The U.S. Department of Energy is charged, by federal law, with the responsibility for developing and implementing programs for long- term storage and terminal disposal of high- level radioactive wastes from both commercial and defense nuclear operations. Approximately 288,000 cubic meters of defense high-level wastes are currently in storage at the government's Hanford Reservation in the State of Washington, the Savannah River Plant in South Carolina, and the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant in Idaho (U.S. Department of Energy, 1980a). High-level wastes from commercial nuclear power production are stored in water pools or basins at various power plant sites. At the end of 1980, approximately 7.460 metric tons of uranium, contained within 28,300 fuel assemblies was in storage at various reactor basins. Although the present inventory of defense wastes are many times larger in volume and in total level of radioactivity than the commercial wastes, in the future, the latter will constitute a substantial quantity of wastes that will have to be disposed of. The present electric generating capactiy of nuclear power plants in the United States is 56.5 Gigawatts-electric (GWe). The amount of spent fuel that would be discharged and accumulated by the year 2000 from these operating reactors would be 38,000 metric tons. With a projected growth of the nuclear industry to 180 GWe in the year 2000, the amount of spent fuel accumulated at the turn of the century could reach 89,000 metric tons of uranium or approximately 318,000 assemblies. In any case, whether one postulates a no growth pattern or one where nuclear power provides its share in the country's electric generating capacity in the next two decades, a means for safe and environmentally accept- able disposal of high-level nuclear wastes must be found. Storage of commercial wastes in water basins, either at reactor (AR) sites or at away from reactor (AFR) sites, and storage of reprocessed defense wastes in surface or near surface tanks is a temporary solution and is not an alternative for permanent disposal.

Immediate permanent roof support is an immediate thought of the mining engineer just as elimination of frequent time-consuming places changes is a thought of the methods engineer. The realization of those two objectives has the potential for improved safety with increased production is the thought of the general manager. Miner-Bolters Used a Generation Ago These are not new thoughts as the 1CM continous miner equipped with two integral roof drills was introduced twenty-five years ago. Approximately two hundred of these machines were sold in the next five years for use in medium and high seam operations. The 1CM miner chassis that remained stationary in the center of an entry or room while the ripper bar was swung and sumped hydraulically provided an ideal platform for mounting two roof drills that could be operated during the continuous miner's production cycle. Two roof bolts could normally be installed in less time than required for the mining cycle. A typical roof drill unit is shown in Figure I.

THIS REPORT gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of two Tennessee coals, one from the Jellico bed in Campbell County and the other from the Sewanee bed in Marion County. Jellico coal and blends with 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 coal were carbonized at 800° and 900° C. by the BM-AGA method. Sewanee coal was carbonized by the same method at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C.; blends with coals of similar and different ranks were carbonized at 800° and 900° C. The coals were subjected to various physical and chemical tests, including complete chemical analyses, low-temperature assays, and agglutinating, free-swelling, friability, plasticity, and expansion tests. The Tennessee coal field is a part of the Appalachian field, which extends from northern Pennsylvania to central Alabama. The Jelico bed, one of the most important in the State, is part of the Jellico formation, which is above the Lee formation of the Lower Pottsville. Sewanee coal bed belongs to the Sewanee conglomerate and is stratigraphically lower than the Jellico bed.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was used to evaluate the performance and optimize the design of a potroom ventilation system in an aluminium smelter facility. The ventilation system must ensure the inflow of fresh air to the workplace by natural draft and the removal of heat and hazardous emissions generated from the pot cell process. A full-scale, three dimensional CFD model of the potroom was developed to predict the air temperature distribution and contaminant concentrations throughout the potroom for the purpose of verifying that the industrial workplace hygiene standards will be met by the proposed ventilation system design. The modeling work was used to optimize the size of the floor gratings around the pot cell and roof ventilator, as well as determine damper settings in the roof ventilator. The effects of outside air temperature and external wind on the performance of the ventilation system was evaluated to ensure the design performs adequately in response to seasonal variations in climatological conditions.

Strain (work)-hardening in tensile tests were examined for low carbon steels with various ferrite grain sizes ranged from 0.4µm to 16µm. The steels had microstructures composed of ferrite grains and dispersed cementite particles. They were fabricated through warm caliber rolling with an accumulative area reduction of 93%. Strain-hardening rate at a given strain increased with an increase in volume fraction of cementite particles. The balance of yield strength and uniform elongation for ultrafine-grained structures could be improved by the dispersion of cementite particles. Effects of the cementite dispersion and the ferrite grain size on the strain-hardening rate can be roughly explained by the work-hardening model with GN-dislocation density. Strain-hardening design using dispersed cementites was proved to be effective in controlling ductility of the ultrafine-grained steels.

