The replacement or reconditioning of oil storage tank bottoms due to external corrosion is an expensive maintenance item to the oil industry. Cathodic protection as a means of mitigating this problem has proved very successful in the past few years. One pipe-line company recently used magnesium anodes to cathodically protect two 55,000 bbl and two 20,000 bbl tanks. The tank bottoms were protected as individual units with considerable factual data being taken on one of the 20,000 bbl tanks. Twelve 60-lb anodes were installed about 2½ ft from the tank on approximately 17-½ft centers around the tank. Previous installations and tests have shown that sufficient protection is provided when the tank-to-soil potential using a copper-copper sulphate half-cell as a reference electrode is — 0.90 volts at the edge of tank. Potential measurements taken a few months after completing the installation indicated that the potentials were higher than were needed for protection. Resistors were then inserted in the individual anode circuits which increased the life of the anode installation and still provided adequate protection for the structure. All connecting pipe lines were then insulated from the tank. This limited the anode current strictly to the tank resulting in a greater degree of protection with a still longer anticipated anode installation life. The total installation cost for this tank was less than $300 which amounts to $20 per year The corrosion of metallic structures in contact with soil or water has been a very serious and costly problem for centuries. The annual loss to our nation's pipelines alone is estimated at $200,000,000. Mitigation of this problem by various methods has been carried on quite successfully for a number of years. An electrical method called cathodic protection has been used with considerable success to control corrosive influences on pipelines, tank bottoms, cable sheathing and other buried metal structures. Corrosion of oil storage tank bottoms has been a serious problem among the oil industries for years. In addition to damage costs and loss of oil, the replacement of one tank alone represents several thousand dollars. A reconditioning program at periodic intervals was instituted by several organizations and found to be a very expensive process. A few years ago two of the pipeline companies installed cathodic protection units at their tank farms.3'4 The average current required for protection of the tank bottoms varied from 0.7 to 1.0 milliampere per square foot. The results indicated that adequate protection was obtained at a cost of approximately 10 pct of the previous reconditioning program. In recent years the constitution of the high-silver aluminum-silver alloys has been extensively investigated. Hansenl has reviewed the literature to 1935. More recently, Obinata and Hagiya,2 Hofmann and Volk,3 Taziri4 and Tishchenko5 have confirmed the general features of the phase diagram in the region around 25 atomic per cent aluminum. In this paper we present the results of high-precision measurements of lattice constants of the silver-rich alpha solid solution in the homogeneous range and the neighboring two-phase regions. These results are used to establish the nature of the solid solution, the identity of directly measured densities with those calculated from lattice constants and the homogeneity limits of the alpha solid solution with respect to three different neighboring phases. A study of the earlier investigations indicated that the last two subjects in particular required new and accurate data. Experimental Procedure Preparation of the Alloys.—The alloys were made from high-purity silver and aluminum. The silver was "Proof Silver," 99.999 per cent pure, supplied by the U. S. Metals Refining Co. The aluminum was 99.97 per cent pure (contained Si, 0.009 per cent; Fe, 0.0016 per cent; Cu, 0.004 per cent) and was supplied by the Aluminum Company of America. The lattice constants of these two materials have been reported by Jette and Foote.6 Weighed amounts of the two metals were placed in alundum crucibles and melted in vacuo in a high-frequency induction furnace. The melts were allowed to cool in the crucible, the ingots thus obtained weighed about 10 grams. These ingots were then filed clean, hamered, again cleaned and given a homogenizing anneal in vacuo of from 6 to 15 days at temperatures ranging from 500" to 695°C. The ingots were air-cooled from the annealing temperature. Lattice-constant Measurements.