AMAX Base Metals R&D, Inc. has developed technology for extracting and recovering platinum and palladium from spent automobile exhaust emission control catalyst. Our most promising route is a chloride-based hydrometallurgical flowsheet in which catalyst pellets or crushed monoliths are leached in HC1 with an oxidant at 95°C without agitation. Alumina co-dissolution can be limited by thermal pre-treatment of the catalyst. The leach solutions are treated by one of several precious metals recovery techniques to produce a high grade PGM concentrate. For the new generation of three-way catalytic converters which contain rhodium, an H2S04 preleach could selectively extract much of the rhodium while leaving the platinum and palladium behind. Capital and operating costs will be discussed.

Primary amines are strong collectors of apatite and they can selectively float sedimentary phosphates from calcareous ores. However, secondary and tertiary amines and trimethyl ammonium salts are ineffective. Kerosene reduces the collector requirements became hydrocarbon is co-adsorbed along with the amine on the mineral surface. The heats of reaction of aminium ions with such anions as phosphate, carbonate, and sulfate were measured in a microcalorimeter. They are discmsed in terms of the solubility of the precipitates formed and their relationship with the adsorption mechanism of primary amines on phosphate minerab. Experimental evidence supports a view that primary amines are adsorbed through chemical interaction between the aminium and phosphate ions at the mineral surface.

INTRODUCTION The primary tool which is available to improve the stability of an open pit mine at a given slope angle is control of groundwater pressure. This paper sets out the methods by which water pressure control can be achieved in large mines in different materials. The emphasis of this paper is on large mine slopes because. these slopes exhibit the greatest need for groundwater control, the greatest economic benefit from groundwater control, and the greatest technical challenge in achieving groundwater control. STABILIZATION USING MTER PRESSURE CONTROL Groundwater pressures reduce the stability of slopes in two fundamental ways, as shown schematically in Figure 1. In the example, a horizontal failure surface intersects a vertical joint or weak zone. Water pressure acts: o On the base plane to reduce the normal force on the sliding surface and hence reduce frictional resistance to sliding, and o On the vertical back plane, to create a driving force for the system.

A severely technical article, however well written, can not be an agreeable form of literature. It suffers from the defects of its qualities. One defect is a congestion of language, due to a multiplicity of adjectival nouns. The sentences are packed with words of unpleasing sound, charged with complex ideas, crowding one another so closely that the phraseology moves like an ice-pack in Bering Sea or a log-drive in a river; the undercurrent of meaning may continue to move, but the surface is obstructed. This verbal congestion is made evident by ugly compoundings, many of which are adopted by the technical writer in the mistaken belief that they give directness to his statements. For example: A unanimously approved scheme "A scheme unanimously approved " The continuous temperature record "The continuous record of temperature " To stimulate interest in synthetic plant construction "To stimulate interest in the construction of synthetic plants " In smelters reverberatory-furnace firing with powdered coal has been practised for a decade. Seismic velocity determinations over Precambrian outcrops near Flin Flon, Manitoba, indicate that several different rock types have sufficient velocity contrast to make reflection mapping possible. Stratigraphic and fault contacts between metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks have been mapped at some depth. A mu1ti-fold reflection survey attempted to trace the depth extension of an ore-bearing (Pb-Zn) rhyolite horizon within the metavolcanic rocks. A synthetic seismogram has been produced from a 10,000-ft sonic log and provides means of comparing seismic records with the local geology. From this the optimum frequency spectrum and the maximum resolution of the seismic signals were estimated.

Forecasting demand is an art as well as a science, and much personal judgment is required. National forecasts made for sand and gravel, crushed stone, and/or aggregate may be misleading or unhelpful locally. This is because of significant variation in demand within different geographic and/or political areas in the US, and/or the use of an inadequate data base and forecasting methodology. The best forecasts may be made for local or regional market areas, irrespective of geographic or political boundaries, provided a proper data base is available.1 The Bureau of Mines compiles detailed statistics on commodities sold or used in the construction industries and, therefore, is in an advantageous position to make national aggregate demand forecasts. Definitions of some terms used in this presentation are necessary before proceeding.

FOR several years an investigation has been in progress in the research laboratory of The American Brass Co. to determine the thermal and electrical conductivities of most copper alloys of commercial importance and several of scientific interest. This paper contains such data on the binary alloys of copper with silicon, aluminum, manganese and nickel, and on a large number of ternary or more complex alloys. Some inter-esting general relationships between the thermal and electrical conductivi-ties for all copper alloys at all temperatures are pointed out. The data for the copper-zinc, copper-phosphorus and copper-tin binary systems have already been published1,2 ? except for the electrical conductivity at 200° C., which is given in the appendix of this paper.

