At the beginning of a Henry M. Howe lecture it seems fitting to refer to Howe's great contributions to steel metallurgy, and particularly to the literature thereof. Most of my predecessors in this role have been able, from their association with him, to give direct testimony as to his great services; but although connected with him for years in a business way, I am less familiar with what might be called his academic side, except as it is embodied in his utterances, written and oral. Howe was adept in his genial way in extracting information in any line which, at the time, was of interest to him. In a technical lecture one expects as a rule new knowledge-—something about recent advances relating to the subject. On this occasion, however, I will ask you to go back with me to the primary department of steel lore, as the title of my lecture shows, to review the more fundamental features in that field for the purpose of seeking some gaps which we can fill and so give the subject renewed interest. In thus going back one must inevitably repeat many familiar facts, but that seems to be necessary in order to reach a clear understanding of the unrecorded matters. The full interpretation of a steel analysis is at present unattainable, though much progress toward that end has been made. The ultimate analysis, giving the percentages of the five commonly determined elements, does indeed usually give a fair idea of what the steel is, and is ordinarily enough, with knowledge of its history and physical condition, to enable it to be assigned to some purpose or use for which it is reasonably suitable. Rut discrepancies arise. Every maker and every User of steel knows, from at least occasional examples in his own experience, that the ultimate analysis is insufficient by itself to enable one to tell positively, from its interpretation, either the mechanical properties of the steel or its adaptability to the purpose for which it was made. Further, if, while having the specified composition, it is abnormal or unsatisfactory, why it is so. Good, bad and indifferent steels may have substantially the same ultimate analysis.

During an investigation in which the solubility relations of the phases in Muntz metal (60 per cent. copper, 40 per cent. zinc) were under study, certain phenomena that had no immediate connection with the main problem were observed, which were thought sufficiently interesting to study further. Because of lack of time, only a preliminary survey was made of two of these; namely, the cleavage structure developed under certain conditions in a 60:40 brass and abnormal grain growth in this alloy. Cleavage Structure in Heat-treated Muntz Metal Carpenter noted many years ago that cold-working a brass of the Muntz metal type, which had been quenched previously from within the beta field, results in a partial breakdown of the supersaturated beta solution and the precipitation of the solute (the alpha solution) in the cleavage planes of the beta grains. This manner of rejection of a solute from a metastable solid solution is not peculiar to this particular alloy, for among others, it occurs in the cold-working of certain austenitic steels; for example, the austenitic nickel steels. In these ferrous alloys, cold deformation produces a partial decornposition of the austenite, with the formation of martensitic "needles" and zigzags in the austenitic poly-hedra. It is interesting to note that while the two solid solutions— austenite and quenched Muntz metal— are metastable and in their mode of decomposition behave quite alike when deformed in the cold, the metastability of each results from a different cause; viz., that of the austenite from the fact that it is a supercooled solution (its solvent. gamma iron, at ordinary temperatures is below its normal stable range whereas the metastability of the quenched Muntz metal is the result of supersaturation. When a 60:40 brass is quenched from above 800" C.—that is, from within the field where the beta phase alone is stable—this solution is retained practically intact and the alloy so cooled is found to consist almost entirely of polyhedra of this solution with only a little alpha present ordinarily at the boundaries of the beta grains—the result of a slight

Certain American operators bclieve that desulphurizing in the ladle offers a means of increasing blast-furnace and open-hearth yields with the possibility of improvements in quality of the steel. In fact, several producers have experimented with practically all of the known desulphurizing agents, including both standard grades of the alkalies and special preparations that have been offered from time to time during the past several years. Some of these are regularly being used today in large-scale commercial operations, with good results. Also, it is the practice to treat off-sulphur casts in the blast-furnace ladle at a number of plants. It is not known, however, that anyone in the steel industry (American) has ever adequately equipped a plant for desulphurizing blast-furnace metal in an efficient manner as regular operating practice. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the importance of correct equipment and proper handling for obtaining uniform and efficient results. As will be shown, at the temperature of molten iron the alkalies are instantly neutralized by any free slag present, dissipating their desulphurizing value. Entrained silicates are rapidly washed out of the metal bath by the highly basic soda slags and will be satisfied ahead of desulphurizing reactions with FeS. More or less of the reagent will always be used up through reactions with the refractory lining. Desulphuriza-tion will be limited to the action of the free alkali then remaining in the slag. Causes for the erratic results generally found with desulphurizing tests in blast-furnace transfer ladles would include, among other things, variations in the quantity of furnace slag coming down with the metal, and differences in the percentage of kish and entrained silicates in the different casts. As the alkalies instantly unite with any free slags or silicates present, these, with any kish coming off, both dilute the reagent and reduce the surface contact between the slag and metal, thereby retarding the desulphurizing reactions.