—Carefully prepared filings for X-ray analysis were sealed into evacuated quartz or Pyrex tubes and annealed for various periods of time at suitable temperatures. The furnaces used were vertical, rapid-quenching furnaces, the samples being quenched by crushing the sample tube under water by means of a heavy plunger. The general X-ray technique has been previously described6 The cameras were of the symmetrical, back-reflection, focussing type. Ka, radiation from a cobait-nickel alloy target was used. The wave-length values were taken from the second edition of Siegbaum's book.7 A correction for the index of refraction was applied and the lattice constants were calculated by the method of Cohen.8, 6 The lattice constants were calculated to a common temperature of 25°C., using the value of the linear expansion coefficient of pure silver as 18.9 X 10-6. THE development of the modern high-speed vibrating screen, together with the increasing availability of long-lasting stainless-steel screen cloth for relatively fine-mesh separations, means that more screen circuits will be used in the future. It seems pertinent therefore to examine a few characteristics of screen-circuit products, and especially the points of difference as compared with products of classifier circuits. The most noticeable change that takes place when substituting screening for classification in a grinding circuit is a substantial drop in the circulating load, owing to the greater ease with which the "fines" leave the circuit. Where circulating loads of 500 to 600 per cent are considered fairly normal in classifier grinding circuits, the grinding circuit equipped with screens for equivalent work will have a circulating load of only 20 to 75 per cent. As a result, the products of screen circuits will show a minimum of overgrinding or sliming as compared with a classifier circuit. The desirability of this characteristic will naturally vary according to the metallurgical requirement in each case. Because screen separations make a sharper division according to particle size, the products of screen circuits can be expected to show greater crowding of particles near the point of separation. These changes in product characteristics are so important that other factors, both in the grinding and concentration processes must be adjusted if the operator is to take full advantage of the increased tonnages and higher efficiencies available to him through the use of the screen circuit. One factor that too often is overlooked when changing to screen circuits is the importance of adjusting the ball-mill or rod-mill charge, to compensate for: (I) increased tonnage of new feed, (2) decreased circulating load, or (3) more granular character of feed. These same factors should also be taken into consideration for their effect on the various types of concentration or flotation equipment that may follow the screen circuit. Over a period of years, this equipment has generally been designed and adjusted to the product of the classifier, therefore it seems obvious that some research on the adjustment and adaptation of concentrating and flotation equipment to screen-circuit products will be most profitable to the operators. To illustrate the points mentioned above, the results from three recent installations follow, with data on the comparative characteristics of screen and classifier circuits. A range of separation from 10 to 48 mesh has been chosen, using two general types of screening equipment and two types of classifiers. The first of the installations of which the results are to be examined is that of an iron-ore installation where eastern magnetite was being concentrated prior to sintering. "The richest hill on earth" had its start as a placer gold camp in 1864. The gold was quickly worked out but then silver was discovered in the copper ores in Butte Hill. After ten years as a silver camp, rich copper ore was found in 1881 and the future of Butte was assured. In the early 1960's, the Anaconda Company began the shift from underground mining at Butte to open pit mining of the enormous, low-grade copper deposit surrounding the old high-grade veins which had been worked for over eighty years. Their first primary crusher was a 66 in. by 84 in. (168 m by 2. 13 m) jaw crusher. The pit was expanded at such a rate, however, that its location became endangered. Additionally, the new Clyde Weed concentrator had been built at Butte; and in 1969 construction of a new gyratory installation was started. The primary crusher at the Clyde Weed concentrator is one of the most unusual primary crushers ever put into operation. At times, the ore from the Berkeley pit contains large amounts of timber, pipe, rails, and so forth left in the ore body from the old underground mining operations; and the crusher installation had to be designed so this tramp material could be readily removed ahead of the crusher. Ore is delivered by 100- and 150-ton trucks to two side-by-side dump pockets, each with a capacity of 400 tons. Originally, a hydraulic grapple was installed on the dividing wall between the dump pockets; but it was found that oversize boulders large enough to block the discharge opening at the bottom of each hopper were rapidly covered with other material, and the grapple was unable to reach and remove the large boulders causing the blockage. In addition, the grapple was located in a quite vulnerable position; and it sustained damage from being struck by rock dumped from the trucks. Oversize boulders are now blasted. Underneath each pocket is a vibrating grizzly feeder with the grizzly bars set at 4 in. (102 mm). These feeder-grizzlies are 84 in. (2. 13 m) wide and 32 .ft (9. 75 m) long, with grizzly sections 16 ft (4. 88 m) long. Approximately 75% of the ore passes through the grizzlies and grizzly oversize then drops onto two parallel 6 ft (1. 