An analysis of screen design options on the operating efficiency of secondary crushing plants has been conducted using a dynamic computer model. The model allows for the simulation of a wide variety of crushing circuits and can be run on either a microcomputer (IBM PC/XT) or a large time-sharing mainframe computer. Size reduction and separation characteristics of crushers and screens are based on standard manufacturer design and performance data. Input/output routines are available in tabular, alarm or strip chart recorder modes to facilitate operation of the program. A number of alternate circuit designs are compared to show the influence of surge capacity, screen size and area, screen deck location, and closed side crusher settings on the operation of a 10,000 ton per day plant. The program is currently in use at Queen's University to teach plant operations and control. It has potential to be a valuable tool for operator training.

Based on the cubic law, the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities has the most significant effect on the hydraulic conductivity of jointed rocks. The hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities is a stress-dependant parameter and reduces with increasing applied stress. Furthermore, the rock stress increases with increasing depth. Therefore, hydraulic aperture is a depth-dependant parameter. In this paper, new empirical equations are introduced to calculate the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities at different depths. These equations were developed on the basis of back analysis of compiled packer tests from different actual cases. They provide the capability to calculate range of variation and average hydraulic aperture when the orientation of discontinuity and field stress tensor are given. Furthermore, it is possible to calculate the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities when its value is given for another depth. A hydraulic aperture of 7.7?µm was calculated by this method, comparing well with a reported site value of 8.3?µm for rock discontinuities at the Stripa mine project at a depth of 385?m. In 2009 the Gold Quarry open pit mine, located 11 km northwest of Carlin, Nevada, USA, experienced multiple large-scale slope instabilities of the upper east highwall that reduced gold ore extraction for nearly 18 months. The slope instabilities occurred within a weak, consolidated sedimentary sequence that exhibits strength characteristics that are transitional between soil and rock. Instability initiated as mining exposed the lower clay-rich sub-units of the Carlin Formation (Fm.). This deformation created preferential flow paths that allowed groundwater from the upper sandy sub-units to infiltrate low permeability clay-rich sub-units, thereby enhancing deformation of the slope toe which in turn destabilized the upper portion of the highwall. The outcome was a 160 m high slope instability that had a lateral run-out of 850 m. The effort to return the pit to ore production required both the geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations and the preliminary remediation mining activity to be concurrent. This approach required the development of detailed safety procedures and a requirement to modify the remediation design as new results were obtained. An initial challenge was to mitigate a near vertical, 90 m headscarp with blast induced, localized slope failures. Back-analyses applying numerical modeling indicated that the failure surface did not coincide with initial interpretations based on field observations; drilling results eventually confirmed this alternative failure geometry. The final remediation design incorporated shallower slope geometries and an approximately 3 Mt buttress along the base of the Carlin Formation and bedrock contact to reinforce the lower clay-rich sub-units. The outcome is a stable highwall within the Carlin Fm. following nearly ten years of repeated slope instability, and an example of the necessity to conduct appropriate geotechnical and hydrogeological studies during the early stages of a new layback evaluation or new open pit development.

The Proceedings of the above Symposium have been edited and published by the Symposium Committee. The Symposium was sponsored by the Australian Coal Association, the Joint Coal Board, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The Symposium was very well attended, with presentations from fourteen countries, including all the major coal-producing countries of the world. The Proceedings are presented in two parts: the Symposium Part and the Workshop Part. The Symposium Part deals basically with the theoretical aspects of outbursts and high-gas emissions in mines, while the Workshop Part is more practically oriented and describes case studies, and the management systems, and drilling technologies used in underground mines.