"Health hazards in the mining industry may be attributed to (1) abnormal conditions of the air, (2) improper sewage disposal, (3) bad drinking water, (4) bad illumination, and (5) local mechanical irritation.Abnormal conditions of the air may be due either to physical or chemical changes. The physical changes are (1) abnormal temperature, (2) abnormal humidity, (3) air movement, and (4) presence of dusts. Dusts may be either poisonous, as salts of lead, arsenic, zinc, or mercury; or nonpoisonous, as dust from coal, silica or quartz, limestone, gypsum, or silicates. Chemical changes may be due to changes in the normal constituents, as lowered oxygen or increased carbon dioxide; or to the addition of abnormal constituents, as carbon monoxide (white damp), hydrogen sulphide (stink damp), sulphur dioxide, methane (marsh gas, fire damp), hydrogen, and nitrogen.Effects of High Temperatures and Humidities The effects of various temperatures and relative humidities have been studied in mines in many countries. Harrington and myself studied them in the metal mines of this country and, in a report written recently, they have been summarized as follows:A. Remaining at rest in saturated air at 91 1/2° F, for one hour, With no air movement caused -1. An increase in body temperature;2. A moderate increase in pulse rate;3. Profuse sweating;4. Sulfide-rich tailings accumulated in a 4l-hectare impoundment at the Waite Amulet minesite near Noranda, Quebec, have undergone partial oxidation and destruction of the principal sulfides (pyrite and pyrrhotite) in the vadose zone. Mineralogical studies and whole-rock chemical analyses of 18 samples from 3 boreholes along a cross-section of the tailings pile indicate that the principal chemical manifestations of the alteration are a pronounced depletion in sulfide-sulfur, and an enrichment in total Fe as Fe203' Other elements such as Al, Mn, Mg, Ca, Na, and K in the solids show erratic or inconsistent variations, but a trend to Si enrichment in the oxidation zone is clear. The trend is interpreted to be a relative enrichment whereby the proportion of the stable silicate minerals has increased as a consequence of the consumption of pyrite and pyrrhotite in the oxide zone.

Despite numerous empirical, numerical, and hybrid studies conducted on the subject of coal rib failure, mine fatalities related to rib failures continue to occur at around 1.5 per year between 2009 and 2021. To date, a standard methodology for the design of coal rib supports that can accommodate the wide range of unique conditions found in coal mines in the USA has not been developed, forcing mine operators to rely on the trial-and-error process or industrial legacy practices for the design of coal rib support patterns. In this study, to better understand the support systems’ effectiveness, various rib bolting scenarios were investigated. A coal mass constitutive model is implemented to a distinct element method (DEM) code, and rib factor-of-safety (RibFOS) analyses were performed by applying strength-reduction for the coal matrix and explicitly modeled face cleats. Ribs with various overburden depths and mining heights composed of solid Banded-Bright coal (BBC) were considered in this study. Different scenarios such as rib bolt length and the number of bolts were studied to quantify the effect of primary rib support density on rib stability. As a result of the unsupported coal rib analyses, a decaying exponential relationship is proposed between the mining height-overburden depth and the RibFOS. The developed coal rib models clearly show the coal-rib bolt interaction and illustrate how the addition of rib bolts restricts the movement of the coal rib. The results reveal that the strength reduction method in DEM code with the coal-mass model can aid in the development of practical primary support charts, which can help in the rib support design process. In addition, an unsupported RibFOS cutoff is proposed, beyond which the addition of primary support cannot stabilize the failed rib structure.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report details the results of a series of large-scale experiments where small coal fires were used to ignite the conveyor belt at air velocities ranging from 0.76 to 6.1 m/s. In the tests, electrical strip heaters imbedded within a pile of coal were used to heat the coal to a point of flaming ignition. The flaming coal subsequently ignited the conveyor belt located approximately 5 to 10 cm above the coal pile. During the tests, temperature, CO, and smoke levels were continuously measured in order to determine both alarm time and level as the fire intensity progressed through the stages of smoldering coal, flaming coal, and flaming coal plus flaming belt. Analysis of the data leads to certain conditions of air velocity and sensor alarm levels that are required for early detection of conveyor belt entry fires. Two nomographs are presented, which define sensor alarm levels and sensor spacings as a function of belt entry cross-sectional area and belt entry air velocity.

