A reliable laboratory method to characterise the response of free gold particles when subjected to flash flotation conditions has been developed by AMIRA P420 researchers at Curtin University. This test has been applied to assess the flotation recovery of gravity recoverable gold from free milling ores as well as synthetic ores featuring either a gravity concentrate or gold powder. The Mi Vida mine , Big Indian district , San Juan County , Utah , is in an ore deposit of uranium and vanadium minerals disseminated in certain sedimentary beds of the Triassic Chinle formation . Statistical analysis of assays of samples taken from the ore body affords an estimate of the grade of the ore body and provides a prediction about the direction of best mineralization beyond the sampled area . The basic data analyzed are assay results for uranium ( Uз Og ) , vanadium (V₂O ) , and lime (CaO ) from 225 channel samples cut at 79 sample points . Through the use of appropriate statistical methods , particularly regression analysis , the grade of ore may be estimated more precisely than by conventional means , and the most favorable direction to extend the mine may be predicted . Frequency distributions of assay residuals for uranium , vanadium , and lime are compared to frequency distributions of assays without regard to trend . Correlations among these variables are obtained and interpreted . The statistical methods employed illustrate certain techniques that may be used to analyze assay data from ore deposits in general .

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar as correlações entre o IPM (Índice de Permeabilidade Magnética) das pelotas queimadas, as trincas formadas durante o processamento das pelotas no pelotamento/endurecimento e o FeO de cada amostra. As análises evidenciaram que o tipo de trinca presente na pelota impacta no IPM fazendo diminuir a correlação entre IPM e FeO. O entendimento do fenômeno possibilitou desenvolver uma metodologia para determinação de um parâmetro que pudesse ser correlacionado ao FeO das pelotas de minério de ferro, estendendo sua aplicação ao pellet feed, baseado nas propriedades magnéticas do material. O método consiste em medir a variação da indutância de um solenoide, provocada pela introdução do material que se deseja determinar o parâmetro no núcleo de uma bobina, determinando-se relativamente a permeabilidade magnética das pelotas e pellet feed. Para tal, foi definida uma metodologia nas quais alterações devidas à variação da densidade da amostra, causadas principalmente devido a trincas nas pelotas, sejam mitigadas, garantindo a repetibilidade dos resultados. Assim, foi possível a determinação do FeO das amostras através da medição deste novo parâmetro, de forma mais rápida, fácil e com um custo consideravelmente menor que na química analítica clássica.

As a growing mining company, ERAMET is looking for new positions in the strategic metals market. In this context, the Gabonese Maboumine pyrochlore deposit is currently being studied for the recovery of niobium, tantalum, rare earths and uranium. This ore shows mineralogical and chemical characteristics that make it challenging to process by existing practices, from both technical and economic points of view. ERAMET has developed since 2008 an innovative hydrometallurgical process, which has been successfully operated at a pilot plant scale (more than 35 weeks in continuous). The upstream part of the process aims to dissolve valuable elements in sulphuric acid. The first step is dedicated to dissolve the ore matrix, leaving the pyrochlore unleached. The second step consists in chemically breaking down pyrochlores in order to form soluble species of the valuable elements. After dissolution, the valuable elements are separated into different flows: niobium and tantalum are recovered and transformed as commercial ferroniobium on one side, and rare earths and uranium remain in the solution to be recovered in the downstream part of the process. The main goal of this paper is to discuss the upstream part of the process, which has given successful results.

The purpose of this investigation was twofold: (1) To devise a rapid method for determining quantitatively the porphyrin-carboxylic acid content of a particular crude-oil porphyrin aggregate, and (2) to isolate porphyrins in the crystalline state from crude-oil porphyrin aggregates. The first purpose was accomplished by applying adsorption chromatography. In fulfillment of the second aim three different crystalline porphyries were isolated by methods which involved both adsorption chromatography and fractionation of benzene solutions with hydrochloric acid of varying strength. The three porphyrins had etio, rhodo-, and phyllo-type absorption spectra, respectively. INTRODUCTION Many samples of petroleum have, as interesting minor constituents, chemical compounds known as metalloporphyrins. Their presence in crude oil and other bituminous materials was first discovered by Treibs a quarter century ago. Much experimental work has been done on metalloporphyrins because of their importance to the petroleum industry. They have a deleterious effect on refining catalysts. The ash resulting from the burning of heavy fuel oil is very reactive, We to the presence of metallic constituents, particularly vanadium. In oil-fired gas turbines, the ash may build up on the blades, causing imbalance of the rotors and, in addition, severe corrosion. In industrial boilers, the ash residue is responsible for severe damage to boiler tubes and to the refractory brickwork (15).4 Through study of the chemical constitution of the various metalloporphyrins found in petroleum, much can be learned concerning the origin, migration, and history of crude oils.