83 m) wide picking belts. The belts are 3 in. (76 mm) thick and rest on idlers supported by air- filled rubber shock absorbers. At the side of each picking belt is a hydraulic grapple which is used to remove timbers too large to be removed by hand. At times, four men are used to remove timber and tramp iron. RECENTLY one of the Welsh coal companies, which has an excellent plant of up-to-date ma-chinery both on the surface and underground, operated under modern methods, sent one of its engi-neers to the United States to study actual operations in the mines. He visited several of the most important and best conducted collieries, went back, and reported that the greatest difference between operations in England and in the United States was. the closer con-tact between management and workmen. By manage-ment he meant management all the way through; close cooperation between office management, superintend-ents, foremen, shift-bosses, etc., and the workmen. A visit to some of the coal mines in that country by the writer made this fact rather impressive. The feel-ing on this side of the water that the methods in use in the coal mines in England are not up-to-date was found in many cases to be quite erroneous. Many mines, particularly those with very thin beds, in which profitable operations are doubtful under the best con-ditions, have necessarily had to adhere to old methods instead of making mechanical improvements. The Powell-Duffryn mines, in the center of the South Wales district, are certainly operating successfully, and have planned their business excellently. Sufficient areas of contiguous land have been leased for extended opera-tions. Mine plants are laid out in the valley, for work-ings on both sides, on a reasonable tonnage of 1500 to 3000 tons to each operation. The beds are from 30 to 48 in. thickness, and a 3-ft. seam is considered an ex-cellent thickness of coal; in fact, the miners prefer to work on the thinner beds rather than the thick ones, where they consider it more difficult to control the backs. This company is making use of its fine coal for produc-ing electric power, which is distributed to its own operations, and for use in the communities adjoining. For this purpose methods of cleaning the fine coal are being put into use. Compressed air is generated at the central power plant and is transmitted over long dis-tances to various mines in each valley. A byproduct coke plant uses more of the fine coal and gives further returns from non-commercial coal. The long-wall system applied in sections of limited size is popular in working the small seams, and me-chanical cutting is used, also handling either by shaking chutes or belt conveyors, or a combination of both. In some mines mechanical cutting is not necessary. The backs are so handled that in the softer or somewhat crushed seams hand cutting can be carried on effec-tively.

THE peninsula of Nicoya contains virtually all of the known manganese deposits of Costa Rica. These are south and west of the Tempisque River, which flows across the peninsula near its juncture with the mainland. This peninsula forms the westernmost part of the province of Guanacaste, which is the northern of the two Pacific Coast provinces of Costa Rica. The larger villages are connected by ox-cart roads and trails. The area may be covered on horseback without difficulty except during the rainy season, when rivers are in flood and difficult to ford. This is particularly true of the Rio Seco-Guayjiniquil area, where there are no inhabitants and few open trails through the tropical jungle. Santa Cruz and Sardinal are served by the Taca Airlines, two planes a week from San Jose and Puntarenas. The port of Puntarenas has excellent loading facilities but none are available nearer the manganese districts; there ore must be lightered to vessels standing offshore. PHYSIOGRAPHY In Costa Rica there are three physiographic divisions: (I) the central plateau (Mesa Central), a somewhat dissected lava platform upon which are superimposed volcanic peaks, some of which are still active: (2) the Atlantic low-lands and (3) the Pacific lowlands. The peninsula of Nicoya and the larger part of the province of Guanacaste lie within the Pacific low lands. The term "lowland" indicates relation to the central plateau, as the peninsula of Nicoya is largely mountainous. The mountains of Nicoya form the southern extremity of a range of low hills, which are almost continuous along the Costa Rican coast to the Nicaraguan border. The coast line shows evidence of subsidence. The Gulf of Nicoya obviously is the drowned valley of the Tempisque River. The west coast of Nicoya shows many rocks, shoals, bays, inlets and small islands as evidence of a sea encroachment. The altitude of the manganese deposits ranges from o to 800 ft. Topography is of the mature type of wide valleys and low hills, often with abrupt slopes. The climate is tropical and humid; rainfall of 125 in. falls largely between Sept. I and Jan. I. Vegetation often is very dense, the Rio Seco-Guayjiniquil area being truly tropical jungle, containing many hardwoods. HISTORY AND PRODUCTION The production of manganese ore in Costa Rica apparently dates from the first World War. It reached a peak of about 10,000 tons in the year 1919, then declined rapidly. Evidence of this period of prospecting has rotted away or been swallowed by the jungle. The war now in progress apparently revived the interest in Costa Rican manganese