Floyd County, KY., contains sizable deposits of high volatile bituminous coal. Some of the coals have been blended with higher-rank coals and used in the manufacture of high-quality metallurgical coke. The Upper Elkhorn No. 3, Upper Elkhorn No. 2, and Upper Elkhorn No. 1 beds produce the bulk of the present output in the county and contain the main known reserves of coal. Little information is available concerning the quality and extent of the deposits underlying the Upper Elkhorn No. 1 bed, although small operations in the past have worked a bed that is reported to be; the Lower Elkhorn. Undoubtedly, these lower beds occur in Floyd County, but depth Will preclude their development into a major source of fuel as long as large deposits of more-accessible coal are available. More is known of the occurrence of the beds above the Upper Elkhorn No. 3 owing to sporadic mining ventures in the upper measures. Many of the coal samples from beds above the Upper Elkhown No. 3. were collected in mines that had been abandoned. Almost all of the present production of Floyd County coal is taken from the Upper Elkhorn beds, and it is unlikely that their dominant position as coal producers will be challenged in the near future. Table 1 shows the coal production of the county by beds, during 1950.

Este estudo avaliou a influência da adição de um composto inorgânico radiopacificador sobre as propriedades do cimento Portland Branco, a fim de viabilizar sua utilização como cimento endodôntico, semelhante ao MTA. Primeiramente, cimento Portland Branco foi caracterizado por difração de raios-X, os resultados mostram que a amostra possui composição semelhante ao MTA, com exceção de bismuto na composição do material. O bismuto, segundo a literatura, é o agente radiopacificador presente no cimento endodôntico na base de MTA. Posteriormente foi selecionado um composto inorgânico, devido seu potencial radiopacificador para continuação do estudo, sendo este o Carbonato de Bismuto (Bi2(CO3)). Neste estudo foram avaliadas as seguintes propriedades; Tempo de presa inicial, compressão dimensional, solubilidade e alteração diametral, sendo todos os ensaios seguindo de acordo com a norma ISO 6878:2001. Para a realização destes ensaios, foram utilizadas amostras contendo 15% de Carbonato de Bismuto em sua composição. Comparando os resultados obtidos neste estudo, foi verificado de acordo com a literatura, que cimento Portland Branco acrescido de 15% de Carbonato de Bismuto possui propriedades semelhantes às do MTA, sugerindo assim, a viabilidade de sua utilização como alternativa menos onerosa aos demais materiais comercializados.

Perlite is a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous rock. It is a form of natural volcanic glass the main constituent of which is amorphous silica (70-76%). Perlite, when heated rapidly to its softening temperature range, expands from four to twenty times its original volume, due to the presence of 2-6% ?combined? water, in a manner similar to popcorn as the H2O molecules vaporize and create countless tiny bubbles, which account for its exceptional physical properties: light weight (30-150 kg/m3), low thermal conductivity, cellular structure, in general. This information circular describes a computer program called VARSAT2D, a comprehensive unsaturated fluid flow simulator developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. VARSAT2D solves for either a vertical or horizontal, transient or steady-state solution in variably saturated, heterogeneous, anisotropic porous media using the Galerkin finite-element approach. Simplex triangular elements are used. Moisture retention characteristics are described by specifying either the Brooks and Corey, Brutsaert, or Van Genuchten power functions, with hysteresis described using the Maulem independent domain model. Boundary conditions may include any combination of time-varying seepage, pressure along solution domain, boundaries and/or at internal node points, unit hydraulic gradient at the lower boundary, and a uniform source and/or sink. This program should be a welcome addition for mining and environmental hydrologists, researchers, and engineers interested in modeling unsaturated fluid flow.

