor in job selection in the past, 1975 graduates will find salaries almost the same in most mining sectors. Meanwhile, the survival prospects of various mineral engineering schools had the usual ups and downs in 1974, but tightening state budgets could still take a toll in reducing the number of schools offering mineral engineering degrees. Two such schools on the endangered list include Montana College of Mineral Science in Butte, Mont., and the College of Mines, University of Idaho, in Moscow, Idaho.

The cyanide process in the United States, notwithstanding numerous failures made under the direction of the owners of the patent-rights, and others, has now passed its experimeiital stage, and can, undoubtedly, be made successful when intelligently applied to suitable material. Much, however, remains to be known as to the exact conditions under which this process is applicable to the treatment of gold-bearing ores. If the owners of the patent-rights in this country have ever scientifically investigated the matter, they have never published any valuable informatioil on the subject. Other parties who are now using the process (often independently of the patentees), have nothing to gain by publishing their experience; and, moreover, many of the chemical reactions described in the text-books refer to the use of solutions of potassium cyanide many times stronger than are used in the metallurgical process.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, has established a computer-implemented coalbed methane data base containing data representing over 2,000 coal samples from approximately 250 coalbeds located in 17 States and one Canadian Province. Space for approximately 130 sample characteristics is reserved for each sample record and is divided for access efficiency into three separate physical files. A software package was written to provide a user-friendly environment in which the three files can be manipulated simultaneously. These files can be used interactively in DATATRIEVE 11, a commercially available sorting, retrieval, and report-writing software package or in any FORTRAN-compatible system for statistical analysis. The data base has been established for coalbed methane research in response to the health and safety needs of the mining industry. Possible applications of the data base include mine planning related to the occurrence of gas, as well as delineating areas of resource recovery and utilization.

During the past ten years, the trend on the Mesabi Range has been toward the establishment of integrated operations which mine, concentrate, and pelletize the large reserves of magnetic taconite. However, since the supply of open-pit ores of acceptable quality is by no means inexhaustible, it has been proposed that it be supplemented by developing the magnetic taconites that extend down dip past the economic limits for open-pit methods. In Phase I of a long range study, Pfleider and Yardley1 collected information on the general character of the Mesabi iron formation at depth and proposed that an underground lane-and-pillar mining system be considered to extract those high grade layers where they might exist over a considerably areal extent. An approximate cost estimate was included initially, with the thought of later developing a feasibility study as time permitted.

The four papers making up this symposum have been prepared especially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathematical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismograph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as much as possible of the technical aspests of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. The spatial distribution of the deformation modulii around the CSM/ONWI test facility was determined using an NX version of the CSM cell. Approximately 840 modulus measurements were made in six rings (each ring containing seven holes each 6 m in length) of boreholes. These parallel rings were spaced at 2.4 m intervals along the room. Contour plots of the modulii revealed that the depth of the blast damage zone varied both with perimeter position and distance away from the opening. The maximum depth of disturbance appeared to be of the order of 60 cm. At locations removed from the opening, the variability in modulus was quite high reflecting the presence of joints, faults, shear zones and foliation. A comparison of rock mass modulii (ER) with those obtained from the laboratory testing of core (E), revealed that ER [=] 0.5 E.

ThE distribution of gold is obviously much wider than is Commanly supposed. Resides the usual matrices, vehicles, or associates, such as quartz, pyrite, chalcopyrite, etc., I find it occurring in quite a range of common rocks. For example, at the Rhodes mine, in Gaston County, a body of 9 to 12 feet of decoroposed, light-gray gneiss was worked together with the strings of quartz, and yielded from six to ten dollars to the ton. A mine in Moore County yields its gold mainly from a feldspathic schist. In the famous King's Mountain mine, in Gaston County, the gold is obtained not only from the seams of quartz in a blue, hydromicaceous schist, but a 60-foot ledge of grayish-blue, fine-grained, schistose limestone is quarried out bodily and sent to the stamps. It is gold-bearing throughout. In Montgomery County the singular concretionary, conglomeritic, quartzite schist, which contains Emmons's palceotrochis, is gold-bearing over wide tracts of country. This fact was noticed by Dr. Emmons. But a still more striking and significant fact is, that a large part of the gold of Montgomery, Davidson, and Randolph counties,

In airborne gravity surveys effects of acceleration and irregular movements of the aircraft must be balanced out or overcome. The gradient of vertical gravity is recorded, therefore, by using two masses instead of one. As the amplitude variations are infinitesimal and difficult to measure accurately, at present it is enough to determine whether variation of gradient during flight is positive or negative. The positive portions of the pattern can then be indicated and contoured. Even with these simplifications, the source of energy must be exceptionally stable. General Principles: In the conventional gravi-meter the weight of a standard mass is determined at a number of selected points within the survey area. TENNESSEE Copper Co. operates two ore concentrators, the London and Isabella mill. Copperhill, Tenn. In 1948 and 1949 the small ball mills and rake classifiers in the London concentrator were replaced by one large ball mill and one hydraulic classifier. This new ball mill was designed oversize so that it could be operated at slower than normal speed. The proper operating conditions were established and the results published.1 Later it was found that this mill operated more efficiently with a small ball charge.2 While this London grinding practice was being developed, the Isabella grinding circuit was not changed in any way. It remained a conventional two-stage rod mill-ball mill combination, the rod mill in open circuit and the ball mill in closed circuit with a rake classifier. Study of the data indicated that grinding cost could be lowered by converting to the London practice, but not enough would have been saved to warrant the expense of converting. No plan for improving this grinding operation could be developed.

Since the meeting, the discussion of the " practical value of chemical analyses" has been continued at some length in 'the columns of the Iron Age.

High purity ZrC14 (25 to 200 ppm of metallic impurities) can be readily prepared in simple apparatus by thermal decomposition of alkali chlorozirconate fused salts at 500° to 600°C and at atmospheric pressure. Suggested phase diagrams for the systems NaCI-ZrC14 and KCI-ZrCI, are presented. ALKALI chlorozirconate compositions — anhydrous fused mixtures of ZrCl4, NaC1, and KC1— are manufactured commercially and are used by the magnesium industry to introduce zirconium into magnesium alloys. Zirconium refines the grain size and improves the physical properties of many important magnesium alloys. In the course of working with chlorozirconate compositions of high ZrCl4 content, it was noticed that these salts decomposed progressively itwaswith increasing temperature to yield considerable amounts of a ZrCl4 sublimate of high purity together with a solid chlorozirconate residue. RISSER] There is a tendency among laymen to relegate America's coal industry to Pennsylvania and West Virginia, completely overlooking-or unaware of- the vast reserves, both those developed and those untapped, situated in the 1.4 million square miles between the Appalachians and the Rockies. At the 1965 AIME Annual Meeting, Hubert E. Risser, Principal Mineral Economist of the Illinois State Geological Survey, presented an interesting picture of the wealth of mineral fuels occurring in that area. In his talk entitled "Trends in Mineral Fuels in the Central United States", Mr. Risser underscored the fact that "more than half of the nation's known reserves of each of the three major fuels-oil, gas and coal-lie within the Central area." The highlights of his speech, with emphasis on the coal situation, are excerpted below.