and has encouraged further prospecting. There are several postulations for the mechanism of slime-coating. Incel proposed the electrostatic hypothesis, del Giudice2 suggested the chemical theory; Bankoff3 reported that slime-coating is inhibited whenever the surfaces of the slime particles are ionized sufficiently for Brownian movement to occur, and is facilitated when they are not. These postulations were examined by experiments involving the Burton tube, the cataphoretic cell, and slime-coating. The techniques involved will be described elsewhere in this paper. The electrostatic hypothesis, supported by migration experiments in a Burton tube, was abandoned by del Giudice.2 Experiments of mineral migration in a Burton tube. after the idea of Ince with modification, indicated that this apparatus was inefficient for accurate observation. A cataphoretic cell was constructed. The experimental data, as shown in this paper, enable the correlation and advancing of this hypothesis. Del Giudice's chemical hypothesis considered that slime particles are attached to the galena surfaces by a cement formed as the result of a metathetical reaction between the sulphide and the slime particles. Applying this hypothesis, the calcite slime particles were cemented to the galena surface by the formation of a cementing lead carbonate. In a similar way, lead silicate was considered as the cement of quartz slime coating on galena. Experiments verifying this hypothesis were carried out according to the following procedure: Fresh mineral particles selected from the central part of the broken lumps and examined first under a microscope for ascertaining a clean surface were placed in a small beaker (1.5-in. dia. by 2.5 in. deep) half filled with one kind of slime pulp. The dilution of all slime pulp was 4:I and the particle size of slime was minus 400-mesh. After agitation for 5 min. the specimen was removed by a sharp-end tong and washed gently three times in three separate distilled water baths. It was dried before a small electrical fan and examined immediately under a microscope. A photograph was made of the observation. With reference to the published solubilities,' several of these experiments, which contradict the chemical hypothesis, are listed as following: I. The coating of fluorite slime on the galena surface was light but the coating of galena slime on the fluorite surface was heavy. In a similar way, the coating of quartz slime on the galena was fairly light, but the coating of galena slime on the quartz particle was heavy. According to the chemical hypothesis, using the same constituents and regardless of which is the slime, the density of the coating should be expected to be the same. This, however, as shown above, is not true. Moreover, fluorite (CaF2), having a solubility of 16 mg.4a per liter of water, should not be

Grain-growth and recrystallization characteristics of a commercially pure zirconium prepared by the iodide process are reported. Grain growth from 640° to 800°C was continuous once initiated and obeyed D = kt". Recrystallization of zirconium occurred at temperatures of 450° to 550°C after deformations of 20 and 50 pct. Hardening from partially soluble inclusions prevented determination of the absolute rates of recrystallization, but the relative rates of recrystallization obtained are useful as a guide in fabrication practice. BASIC information needed as a guide in the hot and cold working and annealing of metals includes recrystallization and grain-growth data. A search of the literature revealed no such information for pure zirconium. This is a report of practical grain-growth and recrystallization results obtained for a commercial grade of pure zirconium on a project sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. In this work, isothermal grain-growth curves were obtained at five temperatures from 640" to 800°C inclusively; while recrystallization curves have been determined at 450°, 500°, and 550°C for the metal at the deformation levels of 20 and 50 pct. In addition to the usual variables of temperature, time, and deformation, distribution of the second phase found in all commercial grades of iodide zirconium is also treated as an important factor in these grain-growth and recrystallization studies. In conducting this work, two properties of zirconium were particularly pertinent in dictating experimental conditions. First, since zirconium undergoes a transformation from the a close-packed hexagonal form to the ß body-centered cubic form at 862°C, no recrystallization or grain-growth studies were made above 800°C. Second, because dissolved gases (oxygen, nitrogen and/or hydrogen) increase the hardness and lower the ductility of the solid metal, all annealing treatments in this investigation were carried out in vacuum or in a helium atmosphere. Materials and Methods The zirconium used in this investigation was prepared by the Foote Mineral Co. by deposition from its iodide. A spectrochemical analysis of the metal showed the following composition in weight pct: Hf, 2.1; Mg, 0.012; Fe, 0.035; Si, 0.095; Ti, 0.023; Al, 0.037; Mo, trace; Ni, trace; Cr, trace; Ca, 0.006. Conventional metallographic procedures involving hand polishing on wet metallographic papers, followed by final