Open pit mining commenced at Lihir Island in 1997 and is undertaken using a conventional drill, blast, load, haul methodology. Unique challenges at the operation include an active geothermal system, a well-developed advanced argillic blanket in the upper portions of the orebody and high rainfall. Grade control is effective utilising routine blast cone sampling. While this provides ‘just in time’ grade information for mill blending, there are opportunities to improve scheduling of mill feed, based on material classification of clay types and sulfur grades. The nature of the clay can impact on the handling properties while the sulfur grade is an important guide for autoclave blending, required for refractory gold. Drilling below the pit floor introduces hazards from the identified geothermal field. A trial Reverse Circulation (RC) program was implemented with the aim of defining four benches below the active mining bench. A comprehensive risk analysis, including the geothermal environment, was undertaken to design a drill collaring procedure with pressure diversion equipment. Operator exposure was minimised through ‘nil on foot’ principles with the driller located in an onboard cab, utilising remote rod handling. Sampling personnel operate in an elevated platform with access to protective covering. Samples from blastholes and the RC holes are processed at two site laboratories. One provides conventional Au fire assays with additional Infrared Combustion (Leco style) S analysis. The second laboratory collects material classification details from portable XRF (pXRF), near infra-red spectrometry (ASD) and Hardness Indicator Testing (HIT). An existing workflow was updated by the site to deal with the additional samples and ensure production ‘turn around times’ were retained for short-term planning. This required some changes to drying temperatures, compositing and screen sizing for the material classification. All results from the two laboratories are loaded into a centralised acQuire database for estimation into a single block model that informs the 13 week medium term planning (MTP) schedule. This paper describes some of the logistical issues faced when drilling in a geothermal area. It also discusses the selection and commissioning Quality Assurance of the sampling equipment and drill rig. Integration of the resulting assay data with existing resource models is also explained.

It is well known that clays affect the flotation performance, and many of the refractory gold ores around the world contain clay minerals. Therefore, an ore sample from the Carlin Trend was selected for this study as these ores contain large quantities of clays. The presence of clay minerals in an ore makes it susceptible to a range of variables, such as the solution chemistry determined by pH and the chemistry of the rheology modifiers. The viscosity of the ore slurry was measured as a function of solid concentration and particle size distribution, in addition to using different rheology modifiers and pH regulators. The results were correlated with the ore flotation performance. It was found that various reagents known commonly as dispersants or rheology modifiers have different effects on the ore slurry viscosity. This study revealed that the gold flotation recovery can be improved by changing the pulp rheology.CITATION:Farrokhpay, S, Bradshaw, D and Dunne, R, 2013. This work presents a series of experiments of Fatigue Crack Growth (FCG), which are intended to provide evidence about the main parameter controlling this phenomenon, whereas still no agreement about this, since the Paris´ theory is based on the principle that FCG is controlled by the ?K and the Elber´s theory says that the driving force is ?Keff. For the development of the experiments, some DC(T) specimens were machined with two different thicknesses: 2 and 30 mm to perform FCG tests in plane stress and plane strain state, respectively. Besides this, all FCG tests were carried out with a constant ?K e Kmax, measuring the strain with a Strain-Gage bonded on the back face of the specimen and seven Strain-Gages located on the crack growth path. The data needed to measure the crack opening load, and the ?Keff, were collected through a program developed in Labview. Finally, the data post-processing was carried out based on the ASTM standards and several articles of recognized authors in this field, in order to compare the two positions with the experimental data, and this way conclude which is the most consistent theory with the observed behavior.