The continuous process of lead refining as at present operated at the Port Piric plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Ltd. was a development from investigations conducted in connection with the ordinary Parkes desilverizing process. It is not proposed here to discuss the theoretical considerations involved in continuous desilverizing because this aspect has already been dealt with in previous publications.1 Continuous Softening Process For economical desilverization of lead bullion, the bullion must first be subjected to refining processes for the removal of such impurities as copper, sulphur, arsenic, antimony and tin. This refining is effected by first drossing to remove copper and sulphur and then preferentially oxidizing the arsenic, antimony and tin from the bullion in the softening process. The theoretical basis of the continuous softening process is illustrated by the portion of the Pb-Sb-O ternary equilibrium diagram shown in Fig. 1. Under conditions of complete liquefaction, metal of the composition of softened bullion is in equilibrium with an oxide slag containing about 9 per cent antimony. In practice, of course, arsenic also is always present, and while the 0Pb-Sb-As-O quaternary system has not been worked out in detail, it has been found that in softening drossed smelter bullion of the composition produced at Port Pirie, arsenic is always reduced to 0.001 per cent or less when the antimony in the bullion is reduced to a satisfactory figure. In the operation of the continuous softening process, a two-phase system of a bullion low in arsenic and antimony and an oxide slag relatively high in those components exists in equilibrium. Single aluminum crystals were subjected to creep in simple shear on the (111) planes in the slip direction. The activation energies for creep were calculated from the effect of small abrupt changes in temperature on the creep rate just before and immediately following the temperature change. The results definitely establish the fact that creep of single aluminum crystals occurs by-three unique processes, characterized by thethree distinct and isolatable activation energies: The 35,-500-cal-per-mole activation energy obtained at the highest temperatures was ascribed to a dislocativationtion climb process; the 28,000-cal-per-mole activation-energy process, occurring over the intermediate-temperature range was attributed to a cross-slip mechanism; and it was suggested thot the 3400-cal-per-mole process observed below 400°K may be the Peierls energy. THE most pertinent question regarding the phenomenon of creep in crystalline materials is concerned with the identity of the crystallographic mechanisms of deformation that control the creep rate. For many years slight progress was made in uncovering the basic mechanisms for creep. Over the past 10 years, however, two parallel lines of investigations have contributed to a more definitive understanding of the processes involved in creep. IN reverberatory smelting, fuel is the chief item of expense, as it commonly is in processes using large percentages of it. Hence the most suitable supply is eagerly sought; that is, the supply which, in the end, yields the greatest net profit. The better grades are not infrequently bought, even at an advanced price, because they are apt to be decidedly more economical. High price, of itself, however, is no merit, for freight is generally the largest part of the cost of fuel, and the nearby supply may yield as high efficiency as that from a greater distance. If a poorer grade is reasonably good, and if its cost is low enough to more than offset the decreased technical efficiency, it is of course the more suitable. Any smelting, operation depends for both efficiency and economy on raising the furnace atmosphere considerably above the "critical" temperature; that is, above the temperature at which smelting is completed. If this temperature is not exceeded, smelting stops, no matter how much coal is burned; and the real value of a fuel depends on the number of degrees that the temperature is continuously kept above this point. For example, if one fuel maintains 2,500° F. and another only 2,100° F., while the "critical" temperature is 2,000° F., the first is worth at least five times as much as the second, although the increase above atmospheric temperature is only one-fifth more in one case than in the other. This "margin of temperature" above the smelting point is much more significant than the total number of heat units developed from the fuel. The case is parallel to that of water flowing from a pipe. The reservoir may contain a billion gallons of water; but, even though the fluid has come to the nozzle, not a drop will run out, where it can be of practical use, unless the level in the reservoir is higher than the nozzle; and the speed and volume of flow depend on how much higher the level is in the reservoir than at this point. If the temperature inn a furnace is not above the critical level there will be no slag to flow over the skimming plate, even though there are enough heat units to bring an unlimited quantity of charge up to the point of slag formation; and just as the value of a water supply for the purpose of putting out a fire depends largely on the effective head, so the difficulties of furnace management

