n the U.S., lead has been produced via blast furnace processing for over a century, and the slags from that pyro-metallurgical process have been accumulating on industrial sites over that extended period. Lead blast furnace slags typically contain both lead and zinc compounds in an iron-silicate matrix, and it appears highly likely that such materials will have to be processed in the near future to meet with EPA regulations. Thus it is appropriate to investigate possible processing routes to render the slags non-hazardous and simultaneously to recover metal values to partially off-set the inherent high cost of processing such materials. There are two major processing alternatives: one being pyrometallurgical and the other hydrometallurgical. The research reported here investigates leaching/solution purification/recovery processes for lead and presents experimental data for the treatment of lead blast furnace slags from S.E. Missouri. The results of the research suggest that both lead and zinc can be removed effectively from the slag, and that metallic lead can be recovered directly from the organic extractant utilized for solution purification.

The efficient operation of large haul trucks in large open pit mines requires an economic trade off between the haul route quality, the haul truck payloads and the level of haul truck reliability. This paper describes an investigation into the relation- ship between haul route surface quality and the level of structural reliability of a haul truck main frame. An instrumentation system for unattended recording of data on a haul truck operating normally in a mine and com- puter based analytical procedures were developed and used to identify which road segments contribute significantly to fatigue cracking at various sections of a haul truck main frame. INTRODUCTION In many open pit mines there is exten- sive use of large haul trucks to move over- burden and minerals. In most open pit hard rock mines, both the overburden and mineral ore are moved by large rear dump type haul trucks. "Production from Canada's first diamond mine is planned for the last quarter of 1998. The climatic conditions and the variation in kimberlite types to be treated have lead to the development of a compact and flexible processing plant.High kimberlite moisture contents and winter temperatures below -40°C have dictated a process flowsheet with limited in-circuit storage to reduce materials handling difficulties. The latest developments in High Pressure Grinding Roll technology will be used to liberate the valuable diamond, reduce diamond breakage, and increase fines production to reduce the amount of material for down stream processing in the Heavy Medium Separation section.A varying heavy mineral concentrate yield has lead to the development of a final Recovery section that will incorporate Attrition Milling and Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation for concentrate reduction. The latest developments in diamond X-ray sorting will be used to produce a final diamond concentrate for mechanical sizing, weighing and packing.Fine tailings thickening will utilise Deep Bed Compression type thickeners. This relatively new technology can produce;i) high underflow densities at low flocculant dosage rates, andii) clear overflowswith a smaller thickening area than conventional high-rate thickeners."

A preliminary research and development program dated April 25, 1974, was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (DEI) for laboratory, field and other engineering studies on the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included discussions on the peculiarities of retorted shale materials to be investigated and discussions of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. The proposed research and development program was divided into eight work phases as follows: I Program Development. II Exploratory Laboratory Tests on Old U.S.B.M. Retorted Shale. III Laboratory Tests on Pilot Plant Retorted Shales. IV Laboratory Tests on Retorted Shales from the Semi-Works Plant.

I did a project (Sungai Piah) as a consultant to your firm in Malaysia, where we were faced with a similar situation as sketched out in your question. The following is what we did for the grouting of the primary holes, which were both located upstream of the plug as well as downstream: We used a hydrophobic MDI based semi-rigid polyurethane prepolymer in the first phase of the grouting operation when grouting under water flow conditions. Then in the second phase and also for the contact grouting we used a two component water compatible polyurethane elastomer. And then for deeper formation grouting, when all the water flow had been stemmed in the vicinity of the plug, we used a regular (balanced stable) cement based grout. So it may not exactly answer your question, but we first used hydrophobic grout because it is very efficient to grout a formation through which water flows. We didn't stop all the leaks day-lighting downstream of the plug or all water running through the formation near the plug, but the flow of water through the rock formation adjacent to the plug was reduced by 99.9%, after completing the urethane grouting. This facilitated the placement of cement based suspension grouts without wash-out.

"Quebec Cartier Mining Company is currently mining a low-grade iron ore deposit in northeastern Quebec. The Company is producing some 8,000,000 dry gross tons of concentrates per year, grading about 66 per cent iron. The pit, which is located on the keel or hinge line of a fold, will eventually be about 1,000 feet deep with a surface area of 8,000 by 2,600 feet. The most significant structural discontinuities in the mine are the natural bedding planes and secondary perpendicular joints. The exposed walls are subjected to a sub-Arctic climate and heavy blasting occurs approximately six times a month.QCM utilizes design and operating techniques to control rock fall. Steps are also being taken to analyze the ultimate over-all pit slope stability."