The NISOMI-81 opaque mineral searcil and identification system uses quantitative color values (Pe, dA, y) and VHN as its determinative para-meters. The system is designed to operate on a Radio-Shack TRS-80 micro-computer which is interfaced to a motorised diffraction grating mono-chromator (WILSCAN). Using an interfaced monochromator/photometer combination a typical identification including the measurement of the photometer data on both specimen and standard, calculation of color values and a computer search takes about 6 minutes. The data file contains 240 minerals at present but can easily be expanded as reliable new data become available.

Mechanically-induced chemical reactions between natural beach ilmenite (FeTiO3) and silicon (Si) have been examined by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses. The effect of various milling time on the phase transformation, crystallite size, and lattice strain of a beach sand ilmenite with silicon, and on their leaching behavior in hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been investigated. For mechanically activated FeTiO3, the crystallite size decreased and lattice strain increased monotonically with time of milling. However, the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenite with silicon showed a relatively smaller crystallite size and greater lattice strain compared with the mechanically activated ilmenite under the same milling condition. In accordance with the elapse of milling time, the intensity of both pure FeTiO3 and mechanically activated FeTiO3 gradually decreased. However, in case of the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenitereduction of FeTiO3 by silicon resulted in formation of rutile TiO2 at the milling time of 20 h and afterwards. Additional leaching experiments were carried out at an HCl/ilmenite (wt%) ratio of 20:1. The concentration of HCl was 3 M and the reaction temperature ranged from 70 to 90 oC. Mechanical activation was observed to significantly enhance the dissolution rates of both iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti) in HCl. Particularly, effects of both milling time and silicon addition on the dissolution rates of titanium and iron were significant, while those of temperature were relatively minor under the conditions investigated in this study. The interface between the matrix and the reinforcing fiber plays an important role in the efficiency by which an applied load is transmitted through the composite structure. The shear stress at the fiber/matrix interface can be associated with this load transference and, consequently, affects the composite strength. In the present work, pullout tests were used to evaluate the interfacial shear stress of malva fiber in epoxy matrix composites. A small critical length was found for the malva fiber embedded in epoxy, which corresponds to a relatively weak fiber/matrix bond and lower interfacial strength.

The study of ultrasonic-wave propagation in substances has been remarkably advanced in recent years in most engineering and science fields. The main object in studying the velocity of ultrasonic-wave propagation in solids, is to determine dynamic properties of these materials. The present paper, however, presents some other possible applications of ultrasonic-wave propagation in the study of rock mechanics as follows: Investigation of the mechanism of microseismic activites of geologic materials, (a) at initial or low stress level, (b) at final or fracture stress level, and (c) under fatigue loading condition. Also, correlations among stress level, density, and the velocity of ultrasonic-wave propagation in rocks are discussed in this paper.

Bessac's presence in Singapore started in 2014 with the construction of the Thomson metro line, which includes 18 miles of twin-bore tunnels and 22 stations split into 17 construction packages. Bessac joint venture was allotted the T219 lot. The works include the construction of a new 660-foot (200-meter) long transfer station, two parallel 19-foot (5.8 m) ID tunnels and a pedestrian underpass. The urban context and the very soft ground stratum imposed to utilize unusual tunneling techniques, from upgrading a slurry TBM to a high-density slurry TBM to launch with very low cover and canopy pipe roofing completed with a MTBM without retrieval shaft.

This paper reports the results of the study of the influences of concentration and modulus of sodium potassium silicate solution (Na-K activator) and curing mode on the phase composition, mi-crostructure and strength development in the geopolymers prepared using Class F fly ash. X-ray dif-fraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and MAS NMR are utilized in this study. It shows that the compressive strength increases while sodium potassium silicate solution modulus increases, but when modulus exceeds 1.7, the compressive strength decreases, and it decreases markedly while modulus is greater than 2.0. The compressive strength improves with increase of sodium potassium silicate solution concentration. When the concentration is 36%, the compressive strength reaches the maximum. Elevated temperature can increase the strength of samples synthesized using sodium potassium silicate solution with 32% concentration and modulus 1.2. Compared to the strength of the sample cured at 50?, the strength of the samples cured at 65? and 80? are higher at 1 day and 3 days, but when cured at 80?, strength is smaller than that cured at 50? for 7 days. When temperature is too high, too long curing time will decrease the strength. Long precuring at room temperature before application of heat is beneficial for strength development, and there is about 10%~50% increase in strength of the samples cured at 1 day precuring and 2 days elevated temperature as compared to the strengths of the samples cured for 3 days at elevated temperature or cured for 28 days at room temperature. The main product of reaction in the geopolymeric material is amorphous alkali aluminosilicate gel.