The change in shape of the void in a sirzterir~g copper mass has been investigated as a juntction of' density. A serial sectioning' technique was used to eoaltrate the irregular shape of the void at two levels qf density. A measure of the void size and configuration, the proximity number, is defined and used to describe the progress of void removal. The process of. void removal deduced front the observations of this study contrasts with current sintering models in that it takes into account the irregularity of structure of a sintering mass and demonstrates that isolated Porosity does not occur first as spherical pores, but as large, definitely nonspherical sections of the void void volume. The process of sintering, about which there is much practical and theoretical knowledge, has evaded a direct and thorough analysis despite the intensity with which it has been studied for 60 years or so. This is due, of course, to the complex structure of a sintering mass and the inability to observe directly the development of a fully dense solid from the initial particulate arrangement. Extensive theoretical analyses have been based on the adoption of one or another of several model systems, that is, by visualization and analysis of some sort of regular assembly or arrangement of geometric "particles" approximating the conditions of a sintering mass. It seems appropriate at this time to try to examine experimentally in some detail the extent to which a sintering mass of irregular particles dlffers from these models. Many models deal with neck growth and the initial stage of sintering and follow the direction established by ~ucz~nski' in 1949 for the sintering of spheres to flat plates. Recently Johnson and cutler2 have adapted these models to sintering of powder masses. coble3 has presented a mathematical model for sintering that applies to the middle and final stages of the process. These papers, without exception, assume a regular geometry, generally spheres in contact in a regular array. Rhines~ and coworkers, however, are studying the sintering process by applying a model based on the topological concept of genus which permits them to consider an irregular structure. whites has described the various models with the exception of that of Rhines et al., and the assumptions on which they are based and their shortcomings. The present paper examines the geometric changes that occur in the powder mass during sintering by examination of the void. The method is to analyze a series of partially sintered structures and to propose from this analysis the sequence of events which occur in the removal of the void space as a sintering mass progresses from a collection of individual particles to a solid body. The irregular nature of the stacking of particles and of the particles themselves will be taken into account. The significant points derived from this study are: first, accurate reconstructions of the irregular void shapes are presented; second, it is clearly established that closed porosity occurs first as widespread volumes of interconnected porosity, definitely nonspherical in shape; and third, a new factor, the proximity number, is defined, which serves in this paper as a tool for describing the void shape changes observed, and which will be used in a later paper as part of the basis of a mathematical model for sintering. While the specific material studied is copper, the observations are thought to be relatively general as indicated by comparison of the results with partially sintered structures in other materials presented in the literature, both metallic and nonmetallic. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Four series of specimens representing progressive stages of the sintering process were prepared by sintering high-purity copper powder for various time periods. A relatively large particle size was used so that the void-solid interface could be readily distinguished at low magnification. In three series of specimens a loose stacking of particles was obtained by pouring powder into an alumina mold and lightly tapping the mold. The green density of such compacts was approximately 40 pct of theoretical density. Two of these three series utilized irregularly shaped particles in the size range -230 +325 mesh, one series sintered in vacuum and one in hydrogen at 950°C. The third series of loosely stacked particles consisted of spherical particles in the size range -270 +325 mesh, sintered in hydrogen at 950°C. A fourth series was prepared from compacted irregular particles sintered in hydrogen at 950°C. The specimens for this series were formed by lightly pressing the irregularly shaped particles in a steel die; the green density of the pressed pellets was approximately 60 pct. The irregularly shaped particles used in this study are shown in Fig. 1. The density of these particles, measured by a toluene picnometer technique, is 98.2 pct of theoretical density. Each particle is highly convoluted, and in some instances appears in cross section to contain internal porosity. The density measurement, however, indicates that completely enclosed porosity is very small so that the individual particles have a highly irregular surface but are essentially fully dense copper. Therefore, most of the void space that appears in two dimensions to be isolated within the particle is actually at the particle surface and connected to the external void in the dimension not included in the plane of the cross section. Mill tailings from conventional uranium extraction processes contain nearly all of the radium originally in the ore. Such tailings require controlled storage in perpetuity to safeguard the surrounding environment from radioactive contamination. Alternatives to controlled storage of the tailings are (1) removal of the radium from the tailings for separate storage or use or (2) removal of the radium when processing the uranium ore. In laboratory tests conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines, radium was leached from tailings using either hydrochloric acid or ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. A hydrochloric acid leaching method was used to extract both radium and uranium from the ore to yield tailings containing less radium than those produced by either conventional sulfuric acid or alkaline leaching processes. From 77 to 94 percent of the radium in mill tailings was concentrated by sedimentation in slime fractions representing nearly 25 weight-percent of the original sample.