MR. G. G. BOWSER: Mr. Kalbhenn's paper is an excellent one and is a concise description of a very interesting piece of work. It is well known that a great deal of preliminary study was given to this job before the final plans were made. It is due to this thorough preparation .chat the work progressed so satisfactorily, smoothly, and safely. The ideas carried out in the construction of the hardwood pack, timbered compartment, inclined raise, loading chute, and steel-boomed room, all contributed to a successful conclusion of the work. The extra care in being certain that the compartment shafts were well timbered was especially necessary on account of the difficult blasting conditions. In other words, the foundations .of this job were well and truly laid. The blasting in this work was very difficult due to the nature of the Strata. Working under an ever precarious roof condition and completing .this job with only two lost-time accidents is a record of which to be proud. The shaft men engaged on this work are also due for praise. I regret I did not visit this work while it was in progress. It was not in lack of interest. This, however, more or less proves that the blasting end .of this job went along with practically no trouble. I have seen the nature of the rock, as I made several visits to the tunnels while they were being put through from the Phalen to the Harbour seam. According to figures in Mr. Kalbhenn's paper, the explosives consumption works out to 1.61 pounds per cubic yard of rock in the solid, or 0.8 pounds per ton. The explosives consumption in the tunnels ran from 2.86 to 3.46 pounds per cubic yard or an average of 1.58 pounds per ton of rock. Of course, the rock in the shaft was blasted in the most economical way possible, as far as powder costs are concerned, as the face advanced at close -wright angles to the strata and gravity was acting with the explosive. The tunnels were driven nearly 'end on' the strata and bottom holes had to be lifted, and I believe there was some re-drilling of ribs left in the floor. I would like to congratulate Mr. Kalbhenn on his very fine paper.

"This paper presents an analysis of the dynamics of bit wear on the productivity of the continuous miners. Two field surveys have been carried out. The first survey was to assess the impact of bit wear on productivity and production cost. The second survey was to study the wear characteristics of the cutting tool (i.e. magnitude, forms, and mechanisms of bit wear). Primary factors affecting bit wear is identified and laboratory experiments were carried out to study the effects of some of these primary factors on wear in detail. Results indicate that bit wear has a significant effect on the productivity of the continuous miners. Furthermore under the severe geologic conditions (i.e. cutting rock partings and roof and floor rocks) bit wear not only hampers the productivity, but also increases the production cost due to a higher number of bit consumption. This study also indicated that bit wear accelerates beyond 20% of the conical height loss which corresponds to 7% of the weight loss. This increase rate of wear is an indicative of higher abrasion between bit body and cutting material, resulting in a more dusty environment.IntroductionThe high demand for coal production has increased the need for mechanized coal cutting in underground coal mines. Continuous miners have been used in the United States of America for nearly four decades and now presently more than 2000 are in operation. Almost half of the underground coal production of the country is by continuous miners. Today, competition in the coal industry has increased, due mainly to market conditions and legal restrictions, thus placing an emphasis on production, efficiency, and safety. The use of continuous miners has resulted in the generation of respirable coal dust which causes black lung in mine workers. On the other hand, bit wear presents a serious problem as it affects productivity and economy.Much research in the put has been done on energy requirements and mechanism of energy dissipation for ideal rock fragmentation in the cutting process. Recently, dust hazards in underground coal mines as a result of coal cutting has been a great concern to mining engineers as well as environmentalist of the country. In past, much emphasize has been given to fragmentation mechanics (Khair et al, 1989), dust generation due to regrinding (Khair and Xu, 1991) and dust generation due to bit wear (Khair, Xu. and Ahmad, 1992). These studies concluded that dust concentration increased considerably after a bit weight loss of 7% and thereafter the bit should be replaced. Thus, legal restriction by the Mine Health and Safety Administration for the respirable dust concentration in underground might be a factor deciding the level or rate of production using continuous miners. While efforts in research are on reducing dust generation, it is also important and relevant to study bit wear in more detail.Bit wear is affected by three major groups of parameters: (1) machine operating parameters, (2) insitu conditions and (3) properties of rock. Again, past studies have shown that depth of cut, material of tool, position of water jet and velocity of the rotating drum are very important machine operating parameters. The content of the rock/coal material is important as bit wear is usually due to abrasion or adhesion. Diffusive wear becomes dominant only when the temperature exceeds the sensitive range i.e critical temperature. Mechanical tools have indicated that a rise in temperature is a function of drum velocity, properties of cutting material (rock or coal) and properties of tool. Bit wear due to chemical reaction and oxidation art almost negligible in coal cutting."