"Coal and gas outburst is an extremely complex dynamic disaster in coal mine production process which will damage casualties, equipment facilities and disorder the ventilation system by suddenly ejecting a great amount of coal and gas into roadway or working face. This paper analyzed the interaction among the three essential elements of coal and gas outburst dynamic system. A stress-seepage-damage coupling model was established which can be used to simulate the evolution of the dynamical system, and then the size scale of coal and gas outburst dynamical system was investigated. Results show that the dynamical system is consisted of three essential elements, coal-gas medium (material basis), geology dynamic environment (internal motivation) and mining disturbance (external motivation). On the case of C13 coal seam in Panyi mine, the dynamical system exists in the range of 8-12 m in front of advancing face. The size scale will be larger where there are large geologic structures. This research plays an important guiding role for developing measures of coal and gas outburst prediction and prevention. INTRODUCTIONCoal and gas outbursts are a complicated mine gas dynamic phenomenon that pose a serious threat to coal mine safety production. Since the first recorded coal and gas outburst occurring in Isaac coal mine of the Lule coal field in 1843, more than 40,000 outbursts have occurred in the world. China ranks first in outburst frequency and intensity. In recent 20 years, China on average increases 37 pairs of coal mines and more than 280 times outburst accidents every year (Yan, 2013). The coal and gas outburst occurred on Oct 20, 2004 in Daping Coal Mine, Zhengzhou Coal Group, caused serious gas explosions and ejected 1,894 tons of coal into the face, causing 148 fatalities. In recent years, despite implementation of numerous control measures, coal and gas outburst still occur frequently ash mining depth and mining intensity increase. The outburst mechanisms can be summarized in the following four aspects: the gas leading role hypothesis, the geostress leading role hypothesis, the chemical effect hypothesis, and combination hypothesis. The last hypothesis has won the acceptance of most scholars who consider that an outburst is the result of combined effect of stress, gas and coal (Yu, 1992).Numerous experimental measurements and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the permeability and damage development process in coal seam. Sobczyk, et al (2011) carried out a laboratory research of the influence of sorption processes on gas stresses leading to coal and gas outbursts. Wang, et al (2013, 2015) conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the rapid decompression and desorption induced energetic failure in coal using a shock tube apparatus. Xu, et al (2006) developed a coupled gas flow and solid deformation numerical model and applied to simulate the coal and gas outbursts in underground coal mines using RFPA2D-Gasflow. An, et al (2013) and Xue (2014) analyzed major parameters and the effect of gas desorption on outburst initiation and established a model of gas migration and mechanical processes during excavation."

The Department of Mapping and Surveying (DMS), the Australian Key Centre in Land Information Studies (AKCLIS), the Department of Industry Development (DID) and the State Government Computer Centre (SGCC) are testing a regional information network in northern Queensland. Several study sites have been chosen by different groups of participants. The members of each common-interest group share their data for the site. They can also access datasets supplied by other organisations that are not directly involved in the particular study being undertaken. The participants include state government departments, local authorities, fed- eral organisations and the private sector. The participants communicate with computer systems in Brisbane via Q-Net. Q-Net is a pilot State government tele- communications network, established by the Department of Industry Development. Q-Net uses the communications sat- ellite AUSSAT 1 as the primary instrument of data transfer. The Q-Net network is a star system, with a Master Earth Station in Brisbane acting as a hub for radial earth stations, located throughout Queensland.

Industrial fly ash from (electro static precipitator) was mixed with soil at different levels on v/v basis for raising of pulpwood tree species. In field trials conducted on degraded soils increase in the plant growth of Eucalyptus tereticornis, Acacia auriculiformis and Casuarina equisetifolia by 10 %, was observed during the initial six months after plantation at 18-24% (v/v) fly ash concentration which was at par with chemical fertilizer treatment. Level of As, Se and Mo in flyash was 6.2, 3.6 and 4.0 ppm respectively. The radioactivity analyses 40K, soil and 28 fly ash showed that the activity levels of gamma emitting radionuclides K, Ra, Ac were within the permissible limits and mixing of fly ash with soil at tested concentration would have no deleterious effects. Available Co, Cr, Ni and Cd in rhizospheric soils were below detection limit. Fly ash at 10-20 % level (v/v) was also found to be a good potting mix material in forestry nurseries in terms of improving biomass production by 20 %, when tested in nursery seedlings of Eucalyptus tereticornis. Nursery addition of fly ash in soil decreased soil dehydrogenase activity and the soil bacterial population was negatively affected. These results indicate that use of fly ash in forestry sector involving nursery and plantations as a soil amendment agent upto 10-20 % v/v is a gainful utilisation of fly ash.

