In this study, we compare the influence of two water soluble polymer-based organic binders added to bentonite, to form a hybrid-binder system for Iron Ore Pelletization. The kinetics of the agglomeration process and resulting properties of green pellets were analyzed, and examined in detail through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) analytical techniques. It was encountered that the differences in the mechanical properties of the pellets produced by each binder system could potentially be explained by the ability of the polymer to interact with bentonite at a macromolecular level.

O trabalho descreve os principais resultados dos testes industriais realizados na Usina Presidente Vargas, CSN, Brasil, envolvendo a adição de um catalisador à mistura de carvões, em termos da qualidade do coque e do processo da coqueria. O catalisador em questão é o produto Thermact, que possui partículas nanométricas em sua composição, fornecido pela empresa Abhitech Energycon Limited, Índia. O catalisador foi dosado e adicionado à mistura de carvões via correia transportadora, na proporção, em peso, de 1kg de catalisador para 4.000kg da mistura de carvões. Os resultados dos testes realizados nas Baterias # 1, 4A, 4B e 5 com a adição de um catalisador à mistura de carvões, sinalizaram a viabilidade técnica e financeira da sua aplicação no processo da coqueria. Os principais benefícios decorrentes da adição do catalisador foram: i) aumento potencial da capacidade de produção de coque ao redor de 10% ou, alternativamente, melhoria da qualidade do coque - aumento de 1,4% do valor médio do índice de resistência mecânica a frio do coque, DI150/15, mantendo-se o tempo total padronizado do processo de coqueificação, visando à preservação das Baterias, ou ainda, a utilização de uma mistura de carvões de menor custo, sem prejuízos ao atendimento à especificação do coque para os Altos-Fornos; b) aumento da geração e redução do consumo de gás de coqueria, GCO; iii) aumento na produção de BTX (Benzeno, Tolueno, Xileno) e redução da produção de alcatrão na Planta de Carboquímicos; iv) limpeza do sistema “PROven”, “goosenecks”, tubos de ascensão e paredes dos fornos, sinalizando a sua viabilidade técnica e econômica.

Este trabalho visa apresentar os resultados de um estudo de correlação envolvendo concentração magnética nas escalas bancada-piloto e piloto-industrial. Os testes que sustentam este estudo foram realizados no CPT (Centro de Pesquisas Tecnológicas da Vale). A correlação entre as escalas piloto-industrial tende a ser direta, uma vez que, concentradores magnéticos piloto possuem os mesmos mecanismos de atuação de um industrial. Por outro lado, entende-se que a correlação entre as escalas bancada-piloto não seja tão direta assim, necessitando de um entendimento/conhecimento maior para descrevê-la. Aproveitou-se este trabalho também para estudar uma forma de melhorar o modelo atual utilizado pelo CPT em interpretações mineralógicas voltadas para concentração magnética. A metodologia deste trabalho foi dividida em seis etapas distintas: escolha das amostras, amostragem industrial, caracterização das amostras, interpretação mineralógica, testes piloto, testes de bancada e análise de correlação. Em relação aos resultados, este trabalho confirma a interpretação mineralógica como uma boa ferramenta para estimar recuperação mássica e qualidade de concentrado em processos de concentração magnética, e que modelo utilizado atualmente pelo CPT apresenta melhores resultados em relação à modificação proposta neste trabalho. Os testes piloto apresentam resultados praticamente idênticos aos resultados da industrial, confirmando que a correlação entre as escalas piloto-industrial é direta. Por fim, este trabalho confirma que é possível correlacionar os resultados de bancada com os resultados da piloto. Os gráficos de correlação apresentam R2 superior a 0.77, podendo se basear na utilização de equações de regressão para estimar resultados piloto, a partir dos resultados de bancada. Entretanto, entende-se que é necessário realizar teste complementares, uma vez que, o espaço amostral (número de amostras estudadas) foi pequeno.

This paper call attention to increasing ratio of oxygen depletion from atmosphere besides the global worries about CO2 concentration increase in the atmosphere. It highlights the big mistake in considering Carbon Capture and Storage, CCS, as a way to reduce the increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. As a hypothetical example it presents an existing pseudo-ecosystem of manufacturing that has real windows of opportunity to increase its share in the global materials production industry, even in highly industrialized countries. As a suggestion and example the author point out possibilities to almost fulfill the proposed simple rules to be considered inside an ecosystem of manufacturing utilizing the production of steel via biomass versus fossil coal. A relevant and difficult rule to be attained in a quasi-ecosystem of manufacture is to be a near zero atmosphere oxygen depletion integrated process. The industrial alternatives that utilizes the actual photosynthesis are the ones that can reach a higher ecosystem of manufacture’s index. It is presented an ideal integrated steelmaking process where the gaseous, liquids and solid residues generated in one part of the system are or can be utilized in the other parts of the same system. A potential ecosystem of manufacture to produce primary iron is illustrated in the paper.