The large increase in the wages of mine workers makes it imperative that all factors tending to limit production per miner be eliminated, if possible. The trolley and storage-battery locomotive, mining machine, hoisting engine, mining system, etc., have increased the possible output per man. But this output is still limited by the capacity of the hoisting engine and cable and by the size of the mine car. The superiority of skip hoisting in metal mining is shown by its almost universal adoption. By varying the size of skip and the rope speed, any desired tonnage can be secured and, since frequently only one kind of material is handled and breakage is unimportant, the loading of the skips can be easily and cheaply effected from bins into which the cars are dumped. The cars may then be designed to fit the conditions in the mine instead of being a compromise between hoisting and mining conditions, very likely suiting neither. In coal mines, the usual practice has been to hoist the car to the surface, either on platform or self-dumping cages. Of late years the number of skip-hoisting plants in coal mines has been rapidly increasing, but there is more or less inertia to overcome in establishing so radical a change in practice; also the earlier skip operations were not uniformly successful. As a result, it became evident that metal-mining practice would require radical modification before skip hoisting could be successfully used in coal mining. Objections to Skip Hoisting Breakage Except where coal is used for coking, or for other purposes whcre breakage is unimportant, breakage of the coal is vitally important all the way from the face to the railroad car. The average selling price is seriously reduced when the percentage of screenings is increased. Following metal-mining practice exactly, the coal would be dumped into a deep pocket, cut off into a skip load by a measuring hopper or other means, dumped into a deep, narrow skip, and dropped into a bin at the top, all of which would contribute to excessive breakage.

THE subject of this chapter is the application of the dislocation theory to two problems of physical metallurgy where the theory has been able to give definite predictions that subsequently have been verified by experimental observations. Much of the history of dislocation theory has consisted of the explanation of already established results on the basis of ad hoc assumptions. Scattered bits of fundamental theory were formulated as needed-in particular explanations. The result had the appearance of a hodgepodge of ingenious ideas and exciting but possibly artificial speculations. The review article by Koehler and Seitz in this volume gives an excellent picture of the breadth, diversity, and flexibility that have made dislocation theory attractive to speculative theorists, although occasionally bewildering to others. Since 1950, there have been two developments, which have helped to establish dislocation theory, on the one hand, as a systematic coherent body of theory and, on the other, as a means of making predictions that can be tested experimentally and thereby guide experiment into more fruitful channels. The first and easier of these developments has been the systematic derivation of the classes and properties of dislocations from fundamental crystallographic concepts. As originally built, the plant of the American Zinc and Chemical Co. at Langeloth, Pennsylvania, was based upon the Joplin and Wisconsin fields as primary sources of zinc ores, the ores being the then normal jig and table concentrates. Construction incorporated standard Matthies-sen and Hegeler kilns without regenerators. With the development of differential flotation, zinc concentrates produced by that process became the basis of operation. These concentrates were very fine, upwards of 90 per cent passing a 300-mesh screen, and had a comparatively low fusing point with marked caking and crusting characteristics. Difficulties and losses quickly developed. In roasting, the ore went through a decidedly fluid state, and spills became serious. Caking and crusting on hearths was severe and dust losses throughout became intolerable. Acid recoveries dropped from the normal ton-for-ton level to 0.85 tons per ton of ore, and choking of Glover towers and acid lines became a problem. In 1926 and 1927 a two-unit sintering plant was built and placed in operation in accordance with the Baelen process for finishing desulphuri-zation with admixture of carbon. This had its beneficial effect in smelting, but the other problems remained. The problem presented was the roasting of Pecos flotation concentrates at the rate of 200 tons daily to a sulphur content suitable for finishing in the sintering plant. Specifications had to be governed by the existing acid plant of four chamber sets built in units of two, rather widely separated, and the sintering plant built in the space between the existing pairs of kilns, of which there was one on the center line of each of the four chamber sets. The problem contained elements of pioneering and experimentation. A thermal analysis and heat balance clearly demonstrated a possibility of accomplishing autogenous roasting, well worth the attempt, because of high fuel costs and resultant economies in operation of the acid plant due to decreased gas volumes and a consequent release of capacity for increasing acid production, a problem also faced.

