There is not a coal preparation engineer alive who would equip his newest and most modern preparation plant with all new and untried pieces of equipment. He may install a few such pieces in which he has great confidence, but he will also spend much time assuring himself that everything else in the plant has been subjected to the test of time. He may arrange these units in a unique manner, but in general, they must have proven themselves elsewhere before he will approve them for his plant. A modern coal preparation plant contains only a few items of processing equipment, the remaining items being devices for materials handling. Consequently, pure automation is almost impossible. Although the main aim of automation is conservation of manpower, it generally results in uniformity of product, lower maintenance costs, and the many intangibles that make a better plant.

Photogrammetrists are studying with new interest the problems of mine mapping and mining engineers are beginning to see what photogrammetry can do for them. Administrators in a number of European and U. S. mines have tried photogram- metric methods and are finding that better maps and data, needed for mine development, can be produced with savings of time, men, and money. In addition to wide use in small scale mapping projects, photogrammetric methods are now used for producing large scale plans and maps in German coal and lignite mines, in some U. S. open pit mines, to inventory TVA coal stock piles, and to compute highway excavation volumes. In each case surveying and map compilation has been made more efficient and accurate by photogrammetry and at significant savings over ground methods.

The library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A. M. to 10 P. M. except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

This discussion is restricted to a very specific application of the cyclone - its use as a hydro-cyclone in the cleaning of fine coal. It is hoped that the development of the present data will assist in the further elucidation of existing qualitative models, and also in an enhanced application of the hydrocyclone and provide a base for further research. Discussed are the mechanisms of gravity separation in hydro-cyclones, test procedures, experimental observations, and industrial applications from these studies. Within the general area of unit operations, a considerable effort has been expended in theoretical and empirical research associated with cyclone operations. The motivation involves the industrial requirement for devices and techniques to manipulate small particles at low operating costs, a situation required in coal preparation. There are good reasons why the cyclone helps to satisfy this demand, because it combines operational simplicity (no moving parts) with versatility and high throughput capacity per unit area. The cyclone is one of the most widely applied tools in the process technologies. There are areas for potential cyclone application which have been only meagerly explored or not considered at all. This discussion is restricted to a very specific application of the cyclone - its use as a hydrocyclone in the cleaning of fine coal. It represents an initial presentation of a more comprehensive report. Coal preparation can appropriately claim the hydrocyclone since most of its predominant industrial uses have originated in this area and have spread into other applications, including the broad field of ore dressing, the petroleum industry, chemical processing, nuclear engineering and food technology. There is one operational principle common in all cyclones: A fluid is tangentially introduced into a cylindrical or conical container under pressure. A predominantly irrotational flow field1 is established within the cyclone (Fig. 1). The uniqueness of this flow is indicated by the variation in tangential velocity across the cyclone radius, which reaches a maximum a short distance from the center and decays toward the cyclone wall. In contrast, the tangential velocity in a centrifuge increases uniformly toward the wall. Usually two products are discharged from the cyclone. They differ in that one discharge consists predominantly of that portion of the feed fluid which moves along the wall axially away from the feed inlet, while the other consists predominantly of fluid spiralling along the central regions of the cyclone, in an axial direction opposite to that of the wall current. Fig. 2 indicates these discharge points schematically. The latter product may be termed the vortex-product, since it is discharged with the central vortex-current. In the case of conical cyclones, the former product may be referred to as the apex-product. Although the names "over- and underflow" are widely used, many cyclones are operated from extreme angular positions thus the proposed terms are less ambiguous. The cyclone feed fluid can be laden with solid particles or nonmiscible fluid drops. Such a feed component is discharged from the cyclone, after some residence time, into the one or the other product. Yet, the orifice through which a particle will leave the cyclone is dependent upon a number of factors. These factors, in a statistical sense, determine the path of the particle within the cyclone. Thus, different separation phenomena are possible and different process results attainable by the controllable variation of the particle path. It is then, to attain a fuller understanding of this particle path, to which this study is ultimately directed. It is anticipated that the detailed study of the data being developed will allow further elucidation of existing qualitative models. However, the development of a quantitative description of cyclone operation in terms of a mechanism is not currently feasible. The flow conditions in a cyclone are not fully understood even for a pure fluid, without the added complexity of the inclusion of multiple size-density particles. It is hoped that the development of the present data will also assist in an enhanced application of the hydro-cyclone and provide a base for further research. The experimental apparatus, and the technique. are the same as that previously reported.' - In the determination of the solubility of methane in water, only two phases were present at temperatures between 100 and 340°F. these being the vapor phase and the water-rich. liquid phase. The determinations involved the agitation of methane and water in an equilibrium cell. withdrawal of a sample from the liquid phase, and the analysis of the sample. The experimental value; determined in this manner are pre9ented in Table I and in Fig. 1. Since experimental and analytical techniques have improved since the initial experiments with this equipment, it was decided to repeat the 77°F isotherm determinations.' Statistical techniques are being widely used in geochemical exploration to answer questions involving sample spacing, analytical and sampling errors, thresholds, data smoothing, and optimum combination of several elements into one measure of favorability. The applications of sampling theory, mean and standard deviation, trend surfaces, moving averages, factor analysis, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, and regression analysis to these questions are discussed with examples. Although the techniques are very useful as means of handling large amounts of data, they require as much geological and geochemical judgment as any other approach to data interpretation.