polishing on fine, levigated alumina on gamal cloth and a medium speed wheel were used throughout this investigation. Grain boundaries were revealed with modified Tucker's etch containing 20 parts glycerine, 2 parts hydrofluoric acid, and one part nitric acid. The experimental work reported herein firas inspired by the publication of a paper by Grange and stewart, in which it was suggested that at low chromium contents the effect of this element on the Ma point was greater than at higher chromium contents, It was argued that, if a small increase of chromium in solution in austenite caused a sharp lowering of the M, point, it might lead to an explanation of occasional unsolved stress cracking of SAE 52100 during heat treatment. Commercial hardening is carried out at temperatures of incomplete solution, leaving carbides available to enrich the austenite during any inadvertent increase in temperature, such enrichment of the austenite in chromium content would lower the M, point nearer room temperature where cracking is more likely to occur. According, it was decided to investigate the effect of chromium, in quantities between o and 2 pet, on the M, point of commercial steels. Fig I summarizes the data available on chromium steels. For purposes of comparison, the M, temperature values were corrected by means of the Grange and Stewart formulas to (I) Hypoeutectoid compositions: 0.50 pct carbon and 0.80 pct manganese (z) Hsereutectoid compos-sition': 1." pet carbon and O.35 pct manganese. Only the steels having compositions reasonably close to these corrected values were included, because large adjustments inevitably introduce increased error such as are experienced in using the formula. The straight lines of Fig I were drawn by the authors. These data obviously do not settle the question Of the effect Of chromium On the Md Oint, particularly at low chromium contents. While it is fairly well established that chromium causes the M, to be lowered when present in quantities of I pet Or more, Grange and Stewart1 have suggested that in small amounts (less than 1 pet) it is more effective in lowering the Ma point, while Klier and Troiano2 have suggested that in small amounts it is less effective in lowering the Ma point. Payson and Savage3 concur with Klier and Troiano and further suggest that the effect is not linear at these concentrations. Rose and Fischer4 report that small amounts of chromium actually raise the Ma point of a 0.20 carbon steel. Material Two series of 35 Ib induction heats were melted for this work, the analyses of which are given in Table I. One series was aimed at 0.50 pct carbon and 0.80 pct manganese with chromium additions in 0,25 pet increments from o to 1.5 pct with a single heat at 2.0 pct Cr. This series was considered necessary because the commercial heat treatment of SAE 52100 does not generally introduce more than about 0.60 pct carbon in solution in the austenite. The high

The uranium-antimony system has been investigated by metal-lographic, therma1, and X-ray methods. There are four intermediate phases present: USbz and U,Sb, which undergo peritectic decomposition at 1355°and 1695OC, respectively, and USb and UPSbs which melt congruently at 1850"and 1800°C, respectively. There is a eutectic between U4Sbs and USb which melts at 1770°C. USb,, UsSb4, and USb are line compounds while U4Sbs has a solubility range of approximately 1.5 at. pct at 1770°C. Single crystal studies of the cmpo,und U.,SbS show it to have a hexagonal unit cell with a, = 9.268A and c, = 6.201b;. The solubility of uranium in liquid antimony increases from 0.1 at. pct at 650°C to 1.5 at. pct at 900°C. The solubility of antimony in a, P, and y uranium is approximately 0.02, 0.1, and 0.05 at. pct respectively. IN nuclear reactors, uranium has been used mainly in the form of solid-fuel elements of the pure-metal or uranium-rich alloys. However, in attempts to overcome some of the difficulties inherent in solid-fueled reactors, reactor concepts hive been proposed in which the fuel would be a liquid metal, such as a solution of uranium in another metal. The liquid-metal fueled reactor (LMFR) designed by the Brook-haven National Laboratory of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission is an example. Fuel for this reactor is a solution of approximately 800 ppm enriched uranium in bismuth.' To design such liquid-fueled reactors, a background of information on the solubility of uranium in various metals is obviously necessary. The present study was undertaken to pro- vide information for such purposes, and in addition, to study the uranium-antimony system as a whole. A preliminary literature search showed that some work had been done previously on uranium-antimony alloys, but no attempts had been made to make a complete study of this system. The solubility of uranium in antimony was studied by Cammack and Bridger' up to 950°C and by Hayes and Gordon up to 900'-C. Their data are plotted in Fig. 1. Ferro, in an X-ray structure study of some uranium-antimony compounds, found USg to be tetragonal with a, = 4.2724 and c, = 8.471A, U3S4 to be b.c.c. with aO = 9.095A and USb to be f.c.c. with a,= 6.191A. Colani reported the compound UsSba; however, work by Ferro and by this Laboratory showed that this compound