This paper is a preliminary report on the occurrence and distribution of economically interesting heavy minerals (kyanite, sillimanite, staurolite, zircon, monazite, ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile) in sands from the sea floor surface of the offshore area, Alabama-Mississippi. Weight percent of heavies derived from the +60 portion of 97 samples is contoured in [Fig. 1]. Five hundred grains from 42 of the heavy mineral separates were identified and sized microscopically; the data were converted to weight percent for each mineral species and are summarized in [Table 1]. Heavy Mineral Distribution In the Gulf, there is a general westward decrease [(Fig. 1)] in maximum abundance of heavies from 2.4% north of Sand Island at the mouth of Mobile Bay to slightly over 1.0% south of Petit Bois Island and a corresponding decrease in the Mississippi Sound from 1.4%, north of Dauphin Island to slightly over 0.25% north of Horn Island. Average concentrations of heavies for different areas are found in Table 1. There is westerly longshore transport in this area; the interaction of the longshore current with discharge from Mobile Bay and disruptions of the current by Sand Island, possibly aided by a shoaling effect, appear to be the cause of the preferential deposition and concentration of heavies (2.4%) north of Sand Island in 10 to 14 ft of water.

THE development in the Gulf Coastal Plain for the year 1923 was entirely devoid of any spectacular feature and was considerably less than that of 1922. No large fields were discovered and the principal advances lay in the extension of the old fields and the finding of a new dome and other possible producing structures, which, however, so far, have given only small wells. While the production of some fields, such as those at Hull and Orange, was materially increased at times by comparatively large wells, the output as a whole shows a marked decrease over that of the preceding year. Generally, the mining costs reported for the large open-pit operations in the United States and South America lie within the range of $0.20 to $0.30 per ton of material moved. (These operations have strip- ping ratios ranging from 1.5 to 4.0.) Productivities for the larger North American properties are in excess of 200 tons of material per man shift, while those for the South American operations are less than 200 tons per man shift. The most significant variations in cost are in the categories of haulage and general mine cost. Haulage costs vary, as expected, according to the mine elevation, pit profile, crusher location, and accessibility of a dump area, and general cost variations depend largely on the overhead cost items included in this category. Drilling and Blasting Practice The majority of open-pit copper mine production drilling is performed by rotary drills. Hole diameter varies from 6 in. to 12 in., with 9-in. holes being most common, and penetration rates vary from 35 ft to 60 ft per hour.

THE casting of steel in large molds brings into play all of the undesirable effects that result inevitably from slow cooling. The origin of the molten metal, whether basic or acid open hearth or electric furnace, has little if anything to do with the phenomena involved. If the quantity of molten metal to be cast in a single mold is large enough, there is very little one can do about it-the metal will cool so slowly that 'nothing one can do, other than to provide as good feeding as practicable from an adequate reservoir of metal in the sink head, will be of any avail. Recently we have had occasion to cast a 108-in. octagon ingot weighing 545,700 lb, necessitating the combining of metal from three 100-ton open-hearth heats. This is one of the largest ingots ever made. The body of the ingot weighed 448,800 lb, which includes a bottom pool of about 7500 lb of metal, and the sink-head weight was 96,900 lb, or about 18 pct of the total weight.

Because of high production demands at San Manuel mine (approximately 40,000 tpd) and the relatively narrow grade range of the orebody, no attempt is made by the company to mine selectively. The caving sequence is laid out to meet the production demands, and proceeds in a manner to induce the least amount of weight on extraction openings. Once an area is undercut, draw control procedures are applied uniformly until the area has been mined to depletion. The orebody, located 50 miles northeast of Tucsoil, Ariz., is a low-grade deposit of chalcopyrite disseminated throughout a structurally weak, highly fractured, strongly altered granitic host rock over- lain by several hundred feet of relatively competent andesitic conglomerate. When undercut, the granite ore caves readily into fragments which usually pass through the grizzly without either excessive breaking or an undue amount of secondary blasting.

In my paper on "The Lixiviation of Silver-Ores by the Russell Process at Aspen, Colorado" (page 137 of the present volume), attention was called to the decrease in "chlorination " during the washing of the roasted ore with water, to remove soluble salts, before leaching with hyposulphite and Russell solutions. This decrease in " chlorination," which is due to conversion of the silver chloride to some other form not soluble in hyposulphite solutions, and which, for the sake of brevity, will be termed the "going-back" of chlorination, has been a serious obstacle to the successful operation of several leaching-works, and was at Aspen the only difficulty encountered. I have never seen any explanation of the cause of this failure to extract, in actual practice in the mill, the amount of silver chloride shown by laboratory-leachings to be present in the roasted ore; and the purpose of this paper is to record the conclusions arrived at concerning the cause of the phenomenon, and the data upon which they are based. The average decrease in chlorination by washing with water in the Aspen ores for a period of fourteen months was as follows:

Multiple seam mining and its associated problems are very serious in Southern West Virginia where poor planning or lack of knowledge in seam interaction often results in complete loss of coal properties. Several measures have been proposed to alleviate the interaction problems under various multiple seam conditions, but few of them are specific in terms of mining plan. Two parallel approaches are adopted for this paper. One is field investigation which consists mainly of mine site visits and gathering of data. The other is the two-dimensional finite element simulation of mine workings using the data gathered as input. Two typical cases which represent the past and present multiple seam mining practice in West Virginia were investigated. Much attention is focused on the interaction problems experienced and the important parameters controlling interaction. Several key parameters controlling interaction in multiple seam mining were analyzed. Proper mining plans, by which the interaction problems can be minimized, are proposed for the individual cases after a better understanding of the interaction mechanism was realized through finite element analyses.