Four different nickel concentrates were oxidized in a laboratory scale laminar flow furnace in simulated flash smelting conditions. The major nickel- and iron-bearing minerals in the con- centrates were pentlandite, violarite, gersdorffite, and pyrite and pyrrhotite, respectively. Thermal decomposition, ignition and oxidation behavior of nickel and iron sulfides were examined by using optical and scanning electron microscopy. General reactivity of the concentrates was monitored with sulfur removal which was most effective in violarite-based concentrate. Pentlandite-concentrates needed higher experimental temperatures for complete desulfurization and gersdorffite-based concentrate contained 5 - 10 % of the original sulfur even in the most oxidizing conditions studied (1 100°C, 50 vol-% 02). The reactivity of the iron minerals was found to depend on the other minerals present in the concentrate. In this paper, the observed re- action products and mineralogical changes are presented and preliminary conclusions of possible reaction mechanisms of nickel-bearing minerals are discussed.

This study presents the results of core-log analyses from the exploration boreholes, the analyses of face advance rates, and the results of downhole monitoring studies performed in gob gas ventholes for calculation of changes in hydraulic properties in the longwall overburden at a mine site in southwestern (SW) Pennsylvania section of Northern Appalachian Basin. In the ?rst part of the study, coal measure rocks in overburden strata were analyzed and the locations where possible fractures and bedding plane separations would occur were evaluated. In the second part, the hydraulic conductivities were computed by two different slug test analyses methods using the water level changes measured in gob gas ventholes as longwall face approached. Hydraulic conductivities were analyzed with respect to the changes in overburden depth, the locations of the borehole, and mine face advance rates. These data were used to interpret the potential productivities of the gob gas ventholes as a result of fracturing and changes in hydraulic conductivities. The general results showed that the probability of fracturing and bedding plane separations in the overburden increase between strong and weak rock interfaces. Also, the probability of bedding plane separations increases as the interface is close to the extracted coal seam. Evaluation of slug tests showed that the hydraulic conductivity developments in the boreholes and their potential production performances are affected by the underground strata and the roof materials. In situations where the roof material is stiff and thick, the development of high permeability fractures around the borehole will be less. Results also indicated that borehole location with respect to face position affects the fracturing time and permeability evolution as well. Greater overburden depths generally cause earlier fracturing as longwall face approaches, but eventually result in lower hydraulic conductivities and potentially less effective boreholes. Increasing mining rates also resulted in generally lower hydraulic conductivities in the overburden. The results of this study were intended to improve the interpretation of gob gas venthole performance and to provide better siting of these boreholes.

This report describes the demonstration of longwall mining in a seam dipping 27 to 34'. Equipment was selected on the basis of capability, compatibility, and co t. Snowmass, Bureau of Mines, consultants and manufacturers were involved in the selection process. The equipment arrived in early 1981, prior to completion of development for the first panel; therefore, the equipment was operated on the surface for training. The surface training paid off with a fast, efficient installation and start-up of the face. The longwall equipment operated very well on the steep pitch with an average equipment downtime of 21.9[9]. Coal handling outby the face was a problem which caused an additional downtime of 19.5%. Development for the panels proved to be the major problem in the economics of longwall mining on a steeply dipping seam. During the first 9 months of operation the longwall averaged 71.9 TPMS and development averaged 0.6 TPMS for an overall average of 14.1 TPMS. Had mining continued, timing of development would have been another major problem. Monitoring of subsidence, pillar stability and shield loading was done in connection with mining, but little useful information was gained from the monitoring.

The Tennessee Capitol Corridor connects the Cordell Hull Building (CHB) to the State Capitol, which isa 232-foot-by-124-foot (71 x 38 m) structure in Nashville that includes porticoes built from local massive limestone. This connection was affected by the Capitol Connector Pedestrian Tunnel (CCPT) project, which is part of the overall Cordell Hull State Office Building and Central Services Demolition, New Construction and Renovation Project (Cordell Hull Renovation Project). To construct this connection, the two existing elevator shafts and a new emergency stairwell in the State Capitol were extended down to anew lobby area—the elevators by about 50 feet (15.2 m) and the stairwell by about 60 feet (18.3 m). This lobby was connected to the CHB by a 435-foot-long (133 m) pedestrian tunnel. It was predicted that most of the tunnel would be excavated in a relatively strong limestone; therefore, considering the project features and constraints, drill-and-blast techniques were selected as the primary excavation method. Because of restrictions on blasting in urban areas and, more importantly, the proximity of this construction to national historic landmarks, blasting operations were extensively monitored to measure and correlate ground vibrations as peak particle velocity (PPV), frequency, and strain—these being the major factors that would impact the surrounding buildings. As a result, copious amounts of data were gathered and interpreted within a short time to estimate blasting parameters and optimize the subsequent blast rounds. To calculate the ground response factor, the scaled distance of each shot was compared to the ground vibration as PPV, generating a subsequent regression curve with an R2value of about 0.7. Using the best fit curve equation, the estimated ground response factor was about 150 for the best fit line. Other than some cases with relatively high (> 2 in./sec [51 mm/sec]) recorded PPV values, the blasting operation was successfully conducted as planned and the observed strain on the monitored buildings was very low, mainly within ±2 με (0.0002% elongation). (In general, the recorded PPV was lower than 2 in./sec at frequencies of more than 50 Hz.). The strain gauges at key locations (cold joints and old fractures) in the Capitol and on other critical structures demonstrated strain was insignificant in relationship to ground vibrations from the blasting operations. The apparently small vibration-induced strains were related to the massive limestone construction of the Capitol and ancillary buildings, as the induced strain plus the existing strain did not exceed the critical strain of the massive structures.