does not exist. foote' reported several intermediate phases in the uranium-antimony system, but did not identify them. The physical and chemical structure of the oxide films formed on metals and alloys is of interest in our understanding of their protective properties. According to Pilling and Bedworth,¹ if the specific volume of the oxide is equal to or greater than that of the metal, a compact or continuous structure results; if the volume of the oxide is less, a cellular or porous structure forms. With the cellular type of coating the surface layer of oxide offers no impedance to oxidation; at a given temperature the rate of oxidation is quite constant. On the other hand, the compact type of coating acts as an effective barrier to oxygen and the rate of oxidation will follow a parabolic law. The recent work of Gulbransen2 and of Leontis and Rhines3 on the oxidation of magnesium indicates that it is not necessary for the volume of the oxide to be greater than that of the metal in order that the oxidation may follow a parabolic rate law. One exception to the rule of Pilling and Bedworth¹ is noted by Scheil;4 namely, tungsten. At 500° and 700°C long-time oxidations indicate a linear rate law with time. However, Dunn's6 0xidation measurements from 700°to 1000°C indicate that a parabolic rate law is followed. The oxide is mainly yellow WO a with a thin layer of the blue oxide. Preliminary results on the oxidation of tungsten6 in the temperature range 400° to 500°C indicate that the oxidation does proceed according to a parabolic rate law. Irrespective of the actual rate law that tungsten may obey, it is of interest to compare the results obtained on the oxidation of tungsten in the thin film region with those found when the metal is scaling. A time-temperature study of the oxides formed on both molybdenum and tungsten may indicate whether there exist any peculiarities in the oxide structures of the thin film region compared with those of the scaling region of oxidation. In a recent paper the authors7 presented an investigation of the structures of the oxide films formed on the metals iron, cobalt, nickel, chromium and copper. The results of these studies are presented in graphical form as existence diagrams of the oxides on a time-temperature scale. The existence diagrams of the oxides occurring on some of the metals are simple and show few chemical transitions, but there are many cases in which the physical state of the oxide surface changes as a function of time and temperature, as evidenced by the appearance or disappearance of orientation effects and sharpness of patterns. Single crystal rods of cadmium collapse under uniaxial compression into peculiar kinks if the (0001) glide plane is nearly parallel to the axis of compression. In his report first describing this behavior, Orowan1 proposed that these "kink bands" do not develop entirely by ordinary gliding and twinning but by a special mechanism in which glide lamellae of uniform thickness snap abruptly to a tilted position that permits lattice continuity across the glide planes. He concluded that a portion of each boundary of a kink band consists of a plane (non-crystallo-graphic) which bisects the angle between the glide planes on the two sides of it, and along which the bending and the dislocations are concentrated. The data presented by Orowan seemed to us to be insuffcient to conclude that a wholly new mechanism of deformation was responsible for the kinks. Therefore, we have investigated zinc, which is hexagonal close-packed and has an axial ratio near to cadmium, to see whether similar bands are produced, and whether the ordinary mechanisms of glide, bend-gliding, twinning, and the formation of deformation bands can account for its mode of deformation. We find that kinks form profusely in zinc as shown in Fig 1. The structure of these kinks, reported below, seems to require no new mechanism for their explanation, but indicates that kink bands are a special form of deformation bands and develop gradually, solely from basal glide. A theory covering the formation and structure of the bands is presented in detail because it is seldom possible to study deformation bands under such simple conditions, yet many principles applying to these kinks should also apply to deformation bands in general. Experimental Procedures Single crystal rods of 2-3 mm diam and 10-15 cm length were grown by the Brideman technique from swaged wire of Horsehead Special zinc in un-coated pyrex tubes. Orientations of the rods were determined with an optical goniometer after cleaving the rods at liquid air temperature. Crystals of desired orientations were then selected and used as "seeds" to grow additional crystals approximately 4 ft in length from which all specimens were cut. The wires were compressed in two ways: in a simple hydraulic handpress —a "soft" machine—and in a Riehle hydraulic testing machine modified to produce very "stiff" action by the simple expedient of inserting lengths of steel bars at the sides of the zinc crystals between the compression plates. For metallographic examination, the specimens were mounted in sealing wax. THE significance of the hcp (E) structure, which appears when Fe-Cr-Ni alloys (stainless steels) are transformed martensitically, has been the subject of considerable study and speculation.'