THE mines of The Tennessee Copper Co. are in the Ducktown Basin, in southeastern Tennessee. The ore is a heavy sulphide consisting principally of chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite and in places running as high as 05 per cent sulphur and iron. Operating mines are the Burra Burra and Eureka. Development of the Boyd ore body was started in 1940. Late in 1939 the decision was made to change from fuse and cap to all electric blasting and at the same time electric cap lamps were installed to replace carbide. These changes were made to improve the safety and working conditions in the mines. Both the Bureau of Mines and explosives manufacturers recommended electric blasting as a safety measure. Until that time, electric blasting had been used only for shaft sinking and in places where it was absolutely essential for safety. Very few men had had experience in this type of blasting, as the places where it was required were those that also required direct supervision. It was necessary for the mining staff to work out methods, procedure, and equipment to he used. In this they were ably assisted by representatives of the explosives manufacturers. Many mistakes were made and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the original plan and installation, show the major difficulties encountered, the remedies applied, and present the practices now being followed. Comparison of costs of the two methods will also be discussed. About six months were required to make the change and eliminate fuse and cap blasting entirely. The first electric blasting stations were installed in November 1939 and the last fuse was taken underground in May 1940. A very unusual condition forced the use of fuse for a short time in one heading after May, but that will be discussed later. ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT AND INSTALLATION A power line is generally recommended as a source of current where permanent blasting stations are used. The plan worked out for electric blasting was to tap 220-volt alternating-current lines when they were available and use 250-volt direct current from the trolley wire at all other places. A blasting machine would he available at each shaft for places where there were no regular blasting stations and could he used if a regular station should fail. The equipment decided on was No. 16 duplex reinforced lamp cord for lines to within about 50 ft. of the working place and No. 20 lead wire from that point to the shots. An open double-pole, double-throw switch with slate base was put in the circuit, so connected that the down position would close the line to the shots and the up position would connect it to the line from the power contactor. (written discussion).-The basic requirement in the electrostatic process of electrical precipitation is that gases containing solid particles in suspension are forced to pass through an electrical field consisting of an insulated high-potential wire, or other type of discharge member, and a grounded plate, or other, type .of collecting member. Commercial. operation and efficiency of precipitation are secured by electrical and structural arrangements to provide the maximum value of the variable factors modifying the degree of precipitation. That is to say: 1. A unidirectional flow, of high-potential current is vastly more effective in precipitation than a high potential alternating-current flow.