THE Presidio mine of The American Metal Co. is situated in the "Big Bend" region, some 45 miles over state highway south of Marfa, a station on the Southern Pacific R.R. It lies 20 miles by road north of the Mexican border, in semidesert surroundings typical of this general section of the United States and the adjoining part of Mexico. All supplies are hauled in by truck from Marfa under contract. The concentrates and precipitates produced by the mill are carried by the same trucks to Marfa, from whence they are shipped, respectively, to the El Paso and Selby plants.

CENTRIFUGAL force has been utilized for the dewatering of fine coal for over 50 years by means of machines commonly called centrifugal dryers. In any centrifuge the coal and water are subjected to a spinning action which usually increases in intensity as the coal progresses through the machine. This spinning action, or the centrifugal force that it induces, tears water away from coal particles and produces a dewatered coal. The effectiveness of the dewatering action for any particular machine is governed by the size-consist of the coal and the centrifugal force imparted to the water on the coal.

SOLUBLE silver salts are effective activators for flotation of sphalerite with potassium ethyl xanthate as collector.' Since sphalerite takes up large quantities of silver ions rapidly," investigation of this system appeared fruitful for studying the mechanism of sphalerite activation and deactivation. Experimental data presented here comprise studies of the mechanism and rates of activation and deactivation of sphalerite with silver and cyanide ions. A 20-lb sample of sphalerite from Ottawa County, Oklahoma, was handpicked, crushed, screened, hydrosized to produce a 65/100-mesh fraction, and purified by electrostatic separation. The sphalerite was then leached with benzene and absolute ethyl alcohol to remove possible organic contaminants and with 0.1 M NaCN to remove any copper that might have been picked up during screening. The benzene had been specially purified by grinding with fine sphalerite for 12 hr to remove trace impurities that might have had a specific affinity for sphalerite. Finally, the mineral was washed, dried in flowing nitrogen, and stored in large ground-glass stoppered weighing bottles under a small nitrogen pressure.

IT is a well-known fact that the solubility of zinc compounds decreases when these compounds are roasted in contact with iron compounds, but descriptions of tests to quantitatively express the fact have not appeared in the literature. Possibly such an expression cannot be uniformly and exactly duplicated by different operators because of the variation in the personal equation. In a general way, however, the reactions between zinc compounds and iron compounds under roasting conditions will show a certain trend with changing conditions and the approximate quantitative expression of this trend appears reasonably well established by experimental work conducted for this purpose.

From time to time since the initial installation of an experimental flotation section in 1940, Permanente Cement Co. has made efforts to beneficiate the low-grade limestone fraction which occurs in its deposits at Permanente, Calif. The encouraging results outlined in this article are the result of Permanente's latest effort. THE PERMANENTE LIMESTONE AND THE REASON FOR ITS BENEFICIATION The Permanente deposit is a sheet of Calera limestone over 700 ft thick lying within the Franciscan sediments of the San Francisco peninsula. Limestone suitable for cement manufacture underlies, overlies, and is interbedded with low-grade limestone and chert. Andesite intrusions are found as a secondary gangue. This paper presents the development and application of a novel scaling technique that, when used with a streamline model, causes a "bundle" of one-dimensional (1-D) problems to reduce to a single 1-D calculation. The 1-D bundle is the streamline representation of a two-dimensional (2-D) problem. The 1-D calculation accounts for chemical-rock interactions and the streamline model for areal sweep. The scaling technique significantly reduces computation time, is readily modified to desktop calculations, and can be applied to both absorbing and reacting species. The following paper deals with technical aspects of terminal facilities for western coal pipelines. The information is taken from the Ohio and Black Mesa pipelines and the proposed one in Wyoming. This paper first discusses the feed terminal, the product that it must produce, and the reasons for coal cleaning. Then in the delivery terminal section, the various methods of dewatering the coal and some recent innovative ideas on bunkering the dewatered product and storing the dewatered coal in large outdoor piles are discussed.

The recently completed liquid sulfur dioxide plant at American Smelting and Refining Co.'s Tacoma copper smelter in Washington last April is one step by the firm to meet ambient air quality standards in the vicinities of its three US copper smelters. At a capital cost of $18.5 million, the liquid SO2 plant will work together with an existing sulfuric acid plant to treat all gases generated by the copper converters. Designed to handle up to 45,000 cfm of converter gas utilizing the Dimethylaniline (DMA) process, this plant is expected to recover about 51% of the total smelter input.