-7 It has been proposed that the hcp structure is an intermediate phase in the transformation: fcc (austenite) — hcp (E) -bcc (0, martensite). However, recent studies by transmission electron microscopy6,7 have indicated that the hcp structure may be a consequence of the large shear strain (10 deg) associated with the fcc to bcc transformation. That is, the transformation to a bcc structure is accompanied by extensive dissociation of dislocations in the parent austenite, which has a low stacking-fault energy.'-'' X-ray diffraction analysis of the transformed alloy reveals a pattern of lines corresponding to an hcp structure, together with the parent austenite and the bcc product. The fact that the hcp structure is observed only in association with the bcc product in these alloys1'4'6'7 lends support to the conclusion that the hcp structure is a secondary product of the transformation. But, the evidence is circumstantial and more definite resolution of the two possibilities mains to be obtained. If the hcp structure is an intermediate product of the transformation, as in 1) above, then two distinct Ms temperatures should be observed, Ms and To evaluate this possibility, three different techniques that are particularly sensitive to the structural changes accompanying such transformations have been used in an attempt to detect two transformation temperatures in an Fe-15.1 Cr-11.7 Ni alloy: 1) high-sensitivity differential thermal analysis, 2) the temperature dependence of resonant frequency (elastic moduli), and 3) internal friction of cylindrical specimens vibrating in either longitudinal or torsional modes. To obtain the necessary sensitivity, a differential thermal analysis technique was developed for the purpose, Fig. 1. The differential temperature between a nickel standard and the specimen was amplified to produce a sensitivity of 0.02OC (0.7 v) in temperature difference. The specimen and the standard were surrounded by a copper block and the entire assembly was immersed in a solution of methyl and ethyl alcohol, freezing point, - 140OC, which provided the necessary thermal stability to reduce temperature fluctuations to negligible proportions. A cooling rate of about 1.5OC per min was obtained by bubbling liquid nitrogen through the liquid bath. Throughout the mining industry, many companies perform sophisticated business and financial analyses of proposed capital investments. However, once the project is approved, it is never reevaluated. At best, there is an attempt to control capital costs and minimize overruns. The post-installation appraisal, a formalized review of investment performance, may prove helpful. Typical Project Review A typical capital investment is approved after business and financial benefits have been reviewed with management.* The financial data shown to management often include a net income statement, cash flow analysis and summary economic data similar to those shown in Table 1 overleaf. These financials report the expected impact of the project on the corporation financial statements. This project is a rudimentary example of a capital investment decision. An actual project would undergo a more sophisticated analysis incorporating depletion benefits, deferred taxes and a detailed cost breakdown. The example project has several financial benefits that could result in management approval. For example, it provides an immediate net income benefit to the company, generates positive cash flows every year of the project life and has a discounted cash flow rate of return of 25 percent. However, it also has the disadvantage of a long payback period. A sensitivity analysis would show which areas of the analysis have the greatest impacts on profitability. Post-Installation Program Objectives The post-installation appraisal goes beyond the analysis shown in Table 1 by comparing actual results to those projected in the original economic analysis. The post-installation program has three primary objectives: 1. To provide a periodic performance review of major spending programs. 2. To review decision-making and evaluation procedures. 3. To provide a means of controlling individual project investments. The first major function of the post-installation program is the periodic review of actual performance of projects and investment programs, identifying those factors which proved critical to the health of investments. This review will serve to keep management abreast of progress, provide a comparison of actual performance against expectations, and provide valuable information that can be used for improving future economics. The second major function of the program is to perform a continuous review of the decision-making process. This includes testing of evaluation procedures, forecasting techniques, and logic used in making decisions. An information system should be set up whereby original evaluations and historical performance data gathered under the appraisal program are documented for use by evaluators and management when assessing past and future investment proposals. Such data should be particularly useful in evaluating new and developing types of operations and in activities where companies repeatedly reinvest. The primary purpose of this feedback system is to sharpen estimates to assure that they are realistic and attainable. The appraisal program also provides assurance that consistent evaluation procedures are being used throughout a company, leading to improved procedures