The hydriding of bulk metals and alloys is a gas-solid reaction in which a hydride product layer is initially nucleated adjacent to the gas-solid interface and continues to grow until a complete transformation of the parent (a) phase into the hydride phase. The combination of measurements of the overall hydriding kinetics of samples having defined shapes and dimensions, together with examinations of partially hydrided samples, enables the presentation of the reaction rate in terms of an appropriate reaction model. A common and important type of topochemical development of the hydride in bulk metals and alloys involves a hydride layer formed on the metallic surface. The continuity of the layer can affect the reaction rate. The rate of hydrogen absorption in a sample, in the presence of a hydride layer, is usually analyzed using a model combining several sequential steps in which the hydrogen is transferred from the gas phase into the reaction site. Coupling the flux equations across the layer under proper steady state conditions, results in a complex rate equation in which the steady state rate of hydrogen absorption (proportional to the hydride layer velocity) is expressed in terms of the pressure, temperature, the rate constants of the sequential steps and the critical concentrations of hydrogen in the hydride. Generally, the rate constants of the individual microscopic processes are comparable in magnitude, so that the overall rate is not controlled by any of the specific sequential steps. However, there are two limit cases related to the first stage, the adsorption, for which the general rate equation is much simpler, namely, the fast and the slow adsorption approximations. Using this limit cases, equations are derived for the steady state hydriding rate of a given system. These equations provide means to anticipate the pressure dependence of the steady state absorption rate under low pressures, close to Peq and under very high pressures. At the low pressure regime both the fast and slow absorption cases yield linear pressure dependence. For the very high pressure range, it is found that the rate become independent of the applied pressure. The rate is given then by a combination of the individual rate constants of the system and the critical hydrogen concentrations. The model is shown to apply in several real cases, such as ZrCo, LaNi5 and titanium.

Australia has an enviable global reputation as a leader in health and safety outcomes in the hazardous industry of mining, in part due to an increased application of risk management regarding operational planning and mining practice. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) initiated a major project, RISKGATE, to build, capture and deliver a national body of knowledge to assist companies with the management of risk in coal mining. The online system contains information for tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives underground, explosives open cut, manual tasks, slips/trips/falls, outbursts, coal bumps and bursts, human–machine interface, tailings dams, occupational hygiene and inrush. In 2014, RISKGATE is developing content for fitness for work (fatigue, drugs, alcohol, physical well-being, psychosocial well-being).This paper analyses underground mining fatalities in Australia and the United States since 2002 and introduces RISKGATE with a focus on the knowledge base for management of hazards in underground operations. Through capturing coal industry expert operational knowledge, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover within the mining industry. The South Deep surface shaft system is being sunk to a final depth of 2750 in below surface and on completion will be the deepest single drop haft in the world. The shafts will intersect the target reef horizon at 2650 to below surface. In order to negate the requirement for a shaft pillar, which would he extremely large at this depth, the reef horizon in the vicinity of the intersection is currently being mined. A high quality crushed waste/classified tailings backfill is being placed in the longwall stoping panels around the shaft intersection area. This kill limit closure and ride which following shaft reef intersection could have a detrimental effect on the long term shaft stability. This paper discusses underground instrumentation results and numerical modelling exercises carried out to confirm that the shaft system will he stable throughout the life of the mine. Instrumentation projects include closure and ride measured between backfill paddocks and haulage leveling exercises carried out to determine the far field rockmass response to mining with stiff backfill.

Projections of coal reserves in Central Appalachia are essential for long-term planning in the region. Annual production is declining in some states, such as Virginia, and mineable reserves for the Central Appalachian Coalfield are challenged by difficult geological, mining, and market conditions. In order to project coal mining longevity in this region, interviews with mining companies were conducted to assist in the determination and assessment of technical and economic factors that impact coal seam mineability. This information was applied to seam and coal reserve data developed by state and federal governments. The results were carefully analyzed to determine the effects of various factors on the overall mineable coal reserve base.