Each one of us sees and evaluates the world through our perceptions. Through these perceptions we give meaning; how we view and understand our reality which sets the tone for how relationships are built. This is what I call building the ?invisible asset?. Identity, experiences, values and beliefs are invisible commodities, locating them can be as difficult as finding a mine. But if they are not located, the commodity does not have value. Just like in the work we do in our industry. For example when you are working in an underground gold mine and the vein is lost, you keep on working and trying to find the vein; time passes, money is being used and no results. You decide to bring an expert on this type of deposits who gave you directions that allowed you to find the vein. To be a responsible citizen of the world and to set the foundation for a better world, it is imperative to go deep, as deep as your next drilling program, because only there and then, can you develop the cultural sensitivity and the ability to become an agent of change for responsible, sustainable and profitable businesses.

Zincor operates four Lurgi fluidized-bed roasters at its roast-leach-electrowin refinery in Springs, South Africa. In 2006, Zincor?s four roasters had reached ages ranging between 26 and 38 years, while the expected life of this type of roaster is generally 20 to 25 years. Roaster 3 was the first to be rebuilt in 2006 because its condition had deteriorated the most. Roaster 4 is being rebuilt in 2007 and the last two roasters will be rebuilt over the next few years as necessary. The main damage to Roaster 3 was caused by buckling of the roaster steel shell. This caused the freeboard and dome areas to shift, resulting in cracks in the dome brick lining and crumbling of the bricks lining the freeboard. The steel shell buckled owing to the combined effects of excessively high operating temperatures and corrosion. These were caused by the following two main factors: ?Thicker external insulation was installed during a previous maintenance shut, which resulted in an increased steel shell temperature and exacerbated the normal metal fatigue ?SO2/SO3 containing gas that had permeated the brick lining passed through its dew point during frequent planned and unplanned shuts over the life of the roaster. This caused acid formation between the refractory brick lining and steel shell, resulting in corrosion of the shell. The initial plan was to replace only the damaged areas of Roaster 3, but when it was dismantled more damage was found, and the roaster was rebuilding from the tuyeres upwards. During there building the opportunity was taken to modify the design of some of the brickwork to extend its life and make future repairs easier. This paper discusses the mode of failure of Roaster 3 and the lessons learnt during its dismantling and rebuilding.

This Bureau of Mines report is the second of a series of process evaluations planned to determine the relative processing costs of producing metallurgical-grade alumina from low-grade aluminous materials. Included in these evaluations are recommendations for additional research and development to improve the processes and to lower their costs. The design for each process is based on published work. The processes considered in this report are designed to extract alumina as aluminum chloride from calcined clay with 20 percent hydrochloric acid and to remove the silica residue by filtration. Iron is removed by one of the following processes: Isopropyl ether extraction, in which iron chloride is extracted before decomposing the aluminum chloride; gas precipitation, in which the aluminum chloride is precipitated with hydrogen chloride while leaving the iron chloride in solution; gas precipitation-isopropyl ether extraction, in which the aluminum chloride from precipitation is extracted with isopropyl ether, if necessary; caustic purification, in which a crude alumina is produced and then purified by a modified Bayer operation; or sinter purification, in which a crude alumina is produced and then purified by a lime-soda sinter operation. Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I come to you tonight distinctly as a physicist, not as a geologist or a mining man. My experience in applied geophysics has been short, and I do not doubt that many of you have a much larger acquaintance: with the subject than I have. A little over a year ago, the firm of Alderson, MacKay & Armstrong decided to investigate the possibility of developing a new method of electrical prospecting suitable to our northern Quebec and northern Ontario conditions, and asked me to take up the work. A preliminary survey of existing literature convinced me that the field of induction methods was most promising. I wish to give you some account of the work carried on last summer in the Rouyn district in this connection with the very able assistance of Mr. H. G. I. Watson. Geophysical methods of prospecting can be divided generally into four classes: magnetic, electrical, gravitational, and seismic. Each class depends on the existence of a definite property in which the valuable mineral to be discovered differs materially from the surrounding rocks. In the four classes, the property will be, respectively, magnetic permeability, electrical conductivity, density, and elasticity. By far the largest differences occur in the case of electrical conductivity, where it is not rare to find ratios of the order of several millions, or even billions, between ores, sulphide ores especially, and the surrounding rock. Hence the sensitiveness and delicacy of electrical methods. Of these four classes, only two, the electrical and the magnetic methods, have been put to extensive practical use in the discovery of metallic ores. The other two classes are important mainly in connection with oil detection.