Reactions of gold?phosphino complexes [(AuX)(PR3)] (X= Cl, Br, I; R = organic rest) with Se(SiMe3)2 lead to the formation of gold complexes with chalcogenide bridges. The reaction of the complex Ph3PAuCl and tBuSe(SiMe3) gives the cluster [Au5Se2(PPh3)4]Cl 1. The in situ preparation of the complex [(AuCl)2dpph] (dpph = Ph2P(CH2)6PPh2) by reaction of dpph with Me2SAuCl, and subsequent reaction with Se(SiMe3)2 leads to the formation of [(Au3Se)2(dpph)3]Cl2 2. Reactions of the gold(I) complex [(AuCl)2dpppe], (dpppe = Ph2P(CH2)5PPh2) with Se(SiMe3)2 and InCl3 in different molar ratios lead to the formation of [Au10Se4(dpppe)4]InCl5 3 and [Au4(SeInCl3)2(dpppe)2] 4. The reaction of [(AuCl)2dpph] with Te(SiMe3)2 and GaCl3 produces the isostructural cluster compound [Au4(TeGaCl3)2(dpph)2] 5. From the reaction of Se(SiMe3)2 with [(AuCl)2dppe] (dppe = Ph2P(CH2)2PPh2) and InCl3 [Au8Se4In(dppe)4](InCl4)3 6 can be isolated. The structures of 1 - 6 were determined by X?ray diffraction.

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. From 2003 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A major focus of the investigations is developing strategies to maximise the beneficial use of the limestone that will be mined. Laboratory columns and field test pad investigations have been ongoing for six years examining limestone blends. Trial dumps utilising truck placement and conveyor/stacker placement and blending of limestone and acid generating rock have recently been constructed. In addition, based on initial results, investigations aimed at further evaluating the performance of limestone covers in this high rainfall environment have commenced. A significant finding has been the identification of strong armouring layers on sulfide surfaces within well-blended material and under limestone covers. These layers effectively isolate sulfides and thus progressively slow the oxidation rate to a level where the alkalinity load from the limestone exceeds the rate of acid generating. ARD is controlled and neutral low metal drainage results. The results have demonstrated that although limestone blending is effective, it is necessary to ensure that all size fractions within the blend receive adequate acid neutralising capacity to buffer the potential acidity. Because the sulfur content generally increases and the acid neutralising capacity decreases with decreasing particle size in limestone blends, the amount of limestone required greatly exceeds the stoichiometric requirement. This paper describes the development of limestone blending specifications for potentially acid forming overburden and presents the results of the ongoing limestone cover trials at the Grasberg mine.