Next to the paper industry, the steel industry is a major user of water. Without an adequate and reliable source of “good” water, steel cannot be produced. The use of water has a direct impact on steel quality and on our environment. Used improperly, water can also add unnecessary costs. Used properly, water can maintain and improve steel quality, enhance our environment and control or reduce the “total cost of operation”. Water needs to be more than just “wet and not lumpy”. Water quality needs to be based on the end use. This paper discusses ways to manage many of the water systems. With little or no capital investment it is possible to develop operating practices that protect your initial investment, ensure that the water systems do not have a negative impact on quality or your production costs and also minimize your chance of having an environmental incident.

Pyrowear®Alloy 53 steel is an excellent material for the construction of drive transmission components (gears, shafts, etc.) which have to operate in difficult conditions primarily in the aviation industry (Fig. 1.). Among the properties of such items is a high case hardness and abrasion-resistance, while the core remains flexible and is capable of carrying large impact loads. They can work at elevated temperatures with limited lubrication. The thermal treatment of such materials is based on case hardening by means of carburizing. This paper presents the technology of vacuum carburizing of Pyrowear® Alloy 53 steel. It discusses the methods of establishing different profiles of carbon concentration in a layer and their influence on the hardness profile. The effects of sub-zero treatment and tempering on the properties of the hardened case are also considered. It also presents a SimVaC® simulator of vacuum carburizing, designed especially for Pyrowear® Alloy 53 steel, which provides highly accurate predictions of the outcome of the process as the profile of carbon concentration in the layer, or vice versa: establishes the process parameters which will guarantee the required profile.

CO2 geological storage is one of the current technologies developed worldwide to reduce industrial emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Two main mineral types of deep geological reservoir could be contemplated for CO2 storage: sandstone reservoirs and carbonaceous reservoirs. Geochemical reactivity of a dolomite-calcite mineral compound and magnesite pure mineral was studied with a set of nine experiments per crushed mineral phase with two saline solution and with mQ water and three temperatures: 50°C, 90°C and 150°C. Experiments were performed in batch reactors with 250 bar of CO2 partial pressure during 24h to assess the effect of temperature and salinity in constant CO2 pressure. Solid characterization was performed by XRD and solution analysis by ICP-OES. Acidification of solutions due to CO2 dissolution in water is the main source of reactivity in the system. Proton concentration increases and causes partial dissolution of initial dolomite, calcite and magnesite and release of Ca2+ and Mg2+ cations in solution. Bicarbonate anion (HCO3) concentration also increases due to CO2 dissolution in water and carbonate minerals dissolution. Temperatures of 90°C and 150ºC increase the kinetic of reaction and the dissolution of minerals and cations release in solution. New carbonate crystalline phase precipitates as a Ca, Mg solid solution between dolomite and calcite pure poles.

In the early stage of front end studies of an Iron Ore Project, the sizing of surge capacities and stockpiles are normally assumed based on the experience of the study team. Understanding and sizing of these capacities at the early stages of the project are important for future stages of the project as drastic changes in sizes will impact the economics of the project at that stage. An innovative user configurable high level dynamic modeling tool has been developed to assist in speedy evaluation of assumptions made by the study team. This model incorporates systems or facilities that are commonly used iron ore project from mine to port. This model includes subsystems that will simulate all the logistical components, major process plant systems required for an Iron ore project. The output data provided by this high level dynamic simulation tool will enhance the confidence level of engineering carried out during the early stage of the project. This paper discusses the innovative tool capabilities and a test case comparing various techniques used in iron ore project front end studies.

The automotive industry’s interest in galvannealed (GA) boron steel for hot forming processes application has been steadily increasing due to its excellent surface quality, galvanic protection provided to the parts, good paint adhesion and better weldability in relation to other coatings for this application. In this study, samples of 22MnB5 galvannealed steel were heat treated and hot stamped on a water cooled die in laboratory scale. The influence of heat treatment on stability of coating and steel was assessed by using initial heating rates 11.0ºC/s and 15.0ºC/s. Microstructural evolution of galvannealed coating and structural integrity of steel during hot forming were investigated by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis (SEM/EDS/Line scan), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical microscopy (OM). It was possible to quantify the Fe-Zn phase evolution during hot forming, to understand the effect of these heating rates on the product properties and to establish an optimized heat treatment for hot forming of these steel. The heat treatment with the heating rate of 15.0ºC/s presented greater operational flexibility and final products free from surface defects or cracks in the substrate.