"This study aims to discuss personal and behavioral parameters contributing to heat-related accidents. To study the prevention approaches, it is essential to look at the various factors at the individual, management, and industrial levels. Qualitative risk analysis methods are used based on the public data in the USA to find the impact of the environmental and behavioral parameters on the heat stress and heat strain of mine workers. The effects of individual factors such as worker experience, age, fitness, lifestyle, acclimation, and more are illustrated. The significance of factors such as the roles of the mine management and regulatory agencies are addressed.INTRODUCTIONOccupational hazards in mining industry endanger the health and safety of the workers and productivity loss for mining companies. Among those hazards is the exposure to excessive heat that has adverse effects on the health of mine workers. The intensity of heat load is a significant factor in fatal and non-fatal heat-related accidents. Severe environmental conditions combined with a high level of activity in the mining industry increases the vulnerability of individuals to health and safety hazards (Ngwenya, Oosthuizen, Cross, Frimpong, & Chaibva, 2018). Lack of regulations and legislation addressing the heat issue in the mining industry (i.e., underground and open pit mines, processing plants) also raises widespread concerns.Along the climate change, various sources contribute to the overall heat load at a mine site (Hanna, Kjellstrom, Bennett, & Dear, 2011; Kjellstrom, Lemke, Hyatt, & Otto, 2014). In underground mines, the majority of heat comes from different sources such as geothermal gradient, equipment, auto compression, groundwater, and blasting (Maurya, Karena, Vardhan, Aruna, & Raj, 2015). On the surface, however, the majority of heat load can be sourced to solar energy. The exposure to excessive heat might result in heat-related illnesses, fatigue and fainting, loss of concentration, performance reduction, and production loss (Kocsis & Sunkpal, 2017; Roghanchi, 2017). The severity of the effects depends on duration and level of exposure and the response of an individual to heat stress. The response of an individual is influenced by different factors including age, gender, fitness, lifestyle, experiences, and past medical history."

By virtue of its complex nature, the construction industry comprises a wide spectrum of interrelated variables and factors. This multifaceted character of the construction industry puts the use of engineering modeling tools and techniques on top of project management necessities. This research introduces a macro-level earthmoving management system using Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to reach the optimum allocation of earthmoving equipment. The Earthmoving Equipment Management System (EEMS) functions through four integrated modules: (1) A Central Database containing information about projects and available equipment; (2) An Equipment per Segment Selection module that calculates the cut and fill quantities, plots the Mass Haul Diagrams, and selects the equipment types to be used for each segment; (3) An Equipment Pool module which determines the production and cost for each available equipment, based upon the project site conditions; and (4) An Optimization Engine equipped with a GA optimization solver. This engine formulates the optimum earthmoving cost for all projects, by changing the number of allocated equipment. The Optimization Engine takes into account the number of available equipment and calculates the weekly equipment allocation. The EEMS model was implemented on an earthmoving company conducting five different projects on hand. The model proved to be an effective tool in providing decision makers with optimum equipment utilization on a multi-project scale to minimize the earthmoving cost. The results were then compared with the company?s existing micro-level management system, demonstrating better performance on the level of savings, amounting to 13% of total earthmoving cost.

The biggest chromium mineral processing plant in Albania is Bulqiza plant. It has been in operation for more than 20 years, treating low-grade chromium ores grade 20 ? 26 % Cr2O3 and producing chromium concentrates grade 48 ? 50 % Cr2O3. About 2 million tons of tailings with 13 % Cr2O3 content are stocked in a dam close to the plant. Mineral processing of low-grade chromium ores with less than 16% Cr2O3 content is unprofitable because the mining expenses are high comparing with the current market prices of chromium concentrate. Recycle and enrichment of existing tailings is profitable, because there are no underground mining expenses in this case and because that this kind of raw material does not need expenses operation of crushing and grinding. The existing plant is in operation for more than 8 years treating existing tailings as raw material. Grade of concentrate in the value 40 % Cr2O3 and Cr2O3 recovery in the value 30-35% in the plant are considered low. The main reason of low concentrate grade and recovery is high content of particles under 100 microns, the slimes, in raw material. In the paper is described the study carried out to improve enrichment of the tailings, as well as analyses of existing process, raw material and products. It is concluded that majority of lost is present in the slimes which are not separated in existing spiral separators and shaking tables. Basing in the study is composed the new flow sheet of recycling and concentration of the tailings to produce chromium concentrate grade 41 ? 42 % Cr2O3 and recovery 60 %, decreasing in this way the concentrate production cost two times. In the paper are presented the tests and results of concentration of particle size fraction under 100 microns, using gravimetric, magnetic and flotation methods, as well as equipment and machines suitable for slimes treatment and concentration.