In the Southwest a number of large steel chimneys discharge the gases from the copper smelting furnaces. Some of these chimneys show no deterioration after twenty years, others show serious deterioration after tour years service. A steel stack 20 ft. 7 1/2 in. (6.3 m.) in diameter by 279 ft. (85 m.) high, Fig. 1, used for roaster gases only at the Calumet & Arizona Mining CO.'s plant at Douglas, Ariz., was lined to the top of the bell, 40 ft. (12 m.) from the base, with common brick placed on end, lime and cement mortar being used. Above the bell, the stack was lined with 4 by 4 by 8 in. (10 by 10 by 20 cm.) building tile, placed on end, making a lining 4 in. thick. The tiles were supported on angle-iron rings, riveted to the inside of the chimney shell about 15 ft. apart. The chimney was put into use in the latter part of 1913. Four years later, considerable of the tile lining had fallen out of place and mixed with the flue dust at the bottom of the chimney. About a year later, several flattened and distorted sheets were noticed about 70 ft. below the top. An investigation showed that the thickness of these distorted sheets, which was originally 1/4in., had been reduced one half. One year later, or six years after the chimney went into use, several holes, a square foot and smaller in area, appeared near the flat spots mentioned. Soon afterwards, when the chimney was shut down for repairs, it was found that most of the tile lining for 125 ft, from the top had fallen out and that the steel shell was badly corroded; but where the lining remained in place the shell was undamaged. Many of the tile which had fallen out of place had become soft or flaky and crumbling, others were as hard as when placed. An analysis of the hard and soft tile is shown on p. 2. These tile were of a fireclay mixture, and were used instead of common brick on account of lower cost. The steel forming the upper 125 ft. (38 m.) was replaced, and a 4 1/4-in. (11-cm.) lining of firebrick was laid from the bell to the top of the chimney. The brick were placed on end, wedges and keys being used. After each 8-in. course was set, keyed, and wedged tight, thin mortar —water, sodium silicate, and finely ground silica—was worked into the joints. The brick are supported on angle-iron rings, every 15 ft., in the same way as the tile.

Having been associated with the operation of the de Vooys process for coal, which has treated 13,000,000 tons per annum, and recognizing the process as of value in ore sorting, Huntington, Heberlein and Co. Ltd. (Great Britain) in 1936 made an examination of all other existing methods. In none of the pioneer applications had recognition been given to the necessity for maintaining certain conditions that are essential for sorting certain ores if a truly efficient separation by gravity alone is to be assured. Consequently, in 1936-1937 Huntington, Heberlein and Co. Ltd., with Pearson, employing certain ideas connected with the de Vooys application, commenced the development of a separator that would allow conformance with optimum conditions in the zone where separation is effected. Later, Holt and Wade added to the value of the original application by Wuensch, Rakowsky and others, whose conceptions are being successfully operated today. Meantime, Trostler had enhanced the value of the original H-H. process by improvements that are now embodied in operating plants, and today the process incorporates an improved apparatus and a stable medium that produce the optimum conditions for separation. These conditions are: 1. Elimination of disturbing currents in the separating zone; 2. Reduction to a minimum of medium-density differences throughout the separating zone; 3. Stable medium of minimum viscosity to permit the unretarded fall of mineralized particles; 4. Removal of products of separation with minimum disturbance to the separating zone. Design of Separator The H-H. sink-and-float separator consists of a pyramidal tank in which the separation actually takes place, connected at the bottom with an inclined bucket elevator. The tank and the elevator are filled with medium to within a few inches of the top of the tank. Medium is fed into the separator at a variety of points, according to the type of ore being treated, and it is withdrawn from the separator at two points: (1) together with the float product, by means of a variable-speed addle, at the surface of the medium, and (2) by flowing over an adjustable weir cut in the side of the elevator casing. The prepared ore is fed onto the surface of the medium. The intermediate paddles, which revolve at a slow speed of 2 to 5 r.p.m., move the floating ore across the bath from feed end to float-discharge end. The ore, which is heavier than the medium, sinks below the sweep of the addles and reaches the boot of the bucket elevator, which discharges it without disturbance of the separating zone. These arrangements for withdrawing medium from the separator allow the use of minimum flows, which connote minimum