Ross The first meeting of the Columbia Section was held on March 24, as a part of the 1916 Northwest Mining Convention which was held under the -auspices of the Spokane Mining Men's Club assisted by the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, the technical program being in charge of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association assisted by the local sections of the A. I. E. E., A. S. C. E., and A. I. M. E. The program of the successive sessions was carefully arranged with view to its application to mining, and in addition to the technical program there were exhibits of ores, minerals, devices, etc., of interest to the delegates, who numbered over 500. A portion of the program was also arranged with special reference to the requirements of the prospector and miner. A reception, a banquet, a complimentary luncheon, a regular daily call' of the Stock Exchange, a visit to the High Schools and to one of the substations of the Washington Water Power Company and to the Union Iron Works kept the visitors entertained, the ladies being looked after by a special committee of ladies who held open house during the entire week. Several important resolutions were passed by the Convention and one by the Columbia Section, A. 1. M. E. With Stanly A. Easton, chairman, presiding, the Columbia Section, American Institute of Mining Engineers, occupied the time between 2.00 and 5.30 p.m., March 24th, the Moorish room of the Spokane hotel being filled with members and their guests. "The Apex Law and the Mineral Surveyor" was a paper presented by F. W. Callaway and generally dis-cussed because of its local application in the Coeur d'Alenes, the conclusions being reached after expensive litigation between two of the large mining operators in that district.

The long and often undefined period in the post-mining phase challenges geo-monitoring with its various responsibilities, like the detection of environmental changes, ground movements and water management. Modern methods of geo- and environmental monitoring observe numerous aspects using active and passive sensors with multispectral, hyperspectral and microwave sensors, with diverse spatial dimensions and spatiotemporal resolutions from satellites, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), in-situ sensors. Data integration, together with on-site knowledge and experience, provides the basis for comprehensive modeling, which improves the understanding of the environmental changes and their related causes, which is an essential step for public acceptance. In this paper, we aim to give a brief overview of various geo- and environmental monitoring methods.

Mineral selective flash roasting (Steiner process) in oxidizing atmosphere was tested successfully for the efficient low intensity magnetic separation of siderite from ankerite and other gangue minerals within the ore of the Steirische Erzberg, Austria. The calcium, magnesium and manganese containing siderite turns selectively into a ferromagnetic oxide phase while ankerite remains paramagnetic. The expulsion of CO2 increases the volume specific surface depending on the selected temperature. Unlike pure iron oxides absorbing SO2 below 530°C, the calcined siderite (enriched in the magnetic product of the Steiner process) acts as a sorbent for SO2 between 500 and 820°C. The effect was studied by thermogravimetric analysis and particle bed tests complemented with neutron thermo diffractometry (D20/ ILL). The energy input was simulated with the help of a tube furnace. The composition of the artificial combustion gas permeating the bed was close to that measured in pilot scale tests (6 % CO2, 12 % O2, 700 vpm SO2). The evaluation of data relating the SO2 variation in the off gas monitored by electrochemical cells to the actual phase composition revealed an intermediate ferrite phase as absorber. During the rapid decomposition in oxidizing atmosphere starting at 500°C the occurring siderite alters to a (CaO, MgO, MnO)Fe2O3 ferrite as an intermediate phase accompanied with sudden SO2 absorption. SO2 disintegrates the ferrite structure forming MgSO4 and MnSO4, taking Fe2O3 as a catalyst. Ankerite (enriched in the non magnetics of the Steiner process) starts to absorb at temperatures above 1000°C forming gypsum. The findings support the SO2 controlled operation of the Steiner process by ?autodesulfurisation?. It explains aspects of the SO2 implementation reactions within off gas recycling in Austrian sinterstrands. This publication is a compilation of tested methods for the analyses of titanium tetrachloride, titanium sponge, and various intermediate materials and products. They are presented in concise form without the detail usually found in publication of new methods because many of them are modifications of well known procedures. The Electrometallurgical Experiment Station, Boulder City, Nev., has been developing titanium production methods since 1945. Most of this development was on a modified Kroll Process but also included work on sodium reduction and electrolytic methods. During these years a large variety of samples were analyzed. Most of the analytical problems were solved using published methods or modifications of the same. At the start, there were no published procedures for analyzing titanium sponge using spectrochemical methods. A great deal of study was given to testing several of the well known techniques, and some of them, such as direct sparking of the metal, proved to be completely unsatisfactory. Solution-spark techniques were finally tried, and satisfactory procedures were developed for some of the more common impurities. These spectrochemical methods were then put into routine use for several months before their publication.2/ Some new modifications have been made, and techniques have been developed to determine other impurities found in titanium sponge and tetrachloride. All spectrochemical methods used in 1954 are included in this publication.