A considerable part of the sulphuric acid requirements of the Aluminum Company of Canada's Arvida smelter comes from the burning of 180-200 tons per day of zinc '"'sulphide concentrates in a 22-ft.-diam-eter fluidized bed roaster. The plant and its operation were fully de-scribed in a publication that appeared about ten year ago (1). A simplified flowsheet of the roasting and gas-cleaning sections of the plant is given in Figure 1. The wet zinc sulphide concentrates are un-loaded into a pug mixer, by means of a Pay loader, and mixed with water in a mixing tank to make a slurry of 80 per cent solids. The slurry is transferred to a .feed tank and then introduced into the roaster at a point four feet above the constriction plate, which is the height of the settled bed of zinc calcines. Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) of rocks is an important mechanical parameter for many civil engineering and rock engineering applications such as tunnel excavation, slope stability and foundation design. Macau is one of the world's fastest growing and most densely populated cities, many large and important infrastructures have been being continuously built using pile foundations which are designed to be supported by granitic bedrock. In Macau, the UCS of the granitic bedrock is required almost for every project involving pile foundations and is always measured directly from UCS test in the laboratory. However, direct measurement of UCS requires high quality rock core sample which is not only time-consuming and expensive but also requires high level of operating skill. In view of this fact, estimation of UCS using some empirical correlations will be more practical and efficient because they are relatively fast and economical compared to the direct measurement from UCS test. In the past, some empirical correlations had been established and widely used for estimating UCS of rocks in common engineering practice. However, it has been well recognized that the rock properties are generally varied with sites or geological regions in other words an empirical correlation developed from one region or one country may not be applicable for other regions or countries. Due to the reason that the empirical correlations for predicting UCS for granite are scarce in practice, in this study an extensive experimental program has been performed and a large database containing data such as UCS, Point Load Index (Is50), Schmidt Rebound Hardness (RL), porosity (?), water absorption (S), specific gravity (Gs) and dry density (?d) has been developed. An attempt has been made for developing a new empirical correlation for estimating the UCS of Macau granite. Accordingly, a comprehensive statistical analysis for correlating UCS with Is50, RL, ?, S, Gs and ?d has been performed and a local empirical relationship based on the developed database is proposed for obtaining reliable estimation of UCS for the granite of Macau. Finally, the performance of the proposed correlation is accessed by using another independent testing database developed in this study. It indicates that Is50, RL, ? and S have strong correlation with UCS whereas Gs, ?d have poor correlation with UCS. This study not only proposed a proper predictive empirical correlation for UCS determination for Macau granite but also provides detailed statistical information which is beneficial to engineers for obtaining better characterization of Macau granite.

Les LMSM-CANMET sont à réaliser une étude dont les résultats serviront à estimer l?influence de certaines technologies et systèmes de contrôle visant des économies d?énergie et à évaluer l?impact des unes sur les autres. En outre, un modèle de simulation est en cours de création afin d?évaluer les gains incrémentaux liés à l?application d?une série d?innovations dans une exploitation minière. La présentation fera le point sur l'état d'avancement du projet en plus de soumettre quelques exemples.

The recycling of lead-acid batteries in the United States has become a challenge as to how to balance ever increasing environmental regulation and cost with efficient operations. East Penn's captive secondary lead smelter has developed into a recycling facility producing lead, polypropylene, sulfuric acid, ammonium bisulfite, and non-hazardous discard slag. The emphasis has been to design a facility to comply with environmental regulations, to eliminate wastes, and to produce products, while at the same time, continuing to supply the company's battery manufacturing raw material needs.

"In this report, we demonstrate that NF-KB, a ubiquitous transcription factor, plays an essential role in silica-induced inflammatory mediator production in the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7. Compared to the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), silica mediated a stronger activation of NF-KB p50/p50 homodimer at early phase of poststimulation. Furthermore, activation of NF-xB by silica and LPS appears to be mediated by different signal transduction pathways. Both silica and LPS increased mRNA expression in these cells for cyclooxygenase II, inducible nitric oxide synthase, tumor necrosis factor-a and interleukin- I a. This expression was attenuated along with the inhibition of NF-KB activation. It is well documented that exposure of alveolar macrophages to silica can initiate excessive production of inflammatory mediators and cytokines from several early response genes (1-3). At the DNA level, a common structural characteristic of these genes is the presence of one to five NF-lCB binding sequences (KB) in the 5'-flanking region (4-6). In resting cells, NF-KB is retained in the cytoplasm in an inactive form by binding to inhibitory protein known as hcBcx, hcB~. p 105 (precursor of p50) and p 100 (precursor of p52) (7-9). Upon cellular stimulation, these inhibitory proteins are proteolytically degraded or processed by certain proteases, which allows the liberated NF-KB to translocate into the nucleus as an activated form to initiate or regulate early response gene transcription by binding to its consensus element (GGGRNNYYCC)(7).In this report, we demonstrate that silica can efficiently induce NF-lCB activation in RAW 264.7 cells, and that silica displays different characteristic from LPS in the activation of NF-KB, both with respect to NF-KB subtype composition and the signal transduction pathway that leads to the activation of NF-KB. In addition, abrogation of NF-KB activation by inhibiting the protease can dramatically reduce the mRNA expression of cyclooxygenase II, inducible nitric oxide synthase, tumor necrosis factor-ex (TNF-o.) and interleukin-lex (IL-lex). These findings strongly suggest that NF-KB plays an essential role in silica-induced inflammatory mediator production in the monocyte/ macrophage cells."