The present work is focused on the thermodynamic study of the methane or biogas mixtures conversion on Cu-ceria catalysts. Several experimental studies reported in literature have demonstrated the ability of these materials to operate as SOFC anodes for direct methane oxidation, with the evidence of enhanced tolerance towards sulfur poisoning and carbon deposition. More recently, experimental investigations have shown the feasibility of Cu-ceria anodes to directly operate with simulated biogas feeds at intermediate temperature (1023K). In this way, the effect of the ceria redox properties on the equilibrium composition is investigated, considering methane or biogas mixtures as the fuel. Conditions under which carbon deposition and sulfur poisoning can be prevented are determined. Our study combines results from the classical thermodynamics, obtained with the help of FactSage software, with the new Cu-S and Ni-S diagrams proposed in literature, which were calculated based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT). These diagrams are able to predict a region where sulfur interacts with the metal surface through chemisorption. A comparison between the performances of Ni-YSZ and Cu-CeO2 catalysts is established from a thermodynamic viewpoint. Theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental trends from literature.

Once installed rolling mills can look forward to a long life. Around 40% of the 140 conventional hot strip mills presently in operation were built between 1960 and 1970. 17 of the 29 CSP®-plants were commissioned before the year 2000 and have automation platforms that are obsolete and/or have outdated rolling technology. Keeping pace with the market requirements is an ongoing challenge for producers of flat steel. It is a real balancing act keeping production facilities performing at necessary levels, safeguarding the investment and keeping outage periods to a minimum. To overcome these demanding factors and strike the right balance allowing for the production of higher grade steel that meets the current market price the installation of mechanical equipment as well as automation platforms and process technology must meet the latest technology standards. Being discussed in this paper are the different motives for modernizations along with their impact on project handling and commissioning philosophies. Experience gained during recent modernization projects in the field of flat steel rolling relating to Steckel / plate mills or current CSP® modernizations will be shared and demonstrate that each modernization has its own individual solution. Specific strategies are explained to help optimize production, increase plant agility and maximize the return on investment.

Pelletizing of iron ore fines is an important process used to produce high quality of raw materials for the subsequent reduction processes in the ironmaking industries. The process involves the production of green pellets and subsequent induration on a traveling grate furnace to promote inner partial melt and agglomeration which confer physical and metallurgical proprieties appropriated to the subsequent reduction processes. The pellets are produced with addition of charcoal to improve efficiency in the reduction processes. The lignin coal from sugarcane straw is an alternative source to replace the charcoal or coke in the self reduction of pellets. This work focused on the influence of biomass on the chemical kinetics parameters inner agglomerate pellet structure under industrial process conditions of the travelling grate furnace due hot gas flows within the pellets.

No presente artigo objetivou-se, principalmente, promover a síntese e caracterização de biofilmes ecológicos elaborados a partir do amido de batata doce e da crueira de mandioca, utilizando como plastificantes o glicerol e o sorbitol. O amido da batata doce foi obtido através de descascamento, trituração, filtração, decantação e secagem, respectivamente; enquanto a crueira de mandioca foi obtida por doação. Os biofilmes foram confeccionados na proporção de 3 gramas de amido/100 gramas de solução filmogênica, e 30 ou 40 % de plastificante em relação à massa de amido, as soluções foram aquecidas e agitadas à 80ºC, depositadas em placas Petri, e secas em estufa à 50ºC por 24 horas, e à temperatura ambiente. As amostras de biofilmes foram analisadas quanto aos aspectos visuais, solubilidade em água, teor de umidade, resistência química e Espectroscopia de Infravermelho por Transformada de Fourier (FTIR). Obteve-se 18,16% de rendimento na extração do amido; solubilidade em água e teor de umidade variando, respectivamente, entre 0,03-0,12, e 2,79-11,812%; os filmes mostraram-se insolúveis em clorofórmio, acetona e álcool; e as reações foram confirmadas através de Espectroscopia de Infravermelho por Transformada de Fourier.

In this scenario, the need to improve asset operational performance, makes complex studies involving technical knowledge and asset life behavior, become important tools to support companies strategic accomplish. These studies allow consider performance, costs and operational risks relationship in the decision make process. The Asset Management approach support these studies in order to observe the whole asset life cycle, understand value chain through all company process and optimize the asset economic life. In this context, the present technical work has the purpose to support asset management decision making regarding ArcelorMittal Vega cold rolling drive motors, through the motors fail behavior modelling and estimated the risks involved in asset management decision. Through the Reliability, Availability and Mantenability (RAM) analysis, simulations were performed considering the failure, repair cost data and investments to build options to mitigate the operational risks.