The following paper, submitted by the Russian petroleum authorities, was secured through the courtesy of G. V. Ackerman, Vice President of Amtorg Trading Corporation, and N. V. Vannikoff, Representative in the U.S.A. of the United Oil and Gas Industries of the U.S.S.R. It gives an excellent view of the Russian petroleum industry as seen through Russian eyes. Noteworthy is the tremendous area over which the Russians are searching for petroleum, for this paper refers to such far-flung areas as the Arctic Tamir Peninsula, Kamchatka and Sakhalin on the Pacific, Lake Baikal in Central Siberia, the great new discovery at Neftadag in the plains of West Turkestan, and the oil of the Ferghana oasis, where the derricks look out over to the mosques of Kokand. Of interest also is the new pipe line to supply the industrial centers of Ukraine grouped around the great hydroelectric plant built at Dneprotroy on the falls of the Dnieper. The technical achievements have been noteworthy and we must pause to consider the scope of the undertakings being carried forward. Russia is at the worst a good second to the United States in petroleum reserves and for a long time to come will be a most important factor in the petroleum markets of the world. Her story should be of interest to everyone in the industry. The First Five Year Plan The first Five Year Plan, covering the period 1928-29 to 1932, accomplished the task of transforming the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from an agricultural, backward land into a powerful independent industrial country, with an advanced technological foundation of its own for finally achieving the social reconstruction of the entire national economy. Along with the gigantic forward 'strides in industry and transportation, radical changes took place in agriculture. The creation of more than 5000 great state farms and of more than 200,000 collective farms serviced by a widespread network of machine-tractor stations has brought the U.S.S.R. to the fore as the largest agricultural country in the world. Imports of tractors and other agricultural machinery in the initial years of the Five Year Plan and the intensive output of this equipment by the great plants of the U.S.S.R. in the latter years of the plan have brought about the mechanization of agriculture in the Soviet Union. Data of a known statistical quality has been successfully used in a system of conventional fluid mechanics equations essentially free of empirical "conformance factors to prediet early detailed field 03 in a reservoir where gravity drainage is important and oil and rock properties vary con. siderably. The system is useful where comparative recovery predictions for one or more cases of natural depletion and gas cap pressure maintenance are needed and the reservoir is not too heterogeneous. INTRODUCTION Many authors, have examined various facet* of the gravity drainage-gas cap pressure maintenance problem over the last several years. Two of them. Burtchaell and Elkins, have published practical studies. In the case described in the present paper the best development and operating plan for one of the important reservoirs of the Bolivar Coastal Field in Western Venezuela was urgently needed. It was requested that sound comparative economics be presented along with an engineering evaluation of no additional drilling, maximum drilling. several cases of gas pressure maintenance, of water flooding and combination cases. A rapid analysis of the effect on recovery of the range of crude and rock properties indicated that none of the published methods using average properties would yield adequate comparative predictions. This paper covers the predictive system developed to deal with natural depletion and gas cap pressure maintenance. The large amount of data available for this field permitted statistically reliable correlations to be made of most rock and oil properties, and the evident smooth areal variations of these properties encouraged the construction of a lineal mathematical model of material balance and fluid flow equations, which could be manipulated by a modified iterative procedure. The manipulation is much more adaptable to computing machines than manually operated calculators and subsequent studies have been prepared for the IBM Card Program Calculator. A matrix as opposed to linear model has been tentatively worked out by other members of our group to deal with more heterogeneous reservoirs. It is more adaptable to computers such as IBM-701 or the Remington-Rand Univac. In 1950, when the system reported below was developed, no rapid computing machines were available to the author. Their existence and promise encouraged an initial approach by hand. Some details of oil and rock Property correlation are included because there are a surprisingly large number of medium-sized reservoirs in the world that show systematic property variations which are significant for a rigorous analycon. All large reservoirs (over half a billion barrels recovery) with which the author is familiar contain at minimum a significant temperature variation. Using the rock and oil property correlations, past pressure and production, the gas-oil ratio history of the reservoir was computed and found to be in close agreement with field measurements. The future performance under cases of natural depletion, gas injection of 100 MMcf/day, and of 130 MMcf/day, was then computed; a 70 MMcf/day case was also carried far enough to provide data for comparative economics. The 130 MMcf/day case proved to be the most attractive. A 50,000 horsepower gas turbine driven centrifugal compressor plant to take this quantity of adjacent field gas from 30 to 1,950 psia and inject it into the reservoir is under construction. The total cost of the project will exceed 20 million dollars.

In introducing last year's Industrial Minerals Review, Stan Lefond accurately predicted that the 1974- 75 period would be quite difficult and frustrating. Although 1974 demand and prices for most industrial minerals were exceptionally strong, operating costs also rose rapidly-while shortages of supplies and equipment, symptomatic of an overheated economy, occurred from coast to coast. Thus, at the end of 1974 recessionary forces were accelerating-and the minerals industry will soon be facing falling demand as a consequence of sharp declines in auto production, housing, appliances, and other consumer goods. Moreover, when sales weaken, the high-volume, low-prices industrial minerals will incur sharply increased unit costs. To maintain adequate profit margins under these conditions will require cautious and perceptive management.