The purpose of this paper is to look at the costs of tailings disposal, and in particular the comparative costs of different disposal methods in different situations. Costs are often the hidden design parameter. We know that they are important but sometimes feel that it is not very respectable to talk about them in public. It is better from a public relations point of view for it to appear that the decision-making process is driven by environmental factors or best practice rather than looking for the cheapest option. But this presumes that the two are mutually exclusive and this need not be so. These issues are discussed later in the paper. It is also commonplace for the scale of the mining operation to change with time, typically involving increased throughput rates and total tonnage. New ideas in tailings disposal make their appearance. The regulatory attitude can change. Having made a decision about the disposal method at the time of original feasibility study and design it is easy to suppose that the mine is æstuck with itÆ. But that also need not necessarily be so. Careful costing of options may reveal that a switch in method could be cheaper in the long run. The designer will often tend to think in terms of initial earthworks and site development costs. Aspects of power consumption, labour, and periodic campaigns to move tailings pipelines and carry out embankment raises are either overlooked or not given the same emphasis. This can distort the evaluation process. It is productive to think in terms of dollars or cents per tonne as a basis of comparison, not just the total sums. Tailings disposal can cost from as little as 10 - 20 ó/t to over $1.00/t which is a big range. There may be good and unavoidable reasons for the high figure but there would need to be to justify being so far over the industry average. At the same time, mining and processing costs, at least for gold, are around $15 - 20/t. Viewed from this perspective tailings disposal will always be a relatively small component of the annual budget.

THE ninth International Petroleum Exposition held at Tulsa, May 16-23, broke all size, sales, and attendance records of previous shows. More than $12,500,000 worth of equipment was on the grounds. There were 546 companies exhibiting and every available inch of the fifteen acres allotted to exhibit was taken. Drake Drive, the main street of the exposition, was literally "supply row" with National Supply, Frick-Reid, Continental Supply, Oil Well, Bridgeport, International Derrick and Equipment, and Parkersburg Rig and Reel companies occupying the entire space. The exhibitors were a cross section of American industry, with such firms, besides the strictly oil equipment firms, as the United States Steel Corp. and others allied to the oil industry, exhibiting. Between $10,000,000 and $15,000,000 of equipment is estimated to have been sold on the grounds during the exposition. Valuable contacts were made by the exhibitors with key oil men. Attendance passed the 175,000 mark for paid admissions in contrast with 154,000 for the eighth exposition in 1934. Visitors registered from Venezuela, Soviet Russia, India, Germany, Spain, Mexico, England, Canada, France, Colombia, Greece, West Indies, and Rumania. Hotels were overflowed and a housing bureau found rooms in private homes for thousands. Oil companies set up a schedule of shifts in order that as many of their field men might attend as possible. "Abstract - The Louvicourt Au-Ag-Cu-Zn-Pb sulfide deposit is hosted by a Middle Ordovician calc-alkaline sequence of aphyric rhyolite flows and associated fragmental rocks at the top of the Flat Landing Brook Formation. The Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.110) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.021) ratios in the footwall felsic volcanic rocks are consistent with known values for the Reids Brook member. The deposit consists of two concordant lenses of semi-massive to massive sulfides, approximately 150 m long and up to 9 m thick, which represent a fold repetition of a single exhalative horizon. The deposit contains a geologic resource of 136 000 tonnes grading 1.2% Pb, 1.0% Zn, 0.4% Cu, 90.9 g/t Ag, and 0.96 g/t Au; the deposit locally contains elevated Au (2.9 ppm) and Ag (320 ppm) contents. A laterally continuous iron formation that contains barite caps the deposit, and is gradational vertically and laterally into laminated siltstone. The exhalite confirms the stratiform nature of this deposit, but a large percentage of sulfides occur as late replacements of altered felsic fragmental rocks in the footwall. Abundant examples of colloform pyrite and perlitic and spherulitic textures in volcanic clasts are well preserved. The base- and precious-metal content of the Louvicourt deposit is atypical of the Bathurst Mining Camp (BMC). Reported assay data (n = 27) indicate an average Pb/Zn ratio of 2.6, the highest in the BMC (average = 0.39). Lead exhibits a strong Spearman Rank correlation (r' = 0.92) with base metals throughout the sequence, indicating a preponderance of galena in both the stockwork and stratiform zones. The Ag and Au contents in this deposit are among the highest in the BMC and exhibit a Au-Ag- Cu-Pb association. Barite-rich exhalative pyrite exhibits a moderate Au correlation with Ag (r' = 0.77; n = 10) and Cu (r' = 0.76) and occurs in portions of the exhalative sulfides that are enriched in Pb. Chemical exhalative rocks are conformably overlain by trachy-andesitic volcaniclastic (possibly pyroclastic) rocks that are assigned to the Little River Formation. These are enriched in Nb (average = 38.4 ppm) and P2O5 (average = 0.17 wt.%), and have much lower Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.056) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.0062) relative to rocks higher in the hanging wall. The intermediate volcanic rocks are conformably overlain by massive to pillowed basalt flows and related hyaloclastite that have Nb/Y = 0.60 and high TiO2 contents (average = 2.8 wt.%). This chemistry is consistent with rocks of the Brunswick Mines member (Little River Formation), except that these rocks are considerably enriched in P2O5 (average = 0.82 wt.%). This syngenetic exhalative deposit is unique for the BMC with a high Pb/Zn and elevated Au and Ag contents, as well as an epithermal signature (Sb-Ag-Au-Tl-Hg), analogous to high sulfidation volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Its intimate relationship with an emergent felsic dome (Flat Landing Brook Formation), chlorite-silicate-oxide-sulfide exhalite (locally hematitic), and the abundance of barite are classical features of many of the Kuroko deposits."