As man searches unexplored horizons for new and economic industry, he must be constantly and acutely aware of the presence or absence of that precious commodity without which Industry, indeed Man himself, could not survive --W ATE R. The water requirements of the world today are magnanimous, considering that in 1960 the estimated consumption in the united States was over 300 billion GPD (1) or more than 1,700 GPD per person (5). The magnitude of the problem can be visualized as one considers that three times this quantity of water will be required in the united States by the year 2 000, when the dependable supplies of water are estimated to be only two-thirds of that required(2). How, then, can we continue to wreak such havoc on that life-sustaining substance -W ATE R? It is necessary, indeed mandatory, that those engaged in the Engineering profession consider it their moral obligation, not only to conserve the quantity of water which their conceived projects may require, but also to treat the effluent in order that the eutro-phication of natural water courses not be abnormally accelerated. The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited consumes some 33-1/2 millions of gallons of fresh water daily at its nine town-sites, fourteen mines and eight plants throughout the Sudbury district of Ontario. The present daily reuse of water exceeds 100 millions of gallons in the same area. It is noteworthy to mention that the milling rate has increased from 46,000 to 70,000 tons per day during the past five years, with no increase in water consumption. In fact, there has been a reduction in fresh water requirements.

The reconstruction of the British mining industry which began shortly after nationalisation in 1947 continued until well into the 1950s with the support of the Government. This support diminished as plentiful supplies of cheap oil from the middle East made many coalmines un¬economic. The planned rundown which followed was foreshadowed in the 1965 White Paper which outlined the financial measures to speed the closure of uneconomic collieries. The decline appeared likely to continue into the 21st century as the role of coal in UK energy requirements became less and less significant. This policy was well on course in 1973 when the oil crisis led to a complete reappraisal of the position. A Government examination in 1974 of the coal industry then supported the National Coal Board's general strategy of major capital investment as set out in its 'Plan for Coal' (1). Plan for Coal aimed at halting the intended decline in the industry's capacity and restoring it to 120 million tons of deep mined output in 1985. The Plan proposed action along the following lines (a) increase output by major Investment in construction at existing collieries with sufficient reserves to give 13 million tons per annum extra output (b) invest in extending the life of existing collieries by gaining access to additional reserves, to give 12 million tons per annum extra output © by sinking new mines, produce an extra 20 million tons per annum. Figure 1 shows the contribution (2) expected from each of the three sources up to 1990/1. The measures taken were expected to offset the inevitable exhaustion of existing pits and provide the additional 40-42 million tons capacity needed to restore annual output in 1985 to 120 million tons. Parallel to this programme for expansion of deep mined output, opencast mining was to produce 10-15 million tons per annum. A recent review however, indicates that new mines are likely to yield only 10 million tons per annum by 1985, mainly owing to the need for public inquiries into proposals for new mining and the resultant fact that planning approval takes 'much longer than originally expected. Nevertheless the objective of 120 million tons deep mined output by 1985 is still considered achievable of means of a greater contribution from existing mines. This programme was originally estimated to cost 2,-56 million dollars at March 1974 prices, out revised estimates of the cost of Plan for Coal indicate that it may now exceed 6,960 million dollars at mid-1977 prices. Plan for Coal includes a substantial investment in new and reconstructed coal preparation plaints. At mid-1977 prices more than 322 million dollars Ls so be invested in coal preparation projects in the UK, at the rate of, about 70 million dollars a year. This rate 3f capital expenditure has been maintained over the past three years and covers investment in a wide range of coal preparation coals for the power station, coking and domestic markets.