Lignite Development in North Dakota is a "shotgun wedding" according to former state senator Robert L. Stroup-the unwilling groom (North Dakota) is being led to the altar by the nation's demand for increased coal production. The state's attorney general, Allen I. Olson, reacts to the situation this way: "We have no specific coal policy. We plan to keep the whole matter down to a dull roar and drag our feet until we see how we fit into the national energy picture." But despite a state administration labeled as "cautiously negative" toward resource development, North Dakota has experienced a twofold increase in annual lignite production within the last two years. And within the next four years, three more mine additions will double the state's output again.

Recently the long-chain primary amines have been used extensively for the flotation of silicate minerals. The use of amines to float sulphide minerals has been investigated by several authorsl-5-l8 but most of this work has been done with the short-chain (less than six carbon atoms) primary amine compounds or the more expensive secondary, tertiary and quaternary amines. Perhaps the fact that the long-chain amines are good collectors for the common gangue minerals has led investigators to omit them from consideration as collectors for the selective flotation of metallic sulphides. The work reported in this paper was designed to investigate the use of a typical long-chain amine salt, laurylamine hydro-chloride, as a collector for the flotation of galena-sphalerite ores. The results show that laurylamine hydrochloride (LAmHCl), when used in small amounts, is a good collector for the selective flotation of sphalerite and galena from the common gangue minerals. The differential flotation of sphalerite from galena was not accomplished but the amine flotation of sphalerite after the standard xanthate flotation of galena is possible. The experimental work reported herein is not complete enough to be able to say whether amine flotation of lead-zinc ores would prove superior to xanthate flotation, or whether the method is even applicable to a more complex ore than the one used for this work. However, the apparent reagent costs for the flotation operations described in this paper seem to be less than for xanthate flotation. This fact alone should be sufficient to encourage the millman to investigate the use of these amine reagents, especially as these reagents are available on a commercial scale at a reasonable price. This paper has as its secondary purposes to illustrate how contact-angle measurements have aided in this investigation, and to bring forward some evidence concerning the mechanism of the collecting action of primary amines. Contact-angle Tests The contact-angle measurements were made by the method described by del Giudice6 and used in recent work by Taggart and his collaborators.7-9 The mineral specimens for the contact-angle tests were carefully chosen, to avoid cracks and inclusions of other minerals. All specimens were mounted in "transoptic" plastic mounts and the surfaces were cleaned by polishing with levigated alumina on a cloth-coverkd glass polishing wheel. Distilled water was used on the lap during the polishing and at all subsequent steps in the contact-angle tests. The mounted mineral specimens were handled with glass forceps and special care was exercised to prevent exposure of the clean surface to air or any other source of contamination.

The refractory linings of open-hearth steel furnaces above the bath line are subject to severe wear not only from the heat caused by the combustion of the fuel and the reactions of the bath, but also from the melting action of the gases when not controlled and directed, and from the scouring of the oxides, etc. with which the products of combustion are charged. The framework that encases or binds the furnace is made up primarily of an iron or steel pan in which the furnace proper is built, side and end buckstays, and tie-rods. The expansion and contraction are so great and variable that the bindings may be subjected to severe stresses unless the tie-rods are carefully adjusted in heating up the furnace, but they are most affected by direct heat and usually become deformed from that cause when the lining is worn thin and, sometimes, when sections of the lining fall in and expose some of the framework. A deformed framework displaces the skewback of the roof arch and tends to distort or crush the roof. Bent buckstays deform the front wall, causing the door frames to stand away from the lining so that the gases burn between the lining and the frames, destroying both of them. Frequently the frames are attached to the buckstays; then when the latter bend the frames usually break. Preventing the distortion of the framework and maintaining the economy of the refractories are real factors in the cost of steel making. Nat only does the cost of general repairs and reconstruction add directly to the cost of steel produced, but the time lost in making repairs cuts down the steel production and increases the overhead expense of both the furnace shop and its allied foundry or mills. Many years ago water-cooled equipment applied to iron blast furnaces made it possible to increase greatly not only the size and production of the furnaces but also the life of the lining. It also cut down the loss from frequent repairs. The open-hearth furnace is a much later invention, especially as a commercial factor; for though it dates from the Fred Siemens patent of 1856, much more progress was made in the Bessemer process until the latter eighties and most of the development