Woodcutters is a polymetallic vein-style deposit hosted by sediments of the Palacoproterozoic Whites Formation which forms part of the sedimentary sequence in the central Pine Creek Geosyncline. Past production and identified resources total over eight million tonnes at 5.5 per cent lead, 12.1 per cent zinc and 110 gA silver. The local geology is influenced by Archaean basement highs; the Rum Jungle and Waterhouse Complexes. Unconformably overlying basement are interbedded clastic and crystalline carbonate units (Batchelor Group) representing cyclic changes in the depositional environment. These exhibit onlapping features with the underlying rocks. Sediments of the overlying Frances Creek Group suggest a quiet period during subsidence and subsequent increase in water depth (the carbonaceous dolomitic shales and the interbedded dololutites of the Whites Formation) followed by proximal uplift resulting in the inundation of turbiditic flows (Acacia Gap Quartzite). All of the Palaeoproterozoic rocks show evidence of being affected by penecontemporaneous, basement circling faults with steep dips. The stress regime during the deposition of the Frances Creek Group was characterised by alternating episodes of thrusting and transpression. Periods of relaxation also occurred. The compression resulted in major NS strike-slip (transpressional) faulting, en-echelon NNE trending folds and NW-SE tensional cross faults. Thrusting produced N-S striking, steep dipping reverse faults and a possible decollement immediately above the Batchelor Group. Relaxation is evidenced by the intrusion of lamprophyre dykes and dolerite sills (Zamu Dolerite). Mineralisation at Woodcutters occurred in faults within the Whites Formation, probably synchronous with deformation and the deposition of the upper parts of the Frances Creek Group. Greenschist facies metamorphism occurred as the rocks were further buried. Several massive sulphide bodies occur at Woodcutters. A number of features influence the location and shape of these bodies. They are: ò the N-S transpressional faults and in particular associated dilation zones; ò intersection of the N-S transpressional faults with the axial plane of the NNE trending Woodcutters Anticline; ò intersection of the N-S transpressional faults with the NW-SE cross-faults; ò intersection of dololutite rich units with the NS transpressional faults where local replacement takes place; ò thickening of the lithological units in the vicinity of the anticlinal axis; and ò the anticline doubly plunging to both the north and south. The mineralisation exhibits vein-like features as well as epigenetic textures. Its boundaries are sharp, its thickness varies rapidly down dip and along strike, and no alteration halo exists though stringer veins of quartz-carbonate-pyrite ¦ sphalerite/galena occur in close proximity. A number of sulphide mineral assemblages have been recognised, each separated by periods of deformation and partially replacing the earlier assemblages. Vertically continuous zonation patterns highlight the presence of rich galena-sphalerite-silver in zones of maximum dilation and pyrite-arsenopyrite-gold concentrated at the along strike peripheries. The genetic model proposed has the mineralisation occurring whilst the transpressional regime was active. It was deposited from the same fluid that elsewhere in the Geosyncline formed the stratiform deposits higher in the sedimentary pile. Hydrocarbons sourced from the organic-rich Whites