Rock deformation and failure taking place around underground openings is usually both accompanied and preceded by the phenomena of rock noise or microseismic activity. These small-scale releases of seismic and acoustic energy can be detected with special geophysical monitoring equipment. Use of this equipment allows one to look inside a rock mass to determine how an opening is behaving under the applied loading system. Microseismic equipment and monitoring techniques are briefly reviewed, and use of the microseismic method as an engineering tool in monitoring rock structure stability is illustrated by case histories. Examples cited range from evaluating roof stability using single-channel portable equipment, to rock burst monitoring using sophisticated computer controlled, multichannel monitoring systems.

A 2-year moratorium on accreditation of curricula bearing new designations has been declared by Engineers' Council for Professional Development at its Executive Committee meeting on July 29, 1952. Reason: a more definitive description of what the contents of a curriculum should include to be appropriately designated as "engineering" is needed. This action was brought on by the Committee of Evaluation of the American Society of Engineering Education which had become perturbed over the extension of the name "engineering" to numerous fringe curricula. The 2-year period will permit time for the Committee on Evaluation to study the question and make a recommendation for further action by ECPD. ECPD action also provided that the following curricula should only be given provisional accreditation for one year upon either inspection or reinspection; such provisional accreditation to be extended annually for not more than two successive years pending the report: Engineering Physics, Engineering Mechanics, Geological Engineering, Geophysical Engineering, and Textile Engineering. There are 22 such curricula now accredited.

Mother Earth has had a long life extending over two billion years, during which time she has changed from a mass of incandescent gases to her present form, exhibiting a density stratification from the extremely tenuous gases of the stratosphere to the heavy central nickeliron core. Man is now mining all the principal divisions of Mother Earth except the centrosphere. Nitrogen, oxygen, neon, and other rarer gases are being recovered from the air; magnesium, bromium, potash, borates, and other salts from lakes and seas; brines, medicinal mineral waters, and great quantities of water for domestic and industrial uses from surface and subsurface reservoirs; and, from the rocky crust, many minerals and fuels for our present industrial civilization as well as plants and animals for food and shelter. Productivity of soil is influenced both positively and negatively by man. There is some cause to bewail what may be considered a wasteful influence of men on soil. The general situation is bad in spots but not hopeless. The passing of large areas of fertile land in some areas is merely to be noted and not to be mourned. These lands could not have been used without decrease in their fertility. The productivity factor is affected by human activities. Many soils in the eastern and southern states are far richer and more productive now than they were at any previous time. Arctic soils are not productive

Arthur Launcelot Collins was born at Truro in Cornmall, England, July 8, 1868. His father, J. H. Collins, is well kuown as an engineer, and his books have been widely read in this country: Arthur was the third son. Three of his brothers are engaged, as is his father, in the profession of mining engineering. His education, gained partly at St. Austell, partly at Falmouth, and partly at Nuttall's Collegiate School in Truro, England, was supervised by his father, who was then Lecturer on the Mining Sciences to the Miners' Association of Cornwall and Devon. In 1881, J. H. Collins went to Rio Tinto, in Spain, as chief chemist and metallurgist, and it was there that Arthur began his practical work in the laboratory and continued his studies in chenlistry and mineralogy. To the latter science he was deeply attached; and he never lost an opportunity of adding to his cabinet of minerals, of which he was an ardent collector. In 1883, he became assayer and general assistant to Mr. Nicol, Manager of the Peña del Hierro copper-mines, ncar Rio Tinto. The fundamentals of blasting involve both the properties of explosives and of the rock being blasted. Four of the most important explosive properties appear to be energy density, bulk density, rate of energy release and the pressure- time history of the gases produced. Important rock properties are density and porosity, strength, and energy absorption including the effective moduli of elasticity. Rock structure also has a marked effect on its properties: for example, joints, bedding, and fracture alteration. Several mechanisms enter into rock fragmentation by blasting. These include slabbing, radial fracturing, crushing and bursting by the gas bubble. All of these factors are closely related to properties of both explosives and rock. Slabbing depends upon the first generated stress wave, whose shape and magnitude are a result of the pressure generated by the explosive, its time history and the resultant response of the rock, including its ability to sustain the stress wave. Actual slabbing, in turn, is a function of the magnitude and shape of the pressure pulse and the tensile strength of rock. Further fragmentation depends to a great extent upon the amount of gas in the bubble and its energy and pressure.