Ultrasonic Stirring Technology (UST) is used in this study to manufacture Al-based nano-composites. Ultrasonic cavitation plays an important role in refining the microstructure, dispersing the nanoparticles and breaking up clusters of nanoparticles. In this paper, 6061/A356 alloys and Al2O3/SiC nanoparticles are used as the matrix alloys and the reinforcements, respectively. The nanoparticles were inserted into the molten alloy and dispersed by ultrasonic cavitation and acoustic streaming. A previously developed multiphase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model was used to study the cavitation and the nanodispersion phenomena during ultrasonic processing of these alloys. A comparison between the mechanical properties of the as-cast 6061 and 356 alloys and nano-composites has been performed.

A influência do tempo de encharque criogênico no amortecimento da liga Ni-43,9%Ti foi investigada. Por meio da técnica de excitação por impulso determinou-se essa propriedade de amostras submetidas a diferentes tempos de encharque criogênico a -196oC. Observou-se que o amortecimento sofreu aumento de até 119% para corpo de prova submetido ao encharque criogênico por 24 horas.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo discutir a abordagem e os resultados referentes à versão do modelo de vazamento direto atualmente instalado na Aciaria da ArcelorMittal Tubarão. Para este trabalho fez-se uso de uma massa de dados histórica de corridas, propondo um novo modelo para predição de composição química (Fósforo e Manganês) ao fim de sopro dos convertedores, baseado em Redes Neurais Artificiais. Em seguida foram avaliados os resultados alcançados e respectivos potenciais de ganho. Desta forma pode-se avaliar e concluir que o uso de técnicas de Machine Learning pode trazer um aumento de produtividade na fabricação de aço minimizando-se os tempos de espera por análises químicas.

The present work is based on the characterization of nonmetallic inclusions in Ti stabilized ultra-low carbon steel, produced in a large steel mill. Due to a large incidence of submersed valve clogging in a continuous casting, the study is important in order to know the characteristics of the inclusions which are causing the problem. Total of 24 heats were sampled in the tundish and manually analyzed with a scanning electron microscope. The results revealed that 98.65% of the 3183 inclusions analyzed were solid in steelmaking temperature and 66.54% were alumina. The solid inclusions of alumina have low wettability for the iron bath, showing a high tendency of agglomeration in the submersed valves, affecting the castability. It has been concluded from the results and literature that some alternative measures such as the application of the treatment with calcium, precautions to avoid steel re-oxidation and the total or partial replacement of the pre-deoxidized element; would reduce the obstruction problem.

Os processos de estampagem de materiais de alta resistência requerem o uso de aços ferramenta de alto desempenho, uma vez que a aplicação de pressões elevadas produz o desgaste acelerado das ferramentas de conformação, e até mesmo a ocorrência de falhas catastróficas e prematuras. Frequentemente, o desgaste de ferramentas é superado pelo aumento da dureza dos punções e matrizes, o que implica na diminuição da tenacidade. Esta estratégia, entretanto, não pode ser aplicada em operações de conformação de alta solicitação em que os componentes devem ser tenazes o suficiente para suportar as cargas elevadas envolvidas. A maior dureza retarda o início das trincas, porém também diminui a tenacidade do material, facilitando sua propagação. Uma dureza mais baixa, por outro lado, propicia maior resistência do material à propagação de trincas pela maior tenacidade, porém facilita sua nucleação. Constata-se então, que a relação dureza e tenacidade em aços ferramenta deve ser aprimorada através de um design microestrutural preciso, no qual ambas as propriedades possam ser melhoradas. O presente estudo buscou avaliar a vida útil de punções e matrizes de aços ferramenta AISI D2 e VF800AT limitada por trincas e lascamentos em processos de estampagem. O VF800AT apresentou resultado satisfatório e contribuiu para um aumento de até cinco vezes da vida útil da ferramenta quando comparada com o aço AISI D2. Os ferramentais empregados nesse trabalho foram também caracterizados em laboratório por meio de microscopia óptica e eletrônica de varredura. O superior desempenho das ferramentas produzidas em aço VF800AT é justificado pela sua superior tenacidade em relação ao AISI D2, devido a uma microestrutura composta de uma matriz de martensita revenida e carbonetos primários em menor fração volumétrica.

The electric steel industry has reached a level of maturity in its relative participation in the world’s steel production. As the industry has grown and matured, EAF steel producers have participated in an ever more competitive market. This competition has led to a continuous search for lower cost alternatives for energy and input materials. Over the years, the Electric Steel Furnace community of operators has developed a variety of technological improvements geared to increasing EAF productivity. Operators have emphasized lowering operating costs and improving the quality of steels produced. Depending on market conditions, the EAF operators may run with different goals and priorities. In times of low demand, the goal may be to operate with an emphasis on cost and the goal of maximizing cost effective use of resources. When the market demand is high the goal may be to maximize EAF throughput. The objective of this work is to list some of the EAF operating best practices observed by our team in the electric arc furnace operations around the world. EAF operators can consider and possibly implement these practices depending on the specifics of each EAF operating reality.