Safety devices and guards are often looked upon as the last word in safety by the men around the shop or large industrial plant . However , thorough knowledge of the details of their jobs and of the dangers attending them are even more important . It should be unnecessary for all men to go through the experience of the first man to meet an unknown danger , but that appears to be about the only way by which many learn . Practically every danger connected with the job around a mine , blast furnace , steel mill , foundry , coke oven , cement mill , or other operation , was encountered for the first time by someone , and if he was fairly fortunate he either got hurt or just missed being injured and lived to tell his " budaies " how it happened; he spread the knowledge of that particular danger . Sometimes , but not often , a man can foresee a danger . If he could always be on guard and remember everything he had ever learned and also know everything that had happened to the other fellow , and then let that knowledge keep him aware of the dangers in his own immediate " job , " so that he would work the safe way for both himself and the other fellow , he would have what safety engineers call " safety consciousness . " Being safety conscious is a fine attribute , as it really means knowing all about one's job . A man who is really safety conscious is one of the best and most efficient workmen in the whole plant . The boss wants men of that kindmen who want to learn and who try to learn every little detail about their jobwhere there is danger of spoiling the heat or getting burned by hot metal in a steel plant or of loading rock instead of coal or ore in a mine . Such men know how to do whatever job they are on easily and with the least amount of hard work and at the same time get it done as quickly as possible with safety . A man who is safety conscious has to nearly all intents and purposes developed eyes in the back of his head , if he is in a big mill where there if something going on all around him . These eyes are not real eyes , but they are what might be termed a sixth sense which he has developed by his experience in the mill as well as in other dangerous work which he may have done before in other plants . There may be occasions when a man's safety consciousness will leave him for just a short time ; this is likely to happen when he is thinking about a quarrel he had with his wife which has not been cleared up happily , or perhaps when he has bought too many things on installment and with sickness at home

As indoor positioning provides particular challenges due to the unavailability of GPS signals, various systems such as ultrawideband (UWB), radio frequency identification (RFID), ultrasound, and wireless local area network (WLAN) have been proposed in recent years. Some of these technologies are currently being marketed and some are still being developed. UWB technology allows for higher precision while also reducing power consumption. Hence, the underground automation and localization systems can use this technology for more accuracy and robustness. This article discusses new robust UWB modules used for underground positioning and collision avoidance with regard to human safety in underground mining operations.

The Alligator Rivers Region has been the scene of one of Australia's most intensive environmental monitoring efforts since the current generation of uranium mining was mooted in the 1970s. Prior to mining, the local environment and the nature of potential impacts were not well known. The initial monitoring programs therefore included large baseline characterisation and research components. After some 15 years, water, soil and sediment monitoring programs have been reduced to a fraction of their early size, as the mining and natural systems became better known and characterised, and the actual nature of the environmental impacts were established. Modem techniques allow much more rapid and thorough identification of chemical species and elements of concern, allowing much more focused monitoring programs to be designed. In the 1980s data collection was emphasised at the expense of interpretation, and monitoring programs were maintained at much higher levels than were in fact required. It is now clear that investigations are important and should be distinguished from monitoring programs, and that the timely interpretation of investigations and implementation of recommendations can greatly reduce the effort and expense that can be involved in a monitoring program. Monitoring programs based on a sound understanding of potential environmental impact may then be efficient and cost-effective, yet provide sufficient information to assess the environmental impact of mining, guide further environmental protection measures when problems are detected, and demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements.