During 1963 more than 200 million tons of coal was consumed by the public utility industry. Ash residual, from the burning of this coal has caused disposal problems. In order to prevent air pollution, dust collection systems have been installed to suppress the fine ash emitted from boilers before it is discharged into the atmosphere. The collected ash, called fly ash, must be removed from the dust collection facilities and disposed in some manner, usually at a substantial cost to the utility. Many years ago fly ash disposal was not a serious problem because the demand for power was relatively low and coarse coal was burned on stoker type traveling grate machines. The low burning rates utilized on these grates did not produce large quantities of air-borne coal ash while the mechanics of this system of burning resulted in a clinkered residue of cinders. Both of these conditions resulted in the production of only small quantities of fly ash. As the demand for electricity increased, a method of burning pulverized coal was developed and was introduced to the public utility industry in 1918 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.1 This method of firing was considered a significant advance in steam electric generation as it (1) permitted the use of coals that could not be economically fired by other methods and (2) has generally resulted in improved efficiency, greater generating capacity and lower costs.2 The utilization of larger generating units using pulverized coal substantially increased the quantity of fly ash which resulted in a' more severe disposal problem.

AS this is written, the probability A is that the bituminous coal out- put for 1936 will approximate 420,000,000 tons (of 2000 lb.) with an average working time for all mines of 205 days. The results for 1935 approximated 369,224,000 tons, with the mines working about 185 days. The increase in production of 14 per cent is heartening. In anthracite, it is probable that the preliminary figures covering output for 1935, 51,- 003,000 tons, will be exceeded this year although the percentage of in- crease will almost certainly be small. The substantial tonnage of anthracite illegally mined, estimated to be 3,600,- 000 tons in 1935, with a similar large Lonnage in 1936, is in addition to the figure given above; it represents an open and flagrant disregard of law and property rights. It is hard to understand why the officials of the State of Pennsylvania do not enforce the laws against theft and brigandage, more so when the legitimate employees of the established producing proper-

ABSTRACT: Falcon concentrators are enhanced gravity separators designed for concentrating fine particles. The Falcon UF model is unique in that it is dedicated to beneficiation of ultrafines, one key feature being that it does not make use of any fluidization water. We investigated the physics of particle transport inside Falcon concentrators, and concluded that separation efficiency is governed by differential settling velocity. We derived and published a predictive model of the partition function under dilute conditions. We intend to extend the initial model to concentrated ultrafine suspensions for application to industrial scenarios by adding hindered settling to account for solid concentration effects.

AN unusual engineering achievement in the Gulf Coast last year was the drilling of a wildcat well in the swamps of Louisiana, using direct current. More unusual was the fact that it was necessary to house a diesel engine and generator on a barge in order to supply power. The remoteness of the well made it necessary to transport living quarters and drilling equipment to the location by means of barges, and involved the digging of a canal from a lake to the location, approximated one mile. The drilling equipment used on this well consisted of two generating units, each having one 210-hp. six-cylinder @$-in. bore type VDMA, 600 r.p.m. diesel engine, direct connected to a type CD-169, 125-kw., 250-volt direct current generator, which in turn is direct connected to a type CD-105, 15-kw. 250-volt exciter. One of these motors operates the draw works, one the mud pump, and one a duplicate spare. The generating equipment on the barge was approximately 250 ft. from the derrick, the control wires being brought from the derrick to the generator barge enclosed in a standard fire hose. This is an original idea for confining the con- 11.01 wires in one cable; obtaining minimum space and ample protection. Both control and power lines were suspended on poles. This well was at Lake Grande Ecaille Dome, which was located by seismograph in 1928. Fig. 1 shows the derrick, power barge and living quarters where direct G. E. current was used with rotary drilling equipment.