"Major coal mining areas in eastern China have entered into the deep mining state. Gas pre-drainage, which has been successful at shallower depths, is not suitable at greater depths because of complex conditions. Coal permeability, which is closely related to the damage behavior of coal, is the most important parameter in determining gas migration and gas drainage in a coal seam. To achieve an optimal gas drainage design in a deep mining state, the damage and permeability evolutions of coal should be further studied. The progressive failure process of coal has been analyzed by conducting a series of triaxial loading and unloading tests. The development of coal fractures has been successfully quantified, and the corresponding characteristic stress points have been obtained by using Martin’s fracture model and the stress-strain curve. Coal will produce plastic deformation, and its permeability will rapidly increase when the stress level reaches damage expansion stress. INTRODUCTION Coal mine methane (CMM) is a general term for all methane released during and after mining operations. CMM is both a potentially valuable energy and a serious hazard in active coal mines. Degassing coal seams is important for mitigating this hazard and results in the beneficial recovery of a cleanburning, low-carbon fuel resource (Karacan, Ruiz, Cotè, and Phipps, 2011). The permeability of coal is a key parameter in determining CMM production, coalbed methane (CBM) production, CO2-enhanced coalbed methane (CO2-ECBM) production, and CO2 storage in coal seam reservoirs (Connell, Lu, and Pan, 2010; Chen et al., 2011; Perera, Ranjith, and Choi, 2013). Significant research has been condcuted to the study of the evolution of coal permeability. These studies revealed that coal permeability evolution is controlled by the competing influences of effective stress and sorption-induced coal deformation. Chen et al. (2011) investigated the influence of an effective stress coefficient and sorption-induced strain on the evolution of coal permeability. Robertson and his team (Robertson, 2005; Robertson and Christiansen, 2005) measured sorption-induced matrix strain and permeability changes with regard to CO2, CH4, and N2. They found that the compressibility is not constant in a natural coal sample. Karacan (2007) conducted a series of experimental tests to study the swelling-induced volumetric strains internal to a stressed coal associated with CO2 sorption. Liu et al. (2016) investigated the effects of matrix swelling area propagation on the permeability evolution by using both natural and reconstituted samples. Many coal permeability models have been developed to describe the permeability evolution under uniaxial loading, biaxial strain, hydrostatic confining pressure, triaxial strain, and triaxial stress. Recently, some analytical permeability models have been developed to describe the anisotropic permeability behavior (Palmer, 2009; Pan and Connell, 2011; Robertson and Christiansen, 2005; Wang, Zang, Wang, and Zhou, 2014; Chen, Pan, Liu, and Connell, 2012)."

In recent years, the diminishing supply of natural gas has led energy suppliers and consumers to consider making synthetic natural gas from coal. A number of processes have been devised to produce gas from coal; many of these have been operated at the pilot stage and some have been operated commercially. Each process has specific coal feed stock requirements with respect to size consist and moisture content. The purpose of this presentation is to compare the estimated costs for coal handling, live storage, size reduction and drying facilities that would be required for delivery of coal feedstock to different gasification processes.

Dry coal processing is becoming increasingly favoured as a fine coal beneficiation technique. The decline in suitable good-quality coal, as well as the ongoing decrease in usable process water, makes dry beneficiation of the fine coal fraction even more crucial. Dry fine coal beneficiation is a relatively young process with most of the methods still in the developmental phase. Additionally, many of the dry processing options available are better suited for coarser (+6 mm) and easy-to-beneficiate coal. Air winnowing for fine particles has been established in both agricultural and pharmaceutical industries, which indicates that the method can be used to separate smaller particles on a density basis and therefore, may prove effective in the coal industry as well. A proof of concept study was conducted using both computer-based simulations (which do not form part of this paper) and physical experiments. The initial winnowing unit consisted of a closed box with a horizontal air stream flowing through the top section. Coal particles were injected into the air stream and displaced horizontally across a distance (x), depending on the particle size and density, thus actuating a separation based on these two parameters. For this study particle sizes of 6, 4 and 2 mm were used all with a density ranging from 1200 kg·m-3 to 2000 kg·m-3. The simulation in Star CCM+ confirmed the findings of the mathematic behavioural model and provided a virtual representation of the separation using streamlines and particle tracks. The coal tests prove that size separation can be achieved at an airflow velocity of 21 m·s-1 and the density cut-point can also be predicted by using the prediction matrices constructed as part of this study. The results show efficiency values (EPM) of 0.11 and 0.09 at density cut-points of 1400 kg·m-3 and 1500 kg·m-3 respectively. The data obtained from the study indicates that air winnowing can be used to separate fine coal particles based on both size and density. However, in order to achieve an efficient density separation, a narrow size range is required. With some improvements to the model, simulation, method and design, the separation efficiency can also be improved. The next phase of testing will include the upscaling of the process to a demonstration plant, optimising the separation unit and testing the method on different qualities of coal. The search for an improved anode for the electrowinning of lead from fluosi1icic acid medium has led the U.S. Bureau of Mines to investigate composites. Polymer bonded metal oxide powders which may contain catalyst additions were prepared by pressing. These composites display an improved activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction over electrodeposited lead dioxide on titanium, carbon, and nickel substrates. These composite electrodes contain 5 to 10 wt. " binding polymer, with the balance being metal oxides. Lowered anodic potentials achieved using the compnsite anodes resulted in lower levels of lead dioxide deposition during electrowinning.