Three major suites of igneous rocks were erupted in the Great Basin in middle and late Cenozoic time. The first, most likely, resulted from sub- duction of a Pacific plate (Farallon plate) beneath the North American plate, resulting in eruption of andesitic rocks in the northern Great Basin between 42 and 43 m.y. ago. Between 34 and 17 m.y. ago, igneous activity migrated to the southwest, largely as eruption of volumincus rhyolite-quartz latite ash-flow sheets, ending about 17 a.y. ago with the onset of crustal extension and north-south-trending Basin and Range (rift) faulting. The second volcanic suite erupted between 17 and 8 m.y. ago in the northern Great Basin; is mostly basaltic or bimodal basalt-rhyolite. The third volcanic suite consists of andesitic and rhyolitic lavas and some basalt erupted between about 22 to 6 m.y. ago in the western Great Basin along the northwest-trending Walker Lane fault zone. Hydrothermal ore deposits are associated with all suites of igneous rocks, but the largest production has come from mines associated with andesitic rocks of the third (western Great Basin) suite. The oldest (34 to 42 m.y.) andesitic rocks (first suite) of the northern Great Basin have produced some large deposits; slightly younger silicic rocks of this suite are mostly barren. Many small ore deposits are associated with the 17- to 8-m.y.-old basalts (second suite) of northern Nevada.

Gold-based nanoparticles in the size range of a few nm have attracted increasing interests in catalysis, sensors and biomedical applications. The study of the unique catalytic properties of nanosized gold was inspired by the pioneering work of Haruta on the nanogold-catalyzed CO oxidation (1-4). There have been a number of excellent reports discussing both fundamental and application aspects of gold nanoparticles in catalysis (3-8). Our work reported herein is aimed at investigating the preparation and application of gold and its alloy nanoparticles for potential applications in fuel cell catalysis. Fuel cells operating by electrochemical oxidation of hydrogen or methanol fuels at the anode and reduction of oxygen at the cathode are attractive power sources due to their high conversion efficiencies, low pollution, lightweight and high power density. While methanol offers the advantage of easy storage and transportation in comparison with hydrogen fuel cell, its energy density (~2000 Wh/kg) and operating cell voltage (0.4 V) are much lower than the theoretical energy density (~6000 Wh/kg) and the thermodynamic potential (~1.2 V). The poor activity of the anode catalysts and inefficient activity or issue related to "methanol cross-over" at the cathode electrode are associated with the loss of about one-third of the available energy at the cathode and the other one-third at the anode. Extensive studies have been focused on Pt-group metals (Pt+Pd+Rh+Ru+Ir (PGM)) for both anode and cathode catalysts. A major problem is the poisoning of Pt by COlike intermediate species (9,10). Recently, oxide-supported gold nanoparticles in the <10 nm size range have emerged as one of the best catalysts for CO oxidation (1-3,11), and for water gas shift reaction in reforming stage using 5 nm Au on Fe2O3 (6). Gold and its alloy with other metals in the nanosize range present new alternatives (2,12). Whether the unique properties of gold nanoparticles can be exploited for addressing these problems is a focus area of our work. The ability to harness the large surface area-to-volume ratios and the unique surface sites of nanoparticles in <10 nm size range, especially in heterogeneous catalysis, constitutes a major driving force in fundamental research and practical applications of nanoparticle catalysts. It is this size range over which the metal particles undergo a transition from atomic to metallic properties. The understanding of factors controlling the morphological and surface reconstitution associated with such a size range is of fundamental importance to the ultimate exploration of nanostructured catalysts. We have been investigating the interfacial structures and properties of core-shell types of nanoparticles consisting of gold or alloy nanocrystal cores and organic monolayer shells that were prepared by twophase synthesis (13) and processing (14) protocols. Important attributes of such nanoparticles include controllable size monodispersity, processibility, and stability towards size- and composition-tunable catalysis (15-21). Some of these attributes were studied for understanding their electrocatalytic properties in the oxidation of methanol and reduction of oxygen, which are of fundamental interest to fuel cell technology.