The application of the Monte Carlo technique to production planning and everyday economic decisionmaking in mine production management is demonstrated. The logic is detailed using an example of underground production with continuous miners (CMs) and truck haulage. It is argued that availability of equipment and personnel are the predominant variables influencing mine output and productivity and that those availabilities may be well represented by binomial probability distributions. The probabilistic model is implemented in a standard Excel® spreadsheet with Palisade’s @Risk add-on to facilitate simulations. Starting from model calibration against data obtained from a mine’s annual reports, some general interdependencies of availability, utilization, productivity, and costs of production processes are outlined. Finally, several possible options and their consequences as regards production improvements are explored.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines studied the suitability of using flexible tendon cable supports as secondary roof supports at a western coal mine. The supports were installed in longwall tailgate entries and grouted into the mine roof. This paper quantifies how the use of cable supports can improve ventilation in underground airways. A mine ventilation simulator was used to model the changes in airway resistance and airflow and show potential for further ventilation improvements when cable supports are used. Model results indicated that cable support use translated to savings in air pressure around the longwall panel and increased airflow at the longwall face.

"In underground continuous mining operations, ventilation, water sprays, and machine-mounted flooded bed scrubbers are the primary means of controlling respirable dust exposures at the working face. Changes in mining arrangements, such as, face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation, and equipment operator positioning, can impact the ability of dust controls to reduce occupational respirable dust exposures. This study reports and analyzes dust concentrations measured by the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research for both remote-controlled continuous mining machine operators and haulage operators at ten U.S. underground mines. Results of these respirable dust surveys show that continuous miner exposures varied little based on depth of cut, but are significantly affected by ventilation configuration. Haulage operators experienced elevated concentrations in blowing face ventilation. The type of cut influenced exposures, with elevated exposures observed for both continuous miner operators and haulage operators when working in crosscuts driven into, or counter to, the section airflow. Individual cuts are highlighted to demonstrate instances of minimal and excessive dust exposure attributable to particular mining configurations. These findings form the basis of recommendations for lowering face worker respirable dust exposures when performing a variety of continuous mining cuts.INTRODUCTION Underground continuous coal mining operations may encounter a wide range of conditions and arrangements during production and development activities. These activities typically produce respirable coal mine dust, putting operators of continuous mining machines and coal haulers at risk for elevated exposures. In order to comply with federal regulations limiting respirable dust exposures for the duration of a working shift, mine operators typically implement ventilation, water sprays, and machine-mounted flooded-bed dust collectors (scrubbers) to dilute and control mine dusts during coal cutting. Nevertheless, changes in operational conditions can limit the ability of these controls to effectively reduce dust exposures. Some examples of conditions that can change during the course of mining include face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation, and operator positioning. Because these arrangements are largely under the control of mine operators, any insight into associated exposures may inform future plans and behaviors, reducing occupational exposures to respirable dust. The objective of this OMSHR study is to evaluate respirable dust exposures associated with a range of continuous mining arrangements by comparing occupational dust concentrations measured during a series of field surveys. These comparisons consider face ventilation configurations, depths of cut, and crosscut mining practices."

This paper examines the application of Lean Manufacturing in a mining environment, based on experience within the Rio Tinto entities: Rio Tinto Aluminium, Northparkes Mines and Hunter Valley Operations. The three applications have tested the flexibility of the Lean methodology. Within Rio Tinto, Rio Tinto Aluminium was the first group to introduce Lean. The rollout began in late 2004. It was introduced firstly at Boyne Smelters, Gladstone, as a model site with the initial application in the Carbon Bake Furnace area. It was later extended to other sites including the Weipa Bauxite Mine. LeanÆs successful application within Rio Tinto Aluminium was in part responsible for its recent adoption by other Australian-based Rio Tinto business units including Northparkes Mines, a copper mining operation in Central New South Wales, and Hunter Valley Operations, a group of four coal mines in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales. Lean is also being adopted by Rio Tinto Iron Ore. Rio Tinto Aluminium introduced Lean Manufacturing to complement an existing Six Sigma business improvement program and to achieve continuous improvement activities at a workplace level. Lean provides a similar level of rigour and discipline to Six Sigma but its application is everyday and for everyone, everywhere in the workplace. It is a valuable management tool. In a short time, Lean has achieved good and sometimes spectacular results improving productivity and efficiency at all sites, including our mining site. Within Rio Tinto Aluminium, it has also had beneficial impacts on our ability to develop and retain employees.
